Evergreen’s New Year’s weekend activities will look a bit different this year — and ice isn’t a requirement.

Skate the Lake on New Year’s Eve will be from 3-8 p.m. with a laser light show as its grand finale, while the Evergreen New Year’s Day Plunge will be at noon at Buchanan ponds.

Skate the Lake details The 24th Skate the Lake continues to be an alcohol-free winter family festival with games and activities for all ages, according to Pam Lindquist, who is coordinating the event for the Evergreen Park & Recreation District.

“We want families to enjoy what we have to offer: the lake, the park, everything,” Lindquist said.

In addition to games, there will be a heated tent where family movies will be shown, fire pits for marshmallow roasting, hot cider and coffee from the Muddy Buck, the Campfire Evergreen food truck and broomball demonstrations.

“We are painting a picture of what a hometown small town does on New Year’s Eve,” Lindquist said.

Mary Margaret (Calabrese) Nelson April 1, 1943 - November 26, 2021

Mary Margaret Calabrese Nelson born April 1, 1943 passed away peacefully in Denver, CO on November 26, 2021. She was born in Shakopee, MN to Joan R. and Carl J. Calabrese. Mary obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Saint Teresa in Winona, MN and went on to earn a Master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from Antioch University. She married George Theodore Nelson in 1969 and lived in Redondo Beach, CA before finding their forever home in Evergreen, CO. After staying home to raise 3 daughters, Mary discovered her passion for working with children and families as a Clinical Social Worker for Synthesis Child Placement Agency, Adoption Alliance and most recently Bridgeway Homes and Education Center for Pregnant Teens. Through her work, Mary touched many lives and developed lifelong,

meaningful relationships. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, George Nelson, and is survived by her daughters, Kristin Nelson-Steinhoff (Jeff), Jennifer (George) Mosier and Lisa (Jeff) Pfeifer; Grandchildren, Hunter, Harrison, Max, George, Samuel, Mackinley, Ryder, Amelia and Rui; Siblings, John (Cathy) Calabrese, Tony (Sharanne) Calabrese, Therese (Joseph) Binder and Christine (Mark) Ayotte; loving friend of 28 years, Charles Murrin; and numerous nieces and nephews she held very dear. Mary’s greatest wish was for everyone to treat one another with kindness, love and respect.

A laser light show by Lightsmith Inc. will replace the traditional fireworks because it’s been too dry, Lindquist said, noting that attendees are in for a treat because of the high quality of the Las Vegas-based company.

“This is the first laser light show ever, and I don’t think it will be the last,” she said.

The plunge details Jump into the Buchanan Ponds on Jan. 1, ice or no ice on the pond, and it will be its usual wildly popular frigid fun, according to John DuRussel, president of Active4All, EPRD’s foundation.

If there’s no ice by New Year’s Day, participants will jump into the water from a dock, plus this year’s plunge will have a costume contest to encourage even more outrageous, interesting costumes. Prizes will be awarded for

first, second and third place.

Proceeds from the event go to EPRD’s INSPIRE program for the special needs population, plus Active4All helps pay fees for families who can’t afford to use the rec district’s facilities.

The plunge, an Evergreen New Year’s Day staple since 2009, moved from Evergreen Lake to Buchanan in 2019, and organizers decided to keep it at its new location.

Registration is $35 per person at the a4aevergreen.org website, and onsite registration will be available this year.

DuRussel has taken the plunge several times, and he encourages everyone to start 2022 by participating in the event. The nice thing about moving the plunge to Buchanan Ponds, DuRussel said, is participants have access to the — warm — locker rooms and showers, plus there’s plenty of parking.

tions from 200 varieties — from simple chocolate chip to beautifully decorated sugar cookies to orange sandwich cookies, walnut butter balls and much more. There were also jams, breads, candy and other goodies.

Cookie Walk organizer Nancy Weeks figured about 100 bakers donated 10 dozen of each cookie, some making more than one kind. That’s a lot of cookies in one room at one time.

“This is just a fun event,” said Julia Winka of Conifer, who helped start the Cookie Walk in 2004 and has volunteered nearly every year since.

“It’s great for community building.

It’s also great because it gets more parishioners involved.”

Winka said in addition to the event being a local favorite, people come from as far as Castle Rock to select and purchase cookies, and others stop by as they’re on their way to cut Christmas trees.

The concept is simple: Customers walk around the tables — hence the name Cookie Walk — and decide which cookies they want. Volunteers wearing holiday aprons, gloves and masks stand behind the tables and place cookies in bags and containers.

Each platter of cookies has a list of ingredients. There’s Christmas music playing in the background, and the coffee is free. Attendees select as many as they want of each cookie, and the cookie selections are weighed. The price is $10 per pound.

The Cookie Walk is a fundraiser for the church, and this year the money is going to the church’s youth group trip to World Youth Day in Portugal, according to the Rev. Tim Gaines, the church’s pastor. Gaines, wearing a red sweater, helped fill bags for cookie customers.

Attendees have a variety of uses for the cookies they select, calling the Cookie Walk a yearly tradition.

While Lori McInnes of Indian Hills plans to create plates of cookies as gifts for her neighbors, Angie Wachendorf purchased cookies to provide holiday treats to her five children and her grandchildren who are coming home for the holidays.

Nancy Parks, of Bailey, said she missed attending last year’s Cookie Walk since it was canceled due to the pandemic, and she was happily filling two containers with cookies.

She said she has trouble baking at high altitude, plus she’s going to a party where she’s supposed to bring dessert, so the Cookie Walk was the perfect opportunity to get sweet treats for the holidays.

Zachary Collins, a member of the church youth group, also is a baker, and he made two kinds of cookies for the Cookie Walk, plus he also distributed cookies to attendees. Zachary likes to bake, and he’s been donating his cookies to the event for three years.

Attendees were enthusiastic and happy about their cookie experiences.

As one attendee put it, “These (cookies) might not make it home.”

A volunteer responded: “That’s OK. Tis the season.”

Bailey resident teaches how to adjust recipes for successful baking

If your cakes fall and your cookies are hard when you bake at high altitude, you’re not alone.

In Bailey, Kathy Mastroianni has been teaching people how to adjust recipes for successful baking in the mountains for about eight years.

She asked the Canyon Courier not to divulge her secrets.

Mastroianni has been baking at high altitude for 28 years. When she first moved to Colorado years ago, she faced the harsh reality of not knowing how to bake at altitude.

An astrophysicist friend in the area taught her the science behind her baking woes, like how less air pressure puts less force on your baked goods, causing them to rise and expand more quickly. Mastroianni knew she needed to spread the knowledge with others, and she decided there was a need for lessons in baking at high altitude.

Her classes are all inclusive, with participants learning to adjust recipes for high altitude, learning tricks about different ingredients and how they react to altitude, and even getting to make a recipe with Mastroianni in her home that sits at 8,700 feet.

Mastroianni says people come to her discouraged that their recipes are not coming out like they remember them.

“I did a class at the Catholic church with these old ladies — I’m talking 70s, 80s, and they had their grandmas’ recipes,” she said.

At that class, she said she had a 100% success rate at adjusting those recipes for a tasty revival of family traditions.

At her holiday high altitude baking class on Dec. 4 at her home in Bailey, Mastroianni held a hybrid class, welcoming virtual and inperson participants.

Once the cookies are done, Mastroianni pulls one apart to show the finished texture of the treat.

