Centennial Airport says FAA left gaps in flight path study F Congress-mandated studies on noise effects must be completed, airport argues

Wheels started turning on a federal plan to reroute airplane traffic in the Denver metro area years ago, but after the government released more than 1,000 pages of a study on its potential effects, Centennial Airport is still urging a closer look.

“Congress has recognized that it is quite obvious that the (Federal Aviation Administration) has not sufficiently addressed, or at a minimum underestimated, the need for broad citizen participation,” said a letter from the airport’s executive director, Robert Olislagers, to the FAA. The June 5 letter came a day before the public comment period closed on the FAA’s draft of an analysis of the NextGen Denver Metroplex project, which aims to optimize arrival and departure at local airports. That includes Denver International Airport, Centennial Airport and some others.

The study, called a draft environmental assessment, looked at impacts the project could have on noise, air quality, wildlife, and historic and cultural resources.

paths is expected to have “no significant impacts” on those aspects of the Denver metro area, according to the study.

But Centennial Airport points to widespread backlash in other metro areas across the country where Metroplex plans have been implemented.

“Legal action was initiated against the FAA regarding Metroplex implementations in Phoenix, Los Angeles (southern California) and BaltimoreWashington, D.C., and more communities are considering the same,” the airport wrote. Implementation “was followed by very significant increases

in noise complaints in communities in northern California ... southern California (Los Angeles), Washington, D.C./Baltimore and Phoenix.”

The FAA contends that most proposed flight paths in the Denver area closely follow what are being flown today and that around Centennial Airport, the plan includes only two notable flight path changes.

It’s unclear how closely other cases will mirror Denver metro’s experience — the lion’s share of increased air traffic over some Phoenix areas was by jets, for example, whereas larger planes have less presence at Centennial Airport.

Planes in ‘volatile conditions’ Local officials across the south metro area have raised concern about the plan, but the FAA argues that one proposed route at issue, BRNKO, entails a tiny amount of traffic.

And planes today already travel the area the other proposed PINNR path would cover in the Denver area, according to the FAA. That’s a proposed route that travels south, roughly above Interstate 25, starting around Greeley and turning southeast over the Denver area.

The BRNKO route — pronounced “Bronco” — would take arrivals from the northeast that currently stay east of I-25 and move them farther north, joining up with PINNR near Greeley and traveling in that same corridor as flights move south.

BRNKO only entails about six flights per day on average that would be moved from an older corridor, according to the FAA. About two daily would use a nearby route that ends up over the same south metro area. Centennial Airport sees about 1,055 daily takeoffs and landings combined.

Not much is set to change, FAA says

And once BRNKO flights cross the City of Denver border into Arapahoe County, its flights would largely cover the same areas as current routes do, according to FAA maps.

But Centennial Airport argues the route will put pilots over unsafe territory: the foothills, where volatile wind conditions can be “unpredictable,” according to the letter.

“When weather or winds are not a factor, the corridor is popular with small aircraft flying in both directions, creating safety concerns as aircraft with vastly different speeds will operate in the same airspace at nearly identical altitudes,” the letter continued.

‘Important environmental info missing’ The plan is expected to have “no significant impacts” on noise, air quality, wildlife, or historic and cultural resources, according to the draft of the FAA study dated April 22.

The report does note that about 100 people in rural parts of Jefferson, Adams and Elbert counties would likely experience a noise increase of 5 decibels in areas where the average noise would usually vary between 45 and 60 decibels. Conversation in restaurants generally hovers around 60 decibels, according to a Purdue University chart. Upper-70s levels are annoyingly loud to some people, the chart said.

But that’s the extent of the notable noise changes, the report said — and

only increases of 1.5 decibels or more in areas exposed to 65 decibels and up are considered to “exceed threshold of significance,” according to the report.

Centennial Airport’s director, however, argued that the FAA didn’t consider the impact of the part of flight that occurs below 3,000 feet above ground, and that leaves unclear how much communities could be affected.

Littleton, Centennial, Cherry Hills Village, Lone Tree, Castle Rock and other nearby cities could experience notable effects, Olislagers said.

Flights “will increase over areas that have never or rarely seen overflight at lower altitudes. It is one thing when (DIA) commercial airline traffic flies over at 10,000 feet” above ground, Olislagers said. “It’s something quite

different when a business jet, inbound to Centennial Airport, comes over at 2,500 feet.”

In the letter, the airport also pushed for the FAA to complete more studies mandated by the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018, a law passed by Congress, before it puts the Metroplex plan in motion.

The recent law requires the FAA to study the agency’s “community involvement” practices regarding NextGen Metroplex projects; the effect of aircraft noise on communities; the relationship between noise and health impacts such as sleep disturbance and elevated blood pressure, as well as the effect on businesses located under certain flight paths; and whether 65 decibels and up remains an acceptable FAA standard for significant noise exposure, according to the airport’s letter.

“Some of the results of these mandated studies could be complete around the same time that the FAA plans on implementing the Denver Metroplex,” Olislagers said. The “results of these studies could have a significant impact on the Denver Metroplex, as well as the FAA’s conclusion that there is ‘no significant impact.’”

Whether the FAA must wait until the studies are complete is unclear, Olislagers added.

“We have asked the FAA to consider waiting,” Olislagers said. “We feel strongly that postponing implementation by a few months to ensure the health and welfare of residents is far more important than the need to rush to judgement on Metroplex — especially since the FAA’s own selfimposed delays on this project clearly indicate the issue is not time critical.”

Q&A with Scott Siegfried, Cherry Creek superintendent Official talks about new facility, mental health, reaching diverse kids

At the helm of one of the largest school districts in the state is Scott Siegfried, a superintendent who is pushing to “meet students where they are,” he says.

That reflects in his approach to career-technical education — not assuming every student needs college — but also in his effort to amplify the voices of students from diverse backgrounds and make sure they feel heard.

And after a challenging semester in which three high school stuSiegfried dents died by suicide in the district and another died in a shooting, Siegfried points to the addition of more mental health staff and a belief in being honest in conversations about loss.

