Broomfield has joined a swelling wave of Colorado communities sharply limiting thirsty turf grass in new development, with more communities about to follow, while other cities and parks departments are starting to rip out useless grass in medians and rights of way for replacement with water-wise landscapes.

State water officials, meanwhile, have closed out the first year of $1.5 million in local turf removal grants with nearly 40 applications for the money, and water resource experts hope to use the momentum from the anti-turf evolution to create a bigger state-funded buyback next year.

School teacher Bethany Gallegos was frustrated by her Heating and Air conditioning system, complaining to a friend that she needed to search Google for a way to keep it limping along.

Gallegos was selected as the winner of the annual Lennox International and Now Heating and Air “Feel the Love” contest in September, receiving a full heating and air conditioning from the Commerce City HVAC contract. The Now Heating and Air receive community nominations to select deserving families and individuals to install the heating equipment.

of their useful life.

“People had come to fix it before, and they said these heaters last about 20 years. My heater going on 24 years,” Gallegos said.

Gallegos teaches at Brighton’s Zion Lutheran School for 19 years as a second-grade teacher. She teaches all subjects except for physical education, music and technology.

“It started almost a year ago, I was at my daughter’s volleyball practice and chatted with another parent from school. I mentioned we had issues with air conditioner and with our heater, but said I would get it fixed it sometimes myself,” Gallegos said. “It’s one of those things hanging over your head. Knowing it will happen at some point. The furnace will

Gallegos said her friend had mentioned the Now Heating and Air program but nothing more happened.

“Then, five weeks ago, I got a call from Mary Larson with Now Heating and Air, which was strange because I never called them,” Gallegos said.

Her friend had referred her to the company’s program.

“It was touching. She thought of me out of the kindness of her heart. She’s busy with a job and has three kids to take time out of her life to think about somebody else’s needs. She said it was a shot in the dark and thought she’d try it,” Gallegos added.

A company representative came to take a look at her units, saying she should expect to hear from them in a week.

“I said thank you so much for considering us. I thought it probably won’t happen. Mary tried to call me, but I missed the call. And then, on the following week, I got the call and she said you’re the winner,” Gallegos said.

Wide-eyed discussion of Brighton issues Mornings with Mayor talk ranges from sales tax to county health

City officials touted a proposed sales tax hike that will go to voters in November at a reoccurring chamber event.

“We have an issue a lot of us have heard about, and I’m kind of preaching to the choir here, buts it’s a big deal if we manage to pass 0.15 % sales tax increase that will be dedicated to public safety,” Brighton Councilor and Mayor Pro Tem Blackhurst told assembled chamber and community members at the chamber offices Oct. 11.

It was old home week as Adams County Commissioner Lynn Baca joined Brighton Mayor Greg Mills for the chamber’s Mornings with the Mayor series. Baca served on the city council before her Commissioner

position.

But the city’s public safety sales tax was the main topic. If voters approve, the city will collect 15 cents on every 100 dollars spent for public safety.

Blackhurst said that with the city growing by about 45,000 people, the traffic and calls are increasing.

“When I first arrived, our basic roadway structure is about the same geologically. Our council meeting last night talked about roadway improvements for the future, but those things don’t happen quickly. Our number one issue regularly is traffic accidents,” Blackhurst said.

Brighton Police Chief Matthew Domenico said there isn’t dedicated public safety funding in Brighton.

Blackhurst said this money would be dedicated.

“The key, that’s what’s called the government supplanting, is not going to happen with this if it passes.

It will be used for additional equipment and personnel that will be needed to meet these demands. The city has done all we can do to keep the budget of the police department intact,” Blackhurst said.

He urged residents to recommend the item to their friends, family and co-workers.

“I’m asking you to support it, maybe have conversations with your employees, with your family, friends and neighbors, so they understand what it has to be used for, and the need for it,” Blackhurst said.

Domenico said the tax would generate up to $2.5 million in new revenue, enough to hire 12 new officers, Mayor Greg Mills noted,.

“You’re going to get a ballot in about a week or two or up to three weeks, believe it or not, these ballots come out early these days, about two, three weeks before the election, so you know what’s coming,” Mills said.

Construction and economic development But Mill said there’s a lot more going on in Brighton.

Mills also touted progress on the city’s new water treatment facility off Bromley past Discount Tire and Grease Monkey as well a new municipal service center.

Work on Bridge Street, expanding it from two lanes to four lanes, is also underway and Mills said there are other road projects being considered.

“We are talking about expanding Sable Boulevard from the central part of Brighton to the Adams Government building.

He said the city also, plans to expand the recreation center to add gym capacity and pickleball.

“Who likes pickleball?” Mills said.

New fast-food offerings are also on the way.

“New businesses coming it’s confirmed In and Out Burger, Raising Canes and a coveted Olive Garden people keep talking about,” Mills said. “Walmart wants to do a little expansion, lots of people are doing online shopping and want to add a building to support it. Texas Roadhouse adding more seats.”

Gallegos’ story stuck out, Larson said.

“She googled on how to fix it herself, and put it back together,” Larson

said. “With two children, it was our biggest safety concern. We all thought that she was our greatest candidate to receive the equipment. Also, she’s a teacher which was a positive. She gives back to the community,” Larson said.

Gallegos was touched.

“I’m not a crier but when I teared up, my girls, were worried and asked what’s going on? I let them know we won it. It was a load off my back. I know that we’re not the only

ones that worry about these types of things,” Gallegos said.

