The Weld Legacy Trail received a recycled bench made of over 500 pounds of recycled plastic donated from the Carbon Valley Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, according to the press release by Weld County.

“Our first collection of plastic, the Highland lake Historical Pioneer Cemetery received a bench, and we also helped the Carbon Valley High Plains Library reach their goal, and they received a bench for their walking path around the library. In our second collection, the chapter members voted on placing the next bench on the Weld Legacy Trail,” said Debra Brodhead, Chapter Regent of the group.

The TREX bench overlooks a pond owned by the Central Water Conservancy. The Weld Legacy Trail extends from the Weld County Southwest Service Center into St. Vrain State Park. The Weld County Commissioners approved the bench and an onsite presentation ceremony at the Weld Legacy Trail was held on December 17th with Weld County Commissioners Lori Saine and Scott James.

With help from the Weld County Sheriff’s Office, the Southwest Weld County Motor Vehicle Office, the Town of Mead, and numerous families and friends volunteered to help the Carbon Valley Chapter NSDAR collect over 500 pounds of plastic film in six months to build the bench. Then Carbon Valley NSDAR donated the bench.

“We are now working on our third collection and will vote on the recipient of this next bench during our February chapter meeting.

Every time we meet our goal for a new bench, we are excited to present it to a recipient that our chapter members vote on. This project is very much a team effort,” said Brodhead.

Brian David Jones passed away suddenly at his home in Brighton, CO on December 24, 2021 with his family by his side. Born in Niskayuna, New York on May 10, 1975, he is the son of Robert Michael, and Susan Ann (Ravaioli) Jones. He is survived by Nicole, his wife and best friend of 20 years; his daughter Kelcey Jones of Fort Collins, CO; his son Bryce Jones of Brighton, CO; sister Lisa Jones Wolf (Evan) of Burnt Hills, NY; brother Stephen Jones (Christine) of Glenville, NY; in-laws Allen and Louise Henry of Plattsburgh, NY, and lots of loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews, and his devoted canine sidekick, Jackson.

Brian is predeceased by his Uncles Robert Coager and Mario Ravaioli Jr, his maternal grandparents, Mario and Helen Ravaioli, and paternal grandparents, Robert and Stella Jones.

A 1993 graduate of Burnt Hills Ballston Lake High School, Brian was co-captain of the Spartan football team during his senior year. He attended Hudson Valley Community College for one year before transferring to SUNY-Cortland, where he went on to earn a BS degree in Physical Education with a concentration in coaching, graduating in 1999 with his brother Steve. Brian participated in Cortland’s intercollegiate football program playing offense and defense for the Red Dragons, and he continued to love and carry the Red Dragon spirit throughout his life.

Following graduation, he accepted a position as a Physical Education teacher and Athletic Director at Agate School District #300 in Agate, CO, where he served for 2 years.

In 2003 he became a Physical Education teacher at Belle Creek Charter School in Henderson, Colorado, where he assumed the role of Athletic Director in 2004. He held both of these positions at Belle Creek for 19 years. During his tenure at Belle Creek, he wore many hats: coach, educator, colleague, mentor, and above all, he instilled in his students a dedication and work ethic and helped them to see their potential to become the best versions of themselves.

He also loved watching and playing golf, especially with his wife Nicole, and he liked rooting for the Tennessee Volunteers (especially Football and Softball with his son and daughter), New York Yankees and the New Jersey Devils. He loved to cook, which was part of a passion he enjoyed with his family and friends. Some of his favorite things were grilling and smoking meat on Sundays and holidays, and cooking with his wife and family. He had an insatiable love for fishing, which spanned his entire life. In his youth he enjoyed fishing on his grandfather’s boat with his dad and brother on the Sacandaga Reservoir near his home, and also on Mississippi Lake in Ontario, Canada. In the spaces between his work and home life he was always trying to find time to fish. His rod and reel were a permanent staple in the back of his truck, and he would fish for any amount of time no matter the weather: rain, sleet, or snow. He loved sharing his fishing passion with his family, in particular with his nieces and nephews on Lake Champlain.

His personal characteristics were that of a superhero on Earth. He would help others without hesitation. Brian never needed to know the why, just who it was and where he needed to go. Harold was born in Denver, Colorado to William (Bill) Suazo and Theresa Marie (Aragon) Suazo; he was the eldest of 5 children. He was raised in a devout Catholic family and served as an altar boy for several years. His Catholic and Christian faith was a very deep and personal anchor for him throughout life.

