Fort Lupton teacher honored Mendoza is the only teacher to be awarded in the entire state

Fort Lupton High School teacher Christina Mendoza received the 2021 state award for Teacher of the Year in English Language Development by the Colorado Association for Bilingual Education (CO- CABE), according to a press release.

“It is an amazing award for Christina and well deserved. I have known her for 10 -years back in another district we both worked in.

She was a part of the Instructional Leadership Team with me, due to her relationships with peers, as well as those she builds with students. It is a huge honor for her personally and professionally and certainly for Weld Re-8 to be a part of her journey, “ said Alan Kaylor, Weld Re-8 superintendent.

“I am so grateful to have even been considered for this award, let alone to win! It’s very humbling being recognized by CABE, they are an organization that is highly respected throughout the state. I could not have become the teacher that I am without my students. This is my 19th year of teaching, and I am so lucky to have had amazing students in Arizona, as well as in several districts in Colorado,” said Mendoza.

CO-CABE is the only statewide organization that advocates education policy and programs that support bilingual students and families.

“Since 1984, we have been working with the community and recognizing top educators and advocates across the state. Mendoza was born in Southern Colorado and raised in Colorado Springs. She received her undergrad from the Chadron State College in Nebraska and received a master’s from Colorado University-Boulder.

Her son a junior, daughter, and stepdaughter are freshmen at Riverdale Ridge High School.

Teaching was not Mendoza’s first choice of a career, but later she found out it was what she was supposed to do in life.

“As strange as it sounds, I never wanted to become a teacher. My mom was a teacher until she retired in May of this year, and I always told her I didn’t know how she could deal with kids all day, “ said Mendoza.

to a small town in Arizona. The superintendent learned she had a degree and also played basketball in college. So, he asked Mendoza if she would be interested in teaching Physical Education (PE) for kindergarteners to eighth-graders.

From that day on she loved teaching especially with middle school students, she went back to college to receive her teaching license.

“That first year I started teaching a science class as well as PE and ended up teaching middle school for 13 years. It’s my 6th year at the high school level. I love teaching high school, and I am fortunate to be a part of the Ft. Lupton community. We have the best students and families here, and I am truly grateful to get to teach the students that I have,” said Mendoza.

The youths being bilingual Mendoza says has many advantages navigating the world in two different languages.

“All of my students are bicultural which allows them to be a part of the American culture and the culture of their parents and family. I’ve always made sure to tell my students how important it is to learn how to read and write in both languages-I am envious of their bilingual skills,” said Mendoza.

Mendoza’s plans for the future are to continue to teach high school or maybe a community college.

“I love learning and am a lifelong learner, so being a teacher and staying in education is a perfect fit for me,” she said.

“This award demonstrates to the public, locally and across the state, that Fort Lupton has achieved a great honor,” said Garcia.

Mark G. Larson, age 58, passed away on October 2, 2021.

He is survived by his wife, Valerie; daughters Becky (Justin) Richers, Kristina (Sean Sullivan), Bernadette (Lynden Nelson), and Mackenzie; grandchildren Brooke, Mason and Bennett Richers; parents Richard and Juanita Larson; brothers Richard (Denise), James (Melanie); sisters Teresa (Michael) Krieger, Monica (Victor) Domenico, Katey (Tim) Cassady, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He later bought a 1965 Chevy truck and painted Larson Hog Farm on the side. It was quite a truck.

Mark was an avid hunter for 50 years.

He was a true outdoorsman- hunting, fishing and trapping. He trapped muskrats and beavers on the farm and sold their pelts. He absolutely loved to hunt. He would hunt geese, ducks, dove, pheasant, turkey and deer down by the river on the farm along with antelope out on the eastern plains. He looked forward to the annual elk hunting trip in October at Trappers Lake. He would hunt with his Dad, Dick, Jim, Kyle, Harlan, Uncle Rick, Vic, Tim, cousins and friends from South Dakota, Delbert, Rodney, Judd and Larry. They had so many great times on the hunting trips taking their horses Copper and Jesse along. Mark was usually the chef when they went hunting – because he was such a good cook. They would also catch trout on the hunting trip and he would fry it up for dinner.

