overhead excited the crowd and was a perfect finale to Marshdale Elementary’s Patriot Day Recognition Ceremony.

On Sept. 10, about 30 local veterans and first responders from Evergreen, Elk Creek and Inter-Canyon fire departments and the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office joined the elementary school in its annual ceremony honoring 9/11. The guests, who arrived in fire trucks and ambulances, were welcomed with breakfast, and

the ceremony was quickly underway. The Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts proudly presented the colors and raised the flag, followed by an allschool pledge of allegiance.

Conifer High School student Stella Martin, a Marshdale alum, sang the national anthem.

Principal Zak Martin greeted first responders and students alike and was in high spirits about the celebration. He said the area was “such a great family and community of

first responders.”

The first responders and veterans introduced themselves, and many were parents of students and Marshdale Elementary alumni themselves.

Jacob Ware, Elk Creek fire chief and a Marshdale parent, said the event was key for kids to be part of, and it was important to “get together to remember those who are no SEE PATRIOTS, P9

A Life Well-Lived in the Evergreen World Sylvia Brockner, an environmental activist, educator and writer since she moved to Evergreen in 1965, passed away peacefully on Sept. 3, 2021, just a few weeks shy of her 102nd birthday.

Sylvia was the youngest of Frank and Frances Booth’s five children. Born in 1919 on their farm in Western New York State, looking out toward Lake Erie, she used to say that after her four siblings went to college, there was no money left for her.

She had taken all of the art courses that her high school offered (two) and got a job as a docent at the Buffalo Museum of Science. It was there that her raven hair, big brown eyes and stylish red slacks caught the eye of Winston William Brockner. When he asked her if she would like to go owling some night, she was smitten.

They were married in 1940 and moved to Evergreen in 1965 when Win was transferred as an accountant for General Motors. His new boss disagreed with Winston Churchill’s politics and decreed that he would call Brockner by his middle name instead of his first, and so “Bill” was born.

Sylvia and Bill founded the Evergreen Naturalists in 1968, which became Evergreen Audubon, and she helped Jefferson County Open Space acquire 319 acres of land that became Lair o’ the Bear Open Space Park that opened to the public in 1991. She was a founding member of the Mountain Area Land Trust in 1992, an organization that has conserved more than 22,000 acres within 50 miles of Evergreen.

When the Evergreen Lake House was constructed in 1993, she was instrumental in ensuring that the wetlands north of the building were not destroyed,

In 2016 she was inducted into the Jefferson County Hall of Fame for her contributions to conserving wildlife habitats in the County. In accepting that award, Sylvia observed that there is nothing that compares to being able to pass by a piece of land that has been protected from development and knowing that it will always be there.

For 45 years her weekly column, “Our Evergreen World,” published in the Canyon Courier, documented the birds and plants that make up our natural world in the area. In her series, she authored more than 2,200 articles, with each article accompanied by one of her charming original penand-ink drawings. She published two books, one in 1974 and the second in 2017 (when she was nearly 97 years old), that were plucked from the best of her newspaper columns over the years.

For 30 years, Sylvia was a licensed bird bander, helping to map the migration of birds in the area, and was also a member of the Evergreen Garden Club.

Her legacy is clearly anchored in her deep love for the outdoors, and she dedicated her life’s work to ensuring that Evergreen’s residents and visitors would forever be able to enjoy the local wildlife habitats — natural and protected from development.

Sylvia is survived by her seven nieces and nephews — Trisha Kozma of Auburn, Washington; Barbara McKee of Half Moon Bay, California; Sandra Smith of Santa Clarita, California; Sylvia Graovac of Vista, California; Rebecca Smith of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; David Brockner of West Seneca, New York, and Mark Brockner of West Falls, New York -- and their families.

A Celebration of Sylvia’s Life is planned for her birthday, Oct. 13, 2021, at the Evergreen Lake House.

October 30, 1948 - September 3, 2021 David (Dave) Rommelmann, 72, of Evergreen, Colorado passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on September 3, 2021.

Dave was born October 30, 1948 in Centralia, Illinois. He attended the two-room Lutheran school house in Ferrin, Illinois for grade school and graduated from Carlyle High School. He earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from University of Missouri Rolla (Missouri S&T).

Following graduation in 1970, he served in the US Army at Fort Baker, California. In 1971, Dave married Patti Maune. Later that same year he was deployed to Vietnam. Upon his return, he launched a career designing water/wastewater treatment plants and he and Patti were blessed with four daughters. He was affiliated with many professional organizations, including the American Water Works Association and made numerous cutting-edge contributions to his industry. One of his projects, “Water Conserve II” is still the largest water reuse project of its kind in the world 30 years later. In 2008, he was awarded an honorary professional degree from Missouri S&T for his contributions to water/ wastewater treatment. After 30 years in engineering, he pivoted to a career in Financial Planning, where he helped families manage their assets and retirement.

He earned a master’s degree in Personal Financial Planning in 2012.

Dave will be remembered as someone who approached all problems with a resolute determination

Roald Harold Flater, 95, Passed away peacefully on 8/27/21 at home in Evergreen, CO. Roald was born in Norrkoping, Sweden of American parents in 1926, raised in Norway and Sweden where his Father worked at International Harvester Co, a US corporation.

In growing up, he played tennis, sailed and skied in addition to learning 4 languages. The family registered with the American Embassy every 4 years for Visas.

Roald went to the equivalent of US High School in Sweden and at age 18 , he was drafted into the U.S. Military. After induction into the U.S. Army he was sent to Fort McClellan in Alabama, for 17 weeks of basic training as a heavy weapons crewman, then served in General George Patton’s Third Army in Europe for 1 ½ years. After the war, he went to Northwestern University and graduated in 1949 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, all the time playing Varsity Tennis, on the G.I Bill of Rights.

After University, he married his first wife, Mary Lou Hackett and raised 3 girls over 20 years, AnnCharlotte, Kathleen and Jacqueline. He started a business with his 2 brothers and eventually ended up running and owning Frontier Laundry and Equipment Company in Denver, Co. selling laundry and dry cleaning equipment and playing tennis on a National basis. In the 1970’s he got divorced and married Sheryl Groninga (Flater) from Iowa and they were together for the rest of his life.

At 35 he developed 4 Passions that he pursued vigorously until his 90th year. #1 – Powder Skiing with 1.8 million vertical feet of heli-skiing in British Columbia from 1974-1990.

Also, in Vail, Aspen and Switzerland until 90 years old. #2 – Learning to Fly – Getting his Solo Pilot License, Instrument, Commercial, Multi-engine and Seaplane Ratings and checked out in 22 different aircraft while flying over 30 years (for the love of flying) until the age of 90. Flying with wife, Sheryl, as co-pilot landing on a grass strip at her family farm in Iowa, Also Arizona and points West.

