sitional Energy is the first to raise private funding to provide 100% of the cost to produce geothermal energy on the Nevada oil site.

The Nevada oil field pilot is part of a larger project using Transitional Energy technology with funding from the U.S. Department of Energy Geothermal Technologies’ Office Wells of Opportunity grants.

According to company officials, Transitional Energy’s plans for its next pilot program are in Colorado.

They will work with major oil and gas companies and on the utility side with United Power, which serves Weld and Adams counties.

Transitional Energy is a majority women-owned geothermal energy and development company that converts oil and gas waste streams into renewable energy.

Derichsweiler was the first Native American to graduate from Aurora Central High School and was valedictorian of the Colorado School of Mines’ chemical engineering and petroleum refining program and received an MBA finance from Pepperdine University. Her grandmother is of Alaskan descent.

In 2018, Derichsweiler, Burke and their executive team, all with experience in the oil refinery business, talked about helping oil and gas companies reduce carbon emissions to get to net carbon zero.

The Weld RE-8 School Board heard pleas from parents to keep the Fort Lupton High School football program during the board’s May 26 meeting.

The ideas ranged from examining other salaries in the district, namely Superintendent Alan Kaylor’s, to a reclassification for the next two-year cycle, which will begin in 2024.

The school board brought up the idea of cutting the sport earlier this month in a workshop session.

The estimated cost savings was $39,000. The district has an extra $1.9 million for next year’s budget, but some of that has to go to infrastructure needs and increases in teachers’ salaries, among other things.

Kaylor told the board it budgeted $321,000 for high-school sports programs and spent $305,000 as of May 26. Jessica Holbrook, the district’s director of finance and business services, presented a draft budget to the board May 26.

It included no plans to disband the football program.

“We want answers,” Rodriguez said. “We want decisions that place the interests of the students first.”

BROOMFIELD — Some 400 Brighton High School students received their diplomas at commencement exercises May 25 at 1stBank Center in Broomfield.

There was some advice as the graduates begin the next phase of their lives, too, including “be proud

of your scars” from class valedictorian Mariah Niday, and from class speaker and BHS English teacher Ted Halbert, who told the grads, “We educate ourselves to be good humans. You understand the social contract, that how we treat each other matters.”

More than 80 members of the Class of 2022 achieved grade point averages of at least 3.8.

New coffee house helps employees with life skills Taza opens in Adams County government building

Helping young adults learn life lessons so they can help themselves, their families and their communities is the mission at Taza Coffee House in the Adams County government building.

“Our mission is to work with young adults and provide a safe house for them to continue to grow and to overcome their problems, challenges, obstacles that they go through,” said Maria Borrego, executive director of Community Uplift Partnership, or CUP, which operates Taza. “We also provide a healthy workplace for them.”

CUP is a nonprofit coffee house that began seven years ago as an outreach program in Commerce City.

Borrego, CUP and the Landing Place Church first established a mobile food bank pantry, worked with the Adams 14 Hope Center to assist families and provide thanksgiving outreaches.

Then at the height of the recession in 2008 and 2009, a carpet service center owned by Shea Properties in Commerce City was sitting empty.

The building was taken over by Oakwood Homes, remodeled and turned into a coffee shop.

“They put out a bid for a nonprofit to operate the coffee shop and Keely Thompson, the previous founder of CUP, had always dreamed of building a coffee house working with young adults,” Borrego said. “It was her idea.”

CUP then shifted its mission to serving young adults, and in 2018, opened a second coffee house — the Reunion Coffee House.

CUP opened its third coffee house, Taza, on Feb. 1.

Taza is Spanish for cup, and the space is designed to feel like a home.

“We named this coffee house Taza because Adams County has the highest population for Latinos,” Borrego said.

Not only does Taza provide jobs for young adults, but it also teaches them life skills by providing a 12week paid training course. The class focuses on self-awareness, introspection, leadership and character development, Borrego said.

“When you learn life skills or job skills, you build a relationship,” Borrego said. “It was the idea behind the nonprofit. We used the same mission with families such as women and children.”

When a young adult is not healthy in their household, Borrego said the whole house struggles.

“If we help the young adult, we know we’re helping families,” Borrego said.

Chris Churches is the coffee house director and has been with CUP for four years. She sets up new coffee houses, runs the day-to-day operations and hires the employees.

She started with CUP first as a donor, then worked as a barista and eventually moved up to shift lead and manager and now director. Churches ran her own nonprofit and a children’s theater company for 20 years.

“Management also takes a twohour training to have crucial conversations within the workplace, how to identify people skills and build teamwork,” Churches said.

at, and I used to dread going to work, and I look forward to being at work,” Torrez said.

Jacqulyn Churches has been with CUP for two years.

“I started as just a barista, and now, I do the marketing for all three-coffee houses, videos and signage,” Churches said. “I love working here.”

The Cup also operates the Anythink Coffee shop in the Thornton Anythink Library and is planning to open a fourth location in the Greyhound Park Development in 2023.

Prairie View grad returns to college after Army stint Ben Meraz to play football at Austin College in Texas

Four years of service in the U.S. Army did little to tamp down former Prairie View High School quarterback Ben Meraz’s interest in playing college football.

