Councilors will see a new version of an ordinance allowing restricted marijuana sales in Brighton city limits in February that expands the area where the stories can be and allows them in clusters.

Councilors approved a marijuana sales ordinance on the first reading in October, but tabled the second reading on the ordinance until the new City Council was elected and had begun work.

That new council had its first opportunity to review that ordinance at the Jan. 23 study session. They are scheduled to vote on it at their Feb. 6 meeting.

Martinez said his staff had talked with marijuana retailers after the first reading and they recommended some changes.

“We are going to incorporate some of these changes, some of the feedback we received,” Martinez said.

“They are pretty comprehensive.”

Most of the language changes determine how the stores will operate, the license application process and what kind of reports they need to make to the city. The ordinance still allows four stores in Brighton and two of them would be reserved for so-called “social equity licensees.”

Those are people who have lived in economically disadvantaged areas for 15 years or have been jailed for cannabis-related offenses.

But the biggest changes have to do with where the stories can be located.

The October version only allowed marijuana sales in the city’s C3 zone, which allows light commercial or light industrial uses. The latest version allows them in the C2 and I-1 zones.

“We felt that limiting them to the C3 zone would severely limit the amount of operations we could potentially have,” Martinez said. “If we want to allow four stores in the community, we really felt that we needed to open them up to a larger

zoning district area.”

The old version required stores to be at least 1,500 feet away from each other to keep them from clustering.

But Martinez said discussions with marijuana retailers and police said that might not be a bad thing.

“In our conversation with the industry, it came out that there is a benefit to having them co-located, next to each other,” Martinez said.

“We know it could create a district, I know. But from conversations with our public safety staff, there is a benefit to having all off our marijuana stores together. It’s easier to monitor and police, but we just felt that removing that restriction would be beneficial.”

The stores would not be allowed in the downtown area or in Brighton’s zoned planned development areas, such as shopping malls or other special areas. Stores could only be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and would need to city license which would be reviewed by a licensing authority, likely the city’s current Alcohol licensing board.

Councilor Jim Snyder, one of the councilors elected in November, took issue with the opening hours restriction.

“It seems to me that this is prejudicial,” Snyder said. “Liquor stores, they have to close at midnight and they are in kind of a competitive in-

dustry,” he said. “It just seems prejudicial to tell one industry it can stay open past 9 p.m. and one you can’t.”

Snyder said he doesn’t drink alcohol or smoke marijuana.

“So I don’t have a dog in this fight,” he said. “We can be moral examples but I don’t think we are the moral police and if we are going to allow this industry, we have to allow them to compete fairly.”

Public Safety

Councilors in October also favored setting aside the marijuana sales revenues for police and public safety but councilors backed off of that idea at the Jan. 23 meeting.

Councilor Chris Fiedler argued against earmarking the money for police, saying the new revenue would go into the general fund and be available to the police anyway.

“They ( marijuana retailers) also have a concern about tying public safety to marijuana sales because it makes it seem like a sin. The assumption is that this will create public safety issues. This may surprise you, but in my experience, there is no increase in crime where they’ve legalized pot sales because it’s been here all along, legally or illegally, and it always has been.”

juana revenues. And City Manager Martinez said he’s not expecting marijuana sales to generate much revenue.

“I don’t want there to be a false expectation,” Martinez said. “This isn’t going to be a significant windfall for the community. Our estimates are, based on what we guess we can get, somewhere between $200,000 and $500,000. We really don’t know what it’s going to bring in.”

How Much Did Home Sales Fall in 2022 and 2023, and Was It a Record Drop?

At right is a chart showing the number of residential sales within a 25-mile radius of downtown Denver over the past 10 years. I was inspired to do this research because I read in an email newsletter that the nationwide drop for 2023 versus 2022 was the biggest drop in 30 years. As you can see, however, here in the Denver metro area, the 2023 drop in sales was the biggest drop since… the prior year!

Moreover, the drop in 2022 was only so big because the increase during the first full year of Covid was so big.

As I said, my statistics were for the area within 25 miles of downtown Denver, which I consider to be a reasonable definition of “metro Denver.” The Market Trends Committee of the Denver Metro Association of Realtors uses the same data source as me, namely REcolorado.com, but they define “metro Denver” as 11 counties, many of which extend far from downtown Denver. Here’s what the same chart looks like using those criteria: (11-County Metro)

the metro area distort the figures enough to paint a less than accurate picture of the Denver metro market.

I’ve added a third chart above top right, this time using the full REcolorado database, which covers much of the state. It’s common to refer to REcolorado as the “Denver MLS,” but it can and does include listings from all over the state. There are other MLSs in the state, but if a listing agent wants to reach Denver buyers, as he or she should, then entering those farflung listings on REcolorado is a must.

The third chart tells an important story. If you recall the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, workers throughout the state (and country) were forced to work

from home. When it looked like the pandemic was going to linger, many of those workers decided that working at home could be a long-term arrangement.

Moreover, they wanted to move somewhere that was less populated, so they wouldn’t be rubbing shoulders with possibly infected neighbors. That caused a huge surge in out-migration from Denver, which is best reflected in the third chart, where the slow market in rural listings pulled down the statewide average — until the pandemic. Looked at statewide, you’d think that the big drop in 2023 sales was more of a return to pre-pandemic levels than an absolute drop — which it certainly was if looked at on the metro Denver level.