“Rachel, Lennox, and Now Heating and Air did this, and it really blows my mind that people are willing to help out of the kindness of their hearts to give their time to us and product. I just feel extremely blessed.”

“We are trying to have people not only live here but also want them to work here,” he said. “We want first-rate employers, so you’re not driving 30 to 45 minutes and beyond. Some people drive here from the tech center. It’s essential to the community to work, live, and play here.”

News from the county Commissioner Lynn Baca said

she grew up in Brighton, attended 27J schools, and graduated from Brighton High School. Her family was in farming, so her heart was with Brighton.

“I have deep agricultural roots in Adams County as well as here. I became a champion of open space.

Adams County fifth largest county in Colorado,” Baca said.

Baca talked about Adams County’s new health department that opened in January. It replaced TriCounty Health, a joint agency with Arapahoe and Douglas counties.

“Our reason to leave a threecounty health department combined services is that services were not equal across the board. We have the highest cancer rates, we have the highest amount of heart attacks, asthma and health-related issues including homelessness,” Baca said.

Baca said the commissioners looked at factors such as social determinants of health, where people live, air pollution, water quality, education, and your annual salary;

all of these factors play into your health as your family, friends, and neighbors.

“The basis of our health department are those social determinants of health to penetrate into the community. So that was the basis of leaving the health department. Our constituents, shouldn’t be at the bottom funded by the State of Colorado,” Baca said. “We want it to invest in our residents and invest in resources that they can access. Its why we left the health department altogether so we can continue all the existing seamless services provided by the Health Department all the same location.”

Baca said is proud of the new Veterans Memorial at the Adams County Regional Park, and said they want to build an amphitheater on the south side along 120th Avenue and redesign the Waymire building, which has outgrown its capacity.

Waymire won’t go away, but it will change, she said.

“It will be redesigned.”

Commission announces 2023 Excellence in Arts winners STAFF REPORT

The Brighton Cultural Arts Commission is pleased to announce its 2023 Excellence in Arts Awards winners: BrightonMusic Choir and Orchestra, Jan Hepp-Struck, Kathy and Ed Hansen, Judd Farner, Elena Guerrero Townsend, MJ McCafferty, and Sue Corbett.

Because of Brighton’s vibrant and

growing cultural arts community, the Commission created the awards to celebrate individuals and groups within Brighton who are cultural arts champions. These championsrecognized with the Excellence in Arts Awards Oct. 18 at Eagle View Adult Center.

The BrightonMusic Choir and Orchestra was honored in the Master of Performing Arts, a category is

open to individuals or groups. The group grew out“String Colors,” an ensemble that formed in the 1980s was an opportunity for adult musicians to come together and perform throughout the community.

Currently there are about 30 members who perform four concerts yearly. Smaller groups within BrightonMusic Orchestra have also formed, and they include BrightonJazz, Trill-

seekers, and Brighton Brass.

Jan Hepp-Struck was honored in the Master of Visual Arts category, open to photographers, painters, potters, sculptors, and jewelry designers.

Hepp works in real estate, but her love of taking pictures began with a Polaroid camera in high school.

An example of conservation success is the Paragon Falcon, Olwo said. It was on the endangered species list in 1970 but taken off in 1990 after extended efforts. Another is the bald eagle was on the endangered species list removed in 2007.

These are both success stories in conservation efforts.

“Invasive animal or plant species belong in that particular ecosystem. We are experiencing an issue in the Everglades Florida such as Burmese Python, not native to the Unites States or Florida’s ecosystem. They have grown in numbers due to this reason and its starting to take a toll on that system eating animals that are not a natural predator for that snake. Numbers have grown,” Olwo said.

The kids also participated in several interactive activities and live entertainment with nature educators, learning from other educators around the state.

The South Platte Valley Historical Society cosponsored the 2023 Children’s Water Festival.

Community College and the Adams County Fair also keeps this couple quite busy.

Judd Farner, was named the Master of Cultural Arts in Education, a category open to teachers and educators.

Farner is the theater arts teacher at Riverdale Ridge High School in 27J, a program he started six years ago. On average, 50-60 students have participated in each of the more than 14 productions ranging from “Cinderella” to “A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream” and the ever popular “Little Shop of Horrors.”

Elena Guerrero Townsend, was named Master of Literary Arts a category open to writers.

Townsend is the author of Latina poems and

short stories.

MJ McCafferty, was named Outstanding Volunteer in Cultural. McCafferty is a studio artist at Main Street Gallery and volunteers countless hours for all its events, workshops and classes. At Main Street Gallery she makes sure the outside of the building looks inviting by filling pots with flowers and she does the weeding.

Sue Corbett, was honored in the Visionary category as individual who has been a leader in the Brighton cultural arts scene. Corbett works full time as the manager of Eagle View Adult Center, for many years she has been involved in the cultural arts scene in Brighton.

Weld, Adams, and Morgan County students gathered at the Fort Lupton’s Historic Fort to learn how to keep water clean, their water footprint, how much water it takes to grow crops, conservation, and how floods start at Fort Lupton’s annual Children’s Festival.

The annual Children’s Festival was a splash Oct. 11, co-hosted by Fort Lupton South Platte Valley Historical Park and Central Colorado Water Conservancy District.

About 1,200 students were invited to this year’s theme, “Putting the Pieces Together,” with 4th and 5th-grade students from 14 schools in Brighton, Fort Lupton, Thornton, Firestone, Frederick, Lochbuie, Keenesburg, Galeton, and Fort Morgan.

