Evergreen High School’s Class of 2022 has adapted to a lot of craziness over the past four years.

Conifer High School seniors gathered May 21 in the gymnasium for graduation. The ceremony was originally planned to happen outside, but a snowstorm the day before forced them to move it inside. A sea of green looked on as seniors and staff shared memories, performances and words of advice.

The luck of the draw had a special meaning for two candidates running for the Elk Creek Fire Protection District board of directors.

Dominique Devaney and Chuck Newby were tied with 179 votes after the May 3 election, and by a drawing, Newby won the election. He will be sworn in and begin serving his one-year term at the June 9 board meeting.

First EMERGE meeting in two years covers wildfire risk management The East Clear Creek community meeting also gave updates on county projects

East Mount Evans Resource, Growth and the Environment — or EMERGE — met for the first time in almost two years on May 18 with about 50 people attending. They discussed the county commissioners’ current projects, the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office’s new emergency systems and current wildland fire-reduction tactics.

Founded in 1993, the group meets semi-annually to discuss “information about the land, water, wildlife and plants, as well as providing pertinent news from Clear Creek County government and the school district,” according to its webpage.

The group specifically covers the southeast corner of Clear Creek County.

Sheriff Rick Albers began by telling of the Sheriff’s Office’s current staff shortages, including one nursing position, four jailers, three dispatchers, a patrol sergeant, two officers, one investigator and a jail tech. This is due partially to the cost of living in Clear Creek county being so high compared with other areas.

“My officers can’t live out here,” he said.

The other cause is people simply moving on to other jobs and states, and higher paying positions and sign-on bonuses in other counties, Albers said.

He went on to speak about a few services like SafeCall for checking and informing older residents who may live alone and house checks.

Evergreen Fire Chief Mike Weege spoke on a new fire alert system called Lookout Alert that functions by district rather than by county now, so Clear Creek residents in the Evergreen Fire/Rescue district must sign up for this service themselves. He also described working with various local law enforcement agencies, such as the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office, on evacuation plans.

Clear Creek County Commissioners Sean Wood, Randy Wheelock and George Marlin spoke on various current projects such as using some of the federal funds the county received from the American Rescue Plan — about $1.9 million total — on affordable child care to help people return to work.

They also spoke on short-term rental permits and the need for more comprehensive services for mental health in Clear Creek County.

Wheelock specifically spoke on tourism management, a way of mitigating the effects of large numbers of people visiting the forest of Clear Creek. He highlighted that

most fires in the county are humancaused, and the more people in the forests, the more likely a fire will start somewhere. Timed-entry systems, like those currently used by the Rocky Mountains National Park, was an example he used of how to do this management.

The main topic was wildfire management, which Jessica Moore of Evergreen Fire/Rescue spoke on.

“Our forests are incredibly unhealthy,” she said.

She explained that the forests were meant to burn periodically to rid themselves of extra debris, but the last 100 years or so of mismanagement has led to the current “megafires.”

mega-fires she said, as some burn so hot concrete foundations have turned to dust. Risk management is key, she elaborated.

Moore spelled out different ways houses catch fire, from embers lighting smaller flammable materials like pine needles and welcome mats close to the house, to direct flames on fences which carry the fire directly to the house. The department offers free assessments of properties to help homeowners understand what risk management can be taken, as well as a chipper service to remove fallen slash.

As graduate Kaymen Story described: “It’s Colorado. … It makes sense for it to be snowing at graduation.”

Story and many of her fellow graduates would’ve preferred the previous day’s beautiful, sunny 85-degree weather. But, the spring snow made for a very memorable graduation day experience.

“I think (the weather)’s appropriate for just how my high school experience has been,” graduate Emma Seliskar said. “ … COVID just kind of messed everything up, and it taught us to expect the unexpected and just roll with things.”

Graduate Curran Anderson described how, after dealing with the pandemic since the end of their sophomore year, he and his classmates were grateful to have a normal, in-person graduation — despite the snow.

The stands were a sea of different colored umbrellas, and the parents and EHS staff members were all smiles in their winter coats, knitted caps and rain ponchos. Even some of the graduates decided to forgo heels and formal shoes for snow boots instead.

After four very long years, graduate Darla Vera said she was still in shock that it was graduation day already, and she hadn’t quite wrapped her head around it yet.

“It’s exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time,” Vera said.

Anderson felt similarly, saying, “It’s

crazy. It’s all just hitting me now. It’s kind of sad — sad but exciting.”

Story expressed relief after navigating the challenges of a high school career amid a pandemic, while fellow graduate Liam Brennan said he was excited to move onto college.

“I think I’m ready for new beginnings,” Brennan continued.

The future’s so bright, they gotta wear shades Brennan, Story, Vera, Anderson and Seliskar all planned to attend college this fall, and had a positive outlook for their future and their classmates.

Seliskar, who will study integrative physiology at the University of Colorado-Boulder, said her fellow graduates were very smart and successful people with a wide range of talents. She added, “I’m excited to see what we’re all going to do.”

Brennan, who’s also attending CU-Boulder too but is undecided on a major, likewise believed EHS’ Class

of 2022 was definitely going to have a positive impact on the world.

Vera, who’s going to Ohio’s Miami University to study psychology, commented: “I think we went through a lot, like with COVID and everything.

And it all turned out OK. … We’re going to be a really great class in the years to come.”

