Sixty years in the making for a new fire house Twelve new firefighters hired

The Fort Lupton Fire Protection District had its grand opening for its new fire station Aug. 28 celebration Saturday, August 28th at 2470 S. Rollie Ave. “This is a vision going back 50 to 60 years of making this happen and keeping that rich tradition,” said Chief Phil Tiffany.

Tiffany added a quote from Ron Cerretto a former volunteer firefighter for 27 years who passed away in May. Cerretto said, “What you need for a successful community, good fire department, police department, a good school system. We’re trying to own our part in making this a great fire department so that we can serve our community be well prepared, and well ahead of the growth curves.”

“There was only a volunteer department in Fort Lupton and I was related to a lot of the members and so I spent a lot of time at the fire hall,” said Mayor Zo Stieber. “This is a dream come true. Phil was right when he said this is a project that has been 50 years in the making.

That’s wonderful.”

The new firehouse is about 13,700 square feet in size with four firefighters in house 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“So, we’ll have three stations that will have a total of 12 people on duty at any given time. It’s beautiful. We can’t thank the community enough and our board,” said Tiffany.

Funding for the new stationm came from the state Department of Local Affairs and also an Energy and Mineral Impact Grant.

Chris LaMay, the regional manager for the Colorado Department of Local Affairs, said, “It’s great to see the money’s being used wisely, efficiently on various projects. And it’s great to have partnerships.”

“Thank you to our community, above all. You guys have been there, supported us and helped us when we needed additional funding. You’ve always been there for us in rural and the city of Fort Lupton,” said Tiffany.

Eunice Loreen Wegner Sanow Zander

December 10, 1935 ~ April 13, 2020 Norman Earl Pawlowski was born in Alpena, South Dakota, December 10, 1935.

After more than 21 months of (Long Term Care) he passed away April, 13, 2020. He was born the 7th child “the baby” of George and Anna (Daleske) Pawlowski. His love of sports and hunting filled his life at a young age. Although he accidentally shot his own big toe at age 10, this didn’t impede his love for hunting geese, pheasants, ducks and rabbits.

His athletic prowess developed as he practiced basketball on packed dirt, shooting at a hoop that was made from a bushel basket nailed to a wooden pole.

He still holds scoring records in basketball at Alpena High School. At the age of 17, he received a basketball scholarship to General Beadle State Teachers College (now Dakota State University). However, upon his arrival at school, he was informed that he would not be able to play basketball as a Freshman, unless he suited up for the football team. He reluctantly headed for the first practice and was confused and a bit skeptical of the pads as football was not played at Alpena HS. He also did not care for being hit and soon left school to enlist in the Marines.

Following his service in the Marine Corp, he traveled to Denver to visit his older brother George, who was rehabbing at Fitzsimmons Hospital after losing a lung to tuberculosis, which he contracted during World War II. Norm decided to use the GI Bill to enroll at Colorado State University. He majored in Biology and Physical Education. While attending CSU, he also served as Assistant Head Resident at the first CSU coed dormitory, Green Hall.

This is where he met his wife to be, Janice (Jan) Mosser, as she was the hall receptionist. While at CSU he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1963 and in 1965 earned a Master’s degree in Guidance Counseling. After teaching and coaching sports in Bushnell, Nebraska, he married Jan on May 22nd, 1966. Immediately after, they traveled to Germany, where he spent a year teaching and counseling Army brats in Vilseck. Upon their return to Colorado, he was hired as a Counselor at Brighton High School.

He spent 30 years at BHS counseling, coaching, and teaching, retiring in 1997. During his tenure, he coached Freshman Boys basketball (1990 Skyline League Champs), Girls Tennis, and Girls Golf.

However, he fostered his primary love, golf, as he served 40 years (half of his life) as Head Boys Golf Coach, winning Skyline League Championships in 1996 and 1997. He coached his son Todd and two of his grandsons during each of their 4 years at BHS, ultimately retiring in 2015.

Norm and Jan purchased Varsity Sporting Goods in 1984 and for 31 years they served the Brighton area providing uniforms, trophies, awards, letter jackets, and embroidered products. He became a silk screening master and was invaluable as the clean-up and fix-it man! They sold the business in 2015, the same year he retired from coaching golf.