REcolorado has released the rules for a new kind of listing called “Private Exclusive.” It replaces an earlier status called “Office Exclusive,” which made listings by individual brokers only visible to fellow agents in their office, which I felt discriminated against brokerages with fewer agents, like Golden Real Estate.

many sellers wanting to limit the exposure of their listing so drastically. When a listing is active on the MLS, it is displayed not only on REcolorado and other regional MLSs, it is displayed on Zillow, Redfin and every other consumer website, including the websites of virtually every brokerage including Re/Max, Coldwell Banker, Century 21 — and Golden Real Estate.

The one likely application for this non-public status would be if the home is in a multi-million dollar neighborhood and is owned by a sports star or celebrity who values his or her privacy, and the listing agent has sold scores of such homes and has a huge personal database of prospective buyers, including other celebrities and ultra-rich persons.

The motivation of our MLS to create this new status was to maximize the accuracy of its sold database.

When a home is sold off-MLS or as a pocket listing, it’s less likely to be posted on the MLS once it has sold, thereby limiting its visibility to appraisers and other agents looking for comparable sales. When a private exclusive listing is sold, it must be updated with the sold price and terms and is then fully visible as a “closed” listing for all to see, including on those consumer websites like Zillow, homes.com and others.

Large brokerages still have an advantage over us smaller brokerages, because other agents within the brokerage can search for and find those listings. They have the same sharing limitations as the listing broker.

The new status is intended for sellers who desire a higher level of privacy, by not publicizing widely that they are selling their home and for how much. Under this status, the listing agent cannot put a sign in front of the house and can only promote the listing one-onone to other agents or to prospective buyers in his or her sphere of influence. That means that the listing may not be promoted on social media or be mass emailed, and will not be displayed on the MLS or consumer-facing websites like Zillow until it has sold.

The problem with “private exclusive,” of course, is that it severely limits the number of potential buyers who will see it. The advantage for the listing agent of off-MLS listings or “pocket listings” is that he or she is more likely to “double-end” the sale and not have to give half his listing commission to the buyer’s agent.

That’s why the listing agent is required to affirm during the listing entry process that the seller requested keeping the listing private, and that that the seller was informed of the implications of not being displayed on the full MLS. With such an affirmation, if valid, it’s hard to imagine

Republicans square off Race for 4th congressional seat brings feisty forum

A long list of Republican candidates seeking to replace U.S. Rep. Ken Buck in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District sparred over their experience while talking about immigration, abortion and the economy at a raucous debate.

The debate, hosted by the Republican Women of Weld in Fort Lupton, kicked off what has already been a lively primary season marked by attacks and posturing.

Nine Republicans who are campaigning for the 4th District seat, which is opening because Buck is retiring, shared the stage.

Candidates voiced their support for former President Donald Trump, touted how their experiences made them the best fit for the job, and didn’t resist taking shots at one another.

U.S. Rep Lauren Boebert faced questions from opponents about her decision not to run for reelection to the 3rd District on the Western Slope and instead switch to the 4th District. At one point, state Rep. Mike Lynch asked her to define the term “carpetbagger.”

Boebert said at the Jan. 25 forum

that she has moved to Weld County, adding that she and her children needed a change of setting after her recent divorce.

“I’ve been very clear that this is a fresh start for my family and myself,” Boebert said. “The crops may be different in Colorado’s 4th District, but the values are not.”

She also asserted that her move ensures Republicans will win both districts.

The 4th District leans 27 points in the GOP’s favor, according to a nonpartisan analysis of election results from the last two presidential elections by staffers for the Colorado legislature.

And, according to the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office, there are 187,011 Republicans (35%) in the 4th District and 90,110 Democrats (17%). Unaffiliated voters outnumber either party with 243,598 registered voters in the district. The total active number of voters in the district is 529,393.

“We have an opportunity now to absolutely secure that seat and keep it red,” Boebert said, adding that she was heavily targeted by Democratic interests. “The Republicans in the 3rd District will now have a fair fight against their opponents rather than Hollywood elitists and dark money groups pouring into the district.”

Lynch stepped down from his position as the state’s House minority leader on Jan. 24 after The Denver Post brought the DUI charge to light.

At the debate, Lynch addressed the matter, saying he is asking for forgiveness and putting it behind him. He said he could represent people from a variety of life experiences and was working to overcome his mistake.

“It’s not how you get knocked down, it’s how you get back up on your feet, learn from it and move forward,” he said.

Boebert also poked fun at Peter Yu for having unsuccessfully campaigned in Colorado’s 2nd District in 2018 and for the U.S. Senate in 2022.

The second-term congresswoman touted her work helping to pass the Pueblo Jobs Act and working to oust former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy “Everyone will talk like a Freedom Caucus member, but I’m the only one who governs as a Freedom Caucus member,” Boebert said.

The House Freedom Caucus is an allied group of representatives advocating for far-right policies.

“I’ve been very responsible with my legislative duties in this majority,” she added.

Other candidates pushed back on Boebert’s claim that she is the only one with “proven experience.”

