People lined up to eat “burgers for breakfast” as the famed fast food chain In-N-Out Burger opened its newest Colorado location in Lone Tree, near Park Meadows mall.

The restaurant, located at 9171 Westview Road, began serving food around 8:30 a.m. during In-N-Out’s Feb. 22 grand opening.

Although the restaurant did not allow dine-in during its grand opening, the In-N-Out in Lone Tree was open for carry-out orders as well as drive thru.

Cherry Creek School District plans to hold in-person graduation ceremonies in early June, according to a district announcement online.

“After all (seniors) have been through during the COVID-19 pandemic, the district is delighted to be able to mark this important milestone in their lives,” the district’s announcement said.

The ceremonies will take place at the Stutler Bowl stadium at Cherry Creek High School, located at 4700 S. Yosemite St. in Greenwood Village.

Regarding coronavirus precautions, all health and safety protocols required at the time will be followed, the district’s announcement said.

That will likely include masks or face coverings, a limited number of guests per graduate and physically distanced seating, the announcement added.

To accommodate other family and friends, all of the ceremonies will be livestreamed.

The plans may be altered based on health and safety guidance, the announcement said.

Pushing through cancer treatment to reach ‘1-million-meter’ fitness goal Longtime survivor

I live in Aurora, borderline Centennial. I am 46. I survived my first time of stage 4 breast cancer over 15 years ago, in 2005.

In July 2020, I was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer. I had to do medical scans and testing to determine the right treatment — I was told that my cancer was hormone-related. Next step was to get a hysterectomy surgery to stop me from producing hormones.

After my recovery from the hysterectomy surgery, where they also removed my ovaries, it was time to start my cancer treatment. But at this point, the doctor told me they discovered cancer in the ovaries that were removed. My new diagnosis is now stage 4 metastatic cancer. This is when the cancer has spread from the primary cancer.

Rowing 1 million meters

Once you have kids, as women, we gain a lot of weight. My husband and I have three kids. Plus, after cancer the first time, my (goal) was to be healthy …

Exercising makes me feel strong, healthy and cancerfree rather than a cancer patient.

I’ve been at Row House gym (in east Centennial) for over a year since they first opened up.

Row House tracks your rowing goals by milestones (up to) a million meters rowed. (Rowing is an exercise that mimics the motion of rowing a boat.)

The gym hosted a “Resolve 2 Row” challenge last January, which my husband and I joined … we heard it was against all Row House locations throughout the states.

From August 2019, when Row House opened, to November 2020 — and minus the closure from the COVID-19 pandemic and surgery recovery time — it took me less than a year to reach my million meters at the same Row House location.

Positivity attracts

Life can be hard, but surround yourself with positive people. Don’t isolate yourself — make friends. Friendship is hiding everywhere.

You just have to go out and find it.

‘Not the end’

Everything is all about your mental mindset. People hear “cancer,” and that’s

all they focus on and forget about how they were living before the diagnosis. Don’t let cancer define you! Don’t let cancer win!

During my first cancer 16 years ago, it was hard. Then I had convinced myself that I couldn’t go through it a second time around. Here I am going through it again.

This time, it’s different for me … I have a lot of support from my community and friends local, over social media and afar.

I’ve lost my mom through cancer, along with family and friends. On top of my battle with cancer, my dad is undergoing treatment just as I am. Cancer is not the end. The end is if you let cancer win.

Be supportive to those around you — you never know what they are going through because it never really shows on the outside because some hide it well.

Live smart and most importantly healthy, and be kind. Lose the hate because it’s not worth the time and effort.

Libraries expand hours as restrictions wind down Castlewood Library to hold virtual tour of renovations on evening of March 11

After reopening for in-person services by appointment briefly in the fall — then having to close again in November due to the state’s “COVID-19 dial” restrictions tightening in Arapahoe County — the Arapahoe Libraries district is open again and expanding its hours.

Near the start of the pandemic’s recorded spread in Colorado, all Arapahoe Libraries locations closed last March as coronavirus precautions began to take hold across Colorado.

Arapahoe Libraries reopened for in-person, “library by appointment” services shortly last fall before an uptick in COVID-19 cases in the area, according to Michelle Cingrani, the district’s spokeswoman. After the closure, patrons still had access to the district’s “Park and Pickup” service as well as home and mail delivery for holds. On Jan. 19, libraries reopened for in-person services with cleaning breaks every 90 minutes.

During those closures for cleaning, patrons needed to vacate the library buildings, but starting Feb. 22, those intermittent closures were eliminated, Cingrani said.

Now, libraries in the district are open continuously from noon to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, except for Kelver and Davies libraries, which are open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 pm. Staff will continue to clean high-touch services throughout the day without closing. “High-touch surfaces” is a term for things people touch often, such as rails or tables.

“In addition to the elimination of the cleaning breaks … we hope to expand library hours later this spring,” Cingrani said.

Arapahoe Libraries serves municipalities such as Centennial, Bow Mar, Cherry Hills Village, Glendale, Greenwood Village and Sheridan, along with unincorporated areas of Arapahoe County and the rural areas of Byers and Deer Trail. The remodel was planned to feature an updated space with natural light, increased accessibility to library materials, an enclosed children’s area, a larger “makerspace,” a lounge area with coffee vending, improved traffic flow in the parking lot and a driver-side book drop.

Makerspaces are “workshops dedicated to hands-on learning and creating for all ages” with “a wide variety of cutting-edge and traditional equipment and tools, as well as classes and programs for guided exploration,” according to the district’s website.