Jennifer Snyder, who has lived in Bailey for 1.5 years, was excited to be able to make her family recipes again.

“My mom was a gourmet cook. I have a lot of old family recipes,” she said.

One participant, who joined from Zoom, was not even in Colorado.

Donna Mosher is currently living in North Carolina but has plans to move to Pagosa Springs soon.

Mosher is trying to get ahead of the move, so she can continue to successfully bake once she gets to a higher altitude. She has tried bak-

ing at higher altitudes before but struggled.

“It was tasty, but it just didn’t come out like it was supposed to,” Mosher said.

During the baking part of the class, Mastroianni talks the participants through adjusting ingredients and encourages them to use their senses to judge if things are coming out right. She says you can use almost all of your senses while baking.

The recipe for Saturday’s class was eggnog cookies. After making the necessary adjustments, class members used their sense of smell to decide when the treats were done baking. Often, baking times can be different due to altitude.

Everyone in the class agreed that the cookies turned out great, and they were impressed at the adjustments they made to the recipe to achieve the perfect treat.

SHERIFF’S CALLS Shuttle scuttled CONIFER – It was after midnight on Nov. 10 when Jan called 911 saying that her sister, Marcia, had assaulted her. According to Jan’s cocktail-fueled complaint, she was visiting with Marcia from out of state, and after Marcia retired for the evening she’d gone into the kitchen to call home. “I must have been talking too loud,” Jan said, because Marcia had suddenly stormed in, beat her about the head and shoulders, and “pushed me on the floor.” Concluding that their reunion was effectively concluded, Jan had declared her intention to whistle up an Uber and bolt, only Marcia “wouldn’t let me leave.” Allowed time for rebuttal, Marcia told deputies that she and her husband had been peacefully abed when Jan blundered into the room demanding to be driven to DIA without a moment’s delay. Marcia and her husband understandably declined, telling Jan they’d take her anywhere she wanted to go in the light of morning. That didn’t fly with Jan, who moved to “hit” Marcia, but instead toppled over, dragging Marcia to the ground with her. Since Marcia’s account was independently and amply corroborated by her husband, and since Jan’s tale radically evolved throughout multiple re-tellings, officers discounted Jan’s assault beef and informed Marcia that she had a solid harassment case against Jan if she wanted to press it. Marcia didn’t, merely asking that deputies transport Jan to a comfortably distant hotel without a moment’s delay.

Spite of way INDIAN HILLS – Believing that Landlord wasn’t properly maintaining his rental property, Tenant declared a rent strike. Believing he was under no obligation to let Tenant occupy his property for free, Landlord considered himself the injured party and may or may not have told Tenant that “pretty soon you won’t be able to get up (to the residence).” Either way, on Nov. 18 Tenant called JCSO to report that Landlord had blocked her only access with his pickup truck, essentially trapping her on the grounds.

In his own defense, Landlord told responding deputies that he’d given Tenant ample warning that he’d be performing “work on the driveway,”

and he further assured them he’d left “plenty of room” for her to drive around his vehicle. Sizing up Landlord’s pickup parked diagonally across the drive, deputies deemed the remaining room considerably short of plenty and cited Landlord for second degree criminal tampering.

Picture this EVERGREEN – Asking that Realtor provide a snapshot of the property, the financial institution specified that she was “not to exit the vehicle when taking the photograph of the residence.” Not sure why she wasn’t supposed to get out of her car, Realtor nevertheless heeded the prohibition and, on the morning of Nov. 15, pulled up on the street in front of the house and began taking pictures through the front passenger side window, which is when the admonishment suddenly started making sense. Seemingly out of nowhere, Homeowner appeared at the open window demanding Realtor’s camera and, according to Realtor, even reaching inside that car and trying to snatch it from her hands. Fleeing the scene with her snaps intact, Realtor called JCSO and asked that deputies “speak to (Homeowner) about her conduct.”

Homeowner was more than willing to speak to deputies, telling them she’d “received threats in the past” and has “had issues with vandalism” and was prepared to believe that Realtor could be somehow connected to one or both. Homeowner denied trying to grab Realtor’s camera, saying she’d first demanded that Realtor identify herself, which Realtor refused to do, and then demanded that she delete any and all photos of her property, which she also refused to do. Officers advised Homeowner that taking pictures of a private house from a public roadway is not a crime, but hassling somebody so engaged could very well be. Homeowner agreed that she probably “over-reacted” and deputies closed the case.

Sheriff’s Calls is intended as a humorous take on some of the incident call records of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office for the mountain communities. Names and identifying details have been changed. All individuals are innocent until proven guilty.

Fire flow in Evergreen hydrants Fire flow, not water flowing, is the International Fire Code (IFC)-specific term used to define the minimum gpm (gallons per minute) of water required from fire hydrants. Different minimum fire flows are needed for different size square footage structures, i.e., apartments, singlefamily residences, multifamily residencesandbusinesses, etc. The minimum 2018 fire flows required by the IFC were recommended by our EFPD and other mountain fire districts to the Jefferson County Board of County Commissioners in 2018.

The fire districts’ recommendations were unanimously adopted in 2019 by the Jefferson County BoCC. The commissioners in 2019 were Lesley Dahlkemper, Casey Tighe and Libby Szabo.

The commissioners were very proud of their unanimous vote adopted to protect our mountain communities, homesandresidents. It sounded great!

Unfortunately, this unanimous vote has not and is not being enforced by anyone or any entity. EMD, EFPD nor the BoCC have lifted a finger to ensure the codified fire flow is enforced.

Clearly our fire districts believe the International Fire Code is best practices and needed in our mountain towns. It is self evident our county commissioners agree.

What are the ramifications of their failure to comply with their

own recommendations and unanimous adoption? Everyone’s or anyone’s homes, businesses and/or possibly their lives are at risk. It’s that simple.

The EMD fire hydrant network is NOT tested. The fire flow is unknown at any given fire hydrant location within the entire EFPD. It is unknown by EMD. It is unknown

by EFR, and it is unknown by Jefferson County. Jeffco Zoning will not enforce a zoning violation as it does not have jurisdiction over EMD or EFPD. Mathematical calculations can be done to determine what fire flow can be, however I’m not sure I want to rely upon calculations, when “wet stuff on the red stuff” is what’s needed to suppress a fire.

Logical-thinking individual would believe our fire chief and firefighters would want to know what the fire flow is when they are headed to any structure fire. But in reality, they do not know what, if any, fire flow can be expected at any given EFPD fire hydrant. There are close to 900 fire hydrants in the Evergreen fire-hydrant network. The entire fire-hydrant network is not tested by EMD or EFPD. This is not criticism; it is fact. But we do have the Fire Flow Fire Code with specific expectations codified by our BoCC. That’s equivalent to having a ‘valid lift ticket with no snow.’ Everyone can relate to that today.

Our awesome fire district has

invested heavily in a supplemental water tanker shuttle system. Fire truck tankers carry water to fires for fire engines to pump – but it’s only 250 gallons per minute - 25% of the minimally required 1,000 gallons per minute by code.

About our best practices fire-hydrant network at elevation found in Evergreen. Due to elevation, literally across all of Colorado, almost all fire hydrants are what is called dry barrel hydrants. This means the pipe from the hydrant to the belowground water main is, in fact, dry.

The risk is if water were pressured up to the street-level fire hydrants at all times, including in freezing conditions above the ‘freeze line’ depth of about 6 feet, the hydrant, pipe and or the water main would likely be at risk of bursting due to freezing.