Former state Sen. Jerry Sonnenberg, pointed to his history serving the residents of the Eastern Plains and knowledge of agriculture, water and cost of living issues.

“This district needs somebody who understands those issues and has grown up with those issues,” he said.

Ted Harvey, a former state senator from Highlands Ranch, highlighted his work on a political action committee that funds proTrump candidates, as well as his history fighting for pro-life legislation. Harvey helped to pass the only abortion restriction on record in Colorado.

“There’s nobody up here that has a more consistent record of fighting

for conservative values,” he said.

Deborah Flora, a conservative radio host from Highlands Ranch, emphasized her work in pro-life and parent’s rights spaces.

Douglas County is the most populous county in the district and has the most registered voters. In addition to Flora and Harvey, two other candidates have ties to the area: Trent Leisy and Chris Phelen.

“I’m not a career politician looking for my next job or my next paycheck, I’m a citizen servant,” Flora said.

When asked about their top priorities, all of the candidates said some variation of dealing with immigration and closing the border or addressing the economy.

Leisy and Harvey said they would push to deport all illegal immigrants who entered the country within the past few years, while Colorado Rep. Richard Holtorf advocated for deporting all Middle Eastern men.

Leisy and Boebert were the only two candidates to raise their hands when asked if they believed the 2020 election was stolen from former President Trump.

All of the candidates said they would vote for Trump in 2024.

In a recent interview with CNN, Buck cited lies over the 2020 election as one reason he is retiring and called it a challenge that Republicans will have to overcome.

“In addition to that, Republicans who have answers to these issues – and are at least aware of them, and hopefully will work on them someday — have a huge credibility problem because we continue to talk about and lie about the 2020 election as if it was stolen, as if Joe Biden wasn’t the real winner of that election,” Buck said on CNN’s “The Source.” “I don’t think we can have the credibility we need with the American public if we continue the lies that we’re now telling.”

Candidates were split on support for a federal abortion ban, with Boebert, Flora, Harvey and Sonnenberg in favor.

An unofficial straw poll of debate attendees showed Sonnenberg to be the favorite, followed by Lynch, Flora, Holtorf and Boebert.

But while the candidates agreed on a lot of substantive issues, Andujo veered differently from Evans and Scott in delivering his thoughts. Andujo, who has never run for office, stumbled at times in talking to the audience.

Evans and Scott, meanwhile, are veterans in holding public office and were clearer in getting their ideas across.

Evans, a grandson of Mexican immigrants, is serving in the Colorado State House and told the audience he was highly effective in getting his bills put into law, even in a Democratic-controlled legislature. He also learned on-theground skills during his 10-year career as a police officer.

Brighton announced “Bobcat by Rosetta” as the winner of the 2023 People’s Choice voting for the Sculpture on Loan program at Carmichael Park.

Sculpture on Loan offers the opportunity for sculpture artists to exhibit their larger-scale artwork in a high-visibility park setting for a period of one year. After sending out a nationwide call for artists, a selection committee scores the submissions.

Votes were taken online and through ballots at the City BBQ, Brighton Summerfest and Harvest Fest. The sculpture has been purchased by the Brighton Cultural Arts Commission with Scientific & Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) funds and soon will be installed at a local park.

Twelve species of trees available for purchase through Brighton’s 2024 Tree Program

Growing Grads Summer Job Launch set

The City of Brighton’s Youth Services will be hosting its annual Growing Grads Summer Job Launch on Feb. 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Armory Performing Arts Center, located at 300 Strong St. This event is a great opportunity for youth interested in interning or working for the City of Brighton during the summer to build their resume, get tips and tricks for obtaining summer jobs, and find out more about what positions the city has to offer over the summer.

Attendance at the Summer Job Launch is required to be eligible for a possible paid summer internship with the City.

Registration is required for the Summer Job Launch at brightonco.gov/summerjobs and space is limited. The deadline is Feb. 22.

Community Reach, District Attorney cut ribbon for youth shelter ‘Empowerment center’ to house up to 10 homeless youth to keep them safe and off the streets

“Youth violence, juvenile crime, right now they literally keep me up at night. It is one of the greatest public policy challenges that we all face.”

The center is meant to serve all of Adams County and Broomfield, Mason said.

The new homeless youth facility, called the Empowerment Center for Adolescents, sits on part of the former site of the Arapahoe House substance treatment facility. Community Reach Center took over the operation of the Arapahoe House in 2018, renovating and refurbishing the facility and renaming it in honor of former Thornton Mayor Margaret Carpenter.

Community Reach CEO Rick Doucet said the facility was ready to take patients when COVID lockdowns and restrictions began in 2020 and it was not used.

“I got a call about the case the DA was referring to in 2021 and one of the things they asked me was, do I know of a place that we could set up?” Doucet said during the ribbon cutting. “And I said, ’Well, as a matter of fact, I do.’ And you are standing in it right now.”

District Attorney Brian Mason said he got a call from Thornton Police in 2021 looking for a safe place nearby for a young girl, a victim of human trafficking.

There wasn’t a safe place for her, not in Adams County.

“This young woman had not done anything wrong, she had not committed a crime and yet we had no place for her to go,” Mason said.

