Robotics team members at CHS find like-minded friends

The robotics team housed at Conifer High School is the little team that could.

The 20-member Team Blitz 2085 from both Conifer and Evergreen schools has overcome the odds of having $8,000 worth of its equipment stolen in March 2020 and persevered through a pandemic.

A park in Bailey has returned to private status after 22 years as a public facility because of the issues that many area parks have experienced: overcrowding, vandalism and overuse.

Weakland-Fawks Park, which is in the Burland Ranchettes subdivision, is now for local residents only. The Burland Homeowners Association board notified Park County officials that it was terminating its agreement and taking back the park, which became public in 2000.

“I understand the challenges (the homeowners association) faced with it being a public park in their community,” said Park County Commissioner Amy Mitchell. “I understand their decision. I understand some of the challenges of people from out of the area using the park. It’s been overrun.”

The Burland Homeowners Association board had an agreement with Park County that in exchange for the county covering liability insurance premiums, the HOA agreed to maintain the park including the playground, trails, the outdoor toilets and the pavilion.

However, local residents are finding it difficult to use their neighborhood park, plus maintenance costs have increased substantially, according to Debra Stephen, vice president of the Burland Homeowners Association. Daycare groups and people traveling through the area on vacation have become regulars, making it less possible for residents to use the park. Plus folks from outside the area are traveling through the subdivision to get to the park.

“Weakland-Fawks has been listed as a public park on many online sites, resulting in hikers from other places using (and littering) our trails, with attendant wear and tear,” according to a letter from the homeowners association. “Our Port-a-Potty, playground and picnic area are listed as a great rest stop for travelers passing through on 285 and are frequently used as such. Our roads, already in abysmal condition, are worn out by the extra traffic, and our resident walkers are threatened by speeding cars.”

“We’re trying to get the word out that it’s no longer a public park,” she said. “We are hoping that signage and towing signs in the parking lot will deter people. It has not been fair to our residents. They deserve to use the park.”

Stephen said HOA officials have been contacting websites and other organizations to explain that it is now a private facility.

Park County manager Tom Eisenman said the situation is a matter of no good deed goes unpunished.

“I hope that the local Burland Ranchettes community will have the park available for their residents,” Eisenman said.

The award signified the team’s unique approach to getting a robot to autonomously find, pick up, aim and shoot game balls into baskets, which was this year’s challenge in the FIRST Robotics Competition.

Such a great feat for a team that gets its funding from donations from area businesses and organizations such as Conifer Rotary, Kiwanis and Conifer Newcomers & Neighbors.

The team has a school sponsor, CHS technology teacher Eric Halingstad, and has access to the school’s technology lab, which has 3-D printers, a laser printer, tools and more.

Other teams around the country have much larger budgets to fund projects.

According to its website, “FIRST inspires young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering

and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster wellrounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication and leadership.”

For team members who spent much of their spring break in the CHS workshop, the robotics team is a place where they can be themselves and make friends with others who love robotics and engineering.

They agree that the team’s workshop is where they have fun working on their robot, and they do homework together and help each other.

Team mentor Mindy Hanson is proud that girls make up about a third of the team. Students in eighth- through 12th grade who are interested in joining the team can contact team mentor Mindy Hanson at mindy@alphapixel.com or by calling 303-870-1321.

In the process of creating the robot, students learn leadership skills, how to work collaboratively and more. In fact, the team — after competing in regionals — decided to rebuild its robot during spring break to make it sturdier before a competition at the University of Denver.

“During spring break, we put every second into rebuilding the entire robot,” junior Rhys Hanson explained.

Mindy, who is Rhys’ mom, noted that the team is student-led, so students make decisions on everything — what the robot will look like and how it will perform the tasks. Each year, FIRST creates a new challenge that teams must meet.

FIRST stresses what is called coopertition – cooperating despite being in a competition, Rhys explained.

“So if someone is missing a part, other teams will help,” he said.

“Without help from other teams, that team would not have been able to compete.”

The idea, team mentor Aaliyah LaBarge explained, is to make sure all teams can compete at the highest level.

Alex Polackowyj, a sophomore at Evergreen High School, found his niche in the robotics team, saying it’s the perfect place to design and create, plus he has made friends and has fun.

Oscar Yaun, a sophomore at CHS, has been working with robots since fifth grade, including at West Jef-

ferson Middle School.

“Robotics is something I understand more than other stuff,” he said, explaining that he will likely go to college for engineering.

LaBarge, a former team member, graduated from CHS in 2021 with the first cord awarded for robotics and has returned as a mentor. As a mentor, she wants to pass on her knowledge and help the team navigate the bumps that arise as they brainstorm how to build a robot that performs the tasks set out by FIRST challenge.

She originally got involved with robotics at West Jefferson Middle School, where she was put into a robotics elective class. Although she was angry at first, she quickly came to love the STEM classes, and she’s been hooked ever since.

She is now working on a degree in aerospace engineering and volunteers as a mentor for the team.

“When I joined the team my freshman year, I thought, ‘These kids are really smart.’ Then I became the lead engineer, and then I realized, ‘I’m one of the smart kids.’”

7 candidates face off on issues concerning Evergreen Fire/Rescue Station 1, wildfire mitigation, grants among topics

The seven candidates for the Evergreen Fire/Rescue board of directors are passionate about the community and the fire department, and they answered questions about wildfire mitigation, replacing Station 1, grants, firefighter morale and more.

Three seats are open on the EFR board. Two incumbents — Jeff deDisse and Mike Gregory — are running to retain their seats, and they are being challenged by five others: Kenny Erhardt, Wayne Hazeldine, Julie Ann Courim, Stacey Ballinger and John Putt. All have been heavily involved with EFR either as former volunteer firefighters or with Evergreen’s Community Wildfire Protection Plan, and one was a dispatcher for Evergreen and later Jeffcom.