Castlewood reopened when the district’s libraries reopened briefly last fall and is now open for in-person services again, Cingrani said.

An official “unveiling and virtual tour” of the renovations and updates at Castlewood Library will take place 6 p.m. March 11 via the Zoom videoconferencing platform. See the Arapahoe Libraries website for more information.

New self-service lockers The district will offer a new way to pick up holds via self-service lockers that will be installed at libraries later this spring or early summer, Cingrani said.

The self-service holds lockers will be available for patrons to access 24/7 — even outside of library hours — and are completely new to Arapahoe Libraries.

Recording studios, ‘makerspaces’ still closed Outside of pandemic restrictions, the district usually offers the use of musical instruments and other equipment from the libraries’ audio-recording studios.

Studios, makerspaces and equipment are not yet available for patron use, Cingrani said.

“However, the next phases of reopening should include updates about these services in the coming months,” she added.

Footage, ex-girlfriend point to gas station shooting suspect Samuel Birch accused of killing Mauricio Omar Perez, 24, in robbery

Evidence suggests that 31-yearold Samuel Birch committed the fatal shooting of a gas station clerk in a robbery the night of Nov. 26, an Arapahoe County judge ruled after a hearing that included surveillance clips from the crime scene.

“The court not only finds that there is direct evidence that Birch committed murder in the first degree, both (on) his own admissions of the aggravated robbery and the shooting,” Judge Ryan Stuart of the Arapahoe County District Court said. There is also “the direct evidence of video of the perpetrator committing the murder and somebody who knows Birch well, intimately, identifying that person as Birch and his voice,” Stuart added.

Birch sat for a preliminary hearing that was split between Feb. 11 and Feb. 18. In a preliminary hearing, a court decides whether there is enough evidence to take the case to trial — it doesn’t decide whether a suspect is guilty.

Birch is accused of walking into the convenience store at 8263 S.

Quebec St. in Centennial — near East County Line Road, just north of Highlands Ranch — and asking for cigarettes and then committing a robbery, shooting the clerk in the process.

Surveillance from the convenience store showed a man who prosecutors say is Birch entering the store and appearing to ask for “10 of those” — likely referring to cigarette packages — and then asking for “all of it.” The clerk can then be heard yelling in pain.

A bell rings as the shooter appears to leave. Eventually, a bell rings again, indicating a customer arrived, and the clerk appears to say he’s been shot.

The court limited the number of people allowed in the courtroom due to coronavirus concerns, but the audio of the recordings could be heard over the videoconferencing program the court used for online viewing.

According to information released previously by the Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office, surveillance video showed that the suspect pointed a handgun at the clerk, who put cigarettes and money from the cash register in a shopping bag. When the clerk handed the suspect the bag, the suspect shot him, according to the sheriff ’s office.

The clerk died after sustaining a gunshot wound to the left abdomen. He was identified as Mauricio Omar Perez, 24, according to

Contacted for Douglas incident Birch was arrested for a separate incident Dec. 7 after Douglas County sheriff ’s deputies pursued him after a hit-and-run crash, according to testimony in the preliminary hearing.

Once deputies made contact, Birch said he wanted to smoke a cigarette because “he was going away for a very long time,” an Arapahoe County sheriff ’s investigator said at the court hearing.

Birch’s comment about going to prison for a long time suggested he could be guilty of another crime, the investigator said during the hearing.

Birch was arrested Dec. 11 in connection with the robbery and shooting.

The Arapahoe sheriff ’s investigator spoke with a woman on Dec. 11 who identified Birch as her ex-boyfriend. She had seen a photograph of a sweatshirt that she identified as Birch’s, likely from what she saw in a news story about the gas station robbery, the investigator said. The woman told authorities Birch stays with her in her apartment and that he had left “for quite some time” during the time frame of when the two robberies occurred, the investigator said.

At some point in the weeks after the robberies, Birch woke her up in bed and showed her cash, telling her he had robbed a gas station, the investigator said.

Birch said he had to shoot at the clerk because the clerk also had a weapon, the investigator said. It did not appear that the clerk had a gun, according to the investigator.

The woman said Birch still had the sweatshirt that surveillance footage caught the shooter wearing, which read, “No pain, no Jane,” according to the investigator. A plaid shirt and shoes the woman alleged Birch to have been wearing had been burned in the

fireplace of their apartment, the investigator said. The suspect was described previously as wearing a black-and-white plaid shirt, according to the sheriff ’s office.

The investigator played the woman an audio recording of the incident at the first gas station on Quebec Street. When the suspect was heard first speaking to the clerk on the recording, the woman became “very emotional” and said the suspect was Birch, the investigator said.

Sweatshirt, ammo at issue A .22-caliber weapon is associated with the bullet recovered from the victim’s body, according to testimony from Arapahoe sheriff ’s Detective Ben Bussard.

When authorities searched Birch’s car, they found “a lot of ” .22 caliber ammunition, Bussard said.

Bussard testified that the weight of the projectile in the incident is consistent with a .22 round but could not state whether it was consistent with rounds of different sizes and potentially other calibers, defense attorney Grayson Lindstrom argued.

Another person had identified the sweatshirt before the woman who identified herself as Birch’s ex-girlfriend did, the defense pointed out. The person said the “No pain, no Jane” phrase may be related to a mountain area in Colorado known as Mary Jane.

Regarding “the sweatshirt collected that was supposedly painted over containing the ‘No pain, no Jane’ image, multiple people said they know what that sweatshirt was just from a grainy image,” Lindstrom said, arguing it’s a widely known ski-related phrase in Colorado.

