THORNTON – Members of the Brighton, Commerce City and Thornton police departments were on hand at Thimmig Elementary School Nov. 3.

Students from all three 27J Schools’ high schools – Riverdale Ridge, Brighton and Prairie View – lined Thimmig’s hallways. So did members of Prairie View’s band.

Outside waiting their turn in the celebration were an ambulance crew, the South Adams County Fire Department, two school mascots, 27J School District administrators and a 27J Schools board of education member.

Big trip Hernandez. a second-grader at Henderson’s Thimmig Elementary, suffers from leukodystrophy, a genetic disease affecting the tissue that bundles nerve fibers connected to nerve cells in the central nervous system. A statement from 27J Schools said the 7-year-old has “already outlived his doctors’ estimated life expectancy.”

He’s also a big fan of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League and, perhaps, a bigger fan of the Bucs quarterback, Tom Brady.

An unknown substance found in a ballot dropped in a Thornton drop box Nov. 2 has triggered safety protocols at the Adams County Clerk’s Office and an investigation by the Thornton Police, the County sheriff and the FBI. Adams County Public Information Officer William Porter said the suspicious ballot was collected from a Thornton drop box Nov. 2 and taken to the county building in Brighton for processing. An election staff member was preparing to open the ballot envelope when they noticed a white powder leaking from one of the holes in the envelope.

“We can’t process that ballot until we confirm it is safe or not, but there was enough of the substance in the envelope that it is presumed to be intentional,” Porter said. “We wanted to be transparent to let people know we have a ballot that is currently in a holding pattern until we discover what this substance is.”

Porter said the substance appeared to be flour but was sent off to a lab to determine just what it is.

Porter said the lab could take up to five days to complete an analysis of the powder to determine if it is benign or something dangerous.

New Fort Lupton development moves toward platting

Fort Lupton city councilors began the final push to plat the new High Pointe Hills development at their meeting Nov. 1.

During its Nov. 1 meeting, Fort Lupton City Council annexed 182 acres of land near state Highway 52 and Weld County Road 31, then agreed to zone the land for agricultural uses.

The applicant, Highway 52 General Partnership, wants to build a residential subdivision with some areas set aside for commercial businesses. Applicant JR Osborne told councilors he’d like to have a combination of singlefamily detached homes and homes on larger estates. Plans also call for a neighborhood park to run north and south through the land.

“We have a large amount of active

park space and open space (especially on the east side of the property),” Osborne said. “We did try to carry that all the way around the property.”

A yet-to-be-created metropolitan district will take care of on-property maintenance.

“I need about 750 mills to make ends meet,” he said. “We may have an HOA to help with the mills. I’ll take care of the internal stuff.”

Rising interest rates may dampen interest in buying homes.

“To do this, I need to get the district put in place,” Osborne said. “Everyone is in a wait-and-see mode, waiting to see what the midterms do. People are scared. When they are scared, they don’t know, and when they don’t know, they don’t know what they want to do.

People can’t be scared forever. That’s how these cycles work.”

Osborne told the council he plans to

continue to move forward.

“We’re going to get ready for the final plant,” Osborne said. “It’s still going to take me quite a while. But think there are townhomes that are going to sell if we can meet a price point. Now, people are quitting building, so it’s not going to get overblown. It’ll turn around quickly. We don’t have that much out there.”

“I like the diversity of the estates, the townhomes and the single-family,” said Councilman Claud Hanes.

The Nov. 1 discussion with the council about these future plans is not binding.

Other business Councilors also agreed to postpone an off-premise liquor license hearing for Family Dollar Stores to Tuesday, Dec. 6. Company officials didn’t provide enough information to the council about alcohol service training in mid-

October.

City attorney Andy Ausmus said officials with Family Dollar wanted to appear at the December hearing in person.

“It sounds like they have an extensive amount of information about their training,” Ausmus told the council.

“That’s not a problem,” Mayor Zo Hubbard said.

Council also accepted a preliminary plat for the southwest corner of the Coyote Creek development area. Staff notes said it will include 61 detached single-family homes and open space.