In 1978, Harold and Mary started a family, bought property and built their dream home in Henderson, Colorado. They had 3 daughters, Lisa, Lora, and Abrian, and raised them in this home.

He was also raised in a family of musicians.

This love of music and sharing it with family and offering it to God remained very strong throughout his life.

After 25 years of marriage, he and Mary divorced in 1995. He remarried in 2006 to Michele (Siegfried) Suazo and they were married for 10 years.

Harold went to school in Brighton, until his family moved to Northglenn in 1962 and he graduated from Northglenn High School in 1968. He played trumpet in the band, took part in drama, and spent much time after school and during summers taking care of his younger brothers and sisters. He worked at “Gino’s Italian Restaurant” during high school and several years after.

His final 16 years of employment were spent working for Tiger Technologies, an electronics manufacturing company. He especially enjoyed working for Tiger and the international trips he took with this 2nd family.

After high school graduation, he attended Regis University, where he graduated in 1972 with a Sociology degree. He married Mary Esther Humphrey in June 1971 in Northglenn, Colorado.

Harold passed away on December 19, 2021 in Denver with his daughters by his side.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bill, brother, Dan, and many beloved aunts and uncles.

He is survived by his 3 daughters: Lisa Suazo (Scott), Lora Saeler (Chad), Abrian London (Dave); 5 grandchildren: Padon, Sisera, and They lived in Brighton for many years Reaiah Saeler, Gavin and Elina London; and Harold worked for Adam’s County mother, Theresa (Aragon) Suazo; sisters, Government and the County Commissioner’s Mary Kloepfer (Warren), Sue Ehalt (George); Office. He eventually left government to work brother Chris Suazo; as well as many beloved cousins and aunts and uncles. in the field of Electronics Sales.

Janet is survived by and will continue living through her husband, Galen Jackson and her son, Justin (Bobbie) and

From caterpillars to butterflies to the District Attorney Quist students display art next year at Adams County Government Building

An art display by middle school artists meant to evoke life during COVID will transform into a traveling display at the Adams County District Attorney’s office.

More than 200 Roger Quist Middle School students created a permanent art installation at the school of butterflies to represent a year of living like cocoons during a pandemic and emerging with resiliency by spreading their wings like butterflies.

The Adam County District Attorney’s Office caught wind of the Quist Middle school display – Colorado Community Media reported on it – and reached out to the school to collaborate on an art installation to be displayed in the lobby of the district attorney’s office.

“This idea was born out of the article you wrote and we saw it in our office- we were inspired by what we saw,” said Chris Hopper Director of Communications 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

“We’ve all faced so many challenges during COVID, and we continue to face those challenges,” Hopper said. “We thought it would be nice to connect with young people in our community that we serve in a sort of a unique way.”

The art exhibit will be a traveling exhibit and it will also be placed in the Adams County Government Office. Because it will travel, the teachers and students decided to make butterflies.

The student from sixth grade to eighth grade will make over 200 butterflies templates and will use colored markers to create the designs and patterns.

Taylor Marino, Quist Middle School Science teacher, said when Chris Hopper contacted them over the summer he pointed out a mental health initiative idea for them on how to celebrate the effort to help kids overcome COVID by creating art.

“To be able to have this displayed publicly, I think speaks to the resilience of our kids and the adults that they’re working with us on this

collaboration,” said Marino.

Beth Marks-Berner, Quist Middle School English Language Arts teacher, said she was in France when she learned of the student’s commission.

“I said yeah! The kids have been just so enthusiastic,” Marks-Berner said.

The DA’s office brings employees to the school every Thursday to sit with the students, and collaborate on the art project together.

“We have several employees who come almost every Thursday to take part in this project. We thought it would be good to just have the students and the adults interact together talking to each other while they’re doing something- in essencesort of therapeutic for all of them,” said Hopper.

Marks-Berner said the year had

been difficult for the students. She does not know if her students lost any academics but they lost social skills.

“This is a nice way to be together with no pressure- hang with your friends- have snacks and listen to music,” she said.

