Colorado’s oil and gas industry was well represented Jan. 6 as five Republicans seeking their party’s nomination for Colorado governor met in Fort Lupton. “(Gov. Jared) Polis killed the oil and gas industry. It’s one of the biggest industries in the state of Colorado,” candidate Greg Lopez said at the forum hosted by the Republican Women of Weld County. “Not only does it create over 80,000 jobs, both upstream and downstream, it pays well for families. You should remember that in his first legislative session after we voted to tell him to leave oil and gas alone, he decided to go ahead and pass legislation to put in setbacks.”

Nine Republican Colorado gubernatorial candidates were invited to the candidate forum at the Fort Lupton Recreation Center, but only five candidates attended. They were Greg Lopez, the former mayor of Parker; Morrison’s Jason Lopez; Elbert County Realtor Danielle Neuschwanger; Jeffrey Fry of Hayden and Frisco’s Jon GrayGinsberg.

Mayor, city council sworn in with an eye towards improving Brighton

Mayor Greg Mills kicked off the Brighton City Council’s 2022-23 term Jan. 4, saying he expected great things to happen but urging residents to get involved.

“Support your local elected officials, whether you voted for them or not,” Mills said during his inaugural address in the city’s Armory Performing Arts Center. “Just care.

Serve on a board, serve on a commission and do something to help the community you live in. Don’t just make Brighton a place you sleep when you go to work someplace else — care.”

Mills and returning councilors Matt Johnston and Ann Tadeo were joined by incoming councilors Peter Padilla and Jan Pawlowski as they took their oaths of office and

They joined sitting councilors Adam Cushing, Mary Ellen Pollack and Tim Watts.

City council veteran and former Police Chief Clint Blackhurst was also sworn, in despite not seeking re-election. Councilors selected Blackhurst to replace Councilor Kris Jordinelli after he submitted his resignation Dec. 3.

Councilors also selected Cushing to act as mayor pro tem for the next two years.

Come together Mills had a tougher-than-expected path to retain his seat, facing challengers Laurie Lozano Maier and Wayne Scott in November’s election. He and Lozano Maier moved on to a runoff after the two claimed the most votes. Mills had 3,599 in the November election, compared to Lozano Maier’s 2,682 and Scott’s 1,337.

Mill was able to claim the win in the Dec. 7 runoff, collecting 2,751 votes — 54 percent of the total votes cast — compared to Lozano Maier’s 2,340 votes.

At the Jan. 4 inauguration, Mills acknowledged his opponents, saying he talked to them after the elections.

“They were great challengers, and we challenged each other this past fall,” Mills said. “But now is the time to come back together.”

He urged residents to do the same.

“The next four years, we have to get back to basics,” Mills said. “We have to address our needs. We have water needs, infrastructure needs, like our transportation needs. And you are going to see a lot of transportation decisions made this year, and water decisions too. All of us are going to be involved with them.

Some might be hard decisions, but it’s time to build a better Brighton together.”

In his address, Mills acknowledged how nervous he was at first, but said he thinks the city council did great things. He said he expects more.

“I’m looking forward to the next four years,” Mills said.

Loree Ethene (Harman) Unrein February 20, 1943 - December 20, 2021

Loree Unrein was born on February 20, 1943 in Sterling, Colorado to Lola (Bacon) and John Harman. Loree was the oldest of four children and grew up in northeastern Colorado, graduating from Padroni High School in 1961. Loree met the love of her life, Ernie, while he was attending Northeastern Junior College in Sterling. Loree and Ernie married on September 11, 1961. They lived in Northglenn and Aurora early in their marriage before moving to Fort Lupton in 1968. Loree remained in the family home following Ernie’s death, but she recently moved to Eaton in 2020. She loved her new house and enjoyed selecting and decorating it to make it her new home.

Loree worked a variety of jobs while remaining at home to care for her children.

She was known for her talent as a seamstress and did custom knitting for a variety of boutiques and ski resorts. She was active in her church choir and Mary Circle. Loree began working outside of the home only after her youngest child entered high school. She enjoyed her work as a rural mail carrier and ultimately retired from the United States Postal Service. Following retirement, Loree and Ernie enjoyed traveling across the country in their truck and fifth wheel camper. During their travels, they enjoyed catching up with family and friends, shopping at antique shops and collecting crackle glass. Unfortunately, their travel plans were cut short when Ernie fell ill. Loree cared for Ernie until his death in CASTANEDA

May 2019.

