The U.S. Board on Geographic Names and a state advisory board have asked Clear Creek County for input in renaming Squaw Pass.

Thus, the county is looking for public input in the process before registering its opinion during an April 4 county commissioners meeting.

The pass is a geographic point within U.S. Forest Service Land along Highway 103. It is near the newly renamed Mestaa’ehehe Mountain.

In November, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland issued an order declaring ‘squaw’ a derogatory term and forming a task force to find replacement names for all federal sites bearing that name.

Thus, a new name for the pass is guaranteed, and locals have been asked what its replacement name should be.

Earle Norvil (Norve) Chew March 2, 1929 - March 6, 2022

Earle Norvil (Norve) Chew died peacefully on March 6, 2022, at his home in Evergreen, Colorado. Norve was born on March 2, 1929, in Olean, NY to Albert Earle and Ellen Olive Norton Chew.

After graduating from Olean High School in 1947, Norve joined the phone company as a lineman. He retired in 1985 as an engineer.

In 1948 he married Barbara Krompart. They had eight children: Deborah Rotman (Sam), Mesa, AZ; Richard Chew (Carol), Allegany, NY; Janet Chew (Andy Dickson), Jamestown, NY; Mark Chew (Elaine), Cincinnati, OH; Michael Chew, Olean, NY; Barbara Brady (Jim), Sanibel Island, FL; Barton Chew, Cold Spring, NY; and Charlotte Chew, Nashville, TN.

July 1, 1933 - March 1, 2022

Norve enjoyed camping with the family, hiking on the hill and mowing at the Camp in Hinsdale and yearly canoe trips to Algonquin with his buddies. He also traveled extensively throughout the US and Europe.

Norve had a lifelong interest in aviation, earning his pilot’s license and owning a plane for several years. His many hobbies were baking bread, making strawberry jam and scrapple among other family favorites.

Preparing breakfast was his specialty, and he also had a talent for finding the best breakfast joints wherever he was in the world. He enjoyed repairing, maintaining, In 1995 he married Anne Ambuske and remodeling the family home on Bishop Wingard.

William “Bill” Bell passed away from a short illness on March 1, 2022. He is survived by his wife, Jackie (Staub) Bell, his brother-in-law, Dave Staub and many loyal friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, Tom Bell.

Bill was born on July 1, 1933 in Park Hills, Kentucky. He attended Wabash College, Harvard University and received his law degree from the University of Cincinnati Law School. He met Jackie in Cincinnati and married in 1970.

Jackie and Bill moved to Aspen to enjoy skiing and then to Evergreen a year later.

He practiced law in Denver and Evergreen for many years. He was an avid handball

and racquetball player and in time he switched to ping pong and enjoyed games at the rec center with friends every week. Bill was a quiet but strong supporter of Jackie and her work with EAPL – helping in many ways to foster and adopt dogs and cats for over 40 years. Bill will be remembered for his solid ethics and values along with his kind, gentle personality.

There will be a celebration of life in the Aspen Room at El Rancho Restaurant in Evergreen on May 7, 2022 at 10:30 am.

According to Jenny Runyon of the USBGN, these names are: Deadman Pass, Corral Pass, Beaver Pass, Vance Pass and Mestaa’ehehe Pass.

She said the Department of Interior could suggest other names as well, but at least those five are under consideration right now. If Clear Creek County has other ideas, it will have to formally suggest them.

“If it’s not on the list, it won’t be considered,” Runyon continued.

The county can support any of the five options or suggest its own by April 4, which is the deadline for the state advisory board. The USBGN’s deadline for public comment is April 24.

The commissioners liked Owl Woman Pass, which is the English name for Mestaa’ehehe, and Blue Sky Pass. However, they wanted to have time for public input and to consult stakeholders on other names that might have cultural and/or historical significance.

“It’s common, or even normal, for the pass to have a name completely different from the surrounding mountains,” Commissioner Sean Wood said. “The process that we did (for Mestaa’ehehe Mountain), part of it that I liked for sure, was getting input from a wide variety of stakeholders.”

date their attackers.

Those were some of the lessons that the West Jefferson Elementary School fourth graders explained during the culmination of a module about animals’ defenses against predators. They presented their findings at a recent exhibition for parents.