Story believed the future would be “beautiful and have a lot in store for us” despite everyone’s different postgraduation journeys. Hers will take her to Washington DC’s American University to study political science and international affairs.

Anderson similarly commented how he and his fellow graduates were all going onto places where they can succeed. For him, that’s the University of Iowa to study criminology.

“Go Cougars, and go Hawkeyes,” he said.

ates to not be constrictive about their plans and live “too far in the future.”

Instead, he said, they should remain flexible and pursue what makes them happy.

Houston recalled his own postgraduation plans to be a doctor in a fast-paced hospital environment.

But, he decided to change his degrees and his career paths, and eventually found himself as an Evergreen science teacher.

“As cheesy as it sounds, I followed my smile,” he continued.

He recommended the graduates ignore the white noise of society, which often defines success by status and wealth, and use their happiness and smiles to measure their success.

As the graduates become fullfledged adults amid a very calamitous world, Houston was confident they’d “make the future a brighter and safer place” for future generations. While changing the world is a tall task, he encouraged them to change one person’s world.

For whatever reason, the blooming of flowers and trees are always a subtle reminder to reorganize and reenergize for the upcoming year.

Always make sure to review and check your documents. This might mean checking dates, signatures, stamps, and notaries on any form within your personal life or business. Always make sure that if you are getting rid of something, it will be replaced with another that is either: 1) Identical to the previous documents; or 2) Is current or the most up-to-date document.

When it comes to your Estate Planning, I would always advise you to carefully comb through your documents and ask yourself a few questions: 1) Do I know where all of my Estate Planning documents are?

2) Have I made any changes to my Estate Planning documents within the last year?

3) Do my fiduciaries or helpers know, or have copies of any of my documents?

4) Are my documents stored in a safe and secure place?

The last thing we want to do is to destroy or “clean out” our most current Estate Plans.

That being said, when it comes to your Estate Plans, you want to make sure you do not throw away something that is current or relevant to your Estate Plans. Think about things such as codicils or amendments to your Estate Plans. You should always keep these things in chronological order within your Estate Plans. You do NOT want to get rid of these documents. They are extremely important and will likely avoid headache in the future.

Always confirm with your Attorney before getting rid of a document, and make sure you shred them!

What we’re doing about wildfires

A

s the wind keeps blowing, and we watch the devastation in New Mexico, we can’t help but wonder “Are we next?” The threat of wildfire looms larger every year due to drought, warmer temperatures and stronger winds.

That’s the painful reality. However, at the same time the attention being paid and work being done to address wildfire risk and recovery — by everyone from your neighbors to President Biden — has increased markedly in the past couple of years.

Last year we saw lots of groundwork being laid. Here are just a few of the efforts to clarify the issues and recommend priorities for action: • Commissioner Lesley Dahlkemper led the Jeffco Wildfire Risk Reduction Task Force, which issued its report in January. It has evolved into the Jefferson County Wildfire Commission and will focus on mitigation, community education and revenue sources.

• Congressman Joe Neguse started the Bipartisan Wildfire Caucus early last year; it now has nine bills in the pipeline. He also worked on securing appropriations of $4.7 billion

for wildland fire management.

Columnist This year we saw the money, the lack of which has been a huge impediment to action in the past. Working together, elected officials at every level of government secured funding for: • grants to local governments for fuel reduction and mitigation; • increased fire-fighting capacity; • resources for volunteer firefighters; • higher pay for federal firefighters; • programs to recycle the biomass; • outreach, education and communication.

I tried to calculate the amount appropriated in all the state and federal bills, and threw in the towel.

No article about government budgets in Colorado would be complete without mention of the pernicious effects of the TABOR amendment.

Most of the money committed to wildfire prevention and preparedness comes from the federal government. When it goes directly to Jeffco, it is exempt from the TABOR limit. When it passes through the state, it is subject to the limit.

This means that for every dollar Jeffco gets through state programs, a dollar has to be cut from some other county program or agency.

Why are we robbing Peter to pay Paul? Colorado is one of a handful of counties that has not “deBruced,” a process by which voters agree to waive the limit on revenue increases, while keeping the right to vote on tax increases.

We can agree that money is good, but citizen involvement is every bit as important.

Hats off to Cindy Latham and other leaders of Community Wildfire Protection Implementation Plans who worked with Evergreen Fire/ Rescue to secure a grant valued at $300,000 from a state program this March. It will be used to thin and limb trees on 14.5 miles of roadways

that have been designated as evacuation routes. Many of the people who died in the 2018 Paradise fire in California were trapped in their cars on a road blocked by burning trees.

Thanks to dedicated volunteers, fire district staff and state funding, we and our neighbors may avoid such a horrible fate.

Another indicator that community awareness efforts have been successful is the recent shake-up on the Evergreen Fire Protection District board. As the Courier reported after the May 3 election, the three newly elected members were those who prioritized fire mitigation and promised to address the needs of the shrinking volunteer force.

We’re off to a good start in addressing wildfire issues, but there’s a lot more to do. Do what you can to decrease risk for yourself and your neighbors. Check out rotarywildfireready.com and make a plan.

We shouldn’t need trail police I was enjoying a walk on one of our Jeffco Open Space trails the other day, when I experienced a disturbing event: I was approached by a man on the trail who identified himself as a “volunteer from a local trail organization.”