There is a place now, as Mason, Thornton City Councilors, Thornton Police Chief Terrance Gordon and officials from Adams County were on hand to cut the ribbon for a tenbed facility in the Carpenter Center at 88th and Lipan.

“There is a small window of activity after a young person is on the street for us to make sure that child doesn’t become a victim or doesn’t commit a crime,” Mason said.

cer Amanda Jones said the facility has room to expand. Current plans call for using one wing of the 43,000-square-foot facility, providing 10 beds for displaced youth ages 12 through 18.

The facility is the result of the combined effort of the city, Community Reach, the District Attorney’s office and state legislators.

Takes a community

State Sen. Dafna Michaelson Jenet and former State Sen. Dominick Moreno sponsored a bill in 2022 that allowed shelter options for displaced youth in judicial districts throughout Colorado. Adams County Commissioners agreed to pay $1.2 million in federal ARPA grants to operate the facility and Thornton City Councilors worked with residents to make sure the facility fits in with the Lipan Street neighborhood.

“You hear people saying all the time, ‘It takes a community’,” Doucet said. “Well, in order for this spot to be open, it took a community. For this population, there was no funding and the DA came and said, ‘If you had funding, could you open it?’ And I said absolutely, that’s not a problem. There’s not a problem with providing services if you have the revenue to justify it and to sup-

port it.”

Adams County Commissioner Lynn Baca said commissioners were happy to use some of their American Rescue Plan Act money for the shelter.

“The first $50 million of the ARPA funding went to non-profits through a grant process,” Commissioner Lynn Baca said. “We knew that we wanted the next part of the funding to go to high-level goals of Adams County and our communities. And this is one of our goals.”

Thornton Councilor Kathy Henson said she talked with residents in her City Council ward that surrounds the center.

“There was some concern when the phrase ‘homeless shelter’ got out to the community, “ Henson said. “There was confusion and concern. We will have a lot of folks coming here for services and help, and that does impact our neighborhood.

But understanding that this was services for youth who are not involved in the criminal justice system, that was an important part to get across.

These are not kids who have committed crimes and it will be temporary, while they are being supported to get to their next best step, which for many will be family reunification.”

VOICES Consistently confident and courageous

W

hen dreams whisper just out of reach, our instinct is often to shrink back, feeling underqualified for bold pursuits. But buried beneath selfdoubt, embers of our true potential still glow. Now is the time to fan those embers into flames. It’s time to embrace our created purpose with confidence and courage.

Confidence silences the nagging inner critic. It drowns out voices shouting, “Who do you think you are?” Confidence straightens slumped shoulders and lifts the chin.

It declares, “I am filled with strengths and talents to offer this world. I have a rightful place and voice.” Our fright shrinks because our confidence believes the best about us.

Initially this column started out as piece that would help salespeople understand the importance of confidence in their profession. Many sales leaders today share that confidence has become a major issue as advancement in technology, fierce competition, and other factors are causing sellers to doubt themselves.

My guidance has always been that sellers need to master three levels of confidence: confidence in themselves, confidence in their products and services, and confidence in their company to stand behind their products and services and fully support their customers.

But as I socialized the idea for this

column, my inner circle encouraged me to make it about all people because there is so much disruption going on in the world coupled with fear and uncertainty, that we could all use a shot of confidence and courage.

Courage is confiMichael Norton dence on fire, propelling us past paralysis into action. Courage says, “I feel afraid but will forge ahead anyway.”

It risks failure for the sake of fulfilling our calling. As we move forward while still trembling, courage builds muscle memory for our next brave act. Our capabilities multiply as we climb the stairsteps of growth. And remember that our confidence and courage are built while we take the stairs and avoid the false promises of an easy elevator ride.

With inspired confidence and courage, we break free from confining expectations and dead-end jobs.

We pivot into purpose-fueled vocations that energize us. We build platforms sharing hard-won wisdom.

Our authentic voice leaves a unique impact on those we live and work with.

With confidence and courage, we escape stagnancy. We learn new skills, then launch inspiring ven-

tures. We adopt healthier rhythms and mindsets. We enrich community through our gifts. We turn stumbling blocks into steppingstones, where once we teetered and wobbled, but now thrive and conquer.

True confidence is not arrogance that fluctuates with circumstance.

Lasting confidence emanates from an identity rooted in unconditional love. This soul-deep assurance fuels consistent courage to live out purpose, no matter the cost. With confidence as our foundation, consistency abounds.

The world peddles counterfeit confidence based on achievement and approval. But when statuses change or critics attack, false confidence crumbles. Basing our worth on shifting sand leads to inconsistency, soaring in success but plunging at the first sign of failure.

Genuine confidence stands on the bedrock of our faith-based foundation. When we internalize the grace and blessings that surround us, our confidence stabilizes. Our moods, mistakes and critics no longer control us. Confidence coupled with our inner strength sees us through our weaknesses, helping to liberate us from fear while living boldly.

Confidence-fueled consistency manifests in persevering despite hardship, staying true to values amid temptation, and speaking truth with grace not judgement. Consistent

confidence steps up when others retreat. It keeps believing the best about people and possibilities when cynicism abounds.