Alex Olow, program specialist with Florence, Colorado-based Nature’s Educators, travels around Colorado bringing education and outreach programs with him.

“I’m teaching the kids about conservation and how to remove those invasive species and prevent them from entering an ecosystem,” Olwo said.

Thistle photo earns honor for budding photographer Brighton nine-year-old earns honorable mention from Audubon contest

Brighton’s own Greyson Carvalho took home the Honorable Mention in the Youth Landscape category of the Jamestown, New York, Audubon Community Nature Center 2023 Nature Photography Contest.

“I was really happy and excited when I got an honorable mention,” Carvalho said.

Carvalho is nine years old, turn-

ing ten on October 25. He attends Brantner Elementary in Thornton, and he and his family have lived in Brighton for eight years.

“I started taking photos about six months ago when I got my first phone and it had a great camera.

Since then, it has become a hobby of mine. I love to take pictures of nature. Flowers and plants and insects are my favorite,” Carvalho said.

Carvalho said once his mom saw that he liked photography, she did a Google search to find photo contests that are open to kids.

It’s how they found the Audubon Community Nature Center in New York. He has entered other photos into two different contests, too.

“I chose the Thistle because my

family was camping and we were taking a walk and I saw it. I liked the colors and the background behind it. I plan to continue taking pictures of plants and flowers, “ Carvalho said.

“I was so excited and proud of him! I am happy he has found a hobby that allows him to be creative. He tries to find the best lighting and angles for his photos.

He won’t hesitate to lay on the ground to get the shot he wants,” said Jessica Carvalho, Greyson’s mom.

The Audubon photography contest is an annual contest for youths ages 8 to 18 and Adults ages 19 and older. The categories for entries are photos of wildlife, any non-captive species, land-

scapes, and plants.

Judges do not know the photographers’ names or hometowns.

Judges selected finals of Adult and youth winners and honorable mentions nationwide.

Elementary school students invited to participate in Name that Snowplow contest

The City of Brighton has opened its third annual Name that Snowplow contest! Elementary school students who reside in Brighton are invited to submit their best and most creative name ideas for the City’s nine snowplows for the 2023-2024 snow season.

Students grades K-5 can submit their best names at www. brightonco.gov/snowplowcontest by Friday, Nov. 10. Winners will have an opportunity to take a photo with the snowplow they named and be recognized at a Brighton City Council meeting.

Additionally, contest winners will have an opportunity to ride in the City’s annual Festival of Lights parade on Saturday, Dec. 9 (weather permitting).

Winners will be notified by Nov. 21.

The City of Brighton is seeking artists and crafters to participate in a Winter Market during the City’s annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. The arts and crafts “Winter Market” will be held from 1 - 6 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 2 on South Main Street near the City’s Founders Plaza.

We welcome unique artists, crafters, and artisan food vendors who exhibit handmade works of art. No resale, wholesale or direct sales are allowed. Seasonal arts and crafts are preferred.

Corn maze returns through Halloween

Maize in the City, the corn maze and fall celebration is open through Halloween, offering a convenient and fun corn maze and pumpkin field the whole family can enjoy.

Admission to the Maize in the City site is free, with attraction prices varying from free to $20.

Maize in the city is located at 10451 McKay Road in Thornton.

Families can get lost navigating the 20-acre Crazed Corn Field Maze. Let the little ones take the lead as you make your way through the Mini Maze – a maze cut into a shorter corn stalk field.

Little ones can also ride through the field on the barrel train, race through the hay bale maze, and visit and feed animals in the petting zoo. Bounce above the corn stalks on our pumpkin bounce pillow and then test your aim as you launch ears of corn 100+ feet across the field.

The facility also offers the opportunity to swim through the free corn kernel box or have your kiddos take turns conquering the playground or racing rubber ducks. Then, stop for the perfect fall photo at one of the many photo ops throughout the site.

Bears for Kids at Eagle View

Brighton’s Eagle View Adult Center, at 1150 Prairie Center Pkwy., is working with the Child Rescue Foundation to help the youngest victims of domestic violence or homelessness.

The center is collecting stuffed teddy bears that will be given to metro area children in crisis. The foundation distributed more than 10,000 bears in 2022. Eagle View donated 161 of those bears.

The Eagle View Center will collect new stuffed bears or other stuffed animals from October 2 through November 7. The center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 303655-2075 for more information.

Coloradans react to violence in Israel, reprisals in Gaza

Amid a tragic and rising death toll from the fighting between Israel and militant group Hamas, members of Colorado’s Jewish and Palestinian communities gathered with concern.

Among them, Jewish Colorado, a cultural advocacy organization, which held a Zoom meeting to see what they might do to help. Nelly Ben Tal, the Denver-based emissary from the Jewish Agency for Israel, said that her family in Israel was feeling “helpless” after reports of the Hamas attacks had shocked the world. Israel answered the attacks with its own on the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian enclave from where Hamas launched its incursion.

“The last couple of days have been horrible, tragic,” for both Gazans and Jews, she said.

Ben Tal added that she knew of friends and family in shelters after hours of fighting.

Meanwhile, Reema Wahdan, a Front Range organizer with the Colorado Palestine Club, said in an interview with Colorado Community Media that she had a close friend who has family in Gaza that they had not been able to reach in the days after the attack. Facing aerial bombardments, Gaza, which contains about 2 million people in an area roughly twice the size of Washington, D.C, only had intermittent electricity.

Wahdan condemned the Hamas attacks but like many Palestinian advocates bristled at media reports that the assault was unprovoked.

