For 31 years, Angeles Navarro has taught generations of students in the Weld Re-8 School District, from elementary to high school.

Navarro migrated from Guanajuato, Mexico to Fort Lupton and worked in the agriculture fields around town before learning English and getting her teaching credentials.

For Brighton Police Chief Paul Southard, COVID-19 was quite literally a nightmare.

In a speech broadcast over the Platte Valley Medical Center public address system on May 13, he thanked the hospital for helping him recover from a 15-day long COVID-induced daze.

“During those 15 days on a ventilator, I experienced terrifying hallucinations, more real than any dream,” Southard said.

Southard returned to the hospital on May 13 to take a “Survivor Walk” down the halls, thanking the staff that saved him. Before the walk, he addressed the entire hospital over the public address system.

Southard said in his speech that when he and his wife Karen arrived at the emergency room on March 24, 2020, he was in very poor condition.

“That’s the last thing I remember until 15 days later, when I heard someone saying my name and asking me if I knew where I was,” Southard said.

When Southard tried to get out of bed, he could not stand and had no idea where he was but could see people walking around in personal protective equipment. Then the medical staff told him he had contracted COVID-19.

Southard acknowledged the terrible toll of the disease, noting he was

James “Jim” William Arthurs July 24, 1933 - April 26, 2022

James “Jim” William Arthurs, 88, of Brighton passed away April 26, 2022.

Jim was born July 24, 1933, in Mason City, Iowa to John “Hank” F. and Bernice M. (Blankenheim) Arthurs, he was their only child. His family moved to Marshalltown, Iowa where he graduated from St. Mary’s High School. Jim also graduated from the University of Minnesota and was a veteran of the United States Navy.

Jim was a member of St. Augustine’s Parish. He had served on the board of Brighton Community Hospital, and had been a member of Brighton Housing Authority, Colorado Funeral Directors Assn., Colorado Coroners Assn., Rotary and Kiwanis.

He married Priscilla Lynne Hooven June 20, 1956, in Marshalltown, Iowa. They had three children, Patrick, Rebecca, and Ellen.

In 1965 Jim and Priscilla moved from Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Brighton where Jim started his work as funeral director and later owner of Rice Funeral Chapel. During this time he also served as Adams County Coroner for 16 years.

Jim is survived by his wife Priscilla, son, Pat (Terree) Arthurs of Brighton, daughters Becky (Scott) Backlund of Lakewood and Ellen Arthurs of Aurora. Grandsons - Jim (Crystal McDowell) Arthurs of Arvada and John (Sumer) Arthurs, and great grandson Henry Arthurs of Brighton.

After retirement he enjoyed taking care of his yard, family vacations in Steamboat Springs and spending time with his

Arthur (Art) Vigil born in Sapello, New Mexico on March 11th 1936 to his mother Elvira and father Amadeo Vigil. Art passed away at his residence, the Vigil Family ranch on April 25th, 2022. Art is lovingly remembered by his sisters Mary and Viola. Children Angelo Vigil, Alex Vigil, Arlette, and Lila Vigil. His grandchildren Brenda, Maria, Isabel, Bernadette, Gabriel, Vangie, Dennis, Travis, James, Christina, Ashley, Ron, Jacob, Briana, Alexis, Janessa, and Sara. Also, remembered 23 greatgrandchildren.

Art was previously a resident in Brighton,

Colorado where he worked for the City of Brighton for 15 years.

He spent his most recent years in Trementina, New Mexico cared for by his son Angelo Vigil and Granddaughter Maria Vigil. Art loved Gardening in his yard, spending time maintaining his ranch, and telling his life stories to his grandchildren. Arts ranch will always be his place of remembrance for his family.

Scott Alan Jaquith

March 28, 1956 - April 24, 2022

Scott Alan Jaquith passed away on Sunday, April 24, 2022, in Denver Colorado at the age of 66, a life-long resident of Commerce City, Colorado.

Scott was born the second child of Philip and Doyne Jaquith on March 28, 1956 at St. Joseph’s hospital in Denver, Colorado. After graduating from Adams City High School in 1974, Scott entered the Navy.

He returned to Commerce City in the early 1980s and resumed working with his father in the construction trade. He became a master craftsman in linoleum, tile and Formica work.

In 2000, Scott was elected as a Councilman to the Commerce City Council and served for eight years. Scott then spent 17 years at the Deck Super Store where he worked through the end of his life. His co-workers at the Deck Super Store became his second family.

Scott was a good friend to many people, always kind and ready to share a laugh. Though his friendships and acquaintances spanned a wide spectrum, his closest were childhood friends.

