Jacquelyn “Jackie” Mae Detwiler of Fort Lupton passed away peacefully at her son’s home October 23rd. Jackie was born in Denver on March 15, 1956, to John and Shirley Heartso. She married and was blessed with three children: Nathan, Kourtney and Taryn. Jackie’s hobbies included fast cars, camping, fishing, boating and golfing. She excelled at it all! Jackie worked at Purifoy Chevrolet in Fort Lupton for 36 years. Her greatest passion in life was her

Jackie is survived by her mom, Shirley Heartso, son Nathan (Victoria) Detwiler, daughters Kourtney (Dorian) Harris and Taryn Detwiler and stepson Matt (Lori) Detwiler. She was blessed with twelve grandchildren: Laneya, Jayden, Amya, Neamiyah, Brecken, Logan, Kelsey, Katelyn, Kassidy, Lucas, Dylan and Jessica. She also left behind a sister Sherry (Don) Parker and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of life was held on Saturday October 23rd.

Mitchell was born in 2006 and adopted by Rachel. He was well known for his tender heart and deep love for his family, as well as being a remarkably big cat who would happily fill your arms or lap for hours. He was a connoisseur of treats feline and human. He is painfully missed by his mom
Rachel, dad Jeremy, and sister Sheila. He died unexpectedly, less than a month after his brother Herbie. He was especially sensitive to others’ feelings and made it his business to spend time with those who needed attention. He was a gentle, beautiful soul and life is not as good without him here.

Weld veterans had a big year

Wendy Nally said her job, helping Weld County veterans and their families find help, makes her happy. “I feel wonderful and so grateful to be able to help our Weld County Veterans acquire those VA Benefits that they are truly entitled to. I also enjoy assisting spouses of deceased veterans to apply for those VA Pension Benefits they may be eligible for as well. It is an amazing feeling
to assist a veteran or spouse in being awarded benefits that will make their lives much easier, “ said Nally. More than 17,000 veterans have been helped in 2020 by Nally and Nickie Phillips, two veteran services officers with Weld County Department of Veteran Services. While the 2021 figures are not available yet, in 2020 Weld County veterans received about $156 million in funding from the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) and an increase of $18 million from 2019, according to the National Center of Veteran Analysis and Statistics. The Veteran Services department received over 4,636 phone calls, and about 1,085 veterans visited in
person this year so far, according to Veterans Services. Even though the VA makes all the final decisions with benefits Nally and Phillips reduce the stress and frustration for families and veterans who need help navigating its complex systems. In the Veteran Service department, Nally and Phillips’s job are to help veterans with the application process of VA health benefits, education, disability care, and benefits as well as helping the families with benefits, burial assistance such as location, headstones, and makers. Also, they follow up with the claims to keep families informed of its status. Nally served as a non-commission
sergeant in the U.S. Air Force from 1986 to 1990. She was stationed at Kaden Airforce Base in Okinawa Japan then transferred to FE Warren AFB in Cheyenne, Wyoming working in personnel that was the single Classification and Retraining office in Wyoming. She joined the military because her cousin was a Seabee in the Navy and at the time Nally was not interested in college so she signed up for the Air Force Academy. “The Air Force was amazing for me. I was able to travel and see other countries, including South Korea as well as Okinawa. I grew up a lot during those four years and rather wished I would have stayed in,” said Nally.

just like you, addicts and alcoholics,” Wade said. “And everyone is feeling sorry for themselves, but they say ‘Hey, I have a bottle.’ And that’s what you do.” The Brighton chapter will be open throughout Thanksgiving, continuously Nov. 24 and Nov. 25, with hourly meetings and fellowship, offering an alternative to that bottle. It’s called an Alcathon, and Wade said he’s seen it done in other cities. This is the first year that Brighton has hosted one. “The deal is that people need to have a place to come, a safe place to come and a place with meetings,” Wade said. “The excuse is, ‘I couldn’t find a meeting that was open. I just couldn’t find one.’ Well, we’re open from Wednesday night prior to Thanksgiving and it’ll end at midnight on Thanksgiving. You’ll be able to find a meeting.” Wade said they’ll plan to have meetings every hour, as well as a potluck supper, games to play and opportunities to just sit and talk. Tradition The chapter has been the same location for 45 years, Wade said, at 147 S. 2nd Place in downtown Brighton. The chapter’s website, www.brighton1aa.org, has become increasingly more important since COVID. Members added a camera and screen to the meeting space during the COVID lockdowns, allowing them to continue to offer

But these Alcothons, we have a meeting every hour on the hour. And we’ll take it a step further. If they need a meeting, we’ll have a meeting. There will be food, and we’ll have music if they want to listen to music and play games if that’s what they want. Whoever comes, we want to give them a place.” He doesn’t expect people will stay there the whole time. “Then there’s the situation where you’re at your brother’s house and everyone is drinking,” he said. “If your sobriety is strong, it may not matter. But if your sobriety is weak, it really matters. This gives you an opportunity to break away for a little while and just get some peace.”
Thanksgiving has always been a tradition at the Brighton branch, he said. “We’ve always had the Thanksgiving potluck up here,” Wade said. “Last year was the first time ever we missed it. We’ve had a Thanksgiving meeting with people bringing in food and sides and, as soon as the meeting is over, it’s game on. It’s food to no end.” He doesn’t expect that to change, although the holiday will be a bit more formal. At least two members of the chapter, a man and a woman, will be on hand at all times. “In AA, men work with men and women work with women,” Wade said. “So if a woman hears about this and comes in, she can feel comfortable because there will be at least one other woman there.” They’ll be prepared the listen, to advise and to counsel — if that’s what’s needed. The chapter’s Thanksgiving meal will be served right after the noon meeting, he said. “This place will be packed,” he said. “Not only will there be members, there will be their kids and family. And anyone who comes, there will be food for them.” If it’s a success, they plan to have more Alcathon’s over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. “If you come to a meeting, it’s the people in the room and how welcoming they are that’s going to get you to come back,” he said. “You have to start a new way of life and they can tell you how they did it, it’s better if you feel welcome.”