On an optimistic horizon for the Cherry Creek School District, a new

campus for career-technical learning will open this fall for a broad range of students’ passions. That’s the district’s Innovation Campus.

“It’s for the kid who wants to be a mechanic, to the kid who wants to go to MIT,” Siegfried said.

Here’s what the superintendent had to say about the new campus, mental health, diverse perspectives and more.

Did the 2016 bond deliver as promised?

Final renovation projects will be completed this summer toward early fall. I believe we exceeded expectations in every way. We built two new schools, Infinity Middle and Altitude Elementary.

The Cherry Creek Innovation Campus is the hallmark of that bond. $100 million of it was innovation focused: How do kids need to learn different to prepare for their future?

It’s great for everyone from IB (International Baccalaureate) kids going to Colorado School of Mines, to the kid who’s going to make 60 grand out of high school on an automotive certificate. It’s got the only Federal Aviation Administrationapproved high school program in Colorado.

We’ve diversified and gone away from “everybody has to go to college.” We have to meet students where they are. I’m proud of that shift we have made in the past few years.

With the high student populations at Cherry Creek’s high schools, how can the district make sure kids don’t feel invisible?

Something we did this year, which has been an extraordinary experience for us, is that we got 15 to 20 diverse high schoolers who talked about their lived experience, and they were able to provide feedback from mental health to racial and gender issues, to community pressures, to home pressures.

SIEGFRIED Sex offender suspected of assault on girls at pool FROM PAGE 4

A registered sex offender was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting two 12-year-old girls in a pool in Centennial, according to the Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office.

Deputies arrested Aaron Jason Schupp, 26, on June 27.

He’s suspected of assaulting Schupp the girls on June 5 at an apartment complex near East County Line Road and South University Boulevard, said Deborah Sherman,

sheriff ’s office spokesperson.

A woman noticed the girls acting strangely, and she asked them questions and took a photo of Schupp before he left the scene, Sherman said. The sheriff ’s office received the photo June 5 and worked to identify him, leading to the arrest.

Schupp registered as a sex offender after an assault on another 12-year-old in Jefferson County when he was 22, Sherman said. He later moved to Centennial, Sherman said, where he lives in the area of University Boulevard and County Line Road. The girls did not know Schupp, Sherman said.

His bond is set at $250,000, Sherman said.

We culminated in a list of common threads across the district … We’re using that to put together actionable initiatives. As adults, we can’t just say, “OK, thanks.” Ryan Silva, Cherry Creek High’s principal, he’s moving forward with announcing advisories, where kids will meet on a weekly basis in a small group setting and develop specific curriculum where teachers can interact with students in a deeper way (on mental health issues and other topics relevant to the high school experience). Kids say teachers have trouble answering questions about race, LGBTQ identities, mental health — it’s not their training.

When a student loses their life, how does the district decide what to say to the community?

When you look at social media, kids are so connected. Cherry Creek, Arapahoe High School, St. Mary’s Academy, Valor Christian High School — those kids are so connected, it almost doesn’t matter what colors they put on because through parties, activities and so on, they live the same life. So when they had tragedies, our kids are devastated. When we had it, they were devastated.

I believe wholeheartedly that we have to be honest and transparent with kids and parents because what I know for a fact is, whether it’s (Cherokee Trail student) Lloyd Chavez or (students who died by suicide), kids already know the

What is the district doing to support students’ mental health?

Siegfried: We have a deep, longstanding commitment to mental health. We can evidence that by the number of employees in place. We have a full-time nurse in every building — we’re the only district in Colorado that can say that.

And that’s in addition to counselors.

It has been a difficult year, and we did have suicides, but I did add, with board support, two new directors of mental health in the spring. One is focused on clinical services, and one is focused on community partnerships. And we have six coordinators of mental health, so every high-school feeder area will have one. If there’s a kid with a high suicide risk assessment, staff can get to know them, get to know their family and get to know them over time. And if we have some continuity in working with those families and kids, that’ll be beneficial.

Smith: The coordinators also focus broadly on the mental health needs of all students.

Bringing the boogie Danceable band gets crowd on feet at summer concert

The Streets at SouthGlenn isn’t just for meandering around to shop on the weekend — a crowd that blanketed its central Commons Park area took in the energy of one of the outdoor mall’s free concerts on June 26.

Running through a list of disco, pop rock and dance-oriented songs — Earth, Wind and Fire’s “September” and Walk the Moon’s “Shut Up and Dance” among them — cover band Tunisia brought the young and old to their feet.

The free concert came as part of SouthGlenn’s Dancing in The Streets summer concert series, featuring local and regional bands on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month from June through August. The events run from 6:30-8 p.m.

Luke Weatherspoon and Jamie Shunk, decked in flashy purple outfits, pumped up crowd members, dancing with strangers and spreading their energy. The couple, of the Centennial area, go to events all over the Denver region, Weatherspoon said.

Shunk couldn’t stay in one place to be interviewed too long.

“I’ve got to entertain,” she said.

Local residents who tracked plastic usage for a week find they use more than expected

Bookkeeper Janelle Pedigo, 47, has worried about her plastic use since she was in high school. It’s not unusual to see her walking down the salad-dressing aisle in a grocery store, tapping on bottles to find the ones made of glass.

“Why do I worry?” she said. “Because that single salad-dressing bottle is going to outlast me, my daughter, her daughter, her daughter — and maybe even her daughter.”

Pedigo, who lives in Golden and works in Westminster, was one of 20 adults and teenagers who participated in an infor-

mal Colorado Community Media project to track their single-use plastic usage for a week. The project was part of a look into the local picture of how metro Denver communities are addressing single-use plastics.

After documenting each piece of plastic used — 926 pieces altogether — many found they used much more than expected. Most said the project showed them just how much they rely on plastic in their day-to-day lives.

And interviews with public health, environmental and elected officials revealed that — despite a growing focus on the issue and individual efforts in some communities and organizations — there is no cohesive effort to reduce

single-use plastic.

Plastic is everywhere — in packaging on supermarket shelves, covering products in vending machines, in coffee cups and straws and drink bottles. It holds the kids’ lunch sandwiches and carries home groceries.

