General Laura Richardson has advice for Northglenn residents. “Volunteer, get out in the community and get to know your community and be a part of your community,” she said. “Be involved. Don’t sit at home and be a recluse, on the Xbox or whatever, be out, be part of making change. Be part of having folks hear your voice. Join Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts, all this kind of stuff. Being on a sports team, being in a band, being with other people,” she said. This involvement, she says, will prepare folks for their future. “Then once you graduate from high school, it’s not like `what am I going to do.’ Well shoot, if you got out and you were part of something while in high school you might know of the opportunities,” she said. Gen. Richardson spoke at Metropolitan State University of Denver’s fall commencement ceremony on Friday, Dec. 17 at the Colorado Convention Center with two ceremonies. Richardson has strong ties to the North Denver Metro Area. A Northglenn native and Northglenn High School alum, she and her high school swim team still hold records. In fact, her mom, a former writer for the Northglenn Thornton Sentinel, would report those records in the weekly newspaper. She graduated from Metropolitan State University in 1986 and then accepted a commission as an Army aviator. She has a masters of science degree from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces and was the military aid to

Now, she is the highest-ranking female in the Army as the commander of the U.S. Southern Command. She comments on how being a woman strengthens her work. “I think because I’m a woman I think I’m more of a human person,” she said. With much of her work involving countries with very patriarchal regimes, sometimes leaders question her ability to lead based on her sex. “I think it’s just folks aren’t sure, maybe in some cases, what they’re going to get,” she said. She credits her roots for steering her in the right direction. “Coming home, it’s really fun for

me,” Richardson said. Her secret to her success? “MSU,” she said. National Issues Throughout her service, she saw climate change worsen and become more of a national security threat. She talked about more intense storms and how various national and local agencies work in tandem to respond. “Climate change is definitely there. Make no mistake,” she said. With the recent defense bill that passed Congress, serious crimes such as sexual assault, rape, kidnapping and manslaughter, will be prosecuted by an independent office formed by the Department of Defense. Though, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y. pushed for the crimes to be handled outside of the chain of command entirely.

With the military addressing sexual assault, Gen. Richardson notes the issue exists not just in the branches. “This isn’t just a problem in the military. It’s a problem in our entire society,” she said. “There’s no room for it. There is absolutely no room for this in our military.” She thinks the issue breaks down trust and camaraderie. “When you’re on a range, you don’t shoot your buddy when you’re trying to qualify your weapon,” she said. The bill, however, fell short of requiring women to register for the draft. She said that all combat positions within the department of defense opened up for women to serve, and she said the country might not be ready for that yet. “That’s a decision by our country,” she said.

August 21, 1948 - December 11, 2021
Robert “Bob” Aichelman, 73, of Hudson, passed away on December 11, 2021, in Brighton, Colorado. Bob was born in Denver, Colorado to William W. and Arlean (Thomas) Aichelman on August 21, 1948, and was the youngest of four siblings. Faith, family, and hard work were the pillars of Bob’s life. He attended mass regularly with his family at St. Augustine Church and served as Eucharistic minister to the homebound for several years. Bob proudly became a journeyman electrician and enjoyed working on the family home. He was also the proud father of four daughters and enjoyed doting on his four grandchildren. He is survived by his loving wife, Cecilia (VonFeldt) Aichelman; daughters, Tina Haag (Brian), Erin Cure (Tony), Megan Aichelman, and Jessica Fritz (John); grandchildren, Kaitlyn Haag, Brandon Haag, Stella Cure, and Rylus Cure; brothers, Jim Aichelman (Chris) and Jerry Aichelman; and

Kenneth “Chip” Leland Krickbaum, Jr. was born November 1, 1964 in Brighton, CO to Kenneth Krickbaum, Sr. and Betty (Byers) Krickbaum. He passed away December 20, 2021.