Students have spent the past few months researching and writing about the animals, including a creative story that showed how the animals defended themselves against predators. Then the students in Rob Cooper’s and Charity Witherell’s

classes worked together to paint murals depicting their animals without their teachers’ guidance.

The vast amount of work the students put into their papers, presentations and murals was evident, and parents listened intently as their students taught them about animals’ defense strategies.

After the presentations, parents said the module allowed their children to write both factual reports and creative stories, collaborate with others, and work on speaking in public — all important skills that will aid them later in life.

he studied “awesome,” noting that he knew little about the animal until researching it for the project.

He explained that springboks jump about two meters in the air — called pronking — to intimidate predators.

Witherell said the animal-defense module is a yearly experience for students, though the murals were added this year.

Fourth grader Ellie Combs wrote about Olive the ostrich, who was looking for some delicious food when Claire the cheetah began stalking her. Ellie explained that Olive had two choices, hiding or running away, and she asked the audience to choose which would be a better strategy. Based on the audience’s response, Olive ran and Claire gave chase, but Olive had

more endurance, so she could run a longer distance.

Fourth grader Sawyer Jensen wrote about Tyreek the springbok, who was happily drinking water from a lake when Bo the cheetah came by, hoping for a tasty meal.

Tyreek started jumping “like a bunny,” so Bo gave up and left to find other food.

Witherell told parents about the writing portion of the module: “They were very creative, using a lot of descriptive language. Each student is sharing from the author’s chair (to read from their work). It means so much to them and to us as well that you came here for the presentations.”

Protection racket CONIFER — The email that popped up in her queue on Feb. 21 was unwelcome as it was unexpected. Ostensibly sent by the good people at McAfee, it matter-of-factly stated that her virus protection subscription was about to expire, which was bad, and was being automatically renewed, which was good.

Trouble was, she did not, and had never, subscribed to McAfee, and the fictitious subscription was to be extended by way of with an electronic withdrawal of $189.99 from her personal bank account. She didn’t approve of that proposal, and said as much in her emailed reply, which prompted a telephone call from an ostensible McAfee agent who rather ungently informed her that she had no choice in the matter. If she wanted her $189.99 back, he sneered, she’d need to fill out a refund application, which he subsequently sent, except the refund application was really a savings account withdrawal authorization to the tune of $1,899.99, and the moment she finished downloading it, her computer froze solid. Feeling over-matched,

she called her bank to confirm that no actual funds had as yet changed hands, and then called JCSO to find out if they could liberate her lockedup laptop. Deputies could do little but advise her to assume that her computer remained dangerously corrupted and get it into the hands of a competent cyber specialist, stat.

Hotel parking EVERGREEN — At about 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 21, JCSO dispatchers were informed that a man wearing “dark clothes and a beanie” was trying to break into a Chevy Suburban that had been left overnight in a church parking lot. Responding deputies quickly found the vehicle, which appeared undisturbed, and the suspect, who appeared unperturbed.

The soul of cooperation, Beanie, explained that he sometimes like to escape his home in Commerce City and enjoy the “fresh air” at 7,500 feet. On this occasion, he continued, he’d pulled into the church parking lot intending to bed down in his car until dawn, and any interest he may or may not have had in the Suburban was merely innocent curios-

ity. As it happened, the guy who called JCSO had been spending the night in a different vehicle parked in the church parking lot, and had developed the definite impression that Beanie’s behavior bordered on banditry. In the end, officers busted Beanie for second degree motor vehicle trespass and warned him against car-camping on private property.

Temp-er tantrum EVERGREEN — By midnight on Feb. 21, the temporary worker was becoming a persistent problem.

She’d shown up for her pick-up shift visibly tipsy, and her job performance had gone downhill from there. By 11:30 it had become clear to her manager that she’d become “too much of a liability” to remain on the clock, or even in the store, and he’d tactfully relieved her of duty and ushered her out onto the sidewalk with the admonishment that she leave the property and never return. Instead of going quietly into that good night, however, she lit a cigarette and got so “loud” the manager felt compelled to dial 911.

