A recount of the November election race for the seat that represents east Aurora and far east Centennial on Arapahoe County’s board of elected leaders confirmed that the incumbent Republican will hold onto his seat for another four years.

Commissioner Jeff Baker bested Democratic challenger Idris Keith by 164 votes in the final results, according to a spokesperson for the Arapahoe County Baker Clerk and Recorder’s Office, which oversees elections in the county.

The race went to an automatic recount as required by law due to Baker’s earlier lead of 165 votes.

(The results barely changed.) Recounts are held when the difference between candidates’ votes is less than or equal to one-half of 1% of the leader’s vote count, according to the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office, which oversees elections in the state. In this case, the threshold for a recount was roughly 205 votes.

Commissioners make up the governing body of a county, somewhat similar to city councils.

Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office investigators arrested a person suspected of fatally shooting a gas station clerk in a robbery the night of Nov. 26 in Centennial, the sheriff ’s office announced Dec. 11.

Investigators received numerous tips related to the identity of the suspect and were able to obtain warrants and arrest the suspect on Dec. 11, the sheriff ’s office said in a news release.

The sheriff ’s office did not release the identity or a photograph of the suspect in the release.

The suspect was described previously as a white male who appeared to be in his mid-20s and wore a gray hoodie, a black-andwhite plaid shirt or jacket, gray pants, and tan shoes, according to the sheriff ’s office. He appeared to be between 5-foot-3 and 5-foot-7, wore eyeglasses and has an average build, according to an earlier news release.

After walking into the convenience store at 8263 S. Quebec St. — near East County Line Road, just north of Highlands Ranch — the suspect “asked for cigarettes then asked for everything,” the sheriff ’s office said in a tweet.

Surveillance video shows that the suspect and the clerk spoke for a short time, according to an earlier sheriff ’s office news release.

The suspect then pointed a handgun at the clerk, who put cigarettes and money from the cash register in a shopping bag, according to a sheriff ’s office news release. When the clerk handed the suspect the bag, the suspect shot him. The suspect then left the store. Authorities received a call

about the shooting at 6:47 p.m.

The clerk died after sustaining a gunshot wound to the left abdomen. He was identified as Mauricio Omar Perez, 24, according to the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office.

Another gas station in Centennial on East Arapahoe Road was also robbed the same day in an incident where the suspect fired a single round into the ceiling, according to the sheriff ’s office. It was unclear if the suspect authorities arrested Dec. 11 is also suspected in that incident.

No other employees or customers were in the store at the time of the first shooting on Quebec Street, said Deputy John Bartmann, a spokesman for the sheriff ’s office. But citizens later came in, found the clerk and called 911.

Deputies searched the area with the assistance of the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office and the Lone Tree Police Department, according to the news release.

The second gas station in Centennial that was robbed on that same day by a suspect with a somewhat similar description sits on East Arapahoe Road near South Havana Street, according to a sheriff ’s office news release on Nov. 30.

At about 4:30 pm, a male entered the Conoco gas station at 10210 E. Arapahoe Road in central Centennial and pointed a handgun at the clerk, according to the sheriff ’s office. The clerk gave the suspect the cash drawer, and then the suspect fired a single round into the ceiling, the release said. The clerk was not injured and the suspect left southbound on foot from the area.

That suspect was described as a white male between 5-foot-3 and 5-foot-7 with a medium build who wore a gray sweatshirt with neon lettering on the front, gray pants, gray shoes, a black face mask and tan work gloves, according to the sheriff ’s office.

LPS eyes return to classrooms in January Elementary to come back first; schools are safe, superintendent says

Littleton Public Schools is planning to bring elementary school students back to classrooms for full-week in-person classes in early January, with an eye toward bringing all students back in phases, district officials said at the Dec. 10 school board meeting.

Citing new guidance from state and national health officials calling for children to return to schools where safe, Superintendent Brian Ewert Ewert rolled out a plan that would see elementary students back in classrooms five days a week beginning Jan. 5.

LPS schools have been fully remote since November, after spending much of the fall semester under a “hybrid” learning model that saw most students in classrooms just two days a week. The district has not held regular in-person class schedules since March, part of efforts to control the spread of COVID-19.

If the return of elementary students goes well, Ewert said, the district will bring middle and high school students back for hybrid learning later in January.

If classroom learning models are successful, the district hopes to bring all students back for full-time in-person learning by April.

Though numerous students and staff tested positive for COVID-19 during the fall semester, Ewert said the decision to go fully remote had very little to do with in-school transmission rates, safety concerns or fear, but far more to do with the impossible logistics of continuing

school with so many teachers and staff in quarantine at any given time.

“We believe schools are exponentially more safe than the rest of the community,” Ewert said. “We’re not fearful of opening schools … We have controlled systems. We can tell people where to go, where to stand, where to sit. We can make it work.”

Targeted quarantines caused massive, sporadic disruption to district schools in the fall, Ewert said, sometimes forcing the closure of entire schools because of a lack of teachers. Other services, like cafeterias and bus routes, were similarly impacted.

Ewert said new guidance from the Tri-County Health Department and the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment (CDPHE) will allow more targeted quarantines affecting smaller groups.

Still, he said, more quarantines will likely strain teacher capacity further, and he called on local parents who are eager to support in-person learning to volunteer to become substitute teachers.