Throughout his volunteer work with Evergreen Rotary (club president 2009-2010) and WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene), he worked to ensure access to health care and vaccinations, as well as safe drinking water and sanitation worldwide. As a senior camp counselor for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), he helped young people build self-confidence and develop leadership skills. He also strove to ensure people remember those who fought for the freedom of our country through his work with the American Legion. Dave loved gardening, wood working, fixing tractors, and riding horses. Most of all, he loved to be surrounded by family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Vera (Stein) Rommelmann and his brother, Gary.

Dave is survived by his sisters Arlene and Donna, his wife Patti (Maune), four daughters: Shelley (Chris), Vanessa (Richard), Kate (Scott) and Megan (Erik) and eight grandchildren: Conner, Kera, Soren, Liam, Riordan, Will, Hadleigh and Stella.

He attended Conifer High School, Red Rocks community College and CU Boulder where he

Played competitively and won every age class singles and doubles tournaments in Colorado from 35 until 80 years old. Played on the US Team for the Osuna Cup against Mexico 8 times. Won 8 US National Championships singles and doubles (gold balls) in the different age classes and 12 Finalist Silver Balls over 50 years of playing (40-90). Won a World Championship as a member of the US National Senior Cup Team and was elected to the Colorado Tennis Hall of Fame in 2008.

His Father, Harald, was born in Norway and his Mother, Anna, was born in Sweden, and his Father came to the USA in 1885 and was Naturalized in Milwaukee County Court in 1888 to become a US Citizen and married his Mother in 1919 who then automatically became a US Citizen at that time.

Roald is survived by his wife: Sheryl Flater (Evergreen), Daughters: Ann-Charlotte Flater (John Nicoletti), Jacqueline Wood (Rich), Grandchildren: Amy Anderson (Ben), Kristi Collins (Bjorn), Austinn Wood, Anna Wood and great-grandchildren: Madelyn and Lillian Anderson.

He is preceded in death by his parents: Harald and Anna Flater, His daughter: Kathleen Johns (Jeff), and siblings: Anders, Harold and Anne-Marie Karnis.

Nathan loved to experience new places and things. We are at peace knowing his last adventure will be spending eternity in Heaven with family who went before him

NEWS BRIEFS RTD restarts bus service to Denver RTD has restarted its bus service from Evergreen and the 285 Corridor to the Federal Center and downtown Denver.

The service started after Labor Day and is available on weekdays, and a one-way ticket costs $5.25.

Masks are required on buses. Details on the route stops and times, and ticket packages are available at rtd-denver.com.

The Conifer routes leave the Pine Junction park-n-Ride at 4:52 a.m., 5:52 a.m. and 6:49 a.m., stop at the Mountain View, Aspen Park and Twin Forks park-n-Rides before heading to the Federal Center and Denver’s Civic Center. The return routes leave Civic Center station at 3:22 p.m., 4:22 p.m. and 5:22 p.m., heading to the Federal Center and then stopping at the four park-nRides.

The Evergreen routes leave the Evergreen park-n-Ride by Christ the King Catholic Church at 5:40 a.m., 6:40 a.m. and 7:40 a.m., stopping at the Bergen Park, El Rancho, Genesee, Paradise Hills and Wooly Mammoth park-n-Rides before stopping at the Federal Center and heading for Denver. The return rides leave downtown Denver at 4:02 p.m., 5:02 p.m. and 6:02 p.m., stopping at the Federal Center at the park-n-Rides.

RTD suspended bus service to Evergreen and the 285 Corridor in 2020 during the pandemic because of the lack of riders.

Intruders at Elk Creek Fire Station 3 The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is looking for six people who entered a fenced-off building at Elk Creek Fire Station 3 in Conifer around 3 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 8.

The building houses transmission equipment that allows emergency responders to quickly communicate with residents in an emergency. The intruders’ actions after breaking into the secure area resulted in a disruption to some public safety radio communications, according to a Jeffco Sheriff’s Office news release.

Security cameras captured the intruders, who have not yet been identified, and it appears to be four males and two females, the release

said.

One claim remains in Elk Creek Fire lawsuit A district court judge has dismissed four of the five claims in a lawsuit filed by Foothills Housing 1 against the Elk Creek Fire Protection District.

Judge Philip J. McNulty said in the Sept. 7 decision that he would not dismiss the fifth claim because the Elk Creek fire board’s decision to not enter into a Fire Service Expansion Agreement with Foothills was a judicial or quasi-judicial function, not a legislative decision.

McNulty said that Foothills could appeal to the courts under what is known as Rule 106, where the court can look at a decision and potentially reverses it if the court feels the government body exceeded its jurisdiction or abused its discretion.

This happens when a decision by a government body can’t be appealed.

The Fire Service Expansion Agreement would have allowed Foothills to purchase a ladder truck for Elk Creek Fire and to pay for parts of salaries for three additional firefighters. In exchange, Elk Creek would provide documentation to Jefferson County saying it would provide fire service to the 188-home development Foothills wants to build behind the Conifer Safeway.

Elk Creek said the decision was legislative, while Foothills said Elk Creek exceeded its jurisdiction by voting down the agreement 4-2, calling it “arbitrary and capricious and an abuse of Elk Creek’s discretion.”

McNulty dismissed Foothills’ request for a declaratory judgment, the breach of contract and promissory estoppel claims, and Foothills’ request that the court appoint someone to run the fire department because “Foothills was unhappy with the fire board’s decision,” calling it “frivolous and substantially groundless.” ~ Deb Hurley Brobst

Flying on birds’ wings Evergreen naturalist Sylvia Brockner dies at 101

Evergreen has lost an icon.

Sylvia Brockner, environmental activist, educator, writer and artist, died Sept. 3 at the age of 101. She was involved in many area organizations, fought for open space and won several awards for her efforts.

Just as importantly, she mentored all ages, inspiring them to observe the wonders of the natural world around them.

Her friends describe her as a voracious reader, a knitter, someone always with homemade cookies in her kitchen, brilliant, independent,

A celebration of life for Sylvia Brockner will be from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, at the Evergreen Lake House. Oct. 13 would have been her 102nd birthday.

Moving to Evergreen Sylvia and her husband, Bill Brockner — they were known as “Bill and Syl” — moved to Evergreen in 1965.

They founded the Evergreen Naturalists in 1968, which later became Evergreen Audubon.

In 1972, Sylvia began writing and illustrating “Our Evergreen World” for the Canyon Courier, an outdoors column that informed readers about a variety of birds, plants, wildflowers and animals that became a weekly staple for readers. She discontinued writing the column in 2017 after she moved to Elk Run Assisted Living, saying she wasn’t able to provide the same service to readers because she wasn’t getting out as often.

First meetings Friends talk about meeting Sylvia by attending weekly birder breakfasts with the couple or through her newspaper column.

Kathi LaTourrette said she subscribed to the Canyon Courier when she moved to Evergreen in 1977, growing to love Sylvia’s column.

“Our son, TenEyck, who was 3 years old, wanted to know how we could get bluebirds to come to our house,” LaTourrette said. “We wrote Sylvia using the Canyon Courier address, and she wrote us back with ideas, and that began our friendship. There was never a question too

simple or an observation that Sylvia wasn’t happy to hear. She enriched our children’s lives and those of so many others. Evergreen has been so fortunate to have both Sylvia and Bill in the community.”