Hopper said the art installation will be displayed at the DA’s office main atrium when complete and they talked to Adams County so it will be displayed in the county government center at some point as well. “’It gives the students some additional recognition for the hard work they’ve put in every Thursday for quite a while. It builds that relationship with people in our community, outside of the courthouse, and outside of the Department of Human Services office. It is unique and can be very therapeutic during very difficult times for a lot of people,” said Hopper.

The students and staff are excited to share with the public the art that will go into these government buildings and are looking forward to the final product.

“The butterflies are a symbol for the metamorphosis process of change and some people would say rebirth,” said Marino.

“The process of turning from a caterpillar into a butterfly and what that symbolizes for kids and adults alike. I think it’s especially relevant now since we’ve been going through an exceptional amount of changes over the last several years. We are all caterpillars and butterflies.”

Westminster Council touts co-responder program

Westminster city council unanimously approved $318,000 from the State of Colorado Department of Human Services Office of Behavioral Health Co-Responder services program grant on Dec. 21.

“We’ve seen tremendous usage of this program,” acting Deputy Chief Edna Hendershot said.

The program handles more than 130 calls and referrals a month, Hendershot said, and they are looking to expand the program. Currently, only

two co-responders and a supervisor are on the grant and Hendershot said she would like to add a third coresponder and a case manager.

“We certainly could use them much more than we are able to with the amount of time that they can spend,” Hendershot said.

The program is designed to help the police department address mental health issues, according to a press release from the city.

sional to deal with the highly specialized needs of someone in crisis,” the press release said. “The goal of the Mental Health Co-Responder Program is to prevent individuals in crisis from unnecessarily going to the hospital for a mental health evaluation or to jail and into the criminal justice system as a result of escalating behavior which may be compounded by their crisis.”

Mayor Pro Tem David DeMott told a story of his daughter experiencing a mental health crisis and ending up cuffed in the back of a police car.

“It’s a matter of resources that we

provide to you all because someone in a mental health crisis does need to be safe as well as the people around them,” he said. “This is part of the rethinking of how we deal with those kinds of things, not just as a city but as a society, so I’m excited to see this continuing to go on.”

“I think mental health and this co-responder program should be one of our highest priorities to expand,” Councilor Ezeadi said.

The program is funded through the grant, and Ezeadi said he hopes to see the program in the next budget.

Colo. children not yet impacted by omicron

Local cases of more transmissible variant are starting to emerge

Doctors nationwide say that while children have been the least impacted in contracting COVID-19, it does not mean they are immune, and with a third variant hitting the streets of Colorado cases will continue to go up.

Samuel Dominguez, a pediatric disease specialist at Children’s Hospital Colorado, said statewide case numbers are holding steady with young patients. However, Dominguez said while national media outlets are reporting continued increases in young patients contracting the new omicron variant with hospital stays increasing, Colorado is still lagging behind.

Dominguez said CHC facilities along the Front Range had started seeing a decrease in young patients just before the Thanksgiving holiday. That decrease has continued as more cases of omicron are starting to be reported at all age levels.

Because Colorado cases are further behind the jump in COVID rates in states like Florida and New York, Dominguez said infectious disease doctors are relying on data from those states as they prepare to handle the anticipated increase.

Doctors say that children have been the least impacted in contracting COVID-19 but fear that could change as a third variant begins hitting the streets in Colorado.

“Really, in terms of what we are seeing here right now, it’s just not quite where the rest of the country is,” Dominguez said. “At the state level, we have no real good data for comparisons (between the delta and omicron variants) at this time.”

Even as Colorado is playing catchup with the rest of the country, Dominguez said the newest variant it is here, and the biggest concern is how transmissible it is.

Like Colorado doctors, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) continues to work on a world scale to get a grasp on what kind of impact the new variant will have on the U.S. As cases spread, the CDC reported that omicron spreads more easily than the original COVID strain and more studies are needed to see how it compares to the Delta variant.

As omicron cases of COVID increase in Colorado, infectious disease doctors and the Centers for Disease Control continue to assess the impact it will have on SHUTTERSTOCK citizens.

World Health Organization (WHO) on Nov. 24. By Nov. 26, WHO classified Omicron as a “variant of concern.” The U.S. followed suit with the same labeling by Nov. 30. By Dec. 1, the U.S. had its first confirmed case of the new variant that is now competing with the Delta variant, which has been the dominant strain since summer.

On the website, the CDC stressed that “anyone with Omicron infection can spread the virus to others, even if they are vaccinated or don’t have symptoms.”