This is the fifth filing for the development.

At its meeting in mid-October, planning commission members asked the applicant, Kenneth Merritt, about maintenance of open space and maintenance of sidewalks along state Highway 52.

Fort Lupton eyes $25 million loan for wastewater work

Fort Lupton City Council OK’d an ordinance on first reading Nov. 1 that approves a $25 million loan from the Colorado Water Resources and Power Development Authority for tap fees related to the construction of wastewater treatment plant upgrades.

The interest rate cannot be higher

than 2.75 percent, according to the city’s ordinance. Funds will come from the city’s wastewater revenue budget.

When it comes back to the council for second reading on Nov. 29, it will declare an emergency based on “limited availability of low- or nointerest loans” and a desire to wrap up financing before the end of this year.

Council’s vote was unanimous.

“Twenty-five million is going right through us,” Mayor Zo Hubbard said.

Probation service fee Council also unanimously agreed to add a diversion/probation service fee for municipal court.

Defendants will pay $60 less under the amended ordinance .. a bit less than $300. Most of that ($220) is court fees based on 12-month alternative sentencing. The council agenda said

82 such cases could be figured into the 2023 budget, resulting in more than $9,800 in revenue.

According to staff notes, cases that qualify for diversion or probation have increased more than 250 percent in the past five years.

Brighton police investigating bank robbery STAFF REPORT

Brighton police are investigating a robbery at the First National Bank of Omaha in the 1600 block of East Bridge Street, according to a department tweet.

A press release said the department received a call from a bank employee about the robbery shortly before 11 a.m.

“Officers learned that the male suspect demanded cash while indicating that he had a weapon in his pocket,” the press release said. “The bank employee gave him the cash that also contained

campus and Bright Beginnings – were on a precautionary secure lockdown. Authorities gave the all-clear around 12:30 p.m. 27J Schools spokeswoman Janelle Asmus said, “...all students and staff are safe, and all schools have resumed normal schedules.”

The press release said the police department and the Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force are taking part in the investigation. Those with information should call the police department at 303-655-8740 or Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7876.

Colorado voters have until 7 p.m. Nov. 8 to return their ballots to their county clerk for counting. Porter said the incident has not stopped work in Adams County, but it did slow things down on Nov. 2 while clerk crews cleaned and sanitized the Thornton ballot box, the bag that was carrying it to the Clerk’s office, the vehicle that it was transported in, the tray the bag was emptied into and other equipment.

“We had to clean multiple surfaces and ballot boxes and trays and anything that envelope came into contact with,” he said. “We have done a number of things to make sure that every-

one, from the administrative side to the public, is safe. Right now, we don’t have confirmation.”

He said all 64 Colorado County Clerks have been notified of the incident and there have been no other instances reported so far.

Things have returned to normal, he said.

“Ultimately, this is why we have security protocols,” Porter said. “We don’t want to allow incidents like this to disrupt our elections. This is the new world we live in with evolving threats.

So the biggest thing is, we don’t want there to be a panic. We want to people to have confidence in the election.”

names, addresses and a box where they can sign their ballots. Porter said this envelope contains that voter information and said Thornton police and the FBI have spoken with the voter.

The clerks have not opened the ballot yet, he said. It is currently on hold.

If the chemical test of the substance determines it is safe, the ballot envelope will be opened and the ballot processed.

If tests show that it contains a dangerous substance, Porter said the ballot will marked spoiled and a new ballot will be issued to the voter.

“If it is found to be harmful, it will be in law enforcement’s hands and the ballot will be marked as damaged,” he said. “We will still make sure that voter is able to vote, regardless. Our job is to make sure every vote is counted and that will still be the case.”

Pioneer cemetery moves toward landmark status City Council considering status for one of Brighton’s earliest burial plots

Declaring Brighton’s 1863 Pioneer Cemetery a landmark is a great first step, City Councilors said Nov. 1, but they’d like to see it become a place residents could come and visit.

“I think it’d be nice to find a way to make it accessible,” Mayor Greg Mills said. “But I understand the need to secure it, too.”