“Downtown Evergreen needs a station close by,” Erhardt said. “It needs to be a modern station to fit all the equipment and the personnel.”

The challengers were more cautious, saying building a new station was important, but they didn’t have enough information about the fire department’s budget to compare it with other priorities or to know whether now was the right time to construct the station.

Courim, who served on the Foothills Fire board of directors in the past, said one of the reasons she’s running for the EFR board deals with fiduciary responsibility, including the percentage of the budget that goes to the station.

“My job (if elected) would be to research to find out what is the station’s budget,” Courim said. “Are we putting all our eggs in one basket? I don’t have that information.”

Putt, a retired firefighter who is now a real estate agent, added: “I look forward to being able to critically evaluate – should we put $8 million, $9 million into the new station or should we be putting it to something else?”

Wildland fire budget The challengers said they couldn’t put a number on the percentage of EFR dollars that should be put toward the wildland fire budget, an issue that has been brought up by residents in the district as they worry about wildfire and evacuation.

Ballinger, a former dispatcher for

Evergreen and later for Jeffcom, said all parts of the fire district’s budget should be looked at on an item-by-item basis.

“There is only so much money in this pot,” Ballinger said. “You have to ask what are the highest priorities for the community and what money is being spent on. The highest priority for me is evacuation routes. If 100 percent of the evacuation routes are impassable, that’s a problem.”

Gregory, a former volunteer firefighter, noted that EFR is growing its wildland fire programs exponentially.

signature drink that the couple serves at the reception. Partners at Piney Wine & Spirits in Kittredge say they will help the couple develop that drink.

Partner Chad George said he’d like to see couples pay more attention to the wine they serve at their receptions, noting that even on a limited budget, couples can serve better than mass-produced wines from some little-known wineries.

Couples looking for a more unique rehearsal dinner location can try the Muddy Buck in downtown Evergreen, which is partnering with Murphy’s Mountain Grill to host dinners. Chris Courtney said everything from hors d’oeuvres to buffets is available.

DeLane Robinson with ABC Music, Video and Photography said weddings definitely have changed in the 37 years he’s been in the business. He said attire is more relaxed — fewer tuxedos and more shirts and slacks, jeans and vests for the men.

“I’m seeing a lot less traditional things,” Robinson said. “There’s no bouquet toss or garter toss.

Couples are wanting to do something different than what their parents did. They want to get on with the party.”

Wedding trends continue to change, and that was evident as 25 vendors talked to couples on April 3 during the Wedding and Event Showcase at the Evergreen Lake House.

Caterers, photographers, florists and more lined the rooms to talk to more than 130 couples planning to say their wedding vows this year at the Lake House.

They sampled food, talked about signature drinks and looked at sample wedding videos. Others walked around the Lake House, imagining where their guests would sit and the views they would see on the special day.

Vendors who have been working weddings for years say weddings and receptions have morphed to be more relaxed. They see fewer formal weddings with sit-down dinner receptions.

Instead, in terms of food, wedding receptions have buffets and make-your-own bars.

“We’re catering more taco bars, gyros bars and barbecue,” said Corin Kostroski with Encore Catering in Englewood. “We’re seeing more buffets. Rarely do couples have sit-down dinners.”

She surmised it was because of budgets, plus interactive receptions were in, especially after the pandemic.

Campfire Evergreen, for example, was providing samples of its pizza, sliders, mac and cheese, with a s’mores bar. Other caterers served hors d’oeuvres and other finger food.

Evergreen’s Holly Berry, which has been in business for 35 years, is creating more of what the florists called “boho” or Bohemian wedding flowers. The bouquets are big, loose and airy, with a lot of grasses and greenery, according to owner Pam Gilbert.

Florist Laura Wood added that they were still seeing traditional flowers at weddings, too.

Hazeldine, a former firefighter, explained that he would like to see more money used to mitigate evacuation routes and to educate property owners about the need for mitigation.

Putt added that the most important thing about the wildfire budget was looking for better ways to leverage the fire district’s dollars to get as much done as possible.

DeDisse, a fifth-generation Evergreen resident, noted that wildfire was the biggest threat to his family’s ranch, so he understands residents’ concerns. He said other government agencies needed to do their part to help with mitigation.

Obtaining grants The candidates discussed who is responsible for applying for grants to pay for mitigation.

DeDisse, a retired firefighter and the fire board president, said while he believes in grants to help with mitigation, EFR shouldn’t have the sole responsibility of writing the applications because it doesn’t have the staff. Gregory and Erhardt said EFR should consider hiring a full-time grant writer depending on whether money was available for that position.

Courim, Putt and Ballinger agreed that EFR should be the clearinghouse and leader in obtaining grants, saying the work needed to be done collaboratively between the fire department and the community.

Hazeldine added that grants can help the department do more with fewer taxpayer dollars.

Volunteer firefighter recruitment, morale With volunteerism in fire departments waning nationwide, the candidates agreed that volunteers were important to the community, and EFR needed to stem the tide of firefighters leaving the district with few entering the ranks. However, the department has embarked on an aggressive recruitment campaign to add firefighters that includes allowing recruits to train for specific areas of fire service.

Gregory was pleased with the department’s new recruitment strategy, saying whatever the department can do to make the volunteers happy was important, while deDisse advocated for leadership continuity to further the department’s recruiting and training goals.

Erhardt added that the department needed to make volunteer trainings enjoyable and to make volunteers feel important by listening to their

concerns and ideas.

Hazeldine was concerned that the new recruiting and training plan is watering down the volunteer ranks.

“I believe they should go through the full academy,” Hazeldine said.

“Education is key for firefighting.”

