Never the same Evergreen, Conifer football mourns the loss of Tom Poholsky

Something’s missing at Evergreen High School football practices and games.

More accurately, someone is missing as coaches and players mourn the loss of assistant coach Tom Poholsky. Poholsky, 54, died of an apparent heart attack on Oct. 6.

Things aren’t the same.

Coaches have lost a colleague, a friend and mentor, and players have lost a father figure, a teacher and a supporter. They called him unpretentious, genuine, larger than life, motivating, energetic and a gentle giant.

The standout quarterback for the Iowa Hawkeyes in the late 1980s worked with what is now called the Mountain Youth Football Association, and three years ago he became an assistant coach for Evergreen.

After his family, football was his love — and coaches and players alike lauded his eagerness to teach the game and be a cheerleader for all players no matter their skill level.

He wanted everyone to appreciate football.

Evergreen football head coach Matt Van Praag called Poholsky the most loving and caring yet competitive man he’s met. Poholsky, he noted, made deeply interpersonal relationships with everyone.

able and patient guys you will ever meet,” said Evergreen assistant football coach Dan Skelly. “He worked with kids really well.”

Lindrith “Lin” Eugene Cordell March 23, 1935 - October 3, 2021

Lindrith “Lin” Eugene Cordell, 86, of Evergreen, Colo. and Tucson, Ariz., died on Sunday, October 3, 2021 at Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital in Tucson after a short illness at the end of a long, full life.

He was born on March 23, 1935 in Santa Fe, N.M. to Lindrith Cordell Sr. and Margaret Heshion Cordell. Both preceded him in death along with his longtime stepmother, Norma Cordell; his sons, Paul Nils Cordell and Lindrith “Lindy”(Cordell) Davies; and a daughter-in-law, Denise Ruth Myrup.

from the University of New Mexico, Lin worked in Sweden and then interned at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). He spent more than 30 years with the USGS, based in Denver. As a globetrotting USGS geophysicist, Lin’s field work, lectures, published papers and professional connections took him all over the world.

Lin is survived by his wife and partner in adventure of nearly 50 years, Maureen Ollry Cordell; two children, Richard Charles Myrup (late wife, Denise) of Evergreen, Colo., and Tracy Myrup Sahler (husband, Frederick W. “Erick” Sahler IV) of Salisbury Md.; a daughter-in-law, Kelley L. Cordell (late husband, Paul) of Pine, Colo.; two grandchildren, Alison M. Sahler of Philadelphia and Molly M. Sahler of Salisbury; his adopted sister, Sheila Cordell Hickok (husband, Alan Hickok) of Rochester NY; nieces; cousins and other family members; and many close friends.

Lin and Maureen had moved their family from Maryland to Golden, Colo. in 1971 for his Survey posting. In 1974, they moved to a 10-acre property in Kerr Gulch. This working ranch home became known as the Kerr Gulch Lamb and Cattle Co. and later, the Old Cordell Place. After retirement they sailed all along the Eastern Seaboard and down to Venezuela on the Bluebird II and made many friends, including fellow cruisers as well as Venezuelans Loudvina “Quini” Vega, husband Sergio Reyes, and son, Alejandro “Alejo” Vega Reyes. Later they bought a camper in Europe, dividing their year between the ranch and leisurely travel through Europe. Eventually they purchased a condo in Tucson, Ariz., where they escaped the cold mountain winters and walked to Pima Community College to take classes into his early 80s.

Lin’s childhood was spent in New Mexico and Kansas and South America. After earning his bachelor’s degree in Geology with a minor in Engineering in 1958 and master’s degree in Geology in 1962, both

Lee (Held) Wolff

August 22, 1943 - October 17, 2021

On Sunday October 17, 2021, Lee Wolff, 78, loving wife, sister, mother and grandmother, passed away from pancreatic cancer. Lee was born August 22, 1943 in Washington DC and moved to Evergreen in 1980. In 1984, she met Paul Wolff. They married in 1991 and embarked on many adventures together.

Lee enjoyed a long career as a hair stylist and engaged in various hobbies. She showed her artistry, creativity and depth through her pottery, quilting, photography, music and writing. She enjoyed the comradery and FAUST

inspiration of the artistic groups in Evergreen. Her life was filled with joy from travels with her husband, children, grandchildren, friends, and other family members. Lee had an unbounded joy for life and family that will be missed. Lee is preceded in death by her brother, Allen Newrath. She is survived by her husband, Paul Wolff, her children Toby (Kurt) Zinser and Susan (Roy) Cotten, her grandchildren Mitchell and Alyssa Zinser and sister Claire (Alan) Auckenthaler.

George Faust 1926 - 2021

World War II veteran George Faust passed away peacefully at the age of 95 at Elk Run Assisted Living on October 12th, surrounded by loving family, and with the incredible help of Mount Evans Hospice. He was born in 1926 and spent his life in Chicago before moving to Evergreen in 2016.

He is survived by his son Wayne of Evergreen, his son Don of Davenport, Iowa, 5 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

Four inducted into Women in Business Hall of Fame

The four women inducted into the Mountain Area Women in Business Hall of Fame on Oct. 21 have business acumen and have given countless hours back to the community.

Linda Kirkpatrick, Betsy Hays, Linda Lovin and Susanne Robert are the third group of inductees into the Hall of Fame that the Evergreen Area Chamber of Commerce started in 2018.

In the inaugural year, Peggy Eggers, Gail Riley and Kristin Witt were inducted, and in 2019, Gail Sharp, Rita Felde and Kay D’Evelyn La Montagne became the second group in the Hall of Fame. No one was inducted last year because of the pandemic.

Kirkpatrick has been heavily involved in volunteerism for decades. She was instrumental in establishing a staffed ambulance facility in Evergreen and finding a place to build it, and she supported Bootstraps Inc., was co-founder of Leadership Evergreen, co-chaired the campaign to save Noble Meadow and expand Buchanan Park, and worked to create Stagecoach Park.

Kirkpatrick couldn’t be at the luncheon, but friend Cindy Lempke said Kirkpatrick expressed her appreciation to women at the luncheon because they exemplified the spirit of entrepreneurship and were role models for women in business.

Hays is the director of resource development for Mount Evans Home Health Care & Hospice. Before that,

she was president of the Evergreen Area Chamber of Commerce, leading the organization and businesses through the pandemic, and development director of the Mountain Area Land Trust.

Hays said she knew many at the luncheon because of the hats she has worn over the years.

“What I really appreciate is that you care about each other,” Hays said. “We really are all in this together.”

Lovin owned Lovin Books and Music in the late 1990s and went on

to be a teacher at Rocky Mountain Academy of Evergreen and Evergreen High School. She was donations manager for Mount Evans Hospice, a job coach at Evergreen Christian Outreach, and served on the boards for Center for the Arts Evergreen, Evergreen Chorale, Ovation West and the Rocky Mountain Literary Festival.

Lovin told the group that she was inspired by the women in her life and in her community who had made such a big difference, noting that words people say to others mat-

ter.

Robert is owner and managing member of Robert & Associates, a certified public accounting firm. She has been active in the Evergreen chamber, Women of Evergreen Business and Mountain Foothills Rotary, treasurer of Boogie Benefits and financial consultant to Resilience1220.

Robert said she was honored to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, noting “it’s a true pleasure … to give back to the community.”

Consultant suggests Morrison stop relying on ticket revenue to fund PD

Morrison officials need to stop relying on traffic-ticket revenue to pay for the police department, according to a consultant’s report that town officials received earlier this year.

While that was the first of 10 recommendations that consultant KRW Associates made as part of an assessment/climate survey of the Morrison Police Department, the Town Board said in a memo, “With respect to KRW’s recommendations, we found four that seemed both wellsuited to the department’s needs and in keeping with its mission.”

They are: • evaluate the department’s staffing, both for shifts and special events; • consider entering into an intergovernmental agreement with the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office to provide overnight-shift coverage when the police department gets few calls; • conduct a salary survey of comparable police departments to create an accurate tool to help with officer compensation; • develop enhanced lines of communication between the police department, town manager and the Town Board.

Concern about the fate of the police department has resurfaced after Misty Siderfin, who was hired as the town’s new police chief in July, resigned. Her last day was Oct. 21.

In her Oct. 7 letter of resignation, Siderfin stated she is “unable to

At the Oct. 5 Town Board meeting, Siderfin told the board she expected the police department to generate $300,000 in ticket revenue next year.

The proposed 2022 budget estimated that the police department would generate $690,000.

Town officials have not commented publicly on Siderfin’s resignation or discussed how they will proceed.

In August, Siderfin asked the Town Board to contract with the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office for $24,000 a month to provide Morrison with law enforcement for six months while she rebuilt the department. The de-

cision came because Morrison had lost several officers to other departments with higher salaries.

In September, at Siderfin’s request, the Town Board increased the starting salaries of officers from $43,000 to $55,000 annually, and Siderfin advertised to fill three officer, a detective and a sergeant position.

