Fort Lupton mulls summer watering restrictions

The city of Fort Lupton is considering watering restrictions this summer. Public Works Director Roy Vestal made the announcement during a City Council
planted lawns — either new sod or seed — can receive a three-week waiver per address per calendar year. Waivers would be valid from June 1 to Aug. 31 and would be available at City Hall. Waiver approvals would have to be displayed in a window that faces the street. Commercial car washes would also be exempt. Vestal also discouraged car-washing, though the proposal allows for car-washing at residences as

James (Jim) was born in Bismarck, North Dakota on September 19, 1958 to Henry and Rosella (Heck) Muhlhauser. He would spend the first nine years in Bismarck, until moving to Mandan, where he would “tear up the town” as young boys do. He would remain there until his graduation in 1976 from Mandan Senior High.

It was a cherished love full of all the things they enjoyed which including a hot air balloon ride, snow mobilling, water skiing, white water rafting, concerts/ festivals, sporting events and travel. He especially enjoyed trips to Mexico and time spent swimming in the cenote (underground water pools).
Extremely patriotic, Jim chose to serve his country and joined the Navy working on nuclear submarines. He would travel all over the world while stationed in West Virginia, Hawaii and Washington as a Missile and Missile Checkout Technician. During his time in the Navy, Jim would serve on the USS George Washington, USS Nevada and USS Ohio. Shore duties had him working as an instructor and supporting a high-ranking officer. After nearly twenty years in the Navy, achieving the rank of Senior Chief, he decided to hang up his sea legs and honorably retire. A new career awaited him.
As many know, Jim was a strong and determined man. He brought that strength to his battle with brain cancer. Upon finding out he had Glioblastoma he immediately choose to do whatever it took to beat it down. His strength (determination) would continue for almost twenty-three months (beating the prognosis of two weeks to two months if he did nothing) until his battle would finally end. He was surrounded by family as he passed on, taking his final earthly journey knowing his mother, father and sister were already there waiting for him.
The next chapter for Jim would find him spending just shy of twenty-five years with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF). His career with BNSF began in Wyoming but would eventually bring him to Colorado where he worked in the Signal department, first as a signal maintainer then retiring as a signal inspector. During his tenure with the BNSF James would take on additional service as the Local President and Local Chairman for the BNSF Union. He was very proud of defending his fellow union brethren and extremely good at “wearing out” management. During these years Jim would enjoy sports, travel, family and friends. He enjoyed college basketball (Duke) and professional football, first the Redskins then the Broncos. He enjoyed telling stories and laughing while regaling folks with tales of his childhood, his time in military and with the railroad. Every year he would travel to North Dakota over the 4th of July to enjoy time with family, especially with his mother whom he was very close. Jim was truly a family man. He loved his children tremendously, spending as much time as possibility with them going to school activities, Waterworld, Elitches, Art in the Park and the 4th of July parades. While with his children, he especially valued the laughter generated during the various water actives and the morning games of Uno. Having lived together for many years, Jim and Wade, his close friend and brother, would spend many hours enjoying life and solving the world’s problems. Later in life he would find the love of his life, Dawn. They had so much in common and

Aurora Silva Trujillo, 91, of Brighton, CO passed away April 20, 2022. She was born October 3, 1930 to Francisco Silva and Eucelia Esquibel Silva in Penasco Blanco, NM. Aurora attended school in Rociada, NM and graduated high school in Las Vegas, NM. She married Pete R. Trujillo on October 17, 1951 and moved to Brighton, CO to make their home. They raised six children and were Brighton residents for 63 years. Aurora is preceded in death by her husband Pete, daughter Sally Solano, sister Lucinda (Mariano) Romero, brother Guadalupe (Connie) Silva, loving nieces, nephews and godchildren Josie Marez, Roseann Flores, Diana Chavez, Ted Romero, Ruben Silva, STUDENKA

Aurora is survived by her children: Gloria Dominguez (Westminster, CO), MaryJo C’deBaca (Rio Rancho, NM), Gerald Trujillo (Brighton, CO), James Trujillo (Thornton, CO), George (Terry) Trujillo (Brighton, CO), 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Aurora was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and member of the Holy Family Society. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, scrapbooking, working with crafts, cooking (Aurora was a fantastic cook!), baking and having her family together for meals. She and her husband Pete also loved traveling the Southwest camping and fishing.

