Colorado wants to hire lawyers to prosecute gun crimes in federal court, some of which are no longer illegal

Colorado’s governor and attorney general are asking the legislature for $600,000 to hire a group of attorneys who would be loaned out to the federal government to prosecute gun crimes in federal court.

Proponents say the initiative would target only the most dangerous offenders.

But it would also let attorneys paid for by the state pursue cases that are no longer illegal under state law.

The Colorado legislature in 2021 rolled back a blanket prohibition barring people convicted of felonies from purchasing or possessing guns. Instead, only those convicted of committing the state’s most serious crimes, like murder, rape, assault, robbery, arson and child abuse, can’t have a firearm. Felony convictions for drug crimes and car theft, for instance, no longer trigger the ban.

Under federal law, however, a person convicted of any felony crime is still barred from buying or possessing a firearm or ammunition and faces a 10-year prison sentence if found guilty.

Weld County recognizes employees

Weld County officials honored 79 employees for their performance and their longevity serving the county at a ceremony Dec. 20.

“The dedication of our employees to serve our citizens is special,” Weld County Commissioner Chair Mike Freeman said, according to a press release. “Our employees help Weld County government be the best it can be, and we’re proud to honor their commitment.”

Employees from 14 departments were recognized for professionalism and performance while servic-

ing the county residents at the annual board meeting with the board commissioners, which included a packed house of department supervisors.

According to officials, the supervisors from each department gave each employee a commemorative pin, expressing appreciation for a job well done. The 79 employees were honored for different categories.

Fifty-nine employees were honored for ten years of outstanding service; ten were honored for 20 years working for Weld County government.

Also, seven employees were hon-

ored for 30 years of service: Patricia Castle and Van Duvall of the Sheriff ’s Office, Michelle Raimer of the Human Resources Department, Nancy Sanchez of the Department of Human Services, Isabelle Vazquez and Aurora Medina of the Department of Public Health and Environment, and Duane Naibauer of the Public Works Department.

Three employees were given a commemorative coat for being with the county for 40 years: Norma Rodriguez of the Sheriff ’s Office, Sterling Geesaman of Facilities, and Marlys Daughtrey of the Department of Human Services.

Women farmers network in Greeley November conference offers resources for women in agriculture

A Colorado effort to build a supporting network of women in agriculture kicked off in Greeley in November.

More than 50 women attended a two-day Colorado Women in Ag Conference, drawing women from across Colorado involved in agriculture operations from small farms to large cattle ranches. Weld County hosted the conference Nov. 17 and 18 at Island Grove Event Center in Greeley.

“The goal of the conference was to bring together women in agriculture and build a network to support their efforts,” said Hannah Swanbom, Director of Weld County’s Colorado State University Extension Office. “I’m proud to say this was a strong first step in reaching that goal.”

The event featured many speakers, including Colorado Commissioner of Agriculture Kate Greenburg and Colorado State University Interim Vice President of Extension and Engagement Kathay Reynolds, with the goal of education and support for Colorado women in agriculture to remain solid and sustainable.

According to Colorado State University Extension, half of all primary or secondary farm operators in Colorado are women, and that number is growing.

Swanbom, who also worked in the agricultural industry, said women experience challenges navigating agriculture.

“It can be intimidating to ask questions or obtain resources as a woman in agriculture,” said Swanbom.

“Having a conference for women, where they can be in a positive and encouraging environment, is a strong step toward helping women be successful in whatever facet of agriculture they are involved in.”

Double Diamond M is a livestock and meat company. Miller is a thirdgeneration American living in Colorado. Miller and her husband Alex have raised livestock all of their lives since 1989. But in 2013, the Millers’ life changed; her husband Alex was in a car accident.

“He worked in insurance and got into a head-on car collision. He wasn’t the same, and I couldn’t work after that,” Miller said.

Miller said it put her in the position to care for him and myself, trying to figure out what she should do for a living.

“I already knew about running a cattle ranch, and it was what we decided to do. God gives you specific things in life,” Miller said.

Weld County is Colorado’s largest beef cattle, grain, and sugar beets producer, according to Upstate Colorado Economic Development. It’s the state’s leading dairy producer, with over 2.5 million acres, 75% designated for farmers and ranches raising livestock.

