Fort Lupton hosts flag retirement ceremony Scouts from across area mark decades-long tradition BY BELEN WARD BWARD@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

The South Platte Valley Historical Society celebrated its annual Flag Retirement Ceremony on July 5th at the Fort Lupton Fort. The Boys Scouts from Firestone troops 63-B and 73-G, and also Longmont troop 67-G traveled to Fort Lupton to participate in the retirement of flag. “The boys and girls are still separated by troops with the Boys Scouts of America (BSA), so this year we invited a couple of girls and they did great and pulled it off,” said Butch Walter Josh with the Wapiti District Greater Wyoming-Longs Peak Council, BSA.

The retirement ceremony When a flag becomes, torn, worn, and soiled it’s replaced with a new flag. The old flag is retired with dignity and respect as the Americas flag to honor its courage and strength. When retiring a flag, there are two methods of burial or flame that are dignified, according to BSA. The United States law code title 36, section 176, allows the retirement of a flag and it reads; The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” The Boy Scouts troops folded the flag it’s a customary triangle with their traditional scripts processes then it’s placed into the flames for its respectful burial. The Boy Scouts of America publication called “Our Flag” states; “When the national flag is worn beyond repair, burn it thoroughly

and completely on a modest, but blazing fire. This should be done simply with dignity and respect. Be sure the flag is reduced to ashes unrecognizable as a former flag.” The history of the Boys Scouts Josh said Lieutenant Robert Baden-Powell, a British Military officer, founded the Boy’s Scouts in 1910. He felt that the youths could learn some military skills that can be utilized and used everywhere. By 1922 the Boys Scouts was brought to the United States and over 32 countries. “Back then during the active wars, the Boy Scouts helped military servicemen with their equipment. For decades they also volunteered to present the flag and learning flag etiquette, handover, respecting the flag and its history,” said Josh. “It’s been a tradition for the Boys Scouts to be involved in the Flag Retirement Ceremony,” said Josh.

Culex mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile in Weld County in areas of Greeley, Evans, Kersey, and Lasalle, according to the Weld County Department of Health and Environment. “The increasing hot weather and afternoon thundershowers have created favorable conditions for the Culex mosquito that carries West Nile Virus,” Mark Lawley, executive Director of the Weld County Health Department said in a written statement. According to officials, three times more Culex mosquitoes have been trapped in 2021 than in previous years, based on an analysis of five years worth of testing. In Weld County Zone 2, which includes Johnstown, Milliken, Platteville, and Zone 3 (Firestone, Dacono and Fort Lupton) the mosquitoes that were trapped weekly by a health department contractor did not test positive for West Nile. It’s a situation that is being monitored by officials; no human cases have been reported in Weld County as of late last week. The city of Fort Lupton has its own program. It contracts with VDCI Integrated Mosquito Management to test trapped mosquitoes from June through mid-September. The spraying is every Thursday SEE WEST NILE, P8
