Weld County commissioner sends formal letter to General Assembly BYBELENWARD BWARD@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Weld County Commissioners have joined 37 other counties to oppose any legislation mandating collective bargaining for public employees, according to a press release by Weld County commissioners. “Any such proposed legislation will cause irreparable harm to Colorado taxpayers,” said Weld County commission chairman Scott James in the release. Weld County’s press statement said James worked closely with commissioners across the state on the drafting of the opposition letter. “Such a shift in policy is short-sighted and unwarranted,” he wrote. “It is a solution no one asked for to a problem that doesn’t exist.” According to officials, various agencies and elected officials signed a formal letter to state legislators urging members of the General Assembly to oppose the mandate. The letter was addressed to Speaker Alec Garnett, Senate President Stephen Fenberg, majority leaders Daneya Esgar and Dominick Moreno and minority leaders Hugh McKean and Chris Holbert. Collective bargaining involves union members negotiating contracts to determine terms of employment with the employer. Negotiation topics can include wages, benefits, hours, leave, job health, safety policies and worklife balance. Commissioners join the Colorado Association of School Boards, the Colorado Association of School Executives, the Colorado Municipal League, the Special District Association and other entities in opposition of the legislative mandate, according to the press release. According to the Weld County commissioners’ statement, the letter states they do not oppose collective bargaining as a policy but agree it is an individual employee/employer decision. “We stress that unfunded mandates and unwelcome insertion into local governments, schools and higher education institutions and their budgetary matters by the state is harmful to Colorado on many levels,” the letter said.