“All you need is a high school diploma and to be able to pass a background check,” Ewert said.

Though the district will continue to track local virus transmission and infection data, Ewert said officials won’t rely as heavily on community data for decision-making as was laid out over the summer.

School board president Jack Reutzel said he was comfortable backing off using community data to decide whether schools should stay open.

“We have the ability to change our minds when better data becomes available,” Reutzel said, adding that tracking metrics were set up over the summer before anyone knew what a return to classrooms would do to transmission rates. “We didn’t have the ability to understand SEE LPS, P4

Republican confirmed winner in DA race Democrat Padden concedes to Kellner after close contest

Republican John Kellner was confirmed the victor over Democrat Amy Padden in a close contest for 18th Judicial District attorney after the state completed a mandatory recount in the race.

Kellner secured 50.12% of the vote, or 287,402 ballots, while Kellner Padden garnered 49.88%, or 285,977 votes. The district comprises Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties.

Kellner, who will succeed Republican George Brauchler, celebrated with a statement on social media.

“It’s official! The recount is complete across all four counties and I’ll be taking the oath of office as the next DA of the 18th Judicial District on Jan. 12. Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible,” Kellner wrote on Twitter.

Padden conceded on Dec. 5, still waiting on results from Lincoln County but expecting a final margin of 1,425 votes, or less than 0.25% difference.

In a release, Padden’s campaign pointed to the number of registered voters in the district — 27.5% are Democrats and 30.3% Republicans — and that 21,000 more Republicans cast ballots in the race than Democrats.

“We ran a positive, policy-based campaign that resonated with hundreds of thousands of voters. I am eternally grateful to my family, my team, and our amazing group of supporters for all their support,” Padden said in a statement.

Padden said she has offered Kellner her help in implementing reforms promised on the campaign trail.

The candidates had squared off touting their experience and ability to helm the state’s most populous judicial district amid nationwide calls for criminal justice reform.

Kellner has pledged to make more data available than what the district publishes today regarding criminal justice statistics and demographics of people in the system. He also promised community town halls and an external audit of prosecutorial data to check the system for implicit bias.

what was going to happen in our schools, because we hadn’t started our schools yet.”

Amanda Crosby, who heads the district’s teachers’ union, said a survey she conducted of teachers showed many supported a return to classrooms, though she said she hoped the plan to return in January could be reevaluated if virus transmission and hospitalization rates worsen.

“LPS can make plans, but they must be contingent on virus spread that makes it realistic,” she said. “Students need predictability and a lack of disruptions in their learning.”

Crosby also urged the community to adhere to public health guidance to keep transmission rates low, like wearing face masks in public and avoiding gatherings.

Several parents who called into the meeting were adamant that they felt schools should reopen for full-time in-person learning immediately, especially in light of district data presented at the meeting showing that failing grade rates at the high school level are spiking.

“I’m very worried about our teenagers,” said a parent of two students. “School is not that hard right now. If kids are failing, it’s because they’re doing nothing, because they’re depressed, lonely and isolated.

They need to be in the building.

Schools are safe.”

Another parent of a high school student said she was exasperated with remote and hybrid learning.

“Are we purely at the mercy of Tri-County Health?” she said. “I can only wonder if the teachers’ union leads these decisions. The bottom line is, my son needs to be back in person. The mental health of our young people is in jeopardy.”

Board member Robert Reichardt, who recently recovered from a case of COVID-19, pushed back against some of the criticism.

“There’s an insinuation that schools aren’t open because we’re not being leaders or we’re beholden to the teachers’ union,” Reichardt said. “But the reason is there’s a pandemic. A highly contagious pandemic that has infected one out of every 20 of our neighbors. It killed five people in our county last week. It’s killing friends, neighbors, parents and grandparents. That’s the problem.”

Board member Carrie WarrenGully, who will leave the board in January to take on a new role as an Arapahoe County Commissioner, said it’s up to the community to make sure schools and the economy can reopen safely.

“It’s a sacrifice we all have to make collectively,” Warren-Gully said. “That’s something we all have to think about in this time of year when our instinct is to do something different.”

Will metro counties see a second stay-at-home order?

‘Too early to tell,’ says health chief as deaths, cases appear to level off

On April 22, 40 people in Colorado died with coronavirus, marking the state’s one-day record for deaths among people with COVID-19 in the spring.

After months of the daily death count falling and then staying steady, it jumped back up in the fall.

Colorado matched its record on Nov. 11. A week later, the state posted a one-day total of 42 deaths.

On both Nov. 27 and Dec. 1, the state saw 60 deaths each day among those with coronavirus, Colorado’s worst days on record as of Dec. 11.

The rate of deaths — and new COVID-19 cases — now appear to be leveling off, but Colorado’s new cases per day still dwarf the reported numbers from the spring and summer, making Colorado’s previous “peaks” look like tiny blips. If the death rate only plateaus, Colorado could still see dozens dead each day.

And if public health officials decide that the Denver metro area — and other regions — need more coronavirus-related restrictions, they have few places left to go other than to impose the kind of stay-athome orders that drastically recast life and business in the spring.

It’s too early to say for sure, but at least as of Dec. 10, fears of Thanksgiving gatherings unleashing more severe virus spread in Colorado appear not to have come true. The rate of new cases appeared to have plateaued, or even slightly declined, according to the state’s COVID-19 website data.