Courim said that at the fire board level, “One of the top things we can do is provide (volunteers) a voice through top level of the department.

That’s a critical part of understanding the morale.”

Other topics All candidates agreed that EFR’s community medicine was a good program, providing vital medical services to elderly by visiting them regularly.

They also agreed that EFR needed to work with all property owners including Denver Mountain Parks, Jeffco Open Space and private owners to make the areas safer from wildfire.

VOICES Primaries….the final four of voting

H

ave you ever asked yourself why our Congress members are not more responsive to us citizens? We want them to work together to solve our problems. Instead, they just battle each other refusing any compromise.

We ask them to address the high cost of healthcare, the growing budget deficit, border porousness and the widening of the political divide, to name a few. Nothing happens, they don’t even try. Why don’t voters get any respect from our elected officials?

The reason is because these officials are elected by their political party, not by voters. Consider that 85% of elections are decided in the primary, not the general election.

Our politicians don’t see us as their bosses, it’s the 8-15% of party loyalists who show up in primary elections to whom Congress owes their allegiance. Further, the political parties arrange for the PAC raised funds to elect and reelect loyal party sycophants.

In 2018, record numbers of registered voters showed up for primary elections, yet that was just 19.6% of voters. Only 21 states have totally

open primaries. The barriers to open primaries vary, but it is safe to say that millions of unaffiliated voters are either prohibited from voting altogether or must jump through hoops to vote.

The constitution says in Article 1 that Columnist “The times, places, and manner of holding elections for Senators and Representatives shall be prescribed in each state by the legislature thereof.” By practice, many state Democratic and Republican parties think they own the election process, and they strive to preclude non- party members from voting in primaries.

Political parties are not ever mentioned in the Constitution and the cost of elections is paid with public funds, not party funds. So, elections belong to voters, not parties.

In Colorado, the voter rolls show voter registration at 1,070,029 Democrats, 955,143 Republicans and 1,652,442 unaffiliated voters. This means that almost half (45%) of

Colorado voters are not members of either party, so having our candidates chosen only by party members makes little or no sense. Recognizing this in 2016, Colorado voters decided to allow unaffiliated voters to participate in primary elections.

Here’s how it works: Registered unaffiliated voters select which party primary they want or if there is no selection, both party primary ballots are mailed by the Secretary of State. The unaffiliated voter must select one ballot or the other, complete it and return it. The ballot not used is to be discarded. If a voter returns both, neither ballot will be counted, and the Secretary has much information at her disposal to ensure that ballots are not duplicated.

It would seem that a just system is in place, but in February, some Republicans, led by the same lawyer who advised the former president on how to overthrow the presidential election, filed a suit to cancel the right of unaffiliated voters to vote in a primary election. The suit alleges that their free speech and free association are violated. A bipartisan group including former

governors Bill Owens and Bill Ritter, former Senator Hank Brown, Mayor Hancock, Chamber president Kelly Brough and Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers all signed a brief to support the law and oppose the suit. How could allowing all citizens to select our political leaders be wrong?

Primary elections are vitally important. They are the final-four of politics. If we continue to allow 10% of each party to choose who will be on the ballot, we will keep having elected officials who ignore voters’ wishes. The primary elections are scheduled for June 28. Make sure you are part of it. I would never try to tell you for whom to vote, but I urge you to select the best candidates and give them your vote. It matters.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Daylight savings time: the annual debate I read Greg Romberg’s article in the March 24 edition of the Canyon Courier with a great deal of amusement, noting that this has been an annual debate during all of my considerable years. In 1962, I worked for the State of Colorado covering the thirteen north-eastern counties, or about 1/4 of the state. The State government generously furnished me a Studebaker Lark as a vehicle. In those days, a radio in your state car was a luxury that the powers to be thought the citizenry wouldn’t tolerate. Since those many miles required that I was on the road nearly daily until the late hours of the night, I bought my own am radio for company on the lonely roads. There was very little to listen to besides late night talk radio where people would call into the station to discuss their opinions about various happenings.

With a leg fractured and a grotesquely askew, she was in obvious severe pain. One call to animal control eventually led to a repeat call as officers were initially unable to locate the suffering animal.

I wish that all drivers could take a moment to slow down and enjoy the natural beauty which surrounds us in Evergreen. Evergreen should be appreciated as a refuge from the fast pace of city life, not an extension of it. Slow down and look around, enjoy this brief life. While some animalcar collisions are unavoidable, most are not. A small reduction in speed affords a large increase in reaction time and safety. Most Evergreen residents can recall very close calls when driving even slightly faster would likely have resulted in another beautiful wild animal being maimed, and ultimately killed. This concern is even greater at night when deer and elk are nocturnally feeding and moving. Sometimes the legal speed limit is still too fast. Since wild game may not compre-

While the headlines may be focused on primaries and mid-term elections, on the near horizon are these elections with candidates running for positions on board seats in Special Districts that govern our fire, water, sanitation districts and recreation centers. These non-partisan entities are closer to home. Their policy-making decisions affect our daily lives. Meetings are typically open to the public and led by boards comprised of people who may be your neighbors or friends.

Sadly, their actions are often ignored by the very population they are elected to serve. With so many (more than 190 in Jefferson County), there is ample opportunity to exercise the right to vote and become more involved in your community by attending any upcoming candidate forums. Hummingbirds go into nightly torpor to survive cold temperatures

W

hen hummingbirds fly to Colorado in spring, the weather does not always cooperate. Birds flying around feeders covered with snow are often the subject of social media posts. How do these wee birds manage to survive late snowstorms and freezing temperatures?

Hummingbirds, as it turns out, go into a state of nightly “torpor.” John K. Terres, author of “The Audubon Society Encyclopedia of Birds,” defined torpidity as “a state of inactivity that is brought about by certain physiological changes – greatly lowered heart rate, breathing rate, and metabolism, and a greatly reduced response to external stimulation.”