During a search of the apartment where Birch was staying, authorities found ash in the fireplace and what looked like a partially burned container of cigarettes, along with spray paint and a sweatshirt that was painted over in black, Bussard said.

Stuart, the judge, ruled that several charges against Birch will move forward. Birch had been charged in the incident with first-degree murder after deliberation, first-degree felony murder, tampering with physical evidence, possession of a weapon by a previous offender, carrying a concealed weapon, theft of $300 to $750 and counts regarding robbery, according to online court records.

Previously, Birch has pleaded guilty to burglary of a building in 2013, to assault in 2013 and to criminal mischief in 2015, according to online court records.

Birch is set for arraignment on March 31.

A second gas station in Centennial that was robbed on that same day sits on East Arapahoe Road near South Havana Street, according to a sheriff ’s office news release.

About 4:30 p.m. that day, a male entered the Conoco gas station at 10210 E. Arapahoe Road in central Centennial and pointed a handgun at the clerk, according to the sheriff ’s office. The clerk gave the suspect the cash drawer, and then the suspect fired a single round into the ceiling, the release said.

The clerk was not injured and the suspect left southbound on foot from the area. Investigators also believe that suspect was Birch.

Investigators say they are drawing closer to solving one of the worst crimes in Littleton history, but they are still seeking people with information to

come forward.

Advances in DNA and genealogy technology have provided new investigative avenues in the 2002 triple murder of James Springer, Erin Golla and Robert Zajac at the AMF Broadway Lanes bowling alley, Littleton Police Chief Doug Stephens said at a press conference on Feb. 17.

But investigators still need to hear from people with information about the crime, Stephens said, as a significant increase in the Crime Stoppers reward

City to tap artists to spotlight businesses

The City of Centennial is accepting applications from retail, restaurant and service businesses to be included in the city’s 2021 Spark Experience Accelerator, a program that pairs artists with merchants to create “unique offerings” that call attention to Centennial businesses, the city announced on its website.

The shift in American consumerism toward prioritizing “experiences over products or things,” the city’s website notes, has created a need for businesses to adjust.

The city’s Spark Experience Accelerator is part of the Spark Centennial program, an effort to put spotlight on Centennial’s local businesses and, possibly, to entice businesses to fill spaces that sit vacant in the city. Centennial began holding the “Spark” events in 2019.

The city described its accelerator effort as an opportunity to create artistic programming that “enhances the customer experience,” to increase sales through a collaborative marketing and public-relations

initiative, and to connect with a network of creative talent.

The broader Spark Centennial effort has put on artistic collaborations before: A display with changing lights and flashy trappings occupied the front of the vacant former Petco building near University Boulevard and Dry Creek Road in December.

It was part of an interactive smartphone-based puzzle called “With My Gnomies” that sent participants on a hunt to visit or learn more about nearby businesses, such as Rolling Smoke BBQ, Cakeheads Bakery and Professionally Faded Barbershop.

The program will also offer marketing and communications support to promote businesses’ “experience offerings” and monthly chats with industry experts. Participation in the program is funded by the City of Centennial.

Stephens said people with information in the case are likely still in the community, and said in such cases people “do not come forward due to their close relationship with those who may have been involved, as well as their reputation and standing in the community and among friends. We recognize relationships change over time, as do people and their perspectives. It is not too late to come forward.”

Echoing other speakers at the

press conference, Stephens said investigators can make a distinction between those who perpetrated a crime and those roped into it.

“There are times when people are unknowingly brought into a situation by the person responsible,” he said. “Rest assured we have the ability to identify those that were inadvertently involved.”

Schneider, the FBI chief, backed up Stephens.

“The families of James, Erin and Robert are counting on those with information to come forward,” he said. “No piece of information is too small.”

Kellner, the district attorney, said the DNA and genealogy evidence being employed in the investigation is similar to what led to the 2019 arrest and subsequent guilty plea of James Clanton, who killed Helene Pruszynski in Douglas County in 1980, and the 2018 arrest and subsequent guilty pleas of Joseph DeAngelo, the so-called Golden State Killer, in California.

“Those same advances are being brought to bear on this case,” Kellner said. “This is your opportunity.

If you know something, if you think you know something, call, step up to the plate to help solve this crime.”

Much of the DNA and genealogy analysis work has been done through a partnership between Crime Stoppers and United Data Connect, Morrissey’s forensic DNA analysis firm, Morrissey said.

“We’re here as part of this team to provide to provide state-of-theart DNA-based leads that will solve this case.” Morrissey said.

“We’ve already provided some, and the FBI has followed up on those quickly, and so has the task force.

We will continue until we find the individual or individuals responsible.”

The partnership between Crime Stoppers and United Data Connect has already yielded answers in many other cases, Morrissey said, adding he is eager to provide answers in this case.

“My hope is we can give those answers in a time that those individuals in those families are still here to understand and appreciate and get the closure they need,” he said.

Mills, who heads Metro Denver Crime Stoppers, spoke directly to those with information in the case.

“We’ll get answers for James, Erin, Robert, and for their families and friends,” Mills said. “There’s no question in my mind that with your assistance we’ll bring justice … Can you help? Will you help? Are you willing to break your silence, remain anonymous, and help us solve this case?”

Getting back to ‘normal’ will take time, work, Warren-Gully says Newest Arapahoe commissioner talks vaccines, homelessness, taxes in town hall

The study found that people who lost jobs or incurred significant medical burdens over the past year were more likely to lose housing, and called on local governments and nonprofits to better coordinate their responses.