The head of Tri-County Health Department said it’s “too early to tell” whether Denver metro counties will need new stay-at-home orders.

“I am pleasantly surprised that we haven’t seen more of a postThanksgiving bounce,” said John Douglas, executive director of the health agency for Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties. “I suspect this is due to the red-level capacity limits and the publicity about the gravity of the pandemic that got many of us practicing safer behaviors.”

Douglas referred to the “red” restrictions on Colorado’s COVID-19 dial, a level that bans private gatherings, indoor dining at restaurants and tightens capacity limits at some types of businesses. It took effect Nov. 20 in Denver metro counties and other areas of the state. Now, just over half the state’s 64 counties operate in level red.

State public health officials wouldn’t say how likely new stay-athome orders are for metro Denver and other regions. Officials are “pleased to see a plateau in cases, but our numbers still are significantly higher than they were in the

spring,” said a statement from the Colorado State Joint Information Center, which takes questions for the state public-health department.

“It appears that the level red mitigation tactics are working. That said, we don’t yet know if increases from Thanksgiving will create a spike or what cases will look like after the December holidays,” the statement said. “We need Coloradans to continue to avoid gatherings with other households, wear masks when interacting with people outside of their household and maintain at least 6 feet of distance from others.”

Getting to ‘level purple’

Continuing its county-by-county approach to coronavirus restrictions, the state’s new revision of the COVID-19 dial — the color-coded set of restrictions counties must follow based on local virus spread — added a “level purple” in November. That’s the new term for a stay-at-home order.

Miracle on Elati Street Epic displays of holiday lights in Englewood are beloved tradition

Few places outside the North Pole have as much Christmas spirit as a pair of houses on South Elati Street in Englewood.

On any given night between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, the block of Elati just north of Belleview Avenue is thronged with giddy youngsters, beaming parents and grandparents, and on a recent night even a real-live troupe of old-fashioned carolers, all exploring a pair of elaborate holiday displays that for years have drawn visitors from around the area.

On the west side of the street, the Kloewer family (pronounced clayver) is back for the 26th time operating their legendary Christmas house, a continuation of a massive holiday-season display begun by Ron Kloewer’s parents in the early 1980s.

Across the street, Ron’s childhood friend Robert Jones and his wife Joanne are continuing their 8-year-old tradition of operating a Griswold-esque display of their own, with plans to keep it growing as the years go by.

But the whole shebang almost didn’t happen this year.

“We weren’t sure how people would react in the year of COVID,” Kloewer said. “We didn’t want to go to all the trouble just for no one to show up, or for everyone to just stay in their cars. If you’re just driving by, you’re not getting the whole experience.”

As it turns out, people have shown up by the score. Kloewer said the houses have proven as popular as ever, perhaps even more so as nearby holiday attractions like A Hudson Christmas at Littleton’s Hudson Gardens have been canceled.

“It’s something fun and traditional you can do with your kids without making reservations or paying an arm and a leg,” Kloewer said.

The Kloewers have been putting on their light show since the 1995 holiday season, though in the early years it was outshined by Kloewer’s

Dick and Alice began decorating in 1983, Kloewer said, with Dick building dozens of custom displays: miniature wooden houses containing motorized themed scenes. Many of Dick’s miniature houses survive today, incorporated into their son’s annual display.

move into level purple depends more squarely on whether hospital capacity risks being breached.

That scenario could be defined a few different ways, according to the public health order behind Colorado’s dial, but the simplest is when hospitals approach 90% of their reported “surge capacity.”

Surge capacity means a hospital’s ability to transition medical and surgical beds to intensive care unit (ICU) beds, create plans for additional staffing, and manage or delay elective surgeries, according to the State Joint Information Center. “Elective” means a surgery can be delayed without undue risk to health.

Estimates based on data from before Thanksgiving say that if Colorado kept up its levels of mask-wearing, physical distancing and moving activities outside, then hospital and ICU demand may stay within Colorado’s estimated surge capacity, according to a Dec. 4 report by the Colorado School of Public Health.

But if Coloradans let their guard down enough over the holidays, demand on hospitals could break those estimates, the report says.

If that happens, the state could reach ICU surge capacity in early January or even late December depending on how closed-off Coloradans keep themselves from contacts.

Mesa program presents ‘trade-offs,’ health chief says

It was still unclear as of Dec. 11 whether the state will allow businesses in level red counties to operate at level orange, though.

That was to be determined depending on data from Mesa County on whether a 5-star program is compatible with the red level, according to the state public-health department.

Asked whether the program would allow indoor dining in level red counties, the State Joint Information Center seemed to indicate it would, saying: “In the draft proposal, if a county qualifies and chooses to develop the 5-star program, indoor dining could be allowed.”

It’s also unclear whether the state will roll out the program on schedule.

“While the program might launch on Dec. 18, counties will likely need additional time to implement it,” the information center’s statement said.

Vaccine not immediate fix

agencies, such as Tri-County Health in the metro area, could choose to issue their own stay-athome orders whether the state’s dial requires it or not. Back in March, three metro-area public

health departments issued stayat-home orders, covering Adams, Arapahoe, Douglas, Jefferson and Boulder counties, just before Gov. Jared Polis announced the statewide stay-at-home.