By the time deputies arrived a small crowd of former-fellow employees had gathered to catch her act, a dramatic multisensory experience featuring slurred and incoherent speech, half-closed bloodshot eyes, and choking cloud of alcohol fumes that clung to her like a blue polyester vest. “I didn’t drink nothing today!” she told deputies. Then you won’t mind taking a quick breathalyzer test, officers rejoined. “I’m-a be 100 with you,” she said, confidentially. “I did drink a little bit this afternoon.” After thanking her for enlightening them, deputies cited her for disorderly conduct and third degree trespassing, and then took her to jail for being in violation of a protection order they discovered in her profile that forbade her to drink fortified beverages.

Residents stress need for free-standing library in Conifer JCPL facilities master plan doesn’t include new location along 285 corridor

Conifer residents still want a freestanding library, and they reminded the Jefferson County Public Library board of that fact on March 17.

Members of the Conifer Area Council, a Conifer library book group and the Aspen Park Improvement Association, along with library users, expressed the need for a separate library rather than the one housed in Conifer High School.

Difficult access to the high school and the curtailed hours to use the library were among their chief concerns.

The residents spoke during public comment at the library board meeting before board members began discussing the first draft of a new library facilities master plan, which is updating a plan generated in 2018.

The 2018 plan, according to Suzy Nelson, who represented the CAC, recommended the library board explore opportunities to move the Conifer library into its own building. That recommendation isn’t in the draft 2022 plan.

The 2022 plan puts Conifer library in a needs-based category with the Golden and Wheat Ridge libraries. Later in the meeting, the consultants said they didn’t have any

projects planned for the libraries in this category.

The 9,000-square-foot Conifer library has been housed at Conifer High School since the school opened in 1996 and is shared with high school students and staff. In

contrast, the 17,000-square-foot Evergreen library, which was built in 1993, will be upgraded soon.

the majority saying it could provide longer and more convenient hours, easier access than the steps leading to the high school, and better parking. Currently, the Conifer library is open to the public after school and on weekends.

That will likely move to 4 p.m. in fall 2023 when Jeffco Public Schools changes school start and end times.

Speakers also said Conifer residents, who pay taxes to the library district, aren’t getting their fair share of services compared with the amount they pay.

The Conifer library became more accessible when the library put in a dropbox in the roundabout in front of the school and added lockers where people can pick up materials at the Mountain Resource Center.

Speakers said it would be nice to have library programs for children in the mornings, and it wasn’t fair for residents to have to drive to Evergreen or down the hill to access library services on weekdays.

“Saying the Evergreen library serves Conifer is misleading,” Nelson said. “The library’s mission statement is about providing equal access to library services across the county. Size (of the library) isn’t the issue; access is the issue.”

Facilities study The library district uses a countywide space-planning target of 0.5 to 0.6 square feet of branch library space per person living in the area.

The county has been divided into

three zones — north, middle and south — and the plan looks at the most cost-effective way to get to the square-footage target.

Jill Eyres with Group 4, the consultant that created both the 2018 and 2022 facility plans, said the report recommends broad projects rather than small community projects to get to the 0.5 square-foot target, noting that people are used to driving to get services they want and need, including libraries.

“The biggest opportunities to reach 0.5 by 2030 are concentrated in three projects: the new South County library, expanded service in Lakewood and a new destination library in Arvada,” Eyres said.

The South County library is expected to be about 40,000 square feet and located in the southern part of the county. A site has not been identified.

A couple board members suggested that the zones used to look at facilities should include a fourth zone: the foothills. Another board member wanted to look at maps of library square footages compared with area populations.

“It’s hard to understand how different population groups are impacted,” board member Charles “Chic” Naumer said. “That would help us understand Conifer better.”

He pointed to travel times being different for Conifer residents compared with those living down the hill.

Donna Walker, the library district’s executive director, said district officials haven’t discussed what type of free-standing library could be put in Conifer.

To the women who helped create the life we enjoy today

M

arch is Women’s History Month, and I’d like to give a shout-out to all the women in Evergreen, past and present, who have made this community what it is today. I was Columnist inspired by the Canyon Courier’s recent feature on Louise Mounsey, a remarkable woman, but one of many who have given time, talent and money to foster the exceptional quality of life we enjoy.

The thing that brought most of us here, and makes the mountain area so special, is its natural beauty.