This individual mentioned that he was out surveying the trail for safety and cleanliness.

He thanked me for cleaning up after my dog but mentioned that I should not just throw the doggy bag on the side of the trail, and that I should make an effort to pick up all my trash while on the trail.

I implied that I would pick up the bag later and he said that he “ended up picking up a lot of doggy bags that were well-intentioned.”

He also told me that I should put my dog on a leash for the safety of other hikers and wildlife, and also its own safety. While I carry a leash with me, I assured him that my dog was quite old, well mannered and posed no threat. While the man was pleasant and polite, I found his message disturbing.

Have we gotten to the point that we cannot take our pets onto the public trails without the Trail Police hounding us about picking up our trash and leashing our dogs?

a great time for EPRD to regroup, consolidate and plan for the future. A collective “breather” to reflect, collect and chat about what (and how) EPRD should strive to accomplish in the next 10-20 years is needed to re-energize community support, ensure sustainable, long-term financing and prioritize future endeavors.

Instead of taking on various new projects, EPRD is right to rally around creation of a strategic plan that focuses thought and open discussion on how projects fit into a larger vision of what Evergreen wants EPRD to be, as well as how to sustain and integrate EPRD into all other aspects of our community.

Please consider a few key planning principles: 1.

Prioritize EPRD initiative(s) on facilities/developing opportunities that are unlikely to be available without EPRD; 2. long-term, conservative economic planning for operation, maintenance and replacement of existing facilities; 3. creating and maintaining a collaborative development and management approach to all projects and facilities; and 4. creating greater equity in financial responsibility for district residents and non-residents for EPRD services.

Project priorities: EPRD should prioritize community facilities/services that are not available commercially (pools, fields, dog park, etc.)

Sustainable, long-term economic planning: Demonstrate to EPRD taxpayers how current facilities will be paid for, operated and replaced without continual, future requests for additional funding.

EPRD tax base is limited.

Collaborative management and projects: partner on all EPRD operations, facilities and projects with other entities. EPRD should not stand alone.

Use fee equity: EPRD must substantially increase charges for out-of-district users (or decrease residents’ use fees) so that there is near-equity between

Brian Stephens-Hotopp has been named to the Evergreen Metro District board of directors after a tie vote in the May 3 election.

Stephens-Hotopp and incumbent Joe Frisk each received 65 votes. Frisk decided to concede the election, so he wouldn’t trigger a recount, EMD officials said.

Stephens-Hotopp will join the board, along with incumbents John Ellis and James Villenave, who were re-elected on May 3.

May Wildlife Photo Page: Bears

In honor of Colorado Parks & Wildlife’s 125th anniversary this year, the Clear Creek Courant and the Canyon Courier will have a monthly photo page celebrating the state’s amazing wildlife and parks.

Each page will celebrate a different local animal or group of animals, including fun facts provided by CPW. For May, the mountain newspapers are celebrating Colorado’s bears.

BEAR FUN FACTS: • The grizzly bear, the largest of North American terrestrial carnivores, was once fairly common in western Colorado. After 1900, the populations declined rapidly.

Grizzly bears are classified as an endangered species in the state

and haven’t been seen in several decades. While some have argued to reintroduce the native species, Colorado Parks & Wildlife is opposed.

• With the demise of the grizzly bear, the black bear is Colorado’s largest carnivore. Although called black bears, they can be honeycolored, blond, brown, cinnamon or black. They may have a tan muzzle or white spot on the chest.

• Adult females are called sows, adult males are called boars and youngsters are called cubs. Depending on the season, food supply and gender, black bears may weigh 100-450 pounds. Black bears measure about 3 feet high when on all four feet, and can be 5 feet tall when standing on their back legs.

for their first year, denning with the mother and littermates over the winter. By the time of their second spring, they will be self-reliant and will separate from their mother by the second autumn. An adult black bear may have a range from 10 to 250 square miles.

• CPW’s Area 1, which includes Clear Creek, Park and Gilpin counties and western Jeffco, recorded 273 bear sightings and conflicts in 2021.

This was the fifth-most in the state, according to CPW staff. Area 1 also had 63 bears breaking into dwellings, the most in the state. Thirty conflicts were associated with chicken coops, and 40 with birdfeeders.

• Mother bears teach their young to forage for natural foods, such as berries, nuts and insects. Thus, people shouldn’t allow bears to become “garbage” bears by carelessly handling food, scraps and garbage.

Bears can change their habits to seek food from human residences and trash cans, which sometimes leads to unfortunate outcomes for bears and humans. Rolling up sleeves at Inter-Canyon Fire Protection District Foothills community members showed up May 16 to donate blood at ICFPD station 3

Inter-Canyon Fire Protection District collected over 19 pints of blood at a blood drive May 16.

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood and/or platelets, according to the American Red Cross.

The blood drive was sponsored by Marshdale Elementary PTA, Green Valley & Richmond Hill Wildfire Awareness and Miranda L Tucker, LCSW. Miranda Tucker, member of the Marshdale Elementary PTA, heard comments from local first responders about the national shortage of blood. That is when she got the idea to hold a blood drive in the community.

“Vitalant made it super easy, and Inter-Canyon jumped at the opportunity to host,” Tucker said.

Tucker, mom to an outgoing fifth grader and incoming kindergartner at Marshdale, rolled up her sleeve to donate May 16 as well. She recognized this was one of the first opportunities to host a blood drive in a while due to COVID-19.

green has kids at Marshdale. She came out Monday morning to give blood and was hoping for a big turnout.