That is an unacceptable risk. The nut or bolt at the top of the hydrant is what opens the valve 6 feet below the surface of the ground. In some instances, it may need to be pumped to start the fire flow of water if water is present.

This is precisely why testing, having data of flow or maintenance/ repair records is vital. Imagine a fire engine arriving at a fire, the firefighters attach their hose, open the fire-hydrant valve, and the valve breaks or otherwise will not open, or there is no fire flow or inadequate fire flow. These risks are unknown but very real.

It is likely the residents within the Evergreen Metropolitan District could ask for a bond to upgrade the water network, however the system was never designed, architected, engineered, constructed or operates to this day to fight fires. Our EMD was only intended to support and provide potable water to singlefamily homes on single lots. This is absolute fact. EMD has only surface water — Evergreen Lake. The other ugly fact, according to EMD is this, the Mount Evans/Bear Creek Watershed has declined significantly since measurements began. From 1980 to 2000, the mean average flow of water into Evergreen Lake was approximately 43 cubic feet per second.

The mean average water flow from 2000 thru 2021, to date is in decline to approximately 30 cubic feet per second. This is from EMD. Astonishingly this is sufficient water to support the existing network for homes today. However, EMD has and is taking responsible steps to change water consumption habits within the district. As Fire marshal, Jim King said in the November article, “Water is an issue everywhere you go.” The question is, do current Evergreen residents wish to exacerbate our circumstances by adding more risk to the current risky situations. More homes, single family or multifamily is not viable. Not because we don’t want it, it’s because the physical and natural resources constrain it.

Democrats may be positioned to maintain their political control of Colorado

T

he 2018 election couldn’t have gone much better for democrats in Colorado. They won all four statewide elected offices after holding only the Governor’s office the four previous years. After four years of a legislature with split control (republicans in the Senate and democrats in the House), they took control of the Senate and increased their House majority. Democrat Jason Crow defeated incumbent Congressman Mike Coffman in the 6th Congressional District, a long-time safe republican seat. Likely because Donald Trump’s unpopularity, Coloradans voted overwhelmingly for democrats across most of the state.

In the 2020 election, democrats held their legislative majorities at the state, their 4-3 Congressional edge and easily won the presidential election.

As we enter the 2022 election cycle, my initial analysis suggests that democrats are positioned to maintain their political control of Colorado.

While new district boundaries in state legislative districts that put several Columnist incumbents into the same districts has been disconcerting to people who are actively involved in the legislative process, the view from 10,000 feet suggests that democrats will retain significant majorities in both the state House and Senate.

On a federal level, each of the seven incumbent members of Congress’s new districts suggest that they will have few problems in their reelection campaigns. While

the new 8th Congressional district is said to be competitive, I believe the combination of voting trends within the district and the likelihood a republican primary will lead to a nominee who will have committed to a very conservative platform that will be less than appealing to unaffiliated voters will result in a democratic win resulting in a 5-3 democratic majority in our delegation.

Having said all that, it feels like there may be opportunities for republicans in the statewide elections next year. Governor Jared Polis and Attorney General Phil Weiser should have relatively smooth paths to reelection, but there could be openings for republican success in the races for Secretary of State and Treasurer. Former elected officials from Jefferson County are seeking the republican nominations.

Pam Anderson (who was the Wheat

Ridge City Clerk and the Jefferson County Clerk) and Lang Sias (who is a former state representative from Arvada) are running against Secretary of State Jena Griswold and Treasurer Dave Young.

While it is said that all politics are local, national trends will play a large role in these two statewide raises. Unless things change, President Biden’s lagging popularity willwork against the incumbents. But more important than that will be the role former President Trump continues to play in national politics.

For republicans to have a better 2022 in Colorado, unaffiliated voters will need to see less Trump domination of the party, or the former president will continue to be the same drag on republican success as he was in 2018 and 2020.

It’s goodbye, again, and I have a favor to ask

I

’m not exactly sure what you’re supposed to do when you retire.

I hear that often it involves hikes and beers with friends and reading the great books and binge-watching Marvel movies.

Those all sound rewarding. But I’m not sure that’s going to hold me for long.

So for now at least, I’m staying away from using the word “retire” in referring to what’s happening to me this week. I’ll just call it a transition from one state of being to another.

After Dec.16, I am stepping down as editor of Colorado Community Media, the publisher of 24 weekly newspapers, of which this is one, across eight counties.

I’m a lucky guy to have been working full time for newspapers for almost all of the last 40 years.

Every stop on my professional train ride has been fulfilling and, for the most part, big fun. And I feel like I’ve played a small role in a great endeavor serving a vital public need: Providing honest news and information.

Actually, I first exited this job last fall – I called it “semi-retiring” at the time — as I approached 65. I settled into freelance writing and reporting for various outlets along with

contract editing for The Colorado Sun. Then, early this year, The Sun became co-owner of Colorado Community Media as a partner in the Colorado News Conservancy. Not long after that, Larry Ryckman, editor Mark Harden and co-founder of The Sun, asked if I would step back in for a few months while the hunt was underway for a new CCM publisher and permanent editor.

I’m grateful to Larry for the chance to work once again with our talented and enthusiastic crew of journalists. I’m also thankful that our new owners hired Linda Shapley, my former Denver Post colleague, as our publisher. She has worked tirelessly to bolster our business and to steer our company toward quality journalism and community service.

And come January, my role as CCM editor will be filled by Lisa Schlichtman, a veteran Colorado editor and a resourceful newsroom leader. I wish her great success.

Reimagining ‘Nutcracker’ The pandemic posed both a challenge and an opportunity

When Holly Hynes, the internationally renowned costume designer, sat in the Ellie Caulkins Opera House watching the Colorado Ballet’s “Nutcracker,” she thought that it looked “pretty gorgeous.” Then she got a closer look at the wardrobe backstage.

The 33-year-old costumes — handme-downs from the San Francisco Ballet — were definitely showing their age. “They were worn … patched,” Hynes said. “The capes were so heavy.”

It was time for new “Nutcracker” duds and Hynes, who has created tutus and tights for the New York City Ballet, the Bolshoi Ballet, London’s Royal Ballet and La Scala in Milan, was commissioned to design them.

It was part of a $1.5 million revamp of the company’s production with all new sets and 177 new costumes. But not long after Hynes saw “The Nutcracker” in Denver, the plans were almost upended, as were so many things, by the pandemic.

As theaters closed and new productions were postponed, all the shops that depend on supporting plays and dance saw their work evaporate.

“I had 17 projects that came to a screeching halt,” Hynes said. “It was great that the Colorado Ballet decided to go ahead. It made a huge difference to 18 shops in this project.

Many of them would have folded if they hadn’t had the Colorado Ballet.”

In effect, the Colorado Ballet created its own stimulus package for costume designers and makers in the depths of the pandemic.

“We started talking to the shops in New York and here in Colorado and they were very anxious to do the work, because they had none,” Gil Boggs, the Colorado Ballet’s artistic director, said. “We got some benefit on price and we weren’t rushed.”

And the shops poured more effort into the project, Hynes said. “The work that came out of them was three times what we would have got-

ten if they had other projects.”

One of the workshops that was thrown a lifeline was ParsonMeares, in Long Island City, New York. In its four decades, the shop has made the costumes for a legion of Broadway shows, including “Phantom of the Opera,” “The Lion King,” “Cats” and “Hamilton.”