Preserving it has been the focus of numerous organizations over the years, all of them with strong women leaders. The oldest still in existence is Evergreen Audubon, founded in 1968. A few years later, Jefferson County Open Space was established through the efforts of the League of Women Voters. About the same time, groups of women

organized to save the Hiwan Homestead and the adjacent Heritage Grove from destruction.

PLEASE (Planned Living Environment of South Evergreen) and ENABLE (Evergreen North Area Balanced Land-use Effort) emerged in the early 80’s as growth gained momentum. Guided by the Evergreen Area Community Plan, which was written by a diverse group of locals and adopted by the County Commissioners in 1986, these women-led groups advocated for development that would preserve the area’s unique character.

The non-profit Mountain Area Land Trust celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, having protected nearly 25,000 acres, primarily through private conservation easements. Its staff is predominantly women, and its path has been guided over the years by many women of vision.

Yes, we care about the natural environment, but we care about people every bit as much. No matter the need, some woman and her friends worked to fill it. Mount Evans Hospice was founded by and is staffed primarily by women. The

same is true of the Evergreen Animal Protective League. All our faith communities and non-profits such as Evergreen Christian Outreach, Drive Smart, Seniors Resource Center, Bootstraps and the Mountain Resource Center are dependent on women for the work they do.

Another of our defining features is the multitude of arts organizations. The Evergreen Artists Association, the Evergreen Players, the Evergreen Chamber Orchestra, Center for the Arts Evergreen and Ovation West, which grew from the Evergreen Chorale, have enriched our lives for decades. Frank Plaut, longtime arts activist, tells me that none of these organizations would survive without women and their contributions of talent, energy and ideas.

Many women business owners and realtors have given generously to all facets of community life, at the same time they helped build a vibrant business sector.

Evergreen also has a long history of women in the public sector, starting with the establishment of its first public library in 1917. Over the years, many women have served

with distinction on the School Board and the Evergreen Park and Recreation District board. More recently, we have seen women elected to represent us in the Legislature and on the Board of County Commissioners.

By calling attention to the contributions of women to our community, I do not mean to downplay the role of men. Many have also given selflessly, often while working long hours down the hill.

When I began writing, I intended to name names, but decided there are just too many for a column of this nature. If you’re curious about the particular people involved, I encourage you to check out the excellent website justaroundhere.com, which has profiles of many of the women—and men—who have made our community such a great place to call home.

Linda Rockwell moved to Evergreen with her family in 1982. She got involved in local land-use issues in 1984 and in the Democratic Party a few years later. She served as chair of the Jeffco Democrats from 1993 to 1997.

Good government and principled politics remain her passion.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Evergreen’s not-so-healthy-future via overpopulation There is a quote: “We must prevent human tragedy rather than run around trying to save ourselves after an event has already occurred. Unfortunately, history clearly shows that we arrive at catastrophe by failing to meet the situation, by failing to act when we should have acted. The opportunity passes us by, and the next disaster is always more difficult and compounded than the last one.”

Evergreen citizens may want to be educated as to how endless construction impacts their lives: exponential growth, much like a cancer cell, always ends in collapse of the host. It ensures that water, energy and resources will become exhausted at some point. Unending growth degrades our environment and accelerates catastrophic climate destabilization.

Human population creeps into Evergreen and explodes across the Front Range 24/7 with no end in sight. Asphalt, steel and glass replace farmland and animal habitat. Air pollution grows more visible and toxic with every car and smokestack added. Every citizen of Evergreen breathes some of that Brown Cloud with each breath 24 hours a day. Have you experienced the insanity of I-70 to go camping or skiing on weekends?

The U.S. Census Bureau shows it’s going to become much worse as Colo-

rado’s population projections jump from 5.7 million in 2021 to 8.7 million by 2050.

How will that benefit you? Will it improve traffic gridlock? Will it clean up the air? Will it make driving into the mountains a wonderful weekend experience?

How about becoming the first city in America to create an “Evergreen Carrying Capacity Policy…Evergreen Population Stabilization Policy…?”

As a six-continent world bicycle traveler, I’ve seen what happened to cities around the world that continued on Evergreen’s current path.

The worst aspect about Mexico City, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Mumbai and the rest is: they can’t fix themselves.

