Law enforcement agencies to block radio channels Sheriff’s office, police departments to make move in January

The Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office will soon block the public from listening to its radio communications.

The move comes because suspects “often know we’re coming to calls — the bad guys know where we are, they know where we’re staging. We just don’t want criminals to know (what we’re doing),” said Deborah Sherman, sheriff ’s office spokeswoman. “We’ve seen, in the recent past, strip-mall burglars that had scanners in their cars.”

The need to communicate with other agencies that have also encrypted their radio traffic drove the decision as well, Sherman said.

In recent months and years, other agencies across Colorado and the nation also have blocked access to police radios — often referred to as “scanners,” devices that pick up law enforcement conversations in the field. Media experts have decried the trend as a loss of transparency.

Law enforcement officials, on the other hand, have cited safety concerns for officers as a main reason to encrypt their radio channels.

Switching between public and

encrypted channels on an as-needed basis is difficult, according to the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office.

Officers have described changing channels in high-pressure situations as cumbersome and stressful.

The shooting death of Douglas County Sheriff ’s Deputy Zackari Parrish is an example cited. Parrish was killed in December 2017 in an incident that drew a heavy, multi-agency police response to Highlands Ranch after a gunman opened fire on multiple deputies.

Parrish was injured and left unresponsive, unable to evacuate the gunman’s apartment. That left the gunman with Parrish’s radio, allowing the suspect to obtain information.

Encryption would not have helped during the Parrish shooting, where communications were compromised, but it demonstrated the difficulty in switching channels from the field, the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office has told Colorado Community Media.

Asking officers to change channels in life-threatening situations is nearly impossible, Castle Rock Police Chief Jack Cauley said in a previous interview with CCM. As of Dec. 2, the Castle Rock, Parker and Lone Tree police departments and Elbert County law enforcement encrypted, along with the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office. The Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office will encrypt by mid-January, Sherman said. That includes the “primary” channel — the one that media and the public gener-

Mandatory overtime for light rail operators and bus drivers is taking a toll on the employees, as well as the Regional Transportation District (RTD) system as a whole — and service cutbacks could be on the horizon.

Due to a chronic driver/operator shortage, current RTD bus drivers and light rail operators are required to work six days a week, which averages to be an approximate 52-hour workweek for many of them, said Natalie Menten, RTD director for District M, which includes Golden, Wheat Ridge and Lakewood.

“We’ve tried many steps to bring in more drivers and keep them,” Menten said, “but we’re not getting ahead of it.”

Some employees like the overtime, but others, even with incentives provided, have a hard time working that much, Menten added.

And in general, “those with lower seniority (recent hires) are the ones forced to work overtime,” Menten said, “so we don’t retain them.”

The Sky Ridge Station was one of the three new light rail stations that opened in May as part of the Southeast Rail Extension project in Lone Tree.

These cutbacks would affect the system metro-wide, including light rail and bus service. But as of now, it is unknown what will be cut, Menten said, adding that a draft of any potential cutbacks is currently in the works. Still, it’s quite possible that bus and rail service could be cut by 5% to 10%, and/or route service hours could be reduced.

There are three rail lines that will not be affected by any potential cutbacks. They are lines A, B and G. This

is because Denver Transit Partners — RTD’s selected concessionaire for the Eagle P3 Project which includes the A, B and G rail lines — has a long-term agreement through 2056 to operate and maintain those rail lines.

A draft of potential cutbacks is expected to be presented to RTD’s board of directors at a study session meeting on Dec. 19. The meeting is open to the public but there is no public comment period planned at the meeting.

However, RTD has been initiating public outreach efforts since October, Menten said, and during November, asked people to complete a survey

relating to their RTD service preferences. A main portion of the survey was for RTD to receive feedback on two rider options: (1) keep the current service as advertised but have no guarantee the bus or train would arrive on time or at all; or (2) reduce the service but have a better chance that the bus or train will show up.

