Edward “Controler” Torres Jr. January 8, 1948 - November 23, 2021

Edwardo Torres Jr., affectionately aka “Controler” went to reside in the arms of our Lord and Savior on November 23, 2021, at the age of 73. At the time of his death, he was residing in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Controler was born on January 8, 1948, to Edwardo and Salome “Sally” (Lopez) Torres in Rio Grande, Texas. He married once and had a daughter, Elizabeth Torres, and two stepsons, Joe and Jessie Quintanilla. Eventually, Controler moved to Altoona, Pennsylvania with his long time significant other, Gloria Dugan.

In Controler’s younger years he could be found in parks around Denver picnicking.

He had a sense of humor which made many laugh at his antics. He loved playing pool, fishing, and became involved in hobbies such as bird watching. While living in Pennsylvania he enjoyed going to the senior center and was involved in many activities there.

Controler is survived by a daughter Elizabeth (Andrea) of Denver; sister Rose (Rafael) of Ft. Lupton; sister Yolanda of Brighton; sister Delfina of Three Folks, MT; sister Delores (Philip) of Brighton; brother Paul (Marie) of Houston, TX; brother John (Linda) of Brighton; brother Ray of Brighton; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and beloved friends.

Controler was preceded in death by his parents Edwardo and Salome “Sally” (Lopez) Torres; sister Mary; sister Rachel “Judy;” brother Joe “Pepe;” brother-in-law Jeff; sister Frances; and stepson Joe.

Controler will be laid to rest on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at 9:30 am at Ft. Logan National Cemetery. His absence will leave a large void in many hearts, but he is now Controler served our country in the United singing with the angels and enjoying the States Army and served a tour in Vietnam.

He was awarded the National Defense Service presence of our Lord.

Milton D. Wells

March 3, 1942 - December 2, 2021

Milton D. Wells passed away peacefully at home on Dec. 2, 2021.

Milton was born on March 2, 1942 in Fairview, OK to Pearlie and Violet Young Wells. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Harold Wells and sister Karen Wells Davis. Milton grew up in Fairview, OK and moved to Greeley, CO as a young man where he met his wife Pamela Quimby Wells. They married in 1965 and started a family in 1969 having two sons, David Alan and Steven Roy Wells.

Milton and Pam were married for 55 years.

Milton owned his own business for 7 years.

He also worked for the City of Denver, CO for 23 years in the Forrestry Department and retired to Rogers, AR in 1997. Milton enjoyed

the outdoors, fishing and working in the yard. He lived a religious life.

He was devout in his faith and to his family. Milton is survived by his wife Pam Wells of Rogers, AR, son David (Betsy) Wells of Pea Ridge, AR, son Steven (Cindy) Wells of Lakewood, CO, one granddaughter, three grandsons, two greatgrandchildren and two siblings Joan Hartley and Myron Wells. February 1, 1935 - November 28, 2021

Ed Doty, 86, of Brighton Colorado entered the gates of heaven peacefully from his home on November 28, 2021.

Michael Edward Doty Sr. was born in Topeka, Kansas on February 1, 1935 and was the third of four children born to Rose Seimer and Edward Doty. Ed met Doreen Mowrey in Derby, CO in 1957 and the two married May 25, 1958. In 1963 he built a house in Brighton, CO for his wife and children which he and Doreen resided for 52 years. Ed served his community as a volunteer firefighter for the Brighton Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years. He retired from United Airlines as a Lead Aircraft Mechanic after 37 years of employment. He had a passion for flying and owned two small planes of his own which were enjoyed by all. Ed traveled to many destinations but had a love for fishing in Alaska. For over 30 years of traveling to Alaska, his best times spent there were with his friends and taking his family fishing for salmon and halibut. Ed’s wish was to donate his body to science. He was such a generous man with so much love for others and his family. Ed loved spending time SCHRODER

with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. We will miss his wonderful stories and continue to share them with others. He was a loving husband, dad, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to so many and will be missed tremendously. Survived by his bride Doreen of 63 years, his son Mik (CJ) Doty, his three daughters, Lynda (Hans) Brewster, Tina Gutierrez, Susan (Jaime) Chavez, his 14 grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren.

He is also survived by his nieces and nephew.

Ed is preceded in death by both his parents, his brother Robert Doty, sisters, Pat Burrows and Rosemary Olson, infant daughter, Cindy Doty, nephew, Bob Townsend, and his grandson, Richard Lambert. Lucille “Virginia” (Lance) Schroder August 3, 1927 - November 20, 2021

Virginia was born in Grant, Nebraska to Charles and Martha Lance. Virginia was the oldest of four children. She married Duane Schroder in August of 1945 and they were married for 63 years.