Only seven applicants were moving forward to phone interviews.

With Siderfin’s resignation, it is unclear whether the town will move forward with hiring officers.

Siderfin replaced George Mumma, who parted ways with Morrison in August 2020. A memo sent back then to the Morrison Police Department when he left outlined a failure to control traffic speeds and enforce the town noise ordinance.

At the end of 2019, as the town prepared its 2020 budget, there were discussions about the role of the police department. Court revenue has been on the decline since Mumma was hired in 2017, but the former chief maintained that he wanted to strike a better balance between writing traffic tickets and solving crimes. Ultimately, Mumma formed a three-person traffic unit that could focus on writing tickets while other officers were assigned to working cases.

Traffic-ticket revenue According to the consultant’s report: “The current and past atmosphere in Morrison appears to be one of each officer being expected during each tour of duty to write traffic tickets. The officers shared with KRW staff the sense that their continued employment is dependent upon their combined summons activity.”

The consultant said that writing traffic tickets to generate revenue as direct financial support for the department wasn’t in the best interest of the department or the public.

“We believe that lying in wait to write traffic citations to generate revenue is not serving the best ethical foundations of professional law enforcement,” the consultant wrote.

“Enforcement activity should and needs to occur to further the goals of traffic safety and town safety concerns, and not as a source of revenue to directly support the salaries of the issuing officers.”

A look at the town’s budget documents for the past several years

shows that the police department was expected to pay for itself, though the department had been falling short.

In 2021, for example, missing some police department personnel who resigned and hiring Jeffco Sheriff’s Office to provide law enforcement, the town has received $230,296 from traffic citations when $1.1 million was budgeted.

IGA with Jeffco Sheriff The consultant said the town could save money by contracting with the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office to work the graveyard shift from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., since that shift generates the least number of calls — approximately 4.7% of total calls.

In addition, KRW suggested that the department could operate with six full-time officers plus two parttime officers rather than up to 11 as it had in the past.

Salary study According to KRW, current and past police department employees said during interviews that pay and benefits were a significant factor, with some saying they could leave Morrison for other departments and double their salaries.

“Morrison should not accept the premise that Morrison should become a training ground for other agencies,” KRW said, “nor should Morrison accept the rationale that because of current low pay compared with other metro police agencies that Morrison is and should remain a revolving door of police applicants, trained and certified in Morrison and then leaving Morrison for a higher paying job.”

Disbanding the department While Morrison officials say they want to keep a local police force, KRW suggested that the town should consider disbanding its department and contracting for the service from Jefferson County, noting it would be less expensive for the town.

It also suggested the Morrison could make up the financial difference by allowing a hotel or a marijuana shop in the town that would generate additional taxes.

Morrison plans to allow a marijuana shop south of Bandimere Speedway and is working on language for an April 2022 ballot question regarding sales tax for the shop.

Ellen O’Connor, the Evergreen Park & Recreation District’s executive director since 2014, has turned in her resignation.

Her last day is Nov. 4.

O’Connor said she was leaving the rec district to pursue some new O’Connor opportunities, and she also planned to take some time off to be with her grandson.

O’Connor joined EPRD nearly 13 years ago. She said she planned to stay active with some rec district projects, and she wants to be available to help her team with a smooth transition when a new executive director is hired.

Monthly lunches for senior citizens are returning to Evergreen.

A new nonprofit called Seniors4Wellness is organizing the meals to allow seniors to socialize and have a good meal — replacing the Friday Cafés that the Seniors’ Resource Center used to operate in the Yellow House.

Friday Cafés will be monthly in Douglas Hall on the Church of the Transfiguration grounds on the east end of downtown Evergreen. They will be limited to 40 people with reservations and proof of COVID-19 vaccination required.

The first lunch will be Oct. 29, and it is already full. There will be a Thanksgiving lunch at 11:30 Nov. 19, and the next Friday Café will be Dec. 3. Castles & Kitchens, a Conifer caterer, will provide the meals.

Vince Ventimiglia, a former Seniors’ Resource Center employee, created the nonprofit as he saw the need for more services for seniors after the Yellow House closed permanently thanks to the pandemic.

The SRC still offers in-home services for seniors in Evergreen and Conifer but doesn’t have a location for day programs and meals.

Ventimiglia told 16 people who attended an organizational meeting on Oct. 22 that he wants to plan weekly senior activities on the Fridays when there aren’t lunches, keeping the seniors’ physical, mental, social and nutritional well-being in mind.

He wants to poll the seniours to find out the types of programming they would like.

Those who attended the organizational meeting came from area service clubs, organizations that provide services to seniors and

those who wanted to volunteer. They were eager to help find more activities for seniors, especially as people living in the foothills are aging.

Ventimiglia explained that he wanted to find grant funding to build programs and to find ways to provide transportation to seniors who need to go down the hill for medical appointments. He is also looking for people to serve on an advisory committee.

Neighbors want Forest Hill Road improvements Rezoning proposal sparks discussion about issues with the road

Neighbors of the Forest Heights Lodge in Evergreen are less concerned about a proposal to turn the lodge property into 16 residential lots and more upset with what they called Jefferson County’s lack of maintenance of Forest Hill Road.

“I think the project fits up here, but the county needs to provide us with a safe road and a safe intersection at Highway 74,” said neighbor Ivan Wolverton during a community meeting on Oct. 13 about the proposed rezoning of nearly nine acres to planned development. “The county is not holding up their obligation to the citizens.”

More than a dozen neighbors voiced concerns about how the winding, dirt road that runs from Little Cub Creek Road over the hill to Highway 74 is so narrow in some places that it is only wide enough for one car. They were concerned that once the property is subdivided, a large number of homes will be built at once, and construction traffic will destroy the road.

“Everybody on this call would reiterate that the roads are in pretty rough shape,” one neighbor said.

“I don’t have much confidence that Jeffco will do anything. I think everyone on this call would say these roads are unacceptable.”

Residents suggested that they and Jeffco authorities should meet to discuss options for improving the road.

Resident Michael Whitehouse said neighbors could negotiate with Jeffco to provide some land to help widen the road where possible, and Jeffco should waive road-width standards to allow for paving.

“We cannot (be in favor of) the project without the road being improved,” Whitehouse said. “We want it properly paved and paved to the depth that (the road) will take heavy equipment.”

He also noted that access to Highway 74 from Forest Hill Road by Murphy’s Mountain Grill is a disaster waiting to happen because it is impossible to see traffic on Highway 74 thanks to the building and parked cars.

includes several buildings and three homes for staff. Thanks to the pandemic, the facility closed its Evergreen location and moved down the hill, according to Executive Director Jody Olson.

Olson said he has tried to find a buyer for the property who would run another residential treatment facility to no avail, since that is the only allowed use for the land, so the next option is residential.

Jeanne Shaffer with Chadwick Land Use Entitlements, who represents the facility, explained that the lots would be similar in size to surrounding lots, and an exact plan would be available once the property

has been surveyed. The proposed zoning would be planned development because roads run through the acreage, and a planned development would allow the zoning to be kept to Mountain Residential-1 standards Olson noted that the property already has 17 water taps and 15 sewer taps from the Evergreen Metro District, so no additional taps would be needed.

Some of the 35 people on the Zoom meeting said Olson and the facility had been good neighbors over the years.

Recommended denial of Kitty Drive rezoning The Jeffco Planning Commission has recommended denying a proposal to rezone property on Kitty Drive in Conifer to allow for indoor and outdoor storage.

David Figuli, who owns the sixacre property, wants to provide indoor storage plus outdoor storage for RVs, and the Planning Commission was concerned about visual and noise impacts to surrounding neighbors. Commissioners said that vegetation and buildings would not mitigate the views from homes above the property.

They also agreed that the proposed use on the property does not comply with Jeffco’s Comprehensive Master Plan.

“I don’t believe overall that largevehicle storage belongs in this mountainous environment, even though it’s convenient for residents,” said Commissioner Tom Hatton. “I don’t think we should have this type of storage here.”

The recommendation goes before the Jefferson County commissioners at their meeting on Nov. 2.

County commissioners make the final decision on the proposal.

Jeanne Shaffer with Chadwick Land Use Entitlements, who represented the owner, said having RV storage would be a service to residents in the community because

many homeowners associations prohibit RV storage on private property. She said the nearest RV storage facility was 18 miles away, and it was full.

She added that Figuli would erect carport-type storage, so the RVs would not be completely exposed.

Neighbors opposed to the rezoning said that outdoor storage and light industrial are incompatible with residences, and they were concerned about additional traffic on Kitty Drive and Highway 73, wildlife migration, and additional water and wastewater usage.

Neighbor Heather Roberts asked the Planning Commission to recommend denying the rezoning to maintain the quality and integrity of the community.

Rezoning requested for lot in Kittredge The owner of a half-acre property at 3402 Avenue C in Kittredge wants to rezone it to build either a singlefamily home or a duplex.