His passion for sports and his competitive nature was prevalent throughout his life. At CSU, his dorm’s intramural basketball team won a league title and he was the intramural handball champion. While at CSU, he spent his winters on ski patrol and his summer months teaching biology and sports at a 4-H camp near Walsh, CO. After moving to Brighton, Norm’s passion for sports and the outdoors continued. He won several tournaments in the Riverdale Men’s Club and aced hole number 17, during a Men’s Club event in 2005.

golf tournament for more than 35 years and was the senior flight winner in 1997. He also managed the fields and umpires for Brighton’s adult softball leagues and worked gate admissions at Mile High Kennel Club (Greyhound racing). Prior to purchasing Varsity, he owned and operated Paw’s Timber, cutting, chopping, and delivering firewood. He was dedicated to his personal fitness and faithfully visited the recreation center, swimming and lifting weights until he was 81. He could frequently be seen spinning around town on his bike and he entered several 5k run/walks over the years, winning several medals for his age bracket. To round out his hobbies, he took up gardening later in life and in 2010, encouraged by his brother George, he entered the Nature Sweet tomato contest and won first place, proudly earning a check for $2,500 for the sweetest tomato!

When Jan became Brighton’s first woman Mayor in 2001, he appreciated the title of being Brighton’s first 1st Man. He was active in the community as 1st Man, attending events and ribbon cuttings for 8+ years. In November 2018, Norm and Jan were given the distinction of having the Youth Sports Complex renamed Norm and Jan Pawlowski Park.

They were both incredibly honored to be recognized for their commitment to education, commerce, and community.

Norm was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. He was known for his creative solutions and jerry-rigging techniques. Widely recognized around town for his trademark handlebar moustache, Norm’s pragmatic logic, wry sense of humor, and the loving way he teased everyone was appreciated by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Unfortunately, due to his January 2018 diagnosis, Corticobasal Degeneration, (where the motor part of the brain just slowly goes to sleep) he required long term care at the Brighton Avamere facility. He became a favorite of the Certified Nurse Assistants and Nurse staff due to his sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Donald of South Dakota and George of Arvada. He is survived by his wife, Jan; son, Todd (Shelly) Pawlowski and their children, Brock, Brice, and Jamie of Commerce City; daughter, Jill (Scott) McCollum of Thornton and their son, Jordan (Jackie) and great grandson, Jaden (born March 18, 2021) DelRoss of Northglenn; brother, Marvin (Shirley) of Redmond, OR; sisters, Doris Groenhoff of Boulder and Margaret Sample of Mesa, AZ (unfortunately his sister, Luetta O’Brien of Oakdale, CA passed away July 29, 2020); also surviving are seven nieces and five nephews.

Norm’s Life will be Celebrated on Saturday, September 18, 2021, beginning at 11:30 a.m., at the Brighton High School Gymnasium with a Reception to follow at the Dawg Diner. Eunice Loreen Wegner Sanow Zander went home to be with her Lord on June 2, 2021. She was born on October 10, 1931 in Battle Creek Nebraska to William and Hedwig Wegner the youngest of 3 sisters Ruby, Wilma and Eunice. After her father died unexpectedly in 1937 the family moved to Battle Creek Nebraska then later moved to Brighton Colorado in 1944 where she spent the remainder of her childhood. As a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church Misouri Synod, Eunice and her family were active at Zion Lutheran Church in Brighton where she was confirmed in 1945. After graduating from High School Eunice went to Concordia Teachers College in Seward Nebraska where she graduated in June 1952 with a degree in Elementary Education.

She taught for two years at St. Johns Lutheran School in Denver. It was at St Johns that Eunice met Luther Sanow, a widower, and they were married in November 1953.

Luther’s 6 year old son Stephen then joined them in Denver. After living there for a year the family moved several times ending up in Eugene Oregon in 1958. Timothy William Sanow was born in 1960 followed by Daniel Jacob Sanow in 1963 and Rebecca (Becky) Lu Sanow in 1966. In 1969 the family moved to Vancouver Washington where she spent the

remainder of her life.

In 1976 she began her career as a legal secretary at the law firm of Blair, Schafer, Hutchinson and Wolfe where she worked until her retirement. Eunice and Luther divorced in1995. She married Richard Zander in 2002 and they were married until shortly before his death in 2017.

Eunice had a passion for music. She was a piano and organ player and played the organ for several years at both Grace Lutheran Church and St. Johns Lutheran Church. She also served as choir director at both congregatons. She was a member of Vancouver USA Singers for several years and enjoyed their performances both in the USA and overseas. In her later years she would spend hours playing the piano and singing traditional hymns.

Eunice is survived by her 4 children, 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. We will be having a celebration of life on Friday, September 17, 2021 10 am at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Vancouver Washington followed by private internment. Friends and acquaintences are welcome to attend. Mom we love you and miss you and we look forward to being with you again in heaven.

June 3, 1937 ~ August 22, 2021 his passion for football with his nieces and nephews. For about 30 years, he showed his love for youth sports and football when he “ran the chains” for the Wiggins Tigers.

Earl was a member of the Colorado Chapter of the Polka Lovers Klub of America. What wonderful times he had with all the friends he made there!

Earl Vaughn Mathisen was born June 3, 1937 to George and Myrtle (Jensen) Mathisen of Fort Lupton, Colorado. He often talked about the happy childhood he had growing up on the family farm with his siblings; James, Glenda, Arlene, Judy and George.