Virginia was very involved in volunteer work until her children finished high school.

She then went to work for Adams County Courts, retiring as Clerk of the Courts. After retirement, her and Duane traveled the world with a travel club. Virginia enjoyed bowling and playing bridge.

Virginia is survived by her daughter, Connie (Don) Haiar; along with six grandchildren,

Jessica, Barbara, Doug, Trish, Stephanie and David; thirteen great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; three siblings; husband, Duane; son, Jerry; grandson, John; and great grandson, Josh.

Memorial Services honoring Virginia will be on Saturday, December 11, 2021, at 11:00 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, 1400 Skeel Street, Brighton, CO 80601.

Councilor resigns, faces DUI charges after run-in with police

Brighton Councilman Kris Jordinelli, who faces a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence after an incident with Brighton police this summer, resigned his council position Dec. 3.

A city statement said the remaining council members would take the next steps to fill the vacancy at a future council meeting. Jordinelli was elected in 2020.

His first court appearance -- a pretrial conference, according to district attorney spokesperson Chris Hopper -- is set for 9:30 a.m. Feb. 7.

A police report said officers saw Jordinelli’s unoccupied car at City Hall Aug. 17 and watched the councilor enter the building.

“Cmdr. (Matt) Domenico) greeted Kris and saw Kris was very intoxicated,” Daniel Barkus’ report said.

Officers went to Jordinelli’s home, which is a few blocks from City Hall.

“Kris then opened the main door and then the storm door,” the report said. “Kris was slow moving, and when he spoke, he had slurred speech. Kris had red watery eyes and was unsteady on his feet while standing at the door. Kris was shifting back and forth out of the doorway and told me, ‘You have no right to be here.’”

Barkus explained why officers were at the councilor’s home.

Jordinelli’s’ answer was, “I’m fine and they walked me home.” Barkus

asked about Jordinelli’s car, which was still at City Hall with the windows rolled down and unlocked.

“Kris opened the storm door and leaned out to try and look at his garage,” Backus’ Kris Jordinelli. report said. “Kris then leaned back into his house and continued to fumble with the keys or garage door opener. I asked Kris if he wanted to come outside and look, but he stayed standing in the doorway.”

The garage door closed.

“Kris said to me, ‘Do you know who I am”’ Backus’ report said.

“I replied, ‘Yeah, I know who you are,’ Kris replied, “I’m a city council member.’ I then replied, ‘Yeah, I know.’ Kris then said, ‘You don’t want to mess with me’ and shut the main door.”

Mayor Pro Tem Matt Johnston told police Jordinelli looked “disoriented” just before the Aug. 17 meeting started. but also said, “I was close to him and didn’t smell alcohol.’”

Johnston told police, “... because of previous incidents, so I was nervous about him entering into the City Hall chamber.”

“I decided to go out (into the hall) and talk to him and say, ‘What’s going on?’ The conversation I got back was incoherent,” the report said. “It all looked beyond suspicious, but

it also looked as if there was some kind of issue happening with councilor Jordinelli.”

Johnston eventually caught up with now-Deputy Chief Matt Domenico.

“Dominico (sic) was present most of this time,” Johnston told police.

“When he was, I said, ‘There’s no protection going on here with whatever’s happening here. You act as you want.’ I didn’t want him in the chambers. The council would not want him in the chambers in case there was a previous incident that had occurred in the past.”

Johnston told Sgt. Richard Stolte about a conversation he had with former City Manager Jane Bais DiSessa and Michael Martinez, the then-acting city manager.

“The obvious thought that he was under the influence of something by me,” Johnstonsaid in the report.

“I’ll be very clear. I just never, I never smelled (alcohol). I don’t have proof of it, but I have to say the entire situation was -- what was in my mind was there was an inebriated council member there. I don’t have any proof or anything. That’s the way it looked and felt. But I don’t have the ability to say if there was anything like that.”

Council appointed a special prosecutor, Geoff Wilson, to determine whether Jordinelli violated any municipal laws or ethical standards “such that prosecution is warranted.”

Local media said Jordinelli

blamed the incident on a medical issue. Police reports indicate Jordinelli was released on a summons. In 2020, the council censured Jordinelli for comments he made about his experience growing up on a farm and witnessing animals eating each other. Reporter Ryan Dunn said, “The rant was largely incoherent and off-topic, .and Jordinelli admitted to drinking ‘a couple of beers’ prior to the meeting.”

The censure resolution stated that the “council finds the conduct, condition and actions of councilmember Jordinelli .. to be inconsistent with the values and ideals of the Brighton city council or the city of Brighton.”

Jordinelli apologized to the council after the censure vote. He called his actions “foolish.”