Mark was born on July 8, 1963 to Richard and Juanita Larson. He was the second of six children. He grew up on the family farm in Adams County. He attended Assumption Catholic School from 1st through 8th grade. He played basketball there from 3rd through 8th grade. He later went back to the school after he graduated to coach the boys basketball team for several years. He attended Holy Family High School where he continued to play basketball all four years and played on an adult basketball league with his brother-in-law Mike. His charismatic personality made him a very successful salesman. In his career he worked Mark grew up on the family farm and cut for several companies as a route salesman, acres and acres of hay, raising and selling Pepsi, Dreyer’s Ice Cream, Cold Front and pigs. He was a member of the Good Luck Farmer Brothers Coffee. He also worked for 4-H club for 10 years showing beef and pigs Brighton Co-op part-time for 20 years. earning many ribbons. He looked forward to Mark and Valerie were married for almost helping his dad and brothers harvest the corn 27 years. His four daughters were his pride every fall. and joy and he loved his three precious Mark had some memorable vehicles. His grandchildren so very much. first was a gold 1970 International truck that Mark was a great friend to everyone and was we all remember riding in. He worked for loved by so many. Patricia “Patti” Wright, age 72, passed away at The Villas at Sunny Acres nursing home in Northglenn, Colorado on October 18, 2021.

Patricia Dorayne Wright was born on May 24, 1949 in Colorado to Wayne and Doris Wright. She was raised in the Denver area with her older sister, Linda.

Patti attended Skinner Middle School and graduated North High School in 1967. Patti enjoyed participating in Girl Scouts and competing in gymnastics. She also loved the outdoors.

Patti honed her craft of cooking and baking, and making elaborately frosted birthday cakes. She had a creative flair, and a fondness for decorating and going “all out” for the holidays. Patti was very musically talented and loved playing the piano. She enjoyed her career as a piano teacher over several ALLEE

decades. Piano and music were her lifelong passions. Visits with her two grandsons were a highlight for Patti in recent years and always made her smile. She was thrilled to know that her grandsons were following in her footsteps by learning and excelling at the piano.

Patti is survived by her two children Jennifer Frickell of San Francisco, CA, and Eric (Melissa) Frickell of Brighton, CO; her two school-age grandsons; and her two nephews Robert (Lisa) Doehling of Lawrenceville, GA, and Dean Doehling of Jasper, GA. Patti was preceded in death by her parents Wayne and Doris Wright, and her sister Linda Doehling-Nelson.

Following cremation, Patti will be laid to rest next to her parents in the Arvada Cemetery in Arvada, Colorado

Robert Cecil “Bob” Allee, Jr., 86, of Cheyenne passed peacefully with his family by his side on October 19th in Cheyenne. He was born December 12, 1934 in Mancos, Colorado to Robert Cecil Allee, Sr., and Barbara Louise Bell; he was the eldest of eight children. After numerous homes, he settled in Ft. Mary Elaine was born August 1, 1923 in Rock Springs, Wyoming, to Paul and Ruth Elling. She had three brothers Bobby (deceased), Frank (deceased), and Paul (deceased), and three sisters, Faustine (deceased), step-sister Eileen (Genoa, Ohio), and halfsister Janice (deceased). Mary and John Henry Trostel III (deceased 1985) married in Brighton, Colorado, and had six children: John Henry IV (deceased), Timothy (Mary), Geraldine (deceased), Helen, Elmer (Kathy), and Teresa (Dave, deceased).

Mary has 18 grandchildren she loved: John Henry V, Lisa, Michelle, Timothy Jr., Deanna, Aric (deceased), Justin, Jennifer, Joshua, Bridget, Dorgan, Nick, Paul, Sharon Ann, Amanda, David Lee, Helen Ann, and Sara.

