From failing to glorious, windows get new life Fort Lupton’s First Methodist Church to rededicate historic stained glass
through 2001, said restoring the stained glass was been a remarkable, long-term project. “The latest restoration was completed because of the diligence of our trustees and was finished this year,” Hubert said. “After many months of windows being removed and restored, one by one, the windows are all returned and beautifully restored.” Hubert relied on written histories from the 1836 First Methodist Episcopal Church history by C.G. Phillip in 1912; “The Echoes from Peak to Plain” by Reverend Beardsley; and the “Church Program” by Phyllis Ceretto. Edessa Anderson wrote the 75-anniversary history book from 1912 to 1933 and Harvey Sells, Iva Thiessen, and Loren Willey wrote the history from 1933 to 1982. The church has gone by many different names throughout its history. It began as the Methodist Episcopal Church through 1939 before becoming the South Protestant Church, the Methodist Episcopal Church South and then the First United Methodist Church.

The soul of a church is usually much more than its walls. In Fort Lupton’s First Methodist Church’s case, part of it can be found in the stained glass windows that decorate those walls. “I learned a lot and learned more than I ever thought about stained glass, which is an interesting and unique art,” said Teri Kopfmann, First Methodist Church chairwoman of the trustees. The church is completing a full restoration of the stained glass windows that began five years ago. An open house to view the renovated historic stained glass is from 4-6 p.m. April 21 at 306 Park Ave. The rededication ceremony and church worship service will be at 9 a.m. April 24. The original stained glass windows have been maintained in sections for years, beginning with the most damaged windows. The staff kept the original bits of glass and broken pieces to be edge-glued back in so as not to replace them when restoring the stained glass. Denver Art Glass repaired the stained glass, and Heritage Window Restoration restored the wood that held the framing together. “There were only a few pieces that were not fixable, but the rest of the stained glass was renovated. The original glass could not be sourced out because it was created in 1916,” Kopfmann said. “The funding support for the windows was from the congregation, memorials, funeral support, endowment gifts and community donations.” Fort Lupton’s Sue Davis Hubert, who updated the history of the First Methodist Church from 1836

Seeing a need According to Hubert, Reverend R.R. Adams, chairman of the Colorado Sunday School Association, served as pastor from September 1912 to 1915. He was also the first pastor at the church to conduct the Sunday school. The community of Fort Lupton, seeing the need for extra worship services and Sunday school, increased membership to fund and build a new church. They chose a centrally located lot at the corner of Third and Park avenues to build the new church. They paid $1,000 for the lot and another $10,000 to build the church. Rev. George G. Saywell replaced Adams as head of the congregation from 1915 to 1919. He continued the construction and completed it by 1916. It was built in a mission-

When he was 8 years old, the family moved to Roggen and he attended Prospect Valley High School. The family then moved to Commerce City.

Brighton settles water rights suit City agrees to deal bringing 50 shares of new water rights to municipal supply BY SCOTT TAYLOR STAYLOR@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
With a suit about buying shares of water settled, some $2.8 million worth of water rights should flow Brighton’s way sometime this summer. City councilors voted to accept a settlement agreement with the Castle Pines North Metropolitan District at a special meeting on April 12. City Attorney Alica Calderon said the agreement means that the city will own
about 50 shares of water from the Fulton Ditch group. “This is water for the city to use in the future,” Calderon said. “It depends on how quickly the paperwork and the sale gets settled if it will have an impact on our water supplies this summer, but it certainly will have an impact in the future and for years to come.” Brighton filed a suit against the Castle Pines North Metro District in November that challenged the metro district’s sale of water rights to Aurora. Brighton challenged the sealed bid process the metro district used, highlighting the “improper” way Aurora offered an additional $1 million if it won the ability to buy four water right options that
were being sold. Brighton claims that its bid for the water rights to the Fulton Ditch Share Group and to the Lupton Bottom Share Group were the highest bids submitted. Calderon said that Brighton bid on Fulton Shares and bid $5,834,500 for 105 shares. Based on the April 12 resolution, Brighton will be able to buy 50 shares. That is approximately $55,566.67 per share and about $2,778,335 in total. “A water share is a right to draw a certain amount of water, but what it gets translated when it gets converted into municipal use is much more complicated,” Calderon said. “There is no easy way to quantify that, but in the water court process it can be
quantified down to individual droplets.” It comes as the city is trying to bridge the municipal supply for the next two years, when a new Brighton water plant is due to come online. Water customers could face summer restrictions or higher rates until it’s ready, for the summers of 2022 and 2023. The city has already started converting some athletic fields from turf to artificial turf and is aggressively looking to build a non-potable system so the city can water its fields and parks with untreated water and is working on a voluntary campaign to get Brighton residents to reduce their water consumption, especially during hot summer days.
Kidnapping, suspect’s chase ends in Brighton STAFF REPORT
It started in Aurora as a stolen car with a 2-year-old on board. It ended with the arrest of a 28-yearold man in Brighton. Rodriguez Parker faces second-degree kidnapping, aggravated motor vehicle theft and eluding. Formal charges have not been filed.
Aurora police said the incident began around midnight near South Abilene Street and East Mississippi Avenue when someone stole an SUV from a hotel. Authorities later learned a 2-yearold boy was asleep inside the car. In a tweet shared by Brighton police, authorities said the child’s mother took a drive to calm the
baby down and to help him fall asleep. She stopped at the motel to use the restroom. Parker got into the car and drove away. Shortly after 12:30 a.m., police saw the SUV near East Colfax Avenue and Sable Boulevard. An attempt to stop the vehicle turned into a pursuit. The chase lasted for about 40 minutes
before ending near Interstate 76 and East 144th Avenue in Brighton. Aurora police said Brighton officers used StopSticks to bring an end to the case. Platte Valley Ambulance took the child to an area hospital, then drove the child back to Aurora to reunite with his mother.