Survivors include her children, Terry Unrein (Karen), Tanya Unrein (Terry Schwartz) and Lara Disney (Howard); seven grandchildren, Justin Unrein (Dani), Terrance Unrein (Laura), Andrea Goering (Adam), Emily Marrs, Colton Marrs, James Disney (Savannah), and Megan Disney (Kaiden); two greatgrandchildren, Aiden and Claire Unrein, sibling Connie Peterman (Mark) and ten siblings in-law.

Loree was preceded in death by her husband, Ernie, parents John and Lola Harman, siblings Jack Harman and Nancy Harman, and11 siblings in-law.

Those who knew Loree well called her mom, grandma, great-grandma, sister, Mrs. Unrein and a dear, devoted friend. Loree was known to be the maternal figure for family and friends alike and was always willing to listen to others without judgement. Loree was classy all the way to her end of days. She loved her family and friends fiercely and with all her heart.

Thomas Anthony Castaneda

Thomas Anthony Castaneda, Sr., 78, passed on Jan. 3. He moved to Brighton in 1956. Tom attended Brighton High School. He spent over 39 years working for the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad.

He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus Tom loved volunteering at the Brighton Care Center, Catholic Charities, El Centro Su Teatro, Brighton Food Pantry, Brighton Housing Authority and Bonfils Blood Bank where he organized blood drives for years in Brighton Tom was preceded in death by a daughter Linda Marie and his parents. He is survived

by four sons and one daughter: Tom Jr. (Deb) of California; Robert of Phoenix; Kenny (Tonja) of Thornton; David (Michelle) of Phoenix; and DeAnna of Brighton; his sister Pauline Ponce of Denver and nine grandchildren, five greatgrandchildren and many nephews and nieces.

Rosary Mass will be Jan. 18 at 6 p.m. at St. Augustine’s Church. Funeral Mass will be on Jan. 19 at 11 a.m. at St. Augustine’s with internment to follow at Fairview Cemetery in Brighton. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Bonfils Blood Center of Denver Visit Vitalent.org\donatefunds.

Reaching for the stars and the exoplanets NASA traveling exhibit at the museum

The city of Fort Lupton brings the stars to the museum with the national traveling exhibit “Discover Exoplanets: The Search for Alien Worlds.”

The place is the Fort Lupton Museum, 453 First St. “It’s the right opportunity for everybody in Fort Lupton to come and see this wonderful display,” said Maggie Bidmead, museum coordinator.

The traveling exhibit explores the world of space and astronomy with subject matter searching for livable worlds that are outside the solar systems. NASA scientists are searching these worlds and studying how they could be similar to Earth.

The exhibit comes from the NASA library, and it’s educational with NASA-centric STEAM topics.

The exhibit is interactive with multimedia activities to build solar systems on a large touchscreen table. In addition, there’s a chance to learn about NASA’s most recent planet discoveries. Visitors can enter a drawing to win a crystal solar system. The museum is partnering with the Erie Community Library.

“We’re having a couple of special Saturdays with one or two speakers from the Space Science Institute from Boulder from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Jan. 22 and 29, “said Bidmead.

The Discover Exoplanets is designed by the Space Science Institute’s National Center for Interactive Learning (NCIL) in collaboration with NASA’s Universe of Learning. The project is made possible with support from NASA. Five apply to run marijuana businesses in town were for retail interests, while the fifth was for medical marijuana.

“All of the qualifications have been met?” asked Mayor Zo Stieber.

The four winning businesses have to come before the city’s planning commission and council.

New shelter coming Councilors unanimously approved a bid for a new shelter at City Hall during the Jan. 4 meeting.

Parks and Recreation Director Monty Schuman said the polygonstyle structure would be suitable for summer lunches for city staff, among other uses. The bid from Churchich Recreation won’t be any higher than

$34,000. Schuman said the city has an existing business relationship with the winning bidder.

“I think it’ll be a nice addition to the courtyard,” Stieber said.

City Hall closed City administrator Chris Cross said City Hall will be closed Monday, Jan. 17, in commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Council OKs water-rate increase

Fort Lupton City Council approved an increase in water rates during its first meeting of the new year Jan. 4.

Customers who use between 12,000 and 20,000 gallons of water per month will pay $7.12, an increase

of $1.31. Those who use more than 20,000 gallons per month pay $9.58, an increase of $1.76 per month. Nonpotable water rates did not change, but the city’s bulk water rate moved to $12, an increase of $2.

There was no change to the city’s sewer rates. The monthly base charge is $16.60. The charge per 1,000 gallons of use is $5.79, and the

non-metered sewer charge stayed at $38.75.