According to Upstate Colorado Economic Development, Weld County ranks in value as the United States’s top-rich county with over 3,000 farms, about 20% of which have annual sales of over $100,000.

Weld’s agricultural products annually make about $1 billion in market value.

Over 875,000 acres of crop is planted annually, with over 300,000 acres planted with irrigated crops annually. According to Upstate Colorado Economic Development, the state’s climate and quality water make it a substantial dairy state.

Colorado is now the 16th largest dairy state in the nation; Weld County is now the 21st largest dairy county in the nation, and in the future, it is foreseeable to increase production, according to Upstate Colorado Economic Development.

Sanborn said the group is planning the 2024 conference with this year’s success.

“The support we received not only from attendees but also from our speakers and sponsors demonstrates the need to this type of event, so we are excited to start down that road for 2024,” said Swanbom.

“While dates for the 2024 conference aren’t set yet, we anticipate it will be held in late October or early November.”

The gift of a lifetime for active Bear Mountain runner Thornton medical team repairs hole in Evergreen man’s heart

It’s a holiday tale tinged in shades of The Grinch. Except this heartwarming story is true. And unlike the green curmudgeon who lived high atop a lonely peak, Craig McCormack is a 52-year-old ultra runner and father of two who lives on Evergreen’s Bear Mountain.

His heart was not too small. Unbeknownst to McCormack, it had a hole in it. Likely a congenital defect, it existed — unnoticed — for 52 years until McCormack suffered a stroke.

Thanks to a Thornton doctor, inspired in his career by a family history of heart disease, McCormack’s heart is now whole. Dr. Qaisar Khan and his team performed the successful surgery at North Suburban Medical Center Dec. 12.

“I’m ready for the holidays, and I’m going to start running again,” he said. “My kids are happy. They keep telling me to slow down, but I’m a stubborn old man and I feel so good.”

It’s a world apart from how McCormack felt in the small hours of Aug. 24.

“I got up and couldn’t feel my left arm and leg, and I was slurring,” he said. “It felt very weird.”

An MRI showed McCormack had suffered a stroke.

“I’m pretty active, so it was a bit of a shock,” he said. “I had no idea

“But I was more worried about my kids at the time and focused on them. You start thinking about your living will, the financial side of things.”

Enter Dr. Khan

Shortly after his stroke, McCormack met a physician’s assistant at an Evergreen hikers’ gathering who works for Dr. Khan, an interventional cardiologist with Thornton’s Advanced Heart and Vein Center. When he heard McCormack’s story, the assistant urged him to see Dr. Khan.

“A young guy who’s otherwise very active shouldn’t have a stroke,” Dr. Khan said. “There has to be a reason. Most likely it’s a hole in the heart.

“And if it happened once, it’s going to happen again. It’s basically a ticking time bomb. The next event could be life-threatening or complete disability. It needs to be closed.”

stems from heart disease in his own family. His grandfather suffered a fatal heart attack at 48. His father also had a heart attack at 52 but survives today, with the help of three stints.

Controversial Building Proposal in Lakewood Is About More Than Birds

The Dec. 24th Sunday Denver Post had a lengthy article on its business pages about a 412-unit apartment building being proposed by a Texas developer for a 5-acre site adjoining Belmar Park (see satellite image at right).

The focus of the article was on the birders who are fighting the project as best they can, given that the public and city council have no say in Lakewood when it comes to development.

That’s right — no say in any proposal to build on private property so long as it complies with zoning. The City Council doesn’t even have a say on subdividing land, although it’s a review body for appeals on major subdivisions. This project is on a single 5-acre owned parcel and, because it’s zoned multifamily, the owner could build a 12-story apartment or mixed-use building if he wanted. The developer, Kairoi Residential of San Antonio, is proposing a 6-story apartment building — still taller than most buildings in downtown Lakewood.

The City of Lakewood has ceded all regulation of such projects to its planning department. The planning director could, if he wanted, submit this project to the city’s planning commission for hearings and debate, but he has chosen not to, despite the controversy.

Anita Springsteen (below) served a 4year term on the Lakewood City Council through November. She decided not to run for re-election because the council has no power. Once she was told by the city attorney that council members are like citizens and that she had no more right to the information she was requesting than an ordinary citizen.

