The Brighton Economic Development Corp. and the city of Brighton announced the arrival of Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers last week. Construction began at 2203 Prairie Center Parkway in advance of an opening late this fall. “There has been a lot of anticipation of what business will be going in at that location,” said Brighton Mayor Gregory Mills in a city statement. “Freddy’s will be a great addition to the city’s dining options.” The location is 3,050 square feet

Fort Lupton is growing, which means City Hall may have to move. That was the gist of comments from City Administrator Chris Cross during a council town hall forum on July 13. The idea is in the earliest of stages and city officials haven’t made potential costs public or discussed the timeline for the related project. Planning Director Todd Hodges wondered if such a move was feasible. “I can’t think of any place to do it,” he said. “The best option is to move the police department. If more parking were available, we could use the museum or the old sheriff’s office.” “If we move, we have to find office spaces that are proper and then figure out how to operate,” Cross said. The former home of Dale’s Pharmacy is a possibility, too, but Cross said that building should “have a retail aspect.” No one on council or city staff knew what was going to go into the building. “We need to look at options,” Hodges said. “Now is the time to look,” said Councilwoman Shannon Rhoda. “The budget is coming. We can set aside some money to get that done.” “It was just discussion for the future as we continue to grow,” Cross said. “I wanted to get a general sense of direction for options. Weld County celebrated the opening of a new recreational trail, the Weld Legacy Trail July 17, according to a press release. “I’m excited for the opening of the Weld Legacy Trail and even more excited for the public to enjoy it,” Weld County Commissioner Scott James said. “The fact that this trail is Weld County’s first multi-use trail and that it extends into St. Vrain State Park makes it even more unique and adds to the recreational opportunities available to our residents. The trail starts behind the South West Service Complex at 4209 Weld County Road 24½ in Firestone, and it extends into St. Vrain State Park. It’s a paved trail for biking, running, or walking with lush foliage, flowers
and rolling hills. It took years of planning the landscape by the Weld County Department of Public Works with months of design work and improvement to create the trail to be resistant to flooding. It’s also user-friendly with directional signs for residents and visitors, according to a statement. A new addition is an 802-foot section of the trail that was moved away from a nearby spillway which includes an 82-foot long pedestrian bridge. “Weld County is widely known for agriculture and oil and gas. But there are also plenty of recreational opportunities in our county, with St. Vrain State Park and the Pawnee National Grassland in our boundary,” said Weld County Commissioner Lori Saine in the statement. “The improvements made to this trail provide an additional option

for people looking to experience Weld County in a new way, which is exciting.” According to officials, the trail was designed along the Front Range to connect surrounding communities. In early 2000, the property was
closed to the public fbecause the land was being used as an active gravel mine. Then Central Colorado Water Conservancy District purchased the land in 2017 for iwater storage. The county held its right-ofway agreement to build the gravel pits for its water storage as well as continue to design the recreational trail. “This trail personifies the 20-plus year partnership between CCWCD and Weld County in this location,” said Randy Ray, executive director of CCWCD, in the statement. “We are excited to participate as a partner with Weld County to provide public access to this new recreational feature in the county.” St. Vrain State Park has been involved in the progress of the trail and also opened the trail in 2018 and 2019 for “Bike to Work Day,” according to Weld County officials.

Community survey available in Brighton CITY HALL STAFF REPORT
The city of Brighton is taking part in The National Community Survey through Polco National Research Center to get resident input on such issues as crime and safety and employment opportunities to overall quality of life. A city statement said 2,700 households will begin receiving surveys in the mail this month. Responses will be weighted and analyzed for results. After the return of the mailed surveys, an online version of the same survey will be available for the rest of the community to complete in August. A city statement said residents have to provide a ZIP code to prove residency
and so that there aren’t duplicate participants. The city also said it helps staff see general area of respondents. Answers are confidential, and the city said personal information will be securely stored on Polco. “This survey is a great way to get a pulse of the community,” said Jane Bais DiSessa, Brighton city manager, in a statement. “It’s important we do this every couple of years to help align the priorities of Council and city staff with that of the community. We are looking forward to seeing the results from this survey.” The city and NRC conducted a Brighton community survey in 2014. Email communications@brightonco. gov for more information

Marijuana ordinance update It’s back to the beginning for the city’s medical and retail marijuana ordinances. The reason is council’s desire to use some form of lottery system to decide which businesses can apply for one of four available licenses. Because that is substantially different from the original draft ordinances, the process has to begin again. City Clerk. Mari Pena said the restart will push the effective date of the ordinances to Sept. 29. Applications could open up as soon as Oct. 1 and be
available during the month of October. “Will we have an opportunity to look at the applications?” asked Mayor Zo Stieber. “Yes,” Pena said. “The consultant recommended that. We’re going to get a package together to distribute to you at the next town hall (6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 27).” “That’d be great,” Stieber said. Earlier in the month, City attorney Andy Ausmus and consultant Laura Bauer encouraged the council to use a public lottery system. Bauer, who is advising the town of Dolores and the city of Grand Junction as they begin their licensing processes, told the council that more cities are opting to use public lotteries to start.