According to Hummingbird Market, birds will drop their metabolic rate to 1/50th of normal, and heart rates can slow from 1200 beats per minute to as low as 50 beats per minute. In this state of torpidity, breathing becomes irregular, with long periods of no breath at the lowest temperatures. While the broad-tailed population is considered stable, challenges do exist in the form of human structures, domestic and feral cats, natural predators, habitat loss, pol-

lution and climate change.

While nature has equipped the tiny birds with outsized winter survival strategies, the rare hummer is born with a big disadvantage.

A hummingbird which had neither Christie Greene the orange cast of the territorial rufous or the emerald sheen of the common broad-tail made an appearance in Evergreen in July 2019. The dove gray and cream feathers of the hummingbird reflected a pigmentation abnormality similar to albinism. But because the bird had black, rather than pink, eyes, he was in fact “leucistic.” Leucism is defined as a “partial loss of pigmentation in a human or other animal, resulting in white, pale or patchy coloration of the skin, fur or feathers, but not the eyes.” The species of the bird was unknown but was likely a broad-tail or rufous based on the time of year.

due to the increase in visibility to predators.

As hummingbird season nears, before preparing your feeders, consider this: According to “Bird Watcher’s Digest,” naturally occurring flower nectar from native plants and small insects are the mainstays of a healthy hummer diet. Nectar at feeders is an approximation of natural flower nectar, just as fastfood burgers are an approximation

of actual food. We owe it to our hummingbirds to offer the nectar in the proper ratio (4 parts water to 1 part sugar) and to keep our feeders clean.

Even so, what we offer in our feeders is not as good as the “real thing.”

As well, bears will go to great lengths (and heights!) to reach hummingbird feeders, which may lead to unfortunate results.

Instead of setting out feeders, consider planting hummingbird-friendly flowers.

A look at Colorado’s property tax system

I

f we were starting from scratch, we’d never come up with a property tax system remotely like what we have in Colorado.

Through a combination of things that we the people have done through voter approved constitutional amendments and provisions enacted by the legislature, our system has a variety of interconnected things that are littered with unintended consequences and questionable public policy impacts.

Property taxes are determined based upon what the property is worth, what it is used for and where it is located. Counties, schools and special districts depend primarily on property taxes, but the constitutional and statutory provisions that oversee operations are imposed at the state level.

The dysfunction began in 1982 with passage of the Gallagher Amendment, which fixed the percentage of total taxes to be paid by commercial and residential proper-

ties. When Gallagher was adopted, commercial taxes were roughly 28% higher than residential taxes. By 2020, they were more than 405% more.

Passage of TABOR in 1992 further complicated things be limiting governColumnist ments’ revenue and spending. Ironically, the provision in TABOR that allow restrictions to be waived by a vote of the people and how many local governments successfully “de-bruced” resulted in even more confusion.

A couple of significant changes happened more recently. As the difference between taxes on residential and commercial property was about to become even larger, the legislature referred an amendment to repeal the Gallagher Amendment, with the expectation that current tax percentages would remain in

place, to voters in 2020. The repeal was approved. Last year, to undermine a citizen-initiated amendment to reduce property tax revenues, the legislature passed a bill that created more tax categories and lowered rates for 2022 and 2023. Both the reason for and result of the bill was flawed. Introducing legislation to undermine something upon which voters will be asked to weigh in is inappropriate and fuels skepticism.

The 11th hour proposal has led to unintended confusion to an already confusing tax system.

Several initiatives related to property tax are in the process of trying to qualify for the ballot. It is likely that we’ll vote on multiple proposals concerning things people don’t like.

That approach of nibbling around the edges, regardless of the intentions or specific elements of each proposal,is absolutely the wrong way to proceed.

To better prepare for the future and to get a fairer and more logical system, the legislature should ask

voters for a waiver on single subject rules and create a commission with representatives of all parties impacted by property tax. That commission should gather input and provide a comprehensive overhaul for voters’ consideration.

Board elections for the Evergreen Fire Protection District, Evergreen Parks and Recreation District and Evergreen Metro District are scheduled for May 3. Each election is being run independently of the others, which will not help with our usually low voter turnout. Please learn about the candidates for each board and exercise your privilege and responsibility to vote in each election.

Rosenthal: EPRD should construct indoor fields

Evergreen needs a multiuse recreation facility, according to an Evergreen Park & Recreation board member, and he has ideas on how to make it happen.

Board member Don Rosenthal presented preliminary plans for what he calls the MURF at the March 29 board meeting. He suggested the district could construct a 50,000-squarefoot building with an artificial turf practice field, courts, offices, concessions, an elevated running track and outdoor mezzanine.

He proposes to build it north of the ball fields in Buchanan Park because the district already owns the property, and the land is flat and large enough to house the building along with parking.

“This presentation is trying to be proactive about the needs in the district,” Rosenthal said. “It’s a proposal for the public to think about.

This would continue the tradition of improving park and recreation facilities, adding new recreational opportunities and providing a gathering place for the community.”

He noted that the need for indoor courts and a field is apparent because teams can’t practice much of the year because of weather.

His proposal to pay for the building, estimated to cost $26 million, takes a two-pronged approach. In the May 2023 election, EPRD could ask voters to continue a bond approved in 2005 that ends in 2025.

Continuing the bond would raise about $19 million with $13 million of that going to the MURF and $6 million earmarked for other district projects. In addition, EPRD could ask voters for an additional $13 million bond to complete the MURF’s construction costs.

This is the second time a proposal for an indoor facility has come before the EPRD board in two years.