Wahdan said Gazans have lived under terrible conditions for years.

“They’re literally drinking contaminated water,” she said. “It’s not a one-sided attack. It’s not just Hamas. The international community can’t start from right now.”

That’s a position echoed by Democratic state Rep. Iman Jodeh, the daughter of Palestinian parents who advocates for Palestinians in Aurora and Arapahoe County.

“Violence begets violence,” she said on social media. ”While we hear about the futile actions of the government and organizations in conflict, let us not forget, it is the civilians who pay the cost of conflict

— often with their lives in an unending cycle of violence.”

The Hamas attack began on Oct. 7. It included what human rights advocates have described as indiscriminate rocket strikes along with an incursion, some of it captured in video showing Israeli civilians being killed or taken hostage. And Defense for Children InternationalPalestine said at deadline time that dozens of Palestinian children had been killed in Israel’s Gaza assault.

As the conflict, described by Israel as a “war,” continued into its first week, the death toll in Israel and Gaza numbered into the thousands.

Israel reportedly cut off electricity and fuel supplies and said it would not allow food into the enclave.

Gaza, which has been under Israeli blockade for years, gets most of its electricity and about 10% of its water from Israel. ` “They can’t get electricity to run what they have,” Gary Anderson, a Colorado-based water engineer who has worked on a design for a desalination plant in Gaza, told Colorado Community Media in an interview last week. He is a member of pro-Palestinian group Center for Freedom and Justice-Colorado.

At a Colorado Palestine Club demonstration at the Capitol after the attacks, about 40 people showed their support for Palestinians with flags, clapping and chanting.

“Palestine is our demand; no peace on stolen land,” one of their chants went.

State Rep. Tim Hernandez, a Democrat who represents the north and west sides of Denver, came under political fire for attending the protest.

“I call for the #CoHouseDems to formally reprimand Tim Hernandez,” Lisa Frizell, a Republican who represents Castle Rock and other Douglas County communities, said on X, formerly Twitter.

She posted video of militants taking civilians hostage.

“His behavior and support of terrorists is beyond reproach,” Frizell added.

State Sen. Dafna Michaelson Jenet, a Commerce City Democrat, broke party ranks to castigate Hernandez on social media.

“I wholeheartedly disagree with Rep. Hernandez’s decision to at-

tend a rally in support of the unconscionable terrorist campaign unfolding against thousands of Jewish families in Israel,” she said in a statement. “As an Israeli and a Jew, it’s hard to put into words the pain, fear, and rage that myself and my family both here and in Israel feel.

My loved ones are currently living from siren to siren running for their lives to underground bunkers.”

After that, Hernandez issued a lengthy response to the criticisms online.

“I listened at a rally on Saturday (Oct. 7) in solidarity with the Colorado Palestinian community, not Hamas, because Palestinian people shared in the tragic loss of life this weekend,” Hernandez wrote on X. “I did not speak or attend the rally in support of Hamas or in support

of the attacks on Israel that took place over the weekend, nor did I ‘spit on Israel.’ I have listened and heard deeply from Jewish and Israeli Coloradans who have called for my solidarity in mourning their losses as well.”

On the Zoom call, Dan Leshem, director of the Jewish Community Relations Council at Jewish Colorado, said the demonstration was “profoundly offensive and in poor taste and disgusting.”

Other Colorado leaders also showed support for Israel. Gov. Jared Polis, Attorney General Phil Weiser and Secretary of State Jenna Griswold, all Democrats, said on social media that they stand with the Jewish state.

S

trong, healthy relationships are the foundation for happiness and success, both at home and at work. Yet in our busy modern lives, it can be all too easy to let connections with loved ones WINNING and colleagues slip. So, how can we build and maintain winning WORDS relationships in all areas of our life?

At home, it starts with intentional quality time with family. Be fully present during meals, outings and important events. Put down devices and focus on each other. Share feelings openly and listen without judging. Laugh toMichael Norton gether. Express affection. Go for walks to talk things through. Play games face-to-face. Simple daily interactions build trust and understanding over time.

I remember a lesson that I learned many years ago from Zig Ziglar. On one of his programs, he talked about how important it is to be fully present. He used an example that I believe most of us can relate to. The scenario is that you are watching television and a child or spouse says that they want to talk to you or show you something, and you respond by saying OK after this show is over or ask if it can wait until the next commercial. The message this sends is that the program or show is more important than our family member.

I’ll never forget the first time I applied Zig’s lesson to my life. I was watching Monday Night Football and my wife came in and asked me if we could talk about something. I reached for the remote and turned off the television immediately. My wife looked at me and asked me why I turned off the television, and I told her that she was more important than any football game and that I wanted to hear what was on her mind. It was a real growth moment for our marriage and family.

Speaking of marriage, it is also important to nurture your marriage or partnership specifically. Go on regular dates, keep communicating, and make intimacy a priority. And if you are looking for a great book about this, check out Zig Ziglar’s book “Courtship After Marriage,” you can thank me later for that one. Support each other’s growth. Divide household responsibilities fairly. Allow space for individual pursuits.

Appreciate each other’s differences. A strong couple connection radiates out to the whole family.

With children, it’s about engagement. Get on their level, understand their world, and guide them patiently. Set clear boundaries, but also give them freedom to develop. Encourage their

interests. Be consistent and keep promises. Admit mistakes and apologize when you’re wrong.