Marilyn Rhodes chuckles when she thinks about how she met the couple.

“I’m from Oklahoma, and with the move to 7,500 feet, birds and creatures were different than what I was used to,” Rhodes explained.

“We found a dead bird, and since I was reading her column, I called (the Brockners). They invited me to bring the bird to their home on Herzman Mesa and asked me to lay it on the kitchen bar. It was a Malagasy warbler, which is a bit unusual. They were delighted that they inspected it, identified it and tried to figure out how it died.”

She noted that Sylvia brought out a tray of warm chocolate chip cookies, so they munched on milk and cookies while identifying the bird.

She called the encounter with the Brockners priceless.

Other endeavors Sylvia Robertson said Sylvia was very involved in weed awareness days at Evergreen Lake when volunteers pulled weeds in the area.

Weed days were also educational, and Sylvia sat at a table for hours, helping area residents identify plants they brought.

“She always had the answer,” Robertson said, “and everyone appreciated that so much.”

Friends talk about the amazing wildflower classes and hikes she led, noting that a hike could take hours because Sylvia stopped to examine many plants and flowers she saw, all the while educating her fellow hikers.

Bill and Syl took birders on expeditions, and they spent the days hiking or driving what Evans described as 2 mph along roads to look for birds, and the Brockners continuously told bird stories. Evans noted that sometimes the couple would argue about what they saw, going back and forth about the bird’s markings, size and more until they came to a decision

LaTourrette described the bird tree-trimming parties led by the Brockners during the holidays where pine cones with peanut butter and bird seeds became the ornaments on trees near the library, and attendees sang Christmas carols and drank hot chocolate.

A few years ago at an Audubon meeting, according to friend and former neighbor Karel Buckley, the group was reviewing bird calls for the upcoming annual Christmas Bird Count. Sylvia, in her 90s and with poor hearing, named the birds before the rest of the group.

Rhodes said in addition to the vast knowledge Sylvia imparted to others in her many decades in Evergreen, Sylvia taught her even more.

“She showed me how to grow old and how to be an active senior,” Rhodes said. “She was a good role model for sharing what she knew.

She was a teacher through and through.”

Talking about 9/11 events Evergreen man writing a book about his experience in New York City

It’s time for Stephen Venters to talk about what he did and saw on 9/11.

The Evergreen resident, who was in New York City in September 2001, feels a need to talk about his experiences for two reasons: to explain what transpired in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks that took out the Twin Towers and because he has realized that talking about that time helps him deal with the emotional toll such a traumatic experience takes.

Venters spent 90 minutes of Sept.

9 at the Evergreen Library talking about what he witnessed. At the age of 26 and after six months of traveling around the world, he stopped in New York City, taking in the sights.

He and a friend planned to go to a restaurant in one of the Twin Towers on Sept. 11 for dinner to see the city at night.

That was not to be.

“A lot of people’s stories start with the towers falling,” he said, “but mine happened much more modestly than that.”

He slept late the morning of 9/11 in a hostel on the north side of Manhattan, and after hearing what transpired earlier that morning, he

took a cab as close to Ground Zerio as he could get to look for ways to help.

“Realizing what had happened in the city I was in, I knew I had to be involved,” he said of New York City, which he had fallen in love with.

He was trained in PAD — the Patient Assessment Detail — and waited for injured victims to arrive in a massive makeshift hospital, but there weren’t many. With little to do, he made his way closer to Ground Zero.

“I so badly wanted to save a life,” he said. “I had a burning need to grab a hand and save someone, but when I got to (Ground Zero), I was amazed and dumbstruck. My fairytale dream of saving someone … evaporated in an instant.”

He marveled at the destruction, calling it hell on Earth, and he was not dressed or prepared to try to move through the wreckage. He explained that the air was filled with a black smoke that hurt people’s throats and with dust from wreckage — and there was no way to get out of it.

By 2 a.m. Sept. 12, 2001, he was finally put to work, triaging firefighters and other first responders for smoke inhalation and dehydration, or who needed eye washes and other

first-aid care.

He also spent time working in what became known as the Brooks Brothers Morgue, which was in a large Brooks Brothers clothing store near Ground Zero, looking for identifying information. His work in the morgue was the most haunting.

He left the disaster site for the hostel, feeling guilty that he didn’t do more, and returned the next day, helping organize supplies that were coming in by ferry, noting that he finally felt useful.

By Sept. 15, 2001, civilian helpers were no longer needed, but before Venters left, he joined one of the many bucket brigades sifting through the rubble looking for human remains. He participated for a short time before leaving the area for good.

He said he harbored a lot of guilt for the next 10 years because he left New York City. He returned in October 2001 to see the progress that was made, and he began writing several hundred pages in journals about his experiences.

“During those first years, I intensely read accounts of victims who were in the towers,” Venters said. “I tried to imagine what they felt, and I felt I needed to learn their stories. I think part of that was I had seen their remains. I owed them and needed to know their stories. It was some sort of survivor’s guilt.”

He has visited Ground Zero numerous times over the last two decades, noting that he always felt alone because he was simply a civilian volunteer, not part of a fire department or organization. In addition, those who weren’t in New York City at the time didn’t understand what he had been through.

Writing a book that he hopes will be published next year has helped.

“It’s helping me to talk about it,” he said. “It’s helping me to get the story out because it’s getting the story out of me.”

VOICES Decaffeinate and de-escalate

O

n any given day I will usually have one or two cups of coffee in the morning.

On those days where I have three or four, I feel a very palpable difference … I am wired. I also notice that I am a bit more anxious and a lot more impatient.

For me, I cannot drink coffee at night for this very reason. I would be up all night. We all respond differently to caffeine, some get wired like I do, and others can drink coffee all day without losing the ability to fall asleep at night.

As I look around at what is happening in our country and around the world, I feel like maybe, just maybe there are way too many overcaffeinated people out there. Violent crimes, verbal attacks, road rage, stadium brawls, random acts of violence and other assaults on humanity are occurring with greater frequency, and in some cases, an all-time high.

I am not a clinical expert, but anxiousness, fear, doubt and worry seem to be at an all-time high as well. It’s like we are going to our favorite coffee shop asking for

a double shot of impatience with extra anxiety. Or we are making our own coffee at home, maybe the double espresso anger brew with some steamed “Hurray for me and the heck with you” creamer.

And that’s just Michael Norton the coffee version.

For others it may be the caffeinated soda we drink or the highly caffeinated beverages we consume. Would we like a large or super-size cup of revenge with that burger and fries? And if we really need a jolt, maybe we pick up a shot of the five-hour hostility, you know that little bottle with a kick in it.

What could possibly be going on at a baseball game that could stir such hatred amongst the fans? And are we talking about the fans at the World Series, or parents at a Little League baseball game? Are we coming together to enjoy the great American pastime, “baseball, hot dogs and animosity pie?”