“The report made an acknowledgment that we’re never going to end or eradicate homelessness,” she said. “What we want to do is make sure if someone is experiencing homelessness, it’s as brief as possible and only happens once.

We’re trying to provide support services to gain the support and skills they need.”

Warren-Gully cited the county’s use of CARES Act funds to cover motel vouchers for families living in homelessness, and other efforts like assigning a staff member solely devoted to assisting veterans on the brink of homelessness.

Other CARES Act expenditures have included millions in rent and mortgage assistance and grants to food banks and other nonprofits, Warren-Gully said.

But economic recovery is a multi-faceted process, she said.

It’s not just about lifting restrictions but getting people to the point of feeling comfortable enough to return to gyms, theaters and other gatherings.

“We need to acknowledge a lot will come from the federal level. If we can move forward as a nation to get vaccines, open schools and resources as much as we can, that will be helpful to move forward locally as well.”

Some issues go beyond COVID. The county’s quarter-cent sales tax that funds parks, trails and open spaces expires in 2023, leaving county officials to decide whether to ask voters to renew the tax, possibly as soon as this fall.

At least there are some signs of normalcy: “I’m hearing traffic is back to pre-pandemic levels,” WarrenGully said.

There’s a lot of work to do before life in Arapahoe County begins resembling “normal” again, but that work is getting started, the county’s newest commissioner said.

Carrie Warren-Gully held her first town hall meeting as a county commissioner on Feb. 17, a month after she was sworn in to represent District 1, which covers Littleton, Englewood, Columbine Valley and Warren-Gully parts of Centennial.

She said returning to life beyond the pandemic will take time and adjustment.

“Normal is an interesting question, isn’t it?” she said in the virtual meeting. “I’m sorry if I use that term flippantly. It’ll be a new normal … when people start to feel comfortable, that’s when it could look different.”

Vaccines are key, she said, as is reopening schools.

“That’s when families will have the opportunity to be working as fully as they choose to be.”

But the pandemic has created or exacerbated a lot of problems that will need attention from county officials, she said.

The effects of the pandemic and associated economic impacts have pushed a lot of people on the margins into homelessness, WarrenGully said, citing a comprehensive study presented recently to the Tri-Cities Homelessness Initiative, a task force covering Engle-

Lawmakers have full plate as session gets underway Helping students get past problems related to pandemic is at top of job list

Helping Colorado students recover from the effects of the pandemic will be one of lawmakers’ top priorities as the 2021 legislative session gets underway, but members of the Colorado General Assembly also plan to address longstanding problems around school finance, college access, teacher diversity and civics education.

Lawmakers returned to work Feb. 16 after a monthlong recess due to COVID-19 concerns. While most Colorado students are back in school, hundreds of thousands of students experienced months of remote learning in the spring and fall, and parents, educators and policymakers alike are thinking about how to make up for lost learning.

At least two bills this session

tackle the problem from different angles.

The more than 200 bills filed on Feb. 16 also include proposals to maintain school funding despite a drop in enrollment, reduce the role of the SAT and ACT in college admissions, improve college access for Native American students, and strengthen civics education and media literacy after a tumultuous year of protest and change.

The first bills out of the gate often represent top priorities for their sponsors, but they touch on just a fraction of the education issues lawmakers will take up this year.

would call on the Colorado Department of Education to identify products, strategies, and services to help students affected by the halt of in-person instruction.

Education Commissioner Katy Anthes has also identified this as a top priority and pledged to use roughly $52 million in federal aid on programs that provide tutoring and summer school, but plans are still taking shape.  SB21-037 Student Equity Education Funding Programs The bill sponsored by state Sen. Paul Lundeen, a Republican from Monument, faces an uphill battle in a Democratic-controlled General Assembly where many lawmakers are wary of taking money from public schools or opening the door to any form of vouchers. It proposes that districts that have halted in-person instruction for 30 or more days send money to parents of eligible students for educational services and supplies.  SB21-053 Adjustments to School Funding Fiscal Year 2020-21 Colorado schools reported almost 30,000 fewer students than in the 2019-20 school year, a decrease that typically would result in a multimillion-dollar reduction in state funding. Four Democrats, including the chairs of the Senate and House education committees and members of the Joint Budget Committee, filed this bill in an effort to spare districts from midyear cuts.

If passed, the bill would provide additional money to districts that saw enrollment decreases in the 2020-21 school year compared with the previous year.

While they don’t have the votes to stop this bill, Republican leaders have said they plan to ask hard questions about where that money is best spent.  HB21-1067 College Admission Use Of National Test Score The bill would allow the governing board of a public college or university to decide whether to require the ACT or SAT for admission. Schools would also need to submit a yearly report on their first-time freshman class. The bill

is sponsored by state Rep. Cathy Kipp, a Fort Collins Democrat, and state Rep. Mark Baisley, a Roxborough Republican, along with Democratic state Sens. Tammy Story of Jefferson County and Janet Buckner of Aurora. The proposed legislation aims to help more students of color and those who are low-income get into college, especially because research shows the standardized tests are biased against certain groups.

