Dr. Stephen Cardos after more than 46 years in since July 1975 serving generations of families children has retired and was honored by Brighton’s City Council with January 18th as Dr. Stephen Cardos day.

“I feel thankful that my life’s work was meaningful and was appreciated,” said Dr. Cardos.

Cardos was born in Brooklyn, New York and graduated from New York University Medical School and did his residency at Bellevue Hospital, New York.

After leaving New York City in 1973 he spent two years in Omaha, Nebraska hospital, and then joined Air Force.

“I was the chief of Pediatrics in the Air Force, at a very busy clinic,” said Dr. Cardos.

Dr. Cardos wanted to be a doctor since was very young and also had asthma so he had lots of exposure being around doctors. It was one

role model that inspired him and he knew going forward it was what he wanted to do.

“It’s was tough especially when my friends were having parties- I was studying,” said Dr. Cardos.

When training at Bellevue hospital Dr. Cardos was seeing primarily homeless people who were living on the streets or where ever.

“It was very frustrating to have them as patients because you could get them all cleaned up to get rid of their body lice or all their diseasesthen two weeks later- they were back in the hospital with the same thing all over again,” Cardos said.

It was so frustrating for Dr. Cardos and it gave a distorted view of what real medicine was like and also for the rest of the country. It was when he decided he wanted to go into pediatrics.

“Kids are innocent and had no say over their social situation. It’s has been very enjoyable to work with children.

It’s Brighton’s Turf Now Dirt infields being coverted to turf

New turf for the city of Brighton sports complexes that was voted by Brighton City Council on December 21, 2021, according to a press release.

Its’ conversion project would cost $4,386,500 and is scheduled to start construction as early as January 17th by Rocky Mountain Turf Solutions, according to officials. Fields

one and two at the Brighton Sports Complex will be the first two fields for demolition and the other two fields will remain open for programming. Once the two are completed then demolition will start at the Pawlowski Fields for the turf conversation. The projected timeline for completion of both complexes is about 48-weeks.

According to officials, the conversion to turf would save over 10 million gallons of water per year in all the complexes and the teams can practice all year long.

Richard was born in Monte Vista, Colorado to John and Eliria Martinez on May 2, 1935.

He married Naomi Chacon on September 29, 1956. They were married 25 years and had five children. After the passing of Naomi, he married Viola Cruz and they were married 39 blessed years.

Council reviews splash pad, considers water topics

Fort Lupton City Council got one of its first looks at a potential splash pad outside the city’s recreation center on South Harrison Avenue.

The information came during a Jan. 25 town hall meeting, so there was no decision.

The early cost, according to Public Works Director Roy Vestal, is about $3,600. It includes an aerial view of the area, a preliminary layout of the pad and cost estimates.

“The next step is to put it out to bid for construction,” Vestal said.

“This came in at a reasonable cost.

It came in at 8 percent to 10 percent of the anticipated cost, which is standard for design work.

The next step is to get a contractor on board to build the thing. We need a designer to put it together.”

Wastewater hauling Vestal was a busy presenter Jan. 25. He recommended that council sign a wastewater hauling deal with Burns and McDonnell – the city has a contract with that engineering firm to do the necessary repairs on the plant – to take care of hauling wastewater material. The preferred route of travel is U.S. Highway 85, though officials said the transport

should not interfere with anyone’s right of way.

Early cost estimates from Burns and McDonnell were about $6,500 higher than a proposal from CH2M Hill. Its work would be completed in 400 days, according to Vestal, while Burns and McDonnell could get the necessary approval in June and finish the work within 100 days.

“They are going to be more motivated,” Vestal told council.

“I’m inclined to go with burns and McDonnell. They know what needs to be done.”

“Would they give a better price if you told them you had another offer? Would they come down?” asked Mayor Zo Stieber.

‘Tis that time of year for city governments to decide which office software package they’d like to buy for the coming year.

During a Fort Lupton City Council town hall Jan. 25, city staff presented a proposal to reup with Microsoft Office for a cost of $40,000.

Councilwoman Valerie Blackston had another idea .. Google Suite.

“It’s Google Sheets. It’s Google every-

thing,” she said. “It’s darn near 1-to-1 with Microsoft at this point.”

“I can ask for a price and see if they are charging a lot,” City Administrator Chris Cross said. “If it’s 1-to-1 with Microsoft? Cheaper makes sense.”

“Definitely. Check on their pricing,” Mayor Zo Stieber said.

Council didn’t make a decision because of the meeting’s format.

More money matters Council also took up a proposal for a new mower for the city’s parks and recreation department Jan. 25.

Parks Supervisor Brian Oswalt wants to buy a 40-inch mower to replace “an older model that will need work done to it continuously.” His tar-

get price is a bit less than $21,000, and the provider is G&G Equipment from Frederick.

Stieber wanted some information about a warranty before council’s vote.

Oswalt thought the length of the warranty might be five years.

“This will work around City Hall, the parks and rights of way,” Oswalt told council. “It will allow us to dump the clippings into our dump truck.”

Stieber asked about the potential of a trade-in.

“They don’t typically do that,” Oswalt said. “Maybe we can sell it later and get $3,000 to $5,000 for it. It doesn’t have any use to us. We can use it as a back-up. I have a guy who can work on it.”