I am not sure about you, but I am seeing more and more road rage on our streets. Offended drivers attacking one another, flipping each other off, riding so close on the other one’s bumper to try an intimidate them.

It’s like they look down and see that their bitterness tank is full, and they feel compelled to try and empty it.

Wouldn’t it be better to attend a game and get an order of nachos with a side of jalapenos and good sportsmanship? Or perhaps drivethru at our favorite coffee house and ask for an iced latte with a double shot of kindness. Maybe we can look down at the gauges on our dashboard and see that our gentleness needle is right where it is supposed to be as we just let others drive on by, even letting them get in front of us.

Did you ever notice that when you scream or yell or threaten others that they now pay attention to you?

No, of course you haven’t because that never happens. What does happen is that the other person usually does one of two things, they shut down or they stand up and fight

back. And in either case, nothing gets resolved. Instead, there is just lots of shoving, pushing, name-calling, brain damage and heartache.

Look, caffeine is certainly not the problem, it was simply used for illustrative purposes. But we are acting out in ways that would suggest that we could all use a little decaf right now. A super-size decaf with two packets of “I love you” and some extra forgiveness while we refuel our hearts with understanding and patience.

Isn’t it time to pause and take a bit of the edge off? Are we sweating the small stuff, the big stuff and everything in between? Rounding third base as fourth quarter nears

he fourth quarter of the year begins soon. Investors are still on the edge of their seats concerned about potential tax law changes and any Federal Reserve policy that might spook the financial markets.

The economy is open … or is it? Pandemic concerns continue, schools are open, but some have reverted back to remote learning.

Many employees continue to work from home. No wonder it feels like we are riding an economic seesaw.

A deeper look boils down to a few distinct issues that affect investors: What will the Fed do? And will COVID-19 and its variants shut down the economy in a big way again?

Our Chief Economist, Bill Greiner, believes our current elevated inflation numbers are largely based on the partial reopening, supply chain issues and pent-up demand for goods and services. This will likely calm down over time, Greiner says. This is key for the Fed to decide whether inflation is enough of

a sustainable threat to raise interest rates in the near term.

Last year, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell launched the framework to hopefully lead us back to more normal policy at the Jackson Hole Patricia Kummer Economic Symposium. That may be slightly derailed this year based on an uneven labor market and surge of the coronavirus Delta variant, per Bloomberg News.

It may be difficult for investors to be patient and watch for meaningful opportunities, rather than secondguessing how the remainder of the year will play out. The uncertainty in employment, education, inflation and interest rates may be here for a while. The first eight months of the year produced above-average investment returns, so what lies in store for the last few months of the year?

FINANCIAL STRATEGIES

You could think of this in a baseball analogy, rounding second base and safe at third. Now, do you wait for someone else to hit the ball? Or do you steal home plate before the next out? Think of what you don’t have control over and when to take action.

Significant unknowns remain with the delta variant and how this will affect the economy in the long run. Many businesses feel they are behind by a year and a half by now, and some employees currently plan to remain home until next January. The macroeconomic picture is murky with a burgeoning federal deficit and global ramifications from China in addition to the Fed story and inflation.¹ The positives that help balance out the negatives are that we have high labor productivity, a strong money supply and positive corporate earnings. Although we expect to see housing prices and corporate earnings start to slow, the first half of the year showed enough growth

for an entire year.

Investors and their advisers should focus on the fundamentals, which show continued positive equity markets with monetary policy, GDP growth and earnings all improving. However, every good financial plan should have flexibility for when those unknowns become reality.

Make sure your plan is in order as we start the final quarter of a very unusual year. Check and see if you should adjust your taxable income, 401(k) contributions or realize capital gains or losses before year-end.

There are a lot of opportunities to take better control of your finances before there could be changes next year, in interest rates, inflation or tax policy.

Martin told students assembled in the parking lot that 20 years ago a tragic event happened in the country, and the nation was hurt.

“We recognize and understand the value of first responders,” he explained, which is why the school honors first responders each year.

After the introductions, the group took a moment of silence to remember the events of 9/11. The silence was broken by three Flight for Life helicopters, flown by Marshdale Elementary parents Curtis Wanberg, John Bernhart and Jared Winters, who circled over the school three times.

Student Aspen Winters is very familiar with helicopters because her dad was one of the pilots.

“I thought it was cool my dad was taking the time to do it,” Aspen said.

She thought the view from the ground was unique because she is usually inside the helicopter with her dad.

The flyover was a hit with the other students as well, provoking many gasps and shouts.

Student Benton Wright, who took part in the Cub Scout flag-raising ceremony, was impressed by the helicopter display.

“I was waving `hi’ to them,” he said to show his support.

As the firefighters and EMS workers left, they flashed the lights and sounded their sirens on their rigs to the delight of the students.

Community and firefighters celebrate return of Big Chili Event falling on 9/11 anniversary adds to poignancy

There was no better way for local firefighters to mark the 20th anniversary of 9/11 than by spending time with their colleagues and communities at the Big Chili Cook-Off. At least, that was how Evergreen Fire/Rescue firefighter Chris Voleck felt.

“I think there’s no better way than the American way — neighbors helping neighbors,” he said. “And that’s what we’re doing here.”

Thousands of people turned out for Saturday’s Big Chili Cook-Off, the annual event that benefits six local fire departments. The event was canceled last year because of COVID-19 but returned to Evergreen’s Buchanan Field in style.

This year’s event featured eight booths run by first responder agencies and 33 by restaurants, businesses, groups of friends and families.

Proceeds from the event are split evenly among the Elk Creek, Evergreen, Indian Hills, Inter-Canyon, North Fork and Platte Canyon fire departments. They typically use the funds, which has been as much as $7,000 each, to buy much-needed equipment.

Chief Stacee Martin and Marc Rosenberg, Indian Hills’ deputy chief, said their departments could use this year’s revenues to buy wildland firefighting resources. Meanwhile, Elk Creek’s Logistics Chief Scott Aaronson said his department might use some of it for recruiting and training.

John Gleason, Platte Canyon’s volunteer assistant chief, said Big Chili was sorely missed last year, as it always helps out the local departments tremendously. For fire departments in the rural area, budgets are tough, he explained.

Beyond the proceeds, the event is also important community-building.

It’s a rare opportunity for firefighters to see each other outside of an emergency, and for firefighters to see their community members as well, Gleason explained.

20 years of chili, honoring firefighters Big Chili started with an idea on a napkin and morphed into a huge festival

Who knew that the musings of an Evergreen man waiting for a friend to arrive at the Morrison Inn 20 years ago would evolve into the iconic Big Chili?

The man, Bob Potrykus, paged through a Canyon Courier, found a story about how thinly stretched area volunteer fire departments were after fighting wildfires such as the Hi Meadow Fire in 2000 and the Hayman Fire in 2002.

“I started literally writing on a napkin the idea of putting together a festival where I could get bands and we could have a chili cookoff,” Potrykus said of sitting in the restaurant in the summer of 2002.