Opponents, however, say the bill won’t achieve its aims and instead further inequities.  SB21-057 Private Lenders Of Student Loans Acts And Practices The bill, sponsored by Democratic Sens. Faith Winter of Westminster and Julie Gonzales of Denver, would extend to private student loan borrowers the basic protections granted under federal loans. The protections would leave private loan borrowers less vulnerable to predatory practices, advocates say.  SB21-029 Colorado American Indian Tribes In-state Tuition Some Colorado colleges and universities already offer tuition discounts to Native American students. This bill, however, would require higher education institutions statewide to offer in-state tuition to students from American Indian tribes with historical ties to Colorado. Boulder Democratic Sen. Stephen Fenberg and Denver Democratic Reps. Alec Garnett and Adrienne Benavidez sponsored the bill.  HB21-1103 Media Literacy Implementation After a year in which the dangers of disinformation became clearer than ever, Colorado lawmakers will take up a bill incorporating media literacy into the state’s reading, writing and civics standards and requiring the state education department to create a resource library for teaching media literacy and offer assistance to schools that ask for it. For Holly Houston, stopping by was a spur-of-the-moment decision when she noticed cars in the drivethru for the first time. The Douglas County woman had been watching the restaurant’s construction, she said, looking forward to trying it at a location closer to home.

“I’ve been waiting for this one to open,” she said.

Company spokesman Denny Warnick said the building has been ready for weeks and could have opened as early as December.

In-N-Out waited until COVID-19 cases improved at the company’s other Colorado locations, which became outbreak sites after opening, and for cases to trend down in the surrounding community, Warnick said.

“We just thought it would be wiser to wait until both those results had improved to open another location,” he said.

Lone Tree employees were tested for COVID-19 before opening day and would be tested again after, he said. They were also assigned teams, which worked in specific sections of the kitchen to lessen how often people crossed paths, he said.

The Lone Tree location employs 80 people so far and will continue hiring, he said.

Warnick said In-N-Out worked with the City of Lone Tree, the Lone Tree Police Department and a third-party, traffic-control company, Colorado Barricade, to devise a traffic plan at the company’s expense.

Man found dead in creek near Englewood border Christopher Rose, 52, made headlines last summer for alleged stalking, racist threats in Aspen

Cherry Hills Village Police are investigating after a man was found dead on Feb. 9 in Little Dry Creek beneath the Clarkson Avenue bridge, on the border with Englewood just a block south of U.S. 285.

June for allegedly stalking, harassing and taunting a female neighbor with racist epithets, and harassing and threatening another man, according to the Aspen Times.

Rose faced a slew of arrests in May and June, court records show.

Rose had open warrants for felony charges including extortion, witness retaliation, violating bail bonds, stalking and making threats. He also faced misdemeanor charges of bias-motivated harassment, ethnic intimidation and violating a protection order.

The investigation is ongoing, Tovrea said.

Pandemic diversion is one for the books

man past sixty living alone with a small dog walks to his guest room where a little library of fiction is kept and scans the spines for an option to read as the QUIET second year of DESPERATION a pandemic has him climbing the walls like Gregor Samsa.

1. Written by a woman, this book, later the source of several films (as are a number of entries in the list), tells the story of a young scientist who creates a sapient creature.

2. “A dilemma or difficult circumstance from which there is no escape because of mutually conflicting or dependent condi-

tions.”

3. It focuses on four anthropomorphized animals, is beautifully illustrated (mine by E.H. Shepard), is considered a children’s book, but is enjoyed by readers of all ages. One of the characters, a European water vole, goes by the name “Rat.” 4. The main character’s surname is Smith. Where he lives the clocks twice a day strike thirteen.

5. “He made the fish fast to bow and stern and to the middle thwart. He was so big it was like lashing a much bigger skiff alongside.”

6. Its major theme is the destructiveness of war, is “sciencefiction infused,” and follows the life of an American soldier named Billy who sometimes travels through time.

7. Perhaps my favorite ending: “He turned and walked across the floor and out. I watched the door close. I listened to his steps going away down the imitation marble corridor. After a while they got faint, then got silent. I

kept on listening anyway. What for? Did I want him to stop suddenly and turn and come back and talk me out of the way I felt?

Well, he didn’t. That was the last I saw of him.”

Written by one of my favorites authors, made into a film, as were several of his other books, but not as successful.

8. A short, only 24,505 words, potent story about the wife of the owner of a “roadside sandwich joint” and a drifter who is smitten by her.

9. She sells evening gloves at Neiman-Marcus.

10. In a “magical realist style” it tells a “multi-generational story” in the fictional town of Mocondo.

11. A first novel published in 1970; Lorain, Ohio; young Black girl; desires blue eyes.

12. Another main character name Smith, only this one is a Martian. By the way, my middle name breaks down into “Mars Hall.”

13. This one is too easy, but it’s the author’s most famous: “A

diabolical dog” that’s not Harry causes problems on an English moorland.

14. I’d tell you where the book is set but the location is in the title. There’s a cave, an accusation, a trial, a recant, and a happy ending. It didn’t do much for me in high school when it was required reading.

15. It’s a 1930 detective novel originally serialized in the magazine “Black Mask” that’s been made into several film versions, the most famous released 80 years ago.

16. Written by the same author, a more light-hearted detective novel featuring a wealthy married couple who try to locate a missing inventor who is light on his feet.

The right question requires the right response

A

nagging and recurring elbow injury had finally forced my hand to seek medical attention. After meeting with an orthopedic surgeon, the diagnosis was more WINNING than tennis elbow or bursitis, it was WORDS a situation that would require surgery to fix.

With surgery come the preoperative exams such as blood work, chest X-ray, and EKG. AddiMichael Norton tionally, medical clearance was needed by my primary care physician. I also needed to have a negative COVID test within five days of surgery. No problem, I can take care of these things easily. As is my nature, my attitude was great, and I was ready and motivated to have the surgery.