The material has become a versatile, easily accessible, inexpensive product that is a substantial part of most people’s everyday lives. The environmental watchdog GreenPeace stated that 330 million metric tons of plastic — more than 661 billion pounds — are produced globally each year, with more than half being classified as single use. about how much plastic she uses in her daily life, was surprised that after a week she had collected nine plastic bottles of water, iced tea and Gatorade, along with 10 small plastic bags, three straws and 13 food wrappers.

“I realized that nearly every food product that I used had some form of plastic, which I never thought about before,” she said. “I probably use a minuscule amount of plastic compared to some other people. If every single person in the U.S. or even the world uses close to this much plastic, it’s almost an unimaginable amount.”

The issue Consider that on average one person in the U.S. uses approximately 346 plastic bottles, 500 straws and 365 plastic bags each year, according to a 2018 National Geographic report.

And 8 million tons of plastic are discarded worldwide into oceans every year, says Plastic Oceans, which works to combat plastic pollution. A pregnant sperm whale, found dead on the coast of Sardinia, Italy, in March, had nearly 50 pounds of plastic in her stomach. She was the fourth whale in 12 months to wash up onshore with ingested plastic waste.

“If current trends continue we will quadruple the amount of plastic we are producing globally by 2050,” said Harlin Savage, communications director from EcoCycle, a Boulder-based recycler dedicated to creating zero-waste communities. Savage helps lead its plastics department. “At that point, if we have done nothing, we will have more plastic by weight than fish in the ocean, which is mind-boggling when you consider how lightweight plastic is.”

The fundamental problem with plastic is that it can’t be reycled in the same way as paper and aluminum.

Very few plastics, industry experts say, are truly recyclable.

“Virtually all of the plasticIDthat we CC 2018 have ever created is still on the Earth Windows in some form because plastic is not truly biodegradable and it is difficult to recycle,” Savage said. “We have a

Most materials recovery facilities, where recyclables are sorted and prepared, are unable to recycle straws, for instance, because they are too small to be sorted, according to For a Strawless Ocean, a national campaign to eliminate the use of plastic straws.

In Denver, the city’s recycling directory instructs residents to not include straws in recycling bins, but rather to throw them out with the trash. Straws, according to Woods Hole Sea Grant, a nonprofit that works to maintain coastal and ocean resources, will sit in landfills for at least 200 years, never degrading completely.

Just 9 percent of plastic produced annually gets recycled, a 2019 report from National Geographic stated. But plastic becomes more downgraded and less functional the more it is recycled.

Unlike paper, aluminum and cardboard, plastic cannot be recycled over and over without losing its structure.

out by water treatment plants, according to a study published in the Sociey for Conservation Biology. The Inland Ocean Coalition, a program working to advocate for land-to-sea stewardship, tested Colorado rivers in 2017 and found traces of micro-plastics in Boulder Creek and the South Platte River.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, in an effort to learn how much plastic is never recycled, completed a Waste Composition of Municipal Solid Waste Disposal study in 2018, where it analyzed materials that arrived at landfills statewide.

The study reported 13.2 percent of waste brought to landfills was made up of plastics including bottles, film, bags and wraps.

“We found out that of people who live in a city or town in Colorado, 96 percent of them actually do have access to recycling,” said Wolf Kray, a recycling specialist with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Job No.: 007825 550 Page No. Environment. “So if that many people School to Name:recycling, Castle View High School have access and we still have somewhat of a lower recycling rate, it kind of leads to the question of how many people are participating in actually recycling.”

cept curbside recycling and 25 counties have drop-off recycling options.

Colorado’s recycling efforts rank low, with a 19 percent landfill diversion rate — the amount taken out from landfills to recycle — compared to the national average of 35 percent, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

What some people, places are doing For many at EcoCycle, the answer to reducing plastic use lies with avoiding plastic altogether.

“I’m not an advocate for recycling single-use plastic, because we don’t have ways to do that,” EcoCycle President Judith Wong said. “I think we should not create them in the first place, reducing it out at the source.”

Colorado is one of 10 states with a law — passed in 1993 in Colorado — that prevents local governments from restricting citizens’ use of plastic.

But some local officals and legislators are working to change that.

Susan Lontine, a Democrat who represents state House District 1 in Denver, sponsored a bill in January that would make straws available at restaurants throughout Colorado only upon customer request. The bill went to the House Committe on Energy and Environment in February, but was postponed indefinitely for an amendment to be created that would allow more local control.

‘Is that a sustainable choice and is that healthy for me?’

Those are two questions Jenny Dallman asks when confronted by plastic

“If you’re trying to become more environmentally friendly and cut back on your use,” she said, “you have to understand that pretty much everything has plastic in it.”

For more than 20 years, environmental science teacher Jenny Dallman has devoted herself to living in a way that leaves the least impact on the natural world.

After a week of being a part of an informal Colorado Community Media study that tracked 20 community members’ plastic usage, she was unable to log a single item on her list.

“I honestly don’t use plastic,” Dallman said. “When I go to the grocery store I look at the food I eat and I say to myself, ‘Is that a sustainable choice and is that healthy for me?’ Those are the two questions I ask myself. When I buy vegetables I set them in my cart — I don’t ever put them in plastic. When I purchase anything, I ask myself if I need that item that has plastic around it. I put items I buy in my shirt or carry them in my hands out of the store.”

Dallman teaches aquatic biology and environmental science at Castle View High School in Castle Rock. Her passion to preserve the environment is evident in just about every facet of her life.

She lives with her husband in an eco-friendly home in Sedalia.

The geodesic dome-shaped house is heated from solar water panels and baseboard hot water. The dome provides natural light and windows are carefully placed for passive solar energy retention. She grows vegetables — peas, carrots, onions, garlic, zucchini, cucumbers and herbs — in a pesticide-free garden, where milk jugs have found a second life protecting germinating plants.

She brings that lifestyle to her classroom, too: Hanging on the wall

Recycled licorice buckets and protein powder containers — some brought in by students and other teachers — are used for class activities. Seeds sprout in smaller containers. Large vines grow from cut-up liter soda bottles.