“I try to support anything the school does,” she said.

Donorovich said she is aware of the blood shortage, and her donation went faster than expected.

Suzy Chairez has been working as a phlebotomist for seven years.

The past few years she has spent working with Vitalant. The best part of the job for Chairez is seeing the impact her collections make.

“[The best part is] definitely collecting the blood, knowing each donation can save up to three lives,” she said.

For nervous, first time donors, Chairez generally makes light conversation and makes sure the donor is comfortable. Her goal is to ensure they have a good experience so they will come back to donate again.

Chairez also noted that donors can get a text when their unit of blood is used, thus keeping them engaged in the process.

It’s that time of the year again.

More than a dozen farmers markets are opening across the Denver metro area, bringing with them a bounty of offerings such as farm-fresh produce, handcrafted soaps and even ... giant snakes?

Some markets are already up and running, such as the Saturday market at the Southwest Plaza in Jefferson County or the Sunday market at the Highlands Ranch Town Center.

“It’s a happening thing to do,” said Bodhi Allen, social media manager for Metro Denver Farmers’ Market, the oldest collection of markets in the metro area. “The social aspects are part of the whole thrill of it.”

Formed more than 45 years ago, Metro Denver Farmers’ Market is run by a coalition of longstanding Colorado farms and includes the markets at Southwest Plaza and Highlands Ranch as well as ones in Lakewood, Littleton and Commerce City.

Each market offers more than 30 vendors and sees hundreds of patrons. Allen said the markets’ success hinges on the relationships vendors built with the community.

“People are looking for something fresher than the grocery store,” Allen said. “Over the years, customers build relationships with these farmers and these vendors, and they trust us.”

Alan Mazzotti, owner of Mazzotti’s Farm in Hudson, has been a leader with the Metro Denver Farmers’ Market group for years. His father was an original founder, Mazzotti said, during a time when the U.S. Department of Agriculture was sponsoring local farmers to push their products through more urban markets.

“I love talking with the people,” Mazzotti said. “I have customers from day one that still come to the market today.”

Mazzotti said he offers “a little bit of everything” from his roughly 80-acre farm.

But urged market-goers to be patient as much of the highly sought-after produce, such as corn and peaches, won’t come into season until later this summer, around July and August.

And while some vendors offer a variety of produce from in-state and out, Mazzotti said his items are strictly Colorado grown. That can cause some sacrifices, Mazzotti said, such as having to cut down on corn stock given this year’s already dire drought.

“The water situation is going to be a big problem,” Mazzotti said, though he is hopeful that through his partnership with other farmers there will still be enough to go around at the market.

Allen, the social media manager for Denver Metro, said it’s a reminder that market seasons are often a great unknown.

“We’re at the whim of the elements in terms of how successful the season is,” she said.

“These are all places we’ve been and met people — we have connections all over,” Becker said.

And it’s not just fruits and vegetables that customers can expect from these markets. Vendors selling artisanal items such as handmade bath products, local wine and decorative plants are also present.

Carol Campbell, whose company Cecolors and Company can be found Sundays at the Highlands Ranch Town Center market, hand-makes hundreds of bars of soap each week.

Originally a hobby of her husband’s, soap making is something Campbell fell in love with and has been doing for about 25 years. Being an artist as well, Campbell’s products, imbued with subtle spectrums of color, are each wrapped in strips of watercolor-painted paper.

“I love the farmers market,” Campbell said. “I get to see my regulars every week, and I also meet new people every week who then become regulars.”

Depending on when patrons choose to visit the market at Southwest Plaza, they may run into a 40-pound reticulated python, the largest snake in the world.

Mason Stiegera, who founded the Littleton-based Righteous Reptile Rescue, will often bring various reptiles and amphibians to the market as the weather becomes warmer. Along with just wanting them to have some fresh air, the reptiles and amphibians are also open to adopt as Stiegera’s rescue center is constantly searching for new homes.

Markets will run until mid- to late fall, with some closing as early as September and others as late as November.

Tell us a little bit about yourself “Throughout high school, I have participated in sports as a student athlete. All four years I played football, contributing to level 3, JV, and varsity teams throughout my career. In the spring my time would be taken up by off-season football training as well as participating in varsity track and field. I ran short distance sprints, such as the 100-meterr, 200-meter, and relay races. After graduation I will be attending Texas Tech University and I will be majoring in Mechanical Engineering, pursuing my Bachelor’s as well as my Master’s degree.”

What is your favorite memory from high school?

Describe a personal experience that you encountered during high school that significantly impacted you as a person or changed your outlook on life.

“Throughout my four years on Awest’s football team, we have had two very challenging seasons. My sophomore year, our varsity team went 0-10, and played a large amount of sophomores and juniors, which led to a slightly improved 2-5 COVID-19 season. My class of teammates put in more blood, sweat, and tears than any other group, and it paid off in the form of a 8-2 record, first round bye, and playoff run. Not to mention beating the RV varsity squad for the first time in school history.”

What are the defining qualities of your graduating class and why?

“We are intelligent, resilient, and most importantly, united. Being the only class to experience a pre-COVID year of high school, we have been through everything together. From being freshmen in a world of giants, to not getting to end sophomore year, to missing the majority of junior year, and finally a semi-normal senior year, every single day of it my class stood together and persevered. Now we are prepared to meet new people, make memories, and strive for greatness.