Living confidently also means resisting perfectionism that sabotages consistency. Progress over perfection is grace in action. When we stop berating ourselves, consistency builds momentum. Small consistent steps compound into massive transformation.

As our true confident consistent courageousness increasingly defines us, restlessness gives way to deep purpose and joy. We show up authentically without pretense. Our glow comes from within. We finish each race with heads high, already eager for the next.

How might the world change if you bravely stepped into your full potential? Your gifts are irreplaceable. It’s time to stand tall, claim divine affirmation, and let courage have its way.

New cartoon, ‘Never Will I Ever,’ hits puzzle page

On the beloved puzzle page of this week’s newspaper, you find something new to give you a laugh. It’s a comic from lifelong Coloradan Marc Vargas called “Never Will I Ever.” They’re single panel comics that will run weekly and debut this week.

In one, for example, a man sits in a chair and is covered in cats.

“Never will I ever have to turn up the heat… again,” the comic reads.

Whether it be teaching a grand-

child to drive or ignoring an emergency alert on your mobile phone, Vargas’ weekly comics highlight the small disasters of daily life and outcomes that typically make us wiser the next time. The comic is punctuated by the word, “again.”

It implies it really happened “and ended horribly wrong,” as Vargas said.

Or, in some cases, only mildly wrong, because life could be much worse than being covered in cats on a cold day.

Vargas is a longtime illustrator.

He’s put his pen to work for papers

in Denver and Boulder, the Colorado Rockies and for books and other publications.

So, where does he get his ideas?

“I’m a trained observer,” he says.

“I love to watch people interact.

I’m the guy in the back of the room watching everything happening. My ideas come from overhearing conversations, watching people do crazy stuff and my own catastrophes.

These get my brain percolating.”

Vargas got his start as a kid, admiring the likes of Charles Schultz of “Peanuts” fame. He went to Colorado State University, but also the

Joe Kubert School of Cartooning in Dover, New Jersey, which he calls a life-changer. After working for the college paper, including editorial cartoons, and receiving an honor from the Society of Professional Journalists, he got hooked.

“I hope people are entertained,” he said. “Possibly they will laugh or smile. Maybe they’ll say, ‘Yes, I remember trying to shovel snow with a crappy shovel.’ A smile, a laugh, a little seltzer down the pants (I stole that from somewhere). This is an absurd and crazy world we live in.

Laughing is our only armor.”

Aims host tax prep on campus Fort Lupton site offering services through March 9 STAFF REPORT

Aims Community College will offer free tax preparation and e-filing assistance through the Tax Help Colorado program at all three campus locations, including Fort Lupton.

Individuals and households that made less than $64,000 annually in 2023 can participate at no cost and receive help from IRS-certified Aims students and community volunteers.

No appointment is required. Sites are operated on a first-come-first-served basis.

Services are being offered at the school’s three campus locations, in Greeley, Loveland and Fort Lupton.

In Greeley, the services will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays beginning Feb. 10 and running through April 13. The Greeley site will close March 9 and 16 for Spring Break.

Services are being offered in the Cornerstone Building.

In Loveland, services will be offered from 4:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursdays from Feb. 8 through March 7.

The Prairie Building in Fort Lupton will host the tax preparation services on from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays from Feb. 9 through March 8.

Participants should bring all W-2s, 1099s and other income-related documents, any mortgage interest, daycare payments, college education expenses, charitable contributions and all other tax-deductible expenses. They should also have their social Security cards or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) documents for all family members and taxpayer photo ID, their bank account number and routing number to direct deposit refunds and a copy of last year’s tax return, if available In addition to providing community tax preparation services, it gives Aims students looking for careers in accounting and bookkeeping more training and experience before entering the workforce. Each fall, Aims students who volunteer with the program take a course that covers fundamental law and tax preparation. Students then take an IRS VITA exam that certifies them to prepare tax returns. They are then ready to assist the community with tax preparation in the spring.

Aims assisted 1,440 taxpayers last year and helped them receive more than $3.1 million in federal and state refunds.

Delores “Lori” Ann Lauer

February 6, 1943 - January 4, 2024

Delores “Lori” Ann Schreibvogel was born to Margaret and Herman February 6, 1943, in Denver. She was number 6 in the Schreibvogel line up of 9 children.

Lori was a good student even though she did not like school. She especially recalled feeling embarrassed going to school with her hands stained green because they had to pick pickles before school started. Lori graduated from Adams City Highschool in 1961.

Lori was an incredibly hard worker. She viewed all other work as “easy” compared to working the fields. The whole family worked as hard and as a result they never did without. They shared beds and bath water, but those were the things that made them a family and Lori wouldn’t have changed a thing.

Lori moved to Texas for a very short time.

It wasn’t for her, so she came home after a short while. Lori was also a beauty school drop out! She loved the textbook aspect, but she may have had a younger sister do her clinical work for her. From there Lori went into banking. She enjoyed her banking years and that’s the time in her life when she met the love of her life Bob Lauer. The 2 were married April 11, 1970. In November they welcomed their 1st daughter Wendy.