Your dependable presence through ups and downs forms a secure attachment. Communication is very important to a healthy and winning relationship with our children regardless of their age. It’s easy to try and ignore the trying teenage years, hoping we can just simply survive them.

The better idea is to talk to them even more during this time, because if we aren’t the ones talking with them, they will only hear the world talking at them.

At work, building solid relationships starts with respect. Value everyone’s contributions, from mailroom to management. Get to know co-workers personally and show interest in their lives. Offer sincere praise. Give credit where due. Listen to ideas and feedback. Express appreciation for help. Building camaraderie and goodwill motivates higher performance.

Also foster good communication. Clarify expectations. Address issues directly, not through gossip. Give regular updates. Be transparent about decisions. Discuss problems calmly with-

out blame. Maintain confidentiality. Reliable communication cements professional trust.

Winning relationships require effort but deliver huge rewards. At home, you build family bonds that last a lifetime. At work, you create an environment of support and collaboration. By consciously investing in relationships, you enrich every area of life. The connections we build with others shape who we are and determine our success and happiness.

Dorothy Lorraine Vargas, 84 of Brighton, passed away October 8, 2023. Born to Joe and Jennie (Martinez) Sailas on February 21, 1939 in Wattenburg, Colorado. She attended Fort Lupton High School and graduated from Fort Lupton High School. Dorothy married the love of her life on June 28, 1958 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Brighton.

She played volleyball, basketball and loved to run in her free time. Dorothy was a homemaker and was an amazing mom to her children, Mark, Ken, Pilar and Jason.

Willard Timmerman

May 13, 1933 - September 21, 2023

Willard Louis Timmerman was born to Henry C. Timmerman and Olga Bredehoft Timmerman in Brighton, Colorado. He died and went to be with Jesus in heaven on September 21, 2023, at the age of 90. Willard is survived by his lovely wife Bernice and the three beloved children with whom the Lord blessed them: Karla Timmerman Heerssen (Harvey), Michael Timmerman (Shereen), and Amy Timmerman Heasty (Tom, deceased); also six beautiful grandchildren: Katherine Yonkers (James), Anna Beyersdorf, Philip Beyersdorf (Nicole), Cori Woltmann (Luke), Matthew Timmerman (Ashley), and Allyson Timmerman; and eight precious great-grandchildren: Jamie Yonkers; Destin, Elsie, and Will Woltmann; Amelia and Henry Timmerman; and Erin and Aiden Schellpeper. Will was predeceased by his parents, his six brothers and sisters (Helen, Harvey, Lester, Donald, Baby Sister, and Kenneth); infant granddaughter, Sarah Beyersdorf; and son-in-law, Tom Heasty. He also leaves numerous nieces and nephews, countless friends and loved ones.

Will grew up on the family wheat farm outside Brighton, graduated eighth grade from Zion Lutheran School, and went on to attend both Concordia Lutheran High School and Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Nebraska, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Education. It was at Concordia that Willard met Bernice Pankow, a fellow education student from Hankinson, North Dakota. By the grace of God they fell in love and were married on June 28, 1954.

The Timmerman family lived in Colorado

and California, where Willard was a Lutheran elementary teacher and principal at University Hills, Denver; St. John’s, San Francisco; and St. John’s, Montebello. They moved back to Brighton, in 1977, where Will commenced a new and successful career as a carpet and tile layer. They lived in their gracious house on South 11th Avenue until it was necessary for both to move into assisted living in the winter of 2022.

Will was an accomplished storyteller, carpenter, woodworker, yard man, and all-around fixit guy. One of his favorite memories of parish work was playing the organ in church. Even after retiring from teaching, he often taught adult Bible classes and was active all his life in the congregation.

He loved to read a vast variety of books and solve word and number puzzles.

Willard was first a baptized and forgiven child of God, redeemed by the life, death, and resurrection of his Savior Jesus Christ.

Jesus was the center of his life as a husband, father, teacher, friend, and worker in His Church. He leaves a legacy of outgoing friendliness, kindness, generosity, Christian example, and the boldness to speak of his faith.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME Local high school graduates find unique brotherhood on Mines football team

ack Walters wasn’t planning to play college football.

Now, he plays for the

reigning NCAA Division II National Runner-Up, practically down the street from where he grew up.

A three-sport athlete for Golden High School, Walters hoped one of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference universities would recruit him during his senior year. Once Colorado School of Mines reached out and offered him a scholarship, he knew that’s where he belonged.

“Growing up in Golden, Mines is just in our backyard,” Walters said. “ …

I knew I wasn’t going to pass up on it. It’s a great

academic school, and (has) some of the best football in the country.”

Walters is one of about 30 players from the Denver metro area on the Mines football team, helping spur the Orediggers toward their firstever national title.

Because many of them played against each other in high school, the local Orediggers have a unique bond, Walters and Pomona High School graduate Billy Pospisil III described.

The players sometimes dish out good-hearted “smack talk,” they said,

and share stories about opponents or coaches they had in common.

Walters explained how those similar experiences can make things easier when meeting new players on recruiting visits or at camps.

That’s something Valor Christian High School graduates Jackson Zimmerman and Carter Forsythe can attest to. The two played together at VCHS, and when Forsythe visited the Mines campus, Zimmerman — who was a freshman cornerback for the Orediggers — showed him around.

Forsythe, now a redshirt freshman linebacker, said seeing Zimmerman find success at Mines was one of the reasons he decided to join too. Another was the program’s culture, and how similar it was to Valor Christian’s, he continued, adding how there are now six VCHS alumni among the Orediggers.