Yet, as we move on in the world, the bonds and friendships between students that we have, we will never forget.”

“My favorite memory from high school comes from my senior football season. Bouncing back from two rough seasons prior, Awest headed into league play with a 4-1 record. Our next game was against Columbine.

It was a defensive battle all game long, and with less than 10 seconds on the clock the score was 17-21, Columbine was up, but our offense had the ball.

The last play of the game, the clock, ran down to zero, and our QB and wide receiver connected in the end zone for a touchdown!

Final score 24-21, and Awest left with a homecoming victory.”

Tell us a little bit about yourself “My hobbies include music and softball. These two things take up the majority of my time, but when they don’t, I love spending time with my family and making coffee runs.After graduation I will be attending George Fox University in the fall with a double major in biology and music and playing softball as a George Fox Bruin.”

Describe a personal experience that you encountered during high school that significantly impacted you as a person or changed your outlook on life.

“It would be All State Choir. I worked extremely hard for my audition and ended up making it in.

That entire experience was enlightening and beautiful.

Being surrounded by a group of such passionate people brought a certain weightless feeling upon my heart. That adventure shifted my path and revealed to me a passion I didn’t know that I had for music. Since then, I decided that I would major in music and keep it in my life for as long as I live.”

What is your favorite memory from high school?

“My favorite memory from high school was my senior game for softball. While the game itself was memorable, my favorite memory came from after the game. I was the last one to leave the field other

than my coach because I am slow to get packed up. When I got to my car, I remember looking back on the field and remembering the feeling of when I first stepped on it when I was in sixth grade, and reflecting upon who I am now.

I had the rare opportunity to recognize and enjoy a moment of gratefulness, perfection and peace.”

What are the defining qualities of your graduating class and why?

“Whether it’s from a friend’s Instagram story to Tik Toks, I seem to see many people from my graduating class with smiles and surrounded by friends. We have missed a lot in the past three years of our lives whether that be family, friends, or time. Even though life is difficult, and continues to be, the graduating class of 2022 is working hard to live our lives to the fullest and enjoy each day.”

Tell us a little bit about yourself “For all four years of high school, I’ve been on the varsity girls basketball team. I am a four-year lettering athlete for basketball and lettered in track and field my sophomore year.

Outside of school, I have been a member of the Denver Public Safety Youth Leadership team since freshman year. I am planning on attending University of Colorado Boulder and plan on looking into their nursing program and minoring in arts.”

Describe a personal experience that you encountered during high school that significantly impacted you as a person or changed your outlook on life.

“When I would have long in-depth conversations with my 11th grade English teacher from everything about English even to our everyday lives. I will always remember her kindness and personability. Through these conversations,

I learned how important teachers are in our community. They truly do shape the upcoming generations not only through education, but also on how to be a good person.”

What is your favorite memory from high school?

“One of my favorite memories was when I found out freshman year that I’d be the only freshman with a varsity spot.”

What are the defining qualities of your graduating class and why?

“A couple of qualities I’d use to describe the Class of ‘22 is resilient and eager. On behalf of my graduating class, I can say that our high school career has been an ugly one due to COVID. We had to deal with a pandemic right in the middle of our few years of high school and deal with outbreaks and mask mandates whilst in school. However, we all are still pushing on

Tell us a little bit about yourself “I’ve been an active musician at Pomona High School throughout my four years, marching in the band, competing in jazz festivals and this year attending Tri-M in Colorado Springs. My plans for after graduation are to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston.”

Tell us a little bit about yourself “I have played basketball and soccer all four years of high school while also being the senior captain of the basketball team. I also am currently on the track and field team. Academically, I am part of the NHS chapter at Arvada West, NTHS chapter, and the vice president of my Education and Leadership chapter.

Through these communities, I work to plan community service events and events around my school. After graduation I plan to go to Central College in Iowa called to pursue my academic career in elementary education alongside my athletic careers in basketball and track.”

Describe a personal experience that you encountered during high school that significantly impacted you as a person or changed your outlook on life.

“Taking creative writing class with Mr. Tanguma. While some walked out of this class content with the elective credit I walked out of this class with the new learning that it is okay to be vulnerable. Through his effortless care and never-ending support, he became someone who taught me how to open up and find light within the darkness that I was going through.

He changed my mentality on life and showed me that being vulnerableand open about our emotions helps empower us in the future.”

What is your favorite memory from high school?

“My favorite memory from high school is going to all the school events. From sporting events to plays to different dances, I got

“Some defining qualities of my class are resilience, inclusivity, and open mindedness. These past few years, especially through COVID, our class was hit with more adversity than any class before. But I also recognized a change in inclusivity in our class.

There was once a divide, but our class figured out ways to host activities that included each and every senior.

I believe many schools struggle with figuring out a way to include the different populations within their school but here at Arvada West there was never a question about who was included because everyone was wanted and welcome.”

Describe a personal experience that you encountered during high school that significantly impacted you as a person or changed your outlook on life.

“One experience in high school that really changed my outlook on life was when they recently started cutting arts programs.

This decision really made me realize how far a program can come and then just be dismissed and turned into one class for each art. I’ve put in so many hours with different friends and students around me that when I come back as a Panther Alumni I want to see the arts flourish.”