Mary also has 45 great-grandchildren she loved: Haden, Chance, Austin, Carly, Timothy III, Jonathan, Robert, Justin, Ashley, Madison, Daniel, Brooke, Isabelle, Jesse, Thomas, Peter, Francis, Emily, Patrick, Jennie, Branson, Gavin, Aidan, Elliot, Orin, Mary, Leo, Rueger, Aric, Eddie, Katie, Brendan, Christopher, Talon, Armani,

Giovanni, Heather, Haven, Clinton, Dalton, Cody, Ryan, Tanner, Jaxson, and Christian.

In addition, Mary has 12 great-great grandchildren that brought her joy: Kynleigh, Paxton, Addie, Aiden, Oliver, Railee, Kayson, Parker, Peyton, Connor, Savannah, and Karson.

Mary worked at a tuberculosis center after high school, after that at Samsonite Luggage, Franklin Serum Company, a funeral home, and later enjoyed a ministry for 30+ years of caring for the elderly and terminally ill. In addition, Mary also dedicated her time at St. Williams Catholic Church in Fort Lupton, Colorado. Mary had a knack for completing large puzzles and crossword puzzles, was on a bowling team, and loved playing cards.

Mary happily lived her later years with family in Texas, and passed peacefully at the age of 98 in Conroe, Texas on September 26, 2021. Memories and love of Mom, Grandma and Great-Grandma remain in our hearts forever. A funeral service will be held Saturday, November 6, 2021, at 11:00am at St. Williams Catholic Church, with celebratory reception to follow.

A program at Anythink Wright Farms hopes to demystify crime scene investigations and forensics, offering answers without making the topic creepy.

The new program “Death and Donuts” offers a chance to talk to death investigators about the process of an autopsy and how the forensic pathologist, autopsy technicians use science to find evidence and get clues to determine the cause of death.

Allie Beauchamp is United Power’s new Information Services Director. Beauchamp and her information technology team have been instrumental with protecting United Power technology infrastructure from cyberattacks, according to a company press release.

Gabriel, United Power president and chief executive officer. “Our electric system can be particularly vulnerable to cyberattacks, and Alie has positioned us well to address and mitigate those vulnerabilities to the best of our ability. She will continue to play a critical role in creating a competitive business advantage in a digital space that is growing exponentially year by year.”

Recent cyberattacks that businesses experienced in the country raised concerns for utility customers according to officials, according to the release. United Power has taken the extra steps to protect its technology infrastructure from cyberattacks. It is contributed to the work of Beauchamp and her information security team, the statement read Beauchamp worked for a rural co-op in Oregon, directing its information technology team, and joined United Power in 2017. She holds multiple certifications and more than 20 years of experience in information security. Beauchamp is committed to not only protecting United Power customers and as well as educating employees to detect cyberattacks, according to United Power officials.

The Death and Donuts educational program is the first of its kind for Anythink Libraries.

“I have personally never done a program like this. But I wanted to do this because the topic of death and dying is considered a taboo topic and nobody wants to talk about it, but everybody’s curious about it. So far 35 people have signed up,” said Miller.

The special guests are Ashley Huerta, an autopsy technician for four years, and Arely JuarezDominquez a medical-legal death investigator for two years. Both work in Arapahoe County.

“These ladies who are hosting our program are experts and are strong women of color and there is under-representation of women of racial and ethnic minorities in STEM-related fields,” said Miller.

Adams County prepares to leave Tri-County Health STAFF REPORT

The Adams County commissioners will vote to begin the process to end the county’s relationship with the Tri-County Health Department, according to a statement released Oct. 19.

According to the statement, commissioners intend to bring forward a resolution at their Oct. 26 public hearing to provide notice of Adams County’s decision to leave Tri-County Health Department.

Per its legal obligation, Adams County will remain a part of TCHD through December 2022. Starting January 2023, Adams County will have its own health department structure in place. There will be no disruption of services to Adams County residents during this transition, according to the statement.