Having completed almost all the testing requirements, I still needed to have my COVID test. No worries, just one more box to cross

off the list of pre-surgery to-dos. I signed in and waited for my name to be called. As the nurse greeted me, she asked me how I was doing. That’s an easy one I thought, as I answer this question about a dozen times a day. My answer, borrowed from my good friend Jerry Nazzaro, is always, “Great, couldn’t be better if I tried.”

Her response, “Well then, why don’t you try?”

Her answer was so simple, so direct, and yet took me a little by surprise. You see, I have been responding to that question for so many years in the same way and typically people either smile or reply with something such as, “That’s awesome, I wish I felt that good.” But never, “Well then, why don’t you try?”

By responding to the question of how I am doing by saying that I am great and could not be better if I tried, is never meant to be flippant or superficial. It is just something I learned many years ago from my friend Jerry. Jerry is a guy with one of the greatest attitudes I have ever witnessed.

Despite anything he faced, no

matter how big the challenge, he would always reply in that same way, “Great, couldn’t be better if I tried.”

The nurse didn’t initially realize how she threw me off a bit as she just continued getting everything ready for my test. However, as she turned toward me again, and even though I was wearing a mask, she could see the puzzled look on my face. When I shared with her that no one had ever so simply and sincerely challenged my statement regarding how I was doing, she just shrugged as if it were the most natural thing she should have said. And it was.

The test was over quickly, she was kind, gentle, and made it as easy as possible. As I left, I thanked her for making the test so easy, but making my day a little bit harder. Now it was her turn to have that puzzled look on her face. I shared that I thought her question was brilliant and that she now inspired me to want to “try” and be better.

I thought about this as I drove home from the hospital. Is this really the best answer I can give

when someone asks me how I am doing? My nurse, Danielle, was exactly right. I could try to be better no matter how poorly or how amazing my day may be going.

The list of things I could do to try and be better in any given moment started flooding my mind; Call a friend, maybe Jerry; Listen to a motivational podcast; Pray; Call a customer; Better yet, call a prospect; Facetime my children and grandchildren; Take a walk on the beach with my wife. The list was endless. Not that I didn’t know and understand this concept already on some level, but it was a good and much-appreciated reminder.

Reflections on my black history — the water we swim in

invite you to read this even if you think you don’t want to. I GUEST promise it will COLUMN be relevant to you.

Before Black History Month ends, I thought I better ‘fess up to my own Black history. Yes, I’m a EuroAmerican white woman.

No, I have no Black ancestors (that I’m Linda Newell aware of). However, over the last several years, I’ve done some deep digging into the roots of my own racism. Yup, I said it; that word, racism. It’s the water we swim in, the air we breathe. That doesn’t mean I’m a bad person. Admitting it and then working on it is actually a prolific sign of a person who is attempting to grow into an anti-racist.

As I’ve looked back in history, whether it be family, community, or nation, I have learned that there are some small (and very large) pockets of racism woven throughout my make-up. Those might look more subtle now since I’ve been doing my anti-racism work, but they’re still there in my psyche and body, impossible to completely eradicate.

One of the startling roots I found was when I was writing a self-reflection paper in seminary in a course about Identity, Power, and Difference.

I recalled a memory of my grandmother singing to me in her rocking chair. One line kept repeating in my head, “Go to sleep, my little...” (an offensive word referring to a Black baby). It’s been in my dreams throughout childhood and beyond, and I always thought it was so sweet of my grandmother to sing to me what she had sung to my mom when she was a baby. Little did I know that she was repeating lyrics that were offensive and downright racist. My

own grandmother, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) who had handed down her beautiful quilt to me from the Civil War period, had been sowing words of harm in my ear.

At first, I was saddened and ashamed that there was such blatant racism in my own family. But I also had to recognize that she was most likely just singing a song that had been sung to her, without thinking about the words as she sang. And I’m not going to discredit all the other wonderful things she did for me and taught me. But I am now more conscious of what intentions and words are in the songs I’m singing.

For me, I feel it is important that with every Black History Month, I review and reflect on where my own racism resides and then intentionally work against it in my current life. For the sake of my family and my future grandchildren, I can’t stop at an annual time each year. I need to be conscious and aware of my thoughts, words, and behaviors every day and embody a life of anti-racism. It doesn’t mean I need to beat myself up, dwell in guilt, or harbor self-resentment. It doesn’t mean I’m not a good person. It just means that I’m a white human who’s lived in a country built on the backs of Black, Brown, and Indigenous peoples. I know better now. I can do better now.

Possible timeline set for new Trader Joe’s grocery store The company’s beer license was recently approved

The Town of Parker is one step closer to getting a Trader Joe’s after the grocery store’s beer license was unanimously approved in a Feb. 18 meeting of Parker’s special licensing authority.

Trader Joe’s, a chain of small grocery stores headquartered in California, is known for its private labeled, uncommon food items such as cookie butter, cauliflower pizza crust and pickleflavored popcorn.

“You’ll find something unique at a really great price,” Phil Wofford, regional vice president of the company, said during the meeting.

The soonest the store could begin operating would be about a year from now, Wofford said.

“Whether it takes longer due to other things with construction, I don’t know,” Wofford said.

Once open, it will have daily hours from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. with closures on major holidays. The store, which will have about 80 employees, will be located at 18374 Cottonwood Drive, Suite 150, near the Costco Wholesale.

The store will sell non-refrigerated beer but not any of its trademark affordable wine — sometimes called “Two-Buck Chuck” — because of its proximity to a liquor store, Wofford said. Their beer inventory will focus on Colorado and local beer selections and some will rotate seasonally, he said.