Scott is survived by his sister, Sandra Jaquith of Lafayette, Colorado; his brother Steven Jaquith and sister-in-law, Barbara Jaquith, of Aurora, Colorado; and two nieces and a nephew, Sarah Jaquith of Silverthorne, Colorado, Lindsay Jaquith of Macedonia, Ohio, and Misha Jaquith of Aurora, Colorado.

A memorial service with be held for Scott Jaquith on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at 2p.m. at Goode Centennial United Methodist Church at 6381 Olive St., Commerce City, Colorado.

Robert, Robert, Berto, Bobby, Pocho Leyva Lizarraga August 27, 1970 - May 10, 2022

Roberto Leyva-Lizarraga was born and passed in Mazatlan, Sinaloa on the Pacific Coast of Mexico.

He was born August 27, 1970 to parents Tomas and Lorna. Pocho grew up surfing, fishing and working both the sea the beach of his beloved home.

Berto came to the US as a young man and was welcomed into the Lauer family when he married Wendi. Despite their divorce, he remained a part of the Lauer family until his passing.

Bobby spent several years working at Purifoy Chevrolet where he was always grateful for his

first job in the US. Robert eventually moved on to work for Agfinity. He worked there the rest of his short life.

He is survived by his greatest pride, his son Deiter and was loved all who knew him.

He will be remembered for his loyalty, his strong work ethic, and his wonderful sense of humor.

A celebration of his life and rosary will be conducted on Friday May 20, 2022 at Tabor Rice Funeral Home 75 S.13th Ave Brighton, CO

DENVER -- The Adams 14 School District will have to reorganize, thanks to a pair of actions from the state board of education May 10.

The board removed the district’s accreditation and ordered it to partner with TNTP (once known as the New Teacher Project) as the reorganization process begins.

TNTP is an organization that tries to line up effective teachers for poor and minority students. The district has recorded low test scores for several years, to the point that the state had to intervene.

A statement from the school district called the action “unexpected and capricious” and said it would challenge the decision “across relevant avenues” in seeking a reversal.

Schools in the district remain open, and state and federal funding remains in place, according to the Adams 14 School District.

The district has been on the state’s academic watch list since 2010 because

As part of its May 10 rulings, the state board asked the state attorney general’s office to prepare written orders to reflect the decision.

The district received the two lowest ratings in the state district accountability system since the state enacted its Accountability Law in 2009. The state board said even though ratings have been on hold because of the pandemic, the district has been on an accountability clock since 2010. The statement said the board has to direct action to schools and districts that stay on that clock for five years in a row. One of the available options, the statement said, is a district reorganization process.

Four years ago, the state approved a district proposal to turn over management of the district to an external partner for four years. In February, the district severed ties with that management firm, MGT Consulting.

In its May 10 statement, the district said it presented a proposed plan to the state. The district said, “none of the decisions made today (May 10) resulted in any positive contribution to the children of Adams 14.”

“Despite the fact that Adams 14 closely followed the guidance of the state board and (Colorado Department of Education) officials to provide a detailed turnaround plan that met their expectations, the state board moved the goalposts and took the unexpected and capricious actions of voting to suspend district accreditation and explore potential district reorganization,” the district said.

A press statement from the state board said reorganizing the district could take upwards of a year. The first step, according to the statement, is an organization planning committee with representatives from neighboring school districts, including Brighton 27J, Adams 12 Five Star Schools and the Mapleton School District.

After that decision, the community and the Adams 14 school board asked the state to leave the district alone.

The school district said it would convene community meetings to understand the decision “and how they can play an important role in remedying this injustice.”

“All Adams 14 schools and the district as a whole continue to operate as usual,” the school district added. “This district will continue to play a vital role in the lives of Commerce City students and families for decades to come.”

“Unlike many others, I was fortunate to have survived due to heroic measures carried out by a fantastic group of professionals at this hospital. I’m here with you today, “ he said. “Unfortunately, nearly one million people in the United States have died due to COVID-related complications. Without the expert care from providers like you, how many more may have succumbed to this dreaded virus.”

Southard was released from Platte Valley about three weeks later, on April 15. As he was wheeled out of the hospital front entrance, members of the Brighton Police Department, Brighton Fire Rescue District, the city of Brighton, PVMC, and other local agencies applauded his recovery, and members of the police department saluted him.

Southard is not the first COVID survivor to return to the hospital to say thanks, according to hospital chaplain Rosalie Osian. It’s become a tradition, she said.