“During this transition, the focus will always remain the health and well-being of our residents,” said Eva J. Henry, Adams County Commissioner and board chairperson.

“This new structure gives us an opportunity to focus on the specific needs of our residents and invest dollars in the areas that need it most.”

According to the statement, Adams County will work closely with partners during the next year who rely on health department services to establish needs and best practices for partnerships going forward, while focusing on positive outcomes for Adams County residents.

“Douglas County’s decisions left us no choice but to re-evaluate the future of public health services in

Adams County,” said Henry. “As a result, Adams County must determine the best option to move ahead for a health board and services provided to residents.”

Similar to the majority of counties in Colorado, Adams County will follow the common practice of providing its own health department for its residents, according to the statement.

Arapahoe County’s elected leaders released a statement in reaction to Adams County’s announcement “The Arapahoe County Board of Commissioners is saddened that our neighboring counties have chosen to end the productive 55-year partnership with the Tri-County Health Department,” according to that press release.

“Arapahoe County residents will continue to receive all existing TriCounty public health services uninterrupted during the transition,” the statement from commissioners said. It added: “The Board intends to do what it can to support the many dedicated employees of Tri-County Health throughout this process.”

The chain of events that led to counties leaving Tri-County Health began more than a year ago.

In July 2020, Douglas County commissioners announced they would eventually leave Tri-County Health, citing a wish for more local control over public health orders. Douglas’ consideration of leaving the agency came amid a rift with Tri-County Health over the agency’s coronavirus pandemic policies.

But last November, the commissioners walked the decision back

and agreed to stay with the health department until at least 2023. As part of that agreement, however, the commissioners were assured they would be able to opt out of any public health order. The Tri-County health board voted on Aug. 30 this year to no longer allow opt-outs.

Douglas commissioners formalized the decision to leave Tri-County in a meeting Sept. 7, opting to form its own health department.

In early September, Arapahoe County confirmed that Arapahoe and Adams counties had also been contemplating splitting away from Tri-County Health, among other options, driven by Douglas County’s intention to leave. An Arapahoe County spokesperson at the time said a separation by Arapahoe wouldn’t be driven by any policy disagreement with the agency.

Douglas exiting the health agency would potentially create financial

or budgetary problems for the other two counties, the spokesperson added.

Later, Douglas County reached an agreement to continue to receive all services from Tri-County Health Department until at least the end of 2022 after the two entities came to an agreement that was approved by the county commissioners during a Sept. 28 work session. Douglas will still have its own board of health in charge of things like county-wide public health orders.

The county will continue to pay its proportional share of the cost of Tri-County services, according to the agreement. In light of that agreement, it was less clear how Douglas’ exit would financially affect Arapahoe and Adams.

Some local leaders in Arapahoe County had worried that a decision of whether to break away from TriCounty Health Department would be influenced by the “politicization of public health.”

“There was this question about what is the message to our residents about the politicization of public health and the trust and responsibility in government if there’s a perception that this decision is being made because of politics around COVID? What are we saying to our residents?” said Lisa VanRaemdonck, a consultant who was gathering opinions to guide Arapahoe County’s decision of whether to form its own health department after Douglas County’s impending exit of Tri-County Health. VanRaemdonck spoke to Arapahoe’s commissioners during a Sept. 14 meeting.

Council OKs townhome village preliminary plat

Fort Lupton City Council voted 5-1 to accept a preliminary plat for the Fort Lupton Village Townhomes during its Oct. 19 meeting.

Mayor Pro Tem Shannon Rhoda cast the “no” vote.

The proposal includes 13 buildings of fourand five-plex townhouses on the corner of Weld County Road 12 and South Rollie Avenue.

Homes told council a metro district will maintain the property. Landscape coverage totals 39 percent of overall space.

“Will there be additional landscaping on the railroad track side?” asked Mayor Zo Stieber.