What is your favorite memory from high school?

“My favorite high school memory definitely has to be the late night marching competitions and jazz

“One personal experience that impacted me a lot and affected my outlook was COVID as it made me be more grateful for what I have and realized how lucky I was. Besides school being shut down, COVID had a minimal impact on my life but others where more severely impacted, losing their loved ones and jobs.”

What is your favorite memory from high school?

“Probably my favorite memory from high school would be being told that I successfully progressed to make the honor roll. For many years I struggled and was at the bottom of my classes. And even after I started to improve, I still struggled. I made it a personal goal of mine to improve. It wasn’t easy, especially while doing remote learning. I was pretty burned out by the end of the school year, but when I got the email telling me I made the honor roll list, it definitely felt like it was worth it.”

What are the defining qualities of your graduating class and why?

“I feel like the defining quality of my graduating class is perseverance, even through difficulty and adversity.”

I am in three of our top choirs, including our acapella group, a member of choir leadership, I co-directed the improv troupe and senior show and I played major roles in our last two productions in the theater. In addition to performing arts, I am a member of our new student welcoming committee. After high school, I plan to attend School of Mines for computer science, and eventually I want to start a business and get back into theater; maybe they’ll happen together.”

Describe a personal experience that you encountered during high school that significantly impacted you as a person or changed your outlook on life.

“By joining the Arvada West Theater Company, I’ve grown up immensely. By joining the troupe, I became infinitely busier and I had so much work to do. The processes taught me how to manage my time and work proficiently and quickly.

More importantly, it has made me so much more appreciative of life.

All of the stories we put on have a special place in my heart because each of them has taught me something about life. Whether it’s the importance of relationships or

“My favorite memory is performing in the Addams Family musical this year.

There’s nothing quite like the feeling you get when you bow for the last time after spending three months working on a show. Sure, choir and orchestra concerts are great to be in, but there’s something so special about live theater audiences that’s impossible to replicate. I can still feel tears resurfacing thinking about the exhilarating applause that grew even louder when I took my final bow. For me, it felt like the best congratulations for all my hard work that I put into theater this year.”

What are the defining qualities of your graduating class and why?

“The Class of ‘22 is the class of spirit and community. Never before have I seen a class so dedicated to the school and to each other. Every spirit day we have, the senior class is always representing and participating, and even when we don’t know everyone, we are still together and still are friends with each other. Though we may not be the biggest class, we are definitely the strongest “team” in the school.”

Tell us a little bit about yourself “In addition to being a part of NHS, I have been a part of almost every activity offered in the Columbine instrumental music program. This includes marching band, concert band, wind ensemble, jazz band, pit orchestra, winter guard and winter percussion. In Eritrea when a young man turns 16, he must register for the Army. I was just a high school student who wanted to continue to study and provide a better life for my family.I am going to study civil eengineering at CU Boulder. I want to use my love of math to design buildings to improve the environment. I also want to improve the lives of my family, and I know that engineering is a field with great career opportunities.

When I arrived in the United States everything was new because I didn’t speak the English

language but I kept working hard anyway. Now, I am going to graduate from high school, I am working and still learning about the language and culture here. My life is better now than it was in Africa. I have found that American culture has embraced me, and I love that I can hang out with my friends and just be a regular American kid.

What is your favorite memory from high school?

In my Colorado high school, I have gotten to learn about economics and I find it very fascinating. I would love to continue to learn about how to invest money to build wealth for myself and my family.

Tell us a little bit about yourself “Throughout high school I have participated in many activities, but the two that had the largest impact on me were playing for the golf team and being an NHS member. I learned many valuable life lessons from each endeavor and am thankful I participated in both. NHS helped motivate me to give back to my community and helped me decide to become an outdoor lab leader, an experience which I loved. After graduation I am going to go to CSU and will decide what I want to study while there. I have also greatly considered doing a semester abroad.”

Describe a personal experience that you encountered during high school that significantly impacted you as a person or changed your outlook on life.

“One of the most influential experiences for me was my class presentations. One thing I noticed was that you are either prepared or you aren’t. Being prepared helps, but regardless of how you prepare, another thing I realized was once you’re in the moment, all you can do is your best. No matter what happens, in a week people won’t remember what words you stuttered, and in the end, we’re all humans just trying to do our best in life. When you look at it like that, there is really no reason to be intimidated by anything.”

What is your favorite memory from high school?

“My favorite memories from high school were definitely spirit weeks and assemblies. It was

always so fun to dress up with everyone else and really feel the school spirit flowing across the building. There was no other time where you could feel this more, however, then at the school assemblies. The energy and excitement was contagious, and it was always a blast yelling, singing and laughing at all of the entertaining events and competitions that we had during these gatherings. It always felt like the school was united and joyful at these times, and I always loved it.”

What are the defining qualities of your graduating class and why?

“Our graduating class is one of incredible character, resilience and pride. No matter where or when there is a school event, there are always students ready to support their friends and classmates. Our class, like others, has overcome many challenges from the pandemic. I believe that we have handled these challenges with maturity and grace and have made the last few years much less painful than they could have been. Throughout high school, our class has matured greatly and now almost everyone in the grade feels like a friend, and that’s truly an incredible feeling.”