“We had five patients visit us the past few days taking the ‘Survivor Walk.’ Three patients were admitted here with COVID in early 2020, and the other two later. We’re so excited and they are doing well. We wish that more would come,” Osian said.

Kurt Gensert, Chief Nursing Officer COO at Platte Valley, said Southard’s survival was due to the care team coming together despite not having any background knowledge on the treatment of the virus. Instead, they had to base their treatment on intuition, trading stories with other hospitals.

As the pandemic wore on and science improved it became more of a cookbook approach, Gensert said.

“When Paul arrived, we initially figured out just what was happening in our country at the very beginning during those early days in March,” Gensert said. “When we think about the gravity of his illness in retrospect, with Paul’s instance, he was either the first or second case admitted that we did not benefit from knowing anything about how to treat the disease.”

It’s good to see him now, Gensert said.

“He was especially inspirational to the care team because we remember

him being in that very foggy place, but also sort of scary place not knowing what to do,” Gensert said. “Of course, we had no vaccine at that point. And our care teams were showing up to work every day preparing about themselves in their own families, and with PPE,” he added.

But Southard said his survival happened because of the care he got.

“You are all truly angels who brought me back from the brink. Without your dedication, many of us would not be here today. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you, my wife Karen, my family and my friends thank you, as do many more families who didn’t have the experience to lose a loved one during the pandemic,” Southard said.

His wife Karen, agreed.

“I like to say to the staff for taking such well care of my husband. The physicians, the nurses, the respiratory therapists, the CNAs environmental services kept everything so safe and clean and nutritional services,” she said. “I can imagine it was scary, it was a team effort, and they’re saving lives here. I love this hospital, the people, and the leadership. Thank you so much.”

Front Range Community College names next president

Dr. Colleen Simpson will take the reins of Front Range Community College as its next president after current President Andy Dorsey retires Aug. 1.

She will be FRCC’s first Black president and the second Black woman president in the Colorado community college system, according to a news release.

“It’s an incredible honor,” she said.

Prior to landing in Colorado, Simpson was the administrator for retention and student success, academic affairs at Bronx Community College within the City University of New York system and vice president of student services and regional learning centers at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College. In her past roles, she’s focused on removing barriers for students wanting to go to college, and she plans to continue that work.

“We want to make sure that all students have access and opportunity,” she said.

Some of those barriers can be financial or based on academic backgrounds. She hopes that any applicant who is accepted to FRCC will end up graduating and earning a familysustainable wage.

Removing barriers will create a more inclusive environment, she said.

“Everyone has their own lived experiences and so how do you ensure that everyone has worth within the journey?” she said. “Whether it’s the person who is for the first time learning about pronouns or learning about a new culture, how do you ensure that that person feels valid and validated so that the growth can continue?”

Simpson also noted her experience leading a Hispanic-serving institution. In New York City, the Bronx Community College was 50% Hispanic in the 1990s. That experience will benefit FRCC, she said.

“We are in a time of growth here within the United States and also within community colleges where we’re seeing a shift in our student demographics,” she said. “The growth is within our Latinx community, and I want to ensure that Front Range is

positioned so that success continues for our changing student demographics.”

In addition to growth in certain populations, she also sees FRCC supporting economic growth within Colorado through education and job training. The skills students take from FRCC will hopefully benefit the surrounding communities.

“The ultimate goal is that students will leave us better than when they started,” she said.

Future challenges Declining enrollment is a challenge higher education faces all over the country, Simpson said, and she looks forward to overcoming that at FRCC. She calls for innovative solutions and engaging with students who aren’t going to community colleges.

She sees academic excellence — a strength she thinks FRCC has — as a way to fix those issues.

“That tradition of excellence is going to ensure that we meet the changing needs of our students and the community,” she said.

She comes to the job with excitement.

“My purpose is to ensure that every student within that region knows that college is possible,” Simpson said. “I am committed to inspiring innovation, and more importantly, ensuring that we are advocating for an inclusive education for all students.”

“I’m very happy because I am seeing faces that I haven’t seen in years,” Navarro said.

Her family, former students, colleagues and members of the community were also happy to see Navarro enjoy the tribute in her honor.

Most of the speakers recalled that apart from being an educator, Angeles is a charismatic person who has always stood up for her students and colleagues when it was needed.

Former student Bianca Jaquez recalled, “She wasn’t the scary type like other teachers you don’t trust.

You can literally tell her anything, and it was just great.”