“I’m one of those people who if I buy something and it’s plastic, I save it … I will find a use for the plastic,” Dallman said. “I keep all single-use plastic. I would never throw it in the trash bin.”

Her environmental beliefs stem from a humble childhood in Alaska and Wisconsin. Her dad was a science teacher, her mother a nurse. They didn’t have much money and gardened and hunted for the family, which also included an older brother and younger sister.

“They both were very conscientious about picking up trash. Whenever we

went camping they would always have garbage bags on them and they would pick up other people’s trash. I learned from a very young age to be conscientious of trash and where it should go,” Dallman said. “My mom would save the big sleeve that bread would come in, and that’s what she would send us to school with our sandwiches in. My grandparensts would save wrapping paper at Christmas from year to year to reuse.”

To Dallman, the biggest issue surrounding the overuse of plastic is related to what she says is America’s materialistic society.

Her travels to Central and South America, which have included student trips to Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, Honduras, Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands, have shown her how other cultures and people generally live with much less than the average American — and with much more con-

cern for the environment, family and community.

Many in today’s society tend to buy items without thinking about how they will be disposed of, she said. “It goes into a landfill, gets buried and sometimes doesn’t decompose for hundreds or thousands of years. What people don’t understand is that putting it in a landfill is out of sight, out of mind — meaning they don’t think of it when it’s gone from their curb.”

Dallman urges her students to understand how their choices affect the Earth and not allow ignorance to be an excuse.

“Everything is connected on Earth,” she said. “And until we understand it and unless we educate about it, people won’t understand the connection with why single-use plastic can be harmful. ... We have an obligation to Earth and our future generations to take care of it appropriately.”

that believe the bill does not go far enough and from people who advocate for local control and disability advocates,” Lontine said in an email to Colorado Community Media.

Lontine believes the law must be changed to reduce plastic waste. “It takes a thousand years for plastic to decompose,” she said, “and if we don’t do something about it now we are going to be buried in it later.”

Individual efforts are sprouting up.

Across the state, towns such as Breckenridge, Boulder and Aspen are banning or setting fees on plastic bags, although no metro-area cities or counties have passed any similar legislation. More and more restaurants are beginning to follow a national trend of not giving out straws, and coffee shops like Starbucks are providing alternative resuable options to the plastic straw, lid and cup.

The Denver Museum of Nature and Science announced in April that it has eliminated its use of single-use plastics. Aluminum cans, compostable cups and plant-based materials will now be used instead of plastic.

Shocked at usage Many participants in the week-long project found that individual decisions to stop using plastic could help make a difference.

“We as individuals need to reduce what we use and make the effort to use reusable products,” said Amy Vessa, a preschool teacher assistant from Centennial. “It can be as simple

We cannot demand corporations stop producing if we as consumers are not willing to make the sacrifice first and stop using.”

Vessa, who also works as a therapeutic riding instructor for people with disabilities, realized just how much of her plastic usage is “embedded” into her work life, and that there is really no way for her to alter this.

Like Vessa and Prokuski, other participants said they were shocked at the amount of plastic used in one week.

Even those who considered themselves environmentally friendly found that using the material was ultimately unavoidable.

“What surprised me was just how much stuff comes in plastic, especially anything in the bathroom or cleaners for the kitchen,” Englewood resident Jill Bastian said. “I recycle everything. But, jeez, not one container in the bathroom didn’t have plastic.

was something plastic on it — a cap, a nozzle or a pump.”

Sidney Chong, 18, a senior at Kent Denver who used 22 plastic items during the study, a low amount compared to the average, said making a difference requires action.

“I think that it is shockingly easy to forget how much single-use plastic we consume because of the convenience the tool brings into our lives,” she said. “Many people preach ‘save the turtles’ and swear by a straw-less life, which is great. But in reality they are producing so much other waste that such positive thoughts are rendered basically useless.”

“I think people should be concerned with the amount they use because it can hurt the environment. They should find a way to make plastic friendlier.”

“We should reduce and eventually eliminate the use of single-use plastic. If more of it were recyclable or made with recycled material it would be more sustainable. But as of now, we will cover the Earth in plastic someday by continuing the same practices.”

When it comes to love stories, bibliophilia is one for the books

have books on shelves in two rooms that I will never read from cover to cover again. I keep them because they are some of my dearest friends.

QUIET What’s on someone’s bookshelves DESPERATION tells a lot about them, unless they’ve gone out and bought best sellers just to look good; but I guess that tells something about them too.

This is a tribute to books. Hardcovers and paperbacks only.

Craig Marshall I have mentioned my childhood in Ann Smith Arbor, Michigan. It’s where a lot of things happened for the first time, including books.

In the summer when I was between third grade and fourth grade, a little bookmobile came to Burns Park every two weeks, parked in the street, and opened its doors. I don’t know how many books were in it; maybe fewer than what I have on my shelves right now.

I was issued my first identification card ever, and then I looked at all of the covers, and tried my best to make the big decision.

I don’t think I owned a single book until I was in the fifth grade. Whenever I was asked what I wanted for my birthday, I said gloves and bats and balls, not books.

The bookmobile had a couple of books about a detective that a brainy kid named Charles Waldrop told me about. Thanks, Charles.

The detective’s name was Sherlock

Holmes.

The first book I checked out was “The Hound of the Baskervilles.”

Since then, I have read all of the books and short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, and I own nine of the 14 Basil Rathbone-Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes films that were made between 1939 and 1946.

Obviously, that was more than one a year. The quality of the writing and filming, however, is high, and Rathbone’s Holmes has never been surpassed.

My favorite Holmes short story is “The Red-Headed League,” and my favorite Holmes book is my first, “The Hound of the Baskervilles,” partly, I’m sure, because it was my first.

I have all of my nonfiction here in my office, and all of my fiction on shelves in the guest room.

I’ve seen libraries in homes in magazines and movies that I envy, and I’m not even close to those. But when I walk into my small office, and see all of my “friends,” I am in a very special part of the house.