But in early 2020 it had no work and its 58 employees were furloughed. Then the Colorado Ballet came knocking.

“The Colorado Ballet gave us work at a time when we would have had none,” said Sally Ann Parsons, owner of the workshop. The contract enabled Parsons to bring back 35 employees, split up into three shifts so there would never be too many people in the studio.

Among the costumes ParsonsMeares was asked to make were the tutu for the Sugar Plum Fairy, the mice – very important in the “Nutcracker,” for those not versed in it

– the toy soldiers and the jester-like polichinelles, who spill from under Mother Ginger’s huge skirt.

Then the difficult part of crafting and fitting the costumes began. Normally the designer is very hands-on with the workshops and the ballet company and the costumes are fit to the dancers who will wear them.

But now everyone was isolated.

Hynes’ assistant drove into New York City and came back with loads of swatches and trim and over five days she selected the fabrics while sitting on her back porch. “There was a sense of urgency because we were worried whether we’d be able to get everything, whether there would be supply-chain issues,” she said.

Designs and cloth were distributed to the workshops and they began sewing. But the dancers who would be wearing them were back in Colorado. Measurements for each dancer had been sent along.

“We did fittings on dancers we knew, or Holly knew” that were about the same size, Parsons said.

Hynes borrowed neighborhood kids for the children’s costumes. Her assistant had a camera so she could view the fittings remotely. “Holly didn’t see costumes close up until last spring,” Parsons said.

And while the new costumes may not last another three decades, they were built to stand up to time.

“The costumes in a ballet like ‘Nutcracker’ are used for years and years, so you need to think about how you can make them adjustable,” Parsons said. There is extra material in the side seams and extra material in the bodices.

“Stretch is our friend so we want to incorporate it into jackets, bodices,” Hynes said. “The good thing about ‘The Nutcracker’ is that it fills the seats. The bad thing is it always SEE NUTCRACKER, P11

needs to be continually upgraded and refurbished. It is never-ending.”

Boggs wanted to keep the ballet in its Victorian setting, as it was in the original production – no modern adaptation, he said. “I am a little anxious to see the audience’s reaction to changing something that was working well.”

For Hynes the costumes are, in the spirit of ballet, an exercise of

theme and variation. “The first act is a period piece and in the second act you can let your imagination go wild,” she said.

“We try to carry something from the party scene that has stuck in Clara’s brain that carries over to the Land of Sweets,” Hynes said. One of those is her mother’s plum-colored dress transformed into the Sugar Plum Fairy’s tutu.

Another is a fabric print on a couch in the party scene that becomes the massive tent-like dress of Mother Ginger in the second act.

catch it, but it is fun for us,” Hynes said.

One ballet tradition is that the dancer who first dances in a costume has his or her name sewn into it. When the Colorado Ballet would rent costumes from a big company, like American Ballet Theater, Ramos said he’d sometimes find the names of great dancers, like Mikhail Baryshnikov or Angel Corella, in his costume.

“It is very rare to have a costume made on you,” Ramos said. “It is so special to have your name in a costume. We are the first.”

Using their voices Parmalee Elementary students participate in annual oral interpretation assembly

For more than 22 years, Parmalee Elementary School students have stood before the entire school to recite poetry and prose.

This year’s oral interpretation assembly on Nov. 19 was no different.

Students from virtually every grade stood on stage to recite everything from Shel Silverstein’s humorous poetry to one of President John F. Kennedy’s speeches to Shakespeare to President Abraham Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address.”

The selections were as diverse as the students who recited them, and their recitations were flawless, some using props and gestures to help convey the meaning. While the oral interpretation event used to be mandatory for students, it’s now voluntary.

The fifth graders participating this year stepped up their game, according to event organizers, who said many of the students have been competing against each other since they were in kindergarten. First-, second- and third-place awards are given to each grade.

Jen Van Praag, whose sons participated in the competition, attended Parmalee as a child and participated in the oral interpretation competition, so she understands the value of both public speaking and the event.

“The competition teaches a lot of life skills,” said co-organizer Van Praag. “I want (the competition) to continue.”

Fifth grader Caroline Heck, dressed in a long flowing dress, recited “The Lady of Shalott” by Alfred Tennyson. The 19-stanza poem tells of a young noblewoman stranded in a tower up the river from Camelot.

Caroline tied for first place with fifth grader Olive Fiore, who performed a skit by comedian Jim Gaffigan.

Caroline said she chose “The Lady

of Shalott” because she’s been reading one of the Anne of Green Gables books in which they were acting out the poem. Memorizing the entire piece took time, and she was perfecting the last stanza the night before the competition.

She has participated in the competition since kindergarten, noting it felt good to share first place with Olive. Caroline was nervous at first, and at times as she was reciting, she was trying to remember the next lines.

She and Olive agreed that public speaking is teaching them self-confidence.

Olive chose the Jim Gaffigan skit because he is her favorite comedian.

Olive noted that she’s pretty funny herself but not the class clown.

Oral interpretation comes easier for Olive because she is involved in Colorado Children’s Theatre in Evergreen, so she has some experience acting in front of an audience.

And once you get the hang of acting, Olive noted, memorizing the lines is pretty easy.

Olive has been in Parmalee’s oral interpretation competition once before.

“The difference between theater kids and normal kids when they recite something is theater kids have a bunch of pizazz,” Olive explained. “They put all their effort into making the crowd enjoy (the performance).”

Local peak renamed Mestaa’ehehe Mountain

The U.S. Board on Geographic Names has approved petition to rename a Clear Creek County peak Mestaa’ehehe Mountain.

During a Dec. 9 meeting in Washington, D.C., the board approved changing the name from Squaw Mountain, a name government bodies have recognized as derogatory.

The Mestaa’ehehe Coalition — a group of name-change proponents — noted in an email that no public comment was required at the meeting, as stakeholders were unanimously supported the petition.

The mountain, which is along Highway 103 near Echo Mountain ski resort, has been renamed for Owl Woman, a notable Cheyenne figure. She helped maintain peaceful relations between local tribes and new settlers until she died in 1847.

Owl Woman was inducted into the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame in 1985.

In Oct. 2020, representatives from the Northern Cheyenne Tribe and the U.S. Forest Service filed a joint federal petition to rename the peak Mestaa’ehehe Mountain in her honor.

Over the summer, Clear Creek officials, Evergreen-and Idaho Springs-area residents, tribal representatives and people of indigenous descent discussed the merits of the Mestaa’ehehe Mountain petition.

scribed how disgusting the former name was. Many compared it to other gender-and race-based slurs, saying it’s unacceptable for such a beautiful area to have such an offensive name.

Clear Creek County ultimately told state officials it supported the Mestaa’ehehe Mountain petition.

Then, on Nov. 19, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland issued orders that would streamline the renaming process for all derogatory names, including an order assembling a task force to rename all federal lands that share the mountain’s former name.

Making the physical change While the name Mestaa’ehehe Mountain is official on paper, changing all the local items that bears the peak’s former name will take some time.

The mountain is on U.S. Forest Service land, and has a fire tower and telecommunications equipment at the summit, USFS spokeswoman K. Reid Armstrong described. The U.S. Forest Service will have to change its signage for the mountain, and Armstrong didn’t have an estimate on how long that will take.

The agency will also have to rename its fire tower and telecommunications equipment, which she said will be an internal process that will likely take several months.