Property owner Wendell Huggins has filed the rezoning request, asking to change the zoning from commercial to a planned development with Mountain Residential-2 restrictions to allow for the housing.

Huggins is asking for a planned development because the lot size is too small to allow even one residential building, according to documents filed with Jeffco Planning & Zoning.

The lot is in a residential area.

Three people attended the community meeting, happy that a home would be built on the property.

The divisions wrought by the disinformation age

D

isinformation certainly fuels our political divide. There is a cottage industry which creates and sends partisan emails into millions of inboxes.

We open them because they were sent by a friend. Of course, the friend sent them because they got it from another friend. None of these friends took the time to fact check the accuracy of the information because the email matches their preconceived beliefs.

Many emails were paid for by one of the political parties. Email campaigns are inexpensive, and there are no honesty standards associated with them. The origins are hard to trace, so well-written fiction gets believed.

The only way these fictional emails could be discredited would be if fact checking were prevalent. But a recent survey shows that 42% of Americans distrust the fact-checkers, showing the strength of the disinformation.

We all remember the days when Walter Cronkite ended his news reporting with the words “and that’s the way it is,” and we all believed him.

In the good old days, network news divisions believed that they were not there to make money for the network,

but to bring the truth to Americans.

They had reporting standards that required that news was strenuously fact checked before it was live. We believed the news because the news process had integrity.

The good old days Columnist began to end in the ‘60s when networks recognized the profit opportunity that expanded news coverage held. Today six corporation giants own 90% of the media outlets in America, and the era of news as a profit center has come full circle.

Add that a majority of online content we consume on the internet is controlled by Comcast, AT&T and Verizon, and the illusion of independent news is gone. News exists to make a profit, not to inform Americans.

Of course, you know how it works.

On average, each TV hour contains 44 minutes of programming and 16 minutes of advertising. The advertising rates charged to advertisers are the direct result of the size of the view-

ing audience. The more eyeballs, the higher the rates, and the more profits delivered by the outlet.

The three cable “news” stations who broadcast what they call news have increased their audiences by focusing on feeding their most loyal viewers what they want. They have learned that what really increases audience size is outrage and fear delivered with sensationalism.

Fox News dropped the “fair and balanced” motto in 2017, changing it to “most watched, most trusted.” They want to be watched, and they aim to be trusted by those who are among their loyal audience.

Fox is the audience size winner, but all three cable “news” networks are driven by the same motive … audience size. Thus, we see the critical question: What will get viewers to watch, rather than how can we get the news right?

This singular focus on audience size by the six TV and cable news operations has led to a focus on sensational coverage and more emphasis on being first rather than being the most accurate. Now add the enormous budgets the political parties employ to slant the news toward their issues, candi-

dates and ideologies. Finally add in political party use of paid social media advertising. The result is a news environment in which repetition, not accuracy, carries the day. If we hear it over and over, it becomes the truth.

Repetition causes belief.

It’s no wonder that we have two Americas, each supported by “news” to convince each side that they are the good guys. Many patriots are deeply worried about where all this is leading us. We become more and more entrenched, and our Congress falls in line by failing to work for any reasonable level of cooperation. It seems that the Information Age has turned into the Disinformation Age, and it is not serving an America that honors “truth, justice and the American way.”

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Just One Time FSBR developers will claim in their application that they address all concerns regarding traffic safety, environmental impact, and burdens to infrastructure. If one examines its presentation to Conifer Area Residents (posted on their website), one will see that FSBR owns no clear idea of what those mitigations entail. The county and the state will hold FSBR strictly to regulatory requirements but what if: ·FSBR fails because it cannot bring in enough water? ·Just one time, area residents’ wells run dry, or are polluted by FSBR? ·Just one time, North Turkey Creek is contaminated by human waste? By oil leaking from patrons’ automobiles or FSBR equipment? ·Just one time, food waste from the restaurant clogs their septic drain field, or their wastewater discharge overruns its drainage rate? And fills the valley with their stench? ·Just one time, an Elk Creek District resident dies in their home because a District ambulance is responding to an eminently preventable injury at FSBR? ·Just one time, a resident, patron, or contractor is injured or killed by the increased traffic on Shadow Mountain Drive?

And what if, just one time, that resident is a child at one of four school bus stops along that 2.2 mile stretch of road?

It is apparent that FSBR has not thoughtfully

considered any of the above possibilities. The county will do its best to protect its citizens, but the only fool proof way to accomplish it (I do mean “fool.”) is to not permit the development at all.

Scott O’Connell, Conifer A worthy venture I would like to encourage the community to get behind the efforts by North Star Ventures to develop the former Observatory property alongside the El Rancho property. This will not only improve the property and remove the safety risk that is that property but increase public safety for the community by the develop building new facilities for Foothills Fire & Rescue along with Alpine Rescue.

A fire station is expensive. You not only need to have increased space for the larger fire trucks as we also see with the need for Evergreen’s new station one but there is a need for decontamination, ventilation and protecting firefighters health.

Firefighters get cancer. They need to be able to decon their bunker gear and equipment following calls. They also need meeting space as well as space for quarters. They may be volunteers but they often work in time to crash at the station offering the community more of a rapid response.

There are over 1,000,000 volunteer firefighters in the US, but that number is dwindling. Time commitments for training is increasing and have

to be schedule around “a real job” and family. I suggest readers go to Amazon and pickup a copy of Fire Chief by Ed Daniels. This book was written about the Foothills Fire District.

As a former Firefighter and Investigator for Foothills (1998-2003) I know firsthand that this new facility is needed. Chief Alan Anderson has done an amazing job during his tenure and we need to back this effort by North Star.

Pass the gas Historically, Evergreen gas stations have jacked up the price of gas in the summer to take advantage of the tourist trade. We all understand that and fill up accordingly. However, even though we try to shop locally, we are being taken advantage of. The price for gas has been $3.699 for a while.

Yet the same chain station on Hampden is $3.199.

COSTCO is $2.999. Hawaii is usually $1 more/ gallon and has been for decades; understandable given transportation costs. However, on Oahu, gas is $3.999 - only 30 cents more a gallon than Evergreen.

While gas has risen significantly in a year for a number of reasons, I can see no reason to support what certainly seems to be local price gouging and will not buy gas in Evergreen until our local stations are in line with pricing down the hill.

VOICES CCMS journalism students take on issues

Editor’s note: These articles were written by student in Stephanie Mellon’s journalism class at Clear Creek Middle School Devious licks leave a bad taste

By Donovan Miller You may have heard of the devious licks that have been blowing up on social media, and when you can’t clean your hands in the bathroom during a pandemic, you can thank these devious licks. Devious licks are when teens try to steal the most expensive thing in school, usually Donovan Miller the soap and napkin dispensers.

“It’s illegal and destructive and just one more thing to cause issues,” said Mr. Miller, Clear Creek assistant principal. The teachers and coaches obviously don’t like it because “it’s theft,” said Miller.

“Kids need to grow up and mature.

You’re in high school and middle school. It’s time,” said Beau Campbell, school resource officer. If you get caught with a lick no matter how devious, how unholy, how evil there will be consequences.

“I would take care of business,” said Campbell. “They would be in trouble and pay for anything that was broken and out-of-school suspension depending on the amount of damage,” said Miller.

Some anonymous students told about their experiences in the devious industry. An anonymous person said, “I think it’s pretty funny, but if you’re gonna steal something, please don’t steal the stall door.”

Another anonymous person said, “I stole Mr. Gould’s hair.”

C’mon, like that’s just harsh.

Many kids, including me, think that this is dumb and stupid and should be stopped before it gets out of hand.

For example, kids have been taking it far and stealing school buses.

Donovan is an 8th grade student at CCMS. He likes to play basketball, and football.

Halloween Spirit is everywhere at CCHS/MS

By Madison Oliver The Halloween spirit is thriving at Clear Creek High School/Middle School.

The smell of pumpkins and Halloween spirit lingers in every room, and decorations hang high above every student.

Mrs. Mellon, a teacher at Clear High School/ Madison Oliver Creek Middle School, said her favorite part about Halloween is that Halloween vibes always brings her spirits up.

Hannah Royer, a seventh grader at CCMS, said her favorite part of Halloween is watching scary movies with her friends. In general, Hallow-

een is a great night filled with candy, scary movies, and spooky vibes; it is always a great night.

One of my favorite memories of Halloween is when my best friend and I trick-or-treated the entire town of Idaho Springs. We got two buckets full of candy.

Last year a lot of kids were not able to trick-or-treat because of the pandemic, so they are even more excited for Halloween than they were the years before.

So get out your scariest costume and have a spooktacular night!

Madison Oliver is a 7th grade student at CCMS. Some hobbies she has are playing with her new puppy and playing volleyball.

New teachers at CCMS

By Kambrey Martin This year Clear Creek Middle School has two new teachers, Mrs. Wilkerson, the history teacher, and Mr. Thombs, the science teacher.

The two moved here from out of state to teach at Clear Creek Middle School.