Perhaps my favorites in this room are the biographies and autobiographies. In the guest room, I have a row of Dickens and a row of Doyle, and many of the books I was assigned in college that might have contributed to my disposition. It doesn’t take long to read “The Stranger” by Camus, but it has lasted a lifetime.

I have a book titled “Groucho’s Letters,” and that’s exactly what it is. There’s Dorothy Parker and her contemporary, Fran Lebowitz.

hange happens. And as it has been said before: “Change happens, and it will happen again.” And when we are the ones making the changes, it can be incredibly thrilling and exciting as we prepare mentally and emotionally for those changes. A new start, a new challenge, or a new path in life can really be inspiring.

And as inspiring as beginning something new can be, it can also bring with it a healthy dose of fear. We are excited, yet we are nervous at the same WINNING time. If you have WORDS decided to make a change or new start, you know what I am talking about. In the end, whether we are absolutely positive and going forward with confidence in our new start, or we are terrified, the change is typically Michael Norton better than we expected and just what we needed.

So what do we do about an unexpected change? Some unexpected changes completely catch us off guard, others we may have expected were coming, and for some unexpected changes, when they happen, we know we should have been the ones who made the change or the decision in the first place. We waited it out too long, and

before we knew it, someone had made the change or decision for us.

When an unexpected change happens that is extremely positive, we tend to become extremely excited and optimistic about what that change could mean. Maybe it’s a job promotion with a higher income, or perhaps it’s finding out we are about to have another grandchild. Maybe we came into an inheritance or won the lottery and our financial future just became a little easier. So many good and positive unexpected changes await us all.

It’s those negative unexpected changes that always seem to feel like a gut punch. These are the kinds of changes that can cause us stress, can destroy our self-confidence, leave us feeling down and lost. An unexpected loss of employment, a diagnosis of an illness, a traumatic injury, the sudden end of a relationship, or an immediate financial hardship. Any of these can bring the strongest of people and families down. Or it can be just the call to action needed to accept the change or deal with the change on our own terms.

If it’s an illness we find the right doctor and fight it. If it’s a job loss, we immediately work through our network to start interviewing, learn a new skill, or start something completely different. When we experience

Drivers can cooperate to make roadways civil

s you’re heading out for Fourth of July, summer vacations, or just around town, you’re going to run into (hopefully, not literally) other cars on the road. Some of us have been in Colorado for years and understand the culture of driving in Colorado — not just the best roadways to get around potholes, but the “going-with-the- GUEST flow” behaviors of COLUMN most of our drivers historically. For those who are new to the area, or who need a refresher of how to “fit in” and make your driving experience here optimal, here are a few tips you never knew Linda Newell you needed.

Yes, the Colorado driving experience is actually getting worse.

• From 2013 to 2016, there was a 40% increase in the number of drivers involved in fatal crashes in Colorado.

• Although fortunately, alcohol DUI driving is down overall (possibly partially due to our recent legislative crackdowns), the number of drivers testing positive for marijuana use went up 145% in the same period.

• National statistics now show that

per capita, Colorado is second in the nation for fatalities due to road rage and aggressive behaviors of tailgating, speeding, or weaving in and out of traffic.

Why, and what can we do about it?

True to form, Colorado long-timers blame the newcomers. The newcomers blame the “too-courteous” or “takingtheir-time” drivers here. Either way, just like our neighborhoods and workplaces, we’ve got to also get along on the road. There’s a culture clash of driving behaviors that needs to be blended for our safety, stress and sanity.

Here are some suggestions for remembering that Colorado civility is a thing, and especially necessary while driving.

• Allowing drivers into the lane in front of you (rather than speeding up), waving thank you when you’re allowed in, or merely using your turning signal can help all of our stress levels. Using the zipper method as you’re merging is helpful for the traffic flow and driver stress. And how could it hurt you — maybe arrive three minutes slower to your destination?

• Remember the Move Over Law here. It is required by law to move into the next lane, or if you can’t, to slow down significantly when approaching an emergency situation on the side of the road — tow trucks, workers, pullovers, tire changes …

• Slow down in inclement weather — drivers respond to our crazy Colorado weather in various ways, but almost always (with the exception of an occasional overly confident SUV driver), we slow down a bit with heavy rains or snow. Most employers or family members understand our weather unpredictability and would rather have you show up late rather than not at all.

• It is much safer and less stressful for everyone to stay with the flow of traffic without tailgating or impeding steady speeds.

• Crosswalks matter in Colorado. Be extra cautious and pause for pedestrians and bicyclists who rely on the safety zone of the crosswalk.

• Prevent road rage — breathe or calm yourself down, if you need to, prior to and while driving. Enjoy the beautiful Colorado scenery and be grateful for it on your drive. Just taking a moment of gratitude (about anything) or a few big breaths can significantly lower your heart rate, stress

and anger levels, which contribute to aggressive driving. Remember your drive is not a competitive race to beat or outsmart the driver next to you.

This all boils down to our Colorado culture of civility and compassion that many of us relish. Although we have a 2,000-pound machine around us, we are still humans interacting with each other, all of whom deserve respect and kindness. And this contributes to our life safety. As a chaplain, I have seen far too many injuries and deaths due to preventable driving behaviors. Please join in whether you do so for your safety or others’. It may just save someone’s life.

CBD unregulated, but vendors undaunted Business grows for sellers of cannabis extract

T

he sign in front of his business is subtle, yet Todd Muck said it can scare people off who are wary of the threeletter abbreviation and its association to the newest extension of the cannabis industry: CBD. Muck is the CEO of Cannabis Bioscience Development in Franktown, a small, second-floor office selling products containing various combinations of cannabinoids purported to have medicinal properties. Cannabinoids are one class of chemical compounds in cells that alter neurotransmitter release in the brain.

Cannabidiol, known better by its abbreviated name CBD — not to be confused with the name of Muck’s storefront — is the most present of the 113 cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. Combined with different concentrations of cannabinoids, the oil can be an ingredient for lotion, tincture, body wash, bath bombs, candy, dog treats and numerous other products — all with the claim it can help stop muscle and joint pain, promote muscle relaxation and relieve anxiety, among other things.