The CDC said more data is needed to know if Omicron infections, including breakthrough infections for vaccinated citizens, cause more sever illness or death than infection with other COVID variants.

According to the CDC, the current vaccines on the market, including Pizer and Moderna, are expected to protect people from “severe” illness, hospitalizations and deaths. However, the CDC warned that it expects an increase in breakthrough cases among people who are fully vaccinated.

U.S. health officials continue to encourage residents to not only get the first round of vaccinations, but also get the booster shot for added protection.

In children, Dominguez said, vaccinations are an important preventive step for ages 5 and older to be protected as much as possible.

As omicron becomes the most prevalent variant spreading COVID, Dominguez said winter break from schools is both good and bad to help prevent the spread among children and youths.

“The time off means decreases in spreading (COVID) in the schools,” he said. “But the bad side is there are a lot more holiday gatherings this time of year where it can also

spread. Traveling also tends to increase this time of year.”

As families gathered and traveled throughout the holiday season, Johns Hopkins University reported the highest total cases of COVID since pandemic tracking officially began on Jan. 21, 2020. Breaking the record on Dec. 29, data showed the U.S. had 377,014 confirmed cases.

In Colorado, the state had just over 4,700 confirmed cases on Dec. 29, up about 67% from 2,824 confirmed cases the week before.

As cases increase, the need for testing centers has also increased.

According to the Douglas County website, testing at Sky Ridge Medial Center resumes this month. In Arapahoe County, testing sites can be seen with increasing lines at the UCHealth Campus along Arapahoe Road and the Arapahoe Crossing Shopping Center.

Still, Dominguez said, the “silver lining” for children and young adults is that it is the demographic least impacted in contracting COVID. “Overall, children have done a lot better handling this than adults,” he said. “But to say children are not impacted or cannot get this at all is just wrong.”

Dominguez stressed that children can still get COVID, spread COVID and some can get sick from it. Another area of concern for the younger population, Dominguez said, is that children can contract a condition known as MIS-C. MIS-C, or multisystem inflammatory syndrome, is a serious condition associated with COVID-19 where different body parts can become inflamed, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, or gastrointestinal organs.

BRIEFS Brighton Police hosting online meeting on Jan. 19 The public is invited to attend the Brighton Police Department’s upcoming quarterly community meeting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 19 on Zoom. The Investigations Division, including the general crime detectives, crime scene investigators and sexual crimes detectives, will be discussing investigations, evidence processing, crime scenes and more.

A Q&A session will follow for staff to respond to questions from the public.

Recycle your Christmas tree The City of Brighton will offer Christmas tree recycling through Sunday, Jan. 16 at three locations, Brighton Park south parking lot at 9th Ave. and Midland St., the Brighton Sports Complex at 1111 Judicial Center Dr. and at Ken Mitchell Park, 889 Kinglet Court.

Trees can be dropped off at any time of the day. Residents are asked to remove everything from their tree before dropping it off. Only Christmas trees will be accepted.

No yard waste or lumber is allowed.

Trees will be chipped and mulch will be available on Jan. 17 on a first-come, first-serve basis at each location listed above. For more information, contact the Brighton Parks Department at 303-655-2048.

Youth Commission launches training program With over half of the Brighton Youth Commission graduating in 2022, preparations are being made to fill those positions with the launch of the Brighton Youth Commissioner-in-Training Program.

For the 2021-2022 commission year, the Brighton Youth Commission has 15 graduating seniors whose positions will need to be filled. The Commissioner-in-Training Program was created to help with this transition by training Brighton Youth Corp Members and youth in Brighton to prepare for the Youth Commission.

In the training program, participants can expect to learn professional skills and leadership opportunities and build lifelong connections. Each participant will be paired with a current youth commissioner to help mentor them through the process.

Though participation in the program does not guarantee a spot on the commission, it will assist in preparation. Interviews may happen as spots open up throughout the year. If no spots open up throughout the year, the participants should expect to interview for a spot on the commission in July of 2022.

Applicants must be in 8th - 10th grades for the 2021-2022 school year.

Applicants must also live within Brighton city limits. To apply, fill out this form. The deadline for applications is Friday, December 31.

Program mentees must attend every Youth Corps meeting the first Wednesday of the month. Mentees must also attend Youth Commission meetings the first Thursday of every month.