Barbara was born in Memphis, Tennessee and was raised in Nebraska, and North Dakota.
Mom obituary: Barbara K. Engelter Studenka 1938-2022 – Lakewood Colorado Since 2000, Barbara was an artist in fiber and watercolor painting creating works of art to be displayed. From 1961-2000 she was an English teacher in Jefferson County Colorado and several other counties in the state.
She is survived by her daughter, Breanna Erin, her granddaughter Josephine Barbara Dorsch, and her grandson Bridger Edward Dorsch. Barbara did not want a service. She will be cremated. Her family will have a celebration of life in June in her favorite place in the world, her backyard!

If all goes well, groundbreaking for Fort Lupton’s new splash pad could come as soon as the spring of 2023, and full use of the pad could come in time for the summer of 2023. The home for the splash pad is on the south side of the recreation center on South Harrison Avenue. Aquatic supervisor Doug Cook said there were three phases to construction. One includes an 8-foot wide concrete walk, shade trees and a plaza with picnic tables. The second phase includes a landscape bed, more shade trees, and a 6-foot wide concrete walk. The third phase includes playgrounds for primary school youngsters and those in middle school and five more shade trees. A city survey in 2017 started the initial interest in the splash pad. COVID brought a halt to talk of the pad until late last year when City Council approved $400,000 for the capital improvement project for

2022. “We went in for some grants from GOCO (Great Outdoors Colorado) in 2017. They weren’t awarded,” Cook said. “Now, we’ve moved in a different direction. We’re looking at more funding from GOCO. We’re also looking for donations to offset the cost of some of the amenities, like picnic benches.”
Raising money for work The city is making a push for donations through the Fourth of July, though Cook said contributions are welcome anytime. Family and individual sponsorships are available. The prices range from $250 to $500. The same opportunity exists for businesses. Donations range from $1,500 to
$5,000. Included in the sponsorships are recognition on a flagstone sponsorship wall, recognition on the splash park’s web page and an announcement in the city’s 2022 summer recreation guide. For those who can’t reach the sponsorship threshold, a $25 donation to the Every Drop Counts program. The minimum donation for city recognition on the splash park web page and the Every Drop Counts campaign in the recreation center lobby is $25. A $100 donation gets a grand opening T-shirt, too. The pad would be a free amenity. It’s a seasonal activity, likely to be open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The city will use a recirculation system for the water “similar to pool maintenance,” Cook explained “We’re looking at this as a destination spot for Fort Lupton residents and residents in areas like Brighton and Platteville. There’s no charge. It’s open to the public,” Cook said. “It’ll be in a multi-use area. We have soccer fields, the pavilions and a skate park.”

Reunion elementary expected this fall, Thornton magnet school due 2023 Growth in the 27J School District means more schools – two, as a matter of fact. One is in the Willow Bend section of Thornton, near East 146th Avenue and Holly Street. 27J spokesperson Janelle Asmus said originally, the school was going to be a charter school. “But the charter that had been working on that was not able to make it happen,” she said. “So, the district is building a new school in that community, and it will be a pre-K-8 school and it is slated to open in the fall of 2023.” The new principal is Sheri Collier, the interim principal at Brantner Elemen-