One such citizen, Mark Smith, made a Colorado Open Records Act (CORA) request for such information and was told that it would take 149 staff hours to produce the information and would cost him over $5,000.

Mark is a retired city planner and he said that he knows of no other jurisdiction which provides literally no public process for approving significant development proposals. The City of Golden has a process that could be a model for Lakewood and any other city. Check out

guidinggolden.com/planning-projects for inspiration. It includes a process for councilors and citizens to have a voice.

Lakewood has an ordinance requiring any developer to set aside parkland in proportion to 5 acres per 1,000 added population. For the Belmar Park development, that formula should require 3.5 acres, but the entire parcel is only 5 acres, so the director of community resources is allowing the developer to pay the city $254,545 per acre in lieu of that requirement. Again, no public or legislative say in that decision and, of course, no hearing. The planning commission would hold hearings; the planning director just decides.

Anita Springsteen moved that the city manager deny the in-lieu fee, but Mayor Paul said, “I’m not going to allow a vote on an illegal motion.” How is that?

It was unannounced, and no recording was made.

Instead, facilitator hired by the city took notes. Those notes did not include the names of any of the attendees.

The planning department’s web page for the project says bluntly, “This property has had this property right to build multistory uses for a long time, and courts have been quite clear that elected officials and cities can’t impinge or impede a private property owner’s property rights allowed under a ‘use by right.’ Courts have viewed efforts to do this as a ‘taking’ of property rights.”

Further, the web page says that “the proposed development will occur solely through the administrative process managed by the Planning Department.

will review the development to ensure it is meeting the city’s regulations for setbacks of the building, heights, green space requirements, landscaping, etc.”

In 2019, Lakewood’s voters approved the Strategic Growth Initiative which imposed a 1% growth limit, patterned after a similar law in Golden. That law also included a provision that projects of 40 units or more should go to the city council for approval, although that has not been followed, as far as I can tell.

In the wake of 2023 legislation outlawing growth limits statewide, the city council repealed the Strategic Growth Initiative and then re-passed it with a 2year sunset provision, meaning that it dies unless the council (or voters) vote to retain it. Curiously, the new law retained the 1% growth limit, but it sunsets along with the rest of the law in 2025. I asked why the 412-unit Belmar Park project doesn’t violate the 1% growth limit. It’s because the original designation of the downtown/Villa Italia district as “blighted” exempts that area from the limitation, even though it’s hardly blighted nowadays.

By now you’ve probably guessed that the majority of city council members are pro-growth or even pro-developer.

I interviewed Ramey Johnson, who served on Lakewood’s city council from 2010 to 2020, and she couldn’t think or any jurisdiction in which the governing body has ceded its authority over development to administrative staff the way Lakewood has. “It’s wrong,” she told me. She says that council has incrementally relinquished its power to administrative staff over many years.

She told how in 2003, in response to “angst” over CCU students living in residential areas, council passed an ordinance defining a “Student Living Unit.”

When the zoning ordinance was rewritten in 2012, Ramey noticed that definition had been deleted without pointing it out to the city council. Travis Parker, the director of planning, responded, “It wasn’t needed anymore.”

“The staff simply took out something that was voted by City Council,” Ramey said. “What else was deleted?”

Lakewood has among the lowest paid elected officials and highest paid staff of any city its size. City council members make $12,000, the mayor makes about $40,000, but the city manager makes about $350,000 (with benefits), and the department heads, like Parker, make over $200,000. Council members have no staff and no expense accounts. “We even have to buy the coffee for our ward meetings,” Anita Springsteen told me.

“This is a recipe for corruption,” She has studied the campaign finance disclosures of her fellow councilors and the mayor and told me that the lawyer representing the developer made a campaign contribution to Mayor Paul — and after the election, the chairman of her firm, Norman Brownstein, made a contribution to Paul’s campaign despite the fact that Paul was then term-limited.

No building permit has been issued yet for the Belmar Park development.

But nothing’s really stopping it.