Councilors approved the first reading of a plan to designate the small burial plot, at 148th and Bromley Lane, a historic landmark unanimously at their Nov. 1 meeting. It’s west of U.S. 85 and Brighton’s Elmwood Cemetery The plot is the final resting place for several of Brighton’s very first settlers. Senior Planner Emma Lane said it was the family cemetery for the families of James Blundell and Thomas Donelson, both early settlers in the area. According to Lane, the plot was initially owned by Mary E. Black, who sold it to Donelson in 1891.

“The property’s history after that is relatively sparse, but the property was annexed into the city in 1987 — 100 years after the city of Brighton’s incorporation,” Lane said.

It was owned by the Donelson family until 2002 when the city of Brighton purchased the plot for $10.

“In 1859, Thomas Donelson and James Blundell came to Denver in search of gold, as many people at the time did,” Lane said. “After failed attempts the men, with their families, settled in the Brighton area in 1860, staking their claims next to each other.”

Their wives were the first to be buried there, Mary Blundell in 1863 and Laura Donelson in 1864.

James Blundell left Brighton early in the next decade, returning to the area after becoming ill. He returned in 1884 and died, three years before

Brighton was incorporated as a city in 1887.

Donelson stayed, working as a farmer and making bricks.

“Buildings in early Denver and in Brighton were both built with Thomas Donelson’s bricks,” she said.

“Most of the men, women and children buried in the cemetery are part of the Blundell and Donelson families or were close friends. There are many descendants of both Blundell and Donelson families in Brighton still today.”

The last burial in the plot was in 1935.

“The historic pioneer cemetery retains value not only in its heritage as

the final resting place for Brighton’s first settlers but also in the architectural stylings of its headstones, which changed over time from the first person interred in 1863 to the last in 1935,” she said.

Lane said that history makes the plot — currently surrounded by a black metal fence and a padlocked gate — a good fit for a historic designation.

“With help from the Parks and Recreation Department and the city’s museum, the pioneer cemetery can be used as an educational tool and as an attraction for residents and visitors,” she said. “The cemetery will be a place for people to learn about the history of Brighton and its early settlers, some of whom are buried there.”

Councilors agreed, voting to approve their first reading by a 6-0 vote, with Councilors Clint Blackhurst and Mary Ellen Pollack absent from the meeting. The council is scheduled to vote on it a second and final time later this month.

Cool history The area is designated in city zoning maps for parks and open space, making it consistent with other uses.

Councilor Adam Cushing wondered if the plot could be opened to the public.

some of that history, too,” Cushing said.

Travis Haines, Brighton’s Parks and Recreation director said it’s not open yet but people can contact his office to visit. It’s closed because many of the headstones are old and fragile.

“We do not have it open, and we don’t have staff over there,” he said. “We maintain and mow it and take care of it, but if that is something you wish to do we can look into it,” Haines said. “We just don’t have the staff, and it’s kind of off the beaten path.”

Cushing said opening it open might be as simple as letting local historic groups stage cemetery walks and tours.

“We have the cemetery walk at Elmwood, which is really cool,” Cushing said. “Maybe just something like that, where we have a scheduled thing where people can walk through and learn the history.

I think it’s super interesting.”

Councilor Ann Taddeo agreed.

Taddeo is also a member of the city’s Historic Preservation group.

She said she abstained from voting when the pioneer cemetery plan was presented to that group so she could vote to approve it as a City Councilor. She suggested asking the city’s museum to work on staffing the cemetery.

Ukrainian refugee finds his spot fixing cars Despite language barriers and small toolboxes, Eugene is fitting in

When Russia invaded Ukraine, Yevhen Korotych’s whole town was bombed and his home destroyed. He barely escaped with his two children and his wife.

“I was a mechanical engineer in Ukraine when Russia invaded the first time. They took Crimea, and I lost my career as a mechanical engineer. I thought, what am I going to do?” said Korotych. “So I taught myself how to be a mechanic and became a very successful mechanic in Ukraine — until they bombed us again this year, and I lost my job.”