But Tri-County Health probably wouldn’t issue its own order at this point in the pandemic, said Douglas.

“I think this is unlikely since we now have a state framework (the dial) for all counties contributing to, or at risk from, a breach in hospital capacity to move together, which would be much more effective than movement of individual counties,” Douglas said.

Program could loosen limits

Meanwhile, businesses’ eyes are set on the state potentially going in the other direction: loosening rather than tightening restrictions, and possibly reopening indoor dining.

As of mid-December, the state public-health department was considering new rules that would let businesses operate at higher capacity than current restrictions normally allow — as long as the businesses stick to strict protocols designed to prevent the virus’ spread in their buildings.

Colorado calls it the “business best practice certification” program, modeled after a system Mesa County has “pioneered and has successfully run since the summer,” according to the state publichealth department. That’s known as the “5-star rating program.”

If the state adopts a similar program, businesses could generally operate based on a level of the state’s COVID-19 dial that is one notch less severe than the level the business would otherwise have to follow. For example, a business in a “level orange” county could operate at “level yellow” capacity restrictions.

Even as word of vaccine rollouts spread across the nation, state officials are hoping Coloradans keep in mind that the general population won’t have access to a vaccine until the summer — and that’s if everything goes according to plan.

The highest-risk health care workers and individuals, and then moderate-risk health care workers and first responders, are expected to have access to the vaccine this winter, according to Colorado’s COVID-19 website.

Up next are other high-risk individuals and essential workers in spring, and then comes the general public — anyone age 18-64 without high-risk health conditions — in the summer.

But a speedy timeline depends on “steady shipments of vaccines from the federal government and steady administration of the vaccine by providers around the state,” a governor’s office news release said.

An estimated 1 in 40 Coloradans are infectious with COVID-19 — the highest prevalence to date, the School of Public Health’s Dec. 4 report says.

And even accounting for the lack of testing early in the pandemic — a factor that makes Colorado’s spring tally of COVID-19 cases appear artificially low — Coloradans are now likely becoming infected at more than twice the true rate experienced during spring, according to the report.

The estimated peak in the spring of all asymptomatic and symptomatic infections — not just the cases that are actually reported, generally, through testing — is estimated to have occurred around late March, with nearly 6,000 new infections in one day.

In mid-November, the one-day estimate of new infections had reached around 13,000. The reported number of new cases for Nov. 12 was 6,600.

Even by a conservative estimate, Colorado could see nearly 5,600 deaths associated with COVID-19 by the end of the year, the report says.

As of Dec. 10, Colorado had seen 3,012 deaths due to COVID-19.

The total deaths among cases was 3,846 — the number who died with COVID-19 but not necessarily due to it.

Worship, ceremonies now classified as essential

In light of federal court input on capacity limits at houses of worship, the state public-health department has reclassified worship and related ceremonies such as weddings to be “critical services” — meaning they now can exceed capacity limits meant to combat the coronavirus.

Those activities are now classified as critical in the same way other exempt industries and activities — such as health care, food banks, child care and a long list of others — are given exceptions in the public health order behind Colorado’s COVID-19 dial. That’s the color-coded system of restrictions counties must follow based on their local virus spread.

The revised guidelines apply to worship and associated ceremonies such as weddings, funerals and

baptisms, whether religious or secular. But after-parties for these activities are considered indoor or outdoor events, according to the State Joint Information Center, which takes questions for the state public-health department. Indoor and outdoor events have their own specific limits in Colorado’s dial.

Ceremonies and worship services must do their best to follow public health recommendations, the department said in a news release.

“But (they) may exceed recommended capacity caps if they cannot conduct their essential activity within those restrictions,” the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment said in the news release. The changes took effect Dec. 7.

Ceremonies and worship services still must require masks indoors, other prevention measures such as

6-foot spacing between members of different households, and appropriate sanitation, according to the release. Outdoor activities are still strongly preferred, it added.

Input from the U.S. Supreme Court recently indicated that limits on religious activities could not be more restrictive than requirements implemented for other sectors, the statement from the State Joint Information Center said.

John Douglas, head of Tri-County Health Department, expressed some concern about expanded attendance at worship gatherings.

“This is complicated due to the recent Supreme Court decision and First Amendment rights,” Douglas said. “Church services and gatherings have been sources of ‘superspreader’ events and have been identified as important areas of (virus) transmission in published studies.”

If religious services and life-rite events are handled carefully — with masks, social distancing, adequate ventilation and people staying home when sick — they can be relatively safer, Douglas said.

“Faith leaders will have to be particularly attentive to these parameters during the end-of-year holiday season to avoid circumstances of COVID spread during their gatherings,” Douglas said.

The state also expanded the ability of educational indoor settings such as museums to operate.

Indoor events in general are closed in level-red counties — which includes the entire Denver metro area and much of the rest of Colorado — but now, educational institutions such as museums, aquariums and zoos may operate at 25% capacity or, generally, 25 people per room, whichever is fewer.

Music, eventually, finds its way into almost everything, including a pandemic. The same is true for all of the arts.

Visual artists, QUIET filmmakers, writDESPERATION ers, and others have been reacting to COVID-19 ever since it began to hit America and, in many ways, limit Americans.