Trader Joe’s, which has been in Colorado for seven years, has seven existing locations in the state.

There were no public comments during the meeting.

allas Burleson stepped up to the lectern and welcomed people joining Friendship Baptist Church of Christ Jesus for a Sunday service.

She was accompanied onstage by her daughter, Stacie Burleson, to start the worship hour with a song.

Just a little later, Pastor Paul Burleson, Dallas’ husband and Stacie’s father, took center stage. The three finished the Feb. 14 service by singing together, embodying the family ties the Denver church is based on.

The service also featured a Black History Month presentation. At one point, presenter Janay Lewis said, “My mind began to wander with a thought: Where would the world be without the Friendship Baptist Church of Jesus Christ? The church was started 46 years ago by a young pastor named Pastor Paul Burleson.”

If not for Paul Burleson, Lewis said, there would be no Friendship Baptist, which has gone on to impact the community.

Just as an example, Dallas and Paul Burleson described in a separate conversation, Friendship Baptist helped find housing in Denver for people displaced from New Orleans and Houston after hurricanes Katrina and Harvey, respectively. son prayed at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, where he made the acquaintance of former President Barack Obama and now-President Joe Biden. Dallas Burleson sang an opening song for an event in Denver featuring civil rights activist Ralph Abernathy.

This eventful journey doesn’t start with Paul Burleson 46 years ago, though. It goes back further than that, the Burlesons explained.

To the banks of the South Platte River in Littleton, where George and Dorothy Johnson, Dallas Burleson’s parents, held a Bible study. It’s George and Dorothy Johnson, the Burlesons say, who deserve credit for the church and so much else.

Making Littleton home The Johnson family moved to Littleton in 1949, when George accepted a job offer to groom horses for a rancher in town. Before then, the family had lived in other places in Colorado, Bailey and Broomfield, and in Omaha, Nebraska.

“We liked it in Littleton. We had such a good time. Everything was right there on the ranch. People coming to ride horses, it was exciting,” said GeorgeAnne Redd, another daughter to George and Dorothy.

Altogether, there were six Johnson children: GeorgeAnne, Dallas, Johnny Lee, Robert, George Jr. and Charles. When the Johnsons moved to Littleton, they were the only African American family in town,

Redd said.

At the time, most African American people lived in Denver. When the Johnsons occasionally visited the city, Redd said, “It was really strange to see all these Black people in one place because all we had ever seen was Caucasian people when we went to school.” Soon enough, though, they met a couple Black families in Englewood — including Jessie and Lola Holmes and their family.

Talking about the two families’ relationship, Geraldine Holmes, the daughter-in-law of Jessie and Lola, recollected “Nobody was a stranger, they were just like family.”

In 1956, after being a horse groomer for other people, Johnson opened his own stable, Happy Valley Stables, in Littleton, Redd said.

There, he housed and trained other peoples’ horses and also taught riding lessons.

Happy Valley also gave Johnson the opportunity to train as a horse exhibitor, a side gig he would become successful at. Starting in the 1950s, he began showing at the National Western Stock Show. At that time, Redd doesn’t recall seeing other Black exhibitors at the stock show, leading her to think he was the first, though stock show officials were not able to confirm if that was the case following a recent inquiry.

Redd recalls seeing other Black people at the show, but said they were all groomers up until the 1970s.

“My dad was the first that I saw

that ever really showed,” she said.

Happy Valley wasn’t just a business enterprise, though. It was a community hub. “Everybody was at the stables every chance we got, mostly every weekend,” said Geraldine Holmes. The Holmes family and others would join the Johnsons for picnics and horseback riding.

Also, in the warmer months, Dorothy Johnson led family and friends in a Bible study along the banks of the South Platte River.

The strong bond between the Johnsons and Holmeses, and their commitment to gathering for a Bible study, would have a lasting effect.

They continued meeting throughout the years either along the South Platte, or, in the colder months, at the Holmes residence in Englewood.

‘A powerful journey’ Paul Burleson moved to Denver in December 1969 after serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He had an uncle living in Denver who would attend the Johnson/ Holmes Bible study. So, on his first day in town, Paul Burleson accompanied his uncle to the Bible study.

There, he met Dallas and they hit it off instantly.

“I didn’t even know anything about her except that I was attracted to her and the Lord put in my spirit, ‘That’s your wife,’” Paul Burleson recalled.

So very refreshing on a winter day ... abstract may be the chosen approach to interpretation, but I felt fresh air and sunshine Each artist has a brief statement posted. Take a moment to read them. One wishes the type were a bit larger, but they offer some insight on the individuals.

When one enters the gallery, Annamarie Mead’s “Light of the Setting Sun,” to the right of the entrance, does indeed convey that glow that comes with a summer night. I could almost smell the soft, lovely

air one so enjoys then! Her works are created with oil paint and cold wax on cradled birch board and the aforementioned painting is highly textured, with mountain forms.

Continue around the gallery to the right to see more of her works, after a collection of Cyncie Winter’s art which starts with “May the Forest Be With You” (2020, acrylic, 40” x 40”), which features heavy, dark plant forms — or are some critters?

It invites the viewer into a warm campsite world, I think — or is a fire starting?? I prefer the cozy campsite idea! This one is fun to contemplate. It looks like the painter really enjoyed her paints — sometimes simply squeezed from the tube, with a flourish! Colors are fresh, but toned down a bit.

In July, Adams will attend the induction ceremony for the Black Tennis Hall of Fame in Dorchester, Massachusetts.