The City of Brighton’s Youth Services will be hosting its annual Growing Grads Summer Job Launch on Feb. 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Armory Performing Arts Center, located at 300 Strong St. This event is a great opportunity for youth interested in interning or working for the City of Brighton during the summer to build their resume, get tips and tricks for obtaining summer jobs, and find out more about what positions the city has to offer over the summer.

Rocky Mountain Human Services wins Adams, Denver counties contract

The Colorado Department of Health Care Policy & Financing is redesigning its case management process, naming a Colorado firm to manage responses for Adams and Denver counties. The change began Nov. 1.

Colorado non-profit group Rocky Mountain Human Services will provide streamlined case management services to individuals with disabilities or other complex needs requiring long-term, home, and community-based support.

The new contract is part of Colorado’s redesigned case management system intended to make it easier for people needing services to navigate the system and get the care they need. It is designed to ensure that people have one place to go for questions and support and to improve the quality of care they receive.

“We are proud and honored to be selected as the Case Management Agency for Denver and Adams Counties,” said RMHS executive director Shari Repinski. “It’s essential to reduce the burden of a complex and siloed system of

care by creating a more inclusive and streamlined Long Term Care system in Colorado that recognizes and caters to the diverse needs of individuals, regardless of their disability. RMHS looks forward to making it easier for people to access care and to know that they have a trusted partner they can count on to treat them with the utmost respect and compassion.”

Brighton Police Department has launched an online reporting system at its newly updated website at www. brightonco.gov/police.

The online reporting system allows community members to submit a report directly to the police department from their smartphone or computer. It can be used to report criminal tampering, identity theft, lost property, theft, vandalism, and other matters.

All cases filed using the online reporting system will be reviewed by a police sergeant. This tool can only be used when the incident is not an emergency; no one was injured, no known suspects, and no physical evidence. All incidents that do not meet this criteria should be reported by calling our non-emergency line at 303-288-1535. Emergencies should always be reported by calling 911.

The city of Brighton and Resource Central teamed up to provide a free water audit for businesses and homeowner associations. The program aims to help residents and cities increase water use efficiencies and reach conservation goals.

“Almost everybody in my family has heart disease,” Khan said. “But when my grandfather had his heart attack, they didn’t have stints. That’s how my dad is alive, and it’s why I think a lot of us are living longer.”

A hole in the heart is a surprisingly common issue. Also known as a Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO), it’s a hole between the upper chambers of the heart. Everyone has one in utero — it allows circulation while a fetus is in the womb — but most close 2-3 minutes after birth.

For about 25% of people, that doesn’t happen. And for most of them, the condition never causes a problem, or is even a known condition. But for patients like McCormack, who suffer a mild stroke or symptoms like severe shortness of breath, action needs to be taken.

The life-changing procedure to repair the hole is typically done in less than an hour.

“To me, the most important thing is that you can prevent another stroke,” Dr. Khan said. “Imagine someone who has another 40-plus years to live, suffering a stroke and living those years with a physical disability, perhaps not even being able to talk. The burden of stroke on our society is huge.”

Khan conducts about 20 such surgeries each year. Each is gratifying.

“Somebody saying thank you is the biggest reward,” he said. “And if you can change somebody’s quality of life, allow someone to continue having a quality of life, that is priceless.

That’s why I get up in the morning.”

VOICES The greatest is love

T

he holy season of Advent dawns amid familiar carols echoing through frost-kissed mornings. In this hushed space of yearning hearts, we sweep away the holiday frenzy and rediscover an ageless, boundless love born in candlelit shadows.

Advent love manifests not in flashy fanfare but whispering solitude. We kindle joyful anticipation of Christ’s arrival by embracing sacred stillness. In early morning darkness, we wrap a woolen blanket around our shoulders and light a single candle, bathing the room in warm glow as dawn approaches.

We drink in the silence, opening our whole being to wonder. Stillness reorients us from dullness to breathless expectation.

Advent love arrives in hushed tones when we unclutter crowded schedules and overstuffed hearts.

It emerges in stillness as we behold Love’s luminous mystery. Like the solitary bright star shining through Bethlehem skies beckoning earthly kings, Infinite Love patiently waits

to be found, recognized and adored in unlikely places by childlike faith.