But they did get out and made their way to the United States. Korotych, 34, goes by Eugene now. When U.S. immigration officials interviewed him and asked if he knew someone in the states, he told them his sister and brother-in-law live in Commerce City. Korotych and his family moved to Commerce City and started to look for work.

That’s when they met Victor Robért and their lives changed Victor Robért is French Creole, originally from Louisiana, and has owned the Christians Brother Automotive in Broomfield for three

years. He purchased Christians Brothers Automotive in Commerce City as of August 1.

Like Korotych, Robért had taken a different path to retail car repairs.

Robért worked as a research scientist until he turned 52. He’d spent 20 years researching and developing new therapies for a kind of blood disease where the body produces too many red blood cells.

“So your blood becomes very thick, like syrup. It’s very painful and can be fatal. I spent 20 years researching and developing therapy,” Robért said.

He retired at 52 only to realize he’d made a mistake. His children were still in school and his wife and friends were still working. He began looking for new opportunities, settling on the Christian-based auto shop and purchasing his first franchise.

“I just fell in love with the company, their morality, honesty, and integrity, and they truly care about every owner, every employee, every customer. We are always a phone call away if something upset the customer and needs to ahold of the vice president or someone at corporate,” Robért said.

Robért said the automotive industry has a reputation for taking advantage of people.

“Christian Brothers does not take advantage of people. We believe in taking care of our customers. It was founded in 1982 and now 2022 and there are only 258 franchises.

They just are very particular where they’re going to put them and who they sell them to,” he said.

Language barriers Robért began looking for help and found Korotych on an internet job site. Seeing Korotych was from Ukraine, Robért asked if he knew English, and he said no. The pair initially communicated through Google Translate, until they’d set up an interview.

“He came in for an interview with a translator, his brother-in-law.

During the interview, I had a good conversation with him, and I liked him. He was excited about the company because he’s a Christian, he loved the name. He did research and found that we are faith-based and is excited about working with us,” Robért said.

Butterflies flutter for Dia de los Muertos

The Butterfly Pavilion released over 450 monarch butterflies into their conservatory for Dia de los Muertos.

Monarch butterflies are tied to the Day of the Dead and hispanic culture, according to Jesse Martinez, executive director of the Mexican Cultural Center.

“When you see a monarch butterfly, it’s known to be the spirit or the soul of a loved one visiting you,” he said.

He said that butterflies are seen in numerous different themes and symbols in Mexi-

can culture.

Not only do they play an important part in culture, but also in the environment.

The animals begin to arrive in November after their 2,000 mile journey to their wintering grounds in Mexico and the California coast, according to Shiran Hershcovich, Lepidopterist Manager at the pavilion.

Monarch butterflies are important pollinators. Hershcovich explained that one out of every three bites of food come from the work of pollinators.

However, they are endangered. She’s hoping that events like this help raise awareness surrounding conservation

that I can do the job,” Robért said.

The toolbox became another hurdle. Korotych bought some -with the help of his sponsors -- and Robért his staff donated others.

“Eugene has a small toolbox. We called it a Barbie toolbox,” Robért said. “He doesn’t know I’m going to buy him a larger toolbox. He didn’t start out making that much, so I called him, I’m giving you a raise, you deserve more than you’re making.”

Korotych is working full-time

five days a week, two nights a week. He’s taking English lessons and learning to speak English.

Robért said his communication has improved within two months since they met him. He can also understand a lot more too.

“I’m excited to work with Christian Brothers,” said Korotych “I admire him for coming here and is doing a great job. It’s just a blessing to have him here in the shop. He’s a positive influence on everybody,” Robért said.

Laurel Leah (Olsen) Swarr May 8, 1944 - October 31, 2022

Laurel was born in Oakland, California May 8, 1944 to Virginia Payton and Bjarne Mathias Olsen.

She was married to Herbert Ryde Swarr August 23, 1963. Together they moved to Brighton, Colorado to start their family.

and Morgan were her pride and joy and she considered them her own “gifts from God”. She spent many years attending school activities, sporting events, volunteering as room mom and leading the Booster Club. She was her boys’ and grandkids biggest fan.