Meraz, who graduated from PVHS in 2016, chose Austin College, an NCAA Division III school in Sherman, Texas, for his next stop. He called it “the best of all possible worlds” for academics, athletics and being able to work for his father’s construction business.

“It was close to home, they recruited me super hard and built a good rela-

tionship with me,” Meraz said. “And then academically, I felt like I could take advantage of a lot of good opportunities that wouldn’t be available elsewhere.”

He will be able to play football, too., as he did at Mesa State University before entering the Army. The Kangaroos won one game in nine tries a season ago. Six to seven schools showed an interest.

Meraz wants to study business finance, then pursue a master’s degree in construction management.

The ongoing pandemic didn’t play a part in his recruiting process. But joining the NCAA’s transfer portal, which allows students to place their names in an online data base to indicate a desire to change schools, did.

“I’d say things were different just because I obviously don’t have any recent film of me playing football,” he

said. “So, I’d send them videos of me doing workouts and drills to pair with my high-school stuff.

“Things were different as well because I talked to way more schools this time than when I did in high school,” Meraz explained. “I definitely had to ask a lot more questions about stuff like about living in the town, going to school there, types of questions I didn’t think about in high school.”

Meraz still has four years of eligibility.

“I’m pretty excited and nervous. It’s been a long time since I last played,” Meraz said.“But after a couple practices, I feel like I’ll be like a normal player again.

“I hope people can use situations like mine in that you can always chase a dream of yours,” he added. “Just because it doesn’t work out the first time doesn’t mean it’ll never work out.”

Fort Lupton’s Moll opts for basketball in Florida

There aren’t many people who can say they are thankful for anything to do with the pandemic.

Fort Lupton’s Conner Moll can.

“The pandemic closed a lot of gyms.

I had to find parks and stuff to go to,” Moll said. “It messed up the recruiting process. A lot of colleges were like, ‘We love you. We don’t have the money for it.’ It played a huge part. At the end of the day, everything happens for a reason.

“I’m grateful for COVID now,” he added. “It was a hard few years. It really helped me out.”

Moll signed a collegiate letter of intent May 26 to play basketball and study business entrepreneurship at Keiser University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

“Honestly, I had no idea about it until my mom found it,” Moll said. “I was sending emails out. I was trying to do anything to find a school. My mom was like, ‘Go to Duke University,’ things like that. I was like, ‘Let’s be realistic here.’”

Moll went to a Keiser-sponsored camp at Colorado Christian University in Lakewood.

“I was actually hoping to be signed

by Colorado Christian so I can stay in state,” he said. “But I met the coach.

You could tell he was watching for me.

I thought this might be the place. He definitely did his work and tried to make it possible so I could go there. It showed me he wanted me. It wasn’t an athlete for him to sign.”

Moll and his mother took a campus visit.

“He took care of my mom and I very carefully,” Moll said. “We did a lot of stuff besides looking at the basketball side and the academic side.

It sealed the deal when we went out there. I was looking at two others. It was basically no contest after I found this one.”

Outgoing athletic director Cora Lanter called Moll “a real student and an athlete.”

“I saw a positive person in the hall,” she said. “He never found his way to the office for anything. That’s tough to do as a senior, to maintain that poise.”

FLHS boys basketball coach Jim Roedel called Moll “a leader who has the ability to do anything you want.”

“You have friends who care about you. You have a school here that will help you,” Roedel said. “For you to come here, in a town this size and accomplish what you did here? I am proud of you.”

Moll wants to start a clothing business this summer. The eventual goal is to own his own business with his own style of clothing.

“I am not big on Colorado. I love it because it’s my home. And I love Fort Lupton, and it will always be home,” Moll said. “But I’ve wanted to move to a bigger city. I don’t like the weather here. It’s nice in the Sunshine State.

I love the humidity, too. My parents hate it. Right now, it’s looking like my new home.”

“You are a great athlete, and you have amazing parents,” said outgoing FLHS Principal John Biner. “Nobody sits where you are sitting by yourself.

You are great in the hallways, and you are fantastic to watch playing basketball.”

“I haven’t been nervous or scared.

I’ve done everything I can to prepare myself for this moment,” Moll said.

“It feels like more of an accomplishment and a pat on my back to myself for all the hard work I’ve put in.”

New Weld County public works director started at the ground level

Curtis Hall started with the Weld County Public Works Road and Bridge Division in 1996 as a seasonal worker, and today, he is the county’s new public works director.

“I am grateful the board of commissioners has entrusted me with this position,” Hall said. “I know my experience and background will provide me with a good foundation to continue to lead this team of amazing employees who plan, design, build and maintain the county’s infrastructure.”

Fort Lupton Police Blotter Here are the police reports for May 14 to May 20 to the Fort Lupton Police Department. Not every call made to the police is not listed on this report.

May 14 Police issued a summons to a Loveland man, 37, for criminal mischief and assault in the 60th block of Grand Avenue.

An employee of Martin Marietta reported a vehicle trailer and tools stolen from a construction site in the 1200 block of Weld County Road 6.

The case is under investigation.

Police arrested a Fort Lupton man, 36, in the 100 block of Sixth Street for domestic violence menacing charges.

He is being held on bond at the Weld County Jail.

May 15 A Denver man, 20, was taken into custody at Ninth Street and Rollie Avenue for DUI, protection order violation, driving while license is revoked and possession of marijuana by a minor. He is being held on bond