“There’s a buffer there for a dog park,” Cesar said. “I think Public Service owns the ground.”

“At night, when the windows are open, it gets quite loud,” Stieber said. “It’s like people who are new to the mountains and aren’t happy because the bears are there. I’m just anticipating questions about train noise.”

Rhoda has objected to townhome developments before. She voted against a preliminary

plat for the Willow Bend subdivision this spring, citing a desire for affordable housing and the desire to give citizens a chance to own the land as well as the home.

“I will not vote yes for a residential metro (district),” she said.

No one from the public testified.

Ozone worsens along Front Range; answers elusive ‘Other areas don’t violate standards like we do’

The worst ozone year in recent history on the northern Front Range boosted pollutant violations in a rolling three-year average closely watched by the EPA, state officials said Oct. 21, though they did not offer bold new programs to combat the hazardous substance.

Twelve monitoring sites on the Front Range now have a three-year average over the EPA’s most recent 70-parts-per-billion cap for ozone, and five sites violate even the EPA’s previous looser standard of 75 parts per billion, according to annual reports made Oct. 21 to the Air Quality Control Commission by state and regional pollution officials.

Widespread Western wildfires and the smoke they shed into Colorado contributed to the ozone worsening in the northern Front Range area already in non-attainment of EPA limits, the officials said.

But they also acknowledged that the hot dry summer of 2021, which will be repeated in the future as climate change affects the West, made for terrible ozone conditions — with or without the smoke.

“Other areas don’t violate the standards like we do,” said Mike Silverstein, director of the Regional Air Quality Council, which tracks pollution and recommends policy changes to help the Front Range meet EPA limits. “So that shows that local vehicle emissions are really what kicks us over the threshold of the standards, not what’s given to us from outside.”

The state Air Quality Control Division staff, which reports to the commission, confirmed that the northern Front Range is likely to be declared in “severe” violation of EPA ozone limits in early 2022, after lingering in the “serious” violation category.

Changing the classification triggers more demands on the RAQC and state officials to clamp down on vehicle emissions and volatile chemicals from oil and gas operations that contribute to ozone.

progress in other key areas of EPA concern, including nitrogen oxide and volatile organic compounds that are precursors of ozone, the presentations showed. But ozone is in violation and getting worse, with many Front Range monitors registering levels higher than 80 parts per billion over the summer.

Some AQCC commissioners pressed staff and RAQC officials making the annual reports on what new measures will be taken soon to bring ozone down.

“We must own the reality that what we’re doing is simply not enough,” Commissioner Elise Jones said after the meeting. “We are failing on air quality. It’s time for us to pursue bolder solutions than we’ve considered before — like making transit free, and not allowing oil and gas fracking during the ozone season.”

Air quality officials are scheduled to make more rules cutting emissions from oil and gas production in December, and that has proven one of the most effective strategies so far, Silverstein said.

RTD has also begun talking about seeking federal funding for free transit on ozone alert days, which would cost millions in foregone ticket revenue, he added.

Silverstein said RAQC and others will be looking at reducing vehicle miles traveled, a key measure in trying to cut ozone pollution, by working with large warehouse centers, shopping malls or other concentrat-

Front Range air pollution monitors can separate out pollution sources and identify which category is most promising for reducing ozone — travel by cars and light trucks is the top pollution contributor for almost every monitor, the Oct. 21 presentations showed.

Changing automobile use for employers or employees, though, has proven one of the most fraught avenues in metro Denver’s pollution control efforts. Air Pollution Control Division staff over the summer proposed requiring large employers to cut the number of commuting or work miles driven by staff, but

quickly withdrew the Employee Trip Reduction Program on opposition from business and industry groups.

Silverstein noted that rebates to people who replace gas-powered lawn mowing equipment with clean electric models has also helped make a dent in afternoon ozone.

Commissioner Jana Milford noted that California has just moved to end the sale of oil and gas-powered lawn equipment altogether, and wondered if Colorado should follow that lead.