2 Years later the couple welcomed their 2nd daughter Robin. Lori blessed their family with another daughter Julie who she selflessly gave up for adoption in 1968. This was a decision Lori struggled with for over 50 years. Recently Lori was able to forgive herself and was able to spend some priceless moments with Julie.

Lori wanted to work but Bob didn’t want strangers to raise their girls. So, L&S draperies was born. Lori and her sister Shirley made beautiful custom draperies out of the basement of their home. This isn’t the only family business Lori was involved in.

Lori and her 4 sisters also had a homemade noodle business lovingly called “5 Sister Noodles”.

Lori’s biggest love was her family. She loved helping raise both Deiter and Maxfrom infancy. There was no greater joy in her life than her grandsons Roman, Deiterand Max. She also loved feeding her loved ones.

She was never happier than when her little house was full of people for her to feed. Not to mention she had magic hands. She could

make a bologna sandwich taste better than the finest cut of meat. Lori and Bob further expanded their family when in 1991 they opened their home and hearts to exchange students.

Over the years they hosted girls from all over the world. Mexico, The Czech Republic, Spain and France, just to name a few. One prerequisite was the students had to like to play cards. Because as you all know, Lori would play games for hours. She would have played hopscotch if someone would play with her. These ladies remain a huge part of our family today and always will.

When Robin opened Lauer Krauts in 2006, she came to work. Lori would tell all the customers that Robin owned the business, but she was the BOSS. Everyone knew who was really in charge. She loved to be there and worked circles around everyone half her age. She just couldn’t believe that we would make it and people would come buy it. Lori is the reason for Lauer Kraut success.

It will never be the same without her, but it is what it is because of her.

Lori loved to golf, and she was good at it.

Her favorite trips were when she and Bob would just pack up their clubs and just take off. They often times did not have a destination but would find off the beaten path little courses and have the time of their lives.

Lori’s faith was strong and never wavered.

She was unapologetically Catholic. She was a fierce Rosary praying warrior and her faith was her cornerstone. Lori’s life was full of love and family. January 9, 2022, she lost the love of her life when Bob passed away.

She could not wait to be reunited with him.

Just shy of 2 years later she received her heart’s desire and God’s grace and mercy.

Lori passed away peacefully at home January 4, 2024, surrounded by her family, just the way she wanted it.

Lori is preceded in death by her parents Margaret and Herman, her siblings Butch, Ken, Mary, Jim, Shirely (Ted) Younger, sonin-law Roberto Layva Lizarraga, and Bob and her husband Bob. Lori is survived by her sisters Carol and Dian. Her daughters Julie (Alfred), Wendy, and Robin (Dave) and her grandchildren Jordan Langland, Roman Lopez, Deiter Leyva and Max Trujillo.

Twenty-six new automated trains are coming to Denver International Airport this summer, according to operators.

Currently, 31 automated trains carry ticketed airport passengers from the three active concourses. About half the fleet has been in service since the airport opened in 1995 and has run over 1.4 million miles, so replacements are sorely needed, according to the airport.

The new trains are also automated, but more than 73 people are responsible for keeping them running every day around the clock.

“Passenger traffic at Denver International Airport is expected to reach more than 78 million by the end of this year alone, and 100 million annual passengers are expected within the next three to five years. We are preparing for the future in a variety of ways, including renovating the Great Hall, adding gates to concourses and adding capacity to the trains to the gates,” DIA CEO Phil Washington said.

“New train cars will increase the number of passengers that can be moved to the gates by approximately 850 per hour. They will reduce the time between arriving trains and allow us

to run a more effective operating schedule.

These efficiencies are going to be felt by passengers and make for a more seamless experience at DEN.” The first of the new trains arrived in December 2023 and will be tested through the next six months.

Everyone is excited, from the director of operations to the mechanic who maintains the trains. The new trains may be automated, but the people who keep them running are skilled, working people who are eager to enter the next era of moving people around DIA. The trains are important to the operation of the airport, according to DIA Senior Director of Operations Matt Robb.

“You can’t get to B and C concourse. The only way you can get there is on the train,” Robb explained. “It is a single point of failure, which is why we put such a heavy emphasis on maintaining (the trains). If we get the train doesn’t move, the airport doesn’t move.”

Robb said that trains and airports have been his passion since age 13, when he took a trip through the O’Hare International Airport.

“There were so many people here.

So many airplanes. So much space.

The logistics of operating a place like that, the challenges, again, it’s all about the movement of people,” Robb said. “So how they could operate a place like that was beyond what my 13-year-old brain could comprehend. So really, this is like some next-level airport nerd stuff.”

Robb fell in love with airports as a teen, taking trips with his dad to airports in Oklahoma City and Dallas Forth Worth. “We just ride the train around and walk around the airport and spend a morning and afternoon just in the airport,” Robb said. His love of airports and moving people started there.

Robb explained that the DIA trains are operated by Alstom, a contractor that manufactures French rails.

“They build a lot of surface rail trains, the traditional trains actual trains,” Robb said.

According to Robb, besides himself, only one other DIA employee, the automated guideway transit system administrator, works with the train system inside the airport.

The rest of the people behind the trains work for Alstom.

Keeping the trains running around the clock

Robb noted that the trains are not actually trains on a track. They have wheels and tires.