The monthly base charge stayed at $34.65, as did the $4.98 fee for monthly uses of less than 12,000 gallons of water use. It’s the first increase in three years. Council’s vote was unanimous.

Appointments

Council also appointed Lori Saine to serve a four-year term on the Fort Lupton Urban Renewal Authority. The term expires Jan. 19, 2026. Council also reappointed Mark Grajeda as the Fort Lupton Fire Protection District representative to FLURA for a five-year term. It expires Jan. 17, 2017.

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers celebrated its ribbon-cutting ceremony with the community of Brighton on January 6th. The official opening of the fast-casual restaurant was on December 28th.

“Brighton’s family-friendly atmosphere and the proximity to many different retail businesses and restaurants in the Prairie Center district make the area a great fit for Freddy’s,” said Brian Pyle, franchise owner and also own 15 additional locations in the Denver area.

According to officials, Freddy’s was founded in 2002 by Scott Redler, Bill, Randy, and Freddy Simon in Wichita, Kansas.

Freddy’s serves up a specialty steakburger with 100% ground beef sprinkled with Freddy’s Famous steakburger & fry seasoning. Also, on the menu is Vienna beef hot dogs with shoestring fries and Freddy’s famous fry sauce. Throughout the day they also serve freshly churned frozen custard. forum, asking questions focusing on oil and gas, protecting rural areas, crime, transportation, the pandemic, and the 2020 election.

The primary will occur June 28.

Greg Lopez, who lives in Elizabeth currently, said Polis does not care about Weld County or Colorado families.

“His goal is to make sure that when and solar replace fossil fuels, he doesn’t care about Weld County, he doesn’t care about the families that work hard,” he said. “We are going to make him a one-term governor so he doesn’t make Coloradans suffer.”

Morrison’s Jason Lopez, CEO at NANO Rx, a pharmaceutical ingredient maker, said he has seen firsthand how oil and gas benefits the country.

“I come from an oil and gas background and protect the oil and gas sites all over the world being in the military. Seeing the prosperity does bring in economic value,” he said.

He argued against over-regulation.

“One of the things that I do not agree with is over-regulation of industries,” he said. “We need to put new policies in place that can thrive industries, air quality control, ERP systems, quality management, along with the environment that needs to be protected. We have the technology to do it. We just need to implement it in the right situations — right places and in the right

Neuschwanger said it should not come as a surprise to oil and gas workers and their families.

“Gov. Polis told you exactly what he’s going to do when he ran for office back in 2017 when he said that in the next 40 years Colorado would be a 100 percent green efficient state,” Neuschwanger said.

“Just recently in Senate Bill 260, the transportation initiative, he said that there’d be a push for 940,000 electric vehicles on the road by 2030. “ She promised to focus on preserving that rural industry.

“For Weld County, I will stand up for every single rancher and farmer across our state, I will make sure to reduce stagflation,” she said. “We bring back our oil and gas industry in Colorado and focus on natural resources such as the advanced nuclear power plants and Platteville.”

Fort St. Vrain, the former nuclear plant that generates electricity by burning coal, is a quarter-mile northeast of the Weld County town.

Fry, the general manager at Littleton’s DC Power Industrial, said the current push towards green energy policies actually hurts lower-income Coloradans.

“Current energy policy right now is all green energy by 2040. So think about it, if you have a gas stove and you have to pay,” Fry said. “So from a gas stove to electric, you have to run the right line which is 220.

Then you’ve got to upgrade your gas furnace to electric. How many people do you think in the low-income bracket can do that with fixed incomes?”

Pandemic response The Republican candidates also had criticism for Polis’ handling of the COVID-19 response. Fry said it actually allowed the most vulnerable to die.

“The elderly are more susceptible to death than younger kids,” Fry said. “The elderly are the ones we take care of first and, second, take care of the children and the mothers. The damage has been done to our society. It’s enormous right now.”

He said he would do things differently, but was not specific.

“We heard enough of masks, social distancing, face shields, and double masks,” Fry said. “We are going to do the right thing and take care of it.”

Frisco’s Gray-Ginsberg said he favors masks, but had a darker theory about the disease, which he tied into the New Year’s Eve fires in Lousiville.

“It is by a bio war against us Americans, especially us as a demographic and it’s in the newspaper,” he said. “The Christian sect is being accused of starting the fires. I’m Christian, but I’m not part of the sect. I think it’s a bio war and we’re the targets. If I was governor, there would be a massive mask mandate.”

Elizabeth’s Greg Lopez called the state’s COVID response incompetent.