The first chili cookoff was at the Evergreen Elks Lodge in September 2002 with 22 cooks and a few local bands. In the second year, it moved to the Evergreen Lake House parking lot.

By the fifth year, thousands were able to sample more than 75 chilis and listen to music from a variety of bands. That’s when Potrykus and his coordinating team turned the event over to Blue Spruce Kiwanis

and the Big Chili Inc. nonprofit which ran it for many years. The event is now its own nonprofit, dedicated soley to raising funds for area firefighters. And the rest, as they say, is history.

“Big Chili became a passion and energy that took on a life of its own,” Potrykus said. “There were a lot of dedicated people who participated in that endeavor.”

Big Chili has always been a fundraiser for local volunteer fire departments — Elk Creek, Evergreen, Indian Hills, Inter-Canyon, North Fork and Platte Canyon — that could use the money to buy equipment and other necessities of the job.

For a time, a golf tournament and an arts festival were part of the event. The Firefighter Challenge and a Kids Firefighter Challenge have been added over the years, along with an appearance by a Flight for Life helicopter. Green, red and vegetarian chili are judged along with firefighters competing in their own chili challenge, plus booth themes and costumes add to the Big Chili fun.

“If someone wanted to do something that added to the event, we’d say, `Have at it,’” said Steve Huckaby, who was on Potrykus’ organizing team.

Now in its 20th year, Big Chili is at the Buchanan Fields with headline bands, and each year, it turns more and more money over to the recipient fire departments.

ers have something akin to tunnel vision during emergencies — their only thought is to save the people, structure or land that’s in danger.

“That’s all we think about when we go on calls,” he said. “… I feel sorry for everyone that lost their lives and got sick afterwards. But if it happens again, they’d do it all over again. That’s what’s bred into firefighters.”

Rosenberg and Martin said that any of the local firefighters would’ve

done the same as their colleagues did on 9/11 because, no matter the call, time of day or weather, firefighters go where they’re needed.

“I know that these guys would do it; we’re here for each other,” Martin said, adding that mutual aid is critical among local agencies.

While Big Chili is not sanctioned by the Chili Appreciation Society International, judges participate in blind taste tests, and Schavietello rotates judges to ensure they can’t figure out whose chili they are tasting.

“It’s hard to describe the feelings that you have about those terrible losses,” Aaronson said. “… It really does hit home. But, it’s important thing to remember how it brought

us together — a common purpose, being kind and doing good by their neighbors.”

Rosenberg said that he will never forget 9/11, and just as local firefighting agencies will keep going, he hopes that Big Chili keeps going, too.

“It was a horrific tragedy that hap-

pened, but yet the country united so much after that,” he continued. “I think that’s what this event does. It unites the public with the firefighters and the firefighters with each other.”

She says she has one rule: “If you find an exceptional chili, and you don’t hand it over to me and let me taste it, you don’t get to come back to judge.”

Huckaby explained that CASI has many rules, and some of the chili cooks just wanted to make their best chili recipes.

“What I found,” Huckaby said, “was a lot of cooks have favorite family recipes. So many people wanted to make their chili, and we decided to do that” without adhering to the CASI rules.

The event awards best-chili honors to the three types of chili, with Huckaby noting that the secret to

doing well in the competition is creating a chili that is on the hot side.

“As a judge, we are looking for different things,” said Huckaby who had judged the competition for years. “When it comes to taste, they tend to stand out a little more when they are hotter.”

Huckaby noted that the community spirit that Big Chili evokes is really important with cooks, organizations and attendees coming back year after year.

Since Big Chili is always in midSeptember, people have the misconception that it is associated with the events of 9/11.

“Big Chili has always been about

our volunteer firefighters,” Schavietello said. “We want to make sure it’s about our firefighters, not a global thing.”

Schavietello added: “Big Chili is so important because our fire departments are volunteer based, the equipment is incredibly expensive, and resources are limited. If you look at the cost of equipment and the dedication that these men and women have — without it being their primary job — they demand and command our respect and resources. We need to support them.

It’s the right thing to do.”

Jeffco golfers go low at Homestead GC

LAKEWOOD — Columbine sophomore Matai Naqica had a round that every golf dreams of … bogey-free.

Naqica shot a 4-under-par, 61 on the short championship course at Homestead Golf Course on Wednesday. The junior had one birdie on his opening nine and finished his round with three birdie playing Homestead’s front-nine.

Lakewood senior Max Lange, who was 4-under-par through his first 10 holes, finished 2nd in the individual standings with a 62 at the Class 5A Jeffco League tournament. Arvada West’s sophomore Shaun Miller, juniors Yusuke Ogi and Luke Landskov, along with Lakewood senior Jace Wright all finished in a tie for 3rd with rounds of 1-under-par, 64.

Arvada West edged Columbine by two strokes in a very close team race. It was the fifth Jeffco League tournament of the season. The

conference’s final tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 14, at West Woods Golf Course in Arvada.

On the 4A side, Evergreen continued its solid play winning another team title. The Cougars top four golfers — freshmen Liam Houlihan, Ian O’Fallon, along with seniors Chase Thompson and AJ Gunn — all shot in the low 70s to defeat 2nd place Conifer by eight strokes.

Conifer senior Cade Rummell and Littleton junior Noah Abramson finished tied for the individual medalist title with both shooting 3-over-par, 68. Standley Lake senior Jack Tarman finished 3rd with a round of 69.

Evergreen can wrap-up the 4A Jeffco League title next week at West Woods, where the individual medalist will also be crowned.

Conifer softball wins again Lobos hand a loss to Arvada West

Every high school team has that one team they want to beat. For the Conifer High School softball team, that school is Arvada West. The softball team played at home against Arvada West on Sept. 8.

The team came in ready to show Arvada West their hard work, and it paid off, with a 9-3 win.

Conifer’s softball team is currently ranked second in the state in its division. The girls have also stayed undefeated,through the first six games of the season.

“I want to see us continue to come together,” senior, Katy Sims, said. “I especially want to see us continue to win more games.”

Conifer played strong defense, with dive plays from senior Ashley

Fritz and strategic base running from sophomore Kellyn Dougherty.

“Honestly, I didn’t think I was going to make that dive. I just pushed as far as I could,” Fritz stated.

“I think if I didn’t make it, they would’ve scored, and that would’ve brought their momentum up.”

The state tournament is still in the back of the Conifer girls’ minds this year. They stated previously that their goal is to make it past the first day of the state tournament, which they continue to work towards in

every game and practice.

The Conifer team plays again from Sept. 10-12 at the yearly Berthoud tournament against numerous other schools.

“For the next game, I want to make contact with the ball and keep myself in the game,” junior, Regan Pell, said. “State is the all-time goal, but for me personally, I want to make it a good year for the seniors.”

Dynamic Digger Duo Frosh footballers Logan Ginter, Cooper Needham gain valuable experience as varsity starters

Football and friends After seeing each other at sporting events for five years, the Ginter and Needham families naturally ended up sitting next to each other at the Sept. 4 game.