“We call the train the AGTS, which is an automated guideway transit system,” Robb explained. “We also sometimes call it an APM, which is an automated people mover. It’s not, it is a train. But really, they’re just like big, automated buses, they run on big rubber wheels.

And then there’s a guideway in between that kind of keeps them going where they are supposed to, but there’s no rail or anything.”

Alstom makes the trains and also operates a section of the airport accessed beneath the concourses by way of the tunnel system. Alstom owns and operates the shop where the trains are maintained, repaired and tested.

According to Aurora resident and Environmental Health and Safety Manager for Alstom DIA Marcus Huff, the site had gone 812 days without an accident at the time of Colorado Community Media’s interview at DIA. Because of the importance of the trains, Huff said safety is a top priority.

The reason, according to Alstom DIA Operations Manager Shawn Bingham, also from Aurora, is because of the downtime commitment between Alstom and Denver.

Bingham said the trains have to be available 99.94% of the time that the airport is open. And the airport never closes.

“In a 31-day month, there are 44,600 minutes in that month,” Bingham explained. “We have about 20 minutes of downtime out of those 44,600 minutes every month. So, we can try to paint that picture for taking such a small amount of downtime on average every month out of those 44,600 available minutes. And that’s about 99.94% availabilities.”

Alstom DIA Site Production Manager and Maintenance Manager RJ Hennessy, from Brighton, explained that up to seven trains run each day to keep up with the demand. The highest demand for the trains is in the spring and summer, not during the holidays, Hennessy said.

“Don’t get me wrong. We typically have (high demand) maybe two days around each of those holidays,” Hennessy said. “That’s it.

The people coming in for the holiday season and the people leaving for the holiday season are pretty much it. So, it’s two days around the Thanksgiving timeframe. And around the Christmas timeframe.

That’s it — just two days. In the summertime — take those two days and now put them over probably two weeks. And it starts at

Keeping the trains going all year, with only 20 minutes of downtime per month takes the help of all 73 Alstom employees, according to Bingham.

Who keeps the trains running

Alstom DIA Senior HR Manager Matt Fasbender said the Alstom team is more than 50% military veterans. The employees come from all over the Denver Metro area.

Many of the Alstom team members have been working at DIA for more than 20 years.

“About 27 people have 25 years or more,” Fasbender said.

Roberto Cortez, a mechanic from Commerce City, is one of those military vets with a long tenure at the site. “I had like I had 10 years in the Marine Corps,” Cortez said.

“So, I had already been through a lot of oopsies and the mistakes when you start turning wrenches.

It made the transition pretty easy.”

Cortez said that his experience working on cars and military helicopters helped when he started working on the DIA trains 24 years ago.

“It’s not that technology is the same, but technical aspects and using logic, stuff like that is,” he said.

Ryan Parrish, a train mechanic for Alstom DIA from Thornton, agreed that his military background prepared him for work on the trains.

“I was in the army for five years. I worked on the Patriot missile system,” he said. “I guess I wanted work that kind of translated.”

Parrish went to Spartan College of Aeronautics in Broomfield to acquire more skills. His counselor at the college directed Parrish to Alstom.

“I mean, there’s no money in the civilian world for taking out aircraft, but money is in fixing things,” he said.

Parrish has been with Alstom at DIA for six years.

that they’re not gonna let us put our hands on the train until they figure it out. And get it going. Then, they’re gonna give it to us so we can tear it up. I mean, so we can work on it.”

“We have a team that is here specifically for introducing the new trains,” Bingham said. “And they have a very, as (Alvarez) said, regimented plan that they follow, testing and making sure the train functions the way it’s supposed to. That it assimilates into our system the way it’s supposed to.”

He said the train must run 300 hours without fail before Cortez and the others get to it.

According to Bingham, the new trains should be online and transported by the public this summer.

Until then, these people will see to the trains, and to moving people throughout the Denver International Airport.

Tips to driving in snowy and icy conditions in Colorado

With colder temperatures comes snow blanketing the streets. The roads can be slippery and dangerous for Colorado drivers – new and native to the state. Experts say it’s important to be prepared for the difficult task of driving in the winter.

Colorado AAA says following a few tips can help keep drivers safe when traveling in the harsh winter climate.

“The first sustained, major weather event is always a useful reminder to Coloradans, regardless of whether you grew up here or if you’re new to town, to brush up on winter driving fundamentals: Slow down, don’t tailgate, and don’t slam on the gas or brakes,” Skyler McKinley, regional director of public affairs, said.

Prepare the vehicle

Colorado AAA encourages drivers to test their batteries and electrical systems, check all fluid levels, including antifreeze, transmission fluid, brake fluid and engine oil and make sure all lights operate properly.

Additionally, AAA advises people to inspect their tires, brakes, windshields and windshield wiper fluid.

“Remember, too, that four-wheel drive does not mean four-wheel stop.

We’ve had to winch out many topof-the-line trucks and SUVs, many

equipped with winter tires, simply because their drivers were going too fast for the conditions,” McKinley said. “Still, as with any storm, the majority of our calls were related to dead batteries, flat tires and engine operability, and most of those were from folks who were already safe at home.”