Chris Lewis, who is running for a seat on the board, in 2020 proposed a prefabricated building costing up to $4 million in Buchanan Park. He provided two scenarios: one that

would be 25,000 square feet and the other 40,000 square feet. He proposed funding the plan using other options rather than property taxes.

Board President Monty Estis said once the district’s new executive director was on board, he would form a working group to assess support for a MURF. The proposal Chris Kastelic from Perkins&Will architectural firm told the board that synergy happens when a recreation district has both an indoor MURF and outdoor fields.

“That’s one of the things this site points out — synergy and availability,” he said. “There’s a possibility

for a large facility to find its way onto the site. It represents what you would normally do outdoors in terms of turf fields, but indoors.”

He said outdoor sports are disenfranchised for large parts of the year because of snow, muddy fields, hail and lightning. Indoor facilities have a history of being able to recover expenses, they don’t need a lot of personnel, and the utility needs are minimal.

Board member Peter Lindquist agreed that such a facility was needed, though he cautioned that for voters to agree to the funding, the uses for the money must be spelled out. Lindquist is term-limited and will no longer be on the board in

May. Community members suggested that the district should complete a new strategic plan before embarking on such an expensive endeavor, since the district’s current comprehensive plan is outdated.

“Do we have a formal study? The answer is no,” Rosenthal said. “It’s a legitimate question to ask whether the district has enough population to support this. … I think the need for this is so apparent and there is so much support that we should just do it, and work on the strategic plan for everything else. I would rather accelerate this thing and push it along.”

iPhone follies EVERGREEN — Bargain-browsing in the Big Box one February morning, Siri found the crushing weight of her personal electronics an impediment to the shopping process and placed them in her shopping basket. Subsequently finding the crushing weight of her shopping basket equally onerous, she placed it on the floor and browsed on unencumbered. Returning some minutes later, she found the basket exactly where she left it, but not exactly as she left it. Gone but not forgotten, Siri told JCSO deputies a month later on March 8, were a red iPhone SE and her emergency backup Android device. She’d been able to use an Internet locating app to track the iPhone to an address on Global Drive in Lousiville, Kentucky, which was not much help.

The phone’s serial number proved more useful, though, leading the dogged deputies to an electronics recycling kiosk at a King Soopers in Lakewood, Colorado, where it had been exchanged by for cash on Feb. 26 by Alexa. Confronted by deputies, Alexa at first failed to recall recycling Siri’s smartphone, but eventually admitted to “finding” it at the Evergreen Big Box. Officers cited Alexa for theft.

EVERGREEN — Toyota was traveling eastbound on Interstate 70 on the afternoon of March 12 when Mercedes wove around him in what Toyota deemed a reckless manner.

Toyota fell in behind Mercedes, and continued following him as Mercedes exited onto County Road 65. Mercedes didn’t like having a shadow, and he decided to shake his tail by pulling over to let Toyota by, which also provided a good opportunity for Mercedes to step out of his vehicle, shake his fist at Toyota and bellow a few choice words in passing. Now it was Toyota’s turn to feel the hot breath of pursuit, and when a state trooper passed by going the

other direction, Toyota attempted to perform an emergency U-turn.

Unprepared for the maneuver, Mercedes piled into Toyota’s back bumper, which also provided a good opportunity for Mercedes to step out of his vehicle, pound on Toyota’s windshield and bellow a few death threats. Mercedes told investigating deputies that he was just blowing off a little harmless steam. Multiple witnesses told deputies Mercedes was driving and acting “like a maniac.” Deputies cited Mercedes for harassment and reckless driving.

Out of bounds CONIFER — Bjorn maintains a small, private ski area on his property for the exclusive enjoyment of immediate clan and close compatriots. Espying fresh ski tracks that were left by none of the above, Bjorn followed the offending furrows through the woods to a neighbor’s chalet. The neighbor, Sigurd, told Bjorn that while he hadn’t personally violated Bjorn’s snowy sanctum, he did recall observing a stranger schussing across his own property and suspected the man had been heading for the adjacent proprietary trails. As luck would have it, Dag had made note of the stranger’s license plate number which, on Feb. 23, led JCSO deputies to the door of Dag, who admitted making an unannounced excursion to what he believed to be an “abandoned ski resort,” but said he was pretty sure it was on “forest service land,” or maybe in a “state park.” Officers assured Dag that it was neither, and advised him to ply his boards elsewhere henceforth. No charges were filed.

Although she has only grown an inch and a half physically since her freshman year, Halle Yocom has truly developed and matured as a person and a student during four years at Gilpin County High School (GCHS), rising to the top of the Class of 2022. Yocom is the senior class Valedictorian.

COVID-19 might have thrown her a curve ball as she had to finish her sophomore and entire junior year, including two AP classes, remotely from home. However, her own perseverance along with parent and teacher support and encouragement resulted in her continued academic success.

Halle has been an important member of the cheerleading squad exemplifying school spirit. She has been raising fans to their feet since she was in preschool.

She is also an active member in Student Council, Interact Club, and in the theater department productions. This year Halle stepped out of her comfort zone to venture into the extracurricular sports program. She joined the basketball team as well as participating as a team member in GCHS’s inaugural season for the Girls’ Soccer team.

Even though the content is challenging, Halle said her favorite class is AP Calculus. She enthusiastically

expressed that Mrs. Van Hoose does a great job of teaching. Yocom always feels so satisfied completing and getting the right answer to a calculus problem with calculations that took up half her page.

When asked if she has any advice for underclassmen she said, “Prepare and study for tests prior to the night before the test. There is no way that you will pass if you try to cram a whole unit of things in one night while doing other homework and still taking care of yourself.”

Upon graduation Halle will be furthering her education at the University of Colorado, Boulder by majoring in Integrative Physiology as well as checking things off her bucket list, such as skydiving and focusing on her own growth into adulthood.