“The governor has misguided policies has hurt Colorado beyond comparison,” he said. “I don’t think Gov. Polis is a bad person. But he has shown us his incompetence. He has no idea what emotional intelligence is all about, with the mental health damage that he’s done to our

kids.”

He noted that Colorado’s pandemic shutdown forced people to be alone when they died.

“I want to remind people that people died alone, because of his f policies,” Greg Lopez said. “People couldn’t go to funerals, because t of what he did. We had kids that t couldn’t even graduate across the a stage because of his misguided r policies. We don’t even know what b he is going to do to the rest of our I state, our economy, and our kids.

How dare he do this to us? It is time o to make sure Gov. Polis realizes thata he’s going be held accountable for H his mistakes.”

Morrison’s Jason Lopez said the h t reaction was overblown.

“We should not live in fear due to b this pandemic. Our bodies are an amazing operating system biologically,” he said.

Neuschwanger said leaders should have begun preparing for COVID-19 even before 2019 was over.

“I used to run a lot of mass casualty incidents, and here’s how I would run COVID differently,” she said. “Back in December of 2019 when we first knew that the China virus escaped the Wuhan lab, I would have started looking at PPE right then. And also talked to my local hospitals about the possibility of it hitting the United States.”

Don’t fall victim to tax scams It’s that time of year, when we gather the forms and documents we need to file taxes.

Unfortunately, it’s also the busy season for tax scammers. How can you avoid being scammed?

And watch out for “phishing” emails supposedly sent by the IRS. In reality, the IRS does not send unsolicited emails to taxpayers, it won’t discuss tax account information with you via email, and it won’t use emails to solicit sensitive financial and personal information.

“Senate Bill 260 was just proposed in May and passed, which is a $5.85 billion spending bill to increase transportation by making 940,000 electric cars available by 2030 (with) charging stations across the United States.”

Fry said he would aim to eliminate government commissions, especially the state’s transportation commission.

“I know this mess at the state level. It’s the biggest slush fund waste of money you can imagine in transportation. This is a simple way to save money when you get a job with the state.”

BRIEFS Watts named to national committee Brighton City Councilman Tim Watts has been elected to the National League of Cities 2022 Public Safety and Crime Prevention Federal Advocacy Committee. The term is for one year.

“I’m honored to have been elected to serve on this committee,” Watts said in a statement. “I’m glad I can continue to actively participate in the NLC, and I look forward to putting the ideas and concerns of our great city front and center in the discussions we will have.”

As a member of the committee, Watts will play a role among a diverse group of local leaders in shaping policy positions and advocating on behalf of America’s municipalities before Congress, with the administration and at home.

Watts is the only Colorado representative on the committee. He joins 32 other members and leadership.

Recycle your Christmas tree The City of Brighton will offer Christmas tree recycling through Sunday, Jan. 16, at three locations, Brighton Park south parking lot at Ninth Avenue and Midland Street, the Brighton Sports Complex at 1111 Judicial Center Drive, and at Ken Mitchell Park, 889 Kinglet Court.

Trees can be dropped off at any time of the day. Residents are asked to remove everything from their tree before dropping it off. Only Christmas trees will be accepted. No yard waste or lumber is allowed.

“ValenSign’s Day was a huge hit last year. It brought so much joy to the community in the midst of the pandemic,” said Gary Montoya, events and downtown initiative manager. “We are excited to bring it back again.”

models for their peers, according to a statement. The statement also said this program provides businesses, the community and civic leaders an opportunity to actively demonstrate their support for the young people in our community and recognize them for their accomplishments.

The nominations are open to sixth- through 12th-graders. The deadline for nominations is Monday, Jan. 31.

Youth summer job launch The city of Brighton’s youth services department will be hosting its annual Growing Grads Summer Job Launch from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 19, at City Hall, 500 S. Fourth Ave. It’s a chance for youngsters interested in interning or working for the city over the summer to build resumes, get tips and tracks for obtaining summer jobs and find out more about what the city has to offer during the summer.

Attendance at the summer job launch is a must to be eligible for a paid summer internship with the city.The paid internship program gives participants ages 14 to 21 the opportunity to work for various city departments for 15 to 20 hours a week for eight weeks.

Trash Bash dates for 2022 in place The city of Brighton announced its dates for Trash Bash in 2022. It’s a chance for residents to get rid of large items.

The first chance is the weekend of Friday, April 29. The second is the weekend of Friday, Sept. 23. Both will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Brighton Wastewater Treatment Facility, 325 N. Kuner Road.

Those with special needs can call the city for pick-up service April 27 and 28 and again Sept. 21 and 22.