The Black Tennis Hall of Fame “honors individuals who have broken through the barriers of race and class to achieve success” in tennis, according to its website.

Adams, the first Black president of the Colorado Tennis Association and of the Intermountain chapter of the United States Tennis Association, is also a member of the USTA Colorado district’s diversity and inclusion committee.

“I think we have a long way to go on that committee,” he said.

In the past, Adams volunteered with the Native American Recreation Center in Denver and helped organize a Native American tennis championship.

When he first tried out and joined the Junior Tennis League as a teenager, that organization was focused on taking tennis “out of the country club and into the streets,” Adams said. Now, he’s continuing that mission.

“Tennis teaches you to problemsolve,” Adams said. “That’s what I’m trying to teach is how to overcome adversity … and it’s the effort

that makes you successful, not the outcome.”

One student of Adams’, Jessika Mozia, said that messge was one of her major takeaways from having Adams as a coach at HRCA’s Northridge Rec Center for 16 years. The coach helped her grow both as a tennis player and a person, she said.

“Frank has taught me the motivation I have for goal setting takes me (beyond) just my sport,” Mozia said.

Mozia, who started taking lessons from Adams at age 6, went on to get a full-ride scholarship to play tennis at the University of Minnesota and became one of their winningest players.

“He knew I was very serious about tennis … and from the start we would always map out short-term and long-term goals,” Mozia said, “And Frank held me accountable to those goals.”

Mozia, now 27, saw Adams as “the epitome” of selflessness and was in awe of how much he worked to include people facing all sorts of obstacles in their lives, she said.

“He’s someone you definitely want in your corner,” she said.

When Mozia heard that Adams was being inducted, she said she “thought it was perfect,” and that it “couldn’t have gone to anyone more deserving than Frank.”

When Adams learned he was being designated as a “regional legend” by the Black Tennis Hall of Fame, he was “stunned, flabbergasted and shocked,” he said.

“I look at all the people on the committee and I don’t think of myself as being on that level but more standing on their shoulders,” he said. “I’m very grateful to receive that honor.”

and crisp patterns: In the prints, she uses collage to add interest.

It is indeed rewarding to wander through this collection of abstract work and think about these artists’ joy in their Colorado surroundings.

Although there’s a feeling interpreted here rather than anything realistic, the compositions and color say plenty.

When Highlands Ranch tennis coach Frank Adams first picked up a racket as a 15-year-old in Philadelphia, the closest he’d previously been to playing the sport was PingPong.

Now, at 63, he’s being inducted into the Black Tennis Hall of Fame.

Adams, who has been the head tennis pro for the Highlands Ranch Community Association for about 20 years, focuses much of his time as a coach on incorporating as many new people as possible into the sport.

“I’ve been raised to look out for other people,” he said. “I’ve tried not to leave people behind.”

Outside of traditional lessons for kids and adults of all ages, Adams also teaches wheelchair tennis.

He’s not only a coach for athletes though, Adams also teaches others how to coach both traditional and wheelchair tennis. He also volunteers with organizations such as the HRCA’s Therapeutic Recreation program, the Denver Asian Tennis League, the City Park Racquet Club and Colorado Serves, also known as Denver STAR Search, an organization that helps connect Denver’s inner-city kids to the sport.

“The number one thing I try to teach coaches to be is student-centered,” he said. “It’s always about the student … I tell them to make

Paul Burleson would become leader of the Bible study. At the time, he was studying ministry in Denver.

Then, in 1974 in the Holmeses’ basement, the group officially formed the church and named Burleson pastor. Redd had the honor of naming the church. “Because of the friendship that we had with the Holmeses … I named it Friendship Baptist Church and it was accepted,” Redd said.

For four years, the church met at the Holmeses’ home until eventually moving into a school building in Englewood. Then, in 1984, they moved to an old house in Denver on Holly Street. In 1990, Friendship Baptist realized it needed to upgrade its space, when Bear Valley Church in Lakewood approached them. Bear Valley offered up its old church building if Friendship Baptist could literally move the building to Holly St, the Burlesons described.

So, piece-by-piece, Friendship Baptist transported the building to Holly St. to replace the house that was there. Later, in 2000, Friendship Baptist moved one last time to the location it is currently at along Fairfax Street in Denver.

Throughout that time, the Burlesons became more active in the community. Paul was president of the Greater Metro Denver Ministerial Alliance and got involved with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Meanwhile, Dallas became more well-known for her singing

and songwriting. She performed at concerts headlined by major gospel artists and wrote original songs performed by musicians. She recently wrote and published her first children’s book, “The Adventures of Fanny Faithful.”

“It’s been such a powerful journey,” said Dallas Burleson. “In the good, in the bad. There’s been the ugly … But

there’s been so much joy.”

As for the other Johnson children, Redd currently oversees administrative operations at Friendship Baptist after a career in real estate. Robert Johnson recently retired from pastoring his own church. George Jr. and Charles Johnson were musicians and had a band, Mother Pearl, that performed in Littleton and

Denver. Charles Johnson was also a Vietnam veteran and received the Purple Heart, Redd said.

Today, Redd, Dallas Burleson and Robert Johnson are the only living members of the Johnson family’s original eight. Yet, reminders of the family’s collective memory are everywhere, such as a horse galloping on TV or a church service at Friendship Baptist.

“The bottom line was that we were standing on the shoulders of Dallas’ mother and father, George Johnson and Miss Dorothy Johnson,” Paul Burleson said. “So, we want to make sure that we don’t forget them as being fearless pioneers and tireless trailblazers.”