Halle did not have any final words because “this is not a forever ending or goodbye.” But, Yocom did say she would like to thank everyone including her family and friends, all of the great teachers at Gilpin County School, and just everyone inside the school for their support from Preschool through grade 12. The entire school staff have been so supportive of me and a great influence each in their own special way. I am Gilpin County School!

What to know about kitten season Spring kicks off the busy season for animal shelters

Along with the spring flowers, something else is growing in the warming months…the number of kittens in shelters.

This time of year, as it’s known by many animal shelters and veterinary offices, is called kitten season.

“Springtime kicks off the busy shelter season for the year,” Intermountain Humane Society programs director Lacy Cook said.

“March brings about the very first part of kitten season.”

According to Cook, who works with kittens first hand, the season can last all the way through October.

On March 8, IMHS welcomed its first litter of kittens for the season.

Mother cat Brie gave birth to three kittens. The whole family is doing a little growing at the shelter before they will be ready for adoption.

The spring is also a busy time for spays and neuters, which can help shelters from getting overwhelmed with kittens in the future. Kittens can be spayed or neutered as early as eight weeks old. The ASPCA outlines many benefits for these procedures, including reducing the risk of cancers in male and female animals.

during this time of year are reliable volunteers, local fosters and monetary donations for kitten food and litter. With the volume of animals in the shelter, Cook says volunteers are very helpful during this time of year.

“We get super inundated during kitten season,” Cook said.

When adopting kittens, Cook says the best way is to adopt in pairs from the same litter. That way, the cats have a built-in playmate. To encourage this, IMHS does “buy one get one half off” for kitten adoption fees.

During this time of year, cats may have litters of kittens outdoors. If you find kittens outside, the ASPCA has a guide on how to approach the situation to cause the least amount of harm and avoid separating the kittens from their mother. Living in Evergreen Hello, my name is Whitney Knause!

My husband Will and I decided to move from Denver to Evergreen in June of 2019, where we were incredibly lucky to have found a beautiful house as well as wonderful neighbors who have become incredible friends.

I ended up moving to Evergreen because Will and I were always in the mountains enjoying nature. We were always fly fishing, camping, snowboarding, or off-roading and Denver was getting to be too busy and too much for us.

So we made an offer on our beautiful home in Wah Keeney, I found an awesome dental assisting job a mile away at LeVos Dentistry, we packed up our Denver home, our pups Zoe and Greta, our two cats Jynx and Dwight and moved our lives to beautiful Evergreen and never looked back.

When we decided to move to Evergreen I had kinda thought I’d be traveling down the hill every day for work, but was incredibly fortunate to find that the same time I was looking to move to the area LeVos Dentistry was hiring, and only 1 mile from our new house.

After being there now for almost three years, I have many things that I enjoy about my job, one of which is getting to know Dr. LeVos and his family. I joke with them that I’m pretty much family now.

I’ve also found that some of my other favorite parts about my job are talking with my patients and hearing about their lives and hearing about if they’re from here or why they moved here. I’ve met so many wonderful people that live here through working with LeVos. Volunteering How did I get involved with doing the Santa mailbox and other community things? Easy, I’m a small town South Dakota farm girl, community is everything.

Long story short, three Thanksgivings ago my parents were in town staying with us. We started talking about how my hometown of Arlington puts the first grade Santa letters in the newspaper, and I got to thinking how cool it would be to get a letter back from Santa and we had replaced our mailbox and the old one was still in our garage.

So literally right then and there, I put painters tape in the form of candy cane stripes and spray painted it. The next day my dad helped me screw it onto a shelf. That year Will and I hand wrote back to all 43 letters we received.

We promptly decided Santa was getting a printer next year, which was incredibly lucky since it was the SEE MY NAME IS, P21

year of COVID, and we received and responded to over 500 letters.

After that, we decided Santa had a printer but needed some mail elves, and so I was lucky to share this excitement and fun with some fellow Evergreeners who helped to write around 350 letters this year.

It truly was magical and fun hearing the cute things they were able to read and the sweet responses sent back.

And to all of you parents who may have wondered what happens to all of your little’s letters, I have kept every letter from all 3 years! Great memories to look back on later in life.

As for getting involved with other community volunteer work, it just kinda happened.

After reading, hearing and seeing the destruction of the Marshall Fires so close to Christmas, I knew I wanted to help somehow.

If you’re anywhere on Facebook or NextDoor and on an Evergreen page you know how obnoxious I post

(especially around the holidays) so I figured with how many people have already seen my presence online, maybe I can post to get some help and love out to the people who were involved with the fire.

And boy did it work; between the first round of everyday things like clothes, blankets, etc. that filled my dining room and garage, to the January Holly Days Event for the kids, my Evergreen community showed up big.

I was only the in-between and the starting voice on that show of volunteering, that was just many amazing people from this community I’ve gotten to know so well, showing their caring and kindness.

Something people might not know about my volunteer work is that it’s not just me, especially the last two years.

Last year and especially this year prior to the holidays and during, I had so many kind and caring people who actually donated money, envelopes, stamps, ink, time writing and even gas and time delivering last minute Santa letters.

It’s kind of become one of my favorite parts of doing the Santa

Something people probably do not know about me is that I am so incredibly accident prone and have been most of my life.

Colorado parks are full and getting fuller How will the state decide who gets in, and who gets hurt?

If anybody could work the system and get access to wildly popular open space this summer, you’d think Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commissioner Taishya Adams would have a good shot.

But there she is, just like everyone else, penciling early March on her planner as the day she can first swing sharp elbows online to get summer group backpacking reservations at Rocky Mountain National Park, not far from her home in Boulder.