Laurel’s life centered around her family and serving the community. At School District 27J she was the School Board President for nearly a decade in the 80’s and 90’s and also worked with special needs students at Brighton High School. She loved working with each one and felt that they taught her so much.

Laurel is survived by her husband Herbert, sons Eric (Vicki), Luke (Sandy) and Morgan (Tina), her beloved grandchildren Jerrett (Valerie), Mason, Kaden, Tyler (Sarah and great-granddaughter Abigail), Andrew (Allison), Matthew, Austin, Allison and Alayna and her special nephew Bryce Olsen.

Her friends Theresa and Jim Hood, Sidney Linzmaier, Diann LaVere were very dear to her heart. She was preceded in death by her parents, much loved Aunt Lorraine Poulson, Aunt Norma and Uncle Leif Olsen and brother Bruce Olsen.

During her years as an active member of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Brighton she started the Courtesy service, providing meals for the ill in the community. She also served her church as an Elder and Deacon and by organizing Mother-Daughter Banquets and Women’s Association activities.

Laurel was known for her generosity and warm heart. She loved others deeply but fiercely loved her family. Her sons Eric, Luke

Water tank christened City of Brighton officials cut the ribbon Nov. 1 on its new, 2 million gallon elevated tank at Water Tower Park. It’s in operation -- two months ahead of schedule -- storing treated water for the city. Construction started in June 2021.

A city statement said the new tank “adds support to the existing five water storage tanks that are used to store treated water from the water treatment plant prior to distribution to customers.”.

“This new tank supports our growing city, but most importantly, helps us to keep our community safe,” said Brighton Utilities Director Marc Johns in the statement.

Fracking may cause health effects, a Broomfield survey says

As Thornton prepares to vote on a proposed 10-well fracking site at the southeast corner of the E-470 and I-25 intersection, research from the Colorado School of Public Health may point to increased health effects for those living, working and going to school near the wells.

The survey was in response to the development of 84 wells across six different pads in Broomfield. The results said those living within one mile of the wells reported significantly greater frequencies of upper respiratory and acute symptoms than respondents living more than two miles away.

It also found those living within two miles reported that their children experienced significantly greater frequencies of lower respiratory, gastrointestinal and acute response symptoms than those living greater than two miles away.

Though, certain factors impacted the symptoms that were reported, such as the level of concern for odors, noise and air pollution from the development.

Lisa McKenzie, associate professor at Colorado School of Public Health and an author of the survey, explained one flaw with self-reported surveys is bias. People more likely concerned with the development may attribute the pollution to certain health effects.

“When you do surveys like this, people are self-reporting and people have biases,” she said.

She provided an example of someone who is concerned about

pollen and has a runny nose. With a perception bias, they may attribute the pollen to their health symptoms.

However, she said 60 epidemiological studies around oil and gas across the United States have been consistent in showing that people living nearest to oil and gas are more likely to have children with adverse birth outcomes, such as low birth weights and premature births.

The studies also show that children with congenital heart defects are more likely to be living near oil and gas wells. The same goes for asthma.

Stargate Charter School sits about 1.5 miles south of the development and Little Lights Christian Early Learning Center is about .5 miles south.

Stargate Executive Director of Academics Kate Sivarajah said the school has no comment on the site.

Arlene Masterson, owner of Little Lights Christian Early Learning Center, did not respond to requests for comment.

Within a half mile of the site, there are 56 parcels and of those parcels, 35 are believed to have residential uses. The rest are primarily commercial.

Exceeding standards Civitas Resources Inc. bought the land from Sands Partners LLC and will use 3.6 acres to develop 10 wells.

However, the rest of the land plans to be developed as well. A proposal is awaiting city council approval for 1.3 million square feet of warehouse development next to the fracking site.

Some of the emission reduction measures include using electric equipment on site, Tier 4+ fracturing pumps, ongoing 24-hour computerized monitoring, response to Ozone Action Days and early implementation of Leak Detection and Repair inspections.