Muck, a Nebraska transplant, has bull-riding friends who swear by the oil’s ability to relax years-old pains.

Muck has arthritis, which he said has improved since applying a CBD salve to his hands daily.

Skeptics often point to the possibility of a placebo effect. Muck will then talk about his 14-year-old border collie, which after a regular dosage of CBD, Muck said, “acts like a puppy again.”

“All he knows,” Muck said, “is it’s a treat that makes him feel better.”

CBD is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. However, the FDA has taken notice of its surge in popularity and its alleged health benefits. Now through July 16, the FDA is requesting comment through a public docket to answer questions people have so far. On May 31 the FDA held a hearing to discuss the product.

Most of Muck’s customers are specifically looking for an alternative to marijuana. Though Muck’s products contain, by law, less than 0.3% THC, the main psychoactive chemical in marijuana, the relation and confusion between CBD and THC is enough to keep skittish potential consumers at bay.

Many of Muck’s customers, he said, come to him having been burned before by some products, while others have worked. This dilemma is commonplace for CBD retailers.

Muck can only provide anecdotal evidence on whether his products work. He said he provides test results from each of his products from a third party, which he believes adds cred-

WHAT THE FDA IS DOING On its website, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which does not regulate CBD, recently posted an overview of its approach to the substance. The webpage also notes that some vendors make misleading or unproven claims about CBD’s effectiveness.

But that’s not the case for every vendor. From consumers’ perspective, there’s no telling what is legitimate.

The FDA says that should it decide to regulate the product, it will likely be easier to differentiate between real and scam products, and the medicinal value of each product.

As an unregulated industry, there is no formal testing required or benchmark to determine one CBD product from another. Some shop owners will have their products tested by a third

party, but scientific proof of the product’s contents is not required.

Given that CBD science is limited, those who sell it must be careful not to allude to it having proven health benefits.

“That’s the one thing we’re careful of, is we’re not telling people ‘this is going to work for you,’” said Rick Morgan, president and manager of Total Beverage, a liquor store in Thornton and Westminster that recently began selling CBD products. “For the most part, our staff just says: ‘This is what

we carry. We don’t know anything about what it can and can’t do. There aren’t studies. If you need more information, the internet is your best spot.’

We’re not pushing people on it. We’re more just trying to answer questions.”

‘One more thing’ Retail stores specializing in CBD products, like Muck’s, are popping up in greater numbers since the start of the year. Colorado has been a leader in the CBD industry for a few years, but it wasn’t until the beginning of this year that CBD became more easily transported throughout the United States.

In June 2018, the FDA approved Epidiolex, a prescription CBD solution used for the treatment of seizures.

In December, Congress passed the 2018 Farm Bill, legalizing the extraction of CBD oil from hemp products federally. King Soopers recently announced it would be carrying CBD products in some of its stores.

According to Statista, a consumer data website, the CBD industry generated $512.7 million in nationwide revenue last year. It is projected to generate $813.2 million in 2019 and $1.8 billion by 2022.

Morgan said he had considered putting the product on his company’s shelves for at least two years before deciding to give CBD its own shelf, in place of where the sake and vermouth used to be.

Arapahoe County fair boasts new programming Mexican rodeo, butterfly festival among new offerings STAFF REPORT

A Mexican rodeo, a butterfly festival and the Home Brew and Food Festival are among the new programs debuting this year at the Arapahoe County Fair.

More than 22,500 visitors attend the annual fair, which has been presented for 113 years. This year’s fair will be July 25-28 at the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds and Park, 25690 E. Quincy Ave., Aurora.

The Mexican rodeo, also known as a charreada, celebrates cowboy pageantry with colorful costumes, lively music, dancers, and horsemanship skills. Mexican rodeo events include bull riding, horse and steer roping, bareback riding, and trick roping.

Spectators can also enjoy a performance from world-class entertainers Banda la Revuelta.

“We’re thrilled to honor the Hispanic culture in our community with a charreada as part of this year’s Arapahoe County Fair,” Matt Bixen-

South Suburban issues fitness challenge Jammin’ program encourages those 10 and older to get in shape STAFF REPORT

Residents of the South Suburban Parks and Recreation District ages 10 and older are being encouraged to get fit this month by participating in the district’s Jammin’ program.

Participants pick up a card from a fitness staff member or at the front desk at any South Suburban recreation center. Each time a fitness class or personal training session is completed, the instructor or personal trainer will stamp or initial the card.

Each card requires five signatures or stamps.

Completed cards can be dropped off at the front desk of any recreation center and will be entered into a drawing for prizes.

To fill up a card even faster, post or tag South Suburban Parks and Recreation on Facebook or Instagram and receive five extra initials, or one drawing entry. Participants are also encouraged to tag South Suburban during classes.

Each comment made on a South Suburban Fitness Friday post on Facebook will earn a drawing entry.

“We kind of like to be the person pushing the line,” Morgan said. “It kind of seems like right after we got into that I’ve heard of more and more places that are carrying it.”

There are a myriad of ways to get CBD, including a number of add-ons some stores provide in their products.

You can choose to have a spritz of CBD with your latte or mixed into a superfood smoothie. On certain shelves you can buy CBD popcorn, chewing gum, vape oil and CBD-infused water.

Total Beverage introduced CBD products to its line in February. On half of one wall of an aisle, CBD products, ranging from tincture to salves, line the shelves. So far, the products are selling well, according to Morgan.

And, if it continues, he foresees making even more room for the product.

“Most people seem to like it so far.

They’re already here buying other stuff so it’s one more thing we can offer them,” Morgan said. “It’s still a really small piece of our business, but it’s definitely growing.”

Does it work?

CBD is legal to sell in all but five states in the nation if it contains less than 0.3% THC. There are different spectrums of CBD found in a product that is used for different purposes.

He said CBD can be an effective treatment for a variety of ailments.

Wilder said a high dose of CBD can counteract feelings of being “too high” off THC and is often administered for people who ingest too much THC through overconsumption of marijuana edibles.