Musicians have responded to dire conditions, authority, wars, prejudice, Craig Marshall Smith and innumerable hardships forever.

Some of us may have been initiated by Woody Guthrie’s politically charged anthems. He also wrote “This Land is Your Land.”

The decade of the 1960s was a ripe period for musicians, many of whom were tagged as “protest singers,” especially Bob Dylan, but also

The news right now is a bombardment.

Listening to music is one of the ways I (try to) overcome the frustrations and anxieties. I don’t invite “protest” music into that as I did during, for example, the Vietnam War. Music and movies are my antidote. After a day saturated with “Breaking News” I want comedy, romantic comedy, drama, but I don’t want violence, revenge, meanness or cruelty. There’s plenty of that in the paper.

After he left Them, Van Morrison recorded “Brown Eyed Girl,” which you can hear at least once a week on the radio.

“Skipping and a jumping / In the misty morning fog with you” is a long old way away from “No more celebrities.”

Often it’s the other way around.

Artists protest when we’re young, then soften (or resign) as we get older.

Of course, many go down fighting whatever it is.

Pete Seeger was still being Pete Seeger until the day he died (2014 at

Peter, Paul, and Mary, Phil Ochs, Richie Havens, Joan Baez, Nina Simone, even Marvin Gaye.

A British band at the time, Them, was uninvolved, and recorded hits such as “Gloria,” “Baby, Please Don’t Go,” and “Here Comes the Night.”

The lead singer, who was born in 1945, went solo and still performs.

I was half-surprised to read about a song he’s written and recorded titled “No More Lockdown,” and anti-lockdown tune.

“No more celebrities / No more celebrities telling us / Telling us what we’re supposed to feel / No more lockdown.”

He takes a bigger swing at “experts.”

“No more Imperial College Scientists making up crooked facts.”

It’s not smooth and pretty, is it?

Neither was Dylan’s “Masters of War,” a song I have outgrown; not one I’m likely to listen to on a Sunday in 2020.

As an artist, I have always avoided current events, choosing instead to find solace in painting and drawing rather than a forum.

Amy Winehouse died at age 27. Sonny Bono died in a skiing accident, both without a will. Yes, we even need to plan for the unexpected.

Intestate means someone has died without a will. The probate court is where a judge will determine who will receive assets according to state law. Since probate is a public process, many people want to avoid that. It also requires a six-month wait to determine if there are any creditors who need to come forward and make a claim against the estate. Proper estate planning may help avoid the probate process.

WORDS Who is on your Do Not Call list? I don’t mean the businesses you have asked to stop calling you, or the Do Not Call lists that you have registered your telephone number with to stop telemarketers from trying to Michael Norton reach you. No, I am referring to the people in your life who have made your Do Not Call list.

Well, maybe we don’t refer to it as a Do Not Call list, but for too many of us, somehow along the way we have intentionally or inadvertently created our own Have Not Called list.

Life gets in the way, we grow apart, work is too demanding, our calendars are already jam packed, we have been on video calls and conference calls all day and just can’t make time for one more call. Our ears are sore, our voice is crackling, and we just need to hit the pause button.

Let’s back up eight months to when this pandemic became more real than many people had predicted. As we were going through restrictions and quarantines, many families took advantage of the time to schedule family video conferences, bringing in aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, and friends together as a way to stay in touch during a crisis. It was more than we had ever done before the pandemic came around. And it was awesome, tiring maybe, but awesome all the same.

It seems that the longer this virus hangs around, the more serious it has become; the more our calls and video conferences may have slowed down as well. For those of us who were all working remotely, and in some cases, going to an office or other place for that human touch, we had some of our needs met through interactions or engagement with others. Unfortunately, this is not the case for many other folks. And they are not “just other folks,” they are our folks, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers, and friends who have been shuttered in place for a very long time.

Releasing 2020 with a fake tree and TV fireplace?

ertainly, the year 2020 will go down in our history books, personal journals, and perhaps our recipe books.

But what about our GUEST year-end celebrations? This year, COLUMN we’ve experienced a world around us full of conflict socially, interpersonally, and even within ourselves.

Knowing some of these are over, yet some still lingering, how do we Linda Newell ritualize a year’s end when not all of these are tied up nicely with a bow?

Thinking about this, the word that keeps popping in my head is

list? That question was in no way intended to make you feel guilty, if you have read this column before, you will know that is true. Instead, consider it encouragement to make calls, send texts, write letters or quick notes, send cards, drive by their home, wave through a window, or anything that will let anyone close to you know that they are loved, not forgotten, appreciated, and important to you.

There is that saying about being lonely, even when we are not alone. And when I think about that, I think about the nurses, doctors, first responders, military personnel, teachers, and others who have been on the front lines from day one. They are usually never alone, but many have shared that they have never felt lonelier. I’ll bet that each one of us knows someone who serves our community who would love to receive a call, a text, a card or anything letting them know that they are not alone, and that they are in our thoughts.

A will provides an avenue for you to leave instructions about how to distribute your assets, name a personal representative to settle the estate, and name guardians for a minor or a child with a disability.

This is a very important first step in estate planning, to draft a will.