Clear Creek County also has several roads that bear the mountain’s former name, and several locals

have voiced their support for changing the roads’ names as well.

County officials previously explained that the roads bearing the peak’s previous name wouldn’t automatically change if the mountain’s did.

Now that the petition’s been approved, officials will have to decide whether and how to rename those roads, but there’s no formal proposal or process yet.

County Commissioner Randy Wheelock said the county will likely discuss that topic in 2022 now that the USBGN has approved the Mestaa’ehehe Mountain petition.

“I think a dialogue between local stakeholders and the indigenous community will help inform those decisions,” Wheelock said of the renaming the roads.

Residents have also wondered whether nearby peaks of Chief, Warrior and Papoose should be renamed as well. Wheelock previously described how the topic’s come up in discussions with tribal representatives, but hasn’t been revisited in several months.

Is Mount Evans next?

There are also several petitions to rename Mount Evans. Its namesake, Colorado Territorial Governor John Evans, is believed to have authorized the U.S. Army’s attack on Cheyenne and Arapaho people at Sand Creek.

There are at least four petitions to rename the peak: Mount Blue Sky would honor the Arapaho and Cheyenne peoples.

The Arapaho were known as the Blue Sky People among other tribes, and the Cheyenne have an annual renewal of life ceremony called Blue Sky. Both the Northern and Southern Arapaho Tribes, the Southern Cheyenne Tribe, and conservationfocused nonprofit The Wilderness Society support this petition, according to Wheelock.

Mount Cheyenne-Arapaho would honor the tribes who once called Colorado home and who were devastated by the Sand Creek Massacre. The Northern Cheyenne Tribe supports this petition, according to Wheelock.

Mount Rosalie was the name Albert Bierstadt, a landscape painter and the peak’s first-known summiter, gave the mountain in honor of his future wife. It was the mountain’s unofficial name until 1895.

The name Rosalie was given to a nearby peak after the mountain was renamed for Evans.

Mount Soule would be in honor of U.S. Army Captain Silas Soule, who refused to participate in the Sand Creek Massacre.

Clear Creek County can register support or non-support for any petition to rename Mount Evans. Wheelock emphasized that the county hasn’t taken a position yet on which petition, if any, to support.

Thus far, the state advisory board has not made a recommendation on any of the petitions.

Last December, residents in Clear Creek and beyond expressed mixed opinions on renaming Mount Evans. Some were in favor of a new name that honored Colorado’s first peoples, while others said it would always be Mount Evans to them.

Morrison paid parking stays for two more years

People visiting downtown Morrison will continue to pay to park for the next two years.

The Morrison Town Board on Dec. 7 agreed to extend its contract with Interstate Parking of Colorado for two years, and in exchange for a longer contract, the town will get 50% of the revenue from parking and citations.

When the board started the pilot paid-parking program in mid-June, the town received 40% of the revenues. Between mid-June and the end of October, the town received $102,000 in revenue from 48,000 vehicles that parked in downtown Morrison.

Board member Katie Gill, who serves on the town’s parking committee, said one of the goal of paid parking was to stop people from

parking in prime spaces while they were on bike rides. The board hoped the parking program would promote parking turnover that would in turn help local businesses.

Board members said while the paid-parking program has had some hiccups, and some residents, tourists and business owners have voiced their displeasure, they believe it is the best course of action for the town.

Interstate Parking of Colorado created a trial parking management system that is free for the first 30 minutes and $1 for the next 30 minutes. The second hour costs $1.50, third hour $2, fourth hour $3 and subsequent hours $5. A violation is $30 and doubles in 10 days for nonpayment.

Interstate Parking of Colorado operates similar systems in Idaho Springs, Breckenridge, Keystone and more. The program uses kiosks

placed throughout the downtown area and a smartphone app.

Some business owners have voiced concerns that locals will not frequent their establishments, while others say the program is a good idea because parking spaces turn over more often, allowing more visitors.

Some concerns have been voiced about employees paying high parking rates during shifts or having to walk in the dark to their cars parked in free lots that are further away.

The town has tried to address these concerns and offers free parking at Morrison Park and Red Rocks Elementary School on weekends, and employees can park for free on Mount Vernon Street.

District will move forward with summer detour It appears the detour around Evergreen Lake and through downtown Evergreen will be in place during the summer months for lake trail construction.

Evergreen Park & Recreation District board members said while they understood the concerns of business owners in downtown Evergreen and in the Lakepoint Center about the potential loss of revenue, they needed to move forward with plans to build a two-tier trail from the dam to Upper Bear Creek Road.

“I think we should stick with the planned schedule right now because we have grants to consider as well as the unpredictability of the weather,” board President Monty Estis said at the Dec. 7 board meeting. “We may start later than we think because of weather, we may start earlier, but for right now we need to go ahead. …

If there are serious issues, let’s address those with the traffic flow.”

Board members acknowledged that a definite timeline for construction won’t be determined until a contractor is selected in April or May. The timeline may change based on when construction materials can be procured.

Business owners are concerned about traffic congestion as vehicles moving south will drive on Evergreen Parkway, while those moving north from Highway 73 to Highway 74 will be detoured through downtown Evergreen and onto Meadow Drive. The timeline for the construction is estimated to be June through September.

Business owners who attended the EPRD board meeting said they understood the project needed to be built, and they knew it would be a great amenity for Evergreen, but

they hoped that traffic congestion could be mitigated in their busiest four months of the year.

One business owner said he has nightmares that he will look out onto Evergreen Parkway this summer, and traffic will be at a standstill, noting that tourists who have a negative experience won’t return.

Chris Vogelsang, EPRD’s project manager, said it was imperative to get the project completed when the weather is warm because a water pipe under the trail can’t be exposed for a long time. In addition, it is more difficult to compact soil and cure concrete when it’s colder.

In response to suggestions, he said it would be cost prohibitive to do the construction from the lake side and the four months of work could not be split into two two-month periods to skirt the summer months. It also would be difficult to begin construction in the fall because of weather concerns, he said.

Vogelsang promised that the contractor would monitor traffic patterns and make any feasible adjustments during construction.

He and business owners will meet monthly starting in January to keep everyone informed on updates.

Other items • The EPRD board agreed to name the district’s newest artificial turf field Teddy’s Field at Stagecoach Park. It is named after Teddy Wetzel, who died four years ago, and his parents were instrumental in bringing the field to fruition.

• The EPRD board agreed to increase the amount of vacation that employees earn. Beginning Jan. 1, employees working between 90 days and five years will earn up to three weeks of vacation a year, between five and 10 years will earn up to four weeks and more than 10 years will earn up to five weeks of vacation.

• The rec district has received more than 80 applications for the

executive director position, and the search committee is narrowing the applicants. The new executive director will replace Ellen O’Connor, who resigned in early November.

• EPRD staff has looked at possible uses for the two-acre property at Highway 73 and Malamute Drive: tennis courts, a sensory play park, a Ninja warrior course, a basketball court and more. Staff said these were just ideas that incorporated programs the rec district doesn’t

already have. They suggested the district meet with the neighboring church and the homeowners association to begin discussions.

• THe EPRD board will decide in January whether the May election will have by mail-in ballot or in-person voting. While mail-in elections are expensive, in-person elections require finding people to work the polling places, which can be difficult.

Report: 285 Corridor at extreme wildfire risk

A consultant’s report confirms what residents along the 285 Corridor already know: That area is at extreme risk for wildfire.

