The crowd in attendance at Prairie View High School’s football field Oct. 8 remembered a man who had an infectious smile, a wicked sense of humor and one who was a father to the fatherless. And a brother to his two sisters. “He tried karate on anyone who was willing to stand up to the challenge,” said Traci Latson. “He did the things only big brothers can do .. like throwing his sisters’ Barbies on the roof.” The object of the testimonials was Nate Howard, a former Prairie View coach and teacher, who died last month just short of his 59th birthday. “Dr. Howard had a gift to be able to talk to anybody,” said PVHS softball and baseball coach Mark Gonzales. The two shared an office at the school. “If you were thinking about leaving somebody, about to do something, he had the perfect words to say. Not many can do that and be so genuine.” Several of Howard’s former students, both during a stint as a coach, teacher and administrator at Manual High School and during his time at PVHS, were in attendance. “He was a mentor to me,” Gonzales said. “He had an impact on everyone he met in the hall and with that characteristic smile.” Latson recapped some of Howard’s accomplishments before he arrived at Prairie View. She said the on-field accomplishments were one thing .. but not the only thing that mattered. “His focus was on the successful young men he coached,” she said. “He joined Lincoln Hills Cares Foundation to provide opportunities for diversity and inclusion

for environmental occupations.” Howard earned a master’s degree in plant ecology and botany from the University of Colorado-Boulder in 1996. Latson also talked about his brother’s ability to form relationships. “It wouldn’t be Dr. Howard unless he was talking to somebody about something, and he did it with love,” Latson said. “He created unique relationships with people, and he always expected their best. He never said ‘no’ to making people around him better. “He brought his love of the outdoors to inner-city youth,” Latson added. “His legacy is one of education mentorship and love. Everything he did was with the

Denice Buck (Verda Denice Buck) December 14, 1935 - September 20, 2021
Denice Buck, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away Monday, September 20, 2021. She was 85. Denice will be remembered by her family and friends for her independent, active, participative spirit. Denice grew up among the rolling hills of Adair County, Iowa. Born in 1935 to Wayne and Grace Rochholz, she learned the importance of family and hard work on the family farm. While in high school at Oaks Park Academy, Denice met her future husband Harold Buck and the sweethearts married in 1954. The couple moved to Colorado when Harold began his career in healthcare at Denver’s Porter Hospital and then moved to Brighton in 1978 when Mr. Buck began his 17-year service as the President & CEO of Platte Valley Medical Center. Over her lifetime, Denice contributed to numerous communities in the Denver and Brighton area. In her thirties, and as a mother of three children, she worked as an administrative assistant for the School of Nursing at Porter Hospital, and after moving to Brighton served many years as administrative assistant at Brighton’s Zion Lutheran Church. She and her husband Harold were active members of the Brighton Seventh-Day Adventist Church and in their retirement contributed countless hours serving on church committees, facilitating social functions, and supporting teachers

and students at Brighton Adventist Academy. Denice treasured her family and friends. When her children were young, the family regularly spent time together in the Rockies at their small mountain home near Fairplay snowmobiling, four-wheeling, and enjoying the golden glow of aspen trees in the fall. In the second half of her life, Denice was a proud grandmother who cherished being in the presence of her four grandchildren. Denice also deeply valued her circle of friends, many of whom she’d know for decades and who frequently lunched together. Denice loved the natural world. She delighted in birds and birdsong, growing peas in her garden, and the beauty of roses which grew in her backyard. She savored warm Colorado sunshine and sunsets and the pleasure of eating and talking on her back porch. Denice is survived by her children Craig Buck, Mike Buck, and Cheri Buck-Perry, and her grandchildren Ashley Buck, Ross Buck, Annie Buck, and Nikolai Perepelitza. A memorial to celebrate Denice’s life will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at 3:00 pm in the Brighton Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

Mildred “Millie” Edna Thaden May 26, 1928 - October 6, 2021
Millie was born in Platteville, Colorado on May 26, 1928, the third of seven children to John Jr. and Catherine (Geringer) Zeiler. Millie’s family later moved to Brighton, Colorado where she attended Zion Lutheran School and Brighton High School.

Millie met Fred (Harley) Thaden at a café in Brighton during a snowstorm. They were married on May 4, 1947 at Zion Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with four sons, Gary, John, David, and Doug. Millie held various jobs including waitress, secretary at a bank, and grocery clerk at Friedman’s Market. But the job she enjoyed the most was preparing income taxes for H&R Block. She held this job for 65 years! She had just retired from H&R Block at the end of tax season 2020 at the age of 92. Family was extremely important to Millie. She was there for all her family in times of need, caring for ill family members, including her grandmother, mother, and husband. She loved her family and enjoyed all the teasing times with her sons and grandchildren. She loved the multitude of friends she made all through her life. She truly enjoyed baking German bread and