About 13,000 people took the survey, Menten said, and 60% of them favored option 2, noting that reliability was most important to them.

In a press release, RTD’s general manager and CEO Dave Genova stated the importance of rider and stakeholder input.

“My staff is confident that we are presenting the board with ample information as they consider making this impactful decision,” Genova said in the press release of the potential cutbacks.

Once the draft of potential cutbacks has been presented to the board this December, RTD will be seeking more public input through January. Based on the input from this upcoming public outreach period, the RTD board will make a decision, Menten said.

The decision will likely happen in February, and any potential changes would be implemented in spring 2020.

“We’re at the point that riders are getting upset that they can’t depend on the service we advertise,” Menten said.

Parent sues over son’s expulsion following social media post Student was expelled from Cherry Creek High over reference to violence against Jews

The father of a high school student who was expelled for his “exterminate the Jews” social-media post is suing Cherry Creek Schools, claiming his son’s rights of free speech and due process were violated.

A student identified as “C.G.,” who attended Cherry Creek High School at the time, had posted a Snapchat photo of his friends at a local thrift store trying on hats and wigs. One wore an oversized hat with an American flag pattern, another wore a blond wig and a third wore what resembled a foreign military hat from the World War II period, according to the complaint in the case.

The school suspended and later expelled the student for that September social media post based on school district policies that his father’s attorneys allege are unconstitutional.

Creek student’s parents contacted Silva and asked the school to use the incident as “an opportunity for respectful dialogue.” The parents also urged the school to use the chance to “address the rise in hate speech” in the Cherry Creek community.

On Monday, Sept. 16, C.G. was escorted from class to a dean’s office and suspended for five days. Hours later, Silva emailed a letter to the community notifying it of the post and that the school was “investigating to determine the impact on the school environment.” A dean told C.G.’s mother Sept. 18 that the suspension was extended another five days to accommodate a review process for expulsion.

After Silva’s email blast, three more parents contacted the school, asking officials to use the incident to promote tolerance. Cherry Creek High used a school period Sept. 23 to discuss “how hate speech affects people.” One parent pressed officials to take disciplinary action.

C.G. and his parents tried to engage officials about working together to make the incident “a learning and a growth experience.” The parents sent officials an apology letter Sept. 23 from C.G. that said he had since talked to Jewish community members about the post’s impact, along with a letter from the parents.

Crafts bring out crowds Annual fair at Goodson rec center included bake sale, food truck

A packed parking lot was the sign of South Suburban Parks and Recreation’s 33rd annual Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair, where several dozen vendors and baked goods helped whip up holiday spirit.

Highlands Ranch resident Mona Leonida, 70, used the Dec. 7 event as an outlet for an especially personal craft.

“My husband got cancer, and I didn’t know what to do with myself,” said Leonida, whose husband has since recovered. In the meantime, she came up with the idea that helped her pass the time.

She arranges glass blocks with string lights inside for the holidays — with sports team memorabilia on the front.

“I do it for the fun,” Leonida said.

“All the money I make goes to the grandkids at Christmas.”

The Goodson Recreation Center event was the first-ever craft show for Amy Albi, an Acres Green resident who decided to build on a flash of inspiration.

“Boo-boo bunnies” sit at a table at a South Suburban Parks and Recreation craft fair. The crafts, made of washcloths, are shaped so buyers can put ice cubes inside them and apply them to a minor injury without having to hold the ice.

Foxfield to build traffic control gates Small town near Arapahoe and Parker roads pushing back on cut-through traffic

A small town of little more than one square mile in the southeast Denver metro area has a solution for cutthrough traffic: Don’t let it in.

“The town has attempted to mitigate traffic through decreased speed limit, increased fines and off-duty sheriff presence with little success,” Foxfield officials said in a joint statement.

Foxfield — which sits along East Arapahoe and South Parker roads — moved closer this year to building two gates to combat traffic that cuts through the town.