Evergreen’s Pam Ginter and Genesee’s Bill Needham both described how happy they were to see Logan and Cooper starting against Florence.

Bill commented how, after playing sports, weightlifting, skiing and working together, the two have become good friends off the field and a great team on it.

“They are heavy competitors with each other,” Pam said of the pair’s friendship. “They push each other.”

Beau Campbell, who coached the two for the school’s boxing club, anticipated that they will become leaders and role models in the near future, because they’re willing to take on extra tasks and they have a good rapport with others at the school.

Campbell believed their leadership will extend beyond football,

and into other sports and aspects of school-life.

When it comes to football, though, Logan and Cooper have individual goals during their high school careers, but one they share is to have a winning season as Golddiggers.

Beyond that, the two want to play college football together.

Future foes of Clear Creek’s football team should prepare for trouble, and make it double, because freshmen Logan Ginter and Cooper Needham have arrived on the varsity scene.

During the Sept. 4 home opener against Florence, the Golddiggers were down 13 players because of injuries and COVID-19 quarantine protocols.

So, Logan and Cooper had their first starts in varsity football, as running back and quarterback, respectively.

The two have been friends since fourth grade, and have played sports and worked summer jobs together.

In middle school football, they started learning how to predict what the other was going to do on the field.

On Sept. 4, that dynamic was thrown off by the freshmen duo’s relative inexperience and the Huskies’ crushing defense. The Golddiggers had missed blocks, tackles and handoffs, which led to fumbles, interceptions and — ultimately — a 71-0 win for Florence.

But, the game was valuable learning experience for all the underclassmen.

Coach Danion Baca felt the Golddiggers did OK considering that they had nine freshmen on the field and that Florence is one of the topranked teams in the state.

Logan and Cooper described how they missed handoffs, ran the wrong routes on a few plays, and overall didn’t communicate like they should’ve. They plan to improve on these things ahead of Friday’s homecoming game, where they both anticipate playing time although maybe elsewhere on the field.

While Logan and Cooper had their individual mistakes during the Florence game, Baca commented that they’re already becoming leaders among the underclassmen.

The new bleachers at Conifer High School installed by the Conifer Lobos Unified Boosters are used at the first football game of the season.

In early July, trenches were dug so volunteers could install retaining walls to anchor the seats.

Volunteers put gravel on both sides of the retaining walls. They put in long hours Thursdays through Sundays for two months to make the bleachers a reality.

“The fact that we will have these incredible bleachers for fans and our guests and the band to sit in and enjoy the game is amazing,” Conifer principal Wes Paxton said.

(The boosters, known as CLUB) are giving back to the school, but to give up that much time for the school is incredible. This is a massive project, a legacy project for years to come.”

we signed on for. If we had hired someone to do the work, we’d be even more in debt.”

Butler estimated that CLUB raised $90,000 for the bleachers with the entire project including installation estimated to cost $400,000. She said CLUB was indebted to all of the volunteers who helped make the project possible and the businesses who generously donated time and materials, including Elk Country Fence for putting in the final fencing at the last minute, so the bleachers would pass the county inspection.

CLUB bought used bleachers from a NASCAR track, both saving the boosters money and recycling the seats. Plus they are safer and ADA accessible.

“It was an economic solution,” CLUB secretary Katie Bartojay said.

“We could have easily spent $300,000 to $400,000 for new bleachers.”

Those who were hard at work included parents who don’t have students at Conifer High School, but they said their children eventually would be there and would be able to enjoy the beautiful field with its

“I have younger kids,” said Dual Schneider, CLUB vice president.

“Eventually I will have kids (attending CHS), so this work is important.”

Bartojay, who has a kindergartner, said it’s been wonderful to see the school’s sports complex grow.

Junior Noah Hartmann and sophomore Connor Harrington worked hard to help install the bleachers.

They said new bleachers would add to team spirit and bring more people to games.

Butler says it’s a great feeling to see people sitting on the bleachers after all of the hard work.

For Conifer Athletic Director Eric Kragel, a beautiful, well-equipped stadium hopefully will mean more home games for lacrosse, football and soccer.

“We can enjoy our beautiful facilities,” he said, “and show off Conifer High School.”

The American flag flew high above the red rocks Sept. 11, as the notes from “Amazing Grace” rang out from the bagpipes and drums below. Twelve hundred firefighters and community members stood in silence before ascending the ramp into Red Rocks Amphitheater to begin the Colorado 9/11 Stair Climb — a climb of 110 stories in honor of the firefighters who died on Sept. 11, 2001.

“It’s been 20 years since September 11, 2001 and so this year is extra special because last year we didn’t have a climb due to the pandemic,” said Shawn Duncan, captain at West Metro Fire and coordinator of the Colorado 9/11 Stair Climb. “So the fact that we can get together and climb in person today and remember the 343 firefighters that we lost and 3,000 Americans 20 years ago is huge.”

This years event was capped at 1,200 registrants plus children to allow for social distancing. In the past, the event has hosted about 4,000 participants.

“Looking out in the crowd, there’s some of you here that were too young to remember or weren’t even born yet,” Duncan said before the climb. “So it’s really meaningful to me and all us firefighters that you’re here to remember. We made a promise to never forget 20 years ago and

this is how we keep that promise.”

One of those participants that wasn’t born yet is Adeline Robinson, 17. Robinson is in the firefighter training program at Warren Tech.

She said even though 9/11 happened before she was born, it’s still important to her to honor the firefighters and show respect for the profession she is training for.

While there was no official in-person event in 2020, some firefighters like Raul Alvarez, with Timberline Fire Protection District, climbed anyway.

“We did it last year when nobody was here because of Covid,” Alvarez said. “We still came up and did our own. There were still a couple of firefighters here. I like doing this just the memorial of fellow firefighters that have passed and everybody, the victims. That’s why I walk. Just to memorialize them.”

For some, the event has become about more than just remembering the firefighters lost on 9/11.

“It’s become about everything; remembering everybody and all the people that are special to us,” said Mike Simons, of West Metro Fire.

Simons climbed this year in honor of Zach Lewis, a young firefighter with Rattlesnake Fire, who died in as accident recently.

“He was always up here climbing with us and he was a young kid who had a great future ahead of him and he died tragically, so he climbs with me today,” Simons said, in reference to the photo of Lewis tucked into his helmet.

On Saturday, about 50 people attended the 9/11 remembrance ceremony, hosted by the Elks Lodge and the Clear Creek County Veterans Coalition.

The coalition initially planned a silent parade down Miner Street, but canceled it after the city instituted too many restrictions. So, the coalition instead hosted a remembrance ceremony at the lodge.

The honor guard members from American Legion Post 2001 of Evergreen gave a 21-gun salute and recent Clear Creek High School graduate Campbell Houston played “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes.

The program reflected on those lost on 9/11, the 105 Coloradans who died fighting in the War On Terror, and the personal impact of these events on the attendees.

“Everyone has a story from that day,” Matthew said, inviting attendees to share their personal stories.