“The last thing I want to make this council look is foolish,” said Jordinelli in September 2020. “This council is awesome. a group of great people — intelligent. So, I thank everyone for your support, and I will make you proud, as I have in the past.”

According to records from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Centennial police arrested Jordinelli in 2009 for misdemeanor DUI. Arapahoe County sheriff’s deputies arrested Jordinelli five months later for the same offense.

In 2016, Jordinelli appeared in Brighton Municipal Court to answer a charge of obstruction and interference with a public official.

VFW Thanksgiving program a labor of love 1,000 meals delivered during Thanksgiving

It takes a lot of effort and a lot of love to put together Thanksgiving meals for those in need, but it’s something Bob Grant has had a hand in doing since 1978.

His work began started in 1978 at the VFW Hall in Brighton, with Grant helping to organize the annual Thanksgiving meal giveaway.

This year, volunteers delivered more than 1,000 free Thanksgiving meals to the area’s needy.

“They do this every year on Thanksgiving since 1978 then it was moved to the Elks Club in 2015,” Grant said.

And it’s grown. When the program started in 1978 at the VFW it served from 50 to 100 Thanksgiving dinners to disabled vets and expanded. Since then for the last four or five years, they have been giving out about 1,000 Thanksgiving dinners.

Grant served in the army in Vietnam so when he came home, a veteran services officer with Adams County told Grant about the program and asked him if he was interested in helping.

Bodie Stockton also came out on Thanksgiving Day to help hand out food.

The preparation starts in October, with volunteers gathering turkeys and donations ahead of time.

With over 200 volunteers cooking on Monday and finishing up on Wednesday the day before the traditional Thursday holiday, the plates were put together with both a hot and cold meal. Then on Thanksgiving Day, the meals are ready to go out the door.

“We had over 45 drivers volunteer to drive the meals to its location.

The last couple of years before the pandemic people would come in and pick up a meal and go back to their cars, “ said Grant. “But with the pandemic, we had cars lined up on Second Avenue around the Elks club and we brought the meals to the people. It’s a joint operation between the Kiwanis Club, Almost

Home, and the food pantries.”

These organizations also help with Thanksgiving dinners in the 27J school district. The teachers give them a list of families and Grant coordinates with the families to deliver the Thanksgiving dinner.

When Grant is not serving those in need he volunteers his time with the Kiwanis Club doing a lot of public service work for the people and also works with CASA, Adams County’s Court Appointed Special Advocates.

“I do it because there are people need in our wonderful community – to come together in those kinds of circumstances – it’s just a labor of love,” said Grant.

Northglenn considers old Rec Center for homeless

Northglenn could use its old Recreation Center on Community Center Drive to house the homeless this winter, pending a City Council vote.

Northglenn City Council was scheduled to consider a resolution to use the old recreation center as winter housing at the Dec. 6 meeting.

If approved, the program would run through March 2022 and house 25 people who are experiencing homelessness and would be open overnight, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. The program would be operated by Denver Rescue Mission and funded by Adams County. The exact start date depends on the council’s decision and how fast the Denver Rescue Mission can staff the program.

In Adams County, homelessness increased between 40 and 45 percent since the COVID pandemic. As well, no emergency shelter currently exists to connect people experiencing homelessness during cold nights.

The closest one rests 20 miles outside of Northglenn.

For those needing housing, they must be referred by a Northglenn Crisis Response Unit, Adams County Street Outreach Team or the Northglenn Police Department.

Participants must be 18 years or older, have employment or a community connection. Connections can include attending day school, a day center, or staying with friends or family. Families with children will be referred to Adams 12 Five Star schools which can provide resources through a federal act.

The program aims to serve those left out by the Severe Weather Action Plan, a county program adopted in 2020 to help people experiencing unsheltered homelessness. The intake hours for the SWAP are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those experiencing homelessness come to the program in the morning and room distribution occurs around 1 p.m. Since working folks miss these intake hours, the new program will accommodate those folks.

Male and females will be separated and each bed will be spaced six feet apart for COVID safety.

The staff remains confident in making long-term connections for these folks, which can include transitional housing, longer-term housing,

using housing vouchers or identifying appropriate low-income housing, before the program ends.

The program only exists for four months because the building will be unusable after March 2022. The Civic Center Master Plan, which will redevelop the current Civic Center Campus, includes the old recreation center.

Northglenn opened its new rec center in October, leaving the old building vacant.

Costs and safety During an informational meeting Dec. 1 with residents and neighbors at the old rec center, one community member voiced concerns over the cost of the program noting that it would cost the city $231,000 over 120 nights — $1,900 per night and about $77 per person helped. She asked if costs could be brought down or the program could provide more services.