Reaction from environment advocates after the meeting appeared to be, “all of the above, and more.”

V. Sean Mitchell, Colorado spokesperson for the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments, said the state’s ongoing pollution problems became more critical with COVID19, and studies showing the virus does deeper damage in areas made vulnerable by high pollution.

“The air quality this summer was atrocious,” Mitchell said, in an emailed statement. “Now is the time for Colorado to not shift the blame to other states, but again take the lead, with bold actions to provide clean, healthy air.”

Weld sheriff’s deputies recover stolen cars, tools STAFF REPORT

inventories on their vehicles, they noticed the cars were full of tools and other items that didn’t belong to them.

“To date, investigators have connected recovered property to more than a dozen active criminal cases,” Moylan said. The affected jurisdictions include the Estes Park, Westminster, Firestone and Longmont police departments and the Weld County Sheriff’s Office.

“Property has also been connected to two active Denver Police Department cases, including an investigation into 11 vehicles stolen from Denver International Airport,” Moylan said.

marked with the owners’ initials.

Moylan said that may be helpful if a co-worker or someone on a job site finds missing items. He suggested several things: 1) Take an inventory of tour tools, including serial numbers of highticket items; 2) Mark tools with your name, phone number and company logo; 3) Do not leave tools in the open at the job site or in the bed of a pick-up truck; and 4) Securely store tools, whether it’s in a storage container on-site or bring tools into a garage at the end of the workday.

GREELEY – A Weld County Sheriff’s Office strike team investigation recovered eight stolen vehicles and some $140,000 worth of stolen tools from throughout metro Denver, according to a press release.

Deputies arrested two people. Jose Martinez-Gallegos, 26, was in the Weld County Jail on a $63,000 bond related to three unrelated cases.

Charges in this recent investigation are pending. Sheriff’s office spokesman Joe Moylan said Gallegos’ case likely will be referred to other jurisdictions for potential charges.

A Fort Lupton woman, 23-yearold Graciela Mosqueda, was in the

Adams County Jail for unrelated charges. Additional charges are pending, Moylan said.

Moylan also noted that the strike team searches for fugitives and conducts investigations into crime rings.

The strike team investigation started Sept. 1 when deputies responded to a storage business near Longmont for a follow-up case involving Martinez-Gallegos. Moylan said deputies found two suspicious vehicles parked near a storage unit.

Martinez-Gallegos and Mosqueda rented the unit.

Colo. hospital ICUs fill up amid COVID surge Polis: ‘Get protected. Get vaccinated.

Gov. Jared Polis issued his most urgent plea in months Oct. 21, asking Coloradans to get vaccinated against coronavirus in order to break a continued surge in hospitalizations that left the state with only 120 available intensive care beds.

Looking into the camera that was live streaming his news conference, Polis spoke directly to unvaccinated Coloradans, saying: “We want you here. We want you to be healthy.

Please get vaccinated.”

As of Oct. 21, more than 1,100 people were hospitalized in Colorado with confirmed cases of COVID-19, the highest number since last December. What is different this time, though, is the state has largely reopened, meaning hospitals are also filling up with victims of car accidents and other day-to-day events.

During normal times, the state’s intensive care units would operate at about 68% full, said Scott Bookman, the state health department’s COVID-19 incident commander.

Now, though, Colorado’s hospital ICUs are operating at around 90% of capacity, running the risk that they could be overwhelmed if the surge of coronavirus cases continues.

Bookman said hospitals are postponing necessary but non-emergent surgeries — preserving capacity but delaying valuable medical care to

patients who need it. Polis said the state is ready to implement crisis standards of care plans if needed, a move that would authorize hospitals to prioritize who receives treatment when their capacity is overrun.

“We are nearing the capacity of our hospitals,” Polis said.

Bookman echoed that concern, saying, “The trajectory of hospitalizations continues to go up, making me even more concerned about what this is going to do to the capacity of our hospitals to be able to take care of patients.”