The City of Centennial and some patches of Aurora immediately surround much of Foxfield, whose small-town structure presents unique challenges: Its population is roughly 800, but it’s located at the southeast corner of one of the largest intersections in the suburban metro area.

“We have also had traffic engineers and experts assess the traffic problem.

During rush hour, the traffic gates would restrict access to and from Parker Road at East Fremont Avenue, and to and from East Jamison Avenue on South Richfield Street.

On April 30, Centennial was notified about the plan, and the city has many logistical concerns, according to Jeff Dankenbring, Centennial’s public works director.

“There does not appear to be enough room for motorists to turn around before the gates, if needed, especially for longer vehicles (such as) buses, delivery trucks,” Dankenbring said.

“Will traffic queues develop at the gate locations, and can the queues back up onto Parker Road? This would be a serious safety concern.”

The city recommends a traffic impact study be provided and questions how the plan would affect traffic circulation in Centennial, Dankenbring said. It’s likely the city will need to work with Foxfield as the plan unfolds.

“Constructing the traffic gates will have an impact on the adjacent Centennial neighborhoods as well as altering Centennial Public Works’ ability to maintain our streets affected by the traffic gates such as South Richfield Street, so additional collaboration would be required between the two municipalities,” Dankenbring said.

sion that the gates would be closed during morning and evening rush hour, and only residents would have access to pass through during those times, according to Foxfield. The plans have not been finalized, though.

The idea for a toll system was suggested and looked into, but there are no plans for such a system, the town said.

Mitigation has been a major concern since the town has seen dramatic increase in cut-through traffic, starting with the construction of the new Parker and Arapahoe interchange in recent years, according to Foxfield.

“Gating has been one of the proposed solutions for several years. In May 2018, a traffic committee consisting of residents was formed to explore various suggestions for traffic mitigation,” the town said. “This committee explored several potential solutions and presented their findings and recommendation for the traffic control gates to the (town) board of trustees on Oct. 18, 2018.”

Final drawings were approved in July 2019. Plans were shared with Centennial and the Colorado Department of Transportation, or CDOT, for their comments, according to the town.

Requests for proposals for work on the project were put out in August and again in September. Foxfield does not have any contracts yet in place, the town said, so it’s unclear when the gates could be completed.

On Nov. 25, Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock sent a letter to local media explaining his decision to encrypt and included an MOU. News organizations must sign the MOU to access the channels of law enforcement agencies in Douglas and Elbert counties, and only “legitimate” media outlets, as determined by the sheriff ’s office, would be able to do so, the letter says.

Of the eight media organizations offered access, none had signed the contract as of Dec. 2, Undersheriff Holly NicholsonKluth said. Colorado Community Media received and reviewed the MOU but had not made a decision on whether to sign it as of the reporting of this story.

Members of the public can receive recordings of radio traffic through a public records request after an incident occurs, but their requests would be subject to Colorado’s open records laws and could be denied if an investigation is still open, for example.

A bill introduced by state Rep. Kevin Van Winkle, R-Highlands Ranch, that would have prohibited agencies from encrypting except in certain circumstances, like tactical or investigative situations, died in committee during the 2018 Colorado legislative session.

Improper discipline alleged Despite the post taking place off campus, C.G.’s suspension was based on an alleged violation of District Policy JICDA(13), which prohibits verbal abuse on school grounds, according to the complaint.

“In violation of (district policy) JKD-1-R, C.G.’s parents were not given notice of a time and place they could meet with (district staff) to review the suspension,” the complaint read.

The student’s suspension was extended through Oct. 21 (a fall break occurred during mid-October).

At an expulsion hearing Oct. 7, Assistant Principal Kevin Uhlig testified that the Snapchat post caused “extreme outcry of concerned community members and students … over fear to come to school,” according to the complaint, which argues that no student expressed such fear.

The hearing officer found that JICDA(13), the policy cited for C.G.’s suspension, had not been violated but that C.G. did violate other district policy.