“It’s not necessarily that more is better. There’s a balance about it,” Wilder said about CBD. “If you use it at low doses, the body tends to make more receptors for it so it has more of an effect, and you can do that in an ongoing basis. If you do that at a high dose you develop a tolerance … you want to try and hit that sweet spot somewhere in between.”

Muck answers questions from his most skeptical customers with stories

of friends whose vision had improved or had pain controlled using CBD. Prepared with test results of his product’s contents, Muck is confident it works.

Morgan is too, though he doesn’t use it himself. His wife does, and it’s enough to make a believer out of him.

Taylor Hecker, executive assistant for Nature’s Best CBD in Littleton, said the product speaks for itself.

“I’m blessed to be in this industry.

It’s an awesome plant,” Hecker said.

“I’ve had customers come to me crying because they’re in so much pain.

Then they call us a week later crying because they feel better.”

Too often, Muck said, people will come back reporting mixed results from trying CBD. A lot of people can get duped into buying coconut oil or vegetable oil instead from other stores, he said.

“There need to be a lot more studies done,” he said. “But the studies so far have shown overwhelmingly positive effects.”

Julie Nen, who visited Nature’s Best June 24, peppered the sales representative with questions. She had back pain and mixed experiences with using CBD in the past. Yet, here she was again, testing out the powers of the oil. Following one lengthy explanation after another, Nen, palms on the edge of the glass, sighed and said, “Maybe I should just smoke some weed.”

The tincture edible forms of CBD are advertised to not cause any side effects either, other than some nausea if overconsumed, by just about every CBD retailer.

The FDA has said it needs to look at the side effects of the chemical, using

Epidiolex as a yardstick for which to measure the chemical’s potential for regulation. One of those side effects the FDA is exploring is whether CBD can have a potentially harmful effect on the liver.

What’s next?

Muck tends to use the future tense to describe the CBD industry’s promise. It’s going to be big; It’s going to be popular. That’s all contingent, of course, on a widely hoped-for step for the industry: being regulated by the FDA. Wilder agrees there’s a “growing momentum.”

“The issue that raises in turn is the capitalization of cannabis … putting cannabis into a capitalist marketplace so that the processes of industrialization are applied to it, with both the positive and negative effects,” Wilder said.

For now, CBD store owners rely on consumer feedback. Many stores provide no way of knowing how much CBD — if any — a consumer is buying. Salespeople can’t legally make claims about the medicinal properties of the product, but that doesn’t keep some from telling inspirational stories of friends who replaced all their pain medication with CBD products.

“The stigma has been put in on an emotional level over the decades — the ‘devil drug’ and all these visceral things. And the fact that it hasn’t been legalized nationally yet lingers over it — that it’s associated with stoners and hippies and all this,” Wilder said.

“It’s hard to change basic world views.

It takes time.”

Q&A with Thomas Pelz Centennial student wins statewide stock market competition

Thomas Pelz, a seventh-grader from Centennial, took first place in his age group in a statewide competition called the Stock Market Experience.

Thomas Pelz took a risk, and it paid off.

The seventhgrader from Centennial took first place among middleschoolers, and fourth place overall, in a statewide competition called the Stock Market Experience.

“It’s like real stocks but fake money, but it’s based on what happens in the real stock market,” Pelz said of the competition, in which students see who can most successfully invest.

Pelz, a student at Aspen Academy, a private school in Greenwood Village, had entered the contest a few times in past years before achieving this year’s high mark. The contest is put on by Economic Literacy Colorado, a nonprofit that educates about econom-

Pelz’s friend and fellow Aspen Academy student Beckham Pougnet-Green took home second place among middle-schoolers — and sixth place overall — in the competition this spring.

The school, which aims to equip students with skills to allow them to live responsible and self-reliant financial lives, congratulated them in a news release.

“We couldn’t be more

pleased for Thomas and Beckham to achieve first and second place in this competition and gain insights from investing while still in middle school,” said Kristina Scala, founder of Aspen Academy, in the release.

“They demonstrate the education of consequence that is experienced by Aspen Academy students.”

Pelz took time to reflect on the competition — here’s what he had to say. Responses

were lightly edited for clarity.

How did you get into the contest?

It was from my school that I heard about it. We’ve been doing it for a few years now. It was my third or fourth time.

Middle-schoolers and highschoolers compete.

You’re given a certain amount of time, about six weeks, where you can buy or sell stocks. You’re given $100,000 in a virtual stock market.

What started your passion for finances?

My dad, his job; he wrote books on finance and trading.

We have a morning class in our school that teaches us about money, but not about trading stocks or things like that.

What was the biggest challenge for you in the competition?

Telling if one stock was going to do bad or good — you just had to basically guess a lot of the time.

In previous years, I just bought normal stocks and never really risked my money.

I usually placed like top three in my school.

This year, at first, I bet on

popular things, but then I was losing a lot of money, so I decided to risk it all and put all my money in Bitcoin, and that got me a lot of money.

What did it mean for you to win?

I was expecting to make a lot of money, but I never thought I would. I woke up that morning and checked my computer, and I was really excited. It means that I can be the best at what I do if I put my mind to it.

It was $100 that I won. I’m going to put it in my bank account.

Why is it important for young people to know about stocks?

It teaches you a lot about the world and about how markets work.

What are you looking to do as a career?

I don’t know yet. I like math a lot. Yeah, I see myself being involved in finance in the future.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like to play saxophone, swim in my neighborhood pool and play games on my computer.

Studies explore hazards of processed foods Complex interactions of body, products eyed by researchers

Chips, soda and frozen pizzas tend to be full of salt, sugar and fat, but now scientists are trying to understand if there’s something else about such processed foods that might be bad for us.

Already, the spread of cheap, packaged foods has been linked to rising obesity rates around the world. Yet advice to limit processed foods can seem unhelpful, given how convenient they are and the growing array of products that fall into the category.

While three recent studies offer more clues on how our increasingly industrialized food supply may be affecting our health, they also underscore how difficult nutrition science and advice can be. Here’s what they say.

What does ‘processed’ mean?