Josh Geppalt, Vice President of Operations for the Denver Rescue Mission, said the cost remains high because of economies of scale; the mission usually runs programs with more people and two staff members are needed.

Shane Doss, the general manager at the Delta Hotel in Northglenn, voiced concerns about the safety of his guests.

“Those residents are already here,” she said. “Making a program that actually works on helping them, serving people that need resources is hopefully going to also decrease stress on businesses in the area.”

BRIEFS Brighton woman to be sentenced for crash that killed her son The woman accused of vehicular homicide and reckless driving in a crash that killed her son entered a request to plead guilty, according to the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Sentencing for Brighton resident Karena Cecil is set for 8:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28. She made her request for the guilty plea Nov. 22.

Cecil was driving along Interstate 76 east of Brighton Memorial Day weekend when her car went out of control and rolled over. Her young son died in the crash.

Man arrested in death of girlfriend An Adams County man faces firstdegree murder charges after a shooting incident east of Brighton.

It happened around 1:30 a.m. Nov. 27 in the 12800 block of Picadilly Road. Deputies arrested 33-year-old Jeffrey Aschenbrenner. He faces a total of four charges, including attempted first-degree murder and possession of a weapon by a previous offender, all felonies. His next court appearance is at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27.

Adams County sheriff’s deputies responded to the area on a report of a woman who’d been shot. Authorities found her and her father in the front seat of a car. She was alive, according to a Facebook post from the sheriff’s office. She died after going to a local hospital for treatment.

Water payment assistance Brighton residents who need help in paying their water billss can apply for the new Low Income Household Water Assistance Program, a federal program through the Colorado Department of Human Services.

Requirements include a completed LEAP application, a copy of a water bill and directly paying a water provider for either drinking water and/ or sewer and waste water.

To apply for LEAP and LIHWAP go to colorado.gov/PEAK. Call 1-866-HEAT-HELP (1-866-432-8435).

There are no minimum or maximum benefits for LIHWAP. This program is first-come, first-serve. Deadline is ongoing until LIHWAP funds run out.

Toys for Tots Phil Doerner, a local Edward Jones financial advisor, is supporting the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program by using his office as a dropoff location for this year’s toy drive, according to a press statement.

Local residents may help needy children in the area by bringing in a new, unwrapped toy to the office, 725 E Bridge St, Suite A, during regular business hours through Dec. 10. Monetary gifts cannot be accepted.

“With the holiday season around the corner, we are all getting ready for the festivities,” Doerner said.

“And as this is the season of giving, now is a great time to remember the less fortunate in our community.”

End of year concert series The Armory will ring out the year with a concert series at 300 Strong St. The Long Run, a group of Colorado musicians dedicated to music by the Eagles, perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11. The group has performed at the Paramount Theatre in Denver and Red Rocks Amphitheater.

Brass Attack and Hazel Miller perform at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17. The

Brass Attack is a nine-piece funk, rhythm and blues and pop cover band in Denver. The group features a horn section, vocalists and keyboards.

Hazel Miller and The Collective perform American blues, pop and gospel music. She’s won sesveral awards and tours internationally.

“We are looking forward to bringing back and hosting the IMAGE Summit next year,” said Tawnya Russell, manager of youth services.

“But in the meantime, we’re so happy to offer this new series of interactive workshops that’ll help our future leaders.”

Temporary road closure Weld County Road 2 will be closed between North 60th Avenue and King Street continuing through Jan. 17.

Crews will demoilish and reconstruct the bridge over the Speer Canal. The detour is through neighborhood streets.

ONGOING Tree program Trees are available for purchase through the city of Brighton’s 2022 Tree program at brightontreeprogram.com. The idea is to encourage tree planting, species diversity and water conservation within the city, according to a statement.

Thirteen species are available through the program: American Linden, Chinkapin Oak, Cleveland Pear, Osage Orange, Thornless Hawthorn, Ohio Buckeye, Box Elder Maple, Discovery Elm, English Oak, Bur Oak, Hackberry, Northern Catalpa and Hotwings Maple. Each tree costs $75 (maximum of two trees per household).

This program is for Brighton residents only. Ordering is available until all trees are sold out. Trees will arrive in the spring. Participants are responsible for maintenance.

Purchased trees have to be planted within the city limits.

‘Hearts in the Arts’ rental assistance program begins The Brighton Urban Renewal Authority began the Brighton Hearts in the Arts rental assistance program.

It’s designed to help local artists who occupy physical space in the downtown urban renewal area with rent costs.

It’s open to arts-focused nonprofits, according to a statement, plus forprofit art galleries and art studios.

Some of the ‘Need-to-meet” criteria include a 501(c)(3) designation and to be sure that the function and mission of the facility is to exhibit, create, present and/or sell artwork in several forms of media.