Therefore, can we use our wisdom, our smarts and rational thinking processes to stop “growing” Evergreen and all other Colorado cities?Because if we don’t, do you want to be living the same miseries of all other overpopulated areas of the world?

Wouldn’t you like a reasonable new path toward a viable future that sustains all of us, the environment and the animals.

Who is to blame for inflation?

hen bad things happen, we try to find a reason and someone to blame. I think it has always been this way, but now we have the media who know that reporting bad news sells, and Columnist naming the person or persons who caused the bad news sells even better. Add that the cable news channels have to provide programming 24 hours each day, so they devote many hours to the blame game.

It’s impossible to not notice that the price of just about everything is rising. We know it as inflation, but we last experienced inflation like this in the eighties. During the fiveyear periods between 2007 to 2011 and 2017 to 2021 the average annual inflation was 2.4%. The five years between 2012 and 2016 were even lower at 1.3%. Last month, the cost of goods increase was 7.9%.

There are generally two causes

of inflation. One is called demandpull inflation, the upward pressure on prices that follows a shortage in supply. Economists describe this as “too many dollars chasing too few goods.” The other is Cost-push inflation. It occurs when prices rise due to increases in the cost of wages and raw materials.The bad news is that we have both conditions.

Let’s first discuss the demandpull inflation. Simply, the pandemic caused us to experience dramatic shortages of goods and services.

For instance, semiconductors made overseas have not been available so cars can’t be produced. The shortage, of course, has driven up the price. As we hung out in our homes during the pandemic, we decided to upgrade either by buying a new home or by remodeling our current one. New house sales have increased housing prices as have home improvement projects. Food prices are strongly affected by the cost of the logistics involved in their distribution. As the distribution channels were affected by the pandemic, costs have risen.

Beginning in the late seventies,

American manufacturers began to practice just in time delivery of raw materials. Instead of warehousing needed materials, companies scheduled them to arrive just when they are needed in the manufacturing process. It’s efficient and its good business… except when it doesn’t work. Vital cogs in the supplier chain have experienced delays as companies shut down during the pandemic.

There is blame to bring to the feet of the Federal Reserve. For many years the Fed has kept interest rates near zero. This penalizes savers and rewards spenders. It’s likely this will soon change. Also contributing to the inflation is the excessive spending of our government. No one doubts that it was right to offer cash to help during the pandemic while many businesses were closed.

However, the spending is continuing. Remember our definition…. Too many dollars chasing too few goods.

We definitely have both conditions.

I’m sure you hear that America’s front-line workers are not doing well in our economy. Here’s proof. In 1973 the real hourly earnings of produc-

tion and non-supervisory employees was $23.24. In March of 2019 it was exactly the same…. No progress for workers in over 40 years. The same measure in January of this year is $26.86…up 15.6%. This is happening because the worker shortage is driving up wages. Given that there is a labor element in most products, these labor increases will continue to drive inflation. So, we have cost driven inflation factors as well as demand pull.

The summary leads me to believe that this inflation is caused by many factors which are coming together… a perfect storm. The future interest rate increases will help, but higher prices are probably here to stay.

Change may be on the way for daylight saving time

realize that I’m probably in the minority, likely a minuscule minority, but I don’t think it’s a big deal to change our clocks twice a year to go into and come out of daylight savings time. I like that going back Columnist to standard time in the fall makes sure that it is light when most work and school days start during the winter.

There is momentum in both Congress and the Colorado legislature to shift to year-round daylight savings time, and it looks possible, if not

likely, that the change is on the way.

A lot of things have changed since daylight savings time was first widely adopted in the United States over 100 years ago. One of the arguments to shift clocks forward in the spring was to save energy. When it stayed light one hour later, people didn’t need to turn on lights as early each night. That argument has become obsolete as the things that consume much of our energy use now, such as central heat and air, home appliances, televisions, and computers, didn’t exist when daylight saving time started and when they are used doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with if it is light or dark outside.

Most of the arguments against changing back and forth between standard and daylight savings times

have to do with the impacts of one less hour of sleep when we spring forward. There are studies that suggest that the hour of sleep that is lost as we make the transition each spring leads to depression, increased traffic accidents and work injuries and a decrease in productivity in the first several days as we adjust our sleep schedules each year.