Keep in mind that a will by itself may not avoid probate. It depends on what the instructions in the will are. Some wills direct a trust to be established upon death. Some folks establish a living trust while they are alive that then directs assets upon their passing. Typically, with a trust, the probate process is not needed unless there are assets outside of the trust or the will and without beneficiaries listed. It is important to understand the different types of trusts and what is best for your situation. Plan to discuss your

“grace.” Sitting next to my artificial Christmas tree and looking at the video of a fireplace on my television has been strangely calming to me lately, almost mesmerizing. OK, I know they’re fake, but it takes me to a meditative state fairly quickly and allows me to just slow down, relax, and be in the moment. And for now, even a simulation of something calm is welcoming.

Usually, at the end of a year, we would look back at our challenges, successes, and failures and release them all into the universe; feeling the relief or accomplishment that this year is coming to an end. But with our current COVID-19 conditions, it seems as if we’re stuck in Groundhog Day with no end in sight. Yes, we have a glimmer of hope with vaccines in our future. with a temporary sense of absolution. The day will come when we will think to ourselves that we could have tried harder, we should have called, written that letter, or drove by their home so they can see us through the window. We will wish that we would have let those on the front lines know how much we appreciate, respect, and love them.

One of my very favorite motivational speakers and influencers on my life was a man by the name of Jim Rohn. His quote here may just sum up my encouragement to you this week, “Don’t say, If I could, I would. Instead say, If I can, I will.” You can make that call, you can reach out, and you can make the difference in the life of someone who really needs to not feel lonely or alone today.

Yes, most of us have adjusted to physically distancing and wearing a mask in public. But like a kid in the back seat on a long road trip, we just want to know, “When are we gonna get there?” How long are we going to be stuck in this small container for hours on end with these same people and no elbow room? Realistically, with the pandemic, we know it won’t be soon. So how can we give each other and ourselves a bit of grace? How can we move on to more of the same?

At least with the elections (with the exception of Georgia), we know they’re over. Whether we’re celebrating or mourning the outcomes, at least we know they’re over for another couple of years. When we know something is done, we can ritualize it with a rite-of-passage, funeral, or celebration, which most of us have probably done by now with the elections. But if we’re not happy about the election outcome, how can we be at peace with “what is?”

As we’re going into 2021, knowing we’re in for many more months of the same, stuck in an unending “COVID road trip” at home, how do

we vision for a bright hopeful 2021 future?

Can my fake Christmas tree with my Star of David tree topper and TV fireplace actually help me transcend? From the Buddhist perspective, perhaps. No matter what’s going on around me, whether it be suffering or joy, if I can become one with my simulated hearth and tree and be fully present, maybe I can be elevated to a higher consciousness of acceptance of “what is.” So, even if it’s fake, if it can help me in the moment to feel more peace, I’m in.

So, if your fake Christmas tree or televised fireplace helps you live moment to moment through the end of this year, I say go for it. Better to give yourself some grace than to live miserably into oblivion.

rom her family’s locally famous light display to their traditional Christmas party — which usually includes around 75 people and even a hired Santa — Jennifer Shelton loves to go big on Christmas.

But this year, COVID-19 has led the Arvada resident to rethink her approach to the cherished holiday. The lights at her home 19275 W. 84th Place are already as bright as ever but there will be no party this December.

Instead, Shelton and her family are focused on enjoying some new, more pandemic-friendly festivities. So far, their agenda has included multiple movie nights and plenty of baking and crafting, with the family making plans to learn how to make their own Advent wreath for their Christmas table.

She’s also planning on having her mother-in-law over for a day of baking with her daughter, who has never had time to learn the mother-in-law’s recipes.

“I’m just trying to keep the spirit alive even though we can’t do some of the stuff that we used to do,” Shelton said.

But while Shelton and her family are trying to make the most of this unusual holiday season, she said it’s still hard to not be able to enjoy more social activities like parties with friends and gift exchanges. That feels particularly true at the end of a difficult year that saw Shelton’s daughter spend 10 days in the hospital and her grandmother die of COVID-19.

Still, there also positives to a slower-paced holiday season, including more opportunities to spend more time with family and pause to be thankful for all she does have.

“Normally, I’m still shopping, but this year I already did all of my shopping online so I am able to spend time with my family and enjoy the season a little bit more by sitting down and watching movies and things like that,” she said. “I usually wouldn’t be able to do that because I would be running around like a crazy person.”

A cardboard tree

Given the risk posed by COVID-19, Aleya Jean and her partner will be staying home in Golden this Christmas. However, they plan on choosing another day in the future to “designate as Christmas” and will use it to go see family when it is safe to travel again.

In the meantime, however, Jean plans to enjoy the cardboard tree she constructed with her husband.

Amazon boxes it was really easy,” Jean said. “And we didn’t have to go out and interact with people to purchase a real Christmas tree.”

A harder holiday for some

For Katie Bartlett, this Christmas will mean will mean putting on a brave face for her kids. That’s because COVID-19 has impacted her family’s income tremendously and left them behind on rent and utilities.

Still, they did some decorating inside and are planning to do the tree next.

“It is hard because as a parent you feel like a failure,” Bartlett said.

“Don’t get me wrong, we have plenty to be thankful for such as our health.

But it is still hard.”

Casey Romero, meanwhile, doesn’t know where she will be spending Christmas this year.

She and her family were hoping to drive out to South Carolina to bring her son, who is serving on a military base, home to Littleton for his first Christmas since moving away.

