Legislators talked about economic recovery, health care, child services, education, the environment and more during the annual Adams County Regional Partnership Legislative Preview Breakfast Dec. 10 at Northglenn’s Parsons Theater. But the first issue on deck? The timing of the meeting. “I think as business people and as a municipality, people that represent the community, should really pay attention to. And that is for a single parent to make a 7a.m. meeting, let’s think about this,” Adams County Commissioner Eva Henry pointed out to the crowd. “Let’s think about this. They have to get their 3-, 4-year old up at 5 a.m., get dressed, fed and out the door by 6 a.m. so they can make a 7 a.m. meeting that could easily be at 8.” The tired crowd applauded the idea. Rep. Matt Gray, who came late to the meeting after driving his children to school, said he would have benefited from a later meeting. On stage sat Rep. Adrienne Benavidez, Rep. Shannon Bird, Rep. Lindsey Daugherty, Gray, state Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer, state Sen. Dominick Moreno, Rep. Kyle Mullica and state Sen. Faith Winter. Much of the talk surrounded the American Rescue Plan Act. Congress passed the American Rescue Plan Act, and legislators will brainstorm policy on how to distribute those funds. Four main

David Wesley Ritchey
December 31, 1961 - December 3, 2021

David Wesley Ritchey went home to be with the Lord on December 3, 2021. He was born on December 31, 1961 to Clinton and Elaine Ritchey in Greeley, Colorado. He grew up in the Hudson and Fort Lupton areas, where he enjoyed riding his bike to the pool, helping with the farming and ranching activities, and spending time with his older brother, Joel, younger sisters, Brenda and Kim, and cousins. It was during this time that he also discovered his love for rodeo, and he soon found himself riding on the back of anything that would stand still long enough. David graduated from Weld Central High School in 1980. During his time there, he excelled in wrestling and FFA. He got his love of working with cattle from his dad and spent his life in the agriculture industry. Rodeo remained an integral part of his life; he gained his pro card in bareback riding and later went on to judge. He was awarded Mountain States Circuit Rookie of the Year in the mid 80s and CSRA Judge of the Year in 1989. This passion was shared by his brother, cousins, and several of his friends. They spent many hours on the road together throughout high school and beyond as they travelled to rodeos around the region. In 1990, Kim introduced David to one of her coworkers, Stacie Ruyle, at the Greeley Stampede. This introduction was the beginning of a true love story, and David and Stacie were married in Wiggins 6 months later on January 11, 1991. They made their first home near Clinton’s house in Hudson, where they welcomed their daughter, Morgen, in September 1993 and son, Corey, in January 1996. Later that year, they moved south of Wiggins, where they worked together on the farm and ranch. David became an active member of the community, serving on the Wiggins School Board for 8 years and on the Southeast Weld and Morgan County fair boards. He also enjoyed line judging the home volleyball games and refereed wrestling tournaments around the
David’s greatest joy was watching his children grow and find their niche in life. He loved helping them in their various activities, including their years of showing livestock in 4-H and participating in sports. This extended to his nieces, nephews, and children of his friends as well. David was thrilled to gain the title of “Papa’’ with the birth of his first grandchild, Penelope Rose, to Morgen and her husband, Bryson Grennan, in May 2021. David was an active member of Harvest Fellowship Church in Brighton for almost 30 years. He formed a close relationship with his pastor, Steve Blackwell, and his wife Debbie and their family during this time. His faith grew throughout his life and remained strong until his passing. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched, but we find great joy in knowing that he is in Heaven and we will see him again. David was preceded in death by his dad, Clinton, in 2002, and mom, Elaine, in 2019. Left to mourn him are his wife Stacie, children Morgen (Bryson) Grennan, and Corey, granddaughter Penelope, brother Joel (Angie), sisters Brenda (Ed) Haffner and Kim (Dave) Wolf, his beloved dogs Sophie and Charlotte, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends.

Mills keeps seat in Great Snow Plow contest winners make parade mayor’s race Incumbent mayor claims 54% of vote Brighton voters had an early gift for Mayor Greg Mills Dec. 7, returning him to office in a run-off election. Mills collected 2,751 votes — 54% of the total votes cast — in the run-off to hold on to his seat as Brighton Mayor, compared to 2,340 votes for Laurie Lozano Maier. Mills will swear his oath of office for the next term at the council’s Jan. 4 meeting. The announcement came just prior Gregory Mills to 10 p.m. during the City Council’s Dec. 7 meeting from City Clerk Natalie Hoel while councilors were discussing Adams County’s replacement for Tri-County Health. Mills said he was temporarily speechless and promised to make a comment later in the meeting. Later in the meeting, Mills thanked voters for doing their civic duty and turning out to vote, before discussing his schedule for the rest of the year. “It’s going to be a good month,” Mill said. Mills and Maier were the top vote-getters in Brighton’s Nov. 2 ballot. Incumbent Mills wound up with just short of half the votes cast in the Nov. 2 ballot, with 3,599 votes out of the 7,618 cast, according to the state’s election site. Maier was next, with 2,682 votes – about 35% of the vote. Wayne Scott, the third candidate on the Nov. 2 ballot, had 1,337 votes. That’s about 17.6 percent of the total votes cast. In all, 7,618 Brighton voters cast a ballot in the November mayoral race. Hoel said runoff ballots were mailed to all registered Brighton voters, just shy of 24,000 ballots, and 5,091 were returned.

Nine elementary students won the City of Brighton Snow Plow naming contest for the 20212022 snow season. “We had so many creative name suggestions that made it quite difficult to select the winners of this contest,” said Michael Woodruff, Director of Public Works. “However, we are excited that we’ve begun a fun, new tradition here at the city of naming our snowplows.” The winners of the naming contest were awarded city recognition at the Brighton City Council meeting on December 7th. Not to mention the nine winners were on a float for the 26th Annual Festival of Lights parade on Saturday,
December 11th. The winning students: Darth Blader was named by Brek Hjelmen, fifth-grader at Achieve Institute at Pennock Elementary, and Richard Tryon, fifth-grader at Padilla Elementary. Blizzard of Oz was named by Madelyn Hendrickson, fifth-grader Reunion Elementary. Pablo Plowcasso was named by Harlan Montano, third-grader at Turnberry Elementary. Plowy Plowtupus was named by Lincoln Davis, fourth-grader at Pennock Elementary. Snow Busta - Wren Miles, fifth-grader at West Ridge Elementary. Blizzard Blaster was named by Venice Lozano, third-grader at Bromley East Charter School. Plowy McPlowFace was named by Dylan Brick, first-grader at Foundations Academy. She also expressed a call to action. “Build relationships with your legislators and make sure you’re letting us know, early and often how legislation impacts you and challenges that you’re having,” Bird said. Kirkmeyer said that with her experience as a small-business owner, she can help analyze the government’s expenditure and revenue to balance the budget. Kirkmeyer also discussed how a good education system can entice business. She said the legislators need to look at the School Finance Act and create more equity around schools. Daugherty struck the hearts of many when describing how child abuse continues to happen and goes unreported during these times. She has worked in juvenile law for nine years. “These kiddos are going through a lot, and they have no one,” she said. She pointed to the juvenile bills the Legislature brings to the floor and stressed the importance of them. Mullica, who has experience as a trauma nurse, explained how work needs to be done for nurses undergoing mental health complications due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted many health-care professionals are leaving the field. “We need to create an environment (doctors and nurses) can thrive,” he said. Winter noted the workplace harassment bills and the effort to change the culture within the workplace, which she hopes bias standard training will accomplish.