About 79% of those currently hospitalized with COVID-19 are unvaccinated, according to data from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. And those who are hospitalized and unvaccinated also skew younger. The average age of an unvaccinated person who is hospitalized in Colorado right now is 57, compared with an average age of 73 for the vaccinated.

In addition to urging unvaccinated people to get the shot, Polis also said older Coloradans should receive a booster shot. He cited newly released data from vaccine maker Pfizer showing that a booster shot of its vaccine was more than 95% effective at preventing symptomatic cases of COVID-19.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Oct. 20 approved booster shots for people who received the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines, to go along with a previous approval of boosters for Pfizer recipients. At press time, an expert panel at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still needed to give its OK. Pfizer booster shots have been

authorized for all people ages 65 or older, along with people who have high-risk medical conditions or who work in high-risk settings. The Moderna approval is expected to follow similar guidelines.

Boosters for Johnson & Johnson are expected to be available for all people who received the vaccine.

People with weakened immune systems are already eligible for a booster shot regardless of which vaccine they received.

The rising levels of concern in Colorado stand in contrast to what is happening in the nation at large.

Across the United States, coronavirus cases and hospitalizations are falling.

During the previous several months, while the virus’ delta variant tore through health care systems around the country, Colorado had managed to have some of the lowest hospitalization and case rates in the country. Now, Colorado

has the 10th-highest infection rate and 20th-highest hospitalization rate among all states, according to The New York Times’ case tracker.

Since the beginning of October, about 20 people a day in Colorado have died with COVID-19. As recently as this summer, that number was around four or five people a day.

More than 8,000 people in Colorado have now died due to the coronavirus.

The Oct. 21 news conference was notable for the language Polis used in hoping to prevent more deaths.

Repeatedly, he urged unvaccinated people to show care for themselves by getting the shot. Slightly less than 30% of Coloradans who are old enough to get vaccinated are not fully immunized.

“Never in my wildest imagination did I think there would be Coloradans that didn’t want to protect themselves,” Polis said, recalling the day the first vaccine doses arrived in the state.

He later added: “Show that you love yourself. Show that you support your friends and family that want you to be here for many years to come. Get protected. Get vaccinated.

Get boosted.”

Entries wanted for Festival of Lights Parade The city of Brighton is accepting entries for its 26th annual Festival of Lights Parade in downtown Brighton.

The event is set for a 5 p.m. start Saturday, Dec. 11. Entry categories include equine/livestock, floats, motorized vehicles, musical acts

and bicycles. In years past, the parade featured more than 75 fully-lit entries and highlighted the “Hometown Holiday Tradition” theme, according to a city statement. ONGOING North Outfall Project The city of Brighton said major work is in store for the North Outfall Project.

Construction will cut Bridge Street to one lane of traffic in both directions from Fifth to Eighth Avenues. The restriction is in place 24 hours a day through Friday, Nov. 5.

Message boards will be in place, as will traffic control devices. City officials said the best alternate roads are Bromley Lane or Basesline Road. The city also said this will be the project’s last major traffic impact. Call Scott Olsen at 303-655-2136 or eamil solsen@brightonco.gov.

Walk with a doc Platte Valley Medical Center’s cardiac rehab team and Walk With A Doc will host monthly walks with Dr. Christopher Cannon, an interventional cardiologist at Brighton Heart and Vascular Institute.

This is a walking program for everyone interested in taking steps for a healthier lifestyle. After a few minutes to learn about a current health topic from the doctor, spend the rest of the hour enjoying a healthy walk and a fun conversation. It’s a great way to get out, get active and enjoy all the benefits that come from walking.

50/50 sidewalk, curb, gutter program The city of Brighton offered a new online form for its 50/50 Sidewalk, Curb and Gutter program. It helps reduce the financial cost of replacement and maintenance.

The website is brightonco. gov/5050. Residents can apply for the program, including what’s needed for the repairs and photo uploads.

Thornton holds Trunk or Treat