The city of Fort Lupton is eyeing a projected population growth rate of 3 percent a year. City staff said it received 195 housing permits in 2021. Public Works Director Roy Vestal wants to find a way to reserve 2 million gallons of wastewater in anticipation of that growth rate. He outlined his plan to Fort Lupton City Council during an April 12 town hall. Large, commercial entities aren’t on the city’s radar just yet. But Vestal cautioned a business such as a data processor could use rather large amounts of water because of the need for cooling towers. “I’ve seen one or two operations, like a cannery, come into towns and then shying away because of the cost of water,” Vestal said. “Frankly, with the economy, I don’t know how they can afford to do something like that.” “Do you see a large commercial growth?” asked Mayor Zo Stieber.
“I found nothing that’s feasible,” he said. At its peak last year, the city treated 1.6 million gallons of wastewater per day, a figure Vestal called “still within our operating parameter.” Vestal said the future flow capacity could be close to 6 million gallons a day, about twice the existing plant capacity. “We need to plan forward, and we don’t want to do this for another 20 years,” Vestal told the council. “We want to make the next piece a retrofit. We won’t reach 6 million gallons for at least 40 more years.” “I’d like to look at this every five years,” Stieber said. “There are a lot of things we let slide.” New cars, new radios Fort Lupton Police John Fryar said he was “delirious” with the work of Enterprise Car Rental to fix his police vehicles. However, when he changes out four squad cars by the end of the year, he needs to install four new police radios. Fryar told councilors he wasn’t sure if that was part of a service agreement with BearCom, which
provides wireless voice and data communications equipment. The potential cost is $22,500. “I want to buy the four radios and then work something out with BearCom later,” Fryar said. “I want to make sure we get the radios.”
Other business Vestal announced that the city’s clean-up day would take place Saturday, April 30. “The (COVID) figures didn’t change,” he told the council. “They are hanging down there .. low. Clean-Up Day is a chance for residents to dispose of household and yard items for free. Bring a copy of a utility bill or driver’s license to prove residency. Eligible items include electronics, computers, CRT televisions and monitors. Ineligible items include industrial and commercial waste, concrete debris, regular curbside trash and items for shredding. BRIEFS Drug task force makes large haul The North Metro Drug Task Force seized a large amount of fentanyl after a combined operation with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and the Colorado State Patrol. A press statement said the effort resulted in the seizure of almost 60,000 pounds of counterfeit fentanyl M-30 pills, five pounds of methamphetamine and several pounds of cocaine and heroin. The first chance is the weekend of Friday, April 29. The second is the weekend of Friday, Sept. 23. Both will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Brighton Wastewater Treatment Facility, 325 N. Kuner Road. Those with special needs can call the city for pick-up service April 27 and 28 and again Sept. 21 and 22. Acceptable items include furniture, cabinets, appliances (not refrigerators/freezers), bicycles, cut-up carpet, doors, stereos, lawn/ yard equipment, mattresses/box springs and bundled branches less than 5 feet in length.