The first draft of the Community Wildfire Protection Plan for the 152 square miles that make up both the Inter-Canyon and Elk Creek fire districts looks at specific areas to assess their wildfire risks and what can be done to mitigate them. The majority of the area is rated at extreme risk for wildfire.

Representatives from The Ember Alliance, which wrote the report, plus officials from both fire departments answered residents’ questions at a meeting to introduce the draft report on Dec. 7.

Residents wanted to know when they could see a complete draft and comment on it, when they would see a list of the mitigation projects that should be done first and how those projects could be funded. They asked whether

grant dollars were available since mitigation work is expensive.

Corrina Marshall with The Ember Alliance said the presentation was conducted to entice residents to want to know more so they would look at the completed document when it is available in mid-January.

Fire officials said once the report is complete, they will look at both the listed high-priority mitigation projects and potential grant funding. That includes the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which will have money available for projects such as mitigation, though they agreed obtaining grants is difficult to navigate.

Jacob Ware told about 35 people at the meeting. “This goal is to update it every five years. We care immensely about this. Our biggest tool is educating you and communication with you as we start down this path. This hard work, and we’re going to do it together.”

A CWPP is defined as a planning document that identifies and prioritizes areas of hazardous fuel reduction and recommends the types and methods of treatment that will protect an at-risk community and its infrastructure. It determines which projects are the highest priority and what makes a difference.

The last CWPP for Inter-Canyon was done in 2007, and Elk Creek’s last CWPP was done in 2005.

Officials said residents can begin mitigation work now, starting with the simple things such as cleaning gutters. Next, they suggested residents remove all flammable material from within five feet of homes. In areas with densely clustered homes, it is

advantageous to have homes with linked defensible spaces.

“There’s a lot of risk in this community,” Marshall said. “If risk is reduced in one place, it helps the entire community. If you mitigate, you’re not only safer, but you’re making other people in your community safer.”

Both fire departments have programs that residents can take advantage of to move forward with mitigation. They offer a chipping program in which fire department personnel chip slash and haul it away. They also have an ambassador program with volunteers who are trained to answer residents’ questions and who are liaisons with the fire departments.

“This is just the first step in our goal of creating a safer community,” Inter-Canyon Fire Chief Skip Shirlaw said of the CWPP. “It will take a lot of work and working together to do it.”

Howling Praise Middle schoolers write and perform an original play on wolves

When members of the Evergreen Players middle school ensemble realized they were fascinated by wolves, they were inspired to write a play.

The group performed its play “The Mark” on Dec. 10, telling the story of a girl descended from wolves and her interactions with characters in other realms along the way.

The four students developed characters they were interested in, and with help from instructors Nya Kingsbury and Marilyn Herrs, they turned their ideas into the plot.

This play stemmed from actor Lindsey Atlas’ character.

“I based my character on a Greek character,” she said.

Throughout the class, both instructors could see the participants coming out of their shells as actors and as people.

“They’re really blossoming,” Herrs said.

In the hour leading up to the performance, an excited energy was clearly present in the room. While doing last-minute makeup touchups and running lines one more time, the group anticipated getting on

stage. They broke in giggles as they tried to practice their group howl.

“They’re just hilarious. They have so much fun,” Kingsbury said.

When thinking about their theater and performance experiences in general, the actors said they enjoyed having the after-school outlet.

“I can be as dramatic as I want,” actor Logan Lamont said as she tossed her head back in a mock faint.

Another actor, Noelle Sackett, appreciated the relationships that came out of the class.

“I’ve met a lot of cool people,” she said.

Actor Varenna Osgood was looking forward to performing in front of an audience.

“Literally everyone in my family [is coming],” they said.

The play drew an audience of about 20 people, who were captivated by the whole show. They laughed at the funny quips and applauded the dramatic monologues.

After the last lines were said, the group was not finished. Two cast members had visited Lancaster Sanctuary, a wolf-hybrid sanctuary in Idaho Springs, where they learned more about the animals and the effects humans and domestication can have on them.

The group presented information about wolves, hoping to raise awareness about the animals. It also took donations for Lancaster Sanctuary.

In Colorado schools, scenes of disruption, destruction Kids are acting out in class while struggling to cope

Prolonged school closures, adults clashing over political debates and families suffering job loss or the death of a loved one have all contributed to students misbehaving in school, said Holmes, whose nonprofit has worked with 35 districts this fall.

“Before we pathologize the behaviors of young people, let’s be honest about the state of the adults around them,” she said. “Modern humans aren’t great at managing the stress of prolonged uncertainty.

In many cases, workplaces have changed policies and practices to accommodate our current realities.

But we put young people back into schools, applied the old norms and schedules and ways of being, and are surprised that it appears to not be serving them.”

Rather than blame students, Holmes emphasizes the need for schools to reflect on the disciplinary systems they have in place and assess whether they’re effective for kids who have experienced 19 months of a pandemic.

Teresa Haynes, clinical director of a nonprofit that provides mental health support to 15 schools in Eagle County, is hearing from teachers about “some of the most extreme acting-out behaviors that they’ve

ever seen in their careers.” Kids have thrown things, hidden under tables and destroyed property, she said.

The mental health pressures are manifesting as destruction and outbursts in the younger grades, and as a quieter, more subtle uptick in depression and suicidal thoughts in the older grades, she said.

Haynes, clinical director of Hope Center of Eagle River Valley, oversees a team of therapists who work inside schools as well as a mobile, 24/7 crisis unit that is regularly dispatched to school campuses. This school year, not quite half over, is on track to surpass last year’s record in terms of the number of students who received support and the number of interactions between students and Hope Center clinicians.

Already this school year, the nonprofit has connected with 485 students and logged 4,551 interactions, she said.

Many of those have been suiciderisk assessments for middle and high schoolers, but also for children as young as 6 and 7, Haynes said.

Veronica Bell’s classroom devolved into a place of destruction this school year, with kids snapping pencils out of frustration, tearing up decorations and bulletin boards, and ripping math books to shreds.

“Then they would say, ‘Oh, I don’t have a math book anymore,’” said Bell, who left her teaching post at KIPP Sunshine Peak Elementary in Denver at the end of October.

The chaos escalated into violence at times, including the day a child grabbed two other students and dug his nails into their arms until they bled, leaving scratch marks on their wrists. The fight was over a stolen pencil. In a different incident, a student threatened to stab other kids and staff with scissors.

They’re in third grade.

As teachers returned to the classroom this year, determined to help catch kids up on academics, they were met with another challenge: students with more severe behavioral problems than many had seen before.

Teachers interviewed by The Colorado Sun said there are more outbursts and more cussing in class.

Kids are set off by schoolwork that feels overwhelming, and sometimes bolt from the classroom.

More than a year of pandemic uncertainty, and less structured time spent learning at home, have taken a toll on kids’ emotional wellbeing — and it shows in students’ lack of ability to interact with classmates, respect school staff and avoid succumbing to peers who are stirring up trouble.

The state Department of Education tracks the number of suspensions and expulsions in districts but won’t collect that data for this school year until the end of the year.

The classroom chaos comes as the state tries to offer more kids better access to mental health support, with a $9 million effort to connect kids in distress with three free mental health sessions.

All the volatility among young learners shouldn’t come as a shock, said Rebecca Holmes, president and

On top of that, kids who spent less time in the classroom last year and more time in Zoom or Google Meet are behind on social skills, including making friends and dealing with other kids they might find difficult.