In a letter read by her daughter, Rosalie Martinez, former principal and teacher in Weld Re-8 schools said “There are many things I have learned in my profession. But what I know about teachers is this. First, they must know their subject matter. Secondly, they must know how to impart that knowledge effectively to their students. And, most importantly, they must support and build their students’ self-confidence about their ability to learn about who they are and about where they come from. Mrs. Navarro is fully competent in her subject matter, and from what I’ve observed in the activities and awards assemblies, her students have learned from her teaching.’”

Although this year was her last teaching Spanish at Fort Lupton High School, she wasn’t able to fully enjoy it because she had to take a leave of absence for health reasons. Just recently she went back to the high school to finish the year but not as a teacher.

Despite the health issues that came up, Navarro enjoyed the dances, hugs, memories and warm affection that were present throughout the ceremony.

“I am happy and thankful with the community because this is my home,” said Navarro. ”Everything has a beginning and an ending. We have to make the best out of life and enjoy everything that comes our way, and I am thankful from the bottom of my heart.”

Roly poly races introduce kids to science Butler Elementary Bug derby teaches kindergartners about probability

The Kindergarteners gathered in Fort Lupton’s Butler Elementary library May 6, cheering and predicting whether the pill bugs or the sows bug would win the race.

With the Kentucky Derby running the next day, Butler Elementary teachers Sydney Blackburn, Sarah Hude and Megan Roberts donned some traditional fancy hats for a derby of their own, featuring fleet-footed Isopods – a kind of multi-legged insects with hard shells – to help kindergarteners

incorporate the math concepts of probability.

The three teachers created a race track to race two types of Isopods – pill bugs and sowbugs, known as Roly-polys. The goal, part of the school’s life science unit, was meant to test which of the bugs could run the fastest as an experiment.

“Colorado Academic Standards for kindergarten provide the framework for the focus of their scientific observation: comparing and contrasting animals, their needs and environments,” said Cathy Swanson, Weld Re-8 Student Achievement Coach.

Each student had cards numbered from once to six to match each race. They chose a number to pick the winners or predict which bugs would win.

“Choosing a number is part of the probability of mathematics.

So as when they get older in seventh grade, they learned a princi-

ple called theoretical probability.

They’ll learn to prove it experimentally when they are seventh graders,” Swanson said.

The teachers are educating students in a “Animals Two by Two” program to grow their science skills as well as intersecting concepts such as patterns, structure, and function. The young scientists have been learning about the skeletons of these animals and differentiating the characteristics of each species “The students have been studying four types of animals and habitats also honing in on observation skills about the similarities and differences,” said Swanson.

These little scientists have been investigating to observe and compare the needs of goldfish and guppies, red worms and earthworms, the two species of isopods and two types of waterbugs: Ramshorn and pond snails.

“They have been provided with

multiple opportunities to explore, observe, discuss, draw and write about various animals. A key phrase of the National Science Foundation is their deep belief in the principle of “Hands-on Minds On’’ learning,” Swanson said.

The kindergarteners are also developing and expanding their vocabulary, she said.

“Students learning directly through observing, seeing, touching and caring for animals provides opportunities to use words like segment, gills, pouch, lungs, antenna, fins, habitat, carapace and isopod meaning equal feet,” Swanson said. “Right there in their terrariums are opportunities to observe first-hand, wonder, discover and grow their excitement for science through discovery,” she added.

They will develop as scientists and investigators, said Theresa Rosasco, Butler Elementary principal.

Memorial Day parade returns to Commerce City STAFF REPORT

The state’s biggest Memorial Day parade returns to Commerce City this year after a COVID-caused absence. It’s the 56th edition this year, and it starts at 9:30 a.m. May 30.

A city statement said the city’s parade honors those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation, along with local military veterans for their service to the country. The statement also noted that the event appeals not only to

veterans but also to families and community members from throughout Commerce City and the region.

The staging area is near East 64th Avenue and Olive Street. The line of march begins at East 64th Avenue and Newport Street and continues west to Holly Street, then turns

south to East 62nd Avenue. From there, the parade loops around the Eagle Pointe Recreation Center before ending at East 60th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard.

Before the parade begins, city staff hosts a Memorial Day ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park.

Weld gets grant to combat noxious weeds

Landowners near Pawnee National Grassland, northeast of Greeley, can get help to eliminate noxious weeds that seek to outpace and destroy native plants, according to a Weld County program.

“We’re always trying to find new ways to better control noxious weed growth throughout the county and help our residents do the same,” said Tina Booton, Weld County Weed Division Supervisor. “We’re thankful and excited to receive this grant, which will go a long way in preserving the beauty of our grassland.”