Jade Wilkerson, the new Clear Creek Middle School history teacher, chose to teach in Clear Creek because she enjoys the mountain community.

Wilkerson said, Kambrey Martin “The view I have out my window is the best you could get when teaching.”

Wilkerson also said, “I wanted to teach at a small school.”

When not in the school building, Wilkerson enjoys getting outdoors, biking and hiking every weekend.

Wilkerson thinks she can improve as a history teacher by learning more about the information she teaches. Wilkerson also adds, “I’m glad to be here. Everyone is giving me a warm welcome. It’s a great start to the school year!”

Dylan Thombs, the new Clear Creek Middle School science teacher, chose to teach in Clear Creek because he wanted his next school to be in a rural setting.

“I wanted to get as far away from a city as I could, but still be in a town.” Thombs said. “I want the school to know I’m still a human being, and I still have emotions and feelings.”

Thombs thinks he can improve as a science teacher by assigning more hands-on projects and grading in a timely manner.

Thombs said, “You may hate my Science-in-the-News assignments, but in the end, it’s important.”

September is Suicide Awareness Month

By Merrell Harvey Since September was suicide awareness month, the mental health professionals at CCMS/ HS are educating students about the

signs of suicide. Suicide is a hard topic to talk about, but we need to talk about it because no one wants to lose a loved one.

MS counselor Brian Tracey said, “Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S.” Mr. Tracey also said, “I think that the people are suffering from depression or other mental health problems that have not been addressed.”

When seventh-grade student Hannah Royer was asked about why people attempt suicide, she said: “They’re depressed, and they feel lost and trapped.”

She also said that if someone you know has suicidal thoughts, you should tell them, “Don’t do it.

Everyone loves you. Your family and friends would miss you.”

If you suffer from depression or have suicidal thoughts, you should reach out for help and tell someone.

Middle school students can go to the counseling office and find resources and mental health professionals.

If you don’t want to talk to someone at school, you can call Colorado crisis services at 844-493-TALK (8255).

Middle school dating: good or bad?

Some have a relationship that they really enjoyed being in, but then it ended very poorly, which ruins the fun idea of dating.

Others say that dating in middle school is a fun new Aerah Fulton experience, and it is a good way of preparing for high school and adult relationships.

Seventh grader Macy Garcia said that dating is a fun experience, and yeah, your relationship can end badly, but that will just be preparing you for more breakups in the future.

When you put it that way, dating sounds great, but that is not always the case.

Macy’s sister, eighth grade student Cali Garcia, said that middle schoolers should date because you learn about relationships, and that’s a good thing.

When eighth grader Noah Windley sees middle schoolers dating, he said he feels “Jealous because I’m lonely, and I see a lot of other people in middle school that are dating.”

You see, some people like Noah don’t like to see others dating because they feel upset, and it brings back memories that they want to forget.

On the other hand, some kids aren’t even allowed to date because their parents believe that middle schoolers are too young and immature to start dating other people.

High school counselor Ms. Loitz said that she is OK with middle school dating as long as you are being appropriate with it and have fun in the

right way.

All in all, middle school dating is not for everyone, but it can be fun and a good learning experience.

Vaping messes you up

Some types of vaping devices include pens, e-cigarettes (like JUUL) and hookahs. While vaping appears to be a healthier alternative to smoking cigarettes, there are still many health risks involved.

Is vaping bad for you?

Yes, vaping is very bad for you, your heart, your lungs, etc. According to this article called 5 Vaping Facts You Need to Know | Johns Hopkins Medicine, it says that vaping “raises your blood pressure and spikes your adrenaline, which increases your heart rate and the likelihood of having a heart atCali Garcia tack.”

Most people agree that vaping is a substitute for smoking and has less harmful chemicals. Others say it’s an addiction, and it’s similar to smoking a cigarette. Principal Gould thinks vaping is bad “because of all the nasty things in the juice.”

So, why do people vape? Ruby Terrazzi thinks people vape because “They get peer pressured into it, and then they can’t stop.”

According to an article on teensmokefree.gov, “Nicotine is very addictive. The more you vape, the more your brain and body get used to having nicotine, and the harder it is to go without it. When you go without vaping, the nicotine level in your bloodstream drops, which may cause unpleasant feelings, physical symptoms and strong urges to vape.”

So unless you want to be strapped to a lifelong addiction to nicotine, you should probably think twice before you hit the vape, as Blake Jeffers said, “It damages your lungs and f’s you up.”

SHERIFF’S CALLS Where there’s smokes…

CONIFER – He surely is a pesky varmint, said Pecos Bill. Originally from the Lone Star State, Pecos told deputies that about a month earlier he’d left an Amazon Kindle, a Zippo cigarette lighter and a pack of (what else?) Marlboros sitting on his patio, only to find them up and rustled before morning. About a week later another pack of Marlboros, another Zippo lighter and thirty dollars cash-money had been lifted from the porch table by night. But Pecos was armed and ready when the late-night looter struck a third time, catching a skinny six-footer wearing shorts and a T-shirt red-handed.

Looking down the barrel of the ticked-off Texan’s blue-steel widowmaker, the persistent pilferer made like a dogie at branding time and bolted for open range. Incredibly, the impetuous polecat tried again a few nights later, once more risking his skinny neck for another half-pack of smokes and a half-ounce of butane, and once more finding himself mug-to-muzzle with Pecos Bill and his pearl-handled peashooter. Pecos didn’t have the heart to plug the pathetic patio plunderer, who ran off again. He did, however, decide it

was high-time to round up a JCSO posse. Deputies took a full report and said they’d try to find out if the lanky desperado has been busy elsewhere in the territory. They also advised Pecos that, in their humble opinions, what the situation called for was less handgun-confrontin’ and more sheriff-callin’. Pecos said he’d keep his pistol holstered and his telephone cocked.

License to chill EVERGREEN – By his own account, Mickey Motorist had made three separate appointments with the local DMV office and had yet to sit down with an actual live person.

His third attempt at human connection on the morning of Sep. 28 was rebuffed by DMV personnel who told him that Sep. 28 was not actually the date of his latest appointment. Steam jetting out of both ears, Mickey demanded to be heard.

Miffed about Mickey’s melodrama, the security guard escorted him outside and told him to “(fluke) off.” Instead, Mickey “beat” on the windows and “pulled” on the front door until JCSO deputies were summoned. Mickey asked deputies to charge the security guard with

criminal vulgarity, or something.

Deputies agreed that while telling Mickey to (fluke) off may have been “incredibly inappropriate,” it wasn’t really illegal. What is illegal, the officers continued, is breaking the front door of the local DMV office, which Mickey seemed to have done. Deputies offered Mickey some friendly face-to-face advice, and personally issued him a ticket for criminal mischief.

Honk if you’re ornery EVERGREEN – Heading to work on the morning of Sep. 29, Toyota fell in behind Nissan somewhere on Meyers Gulch Road. Arriving in Kittredge, Toyota was ideally situated to observe that Nissan neither “stopped fully” at the intersection nor “signaled his turn” onto westbound Bear Creek Canyon Road.

Apparently a stickler for traffic regulations, Toyota gave Nissan a stern “honk” of disapproval. Apparently a stickler for highway propriety, Nissan replied with one of his own. The small convoy proceeded up the canyon to downtown Evergreen, where Nissan “made a U-turn” in the middle of Main Street and offered Toyota a “hand gesture” of

disapproval, and then made second one-eighty to take up position just off of Toyota’s aft bumper. Leaning on his horn most of the way, Nissan trailed Toyota to Little Cub Creek, where Nissan screeched to a stop and leapt from his vehicle. “What’s your problem?” Nissan demanded.

“Learn how to drive!” counseled Toyota. “I’m gonna’ (foul) you up, boy!” Nissan pledged. On the very real chance that Nissan might mean it, Toyota launched a preemptive strike against Nissan’s noodle with his right fist, and then called JCSO. After following the wandering threads of testimony for a while, deputies concluded that, although both men were guilty of road rage, Nissan’s harassment and Toyota’s assault effectively canceled each other out, and neither was fined for his foolishness.

The name for her book was drawn from the Mother Goose nursery rhyme, “Monday’s Child is Fair of Face,” which says “Thursday’s child has far to go.”

Public weighs in on Bear Creek Lake expansion Residents give input into Feasibility Study process

A virtual meeting held Oct. 14 gave folks a chance to comment on the proposed expansion of Bear Creek reservoir. A feasibility Study for the project being conducted by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) is currently underway.

At the onset of the meeting, host, Christopher Fassero, USACE, said folks would have a chance to hear about the study’s objectives, opportunities, constraints and considerations.

“These are things on which we would like public input,” he said.

The opportunities he was speaking about referred to an expanded reservoir’s ability to store more water supply, store agricultural augmentation water and prevent the area downstream from the reservoir, from running dry in periods of drought.