“I’ve had it marked in my calendar for six months,” Adams told her fellow commissioners last week. She endorsed a new timed entry proposal for Eldorado Canyon State Park, where overflowing parking lots on weekends back up onto lawns in the little town of Eldorado Springs.

But she added a warning message: Intergenerational families love the big picnic areas at Eldorado and other state parks. They come in more than one car. Managing crowds by managing cars should not shut out diverse uses of state open space.

“I would hate to see that become a barrier,” Adams said.

Up, up and away Everyone agrees Colorado’s open spaces are growing alarmingly crowded on popular days. The numbers are startling.

Visitation at close-in Front Range state parks has doubled or nearly tripled. Sprawling Lake Pueblo had to turn away cars for the first time in 2020, the year it passed 3 million visitors. Jefferson County Open Space does not have gated entry for counting, but believes visitation to its 28 foothills gems passed 7 million last year.

Staunton State Park near Conifer rocketed from 89,000 in 2015 to 277,000 in 2020. Barr Lake in Brighton, a hit with birders and flatland bikers, went from 119,000 in 2015 to 258,000 in 2020, before settling back a bit with indoor

“You do have to be ready to say OK, first come, first served doesn’t work if you have an entrance line that’s a half mile long every day,” said Aaron Weiss, deputy director of the nonprofit Center for Western Priorities, which advocates for expanded public lands and more parks funding. “We have to find a better solution.”

The answer can’t just be forcing everyone to online reservation systems or discouragingly high fees, Weiss and others say. The fix has to include more open land, they argue, including the Biden administration’s executive order seeking to protect 30% of U.S. land and water by 2030.

“Increased use of state and federal lands is a good thing, and the solution isn’t to curtail access, but rather increase it by conserving more land and removing barriers to entry from those who feel excluded or unable to access the outdoors,” said Jackie Ostfeld, director of Sierra Club’s Outdoors for All campaign.

“The threat of overuse poses in these small spots, and it is a legitimate threat, is miniscule compared to the threat posed by development,” Weiss said.

Anecdotal evidence and polling data show the online ticket jockeying and the turned-away cars, from Pueblo to Roxborough, are altering the way Coloradans use — or try to use — the great outdoors.

About 58% of Coloradans said crowding in the last two to three years has changed where and how they recreate, according to this year’s annual State of the Rockies Project poll of Western states by Colorado College and New Bridge Strategy. The average across all eight Western states polled was 48% changing their time and location of outdoor recreation.

Larimer County hiker Suzy Paquette said she understands the need for control experiments like timed entry, but added that the online regimen started at Rocky Mountain National Park last year did change how she and her husband get outdoors.

Even on weekdays in the summer, the national park passes are “gone like lickety split,” she said. “So that’s one of the problems, you can’t just say ‘Oh, let’s go to the park today.’”

It’s not just the human visitors and

residents whose behavior and attitudes are impacted by the outdoors rush, said Dana Bove, a volunteer who helps keep track of eagles and hawks at places like Barr Lake, St. Vrain, Boyd Lake and county parks. He feels he’s lost his own “solace” in the crowded parking lots and packed trails, but worries more about the birds.

“These days, most of my walks on the trails where we live are at dusk or in the evening,” Bove said. He can choose to walk later, but he said, “wildlife is not so fortunate, as they have already moved away or been displaced from the ever increasing human traffic.”

The outdoors are turning into an overcrowded theme park Pueblo is proud that people come from all over to boat on Lake Pueblo, swim at Rock Canyon, or mountain bike on dozens of miles of trails, said Jamie Valdez, who has led mountain bike classes at the state park. Pueblo gets less snow, and the warm winter sunshine attracts recreation from multiple states, he said.

Valdez has his eye now on the city’s Pueblo Mountain Park, with its own hiking trails in the foothills southwest of town sitting as a hidden gem. “It’s a beautiful, beautiful park, and it seems to be almost forgotten,” he said.

The nonprofit Boulder Climbing Community weighed in early on the proposed changes to how Eldorado Canyon is managed, knowing many of its members go dozens of times a year and count on driving, rolling or striding in just a few minutes after class or work.

To their credit, Boulder County and the state have consulted closely with climbers on improving the shuttle to the park and making sure timed car passes aren’t hoarded or sold, said Boulder Climbing Community executive director Kate Beezley. The shuttles have spaces for climbers’ crash pads and other gear.

space are inevitable, Beezley said, so parks managers need to make sure they consider all the user groups and keep things fair.

“Who is the primary user group?

Who are your frequent flyers? And how can you help them maintain those patterns of their health and wellbeing?” she said.

Parks managers flinch when they think of the potential overuse coming to stunningly picturesque, newly minted state parks like Sweetwater Lake in Garfield County, and Fishers Peak near Trinidad. Weiss, of the Center for Western Priorities, uses the word “harden” to describe how open space planners must anticipate the places a frenzied public will park, hike, build fires or camp, and create protections for those natural areas.

Marketing experts also must join in to help spread people out by showcasing alternatives to the closest, most Instagrammed locations, experts say.

Otherwise, Weiss said, the great outdoors becomes “this massive Disneyland problem that you end up with at Zion National Park, or at Chautauqua for that matter. There’s a lot to be said for making sure folks are aware, hey, there are equally great if not better experiences, because it’s less crowded.”

Angel’s Landing at Zion is one of Weiss’ favorite spots. But it’s no fun, he said, “If it looks like the line to ‘Pirates of the Caribbean.’”

Looking for other solutions So what else can be done? Scott Roush, who oversees some of the busiest Colorado state parks close to the Denver metro area, said park users should expect more experiments with timed entry like the one moving forward for Eldorado Canyon this summer.

Highline Lake State Park is a place managers worry about, he said. Parking lots fill fast on weekends at the rare body of water in the high desert near Grand Junction. Without more parking controls, people leave their cars wherever they feel like it, just as at Eldorado Canyon, Roush said.