According to Sunrise-Sunset. org, if we had been on year-round daylight savings time while we were on standard time in the 2021-2022 season, the sun would not have come up before 8 a.m. in Colorado from Dec. 1 to Feb. 7. If we make the shift to permanent daylight savings time, it will be necessary for us to identify and address unintended consequences of most people’s days

beginning in the dark for more than two months each year.

If the last two years of living through a worldwide pandemic have shown us anything, it is that people are remarkably resilient. We can and do adjust to a wide variety of changes regularly. For the people like me, who support changing our clocks twice each year, the transition to year-round daylight savings time is one more thing we’ll learn to live with.

Pooch looking for votes in contest

A Conifer woman believes she has a special dog, and she hopes you will think so, too.

Lydia Niederwerfer has entered her English cocker spaniel, Sir Tank, also known as Wyatt or Pork Chop, in the America’s Favorite Pet contest.

In addition to bragging rights of having the country’s favorite pooch, the winner, who will be named on April 7, gets a $5,000 prize and is featured in Dogster magazine. The contest is a fundraiser for the PAWS Foundation, which helps cats, dogs and wild animals by helping fund shelters, rehabilitation of orphaned and injured wildlife, and community outreach.

Niederwerfer, 58, says she wants to win for two reasons: She wants to give credit to breeder Nancy Praiswater with Star-Vue English cocker spaniels in Monument for breeding such amazing pups. She wants to split the prize money between paying her remaining medical bills from the complications of Lyme disease and helping a friend’s parents who live in Ukraine.

Niederwerfer has two English cocker spaniels, Sassy Pants, 7, and Wyatt, 5, both from the same breeder. She chose to put Wyatt into the contest because he’s a ham — loving to have his photo taken — while

Sassy Pants is more reserved.

“These dogs aren’t just pretty faces,” she said.

Niederwerfer said she couldn’t have gotten through her medical issues without the dogs, who kept her going and provided comfort when she felt ill. While they haven’t been trained, they are just like therapy dogs, alerting her when something is physically wrong and staying by her side.

“If they are acting strange, I limit my activities,” she explained.

“They act in different ways when they know something major is going to happen to me.”

Plus both dogs are championship nosework dogs, meaning they can track by scent.

Friends have posted Niederwerfer’s campaign to get Wyatt to be America’s Favorite Pet on social media.

Wheat Ridge calls for public art entries City to commission works of art to enhance Improve Wadsworth STAFF REPORT

The City of Wheat Ridge and the Wheat Ridge Cultural Commission are looking for artists or teams to create site-specific work that will help make the Wadsworth Improvement Project a richer experience for all who pass through.

A total of $475,000 is available for art that will be installed in multiple locations along the Wadsworth corridor from I-70 to 35th Avenue in Wheat Ridge.

Entries from qualified artists throughout the U.S. will be accepted, but preference will be given to artists who reside in Colorado or

neighboring states. The deadline for entries is April 1, 2022. All entries must be submitted online at callforentry.org. Artists or artist teams must have the skills and experience commensurate with the responsibility of successfully completing a public art installation. The artwork should be complementary to the streetscape designs and make connections to the site and community.

As part of the entry process, artists will be required to submit up to 8 digital images of previously completed artworks, a resumé detailing professional accomplishments and a statement of interest outlining the artist’s interest in this specific project.

Artists also will have to respond to questions about their experience and which location (in the project) they are submitting for.

“Public art enhances the quality of life in Wheat Ridge and benefits its citizens and the community atlarge,” according to the statement.

Public art acquisition and selection is coordinated through the city’s Cultural Commission.

Advocates want ‘magic’ mushroom therapy legalized Treating mental health is reason cited

Substances relegated to the underground for the last 50 years are finding their way back to the surface for many people choosing alternative ways of treating mental illness.

“I think we’re seeing a psychedelic boom and a renaissance, some people would call it. When you look at the research that’s coming out of Hopkins, NYU, and UCLA, the results are pretty astounding,” said Dr. Jennifer Tippett, a licensed clinical psychologist and the director of the substance use disorder specialty at the graduate school of professional psychology at the University of Denver.