Keep an emergency kit

For those unlucky enough to end up stranded, whether by sliding off the road or getting stuck in traffic during a closure, Colorado AAA encourages drivers to keep an emergency kit in their cars.

“Keep an emergency kit in your car with tire chains, abrasive material such as sand or kitty litter, small shovel, flashlight with extra batteries, ice scraper, rags or paper towels, flares or other warning devices, booster cables and a first aid kit,” Colorado AAA said.

Drivers should bring blankets, jackets, hats and gloves for themselves and passengers. People should also pack water and snacks, such as energy bars, and bring pet food if they’re traveling with four-legged friends.

“Finally, remember that an ounce of preparation is worth a pound of cure. Your battery likely tried to warn you it wasn’t up to the task of starting your engine in sub-zero temperatures, likely through dimming headlights or sluggish starts in warmer weather,” McKinley said.

McKinley said by addressing issues drivers will be more prepared for the conditions and any emergency situations they may accrue.

“By addressing all those issues when they first come up, you can help make our roads safer, and significantly reduce your odds of needing to call for assistance in dangerous conditions,” McKinley said.

Driving on icy roads

When driving on icy roads, Colorado AAA advises that people slow down and be careful when accelerating, turning or braking, doing all gradually.

“Adjust your speed to the road conditions and leave yourself ample room to stop. Allow at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front of you,” the company advises.

People also shouldn’t tailgate, they need to watch the traffic ahead of them, avoid unnecessarily changing lanes and use extreme caution on bridges and overpasses.

“Black ice typically forms first in shaded areas of the roadway and on bridges and overpasses that freeze first and melt last,” McKinley said.

“Although the road leading up to a bridge may be fine, the bridge itself could be a sheet of ice.”

“Increase your following distance enough so that you’ll have plenty of time to stop for vehicles ahead of you,” Essman said. “Don’t crowd a snowplow. Snow plows travel slowly, make wide turns, stop often, overlap lanes and exit the road frequently.”

She also encourages people to make sure their children are secure in the proper car seat and that those seats are installed correctly.

A new wastewater flow connector into Brighton

Metro Water Recovery opened Todd Creek Metropolitan District Jan. 10, a new connector expanding into Brighton, according to a news release.

“With this agreement, Metro will provide high-quality water treatment and resource recovery services to people in the Todd Creek area, which will benefit the region and the environment,” said Mickey Conway, chief executive officer for Metro.

Metro Water Recovery is a wholesale wastewater treatment provider serving its connectors to 62 local governments, cities, and special districts. According to officials, its connector consecutively serves the Denver Metro area of about 2.2 million people.

The Todd Creek and Metro Water signed a special connector agreement in December to start its flow from the new connector to the Northern Treatment plant in Brighton in late 2025, according to officials.

Todd Creek was Metro Water’s newest connector when the City of Fort Lupton signed a service agreement on June 7, 2022. The Fort Lupton’s flow will also start later in 2025. The Todd Creek Metropolitan District is located west of the Northern Treatment Plant.

“Since 1998, TCVMD has been providing water services to very unique areas in northern Adams and southern Weld counties,” TCVMD President Don Summers said. “We are currently servicing approximately 7,300 residents. TCVMD is happy to now offer wastewater services to our customers as well.”

James, a former mayor of Johnstown, said he has never lost an election and that he possesses a common-sense approach to getting things done.

“I am a familiar face to the people of District 8. I have proven to win every election I have been in. I know how to get things done.”

They said they would also support Trump in the Republican primary and would back aid to Israel. On continued aid to Ukraine, the candidates

hedged.

Biden, they agreed, also should be investigated for financial wrongdoing. “Where there is smoke, there is fire,” Evans said.

All three also agreed with the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade but that there should be no federal ban on abortion. “It is now up to the people of Colorado on how best to preserve life,” Evans said.

The Republican primary for the newly minted 8th Congressional District is June 25.

Caraveo narrowly defeated Republican Barbara Kirkmeyer by just over 1,600 votes in 2022 to become the seat’s first-ever Congressional representative.

The 8th Congressional District covers most of Adams County, a large portion of Weld County and a part of Larimer County. The district was cre-

ated following the 2020 census, making it Colorado’s newest Congressional district.

Over 61% of the district is white while 38.5 % are Hispanics/Latinos, according to Caraveo’s website.

Key to Congress

Political experts are closely watching the race since the winner could hold the key to holding the majority in the House of Representatives next year.

Andujo, a son of immigrants, is retired from the Air Force. He worked in the healthcare industry as an information analyst and Senior Practice Manager at Banner Health, according to his website.

Evans is a former Arvada police officer and U.S. Army veteran who served with the Colorado National Guard. He was elected to the Colo-

rado House in November 2022, representing District 48 which encompasses parts of Adams and Weld counties.

He championed a bill that ensures leave for public employees who are in the National Guard and on that created a task force to study current training provided to judicial personnel around domestic violence and sexual assault, according to Colorado Newsline. He also sits on the Energy and Environment, Judiciary and Legislative Audit Committees, Newsline states.

James is a Weld County Commissioner and former mayor of Johnstown. James is a longtime radio personality and former chair of the Weld County GOP. James has collected endorsements from 21 Colorado county commissioners.