“Mines’ culture is already so fantastic,” Forsythe said, “… (and) Jackson made it an easy decision.”

Another benefit of playing so close to home, they described, was how frequently they get to see their loved ones at the games. They said their family members, former teammates and coaches, family friends and others from the Valor Christian community show up to support them at the games.

Pospisil, who played wide receiver at Washington State University and grad-transferred to Mines in fall 2022, commented how grateful he was to be back home. He believed attending a local college was “underrated,” and that some high school students might overlook it as an option.

“But, coming back after being away, there’s really not much that beats it,” Pospisil continued. “ … It’s been a great ride ever since.”

Despite attending different high schools, the four players said their experiences helped prepare them for everything they’d face at Mines.

Walters said Golden’s football team struggled his freshman and sophomore years, but a new head coach and a change in culture propelled the program to new heights.

“It taught us what it was like to be in a winning program,” he continued.

That was something Zimmerman found very early at Valor Christian.

The redshirt sophomore cornerback said he wasn’t planning to play high school football, clarifying that he went to Valor Christian for its academics. But he ended up “falling in love” with the game and the program’s culture.

Despite having six head coaches since starting high school, he said he’s been drawn to programs “where, no matter who the coach is … you’re going to have a great brotherhood around you.”

Zimmerman and Forsythe described how Valor Christian and Mines have similar cultures centered on brotherhood and trust. And for both programs, that’s translated into winning records, Forsythe added.

“Winning isn’t everything,” he continued.

“But it’s definitely a byproduct of the hard work we put in here (at Mines) and the chemistry we have.” #HelluvaEngineer

The Orediggers aren’t just facing tough situations on the field, but in the classroom as well.

The players must learn to balance athletics with their classes in engineering, computer science and similar subjects.

Pospisil, who’s pursuing a master’s degree in environmental engineering science, said the Orediggers face a “truly unique situation” as far as college football goes.

“School is tough, but it’s going to be tough when you’re doing any one of these majors,” Pospisil continued. “But when you’re done,

you’re set up for life. I think in the receiver’s room, the average starting salary in the last five years is close to $100,000 now.”

While Pospisil was unsure if he’d return to Mines next year, Walters plans to use his final year of eligibility in fall 2024 and pursue a master’s degree in engineering & technology management.

Walters is currently studying mechanical engineering, which he said he didn’t know much about when he first started at Mines. But he’s enjoyed becoming a proverbial jack-of-all-trades, studying everything from construction to technology consulting.

“It’s really hard, but I like it,” he said. “ … If I was telling my high school self if I should come to Mines, I’d say do it 100%.”

‘The perfect fit’

While there’s been plenty of adversity to overcome both on and off the field, Walters had no regrets about coming to Mines. He said the university and the football program have taught him “how to grow up.”

“You don’t really know how hard school and football can be,” he said, adding that because of that adversity he’s now forged bonds with his fellow Orediggers that’ll likely endure all their lives.

Those planning to attend college shouldn’t be afraid to stay local, Walters said. While he always wanted to go to an out-of-state college, he described how Mines “is such a special place you can’t get anywhere else in the country.”

Pospisil felt the university deserved more national recognition for its academic prowess.

When he graduated from Washington State with an engineering-related degree, he knew Mines would be the “perfect fit.” “‘Where can I go play some great football and get a great education?’” he continued. “There’s really no better place super close to home.”

Zimmerman and Forsythe both said they were grateful to be able to represent Valor Christian and the Highlands Ranch-Littleton area on the college football stage. The two hoped their families, hometown communities and the Denver area would continue to support them as the Orediggers hope to end 2023 holding a trophy.

“It’s really cool to just see the support,” Zimmerman said, “and see everyone come together in Golden.”

“We weren’t having a lot of issues. it was just little stuff,” Gonzales said. “We’re going to make it very far in regionals. Our goal is to win state. We can do that if we play as a team. We need positive attitudes. That will help us.”

The regional round brackets are due Oct. 11. The tournament is Saturday, Oct. 16. FLHS has to win one of a possible two games to qualify for the state tournament for the third year in a row.

“We realized it’s a fun game.” Mewbourn said. “We have a reputation to uphold. We have to keep winning to show everybody. We can do it. We can make it through regionals and make it to state.”

“Our team has bonded well together,” Galicia said. “We’re communicating, especially on the field but off the field too. We didn’t communicate until we were scrambling. I’ve been playing with some of these girls since I was a freshman, so I’m excited to see where we can go.

We can go as far as it will take us.”

The Bluedevils, winners of their last four games in the regular season and two-time Colorado League champions, agreed the start to the season was slow and the finish was pretty good.

“The season got off to a little bit of a rough start with our dynamic,” said shortstop Genevieve Hunt.

“We’ve been working as a team lately. The intensity has gotten better. We’ve been practicing hard.”

Infielder Reagan Mewbourn said the start was “a little shaky.”

“We didn’t clock together well as a team,” she said. “We’ve figured it out now. Last year was such a different year. We had a pretty decent time with only 16 games last year. We had to fight back for it and play other teams. That set everybody on edge.”

Coach Albert Vasquez, who won his 100th game as Bluedevils’ coach this season, said he wanted to start the season with a tough schedule.

“I wanted to see where we were at the beginning of the year,” he said.

“I’m a firm believer that it’s not how we start, it’s how we finish. Right now, we’re clicking on all cylinders.”

Hunt said the team began to realize its goals.