Fassero said the reservoir’s proximity to Bear Creek and Turkey Creek would allow for immediate capture of any available water flows that could be legally stored (as opposed to having to store it off-stream somewhere and having to pump it for use).

He said the relatively high elevation of the reservoir makes it possible to use gravity to deliver stored water.

The first objective would be evaluating the availability of existing storage in the reservoir.

Another objective would be to determine whether there’s storage in the reservoir that could be reallocated for water supply and whether it’s technically feasible to modify the project to create additional storage. Those modifications could be either physical — like raising the dam, or operational — like modifying the Water Control Plan, which is the document that governs regulations about when, and how much, water can be released.

One constraint Fassero referred to would be the need to address dam safety issues before reallocating (increasing) water storage.

“The primary authorized purpose of a dam is flood risk management,” Fassero said. “So, any impacts to the water supply reallocation on that purpose have to be carefully considered.”

For the most part, public comment was firmly against any attempt to increase storage in the reservoir.

Fassero stressed the study would take risks of storing more water into account before recommendations are made. He said any recommendations made by USACE would have to comply with applicable laws stressing the need to mitigate environmental, cultural or recreational impacts on the project.

There are also things like water quality and general character of the park that would need to be considered before changes to the reservoir could be made.

The goal of increased storage at the reservoir is meeting projected water needs of the state as the population continues to grow.

Bear Creek Lake is currently allowed to store 2,000-acre feet of water.

The proposed expansion would grow that capacity to 22,000-acre feet of water storage. However, additional water stored in Bear Creek Reservoir would not be used to support higher density growth in Lakewood or surrounding areas. It would instead go to accommodate growth in Dacono, Berthoud and Brighton.

Fassero said comments from the meeting would be archived and public input would be taken into consideration throughout the duration of the feasibility study.

Colo. hospital ICUs fill up amid COVID surge Polis: ‘Get protected. Get vaccinated.

Gov. Jared Polis issued his most urgent plea in months Oct. 21, asking Coloradans to get vaccinated against coronavirus in order to break a continued surge in hospitalizations that left the state with only 120 available intensive care beds.

Looking into the camera that was live streaming his news conference, Polis spoke directly to unvaccinated Coloradans, saying: “We want you here. We want you to be healthy.

Please get vaccinated.”

As of Oct. 21, more than 1,100 people were hospitalized in Colorado with confirmed cases of COVID-19, the highest number since last December. What is different this time, though, is the state has largely reopened, meaning hospitals are also filling up with victims of car accidents and other day-to-day events.

During normal times, the state’s intensive care units would operate at about 68% full, said Scott Bookman, the state health department’s COVID-19 incident commander.

Now, though, Colorado’s hospital ICUs are operating at around 90% of capacity, running the risk that they could be overwhelmed if the surge of coronavirus cases continues.

Bookman said hospitals are postponing necessary but non-emergent surgeries — preserving capacity but delaying valuable medical care to patients who need it. Polis said the state is ready to implement crisis standards of care plans if needed, a move that would authorize hospitals to prioritize who receives treatment when their capacity is overrun.

“We are nearing the capacity of our hospitals,” Polis said.

Bookman echoed that concern, saying, “The trajectory of hospitalizations continues to go up, making me even more concerned about what this is going to do to the capacity of our hospitals to be able to take care of patients.”

hospitalized with COVID-19 are unvaccinated, according to data from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. And those who are hospitalized and unvaccinated also skew younger. The average age of an unvaccinated person who is hospitalized in Colorado right now is 57, compared with an average age of 73 for the vaccinated.

In addition to urging unvaccinated people to get the shot, Polis also said older Coloradans should receive a booster shot. He cited newly released data from vaccine maker Pfizer showing that a booster shot of its vaccine was more than 95% effective at preventing symptomatic cases of COVID-19.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Oct. 20 approved booster shots for people who received the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines, to go along with a previous approval of boosters for Pfizer recipients. At press time, an expert panel at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still needed to give its OK. Pfizer booster shots have been authorized for all people ages 65 or older, along with people who have high-risk medical conditions or who

work in high-risk settings. The Moderna approval is expected to follow similar guidelines.

Boosters for Johnson & Johnson are expected to be available for all people who received the vaccine.

People with weakened immune systems are already eligible for a booster shot regardless of which vaccine they received.

The rising levels of concern in Colorado stand in contrast to what is happening in the nation at large.

Across the United States, coronavirus cases and hospitalizations are falling.

During the previous several months, while the virus’ delta variant tore through health care systems around the country, Colorado had managed to have some of the lowest hospitalization and case rates in the country. Now, Colorado has the 10th-highest infection rate and 20th-highest hospitalization rate among all states, according to The New York Times’ case tracker.

Since the beginning of October, about 20 people a day in Colorado have died with COVID-19. As recently as this summer, that number was around four or five people a day.

More than 8,000 people in Colorado

have now died due to the coronavirus.

The Oct. 21 news conference was notable for the language Polis used in hoping to prevent more deaths.

Repeatedly, he urged unvaccinated people to show care for themselves by getting the shot. Slightly less than 30% of Coloradans who are old enough to get vaccinated are not fully immunized.

“Never in my wildest imagination did I think there would be Coloradans that didn’t want to protect themselves,” Polis said, recalling the day the first vaccine doses arrived in the state.

He later added: “Show that you love yourself. Show that you support your friends and family that want you to be here for many years to come. Get protected. Get vaccinated.

Get boosted.”

United Power Helps a Mountain Town with Power The generator supports Gilpin County infrastructure

Gilpin County received a 625-kW diesel generator at the local school district campus, according to a press release by Brighton-based United Power.

“United Power is excited to partner with Gilpin County on this key project for community members adjacent to the school district cam-

pus,” stated Dean Hubbuck, United Power’s chief energy resource officer. “Completing the project before the winter season should provide security and peace of mind to the residents in the area and provide a much-needed resource in the event of an extended power interruption.”

United Power partnered with the Gilpin County Office of Emergency Management to install a generator to provide a safety upgrade for its school district in the mountain territory .

According to Gilpin County School District officials, when there was a power outage the school

contacted parents and sent students home. With the new generator, there is an option for backup power so the parents and administration can provide a safe warm site for the students and staff.

The generator can provide power to the entire school campus, including school buildings, gym facilities, bus barn, water storage, delivery systems, pumping stations and Eagles’ Nest Daycare Center. Its generator operates on a Tier 4 Diesel with an ultra-clean, low sulfur fuel with advanced education technologies which exceeds state requirements for emission levels, according

to United Power officials.

United Power and Gilpin County school district will have a ribboncutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 5, for the public to learn about the safety upgrades.

According to the company’s 2020 annual report, United Power is a rural electric cooperative, providing electric service to homes and businesses in six counties in Colorado – Boulder, Broomfield, Gilpin, Jefferson, Adams and Weld counties.

According to that report, the company served nearly 98,000 meters in those counties.

From cardiac arrest, to heartfelt meeting with first responders Grateful survivor gives thanks to those who saved his life

Demetrios Fefes is lucky to be alive. He knows it.

On a blustery October morning, Fefes, his wife, Kristen, and his two young sons, wanted everyone involved in keeping him that way, to know how truly thankful he is.

A Porsche enthusiast who loves to go fast, Fefes and a friend were putting his car through its paces at the Colorado State Patrol Track in Golden, Aug. 26.

While taking a break and sipping some water between laps, Fefes started feeling faint. He says he immediately fell face-forward into the arms of his friend. But it wasn’t a mere fainting spell — Fefes’ heart had stopped beating.

That’s not the lucky part.

But as these things go, Fefes was perhaps the luckiest man (not quite) alive. Because at the same time he collapsed, two men who would help save his life were pulled over to take a break at the exact same spot.

Dr. Brian Beezley, a retired family physician, and Paul Mueller, an ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) Specialist at Porter Hospital are (luckily for Fefes) Porsche enthusiasts too. The duo didn’t know Fefes, but they did know exactly what to do at that moment — CPR — although both agree it was a daunting task.

Beezley said he had to do CPR on a patient only one time, 30 years ago.

Mueller, who spends his days running a life-saving piece of machinery in an Intensive Care Unit, said he’s been certified in CPR for more than two decades, but in all of those years this was the first time he’s had to spring into action to try to save a life outside of a hospital setting.

For several minutes, the two administered life-saving chest compressions, keeping blood flowing through Fefes’ vital organs, helping to prevent brain damage and buying precious time until emergency responders arrived.

EMT, Joey Cinalli, and Paramedics, Timothy Holloway and Hunter Held, are the Stadium Medical ambulance crew that responded, along with Pleasant View firefighters, to the Fefes call.

Held, who drives the ambulance, said the call had initially been dispatched as a “fainting party” emergency.

It wasn’t until the ambulance crew had almost reached the spot where Fefes was being tended to by Beezley and Mueller, that they heard CPR was in progress and realized they’d be treating a cardiac arrest.

Taking over for Beezley and Mueller, and using a defibrillator to get Fefes’ heart beating again, the first responders put their years of training and experience to work as they rushed Fefes to St. Anthony Hospital.