When storms rage and dreams lie in shards, love often feels impossible to muster. But somewhere in our soul, embers of hope still smolder. And hopeMichael Norton inspired love can reignite even the most broken heart. Where hope persists, radical love follows.

Good Luck 4-H Club prepares for new year

The Good Luck 4-H Club Achievement Banquet was held on Dec 2, 2023. The event was organized

by Club Leader, Gloria Cundall, to highlight the hard work the members and project leaders put forth this year.

The evening started with a potluck dinner with plenty of food and desserts to choose from. Each project leader was then able to present the members who had fully completed their projects with an award. It was also a time for each club member to share what they had learned and how they did at the county and state fairs.

The Good Luck 4-H Club members and leaders work hard all year to prepare for the fair and this banquet is a way to tell them that their hard work did not go unrecognized and encourage members to continue their involvement in the Good Luck 4-H Club in the upcoming year.

Herbert Ryde Swarr

November 2, 1937 - December 21, 2023

Herbert Ryde Swarr was born to Harold R. and Gertrude Swarr of Christiana, Pennsylvania and was the youngest of three siblings. He married Laurel Leah Olsen Swarr in 1963.

They had three sons, Eric, Luke, and Morgan.

As a teenager, Herb dreamt of becoming a pilot. After graduating from high school, he attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University for flight training. His first major airline job was flying for Continental Airlines.

Herb and Laurel moved to the Denver area in 1963 for employment with Continental. In 1964, they moved to Brighton and established a family. Herb flew for Continental until 1984 and went on to fly for Emery Worldwide Airlines until retirement in 2001. He flew many iconic commercial aircraft such as the Vickers Viscount, Lockheed Super Constellation (engineer), DC-3, DC-4, DC-6, DC-7, DC-8, DC-9, C-46, Beech-18, and the Boeing 727.

Finally, after mandatory retirement, he was an engineer on the DC-10. Ironically, this DC-10 was originally a Continental aircraft.

Herb was an incredibly active individual. He loved working on his property up until his last three months. Much of his activity was centered around horses. Herb was a fine horseman showing and jumping as a youth. Later, his equestrian activities were focused on trail-riding all over Colorado. He particularly liked to ride with his boys, friends, and relatives in the Ute and Papoose basins.

Known for his generosity, high- spirted personality and colorful character, Herb was well regarded by his fellow pilots, family, and friends. He was especially proud of his sons and grandchildren. Herb and Laurel maintained a strong tradition of family gatherings that included lively Christmas celebrations.

Herbert is survived by his sons Eric (Vicki), Luke (Sandy), and Morgan (Tina). Herb and Laurel have nine grandchildren, Jerrett (Val), Mason, Kaden, Tyler (Sarah), Andrew, Matthew, Austin, Allison, and Alayna. They have one great granddaughter, Abigail. Herb is preceded in death by his wife Laurel, his parents, his older brother Harold D. Swarr and his sister Ruth Ellen.

Keith Leroy Scott

August 19, 1949 - December 12, 2023

Keith Leroy Scott departed this life on December 12, 2023, in Firestone, Colorado.

He was born in St. Francis, Kansas, on August 19, 1949, to Wesley Hiram Scott and Margaret (Enevold) Scott. Keith was a graduate of Fort Lupton High School and was on the Bluedevils football, wrestling and track teams. He held various positions in the construction industry and also worked for the public works department in Fort Lupton.

An avid fan of the Denver Broncos and all sports, Keith enjoyed fishing, hunting and especially spending time with his family

and friends. Keith is survived by his wife, Imogene S. Yokooji; his sons Richard (Avril) and Zachary; his grandson, Benson; his sisters, Karen Call, JoAnne Birrenbach, Betty Scott and Mary Adkins and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Wesley and Wayne, and his sisters Kathy and Janie. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Fort Lupton Recreation Center.

PUTTING THEIR SOULS INTO SOLES Shoeshining and repairs bring purpose to local craftsmen

n 1838, photographer Louis Daguerre captured what is often cited as the first-ever photograph of a person.

The black-and-white image shows buildings and trees lining a cobblestone street in Paris. Although it was a busy street, the length of the photographic exposure rendered the passersby and horse traffic invisible in the final image.