“Some day, there will be some fascinating research,” Haynes said.

“There is a lot of division in our country about vaccination status.

Political division. It impacts families and it trickles down to kids.

Sometimes, people don’t seem as nice to each other as they used to be. And I continue to hear, ‘I can’t take another thing’ and ‘Now there’s another variant.’ It seems neverending.”

Don’t think those big-world conflicts aren’t affecting young people, said Sorin Thomas, founder of Queer Asterisk, a nonprofit that provides counseling for queer and transgender youth and adults in Denver, Boulder, Longmont and Fort Collins.

Too often, people are arguing about the effects on kids from masks or the virtual school year but avoiding the bigger picture, Thomas said.

Psychologists know how fighting and stress within a family affect a child’s mental health — now put that on the scale of the country, where national and local leaders are frightened and arguing about how best to stop a deadly virus.

It’s the macrocosm of a dysfunctional family, said Thomas, who uses they/them pronouns.

“It’s quite frightening,” they said.

“The pandemic in and of itself is scary, and then the way that leaders and adults have handled it, that’s scary. These are things that are impacting young people.”

And while trying to grapple with their fear, kids have largely been robbed of the coping strategies they depend on to preserve their mental wellbeing — such as spending time with family members and friends, said Jenna Glover, a child clinical psychologist and the director of psychology training at Children’s Hospital Colorado.

In rare move, 2 statewide GOP candidates to cap spending That means Ganahl, Anderson can sidestep donation limits

Two Republican candidates running for statewide office in Colorado next year have agreed to limit their campaign spending, a rare move that allows them to accept up to twice as much money from their donors.

Heidi Ganahl, a University of Colorado regent running for governor, and Pam Anderson, a former Jefferson County clerk running for secretary of state, both agreed to the voluntary spending constraints.

The candidates can now accept up to $2,500 from individual donors, up to $27,000 from small-donor committees and up to $271,550 from the state Republican Party.

“We can spend less time fundraising, more time talking to voters and talking about the hyper-partisan nature of that office right now,” said Anderson, who is a former executive director of the Colorado County Clerks Association.

coming-of-age moments like school dances, graduations, continuation ceremonies and first-day-of-kindergarten pictures, Glover said.

“There’s a grief that comes with that,” Glover said, noting that people often thrive when they have something to look forward to.

“Kids’ lives are really marked in huge milestones year by year in a way that when you enter adulthood are not, and that is hugely disruptive for their wellbeing when they miss these traditions and huge rites of passage,” she said.

Children also need routine and predictability to excel, she added.

“Life is never fully predictable, but over the last two years life has been unpredictable in a way that has caused so much stress in kids’ lives that it’s causing mental health problems,” Glover said.

But those mental health problems aren’t always easily identifiable.

When teenagers and tweens are angry or irritable or lash out, that’s typically indicative of depression, Glover said.

Similarly, when children erupt in a temper tantrum, they’re trying to communicate their stress and find a way to cope. Kids may scream or tear something up because they feel so overwhelmed and they’re attempting to soothe themselves, she said, particularly as they lack the emotional maturity or vocabulary to fully express how they feel.

She recommends parents re-introduce routines into their kids’ lives, with a consistent bedtime, adequate meals and safe social interactions, like socially distanced playdates.

“It’s a really small thing but the foundation of physical and mental health,” Glover said.

nahl’s campaign did not address their strategy. But a spokeswoman said that “governorships cannot be bought at an auction.”

Voters approved Amendment 27, a constitutional campaign finance overhaul, in 2002. It included limits on how much money candidates could accept from donors. But the amendment also included a loophole to those limits for candidates who agreed to keep their spending below a certain threshold.

A candidate for statewide office, Reteaching kids how to think about others In Bell’s classroom at KIPP Sunshine Peak Elementary, she picked up on behaviors from kids “trying to avoid work” and others seeking attention. She recalls one student who would lean far back in his chair, jump off swings or injure himself with a pencil to draw attention from the two teachers in the room. She also found students’ interactions became more aggressive, with a lot of roughhousing, and observed students missing some social cues.

“I think kids have been isolated for so long that they really haven’t had to think about other people in that way,” she said.

Bell realized the social emotional skills of her third grade students, who she also taught in first and second grade, had grown rusty and spent more time on those lessons.

“They’re still lagging because they haven’t had time to practice those skills,” she said.

About half the students in Bell’s class — 28 total — had a specialized learning plan or behavior plan and, even with a second teacher helping her, she struggled to give them all the support they needed.

Bell and her co-teacher did what they could to create a better classroom environment for students, rearranging their classroom schedule so that kids were tackling harder subjects, like math, when they were fresh in the day.

But by the end of October, she was still overwhelmed and feeling like she needed more support from her administrators. Suffering scalp pain and tension in her neck and back, she made the hard decision to leave teaching. The elevated behavioral issues, along with the lack of support from school leaders, contributed to her health issues, which ultimately propelled her decision to quit.

legislature and a few other offices may agree to the voluntary spending limits when they first declare their candidacy. For candidates running in 2022, the limits range from $88,225 for state House candidates to $3,395,275 for candidates running for governor.

Candidates can’t raise more than the traditional limit right away, however. They must wait until an opponent raises 10% of the spending limit.

So, in the governor’s race, Ganahl could not start accepting larger donations until Gov. Jared Polis raised about $340,000. (Polis has raised $626,000 for his reelection campaign so far.)

Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold, a Democrat, has already raised about $1.3 million, far more than 10% of the voluntary spending limit.

Ganahl raised about $135,000 in the three weeks after announcing her candidacy. About 10% of her 300-plus donations during that time exceeded the $1,250 individual donation limit for other statewide candidates.

Anderson didn’t announce her candidacy until after the last quarterly fundraising reporting deadline, so her donor information isn’t

yet public.

Candidates who accept the voluntary spending limits have an out.

Every time a new candidate enters their contest and doesn’t accept the voluntary spending limits, candidates who have accepted the constraints receive a letter from the secretary of state letting them know they have 10 days to back out of their pledge.

If they do abandon the spending limits, they don’t have to return any excess contributions they’ve already received. Colorado’s donation limits were second-lowest in the nation in 2018.

Anderson said she has no intention of revoking the spending limits if other candidates get in the race, but sees the spending pledge as central to her campaign for secretary of state.

Ganahl’s campaign didn’t respond about whether it would reconsider the spending limits at some point.

The Colorado Sun reviewed campaign accounts for primary candidates for governor, attorney general, secretary of state and treasurer in 2014 and 2018 and found none accepted the voluntary spending limits.

Brad Levin, a Democrat who

teacher at the Denver Center for International Studies at Baker, pins part of students’ behavioral challenges this year on their struggle to adjust to classroom expectations.

Many students have experienced more freedom in their learning environment amid the pandemic, working on assignments from their bed and getting up to grab a snack without asking.

“Now we’re asking them to come back as if the whole year and a half didn’t happen, as if they just know how to be in school,” said Muñoz, who is Colorado’s 2021 Teacher of the Year.

He urges schools to reflect on how much they’re listening to students amid the pandemic.

Madison Stockton, who teaches third grade literacy at Southmoor Elementary School in Denver, hasn’t experienced much chaos at school, but she recognizes that kids need a reminder of how to be respectful of adults and consider other people’s feelings. They’re not trying to be malicious, she said, but are “out of practice.”