Whether it’s curing, freezing, milling or pasteurization, nearly all foods undergo some type of processing.

Even though processing itself doesn’t automatically make food unhealthy, “processed foods” is generally a negative term.

To more precisely identify the processed foods of most concern, scientists

came up with a system that groups foods into four categories. It’s far from perfect, but the system says highly processed foods are made mostly of industrialized ingredients and additives, with little to no intact whole foods.

Sodas, packaged cookies, instant noodles and chicken nuggets are some examples of highly processed foods.

But also included are products that can seem wholesome, like breakfast cereals, energy bars and some yogurts.

What’s wrong with processed foods?

Cheap packaged foods are everywhere including checkout lines, gas stations and vending machines, and a very small four-week clinical trial might deepen our understanding of why that’s likely fueling obesity rates.

Researchers at the National Institutes of Health found people ate an average of 500 extra calories a day when fed mostly processed foods, compared with when the same people were fed minimally processed foods. That’s even though researchers tried to match the meals for nutrients like fat, fiber and sugar.

The 20 participants were allowed to eat as much or as little as they wanted, and were checked into a clinic so their health and behavior could be monitored.

That’s not all the bad news.

In another study based on questionnaires, researchers in France found people who ate more processed foods were more likely to have heart disease.

A similar study in Spain found eating more processed foods was linked to a higher risk of death in general.

What is it about processed foods?

Beyond the fact they taste really good, there might other reasons why it’s so hard to stop eating foods like cheese puffs and ice cream.

When fed minimally processed foods, people in the clinical trial produced more of a hormone that suppresses appetite, and less of a hormone that causes hunger. The reason for the biological reaction isn’t clear. Another finding: People ate processed foods faster.

“Those foods tend to be softer and easier to chew and swallow,” said Kevin Hall, a researcher at the National Institutes of Health who led the study.

Hall noted the source of nutrients might make a difference. Fibers from whole fruits and vegetables, for instance, may be better for making people feel full than the types of fiber added to packaged foods such as cookies, yogurt and even soda.

For the French study, author Mathilde Touvier also noted the largely unexamined effects of the “cocktail” of additives used to make the various processed foods we eat.

All three studies come with big caveats. The U.S. study was tiny and individual behavior varied widely: Some ate about the same amount of calories on both diets, and others ate far more on the processed diet.

Meals in the two diets were rated as being similarly pleasant, but Hall noted it’s possible participants were saying what they thought they should. The

processed food diet included foods like salted nuts and whole milk, compared with unsalted nuts and lower-fat milk for the unprocessed diet.

With the French and Spanish studies, there could be other habits and environmental factors that explain the differences in health risks. The studies also didn’t reflect the broader population. In the Spanish study, participants were college graduates and relatively younger.

And though processed food was tied to a greater risk of death, the total number of deaths was still relatively small.

What should you eat?

Even without the latest studies, advice to limit processed foods probably makes sense to most people. Minimally processed foods tend to be richer in nutrients and more difficult to overeat, since they’re not as widely available and convenient.

Still, following that advice can be hard, especially if for people with limited time and money to spend on food.

“What frustrates me is when the message is, `Change the way you eat,’ without thinking about why people eat the way they eat,” said Sarah Bowen, a professor who studies food and inequality at North Carolina State University.

Another challenge is the broad spectrum of processed foods, and distinguishing which ones might be better or worse as companies continually reengineer products to make them seem more wholesome. So while the newest studies may give us more reasons to avoid industrialized foods, they also underscore the difficulty of coming up with solutions.

More than 2,000 lavender plants will perfume the air at Denver Botanic Gardens Chatfield Farms on July 20, when they are especially celebrated with what is planned to be an annual event — the Lavender Festival. Loved for hundreds of years for its fragrance, lavender has historically been grown in Provence, France, where fields of it thrive in bright sunshine.

In recent years, Colorado growers — and others in the West — have discovered that lavender responds happily to our dry, sunny days and cool nights, and it is becoming a significant alternate cash crop for some farmers.

Palisade, home to those luscious Colorado peaches, is also experiencing a surge in lavender culture.

We learned from a Colorado Public Radio broadcast from Grand Junction recently that Colorado State University agriculturalists have reached out to area farmers as they expand into lavender culture.

And that each variety has a distinct fragrance!

It’s therefore an especially appropriate plant for Denver Botanic Gardens Chatfield Farms to feature as the property, once a farm, develops into a showplace for plants that will also work well for the local home gardener.

The 750-acre property southwest of Littleton offers both formal gardens and a natural area along Deer Creek — the water source that drew the original farmer to the site. (Longtime residents may remember it as Chatfield Arboretum, but the Farms name is now the established one.)

There will be sachets, of course and creams, body butters and other skin care products, offered by local artisans.

And for those who want to dig deeper, there will be a session called “AntiAging Lavender Herbal Skincare” ($53 non-member, $48 member), which will give the participant products to carry along home, with recipes from 10 a.m. to noon. Register ahead for this.

And, looking around the gardens will offer ideas on how to incorporate lavender plants into home flower beds as well, where they will grow and flower happily year after year. The grayish

leaves and blue/purple blooms blend really well into beds of mixed flowers, as well as reliably returning each year, with a bit of trimming and grooming.

Just try to avoid transplanting them once established — they don’t adjust well to being dug out and moved.

While at the venue for the Lavender Festival, visitors can enjoy touring the historic Hildebrand House and other farm buildings, as well as the old school house that was rescued from what is now the bottom of Chatfield Reservoir.

A special dye garden, sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Handweavers, is also located here and one can learn about this traditional craft at a future class, if interested. (We have enjoyed giving hand-dyed fabrics as gifts after purchase from the Handweavers’ annual fall holiday sale in Englewood.)

Also of interest: “One Fell Swoop,” the “Stickwork” sculpture installed this spring, designed by Patrick Dougherty and built from locally harvested saplings of willow, chokecherry and other trees. Kids and their adults will enjoy wandering into this curvy structure. It will remain in place until it deteriorates naturally, Dougherty said. He has created more than 300 of these distinctive pieces internationally.