But the pandemic had other ideas and her son recently received word that he would not be allowed to travel more than 1,200 miles from his base as a result of increasing COVID-19 cases around the country.

“Now we are hoping to get approved to drive out there and see him maybe in a VRBO (vacation rental) with maybe socially distancing,” said Romero. “But right now we don’t really know if that will get approved,

we are just hoping.”

If that doesn’t get approved, Romero said they will plan to lie low and find a way to “celebrate from afar.”

That will be a bummer, particularly since Romero has not been able to hug her son since he left for boot camp in May. Still, “it’s not great but there are worse things, and you have to take your wins where you have them,” she said.

“I do think people need to remember that our military personnel are very lonely right now,” Romero added. “We feel we have rights to do everything and see everybody but at the end of the day there are a lot of them who don’t get to see family. We have to be grateful for what we have.”

Communities changing course

Few Front Range cities are as synonymous with Christmas as Golden.

There, December weekends typically mean big crowds of shoppers during the day that become even bigger in the evening as people cram downtown to catch a glimpse of Santa Claus when the Olde Golden Christmas parades make their way through downtown.

This year, however, the city’s holiday planners are instead orienting the festivities around resident’s homes, while nodding to another canceled favorite, the Candlelight Walk. During that event, residents would gather to go caroling down Golden’s main street, Washington Avenue, with a candle in hand.

“This year we are handing out these battery-operated commemorative candles and we are asking everyone to place one in their window and light it every night at 7 to show that unity that we have in the community, and that even though we can’t come together we are all still together,” said Nola Krajewski, the executive director of the Golden Chamber of Commerce.

The cancellation of Golden’s parade also means that local kids did get the chance to march in it with Santa.

“I think that there is so much that kids aren’t even able to do and such a shortage — you can’t even see Santa right now in a lot of places,” she said. “This is some way for them to be involved with Santa in a virtual way at least for an hour.”

Other communities are also planning their own shows of holiday togetherness amidst the separation required by the pandemic.

In Westminster, Arvada, Centennial and other communities, residents have been circulating a Facebook post asking “everyone to step out on their doorsteps to spread Christmas sprit and help Santa fly his sleigh” at 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve. “After this awful year, it would be an amazing memory for the kids and the communities,” the post reads.

“End 2020 with a bit of magic, hope and togetherness.”

Cheryl Truax-Williams is among those planning to participate.

“This is how traditions start,” she said.

Old traditions get new life

But while COVID-19 is creating new traditions, it’s also providing fuel for existing ones to grow as they take on new meaning at a time when so many are spending the holidays apart.

Three years ago, Chris Hohenstein began adding his own ornament to a growing collection that he noticed on a couple of trees along the Ralston Creek Trail near his home. This year there seem to be more ornaments than ever on the trees, which are located along the trail a couple turns west of Eldridge Street.

“It’s a wonderful hometown-type tradition that someone started in the neighborhood and everyone seems to enjoy and keep going year after year,” said Hohenstein. “And it’s just a wonderful treat to see as you are out for a walk on the trail.”

“We are here with the capacity to do more,” said Diane McClymonds, the group’s executive director. “A lot of people think there are others worse off than them, so they’re saving the program for those with more need, but we have the capacity to serve them too. If you have a neighbor, friend, or relative you think could benefit from our services, we would love to hear from them.”

Nourish provides meals regardless of clients’ ability to pay, with many paying nothing toward their meals, though Nourish invites those with means to pay up to the full cost of each meal, which is $5.

Though the group saw a bump in clientele early in the pandemic, McClymonds said their numbers have settled back about where they were before COVID-19, with about 500 people a day receiving meals across the south metro suburbs.

CARES Act funding allowed Nourish to add a once-a-week delivery of non-perishable groceries, but that funding is ending at the end of the year. McClymonds said she hopes to secure additional funding for grocery delivery through recently-announced state grants for food bank programs.

The group’s meals have also climbed in quality thanks to a partnership with the Food Exchange Resource Network, a nonprofit providing Nourish with fresh produce and meat.

“It means a lot more cooking from scratch,” McClymonds said.

“For those clients who are still making an effort, it’s still working,” McClymonds said. “But I won’t lie, it’s not the same. Our drivers have to stand way back, in the driveway perhaps, while clients talk to them through a screen door or from the porch. But even if not, our drivers are still someone coming to check on you every day. If we come back the next day and your meal is still there, we’ll figure out why and get you the help you need.”

While McClymonds said Nourish has its COVID protocols pretty well worked out by now, the group is stockpiling extra meals in its new king-size freezer in case an outbreak plays havoc with its food production. But she said missing meal days is not an option.

“We’ve got 500 people depending on us for their daily nutrition,” she said. “Shutting the doors for a couple weeks? We just can’t do it.”

Nourish is in the middle of its annual 12 Days of Giving program, which provides a dozen gifts to clients, one per service day leading up to Christmas. Gifts include greeting cards, home decorations and poinsettias.

For Lanny and Carla Arensen, a husband-and-wife volunteer driver team, delivering meals is about helping vulnerable seniors stay in the comfort of their own homes.

Start of winter high school sports pushed back Basketball season among those delayed by tightened COVID-19 restrictions

Coaches for Season B sports had been looking over their shoulders for about a month, waiting to find out if their teams would be able to play as originally scheduled.