“With that in mind, we realized we have to keep pushing. The beginning is always rocky. We play with comp teams, then we come to back and have to get things to gel,” she said.

Sammy Gonzales, who was the winning pitcher in Fort Lupton’s 16-2 triumph over Valley High School Oct. 9, said position changing was part of the early season issues.

“We just missed it (a normal season) a lot. We were eager to get out there, but we were playing for ourselves,” she said. “We discussed the idea that it’s better to work as a team.”

“We just didn’t communicate,” said FLHS catcher Julissa Galicia. “Communication is a big part of the game.

Yes. These extra funds will allow the police department to hire 12 additional police officers who will assist with keeping the city safe.

More people equal more crime and we need to mitigate with the addition of more staff.

If a development does not fit the current Land Use and Development Codes and it will negatively affect residents, then the residents should be considered first. This is especially true if the proposed development could cause health or safety issues.

Residents should be consulted as to the direction there city is developing. However all laws as well as codes and future development plans that have been laid out must be considered as well. Balance is the key all sides considered.

There are some serious trust issues between the residents towards city government, developers and landowners.

Name something that the current City Council has done that you would have done differently, and explain why and how your solution is better.

Recently (councilors discussed) a service plan having to do with a property owner. One property owner was unaware and should have had the opportunity to be there. If this could not be worked out in that hearing, it should have been continued.

What makes you the best choice for this City Council seat?

I am not a politician! I’m not someone that jumps to conclusions or is easily swayed. I am not afraid of asking hard, straightforward questions. The people who live in Brighton will be my first priority in discussion and policymaking.

Due to our state and federal legislative laws making it much easier for criminals, our public safety needs to be fortified! This would be a dedicated funding source strictly for our police department

and would certainly help make our community safer.

Residents should have a say on how those developments affect the surrounding properties and receive real answers to those questions along with possible concessions before final platting of the development is decided and voted on.

When developing new subdivisions, funds should be dedicated to improving existing infrastructure. New housing units can attract businesses but it’s crucial to build responsibly and with consideration for the community.

State seeks successor for criminal justice commission Polis forms panel to recommend a replacement for policy advisory group Gov. Jared Polis issued an executive order forming a task force charged with recommending a replacement for a panel that helped guide the Colorado legislature on criminal justice policy for more than a decade before it was shut down this year by Democratic state lawmakers who said it wasn’t operating as intended.

The governor’s task force is also charged with filling the policy-recommendation void left when the Colorado Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice stopped operating earlier this year and until a replacement is created.

“We want the work to continue,” Polis said in an interview with The Colorado Sun. The CCJJ, formed by the General Assembly in 2007 and the brainchild of then-Gov. Bill Ritter, was intended to help remove partisanship from the

process of drafting criminal justice reform policy.

The 30-member panel was made up of legislators, prosecutors, representatives of the court and community members.

But progressive Democrats in the General Assembly this year began to have doubts about the commission and shut it down in a surprise vote in the final days of the 2023 legislative session when it came up for reauthorization in the House Judiciary Committee.

“I think we spent the last 20 years coming back and fixing policy that CCJJ has recommended,” state Rep. Lorena Garcia, an Adams County Democrat and a member of the House Judiciary Committee, told The Colorado Sun in May. Polis and moderate Democrats were furious at the decision, with the governor quickly vowing to pursue a replacement.

The working group formed by Polis’ executive order will have 17 members, including a county human services representative, a victim advocate, a victim of a crime, a former offender, a law-enforce-

ment representative, a criminal defense expert, the attorney general, the executive director of the Department of Public Safety and others.

The task force, whose makeup is similar to the CCJJ, though it has less influence from the courts, is charged with presenting its recommendations on a CCJJ replacement or replacements by March 1.

Polis said he hopes the legislature, which reconvenes in January and operates for 120 days, will pass a bill acting on the panel’s advice.

One advantage of a criminal justice policy commission created by the legislature is that it can be better staffed than a panel created through an executive order, Polis said.

“We’ll do our best to make it work,” Polis said.

The governor said his executive order doesn’t have an end date, meaning the working group can remain in place indefinitely. It’s his plan, however, to end the task force should and once the legislature creates a CCJJ replacement.

“If there’s a formal group in statute, the executive order would likely be rescinded at that point,” Polis said The ACLU of Colorado, one of the groups that urged the legislature not to reauthorize the CCJJ, said that it was disappointed with the makeup of the governor’s task force.

“We agree the sunsetting of the CCJJ should be an opportunity to ‘reimagine criminal justice policy and reform work in Colorado’ but that reimagining will be much harder to achieve when it’s the same cooks in the same kitchen as the CCJJ,” said Taylor Pendergrass, the group’s director of advocacy. “It is precisely because some criminal justice issues can be complex that a rigid, onesize-fits-all permanent committee is likely not the best way to do criminal

justice policy making. It didn’t work well in the last few years in the CCJJ, it’s not an approach you see much of in other states, and it’s not something we embrace with other complex policymaking in Colorado — whether that is housing, water or education.”

Garcia, the state representative who voted against reauthorizing the CCJJ, said that she was disappointed in the governor’s order.

“I would like the see the focus of a criminal justice commission focus on innovative effective prevention methods, not debunked sentencing motivators that cost the state tons of money that could be funneled to early childhood, K-12 education (and) transportation,” she said.

The CCJJ’s work in recent years led to a rewrite of the state’s criminal code to downgrade the penalties for misdemeanors and reclassify a number of crimes as lower-level offenses.