Holloway, a veteran who served in Afghanistan, said he’s really never seen anything like the series of

events leading to Fefes’ survival.

“I know medics who’ve been on the job for 30 years that haven’t had someone they’ve worked on leave the hospital with full neurological status intact — able to live their lives as though the event never happened,” he said. “So, it’s a pretty profound reality that Demetrios is here.”

Cinalli, an army medic for seven years prior to becoming a paramedic, also served in Afghanistan.

He said pursuit of an outcome like Fefes had is the reason EMTs and paramedics train as hard as they do.

“The entire reason we do this job is to serve our community and make sure we do it right,” he said.

“The amount of work and effort and training that we’ve (Stadium Medical staff and Pleasant View Firefighters) put into this community — Demetrios is a prime example of when it all comes together perfectly.”

Fefes’ wife, Kristen, wiped tears away as she described the shock of walking into the hospital that day.

She’d gotten a call that Fefes had been taken to the hospital, but wasn’t given any details. She knew he’d been suffering from a double ear infection, and assumed his trip to the hospital had something to do with that.

When she arrived at St. Anthony and asked about her husband, she was told no one with his name had been admitted. A moment later an emergency room nurse told her there was an unidentified patient in the ER that was unable to communicate. She said at that moment, the gravity of the situation came crashing down on her.

Three days later, surgeons performed heart surgery on Fefes — a quadruple bypass that took more

than eight hours. Four days later, he was home again, reassessing his diet and exercise routines.

Fefes says making those changes has been easy so far. He knows it’s still early in the process and hopes that as time goes by, he can keep bad habits at bay. But he says there’s more to it than diet and exercise alone.

“Everyone talks about genetics and diet, but no one talks about stress,” he said. “And that’s probably the bigger killer. That’s what I’m learning from this, is the stress or anger or whatever, can make a big difference.”

If he’s taken any message from this ordeal, Fefes says it’s that it can happen to anyone, at any time. He’s got several more weeks of a 12-week rehab program to go through. But he’s already thinking about ways to pay his good fortune forward.

Fefes wants to fund, and even lead, CPR classes in the future, in hopes of seeing more outcomes like the one he had.

In case you’re wondering, meetings between first responders and people they save are quite rare. This meeting was made possible when Fefes’ insurance card was accidentally left in the ambulance that transported him to the hospital. It was found and mailed to his home, along with a note offering him the chance to meet the crew that helped save his life.

There’s that luck again.

To put it into perspective, if just one of the actions contributing to his survival hadn’t occurred that day, his luck would quite possibly, have run out and a happy day of giving thanks to all of the people who saved him, would never have happened.

Autumn event brings a fun Halloween vibe to Chatfield.

On a perfectly windy, overcast fall morning in South Jeffco, around 40 witches — and some other magical beings — but mostly witches, paddled around Chatfield Reservoir.

Why, you may ask?

Because Oct. 23 just so happened

to mark the second annual Witch Paddle.

Shequia, Tara and Honey Mashburn got in on the fun.

“It’s a candy-free, family-friendly Halloween event,” Tara Mashburn said.

Ashley Dodson, who just moved here from the Pacific Northwest, said she heard about the event on social media and loved the spirit of community the Witch Paddle fostered.

“I’ve always wanted to do one of these events,” she said. “So, when I saw it (the posting), I had to do it.”

Standing straight: New treatments for an old problem New surgical techniques mean faster recovery for scoliosis patients

Thornton’s Bailee White is a pretty typical sixth-grader who likes to swim and do gymnastics. Thanks to some new personalized treatments, she has a pretty good shot at continuing to get to enjoy both for the rest of her life.

Bailee was born with scoliosis and had been in and out of Children’s Hospital Colorado since she was born. Her pediatrician noticed something was off and recommended Bailee’s parents consult with the orthopedic department.

She was diagnosed with scoliosis – an abnormal sideways curving of the spine – before she could walk, but early on Janice White, Bailee’s mom knew she didn’t want to put her daughter in a back brace.

“We decided once she was 11-years old we were going to do surgery.

We were all excited, and Bailee was excited to have it done, too, before she went into middle school,” Janice said.

Bailee had her surgery on May 11 this year. She was back up on her feet and walking within a few hours and, a few weeks later, she was doing her favorite activities – including backbends.

“They discharged her with no restrictions. As soon as we went home, I had a checklist of the types of stretches she could do to get herself back to normal. Because she’s a child, they heal so fast and they’re so active, they do not give them any restrictions on bending,” Janice said.

The quick turnaround was due to some new methods, according to Children’s Hospital Pediatric and Orthopedic and Spine Surgeon Dr. Sumeet Garg.

“We used a brand-new technology, customizing rods for Bailee’s scoliosis, (which is) a three-dimensional curvature of the spine, “ Garg said.

“It’s an abnormal twisting or curvature. Sometimes they are born with it, but most commonly it’s developed during the adolescent years.”

Garg, who came to Children’s from St. Louis, has been a pediatric spine surgeon since 2010, said doctors are unsure just what triggers scoliosis in adolescence.

“Most kids who develop in adolescence, we don’t know why it happened,” Garg said. “There’s a word called ‘idiopathic’. It’s a kind of a generic word that is used for a lot of medical diseases. It means no known cause, so it’s called Adoles-

cent Idiopathic Scoliosis.”

But they do know that it’s best to treat children, and the younger the better. Left alone, it can be disabling to an adult.

“The reason we treat children when they’re younger is that with anything in medicine, younger kids recover faster, “ Garg said. “They have fewer complications or problems with surgery, we can get them straighter and back to a normal alignment much better than adults.

Which is why when the curves get big enough, it’s recommended to treat them.”

Preparation versus intuition The basic type of spinal surgery has been done since the 1950s but there has been a lot of development in recent years that make it safer, with better results and quicker recovery, Garg said.

“In the past, when taking care of these kids in the operating room, the metal rod that you use to realign the spine was one long rod,” Garg said. “So while in surgery they would make measurements of the area, cut the metal rods, and use metal benders to bend it into the shape to fit the patient. had to use judgment on the length and bends of the rod. It’s how it was done for years.”

But the basic methodology changed in 2020. Doctors now use a computerized simulation based on their patient’s x-rays to simulate the correction of the spine ahead of the surgery. They can create a model of what the spine should look like and what the ideal rod would be to hold that three-dimensionally improved shape.

“So instead of having to cut and bend the rod in surgery the metal is forged into that specific shape and length,” Garg said. “So in surgery, when it’s time to place that rod to straighten the child’s back, you already have it planned out (how) to pull the spine to the rod to get a three-dimensionally appropriate correction.”

Preparation beats intuition, Garg added.

“I believe by pre-planning it, we can do a better job than just intuition, using our experience and guessing in surgery.”

The rods stay in place as the child grows and are designed to provide support lifelong.

The metal rod is meant to be tissue-specific, so the surgeon chooses between two different metals, titanium, and a cobalt chrome alloy.

How patients’ scoliosis presents and what the surgeon expects to determine what metals get used.

“With a lot of medicine, and you may see this in other fields, we’re trying more to personalized surgery, so instead of one size fits all, we are trying to customize the surgery to the patient to give them a better

result,” Garg said.

For Bailee’s surgery, they used a cobalt chrome alloy, which allows for a little bit more powerful correction than titanium.

Avoiding back pain Without surgery, Bailee’s curve would have continued to worsen as she got older, even into adulthood, Garg said. Adults who have scoliosis often suffer from back pain as the curvature becomes bigger and more visually apparent.

“Their shoulders will be uneven and may develop a hump in their back, “ Garg said. “They lose selfconfidence and self-esteem. When you put those two reasons with the progressive deformity and the progressive pain – its the main reasons that families may choose to have surgery as a teenager adolescent.”

Bailee is in the sixth grade now and her favorite subjects are art and science.

“When I grow up I want to be a nurse,” she said.

“The best part about these efforts in terms of research and innovation, we are seeing our kids get back to sports quicker because it’s a big deal to have a surgery like this. It’s rewarding to see them recover and get through the hard times after surgery, but within a few weeks,” said Garg. “The families don’t have to worry anymore, it’s a sense of relief for the families. It’s joyous to see them succeeding, excelling whether its athletics, school, arts, or drama, whatever they enjoy doing, we just want to get them back to that.”

Camp Christmas moves to Lakewood Holiday magic is under construction at Heritage Belmar Park

Camp Christmas, a light-filled Holiday extravaganza, started in Aurora in 2019. Pandemic constraints forced creator Lonnie Hanzon to go virtual in 2020. But this year’s production, currently under construction at Lakewood’s Heritage Belmar Park, promises to be the biggest yet.

Billed as a “fantastical wonderland of lights, dazzling decorations, music and memorabilia,” Camp Christmas will open for business Nov. 18 and run through Jan 2, 2022.