Tell us a little bit about yourself “I love to play baseball and basketball, I enjoy working out and hanging out with my friends. After graduation my plan is to attend CSU in Fort Collins, and obtain a bachelor’s in Biology and major in predental in order to get my prerequisites to the dental program.

My career goal is to become an Orthodontist.”

“I played baseball since I was 5-years-old and my love for the sport grew from there. When I was cut from making the varsity team my senior year, it was the most painful experience. I would be lying if I said at that moment I wanted to quit. What this adversity taught me, was resilience and to never give up!

With the support of my family, I realized I could not let that moment define me. I have a lot more to offer the world than baseball. However, this will not stop me from playing when the opportunity arises.”

What is your favorite memory from high school?

“My most memorable moment in high school were the football games. Pomona has a strong culture and school spirit when it comes to sports, especially at the football games. I enjoyed going to the football games with my friends. We had so many fun and memorable moments that I will never forget. One of those

moments was when three of my friends and I dressed up in all white overalls. We painted PHS and class of 2022 all over them.

We really showed our school spirit that night!”

What are the defining qualities of your graduating class and why?

“It’s been said that Class of 2022 is a “lost generation” because our education was impacted due to school closures and being forced to learn online due to COVID-19. I can attest that the 2022 graduating class is not at all “lost.” In fact, it gave us a unique perspective on life. We are a generation that is well versed with technology. We have survived and conquered the pandemic crisis. It is important to remember how we survived and to continue to fight. With no doubt in my mind, the Class of 2022 is strong and resilient!”

“The COVID-19 pandemic changed my outlook on life because it helped me to realize that nothing in life is permanent or guaranteed and that we must keep pushing forward regardless.

Life is not going to stop and wait for you, no matter how much you may wish for it. Life is

going to constantly change and evolve and we have to decide for ourselves to roll with the punches instead of getting knocked out of the ring. We must find beauty in the uncertainties of life.”

What is your favorite memory from high school?

“My favorite memory from high school would have to be when I played Mrs. Potts in the musical “Beauty and the Beast.” I have struggled with stage fright since I began my acting journey my freshman year, so it felt amazing to be able to stand on that stage, devoid of fear as I sung my heart out. I will never forget the feeling of standing on that stage with the lights on me or what it felt like as I walked off that stage to cheering and clapping from the audience.”

What are the defining qualities of your graduating class and why?

“One of the most defining qualities of the Class of 2022 is our resilience.

We managed to claw our way through a global pandemic while maintaining friendships, grades, and hobbies. We refused to let anything get in the way of what was truly important, and that experience has made us all-the-more stronger.”

I am a member of the Soaring Society of America but have only flown a glider twice. This is fewer times than I have, for example, popped the chain off of my bike. I intend to attain an education in this realm — aerospace engineering, that is — once I’ve completed this scholastic year.”

Describe a personal experience that you encountered during high school that significantly impacted you as a person or changed your outlook on life.

“I recall a day in eeconomics class, near the end of the first semester. One lad with whom I’m familiar had been complaining that a certain problem was tough, but he thoroughly intended to figure it out. I’m paraphrasing, but this sort of resolve, even in a concept which to him was largely irrelevant, was notable. The application to us adolescent scholars is probably evident, but this persistence, I’d imagine, is what brought humanity out of the paleolithic.

Seeing as we’re only 11.6 millenia past that point, we’re still largely the same, and the concept applies still.”

What is your favorite memory from high school?

“The scene was a mathematics classroom, wherein I was conversing with the teacher. An amigo entered the class, as we had also intended to discuss the exploration of mathematics, and upon his asking an algebraic question, the teacher proceeded to explain the matter with what I believe to be ironic exasperation.

The amigo got it. To me, that’s the cool bit of high school — to have the tools to acquire curiosity, whilst retaining the freedom to explore it. Perhaps it’s selfish, and perhaps I’m sentimental, but to observe someone find interest in the definition of reality is a very pleasant thing.”

What are the defining qualities of your graduating class and why?

“Introspection is one. Of course, my experience is absolutely biased, but I found that people in this class are willing to think a tad more than what I’ve seen in the past: Though we’re all still teenagers, and in this state, complex thought does arise (if spontaneously), I’ve found people to be reflective about the future, as a supplement to the general shenanigans of adolescence. The effect is, statistically, fairly insignificant, but it’s noticeable, and certainly noteworthy. And, insofar as I can (being, obviously, among this class), I commend us for it.”

Tell us a little bit about yourself “I have been involved in every play and musical since seventh grade and have played a multitude of roles in various shows, including many known leads such as Tybalt from Romeo and Juliet, Audrey from Little Shop of Horrors, Mortica in the Addams family musical, and many more. I have also been in choir since sixth grade and this year I was voted president of choir. I was also a member of NHS. After I graduate, I plan on attending UNLV in Las Vegas to study theater and maybe some business to ultimately have the skills to pass as a voice actor for cartoons and other shows.”

Describe a personal experience that you encountered during high school that significantly impacted you as a person or changed your outlook on life.

“I can confidently say that joining my Upperclassmen friends to play Dungeons and Dragons as often as we could changed me. Not only did we have fun, we grew as people because we got to express parts of ourselves through our characters. I learned a lot about myself. And at the end of the year when they graduated, two of them basically kidnapped me and we went to get bagels and

go to their parties. That was one of the funniest and most free moments of high school.

They helped me discover who I wanted to be.”

What is your favorite memory from high school?