But on that spring day more than 185 years ago, two individuals remained still enough to show up in the photo. In the bottom left-hand corner, on the sidewalk near the street, one person polishes another’s shoes.

The photograph unexpectedly became a time capsule of the age-old tradition of shoeshining, which although less common than it once was, continues to be an indispensable part of some people’s personal and professional routines.

From Denver to Centennial, several shoeshine and shoe repair craftsmen aim to make their customers’ lives sparkle by pro-

viding service, beauty and powerful interpersonal connections.

The skill of shoe repair

For Edward Koinov, the owner of Re-Nu Shoe Repair in Centennial, business is buzzing.

Over the course of an hour one Friday in December, customers entered Koinov’s shop in a continuous stream — asking him for advice, getting quotes or picking up their shoes.

In addition to shining, Koinov changes soles, replaces heels, adds stitching, makes color corrections and sometimes even adds embellishments.

And because he knows what he’s doing with leather, people often bring in other items, like purses and bags.

“I’ll never say no,” he said, unless a customer requests an impossible repair. “Most of them, I fix.”

Koinov’s space reflects the popularity of his service, which seems to have bounced back after a lull during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hundreds of shoes sit on shelves, awaiting repairs and pickups.

And despite rising costs of supplies, Koinov is making things work. He said he works on about 25 pairs of shoes per day, and business is especially busy in the winter.

“People love shoes,” he said.

Koinov, who grew up in Russia, learned to make shoes from scratch in a factory when he was 17 years old.

In 1989, he moved to New York City and later relocated to Colorado for the weather and the mountains, he said.

Previous to his shoe shop, Koinov opened a car dealership and a Russian restaurant in the metro Denver area. He said he lost money from both of these endeavors and decided to go back to his roots in the shoe business.

When asked why shoes are interesting to him, Koinov joked, “What am I going to be, a lawyer?”

He said that people are good at different things — and for him, it’s always been shoes.

“This is not one year, two years to learn this job,” he said. “This job is years (and) years. You need to know how to fix the shoes. You need to know this job.”

The ‘secret recipe’

North of Centennial, another tenured shoe professional, Vincent Wayne Robinson, owns his own shoeshining company in Denver.

Like Koinov, Robinson fell into the shoe business as a teenager.

He was working with a carpenter on converting a grocery store into a nightclub in Oklahoma City in the 1970s.

At 17 years old, Robinson wanted to attend the nightclub once it opened — but he knew he was too young to get in. So when chatting with the club owner one day during construction, he had what he calls a “vision.”

Out of the blue, he asked the owner if he had ever considered having a shoeshine stand in the club.

“The thought came from me, out of nowhere,” he said. “I felt like something spoke through me, because it was nothing I was conscious of. I know that’s crazy, but that’s the way it was.”

Robinson had no experience in shining shoes, but he told the club owner that he could provide the service. He asked his cousin, a reliably confident person, to join him in the endeavor.

“I started figuring it out — it became a nice little hustle,” Robinson said. “But it didn’t come to a business until I moved to Colorado.”

In the early 2000s, Robinson started working at the shoeshine stand at Denver International Airport.

There, he said, he learned how to shine professionally.

“I learned so much from the owner,” he said. “And that’s where the love began.”

After that, Robinson decided to open up his own company, Vincent’s Shoe Shine of Cherry Creek, which now operates out of a space on Ogden Street in Denver, among other locations.

The process of shining a shoe, Robinson said, is a “secret recipe” of cleaning, conditioning, waterproofing and “spit-shining.” In the past, people would use saliva for the shining part of the process — but these days, Robinson said “spitshining” involves using a water mist and a specific motion with a rag.

He said shoeshining is an art, and that it’s an important process to add longevity to leather shoes.

“Some people, they may have a pair of shoes that they can’t really

find again,” he said. “We come in a situation where it’s their grandfather’s shoe, it’s their mom’s shoe … it’s just an item that they really love and cherish.”

Robinson said the way a person looks at the shoeshining business is important, and people who look at it wrong may struggle to stay afloat in it.

“I choose to look at it from the same point of view that I learned from somebody who understood the fiber of just having a shoeshine in their business,” he said. “They know it’s for a certain customer — it won’t be for everybody — but that certain customer is definitely going to be a person who has a lot of pride in what they do.”