After they divorced, he met Debra Antonowicz and they were together for several years. He worked several jobs in construction, but his talent was concrete and form setting. He loved working in the mountains and enjoyed wildlife, hunting and fishing. He also loved watching the Broncos. He and his mother were sideline coaches via text. In 2019, he was hospitalized with a severe bone infection for two months. Doctors were

Grace Gudka was born on August 3, 1933 and passed away on December 19, 2021. She was eighty-eight years old. Grace was the proud mother of five children: Sharon Gudka-Befort (Steve) of Mesa, Arizona, Karen Else (Harlan) of Laguna Vista, Texas, Mike Gudka (Juliet) of Clarion, Iowa, C.W. Gudka (Linda) of Strasburg, Colorado and Robert (Dawna) Gudka of Keenesburg, Colorado. Grace was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Gudka and son, C.W. Gudka. Grace’s greatest love was her family and doing things to support and celebrate their successes. Grace adored her fourteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She was a stay-at-home mom who loved to sew, cook and read. When she wasn’t at home, she was attending her children’s
or grandchildren’s sporting events, theatre and band performances, academic competitions and graduations. Grace made a positive difference in each of their lives. Grace believed God’s promise that whoever believes and trusts in Jesus will have everlasting life. Right now, Grace is experiencing God’s promise. Multiple Adams County offices, as well as several social service agencies, will get a new home, based out of a neighborhood hub. Commerce City created a new one of its kind community campus hub at South Platte Crossing, 7190 Colorado Blvd. It combines neighborhood health and social services centers with numerous agencies all in one location. “We hoping to get as many services and supports on-site as possible to try and decrease barriers for families accessing the services that they need, “ said Stephanie Henderson, who works at the hub. “I’m with the Early Childhood Partnership of Adams County and the Early Childhood Council. We convened this collaborative, but we’re also providing services and support in this building. We opened up a family resource and support center about a month ago.” The Commerce City Community Campus (C4) at South Platte Crossing provides services on campus such as access to housing, Adams County Department of motor vehicle, Cultivando, ECPAC childhood partnership of Adams County, Maria Droste Counseling Center for mental health, a Precious Child, Front Range clinic, Creative Treatment Options, and
United for a New Economy. Coming soon and already provide services, the City of Commerce City, Kids First Health Care, Kids in Need of Dentistry (Kind), Colorado Orthodontic Foundation, Tri-County Health Department, Women, Infants & Children (WIC), and The Urban Land Conservancy. Also, on campus, they have a food and clothing pantry that provides food, diapers, and children’s clothing for those in need. A care package is put together to take home. Kids first Health Care provides health care to children from birth to age 21. It doesn’t matter where they live. Also, parents received help with health insurance or Medicaid. If families are unable to qualify for the assistant they are charged an affordable sliding scale fee. “There is going to be so many different resources in one place that hopefully alleviate a lot of those issues that families have with transportation or knowing who to talk or when,” said Maria Zubia Kids First Health Care Director of Community Outreach. “That’s why they call it a hub because we want people to come here and start to realize what is it that you need and whatever is going to make it better for you, we can help you with that. This is the model of what we’ve been thinking about for years.” Kids In Need of Destiny (KIND) will also be located in the hub to help children in need with oral health. “KIND provides a solid founda-

Trees can be dropped off at any time of the day. Residents are asked to remove everything from their tree before dropping it off. Only Christmas trees will be accepted. No yard waste or lumber is allowed. Trees will be chipped and mulch will be available on Jan. 17 on a first-come, first-serve basis at each location listed above. Youth Commission launches training program With over half of the Brighton Youth Commission graduating in 2022, preparations are being made to fill those positions with the launch of the Brighton Youth Commissioner-in-Training Program. For the 2021-2022 commission year, the Brighton Youth Commission has 15 graduating seniors whose positions will need to be filled. The Commissioner-inTraining Program was created to help with this transition by training Brighton Youth Corp Members and youth in Brighton to prepare for the Youth Commission. In the training program, participants can expect to learn professional skills and leadership opportunities and build lifelong connections. Each participant will be paired with a current youth commissioner to help mentor them through the process. Though participation in the program does not guarantee a spot on the commission, it will assist in preparation. Interviews may happen as spots open up throughout the year. If no spots open up throughout the year, the participants should expect to interview
for a spot on the commission in July of 2022. Applicants must be in 8th - 10th grades for the 2021-2022 school year. Applicants must also live within Brighton city limits.