Matthew shared her experience at Holloman Air Force Base, and how she made several friendships with people across the world in the wake of 9/11. She commented how the terrorist attacks were meant to destabilize the United States, but instead only strengthened it.

Eddy recalled how he was at work, and felt helpless as he heard and saw the news.

“The rage is still there,” he said.

Buseck, the police chief of Idaho Springs, recalled being out of the country, visiting his brother, on 9/11.

He told the story of being in the airport on his trip home and reading the coverage in “Time” magazine, saying he didn’t know most of the stories because of the lack of news where he was traveling.

who’ve served in the military or as emergency responders, saying, “Thank you for what you do and for what you stand for.”

Huffman, a coalition member and Vietnam veteran who served in the U.S. Air Force, said he was on his computer at work when he saw a picture of the World Trade Center on fire.

Huffman shared Matthew’s sentiments that 9/11 was tragic but ultimately made the United States a stronger nation.

“Everybody rushed in, to see what

they could to make a difference … to see what they could do to help,” he said of those who were at the epicenter of the attacks.

Stelzer, the commander for American Legion Post 2001 and honor guard captain, recalled how he and all his coworkers hung their heads as they watched the news coverage that day.

“We couldn’t believe it was happening,” he said.

While Americans said in the aftermath that they would never forget what happened, the U.S. Army veteran felt that things went back to normal relatively quickly. Stelzer wanted everyone to remember 9/11, saying, “If you don’t remember things, you don’t learn from them.”

World Trade Center steel is part of new 9/11 memorial near DIA Speakers encouraged Americans to never forget the day

On a small field just behind the garage doors at Denver Fire Department’s House 35 on E. 75th Avenue sits a mangled piece of steel. Recovered from the World Trade Center, the worn piece of metal represents incredible loss.

Installed this summer, 20 years after the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, this is now a permanent location for reflection of the emotions from that tragic day.

“9/11 are numbers that are forever seared into our consciousness. We hear that combination of numbers and are instantly transported back to that day. We recall where we were, who we were with, what we were doing. And that abrupt interruption,” said Mary Dulacki, the chief deputy executive director for Denver’s Department of Safety.

On Sept. 10, the eve of the 20th anniversary of the attacks of Sept. 11, Denver International Airport, the Denver Fire Department, the Denver Police Department and the Denver Department of Public Safety dedicated a 9/11 memorial to honor the

fallen civilians and first responders.

“On this infamous day, four separate planes were hijacked and intentionally crashed — one into the Pentagon, one into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and two into the World Trade Center, killing nearly 3,000 innocent people on one of the worst days in our history,” said Denver Fire Chief Desmond Fulton.

Standing in front of the memorial, DIA’s CEO, Phil Washington, brought focus to the heroes from that day.

“It changed not just the aviation industry forever, but it changed this country forever. On that horrific day 20 years ago we saw the heroic

efforts from emergency responders: police, fire, paramedics. We also saw such effort from airline employees, passengers and so many others,” Washington said.

The piece of steel was donated by the Counterterrorism Education Learning Lab (CELL), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the prevention of terrorism through education, empowerment and engagement.

The ceremony included a moment of silence, a solemn song led by the sound of bagpipes and the laying of two wreaths. It also paid honor to lives lost in the years since 9/11.

“Over the last 20 years, the United

States as lost an additional 7,072 people fighting evil that visited New York on that Tuesday morning. This includes the 13 lives that were lost in Kabul just a few weeks ago, rescuing Americans and those fleeing Afghanistan,” said Denver Police Department Commander Mark Chuck.

Many speakers encouraged Americans to never forget the significance of this day – but also to keep looking forward with a commitment to improved safety and performance of first responders.

“In honor of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and those who responded to the unthinkable 20 years ago, let us remember the spirit of resilience that we exhibited so brilliantly after that unimaginative tragedy,” added Dulacki. “Let us unite again to address what often appear as insurmountable challenges, but which we know we can handle.”

It is a long way from home — nearly 1,800 miles — but this piece of steel has found purpose in the heart of Colorado, forever a reminder of a nation’s pain, gratitude, and resilience.

An army of Alfa Romeos stopped at Marshdale Burger Co. on Sept.

4, a lunch gathering place for the drivers attending the Italian luxury car’s national convention in Colorado Springs.

About 20 of the high-performance vehicles made their way from Longmont over the Peak to Peak Highway and through Evergreen, stopping in Marshdale before heading through Deckers and Woodland Park before returning to Colorado Springs.

The restaurant was a place to have

a good meal with available parking for the vintage cars, and it was right on the driving route, according to Judy Page of Evergreen, who helped organize the drive.

Though, “it’s like herding Italian cats,” she said as she stood outside the restaurant, directing the cars into the parking lot.

David Richichi, co-owner of Marshdale Burger Co., was excited that Page and her husband Michael Whitehouse asked if the restaurant could host the group.

“I’m a huge racing fan,” he said.

“To be around 20 of these cars (is) pretty fan-boyish. We are also pretty excited they chose to support a new local business.”

The car club spent Labor Day weekend enjoying the sights in Colorado before the convention Sept. 7-12 in Colorado Springs.

CAE’s Summerfest full of Labor Day weekend fun

Artist Mark Mahorney of Kremmling was hard at work at his booth at Summerfest on Sept. 5.

The wood carver was creating a portrait of a Native American on beetle-kill pine he had charred.

He used a tiny belt sander to remove the char, using a photo from the 1800s as a guide.

This was Mahorney’s first time at Summerfest, the two-day art and music festival sponsored by Center for the Arts Evergreen.

Several people stopped by his booth to admire his work and to ask about his creations.

The 41st annual event brought 70 artists and crafters to Buchanan Fields to show their work. The artwork was as diverse as the artists themselves — from photography and paintings to jewelry and clothing to candles and functional art.

Band Kamp was rocking Sunday afternoon as a backdrop to the children’s area, sponsor booths, and food and drink providers, in addition to the artists’ booths.

Debbie Valdez of Frederick makes wire-wrapped jewelry as part of Howlin’ Coyote Jewelry Design. Her work incorporates a Southwest style and a variety of stones for one-of-a-kind functional art.

While she displays her work at several mountain shows, this was her first time at Summerfest, and

she noted that people were happy and friendly as they went from booth to booth.

New Mexico fused-glass artist Carol Goode also creates functional art, but hers are for home use.

She was especially proud of her fused-glass lazy Susans. She was happy that people were spending time together again, and she hoped her functional art might help inspire people who are entertaining family and friends.

Goode has been a fused-glass artist for 20 years, and she attends three fairs each summer, though this was her first time at Summerfest.

Center for the Arts Evergreen’s Executive Director Lisa Nierenberg said Summerfest wouldn’t happen without the many volunteers, noting that nearly 4,500 people attended the two-day event.

“We are so grateful to the com-

munity for supporting CAE, artists and local musicians,” she said.

Fashion rocks in rocky times Pandemic, concerns about sustainability shape style trends

Momentous events are often a force in shaping fashion trends and industry standards.