Jeffco Open Space is adding new parking spaces at Alderfer/Three Sisters Park outside Evergreen, community connections director Matt Robbins said. That may head off “volunteer” parking. Jefferson County also puts stock in educating park users on simple, highly effective tips like staying on the trail even in mud season. Hikers sidestepping mud create

“braiding” that turns single track into 4-foot-wide throughways, Robbins said.

Charging for parking or timed ticketing are tougher, Robbins said, because Jeffco does not have controlled entry at its 28 parks in the way national or state parks do. The county did try an experiment last year partnering with Lyft for $2.50 off rides to and from open space parks. It was a bust, Robbins said.

Federal, state and county cooperation is key to pulling off more successful management techniques, said Dan Gibbs, executive director of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources. Gibbs lives in Breckenridge, where one of the busiest 14,000-foot peaks in the state, Quandary, beckons from the south.

County officials worked with the U.S. Forest Service to implement a reservation system for county-owned lots at Quandary’s base, and a shuttle system for remote parking areas.

“In these high-usage areas, I think that’s going to be the future, whether it’s on state lands or federal lands,” Gibbs said.

Roush said some state parks planners are interested in trying technology aids like Lot Spot, a smartphone app that Jeffco uses to provide real time updates on park crowding and can recommend a nearby alternative.

State parks are much more spread out, though, than county open space, and alternate choices may not be practical.

The public appears to be adapting to shuttle use as a way to control car overcrowding, and park planners have noticed. Eldorado’s shuttle system will run again in 2022. Shuttles to Rocky Mountain National Park’s Bear Lake are now an essential part of park operations. Buses now operate to control entry to Maroon Bells and Hanging Lake. Expect more.

“Do we have an actual numberof-people problem, or do we have a number-of-cars problem? Because there are different solutions there,” Weiss said. “And shuttles are of course part of that.”

Another part could be other public transportation, added Weiss, who lives in Jefferson County. “Here, there are no RTD routes that get you to open spaces. That’s a problem.”

“There’s just an infinite amount of creativity and opportunity for experiment,” he said.

Reservation systems at Arches and Rocky Mountain national parks are closely watched by state and county parks managers, Watkins said. Technology companies can offer ideas on counting parking space use, “frequent flyer” perks, and integrating real-time crowding information on apps that can spread out park visitors.

Open for all Open space fans and park managers worry that new layers of control and costs will widen the already large gap between tourists and outdoors enthusiasts with time and income, and those on tight budgets and less access to technology.

Fees are adding up at every level, Eldorado Canyon hiker Jeff Paquette said.

“So now you have the annual pass for your state, the annual pass for your county, and before you know it, it’s going to be for all open space,” he said.

The Sierra Club is among those fighting for more open space and recreation opportunities closer to cities, Ostfeld said. By Sierra Club’s definition of “nearby,” 100 million Americans lack easy access to open space.

“We must be very careful to ensure that the actions of public land managers don’t perpetuate the status quo, with many communities already feeling unwelcome or unsafe in some of our national and more remote parks and public lands,” Ostfeld said.

Being mindful of everyone’s time and resources is key to designing open space access, Weiss said.

“One thing we’ve learned from all of this is that any sort of time system where a clock turns over and everyone is mashing a button to try to get in, that is not fair and equitable,” he said.

Some space needs to be reserved for lottery or last-minute access for those

whose lives can’t revolve around one reservation window.

Colorado leaders say they are aware of all these pitfalls and will keep working to avoid them. The new $29 state parks pass linked to motor vehicle registration will bring in money to add new parks, experiment with reservations, expand shuttle systems and more, DNR’s Gibbs said.

He said he still prefers to look at access as a good problem to have.

“In the long run,” Gibbs said, “we want people to get outdoors. I mean, this is Colorado.”

The work generally consists of moving a 150 HP dry-pit wastewater pump from position 1 to position 3 and the installation of an Owner supplied 200 HP dry-pit configuration, centrifugal wastewater pump in position 1. The position assists or performs the packaging or palletizing and securing and then the transport of printed material or matter related to printing in the safest, most efficient and professional manner possible. Operates PPC owned vehicles and trucks, must possess CDL license.

Salary: $34/hour Essential Job Functions: • Transports product to customer on schedule.

• Delivers printed material, proofs, bluelines, artwork, inserts, and other materials as required mostly to company to customers but may be any similar delivery required in the performance of what the company does.

• When preparing loads for delivery, verifies count and condition of good loaded and unloaded and records in scale logs.

• When preparing loads for delivery, Reports overages, shortages, and damage to supervisor. Or once delivered if required, reports overages, shortages, and damage to supervisor.

• Unloads or assists in unloading freight as required.

• Properly secures loads.

• Operates company truck, trailer, and car in a safe manner, and follows all traffic laws and requirements.

• Reports any vehicle problems and defects to supervisor.

• Does daily maintenance checks and housecleaning or vehicles (washing).

• Complies with all department of transportation standards and regulations.

• Possesses and maintains a good driving records and current driver licenses.

• Keeps dock areas and truck dock cleaned and organized.

• Assists in hand bindery, pressroom, and front office when called upon.

• Ensures good customer relations by consistency delivering orders on time and action in a courteous and professional manner.

• Works with all co-workers in a professional respectful and cooperative fashion.

• Performs other duties as requested or required.

Competencies/Qualification:

• License and experience as a CDL driver.

• English Language: Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language in order to understand requirements when building loads and in order to obey traffic signs and related.

• Be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and background check • Be able to operate a pallet jack and fork lift Physical Demands:

• The physical demands are typical for a warehouse and tractor trailer long bed truck or company delivery vehicle on the public highway(s) setting. Be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