Full moon bike rides The city of Brighton’s Full Moon Bike rides return this summer with a new addition -- an advanced rider group and a recreational rider group for each ride. A handful of Weld RE-8 School District parents are mad about bullying and they’re not going to take it. During an April 28 Re-8 school board meeting, parents mentioned no specific claims other than to say related emails had been exchanged between some parents and the board members. The email exchanges were not readily available, pending review by the district attorney. Some of the emails contain names of employees. One parent told the board she and her husband are considering transferring their daughter,

even at the expense of state high-school athletic rules that will force her to miss one season of competition. Angelina Garza-Alarcon was quite direct. Her son, D’mitri, is a two-time state wrestling champion. “This s--t needs to stop,” she told the board. “I hold my kids accountable for what they do. But I tell them if somebody comes for them, they should hit back. I’m tired of her (her daughter) being bullied. This needs to stop. I’m not going to let my kid be pummeled. She knows how to fight.” “I hope this doesn’t happen next year,” said parent Amanda Galicia. “If it keeps continuing, I hope everyone is ready
for the consequences that are going to happen.” The school board did not respond to any of the comments. Before the parents spoke, board President Susan Browne welcomed the comments but cautioned the speakers not to mention anyone by name and to be respectful. No one from the district responded to the emails that prompted the April 28 speeches. At the end of the meeting, Superintendent Alan Kaylor said he could acknowledge receipt. Board member Michelle Bettger didn’t think that was enough. “I would like to see us come up with some automatic thing we can agree on,” she said. “I think it’s rude not to respond.”
“Anyone can do it,” Samide said. “In Kentucky, they are training 6-year-olds to do it in case their parents overdose.” School resource officers in the district carry Narcan. But Samide said there are two such officers for six district buildings.
“They can’t be in six places at once,” she said. “Someone there can administer it until the SROs or the EMS shows up. Somebody can administer it, and somebody can call 911.” Kaylor said he would bring a proposed policy to the board for its May 26 meeting.

It’s the most automated block plant in North America, equipped with the latest technology, he said. “Basalite building products is very excited to be part of the Fort Lupton / Weld County Community,”’ Joe Kerrigan, Basalite’s general manager, said. “Our interactions with the City of Fort Lupton and members of the community have exceeded our expectations. We are excited to grow within the community and for what the future holds for our continued partnerships.” California-based Basalite is a wholesaler that sells to hardware stores across the western U.S. and Canada, including Home Depot. The company purchased 60 acres of land north of Fort Lupton and began constructing the plant in 2019. They completed in February 2021. But the company’s in-house testing lab, design molding, repair and welding shop are all housed in the Fort Lupton operation. They make the blocks used in building, landscaping and architecture. Those can include pavers for walks and patios, blocks for retaining walls or concrete masonry for buildings. The testing lab tests compression crushing strength tests on concrete blocks by placing them in a testing machine that measures the force needed to crush them. And also do testing on aggregate density, moisture, and color variations. “These tests are done to see if we are meeting our specks required standards that we adhere to on strength, durability and aesthetics and we also test colors too,” said Brad Vetting, quality control manufacture engineer. The welding and repair shops are responsible for maintaining and repairing the block molds, Walton said. “The mold shop designs the mold for the different sizes of concrete blocks and bricks. They also weld and repair the molds because they wear down,” said

Building blocks The plant has giant hoppers that store the sand and gravel inside and hoppers outside, holding many different colors of sand. “Our work is done inside, so we do not deal with the weather, so we continue to work all year round. The outside of the plant is used for storage. We also have dust control emissions, so sand piles are not in the plant,” said Walton. They have two enormous machines from France, one called a Bisser, and the other called a Quadra. The machines shake and compress the material to make blocks before they are kiln-dried and cured. It’s deafeningly noisy, so each machine is secured in soundproof rooms. Next is the two-story Kiln room that cures the blocks with a robot moving ceiling-high stacks of blocks through once they are cured via a conveyor belt. As the blocks are on a conveyor belt, employees inspect them for perfection. If a block comes out with

some imperfections, it is put into a large bin and re-used for by-products; nothing gets wasted. They produce wet casts too. The finished blocks move along to robots with arms in each area that moves heavy stacks of concrete blocks, cutting, flipping, and handing over blocks to the next robot and placing them on conveyors belts. One last robot wraps them and packages the final products for shipping.
An employee oversees all the robots in the control room using interlocking touch screen computers to program the robots, as well as to monitor all the systems and do maintenance. “We are expanding to a sevenday operation and looking to hire folks,” Walton said.