“Those are just skills that now need to be explicitly taught because we can’t really trust that they’re getting these skills elsewhere since we’re still in this kind of apocalyptic pandemic world,” Stockton said.

Students’ emotions have grown more intense amid the pandemic,

she said, and while they’re able to better name their feelings this year, they’re having a harder time managing them.

She’s shifted her approach with students, starting the day with an exercise in which kids write down something kind someone did for them the day before and having kids rate themselves and the whole class on how they conducted themselves during recess. She also awards students for good behavior with raffle tickets they can use to enter a class lottery and win prizes, and she gives the entire class points that they can use to earn class spirit days or extra recess time.

Those strategies have all helped.

But they can’t solve one problem still hanging over Stockton and her colleagues: a growing list of work responsibilities that cut into teachers’ time to thoroughly address behavior management.

“If we’re not given that time and given that space to really focus on classroom community,” she said, “then the kids are not going to feel safe and they’re going to act out.”

’Tis the season for injuries Local ERs see increase in holiday-related cases

Dr. Ben Usatch said while the holidays are all about joy and bringing good cheer, no member of the family is immune to accidents that can result in an unplanned visit to the local ER. Usatch, an emergency medicine physician and medical director for UCHealth Hospital Highlands Ranch, said holiday injuries start early with the cold weather and continue with holiday decoration hanging through to Christmas, when presents are opened and can cause unexpected injuries.

Dr. Eric Hill, a HealthOne emergency room physician at the Medical Center of Aurora, said the holiday season is the start of winter, which means more ER visits with people who have slipped and fallen on icy, slippery surfaces.

competed for attorney general but failed to make the primary ballot, originally accepted the limits. But David Fine, his attorney, wrote to the Secretary of State’s Office that the acceptance was an error by Fine in filling out forms.

Legislative candidates more often accept the limits, but, like in Levin’s case, some have done so in error.

State Rep. Tom Sullivan, a Centennial Democrat, initially accepted the limits for his 2018 campaign in error.

He was able to withdraw from the limits when another candidate filed to run for the House seat.

Sullivan is running for a state Senate seat in 2022, but isn’t accepting the voluntary limits.

“I’ll never do that again,” he said.

“It doesn’t do you any good if you’re

in early 2022, doctors always anticipate an uptick in urgent care visits.

Besides cold weather bringing winter injuries, holiday-related injuries ramp up around Thanksgiving, which is the start of the holiday season, Usatch said. This is the time when families start putting out holiday decorations, hanging lights and signs.

Usatch said it is common for family members to venture into hanging lights and signs without someone serving as a spotter under the ladder.

Common injuries associated with decoration hanging includes bruises, lacerations and broken bones.

“Just be safe and ask someone to serve as a spotter,” Usatch said. “It is easier to have the help there than to fall and break something, get a concussion or have lacerations.”

Hill said as Christmas celebrations are held and gifts are given throughout the season, hospitals see a variety of toy-related injuries and issues.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in 2020 there were 198,000 toy-related injuries that required a visit to a U.S. hospital. Of those, males accounted for 57% of those injured and 75% of

the total injured people were under age 14.

Hill said one of his biggest concerns around the holidays is with babies and toddlers who regularly stick something in their mouth, ear or nose.

“Kids tend to put the small pieces from toys in various places,” Hill said. “Kids will start complaining about pain and problems. When they come to us, we find the pieces in the nose, ears or throat. These cases need special tools to fish them out.”

In situations where the child swallows a toy, Hill said the customary response from doctors is to wait.

Doctors wait to see if the child can pass it naturally through a bowel movement.

In situations where a child swallows a magnet, such as the popular ball magnet toys, or a button battery, Hill said there is more concern.

“The button batteries cause more concern because their makeup can cause burning and pain inside the stomach,” Hill said. “The magnetic balls can attach and pinch the inside the intestine, causing bowel perforation. This can require surgery to fix.”

Usatch and Hill said hospitals also

see patients who are not used to the new toys and gadgets they get for Christmas. Without being used to a new bike, electric scooter, hover board or other riding toys, kids often fall and get hurt. Common injuries associated with riding toys can start with minor cuts and bruises or lead to more serious concerns with concussions and broken bones.

Usatch said a common rule of thumb for parents to follow with any riding toy is to make the helmet an accompanying gift.

Hill said he is always surprised with the older patients that come in on Christmas. It’s not just kids playing on the riding toys, he said.

“We have seen cases where grandparents will be out having fun and trying to ride the toys too,” Hill said.

“This leads to them falling and getting hurt.”

Hill said in one case he managed, a 72-year-old grandmother tried to ride a hover board and ended up falling and breaking her hip.

Both Usatch and Hill said parents should read consumer studies on toys and gadgets, making sure they are age-appropriate and understanding the common injuries that are reported with each item.

Suzanne Taheri, a Republican and former deputy secretary of state, accepted the limits when she ran unsuccessfully for state Senate in 2020.

But she never raised money over the contribution limits.

“I never asked people for (more money) or advertised that I did it,” she said. “Part of it is, just a lot of people don’t understand what voluntary limits are. Most consultants will tell you not to take them.

They’re focused on how much money you’re going to raise, so they’re trying to get you to not limit yourself.”

Successful candidates, who did not accept the spending limits, often outspent them, a Colorado Sun analysis found.

In 2010, former Gov. John Hickenlooper, a Democrat, spent $3.9 million on his campaign, when the voluntary cap was about $2.7

million. Two candidates who didn’t make the general election ballot that year, former Gov. Bill Ritter, a Democrat who opted not to run, and former U.S. Rep. Scott McInnis, a Republican who lost the primary, each spent $2 million.

In 2014, Hickenlooper spent nearly $5.5 million on his gubernatorial reelection campaign, while his Republican opponent Bob Beauprez spent $2.9 million, about the same amount as that year’s voluntary limit.

In 2018, GOP gubernatorial candidate Walker Stapleton spent about $4 million on his campaign, well over the $3.1 million voluntary limit.

Victor Mitchell, one of Stapleton’s three unsuccessful primary opponents, spent $5 million, most of it his own money.

The Polis campaign spent $23.8 million, almost all of it the candidate’s own money, to win in 2018.

He’s already given $438,000 from his personal fortune into his 2022 campaign.

Polis limits his individual campaign contributions to $200, but his personal wealth means he’s got

millions to spend on next year’s campaign.

Taheri said she thinks it makes sense for Ganahl and Anderson to accept the voluntary spending limits.

“I think it makes sense in the governor’s race and the secretary of state’s race,” Taheri said. “You can’t raise that much money. It’s hard to raise $3.4 million. Then you don’t have to spend as much time fundraising if your donor base has the capacity to give you bigger donations.”

And outside groups often spend more than candidates in statewide contests. In the 2018 gubernatorial contest, for instance, Republican outside groups spent $14.5 million while Democratic groups spent $10.5 million.

Conifer girls basketball team looking to improve after close loss Nov. 30, scoring only seven points against Widefield’s 49. On Dec. 2, the team lost 71-8 to Skyview but had a much better game in its first tournament game against Steamboat Springs on Dec. 9, with a final score of 46-36.

While they still lost that game, this was undoubtedly their best game of the season and surely something to build on.

“We were so close,” said senior Cheyenne Prieto. “We had them in the first half.”

They followed up this game in the Steamboat Springs Tournament with games on Dec. 10 and 11. The first home game of the season for the Conifer girls basketball team will be Dec. 15 against Fort Morgan.