Hanzon, an artist and storyteller, has spent nearly four decades dazzling clients like the Houston Zoo, HGTV and the State of Colorado with unexpected visual creations.

But he said the recent convergence of media forms has made the work all the more special.

“I’m happy as a clam because I’m finally in the spot where it’s storytelling — it’s truly magic work in that we use every language we can get ahold of and work really hard to try to weave good storytelling, good structure and art together,” he said.

From there you’ll head to Camp Director Lonnie’s cabin, where the semi-fictional camp director dreams up Camp Christmas magic. Campers will then make their way to Lonnie’s Vintage Cabin, featuring vintage Christmas decorations.

Hanzon said the event is designed with safety for multiple-generational families in mind.

“People that are comfortable going inside places can go into five different indoor places, but the show can also be a totally outdoors experience,” he said.

Hanzon says he stumbled onto the Lakewood location in January but getting contractual matters settled between his studio and partners, the Denver Center for Performing Arts (DCPA) and the city of Lakewood, took nearly half the year.

By June he was well into creative design for the project and his crew has been hard at work since then, trying to make the opening deadline.

“It’ll take every available minute to get it done,” he said.

He says he picked up a love for working with sugar while creating elaborate window displays for Neiman Marcus in Texas.

If you’re chilly, you’ll be able to purchase gourmet hot cocoa from Sweetsville Diner before moving on towards Dollhouse Village, a series of 20 structures built at dollhouse scale.

There’s a Winter Wish Tree complete with digital screens for “wish

playback,” while strolling under light posts adorned with vintage chenille decorations Hanzon has collected over the years.

Further down a path illuminated by thousands of lights, campers will find the Camp Lodge with electric sheep taking up residence out front.

There’s a fairy bar and a pink room, and Santa himself will be present — but you won’t see him until you’ve passed by the lightbulb tree and LED chandelier.

There’s plenty more, but some things about Christmas should remain a mystery — except the icicle laser harp — no need keeping that under wraps.

Ozone worsens along Front Range; answers elusive ‘Other areas don’t violate standards like we do’

The worst ozone year in recent history on the northern Front Range boosted pollutant violations in a rolling three-year average closely watched by the EPA, state officials said Oct. 21, though they did not offer bold new programs to combat the hazardous substance.

Twelve monitoring sites on the Front Range now have a three-year average over the EPA’s most recent 70-parts-per-billion cap for ozone, and five sites violate even the EPA’s previous looser standard of 75 parts per billion, according to annual reports made Oct. 21 to the Air Quality Control Commission by state and regional pollution officials.

Widespread Western wildfires and the smoke they shed into Colorado contributed to the ozone worsening in the northern Front Range area already in non-attainment of EPA limits, the officials said.

But they also acknowledged that the hot dry summer of 2021, which will be repeated in the future as climate change affects the West, made for terrible ozone conditions — with or without the smoke.

“Other areas don’t violate the standards like we do,” said Mike Silverstein, director of the Regional Air Quality Council, which tracks pollution and recommends policy

changes to help the Front Range meet EPA limits. “So that shows that local vehicle emissions are really what kicks us over the threshold of the standards, not what’s given to us from outside.”

The state Air Quality Control Division staff, which reports to the commission, confirmed that the northern Front Range is likely to be declared in “severe” violation of EPA ozone limits in early 2022, after

lingering in the “serious” violation category.

Changing the classification triggers more demands on the RAQC and state officials to clamp down on vehicle emissions and volatile chemicals from oil and gas operations that contribute to ozone.

Colorado continues to show progress in other key areas of EPA concern, including nitrogen oxide and volatile organic compounds that are precursors of ozone, the presentations showed. But ozone is in violation and getting worse, with many Front Range monitors registering levels higher than 80 parts per billion over the summer.

Some AQCC commissioners pressed staff and RAQC officials making the annual reports on what new measures will be taken soon to bring ozone down.

“We must own the reality that what we’re doing is simply not enough,” Commissioner Elise Jones said after the meeting. “We are failing on air quality. It’s time for us to pursue bolder solutions than we’ve considered before — like making transit free, and not allowing oil and gas fracking during the ozone season.”

Air quality officials are scheduled to make more rules cutting emissions from oil and gas production in December, and that has proven one of the most effective strategies so far, Silverstein said.

seeking federal funding for free transit on ozone alert days, which would cost millions in foregone ticket revenue, he added.

Silverstein said RAQC and others will be looking at reducing vehicle miles traveled, a key measure in trying to cut ozone pollution, by working with large warehouse centers, shopping malls or other concentrated locations for vehicle trips.

Front Range air pollution monitors can separate out pollution sources and identify which category is most promising for reducing ozone — travel by cars and light trucks is the top pollution contributor for almost every monitor, the Oct. 21 presentations showed.

Changing automobile use for employers or employees, though, has proven one of the most fraught avenues in metro Denver’s pollution control efforts. Air Pollution Control Division staff over the summer proposed requiring large employers to cut the number of commuting or work miles driven by staff, but quickly withdrew the Employee Trip Reduction Program on opposition from business and industry groups.

Silverstein noted that rebates to people who replace gas-powered lawn mowing equipment with clean electric models has also helped make a dent in afternoon ozone.

Evergreen boys soccer downed rival Conifer on the Lobos’ soccer pitch last week, 4-0. While the weather was much nicer than the nearwhiteout conditions the two teams played in during the modified 2020 season last spring, the results still favored the Cougars in the end.

Senior Landon Freeman scored thrice for Evergreen, with fellow seniors Evan Brown and Vilnis Venta added a goal and an assist respectively.

Conifer’s sophomore goalkeeper Trace Avery did the Lobos proud, stopping a withering 29 shots and a penalty kick in his 80 minutes in the box.

The rivalry game was the final regular season match for both Evergreen (7-6-2) and Conifer (1-13-1).

the football field, enjoying every moment of the game. A large man with a large voice, Poholsky had no problem calling across the field to congratulate a player on a good play.

“He didn’t need a whistle,” Evergreen assistant football coach Scott Woodward explained.

When Poholsky’s son Tommy became Evergreen’s starting quarterback, Poholsky decided to sit in the booth during games so he wouldn’t distract his son. Woodward wore a headset during games, and Poholsky constantly asked Woodward to hand the headset to a player so he could offer a word of encouragement or give advice.

Above all, coaches said Poholsky’s superpower was seeing talent in kids, becoming that player’s advocate, helping the player find the right spot to succeed and more importantly, love the game.

“To have the skill set that he had and the knowledge (of football), yet he was always willing to give it to anyone freely,” Woodward said.

Conifer assistant coach Greg Manier agreed.

“He was certainly unpretentious,” Manier said. “You would never

know how talented he was.”

Skelly added: “He didn’t know how to give a little bit. He gave everything he had.”

Woodward added that he was willing to help anyone at any time.

“If (players) couldn’t get (a skill) during practice, he would meet with kids nights and weekends,” Woodward said. “He would help kids throw, catch, run routes.”

Coaches said he could tell you that you were doing something wrong in such a way that you were happy about it because he was thoughtful about what he said.

“Players wanted to impress him,” Skelly said. “It’s a sign of a good coach to motivate players to do better. They didn’t want to disappoint him.”

A player’s coach Evergreen and Conifer football players, who got to know Coach P when they were as young as 7, said he made practices fun because of his energy and enthusiasm.

Evergreen junior Nash Carroll remembered that Coach P always wore bright white Nike Air Monarch shoes. Carroll said he would tease the coach about his shoes, guessing that Coach P had at least 15 pairs that were perfectly clean.

Coach P wasn’t shy about getting involved in practices, players said.

If the team was short a player for a drill, he was happy to step in.

They talked about the impact of Coach P contesting an official’s decision not to call a penalty because of an unsafe hit. He was ejected from the game but felt it was justified to keep his players safe. Because of the ejection, he was not allowed to coach at the subsequent playoff game, so he bought a radio set and gave one to a player, so he still could coach via radio set.

“He was beyond selfless,” Carroll said. “He had everyone’s back. He

Players and coaches are feeling the emptiness — something that won’t be filled easily.

“Not just in football,” Carroll said.

“There’s a whole piece missing in the community. It’s a gap that will not be filled.”

“He was a great man,” Conifer High School assistant football coach Doug Wolanske said. “He was taken too soon.”

ARVADA — The 2021 Class 4A Jeffco League boys soccer championship plaque had to wait a little while to find a home.

Golden had a chance Monday, Oct. 18, at the North Area Athletic Complex to clinch the conference title with a win against Evergreen.

However, the Cougars put a halt to any celebration handing the Demons their first conference blemish with a 1-1 double-overtime tie.

“Before the game we talked about ruining their night,” Evergreen senior Landon Freeman said. “I think we did that.”

Several players fell to the ground after the final horn sounded after the second overtime period the concluded the league match to start the final week of the regular season.

“Evergreen always shows up when they play Golden,” said Golden coach Larry Harding after the hard-fought 100 minutes of soccer.