Tippett is referring to recent studies on various psychedelics, including psilocybin, a compound in “magic” mushrooms that have been found to relieve symptoms of anxiety, depression and addiction. She’s just one person in a growing group of therapists nationwide that wants to legally offer psilocybin therapy to their patients.

“Quite simply, because what we’re doing doesn’t work, you just have to look at the numbers, especially when you talk about substance use.

If you look at the literature, the relapse rate or the rate at which people go back to using is really high, even after intensive treatment.

And it’s just that what we’re doing doesn’t work anymore,” Tippett said.

Tippett said not being able to use substances that have faired well in recent studies is frustrating: “It makes me sad, honestly, that a lot of the folks who could really benefit from these medicines aren’t able to access them.”

Some therapists, including Tippett, want to go a step further than Denver’s 2019 decriminalization of psilocybin and legalize it for therapy and medicinal use through ballot initiatives recently approved by the Colorado Secretary of State.

They will need more than 120,000 signatures to get their initiative on the November ballot.

“They’re ancient medicines,” says Matthew Duffy, co-founder of the Society for Psychedelic Outreach, Reform and Education, or SPORE. “Prohibition has only been for 50 years, so we think that psychedelics’ presence in society is a new emergent thing but it’s actually folk medicine; mushrooms, ayahuasca, peyote, and not even just those substances that are more known,

but the herbs and plants and fungi that are all around us and have supported us for the longest time.”

The Department of Regulatory Agencies, or DORA, would regulate therapeutic use in Colorado if “magic” mushrooms are legalized.

But some advocates in the psychedelic community wonder if too much oversight would work against the communities who’ve been using these substances for so long.

“Legalization basically means commodification. Healers who are largely Indigenous folks, there’s not a lot of excitement from them for this work to be coopted by the medical therapeutic industrial complex.

and power to actually use a healing structure in the community is actually vested in the community,” Duffy said.

Courtney Mathis, also from SPORE, says there needs to be a racial justice component added to this conversation that goes beyond legalization, therapeutic use and regulation of psychedelics.

“Psychedelic justice is not our name and we can’t claim it, but it’s the idea that equity and racial justice are at the center of the psychedelic movement and that decisions around policy and use and access should absolutely be curated, stewarded and determined by people of color,” Mathis explained.

Tickets loom for mountain toll violators State to begin citing drivers who illegally use I-70 mountain express toll lanes

Motorists who drive in the Interstate 70 mountain express toll lanes in Clear Creek County when they are closed and supposed to be serving as the emergency shoulder will face a $250 fine starting in August.

Gov. Jared Polis on March 15 signed House Bill 1074 into law letting the Colorado Department of Transportation use the license plate cameras used to collect tolls when the I-70 mountain express lanes are open to also ticket motorists driving in the lane when it is closed.

There are now express toll lanes across Colorado, but unlike the others, the ones on I-70 through Clear Creek County cannot be open all of the time. That’s because the mountain express lanes are narrower than a traditional interstate lane.

The 13-mile lane from Empire to Idaho Springs opened in 2015 and a westbound express toll lane opened along the same stretch last year.

In 2020, nearly 50,000 motorists drove in the eastbound I-70 express toll lane when it was closed, according to state data.

The cameras will also be used to ticket drivers in the toll lanes towing trailers or who are behind the wheel of a tractor trailer. Both types

of vehicles are prohibited from traveling in the narrow express lanes.

Offenders will be mailed a ticket just as they are when they are caught running a red-light camera in downtown Denver.

Authorities have been unable to enforce the toll lanes’ closure because the lanes are too narrow to allow an officer to wait and catch scofflaws.

The express lanes are narrower because CDOT opted to use the existing width of the roadway to create toll lanes instead of widening the interstate, which would have been more costly and had more

environmental impacts.

Because the lanes are so narrow, Colorado had to make a deal with federal regulators limiting the amount of time they can be open each year. The eastbound express lane can be open a maximum of 100 days a year for no more than 1,168 hours annually. The westbound express lane can be open for no more than 125 days a year and no more than 965 hours annually.

CDOT opens the lanes during peak traffic periods, and the toll changes based on demand.

CDOT says the eastbound express lane has been a success at reduc-

ing drive times on the busy stretch, but people illegally traveling in it, officials say, poses a big risk of a serious crash.