Zachary Scott Canaday
August 27, 1999 - September 25, 2021
Zachary Scott Canaday was born on August 27, 1999 in Denver, Colorado. He grew up in Brighton, Colorado, and attended Zion Lutheran School from preschool through 8th grade. He attended Holy Family High School in Broomfield, Colorado and graduated in 2017. At Holy Family, he was on the golf team and was a member of the National Honor Society. As a senior at Holy Family, Zach was voted by the student body as the Homecoming King. After high school, Zach attended the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado, and graduated in 2021 with high honors with a Bachelor’s Degree in Geology and a minor in Geography. While at UNC, Zach was a member of and secretary for the Geology Club and was a member of Challenge UNC, a Christian ministry. To complete his degree, Zach interned with the wonderful staff at High Plains Engineering in Hudson, Colorado. Zach was an avid coin collector, a Star Wars aficionado, and a Lego lover – he always said his dream job was to be a Lego engineer. He grew up enjoying golfing and snowboarding and continued enjoying that even while undergoing cancer treatment. He volunteered his time for several organizations that aimed to raise funds to help find cures for children’s cancer – he shaved his head for St. Baldrick’s ten years in a row and was knighted into the Round Table. In 2014, Zach and his family were introduced to the Jessie Rees Foundation, an organization with the mission to encourage kids fighting cancer to Never Ever Give Up (NEGU); Zach and
his family enjoyed volunteering by stuffing Joy Jars on every trip they took to California. As one of Zach’s past teachers stated, “If you wanted to meet the power of grace in the midst of great suffering, all you had to do was be around Zach for a few minutes. His faith in God, his kindness, strength, and smile were more powerful than any cancer. He taught me more than I ever was able to teach him and I know that he will continue to do as much good from Heaven as he did on earth.” Zach was originally diagnosed with medulloblastoma cancer in 2008 and after several relapses and trials, passed away on September 25, 2021. Zach is survived by his parents and sister, Tim, Catherine, and Olivia Canaday; grandparents, Frank and Jane Canaday, Mickey and Lora Finnerty, Nick Giancamilli and Anne Sullivan; aunts and uncles, Tracey and Kristy Canaday and Michelle Giancamilli and Gendo Sebben; and other extended family members. Funeral services will be on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at 11 a.m. at Harvest Fellowship, 11401 East 160th Avenue, Brighton Colorado, 80602. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Zach’s name to either Make-AWish Colorado (wish.org), the Jessie Rees Foundation (negu.org), or the Morgan Adams Foundation (morganadamsfoundation.org). Rocky Mountain Arsenal Five-Year Review Report Final and Available to the Public

The U.S. Army recently completed its latest Five-Year Review (FYR) report for the Rocky Mountain Arsenal (RMA), which covers the period of 2015-2020. The FYR process includes a statutory and policy review of the RMA’s 1995 and 1996 On-Post and Off-Post Records of Decision (RODs). The RODs provide detailed descriptions of the environmental cleanup approach selected for the site. The U.S. Army established the RMA in 1942 to produce chemical weapons as a deterrent in World War II. Shell Oil Co. later leased some of those facilities to manufacture agricultural products. Common disposal practices of the time resulted in contamination of the site's soils, structures and groundwater. Contaminants included solvents, metals, pesticides and miscellaneous industrial chemicals. The purpose of the FYR is to determine whether the RMA's cleanup remains protective of human health and the environment. A critical part of the FYR is to update any changes to environmental standards and to determine if the remedy outlined in the RODs and subsequent Decision Documents remains protective in light of those new standards. Based on a review of documentation, site inspections and interviews for this FYR cycle, the U.S. Army has determined that the cleanup remains protective of human health and the environment. The EPA concurs with the U.S. Army’s findings. Six issues and recommended actions have been identified to be addressed over the next five-year period to ensure the long-term protectiveness of the environmental cleanup. FYRs at the RMA will be required for the foreseeable future, since the cleanup approach included landfills and consolidation areas which hold contaminated waste from the RMA's cleanup. The next FYR is scheduled to begin in 2025 and be finalized in 2026. The 2020 FYR final report, along with the protectiveness determinations of the U.S. Army and EPA, is now posted on the RMA’s website at www.rma.army.mil. The document is also available for public review by appointment at: RMA Joint Administrative Records and Document Facility, Rocky Mountain Arsenal, 6550 Gateway Road, Commerce City, CO 80022.

Acting as the city’s liquor licensing authority, Fort Lupton City Council approved a recommendation to allow a local bar to keep its liquor license. The authority voted 6-0 with one abstention (Councilman Tommy Holton) to allow the Silver Moon Bar to keep its license as long as it meets five criteria. City Attorney Andy Ausmus outlined the guidelines, most of which came from a letter of concerns from the state. Those included the display of the liquor license in the business, the availability of sandwiches and so-called “finger food” during regular business hours and making inspections and invoices available to city and state inspectors. “My experience with these liquor license matters is to work with the licensee,” Ausmus told the authority. “You have in your packet the letter from the state on June 28 stating that corrections needed to be made.” The fifth stipulation -- that the bar stay in compliance with state and local liquor regulations -- came from the Fort Lupton Police Department.