Watch for changes in RMDs If you’re a certain age, you’ll need to withdraw money from some of your retirement accounts each year. But in 2022, the amount you must take out may be changing more than in other years – and that could affect your retirement income strategy.

Now, the life expectancy tables used by the IRS are being updated to reflect longer lifespans – a move that may result in lower annual RMDs than you’d have to take otherwise.

This change could help you. For one thing, RMDs are generally taxable at your personal income tax rate, so the lower your RMDs, the lower your tax bill might be.

Also, since lower RMDs mean that less money will be taken from your IRA and 401(k), these accounts may not be depleted as quickly.

Furthermore, the lower RMDs may give you more flexibility in planning and managing your retirement income.

Changes to the RMD rules don’t happen too often. So, consider how the new, lower RMDs may work to your advantage.

Then COVID hit it was he stopped seeing patients.

“The practice had a big decrease in the number of patients.

You would think the opposite, everybody’s sick and would come in, but nobody came in because they were afraid,” he said. “So the practice went down and I stopped seeing patients and managed the practice for the next two years.”

In addition, Dr. Cardos has been involved with a lot of community service over the years. He was one of the founders of the Almost Home shelter. “In 1980 the Catholics Church was sheltering about 30 people in the basement every night.

It was a community joint effort, the Catholic Church provided the space, the Methodist Church provided blankets, and the Pres-

byterian Church provided food,” Dr. Cardos said.

With a change of priests at the Catholic Church, the new priests did not want to use the basement as a shelter anymore.

“So the committee that was helping with this we decided we need to build a shelter and that eventually became “Almost Home,” said Dr. Cardos.

“It’s doing very well. It was a small little operation with one person, one family and now we have a bigger house for six families.”

The Future Dr. Cardos has a wife, four kids, and 10 grandchildren. Has love for music and plays classical guitar. His real passion is ballroom dancing and also does some teach-

The only downside to having turf is the kids playing sports 14-yearsold and over use the metal cleats, so they are not allowed to use them on turf fields.

“They will need to have molded rubber cleats when they play in Brighton and the second pair of cleats when they play at dirt infields- if they want to wear metal cleats,” Moul said. Depending on how you look at it that isn’t a bad thing.”

Moul, says another advantage, on turf the ball does not slow down like it does rolling on the dirt or grass, so the speed of the game will be faster.

“The kids playing in Brighton

will need to learn to get to the ball faster when it is hit. This will make them better players when they go play on slower grass fields,” said Moul.

With the announcement of the new turf field, several existing tournament organization teams have contacted the City of Brighton to add several new tournaments in Brighton.

“Who knows, maybe we can even talk CHSSA into hosting the Colorado State Baseball or Softball tournaments in Brighton someday,” said Moul. “With these eight fields being turfed Brighton will have some of the nicest facilities in the state of Colorado for Baseball & Softball.”

Once the new fields are completed, the Brighton Recreation Center

will celebrate with the launch of the summer softball league on May 3.

“Hopefully the current City Council and city staff continue to make improvements like this to the sports facilities in our town.

We are hoping they will decide to add turf to the football and soccer Fields at the Water Tower Sports Complex in 2023,” Moul added.

April 13 is the deadline for teams to register for its extended 12 week season for $500 per team. The men’s leagues play on Tuesdays and Wednesday nights and coed teams play on Thursday nights.

Bridge St. Youth summer job launch The city of Brighton’s youth services department will be hosting its annual Growing Grads Summer Job Launch from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, at City Hall, 500 S. Fourth Ave. It’s a chance for youngsters interested in interning or working for the city over the summer to build resumes, get tips and tracks for obtaining summer jobs and find out more about what the city has to offer during the summer.

Trash Bash dates for 2022 in place The city of Brighton announced its dates for Trash Bash in 2022. It’s a chance for residents to get rid of large items.

The first chance is the weekend of Friday, April 29. The second is the weekend of Friday, Sept. 23. Both will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Brighton Wastewater Treatment Facility, 325 N. Kuner Road.

Those with special needs can call the city for pick-up service April 27 and 28 and again Sept. 21 and 22.

Elementary school poster contest The city of Brighton is part of the annual Arbor Day Fifth Grade Poster contest, open to public, privatre and home-schooled students.

This year’s theme is “Celebrating Trees In Our Community” and is an opportunity for students to show their creativity to raise awareness of trees and their important role they play in the environment and our quality of life, according to a city statement.

The winner of each Brighton school will move onto the state contest and their posters will be put on display at the State Capitol.

Eagle View Adult Center is inviting the public to join in on a week-long celebration of doing kind acts for others for Random Acts of Kindness Week from February 7 - 11. Organizers have created a list of suggestions for residents, ranging from remind people they are though of to making donations.

Suggestions include: • Making or buying valentines to give to local nursing home residents and writing an encouraging note, signed with your name or “From a Friend.”

• Donating new school supplies (i.e. notebook paper, three-ring binders, etc.) for local school children in need.

ONGOING Legal self-help clinic

The Access to Justice Committee hosts a free, legal self-help clinic from 2 to 3:30 p.m. the first Tuesday of every month. The program is for customers who don’t have legal representation and need help navigating through legal issues.

Sidewalk, curb and gutter program The city of Brighton’s 50.50 Sidewalk, Curb and Gutter program is under way. The program helps ease the financial costs of maintenance and replacements, according to a statement. Property owners are responsible for that maintenance work. The program halves the replacement costs between the city and the property owner.