Cherry Creek Schools has a policy called JKD-1-E, which allows for expulsion or suspension for behavior on or off school property that is “detrimental to the welfare or safety of other pupils.” Another JICDA provision can lead to suspension or expulsion for behavior on or off

‘Defendants caused impact’ The complaint argues that school officials caused “nearly all” of the post’s impact on the school environment, saying that only one student’s parents contacted the school before Silva’s email to the community. It’s not clear how wide the reaction to the post at school or on social media was before Silva’s email.

In a general statement about the case, Abbe Smith, school district spokeswoman, said: “We dispute the allegations in the complaint and intend to vigorously defend against these claims.”

Haddon, Morgan and Foreman — the law firm serving the family — did not respond for comment by press time.

The complaint contends that district policies infringe on First Amendment and Fourteenth Amendment rights, arguing they violate rights of speech and due process.

“Countless constitutionally protected activities may fall within the permitted zone of discipline,” the complaint read.

The complaint seeks damages, for which a monetary amount is not given.

The complaint also appeared to argue that the post had some positive effect, saying, “C.G.’s post furthered CCHS’s educational mission as it served as a springboard to encourage a real conversation between students and faculty about offensive and hurtful speech.”

Dropping some of the bus services has been happening for about three years now, Menten said, and dropping some light rail services began in June this year.

One reason for the light rail drops, which is not on the forefront, is the extension of the Southeast Rail Line, Menten said. This line originally opened in 2006, but the extension of service into Lone Tree opened in May this year.

“Most don’t think 2.3 miles would affect it system-wide,” but it has, Menten said.

This is because the extension was partially funded by federal money, Menten said, and the federal government requires the line to provide more frequent service than what is actually needed. This means, for example, if an operator needs to take a restroom break, another employee must be on standby to operate the train. To solve this problem, RTD is waiting to hear back from the federal government on a request to reduce that service, Menten said.

Ridership is also low on some of the bus routes and rail lines, Menten said.

For example, the W Line, which runs to and from the Jefferson County government complex in Golden and Union Station in downtown Denver, had 4.3 million boardings in 2018 — the latest ridership numbers available to date.

This may sound like a lot, Menten said, but it’s not even half of the original projection for that rail line.

The 4.3 million breaks down to about 12,000 boardings per day during a seven-day week, Menten said. The original projection was nearly 20,000 boardings per day, for the five-day, Monday through Friday, workweek.

The bus driver and rail operator shortage, leading to possible service reductions, and the low ridership are all on top of the fact that RTD is now on the search for a new person to serve as its general manager and CEO. Genova, who had been employed by RTD since 1994, announced on Nov. 22 that he is preparing to retire, which will occur after the new year.

“We certainly have our hands full at RTD,” Menten said.

The RTD board study session on possible service cutbacks that is open to the public will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 19 at the RTD Board Office, 1660 Blake St. in Denver.

While no public comment is scheduled for the meeting, the public will have opportunities in the near future to provide input on any proposed service changes. A look back — and ahead — at Castlewood Library Branch with nearly 50-year history is being remodeled again

Frequent commuters on Arapahoe Road might know it as the building with the cone.

The distinctive silver cone structure at Castlewood Library came out of an effort to add an amenity for the smallest library patrons in 2002.

“We desperately wanted a story time room for our youngest visitors,” said Laurie Christensen, who managed Castlewood during its remodel that year.

But property restrictions around Castlewood’s location at Arapahoe Road and South Uinta Street — just west of Interstate 25 — limited its ability to expand.

“Since the portion of the library is below grade, we thought the cone would give us special story time space as well as something architecturally and visually interesting. I remember chatting with several Walnut Hills residents who were delighted with the cone,” said Christensen, who has since retired from the Arapahoe Libraries district. “They felt their neighborhood was hidden, and since the street changes names, it was hard to give visitors directions, but now they had

the cone as a landmark.”On the inside, it’s a 24-foot-tall story room, according to a news release at the time.