“I knew it wasn’t going to be easy.

I sensed it. That is the way it has always been with Evergreen. They came prepared.”

Evergreen (7-6-2, 5-2-1 in league) got on the board first with a volleyed kick into the back of the net by junior Andrew Weiland in the 25th minute. Golden (10-2-3, 7-0-1) answered late in the first half tying the game up at 1-1 with a direct free kick by senior Zane Walsh that found the back of the net.

While both the Cougars and Demons had scoring opportunities in the second half and two 10-minute overtime periods, Evergreen goalie Ian Wormer and Golden keeper Alex Cunningham didn’t allow a goal

after halftime.

Freeman and senior Finn Stewart had Evergreen’s best chance to regain the lead in the 55th minute. An initial shot by Freeman was saved

by Cunningham, but the rebound came right to Steward who’s shot in the post and was grabbed by Cunningham at the goal-line.

“We came in to beat Golden,” said Freeman, who ended the season at the league points leader in 4A Jeffco with 12 goals and 7 assists. “The boys have been playing well lately.

It is always fun to beat Golden. We wanted to ruin their season. That was the mentality.”

While the Cougars might not have ruined the Demons season, they did force Golden to get a win or tie against Wheat Ridge (6-7-2, 4-4) coming up on Thursday, Oct. 21, Lakewood Memorial Field.

“It wasn’t meant to be,” Harding said. “It’s our first tie in league and we’ll take it from here.”

The Demons took care of business in their regular-season finale with a 1-0 win over their rivals to clinch the conference title.

The top two finishers in 4A Jeffco earn an automatic bid to the 32-team state tournament that begins next week. D’Evelyn (10-5, 7-1) will be the other automatic qualifier. The Jaguars will enter the postseason on an 8-game winning streak.

Evergreen finished 39th in the RPI standings after a 4-0 victory over Conifer on Oct. 21. Freeman had a hat-trick in what would be the Cougars’ final game of the season.

A Fast-paced Fall Finale King-Murphy, Carlson students conclude cross country season with Pumpkin Run

Local elementary school students concluded their cross country season by carrying pumpkins for 100-yard touchdowns.

Mike Patrizi, a P.E. teacher at both King-Murphy and Carlson elementary schools, created a combined cross country club at the schools.

The goal, he described, was to build camaraderie between King-Murphy and Carlson students, keep them active, and build up the local running community.

On Friday, about 40 club participants ran in the Pumpkin Run at Clear Creek High School, which was their third and final race of the season.

Students ran in three age groups, but everyone’s final stretch involved grabbing a pumpkin and carrying it to the finish line at the other end of the field. Afterward, the students got to decorate their pumpkins and take them home.

around the school and stadium, and Sawyer finished second.

While he placed in the top three at all three races this season, Sawyer said he enjoyed the Pumpkin Run the best. He enjoyed running along the berms and through the trees on the Golddigger Trail.

Now that he’s done one year of cross country as a sixth-grader, Sawyer is planning to compete in middle school as well.

King-Murphy fifth-grader Madilynn Donovan also said Friday’s race was her favorite of the two she ran this season. She placed 16th in her first race, and thought she did better on Friday. At least she got to pass someone this time, which she said was fun.

that they really enjoyed participating in the cross country club, which involved the three races and twice-aweek practice at both schools.

About 50 students from the two schools participated in the club, and Sawyer said the before-school practices were really fun in the mornings.

Eric and Alma Pennell, who served as parent volunteers for the King-Murphy cross country group, said the first few before-school practices were a little rough. However, Eric said, once students saw how much fun their friends were having running laps before school, participation increased. Plus, even though they were at school an hour early for practice, everyone was in a good mood, he continued.

Alma added: “All the kids seem super-excited (about the club).”

She and Eric said their 9-year-old son Alex loves the club, and they appreciate how it helps the students stay physically active and teaches them good sportsmanship at a young age.

“Our thanks to Mike (Patrizi); this was a great resource to have,” Eric continued. “ … Let’s keep it going every year.”

Patrizi said, overall, the inaugural cross country club “was a blast,” and he also wants to continue it next year and beyond.

“I’m stoked with how it turned out,” Patrizi continued.

He added that he’s planning similar activities later this school year to continue building that community between King-Murphy and Carlson students.

“There’s more to come,” he said.

A second life for lost luggage at DIA Airport donates forgotten bags to Denver Rescue Mission

Denver International Airport handles a massive amount of luggage every year. In 2019, the last full year before the COVID-19 pandemic, 69 million passengers traveled through the airport with bags in tow. Some of those travelers left their empty bags behind.

Sometimes people will throw away their luggage because they want to consolidate their things to save on baggage fees. Or, maybe a wheel or zipper breaks and they leave a suitcase at the airport. DIA collects whatever is left behind.

“Once we find that luggage that is clearly being abandoned — being set next to a trash can — we don’t want that just to be thrown away in a central landfill, especially when there is ... a higher and better purpose that it can go to,” said Scott Morrissey, vice president of sustainability for DIA. Enter Denver Rescue Mission.

The nonprofit organization works to create change in the lives of people experiencing homelessness in Denver. Part of its mission includes the Ministry Outreach Center, located in Denver’s Park Hill neighborhood.

“One part is the warehouse, the home of all of our supplies. Any non-cash donation comes through the warehouse and is received here, stored here, sorted out, and then distributed from here,” said Jesse Ludema, the director of the Ministry Outreach Center.

At the center, the abandoned pieces of luggage get a new purpose.

About every month or so, Denver Rescue Mission picks up a batch of empty suitcases and bags from DIA to distribute to the unhoused community it serves.

“For many people in the homeless community they have very few belongings,” said Ludema. “And so if you’re walking around and trying to get back on your feet, having something to store your possessions

in is really important.”

This particular partnership with a focus on luggage donations between DIA and Denver Rescue Mission started about three years ago. In 2018, Morrissey said the airport donated 835 pieces of luggage, and in 2019, it gave 719 pieces.

Morrissey does say in 2020, that number was much lower, likely because the number of passengers who went through DIA dropped significantly due to COVID-19.

“Not a huge amount in the context of 69 million passengers. But they are bags that can go and have a second life and support the clients of the Denver Rescue Mission,” said Morrissey.

So far in 2021 donations are still lower than at the start of the partnership, again with passenger numbers not quite at where they were pre-pandemic. But any donation can make a big difference in a person’s life. “[It is] a need that we don’t often think of. We think of food, cloth-

ing, the essentials, but something to carry that in is critically important.

So it is a need that is expressed often,” said Ludema.

And that need has grown even more in just the last year. The Metro Denver Homeless Initiative conducts a “Point in Time Count” to determine how many people are experiencing homelessness in the Denver area. This year’s count found the number of people experiencing homelessness for the first time doubled from 2020 to 2021.

“I think anyone who has worked with the homeless community here in Denver has seen the need increase for more resources, for more items just overall,” said Ludema. “It seems like we need to find a better way to help our homeless brothers and sisters in need.”

It seems now more than ever nonprofits like Denver Rescue Mission could use the help. Thankfully, Ludema says this luggage donation partnership is just one of many beneficial partnerships. Most major grocery store chains in Colorado donate leftover food, several food banks help out regularly, and different individuals or companies often come to Denver Rescue Mission with donations.

“There’s just probably hundreds of companies that may do drives every single year or twice a year,

and may say, ‘Hey, we want to get our company together and collect coats, or we want to collect hygiene products, or what is it that you need us to collect?’” said Ludema, “I’m really blown away by people’s generosity to help.”

And that’s exactly how the relationship with DIA started. At first, it was donations of unused food from the airline flight kitchens as well as some food and beverage concessions. Then it grew into this new baggage partnership.

“You can have those conversations in real time to say, you know, `We have this product, is it something that can be beneficial to people?’

And they [Denver Rescue Mission] understand what those needs are,” said Morrissey. “It’s really important for us to find those opportunities to positively contribute to the community.”

“Just all across America in our world, there’s so many problems,” said Ludema. “And so to experience generosity firsthand, and to see people really are willing to give and help is certainly very encouraging.”

The art contest encourages youth “to use their creative gifts and curiosity to explore the wonders of space and the exciting possibilities in science, technology, engineering and mathematic fields.

The contest provides a chance for students to showcase their talents, and presents an opportunity for parents, teachers and communities to spark a love of STEM in young people through the lens of space,” according to a news release.

There is no cost to enter the contest and any student between the ages of 3 and 18 are eligible.

There will be 25 winners — a first, second and third place for each of eight age categories. One artist will receive the Space Foundation Achievement Award.

Winning artwork will be displayed and shared worldwide, through contest websites and various social media platforms, as well as at the Space Foundation Headquarters and Discovery Center and at the 37th Space Symposium, which will take place April 4-7, 2022, in Colorado Springs.

Deadline to submit entries by Jan. 19, 2022.

Artwork must be submitted online by the student’s teacher, parent or legal guardian who is age 18 or older.