This year, three bills debated in the

legislature originated in the CCJJ, including a controversial change to the state’s auto theft laws that was panned by progressives because of how it increased penalties for some kinds of car theft.

State Sen. Julie Gonzales, a Denver Democrat and chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, told The Sun that the CCJJ didn’t have enough racial or geographic diversity, nor enough people who had “lived experience” with the criminal justice system.

“It was my understanding that the CCJJ was meant to be a place free from politics where you could dive into issues, as difficult or complicated or nuanced as they may be,” Gonzales said. “But increasingly CCJJ became a place where we, as a legislature, sent things that we didn’t really want to study or wanted to slow down.”

Polis said he was disappointed when the CCJJ wasn’t reauthorized and that he thinks the work the panel

did changed Colorado for the better.

“Look at the body of work — over 100 bills that became law,” he said.

“I would really put the question to anybody: Is Colorado more just and safer because of the over 100 bills that came out of CCJJ? I think almost anyone anywhere on the spectrum would agree that while, of course, nobody can get everything perfect every time, Colorado is safer and more just because of those over 100 bills that came out of this process — that became law.”

Law enforcement groups and prosecutors celebrated Polis’ order in statement’s released by the governor’s office.

The nonprofit worked with WaterNow Alliance to advise Broomfield, and Rogers said cities from Fort Collins to Grand Junction to Edgewater are working on or have recently passed new landscaping ordinances deemphasizing turf. WaterNow Alliance’s grant work with Broomfield, population 78,000, provides up to 250 hours of pro bono water-wise consultation, Rogers said.

The Broomfield City Council unanimously passed what Rogers calls one of the strongest turf restrictions in the state in early October, with turfgrass allowed on only 30% of the front and side yards of new detached homes and commercial construction. New irrigation systems in Broomfield must have rain shutoff

sensors to prevent overwatering, and turf is banned from parking lot landscapes. Broomfield’s new ordinance starts Jan. 1.

Aurora and Castle Rock have also recently passed sharp cutbacks in turf allowance for new construction, after years of drought in Colorado helped build momentum for water savings. While municipal water use overall makes up less than 10% of statewide water use, with the vast bulk going to agriculture, landscape watering makes up half or more of municipal usage. Broomfield said 60% to 70% of its water use has been outdoors in recent years.

“We’ve seen a great appetite by our existing residents to participate in our water-wise planting and garden in a box programs,” Broomfield Mayor Guyleen Castriotta said. “So there’s definitely a growing desire to reduce water consumption and conserve, and we’re trying to walk the walk to do it with our own properties.”

Like Lafayette and other cities,

Broomfield is beginning to rip watersucking turf out of public median spaces that are not used for sports fields or public enjoyment, and replace the grass with landscapes that use far less water.

Rogers and other state leaders mentioned a growing handful of other anti-turf efforts around Colorado: Lafayette has an ambitious public turf replacement series underway, with big demonstration projects replacing grass with low-water plantings, and educational signage so that the gardens can be used as a “shopping” list for homeowners wanting to do the same. The city also has programs offering homeowners $1 a square foot in new landscaping subsidies if they rip out grass.

“I’m a big advocate for practicing what we preach,” said Elizabeth Szorad, Lafayette’s sustainability coordinator.

Denver Parks and Recreation is replacing turfgrass with low-water landscaping in medians and odd-lot

spaces it controls after decades of city growth and change. One of the initial projects was a high-profile median at Quebec Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard, said deputy parks director Scott Gilmore. The parks department has multiple medians and scattered block-size spaces it controls but which are not useful for public park or athletic field use, such as a block at West 48th Avenue and Julian Street cut off from the larger Rocky Mountain Lake Park by Interstate 70 construction.

Denver Water is helping to pay for the work, which replaces 10 acres of traditional Kentucky bluegrass in the broad median area.

Fort Collins is preparing to overhaul its landscape ordinances with a restriction similar to Broomfield’s of no more than 30% turf at new home construction, Rogers said. Fort Collins and other cities are also studying bans on installation of artificial, plastic grass as a turf replacement, Rogers said.

Rocky Mountain Human Services wins Adams, Denver counties contract

The Colorado Department of Health Care Policy & Financing is redesigning its case management process, naming a Colorado firm to manage responses for Adams and Denver counties beginning November 1.

Colorado nonprofit group Rocky Mountain Human Services will provide streamlined case management services to individuals with disabilities or other complex needs requiring long-term, home, and community-based support.

The new contract is part of Colorado’s redesigned case management system intended to make it easier for people needing services to navigate the system and get the

care they need. It is designed to ensure that people have one place to go for questions and support and to improve the quality of care they receive.

“We are proud and honored to be selected as the Case Management Agency for Denver and Adams Counties,” said RMHS executive director Shari Repinski. “It’s essential to reduce the burden of a complex and siloed system of care by creating a more inclusive and streamlined Long Term Care system in Colorado that recognizes and caters to the diverse needs of individuals, regardless of their disability. Brighton Police Department now offering online reporting

The preparedness program focuses on older adults.

Brighton Police Department has launched an online reporting system at its newly updated website at www.brightonco.gov/police.

The online reporting system allows community members to submit a report directly to the police department from their smartphone or computer. It can be used to report criminal tampering, identity theft, lost property, theft, vandalism, and other matters.

All cases filed using the online reporting system will be reviewed by a police sergeant. This tool can only be used when the incident is not an emergency; no one was injured, no known suspects, and no physical evidence. All incidents that do not meet this criteria should be reported