Private properties close to the grassland that spend $25 to $50 per acre to eliminate or suppress the noxious weed growth can be reimbursed for 80% of the cost. Weld County and several agency partners will be awarded a portion of the $174,800 from The Restoration and Stewardship of Outdoor Resources (Restore) grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF).

Residents living within the project boundaries surrounding the northern half of Weld County, east of Highway 85 from Weld County Road 90 north to the Wyoming/ Nebraska border and east to Logan, could be reimbursed. Before starting treatment, landowners must contact Kent Lynch Weld County Weed Landowner specialist to learn about eligibility and chemical requirements.

The grassland project is titled “Eradicating Annual Invasive to Restore Native Grassland in Weld County.”

Weld County Weed Division, with agency partners, Pawnee National Grassland, Colorado State Land Board, West Greeley Conservation District, and Colorado Department of Transportation over the next few years, will use the funds to restore at least 4,000 acres of public, private, and federal land by eliminating or suppressing several noxious weed species such as Hoary Cress, Cheatgrass, Dalmatian Toadflax, Diffuse

The next phase of the plan is to plant native grasses across 200 areas of damaged grassland. Weld County and its partner agencies also contributed to the project, with the projected cost totaling $314, 000 according to officials.

BRIEFS Fullmoonbikerides The city of Brighton’s Full Moon Bike rides return this summer with a new addition -- an advanced rider group and a recreational rider group for each ride.

The two groups start at different times.

A city statement said advanced riders are “strong and fearless bicyclists or enthused and confident bicyclists.”

Recreational riders “are confident in their safety or people who would enjoy bicycling if they felt safer doing it.”

The city of Brighton’s Eye for Art program is looking for artists for the 2022-2023 sculpture-on-loan program.

The tyear-long exhibit will be at Carmichael Park, 650 E. Southern St. Artists can display their scultpures.

Immigrants honored with citizenship during ceremony 26 new U.S. citizens hailing from dozens of countries welcomed

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, during a May 9 ceremony at Belleview Elementary School in Centennial, granted citizenship to 26 immigrants hailing from 20 countries.

Residents currently live in a slew of communities in the Denver metro area and beyond including Aurora, Centennial, Commerce City, Elizabeth, Golden, Highlands Ranch, Lakewood, Parker and Sedalia.

“It was probably the happiest moment of my life,” said Fadilayda Solakkaya, who immigrated from Turkey and now lives in Parker, and is excited to have a passport, vote in elections and help her community.

Goran Vejvoda, originally from Yugoslavia, has lived in several countries and said being a U.S. citizen “is a privilege.”

“How many places are there in the world where you can speak freely and vote freely and think freely,” Vejvoda said.

county and regional leaders who shared their experiences of being an immigrant.

“Welcome to the land of hope, the land of opportunity,” said Arapahoe County Assessor PK Kaiser, who was born in India and gained U.S. citizenship in 2009. “America believes in immigrants.”

Being a citizen comes with liberties and responsibilities, said Kaiser, one of the most important being voting.

“Make sure you vote in every single election and make sure your voice is

getting heard,” Kaiser said.

District Court judge Don J. Toussaint, whose parents immigrated from Haiti to New York and then to New Jersey, where Toussaint was born, spoke of his late father’s own immigrant journey and how it reverberates with him today.

Toussaint said after his father’s death in 2020, he found a “treasure trove” of items from his life, among them his citizenship certificate from 1978.

“From the letters I read, from the

letters that he wrote to his brother and sister in Port-au-Prince (Haiti), how much he adored this country and how he wanted to give back to this country,” Toussaint said, adding that his father was active in helping other Haitian immigrants and victims of the AIDs pandemic that began in the 1980s.

Toussaint’s father fled a brutal dictatorship in Haiti, Toussaint said, and while he believes his father “didn’t want to leave” he knew he had no choice.

“Now, this country that I love a lot, is not a perfect country obviously,” Toussaint said. “But the ideals and the promise that this country holds makes this the perfect promise and perfect dream for millions of people.”

Attendees also heard from the school’s 4th-grade choir, who performed as a proud and triumphant chorus with words about the beauty of the U.S.’s immigrant heritage.

Before taking the Oath of Allegiance and being presented with their certificates, soon-to-be citizens heard a pre-recorded video message from President Joe Biden who celebrated the depth and diversity of the U.S.’s immigrant community.

“America’s a big country and it’s beautiful in the fact that it is so diverse,” Vejvoda said. “Like President Biden said, it’s an immigrant country in a very, very profound way.

Those people got together to make things better.”