Earl attended grades 1 – 9 in Fort Lupton and then graduated from Brighton High School in 1957. His main regret was that his mom didn’t allow him to play football. After graduation, Earl worked for John Deere Implement in Wiggins and later for OK Farms maintaining their equipment.

About 1961, Earl decided to join the US Airforce Reserve. Soon after that, he was called to active service during the Berlin Crisis. Following his time in the Airforce, Earl became a member of the VFW. Earl was an avid Denver Broncos fan and part of the South Stand Fans holding season tickets to Mile High Stadium for several years. He loved to share

Earl had a love for life. He treasured his family and many friends. He will be missed dearly and will always be loved.

Memorial services honoring Earl will begin at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, September 10, 2021 at Tabor Funeral Home, 75 South 13th Avenue, in Brighton. A luncheon will be held immediately afterwards at the Brighton Elks, beginning at 12:00 noon.

The Walls that Heals memorial replica arrived in Brighton to honor more than three million Americans who are serving in the U.S. Armed Force and with the engraved names of 58,279 servicemen and women that made sacrifices in Vietnam.

“It’s a complex process to set it up to make it as perfect and as exact as the wall in Washington DC, we send out two staffers from Washington, DC, to lead all these volunteers and how to set it up and make it as perfect as the wall in DC,” said Tim Tetz, Wall that Heals Site Manager.

The wall is 375 feet, its three quarters the scale of the one in Washington DC. The wall in Washington DC is 500 feet. At three-quarters scale, it’s seven in a half feet tall at the apex and it reaches out 187 feet on each side.

Two staffers from Walls That Heals and over 30 volunteers with veterans and United Airlines employees came on Wednesday, September 1st to Brighton’s City Hall Carmichael Park to help construct the wall.

The wall is owned by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund. It started the wall’s current tour in March 2021 with 28 stops from coast to coast every weekend. They move the wall to a different community every Wednesday of every week throughout the season, constructing the

We do what we can to honor those who are serving us and keeping our freedoms. It’s very important to us to give back and that’s beautiful.”

Hogg’s dad John Bauserman served from June of 1968 to 1969 working in Army intelligence in Saigon.

Marijuana tax eyed for ballot

The Nov. 2 ballot in Brighton may have grown during an Aug. 31 Brighton City Council meeting.

Council approved a resolution to put a marijuana sales tax ballot question on the ballot. The vote was unanimous.

A city statement said the ballot question would allow the sale of retail marijuana and marijuana products within city limits.

If it winds up on the ballot, the change to city code would go forward if voters approve a 4 percent sales taxon marijuana and marijuana products. Staff thinks the revenue could total $1.5 million per

year.

“Revenue from this special sales tax would be used to fund capital projects, including recreational amenities,” the statement said. “No more than 20-percent of the revenues would be spent on administrative costs.”

TABOR, the Taxpayers Bill of RIghts, requires voters to approve tax increases.

The statement said staff presentations will help finalize the legal piece of marijuana retail sales. The city plans public hearings to take feedback and public comment. Dates have not been announced.

The fire district board also contributed with support and planning.

“We have a great board and they helped us out. They support everything that we want to accomplish as a fire district and it has allowed us to build this magnificent building.

We’re very proud of it and I thank them for their job and everything they do for me makes my job very easy,” the chief said.

Board member Shaun Austin said, “It’s very exciting. It’s nice to have a station to serve the south side of the district. I think it’s a great benefit for our district.”

“I was not out in the jungles with the guys, but we were doing our part to keep everyone safe and protect 58,000 soldiers there and who did not make it, “ said Bauserman.

“Our mission is to make sure they stayed away from the enemies and didn’t get surprised.

I’m helping build the wall to support my daughter, support the cause and the folks that did not make it back. We are doing this for all of them.”

“It’s a nice thing to bring here and I have been to the wall in Washington. I just thought it would be fun to be a part of bringing this to Brighton,” said Sands. It’s a great way to honor the vets.

Maurice Mercens a Navy Vietnam veteran served two tours from 1965 to 1967. He volunteers his time to build the wall for his fellow vets.

“I owe it to my brothers and sisters,” said Mercens.

Kashinda Pullen, an advance planner in the airline’s flight training center, volunteered because it is an important project for the veterans.

“I am here because I think it’s always a cool opportunity to give back and do something of importance. I try to set a goal to complete so many volunteer service hours, so when I see something that’s cool and out of the ordinary, I try to take advantage of it,” said Pullen.

Chris Locky a United Airlines Manager for the Standard Operations Center is volunteering because his father-in-law was a Vietnam veteran that recently passed away.

“I support the effort for constructing this wall and contributing to the community.

So, I heard about this one and I’m supporting the cause,” said Locky.