As well, there will be a water quality testing program to anyone with an available water source within a half mile of the radius of the location and the fluids used will be PFAS-free.

The development is also required to keep the City informed of relevant information through notification and reporting that would not otherwise be required. An annual review, evaluation, and update of the Cumulative Impacts Plan will also be provided.

Mayor Jan Kulmann, who is also an oil and gas engineer, asked for electric fracks, which she said are much quieter and better than Tier 4. McKenzie said noise is a primary complaint of the sites and can interfere with children’s learning at schools.

Health effects During the Oct. 18 study session regarding the topic, Kulmann asked if the proposal is similar to the Broomfield developments and Erika Delaney Lew, assistant city attorney, said this proposal includes more

requirements than the Broomfield agreement.

However, McKenzie said many studies indicate a correlation between oil and gas developments and health effects.

“We know that the total evolved organic compounds coming out (of fracking wells) together have been associated with respiratory symptoms. McKenzie said it all comes down to exposure and concentrations. If a child lives near the site and goes to school near the site, there is a potential for 24-hour exposure.

Scientists also know that benzene, a pollutant emitted from wildfires, fueling stations and oil and gas developments, is a carcinogen and the effects are felt from decades of exposure. High concentrations lead to cancer.

She noted the fracking sites probably don’t have as high of concentrations as the past studies have found. However, the effects of continuous and repeated low-level exposure to benzene for children isn’t yet known.

After the results of the survey were published, McKenzie said Broomfield county employees did attempt to stop a fracking pad from being installed in Weld County.

“County employees felt the survey results were concerning,” she said.

Less-obvious signs point to possible COVID-19 upsurge Omicron-targeted vaccines are available

The omicron variant is causing milder illnesses than earlier variants of COVID-19, but Elizabeth Carlton implores Coloradans not to underestimate it.

“It still killed a lot of people,” said Carlton, an associate professor at the Colorado School of Public Health. “So it’s no joke.”

Coronavirus data watchers see signs of a possible upswing in COVID-19 cases in the coming months and are working to minimize the impact of upswing on Colorado’s health care system by imploring residents to stay up to date on vaccinations and to take prudent measures to protect others if they become ill.

Reported COVID-19 cases plateaued in the past several weeks.

There are less than 900 cases across the state, down from surges in excess of 3,000 cases in June and more than 20,000 in January.

Colorado is also far from the bed crises hospitals weathered during some of the worst months of the pandemic. In late October, roughly 3% of hospital beds were in use by coronavirus patients, according to Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment data.

But the numbers don’t tell the

whole story, Carlton said.

“Reported cases are the tip of the iceberg,” Carlton said.

The percent of tests coming back positive has jumped up from around 5% in early October to about 9%.

And wastewater data from the Denver area also indicates the virus is more prevalent.

Carlton doesn’t know for sure what’s causing it, but after two years, pandemic restrictions have loosened everywhere. The way people “mix” with each other is different.

“Not just school, but all the ways people gather is probably closer to pre-pandemic levels than it has been before,” Carlton added.

Spikes have been tracked in the fall and it is unclear exactly why, she said. It could be that the colder weather leads people to gather more indoors. Or it could be due to changes in humans’ immune system at this time of year.

With flu cases typically rising around the same time of year, health officials are doubling down on their messaging about vaccines and haven’t ruled out that a more severe version of coronavirus can appear, as strains have in the past.

not take the vaccine, like those who have imparied immune systems. Health officials recommend a mindset that minimizes risks for exposure to oneself and others.

“People who are at higher risk of severe outcomes from COVID-19 or who interact with people at higher risk should consider their individual risk, which may include taking additional precautions such as masking and avoiding crowded public spaces,” said a statement from the Colorado State Joint Information Center.

People at high risk of becoming

seriously ill from COVID include those older than 65, people who are medically obese or overweight, people with other medical issues.

For those who are infected, Paxlovid, an oral antiviral pill that targets COVID-19, is available.

Another form of treatment is “monoclonal antibodies,” which are given as infusions, either through an IV or through injections, like with a vaccine. They help a person’s immune system recognize and respond to the virus.