Then, word came down Dec. 7 that due to rising COVID-19 cases in Colorado, the start of Season B would be delayed. Practices can begin Jan. 25, and competition can start Feb. 1. Season B sports include boys and girls basketball, boys and girls wrestling, girls swimming and diving, ice hockey and spirit.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment sent a communication to the Colorado High School Activities Association that the scheduled start of Season B on Jan. 4 will be pushed back and no variances will be given at this time to CHSAA. This could also mean the planned starts of Seasons C and D could also be affected.

“Obviously, it is tough news to hear that we may indeed be losing

even more games already cut down from 19 to 14 at the varsity level,” said Cherry Creek boys basketball coach Kent Dertinger. “I understand the need to push it back for safety reasons, and ultimately, I just hope the seniors will get to play a senior season, even if it is modified. We already have a sour taste in our mouths after the way last season ended for us, and we are chomping at the bit to get going again. We carry that chip on our shoulder daily and promise to leave it all out on the court this season.”

Jill Hunsaker Ryan, executive director of CDPHE, sent a letter to CHSAA Commissioner Rhonda Blanford-Green and expressed concern about holiday festivities swelling the transmission of COVID-19.

“Hospital admissions are steadily increasing, and the past six weeks have produced a significant increase in the number of deaths statewide. With the Thanksgiving holiday just behind us and the impending December holiday festivities, we are very concerned that the rate of transmission will continue to increase,” Hunsaker Ryan wrote, according to a news release issued by CHSAA. Hunsaker Ryan said there was

not enough information to determine what the cases and hospitalizations would look like in January and that Season B sports would operate under restrictions in the level on the dial of the county of the school. For counties in level red — which includes Arapahoe, Douglas, Jefferson, Denver, Adams and many other counties — that means no indoor sports are authorized.

She also said the priority is on a return to in-person learning for students and noted that Season B sports are conducted indoors, which reduces the ability to ensure social distancing.

“This in turn may further promote disease transmission at a time when we need to ensure that students and teachers are protected and that in-person learning is the highest priority,” Hunsaker Ryan wrote.

Coaches of Season B teams are left to keep looking over their shoulder and study reports to find out if there will eventually be a season.

“Having the season moved back again is hard for sure,” said Rock Canyon girls basketball coach Becky Mudd. “Basketball, and all sports, are absolutely needed right now, and we should be looking for ways to do them with safety

protocols in place. We are used to hearing over and over that sports are an integral part of the educational experience and that we are developing the whole child, and yet now the narrative is that we can’t have sports. We have to get back to school first.

“I would contend that the two are intertwined, that we need to find ways to do both. I also believe that participation in some way, even if modified, would have noticeable and measurable positive effect on student performance.”

Heritage hockey coach Jeremy Simms has adjusted his time with his players.

“It has been very difficult keeping the players motivated, but we have just needed to get creative with practices and include more fun games in practice,” he said.

“This has been a very difficult year for out teams, coaches and players. The players have continued to work hard and continued to develop even though they are not sure when or if they will be playing games.

“When I let the players know the CHSAA season was pushed back again, they were all very disappointed but decided to take it as an opportunity to keep working and get ready to play... when it does start up.”

without the tireless help of his wife, his children and family friend Mike Rasmussen.

The display is so massive that Xcel Energy wired up a second transformer on the utility pole behind the house, Kloewer said, though he wouldn’t say how much the December electric bill typically runs.

“It goes up a bit,” he said with a grin.

Melanie said life has gotten easier since the advent of LED lights, which ended her annual job of painstakingly inspecting long strands of lights for burned-out bulbs.

Why go to all the trouble?

“The smiles and the compliments,” Kloewer said. “One year a guy who was almost blind told my dad, ‘I can barely see anything anymore, but I can see your lights.’

It meant a lot to him.”

Of the visitors who thronged the Kloewer house on Dec. 9, many were seeing it for the first time, but others had been coming for years.

“It’s been tradition in my family since I was a baby,” said Megan Ford, who drove down from Lakewood with her husband Robbie and their son Thatcher, 2. “Christmas wouldn’t be the same without it.”

Kloewer said whether his kids will take over the family tradition and keep the epic displays going is yet to be seen, though he said he’s hopeful.

“Mike’s got two kids of his own now, so that motivates him, and Randy always loves helping,”

Kloewer said of his two younger children. “We’ll keep doing it as long as we can.”

Across the street, the Jones family has been building up a staggering display of their own since they moved into the house in 2012.

“I grew up going to Ron’s mom and dad’s place every Christmas,” said Robert Jones as visitors made their way between glittering displays along his sidewalk.

“Everyone in Englewood knew Mr. Kloewer’s house. When we moved in here, we almost didn’t want to decorate — how could anyone measure up to Ron? But we started, and it’s just been so much fun that we just keep growing.”

Jones travels far and wide for his job as a medical equipment installer, giving him the chance to prowl far-flung antique stores for decorations. His prize addition this year is an authentic old wooden sleigh, bought at a curio store in rural Kansas — now adorned with a life-size Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, both wearing COVID-era face masks.

Like the Kloewers, the Jones family has started collecting cash donations, which Jones said he mainly invests into more decorations.