“Most of my favorite memories come from cracking jokes in both theater and choir and writing down random quotes out of context to poke fun at our classmates later. And going to Denny’s late at night after every high school show was always a treat, in more ways than one.

Another good memory from high school is simply being able to get creative with my friends in my classes, especially my theater tech and costume design assignments.”

“Our graduating class has many great traits including the wit and comedy we all share in a special way. Whenever you are down one of us can always find a way to make you smile again. Our class also excels in leadership and teamwork. Even if there is personal trouble between a group, we can always look past our differences to accomplish great things.”

Tell us a little bit about yourself “I’ll be attending Colorado School of Mines this coming fall. I’ve spent most of my high school career volunteering in my community through organizations such as The Denver Dream Center, Lasagna Love, and Girls On The Run. Skiing is a favorite hobby of mine, and I especially love to uphill ski in the backcountry.

I’m also very passionate about singing, and I recently sang at Carnegie Hall this past April.”

Tell us a little bit about yourself “I’ve been a part of our school’s theater department since our sophomore year and loved every moment of it! I’ve also been a part of our school’s Diversity Club and Student Voice as well as our National Honors Society — all of which I’ve enjoyed immensely! After graduation, I plan to attend CU Boulder to major in women and gender studies and minor in Spanish.”

“I’d never failed before. That’s not a brag, that’s a “I was driven by intense fear and refused to allow myself to fail”. Then in AP US History, I received my first F on an essay.

I PANICKED. Was my life over?

My high school career ruined?

It wasn’t! I went to my teacher and talked and life went on.

Afterwards, I let myself fail a little more. I took risks, made mistakes and, while I’m still not doing it perfectly, I’m much more gentle with myself when I do fail. Please remember to fail!

It’s how we grow!”

“Three years ago, I was invited to participate in a class through the Jefferson Center for Mental Health meant specifically to help the youth in the county. The course was then offered to the local teachers. It was such a heartwarming experience to see the teachers from my school take the time to join in the class to expand their knowledge on the current mental health and suicide crisis in our country. I’m very grateful to have teachers who care so much about their student’s well-being.”

What is your favorite memory from high school?

“My favorite memory from high school was in my AP Lit class. Though I have many unforgettable memories from that class, my favorite was a day during our musicality unit in poetry. We had to pass around five poems in the room

and annotate for different musical elements. After the first round, one of the tables folded their poem into a paper airplane and threw it to the next group. Soon, it became a class-wide game, and everyone began folding up the poems into paper planes to send to the next group to annotate.”

What are the defining qualities of your graduating class and why?

“The most defining quality of my graduating class is strong perseverance that borders on stubbornness. I’ve seen my class and my school evolve so much since the pandemic, and I’ve been so proud of the changes I’ve witnessed.

This year’s graduating class has made it through a lot of hardship, and they have done nothing but make the most of the new changes we’re seeing today. There is a strong sense of determination that keeps us moving forward and embracing change.”

What is your favorite memory from high school?

“Sophomore year I was a part of our school’s musical “Once Upon A Mattress”. I was stressed throughout the production as my schoolwork had piled on.

I remember sitting backstage doing my homework whenever there was enough light. It was during this production that several of the actors pulled me

away from my work and we spent the show goofing off and getting me out of my head! It was the first time I was able to let myself go and have some fun. Since then, I’ve learned to balance schoolwork and fun and the importance of doing so!”

What are the defining qualities of your graduating class and why?

“Pure persistence! I’m so proud of my class! Our sophomore year we were hit with a pandemic and have lived with that now for two years. And yet my fellow classmates and I have persisted! They’ve continued to find safe ways to make the events they’ve planned happen, they’ve continued to go to show up, they’ve continued to learn how to grow and how to support each other. I’m proud that we kept moving despite all the odds!”

Session Series at Floyd Hill: Week Two

The second annual four-week long Session Series at Floyd Hill started this month, with May 18 seeing a crowd of about 100 and almost everyone with a bike. The series started May 11, with May 25 being the third race, and June 1 being the final.

The mountain biking race is meant to “raise funds for local non-profits in the area that are bike centric, and focus on trail building

and community advocacy,” according to Elizabeth Schmidtmann, the production director of the event.

“It’s awesome that Clear Creek does this,” attendee Patrick Lee said before the May 18 race. Mountain biking for about five years now, Lee came in sixth in the open pro category in the May 11 race, with last year’s being his very first. On May 18 he came in seventh in the open pro with a time of 4:09.91.

There are six categories people

Calvin Dougherty, 14, placed 15th in the 14-18 category with a time of 5:34.54.

“Pro is what you want to do if you wanna race with the fast guys,” said Lee. Each category has a first, second and third place for male and female.

Each competitor gets one shot down the track each race — the

Mateo Clagg, who also competed last year, said he’s done the new race trail at least 50 times before race day — twice that day alone. “I only live about 10 minutes away, so it’s easy to come by,” he said. He ended the day in sixth place in his category at 4:39.98.

“I pedaled a lot. Cleanest run I’ve done,” he said after.

This year’s race had newcomers too, such as Jordann Jordan who’s been mountain biking since 2007.

Hanak came first in the men’s open pro with a time of 3:53.54.

Calvin Dougherty, 14, came in 15th with a time of 5:34.54. Even though he crashed a few times — once into a cameraman — he said, “I know I can come back next week and do better.”