Connecting across a shoeshine stand

Even more than an art form, shoeshining is a valuable social experience for some in the business.

Starting as close family friends, Robinson trained Dominick Martinez in shoeshining. They started working together after Martinez finished high school, and it’s been an important part of Martinez’s life since then.

“I’m a person that’s capable …

of doing anything,” Martinez said.

“But I kinda never left this situation … It’s always come back around full circle to this.”

For him, the purpose of shoeshining has little to do with shoes. Instead, it’s about the people.

“Sometimes, some people like that one-on-one kind of interaction,” he said. “It’s refreshing. It’s not about what you pay for, it’s about what you get in the process.”

He compared the shoeshining experience to going to a barbershop or a beauty salon — where people come partially for the service itself, but largely for the connection with the person providing it.

He said this human connection is something that artificial intelligence can’t take away.

“There’s a reason why you need that interaction,” he said. “It don’t matter what’s going on behind that interaction — but our problem is we don’t let that interaction happen anymore, and this lets the interaction happen. You can’t put a price on that.”

Robinson, who also said the customers are his favorite part of the job, said he hopes his company can help share the tradition of shoeshining.

At his shop in Denver, he teaches courses to train the next generation of shiners.

“I started out with my kids, we started out with (Martinez’s) kids,” he said. “Now, we’re gonna manufacture it into a classroom situation.”

Martinez added that shoeshining is a trade that can help young individuals get on their feet and support themselves.

“We always need those trades and those personal interactions,” he said.

Robinson said shoeshining is a great way to teach kids about creating things and making money at a young age.

“At the end of the day, we want to see fathers and sons sitting in their garage, doing these things together, and just keep putting (relationships) between people,” he said.

“Everybody has to walk around with shoes.”

When reflecting on the tradition, Martinez referenced the early French photograph of shoeshining.

“This came a long time before us and it’s gonna be here a whole lot longer,” he said. “And there’s a reason for that … The interactions are something different.”

Table 7-6 is based on larger parking areas and parking in the frontage area requiring greater limits or landscape design mitigation than smaller parking areas.

The planting requirements in Table 8-2: Buffer Planting Requirements shall be used to buffer and screen more intense uses or elements of a site according to the design objectives of this section. The buffer width may include any streetscape and frontage, setback, parking perimeter buffer or other open space requirement such that the larger requirement will control. Efficient site design can allow the area to meet multiple requirements. Where these areas overlap, the plants may meet multiple requirements, provided the design objectives are met and the greater of the requirements in Table 8-1 and 8-2 applies.

The money being requested by Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, alongside Gov. Jared Polis, would go toward paying four state lawyers to operate out of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Colorado. They would act as federal prosecutors specifically focused on gun crimes, including firearms’ possession charges against those so-called previous offenders.

the scope of that work has been limited.

“I think an obligation we all have as public servants, and as people involved in law enforcement, is to be creative and to try to find different ways to get criminals off the street,” said Finegan, who served as Denver’s city attorney under thenMayor John Hickenlooper. “If we have people walking around in our communities who are felons in possession of guns they shouldn’t be in possession of (committing crimes in the community), then we should get them off the street.”

Finegan said he originally wanted to recruit prosecutors from district attorney’s offices across Colorado for the initiative after hearing complaints from district attorneys about the changes to the state’s gun possession laws, but that option didn’t pan out. That’s when he turned to the city attorney’s offices in Denver and Aurora.

per said the program with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, which costs Denver about $633,000 annually, was started under her predecessor, Kristin Bronson. Tipper views it as a big success.

“To have four folks who are just focused on (gun) crimes in Denver — I think that has made a difference in the safety of Denver’s residents,” said Tipper, a former state representative.

One of the federal cases the lawyers from the Denver City Attorney’s Office are pursuing is against a man previously convicted of felony drug crimes who used a stolen handgun in a downtown Denver shooting.

Edward Martin Jones’ conviction and 32-year prison sentence in the shooting were tossed in December 2022 by the Colorado Court of Appeals on a speedy-trial technicality, after which federal prosecutors charged him in June with being a previous offender in possession of a weapon.