Locally, Denver metro area fashion gurus say they are seeing new trends amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and as environmental sustainability is increasingly grabbing consumers’ attention.

A resurgence of ‘90s style, and retro vibes. Sparkles and sequins. Bold colors, and patterns galore. Also, an emphasis on individual style rather than fitting in a box, body positivity and sustainable fashion.

Genesis Gomez, a Westminsterbased model, like many accrued a collection of loungewear when the

pandemic first struck.

“I had my daytime pajamas, and my nighttime pajamas,” she said.

“I have a whole slipper collection now.”

More recently, she switches it up.

Some days she’s back to wearing professional clothing — a blazer and nice shirt — but not every day. With a longtime penchant for ‘70s style, Gomez is also embracing that trend lately, throwing on oversized sunglasses and bellbottom jeans, styled with a sleek middle part and natural makeup.

“Embracing the oranges, greens, blues, tie-dye,” she said. “I’m big on the ‘70s look these days.”

Interviewed as the model prepared to walk shows in New York Fashion Week, Sept. 8-12, she said she was most heartened to see people focusing on being themselves,.

“Last year we had to do a quick turnaround and worked with a new platform to create an online viewing experience,” said Corinne Hara, festival director. “Knowing the platform like we do makes this year’s festival much easier, but understanding how people watch online with all the flexibility it provides is the big change.”

The 18th annual Vail Film Festival runs from Thursday, Sept. 23 through Sunday, Sept. 26. Films will be streaming on Eventive’s virtual platform, which allows viewers to platform view their selected films on Roku, AppleTV or their computer or mobile device.

This year’s event continues the organization’s mission of fostering “independent film through film screenings, panels, workshops, networking events and educational projects,” with a particular focus on female filmmakers. With 80 films available to view, this is the festival’s most international lineup yet, with entries coming in from all over the world, including New Zealand,

a world where people are just really embracing what fits them best,” she said.

Amanda Crazybear is another model who works throughout the Denver metro area. She’s studied fashion history and worked in the industry for 10 years.

“I feel like everybody has had just a rough time and kind of got lost,” Crazybear said of the pandemic.

“Now everybody is kind of emerging.”

She’s watching her two teenage daughters join the revival of ‘90s

“If you think of creativity, so often it’s fueled by personal strife and triumph.

This year we’ve had some incredible submissions because I think the pandemic allowed people more time to Clarke Reader be creative,” Hara said. “As people have become more comfortable with virtual content, that has encouraged more submissions from around the world.”

One of the festival’s strongest areas is its documentary category, and this year is no exception. Some highlights include “Kiss the Ground,” which features famous faces like Woody Harrelson and Gisele Bündchen discussing the importance of regenerating the world’s soils, and “D-REP: Fight for Life.” This film tells the story of Dave Repsher, a Summit County Flight for Life nurse, who survived a helicopter crash in July 2015.

It is also important for festival organizers to keep alive the connection and networking that traditionally accompanies film festivals — something they’re aiming to do with question-and-answer sessions, panels, a live award ceremony on the 26th and other social-mediadriven options.

The push for the personal element really gets to the heart of what

makes a film festival special — something Vail organizers understand clearly.

“We’re always excited for filmmakers to spend time in town, so we’re excited to see interactions on social media and host a virtual festival lounge, since that’s the closest we can get to mirroring in person,” Hara said. “We have great programming by great filmmakers, and we know sharing everyone’s point of view enriches the conversations.”

Darlene C. Ritz is the Denverbased fashion designer behind DCR Studios. She has a doctorate in education and a passion for designing for every body type.

For several years there has been a shift away from homogenous trends throughout society toward more individual expression, she said, and the pandemic’s onset expedited that.

People were home more, browsing the internet, on their phones and online shopping.

For many, shopping became a pastime. Anything they wanted was available with the click of a button, and so too was fashion information, she said.

That’s helped lead to consumers becoming more educated, and as a result making a return to slow fashion and sustainable fashion, she said. They’re deciding to waste less, as are designers. They are purchasing higher-quality items in order to

American talking sticks, fur pelts and herbal medicines were all part of the annual Living History Days last weekend at Staunton State Park.

Volunteers from the park and Colorado Parks & Wildlife, some dressed in late 1800s clothing, explained to visitors on Sept. 11 what it was like to live in that time period. A treasure hunt and a hayride helped lead participants to historical cabins once

lived in by Archibald and Rachael Staunton. Their 1,720-acre ranch is now Staunton State Park, and the cabins, which were built in 1918, are getting repairs thanks to a Historicorps grant.

At the visitors center, representatives of area historical societies and authors of books about the area’s history regaled people with stories of the area.

Michelle Houghton, a CPW volun-

teer, taught visitors about feathers and fashion. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was popular for women to wear feathers or entire birds on their hats, and more than 5 million birds died yearly to adorn women’s clothing. However, women stepped in to protect birds, leading to the Audubon Society and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.

The operations, which she demonstrated on a stuffed animal named Raymond the marmot, would attempt to stop the body from using the diseased lung, and she said someone with tuberculosis back then had a 50/50 chance of living.

Jaclen DeLozier, 13, and her mom Karrie, who live in Lakewood, came

to Staunton State Park because it was Girl Scouts Love State Parks weekend. They didn’t know Living History Days was taking place, and they were enjoying learning about life at the turn of the 20th century.

Randie Boldra, who has been volunteering at Staunton for years, said Living History Days was important to teach younger generations about nature and the past.

“The next generation needs to know about this,” she said.

Recreation center shuttered again

Well, that certainly didn’t last long. My town’s recreation center opened last week for indoor walking only -- no classes, no basketball, no anything else -- then shut down again just as quickly.

Public Notices Legal Ad No.: CC444587 First Publication: September 15, 2021 Last Publication: September 15, 2021 Publisher: Canyon Courier NOTICE OF FINAL SETTLEMENT FOR COLLABORATIVE CARE CENTER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN in accordance with the notice provisions contained in § 38-26-107, C.R.S., the CLEAR CREEK BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS has established October 5, 2021 at 9:50 a.m. at the Board of County Commissioners hearing room, located at 405 Argentine Street, Georgetown, Colorado, as the date, time and place of final settlement with Alliance Construction Solutions LLC, for County Administration, Collaborative Care Center, County of Clear Creek, State of Colorado. Any person, co-partnership, association of persons, company or corporation that has furnished labor, materials, sustenance, or other supplies used or consumed by such contractor or his or her subcontractor in or about the performance of the work contracted to be done or that supplied laborers, rental machinery, tools, or equipment to the extent used in the prosecution of the work, whose claim therefore has not been paid by the contractor or subcontractor, at any time up to and including the time of final settlement for work contracted to be done, may file a verified statement of the amount due and unpaid on account of such claim with the Clear Creek Board of County Commissioners, Clear Creek County, P.O. Box 2000, 405 Argentine Street, Georgetown, Colorado 80444. Failure to file such verified statement or claim prior to final settlement will release the County and its employees and agents from any and all liability for such claim and for making final payment to said contractor.