More changes are on the way: Castlewood closed on Sept. 30 for a remodel and will reopen in the spring.

In the meantime, here’s a look at the library’s history and what’s to come.

Hopping around In 1970, Walnut Hills Library opened in Walnut Hills Elementary School, just down the road from current-day Castlewood Library.

The school district provided 2,100 square feet of space, and the library district provided two librarians, checkout equipment and 4,000 books, according to Arapahoe Libraries.

The library moved several times to accommodate growth. In 1971, it moved to South Yosemite Street, and in late 1974, it moved to the Arapahoe Bank and Trust Building on Arapahoe Road. In 1980, land was donated to the library district, enabling construction of a new facility, which opened in 1982 in its present location at 6739 S. Uinta St. in Centennial, according to the district.

What’s in a name?

At that point, the library was renamed Castlewood Public Library, in recognition of the historical significance of “Castlewood” in the area, according to the district.

“Historical research about the community revealed a Castlewood Dam and Lake, built in 1890; Castlewood

Community fixture Castlewood Library serves the population of the Denver Tech Center area and is also a hub for students from the nearby Walnut Hills Elementary, according to the district.

“Young families usually come in the morning for the popular story times, small business owners like to utilize (spaces) and a conference room for their meetings and presentations, and in the afternoon, tutors and teens occupy tables around the library,” district staff said. “Due to the library’s neighborhood location, it is easy to reach on foot, and for many patrons a visit to the library is part of their daily routine.”

Change with the times In 2015, a Castlewood meeting room was remodeled and turned into the Makerspace, which houses equipment for engineering activities. It features industrial-quality sewing machines, 3D printers, laser cutters and computers for software development and graphic design, among other tools.

On the way This spring, the remodeled Castlewood Library will feature an updated space with natural light, increased accessibility to library materials, an enclosed children’s area, a larger makerspace, a lounge area with coffee vending, improved traffic flow in the parking lot and a driver-side book drop.

Other renovations Other locations in the Arapahoe Libraries district are set for improvements as well, the district said.

Eloise May Library — along Parker Road in unincorporated Arapahoe County — will be closed for improvements Nov. 18-22, and a new Kelver Library will be built in 2020 for the Byers community.

A new, larger Davies Library opened in the Deer Trail School in September.

In east Centennial, Smoky Hill Library courtyard was remodeled in 2016 and turned into a café.

Koelbel Library in west Centennial was remodeled in 2015. Sheridan Library was built in 2014.

E-470 ExpressToll customers continue to save License Plate Toll rates will remain level in 2020 STAFF REPORT

An ExpressToll rate freeze implemented Jan. 1, 2018, will keep 2017 toll rates in place for ExpressToll drivers on E-470 through 2020 after a unanimous vote by the E-470 board of directors.

According to a news release, the November 2017 decision of the E-470 board of directors to freeze ExpressToll rates marked the first time since the 47-mile user-financed roadway opened that tolls were frozen. The decision also included a reduction of the ExpressToll rate at Toll Plaza C (between I-70 and Pena Boulevard) by 25 cents. The reduced rate will stay in effect again in 2020, the release said.

“Due to E-470’s conservative fiscal policy and organizational management, as well as increased use of the E-470 toll road, the board is again able to keep tolls unchanged for the coming year,” Roger Partridge, chair of the Douglas County commissioners chair and E-470 board member, said

in the release.

In addition to freezing ExpressToll rates in 2020, the E-470 Board of Directors also voted to freeze License Plate Toll rates in 2020 at 2019 levels.

Additionally, the board voted to move forward with the implementation of a two-year pilot program, to begin Jan. 1, 2020, for an ExpressToll rate restructure for three-plus-axle motorists on E-470. The rate restructure includes a 5% rate reduction for all multi-axle rates and an additional time of day rate reduction for 3-plus-axle ExpressToll customers.

The 2020 toll rate freeze and threeplus-axle rate adjustment reflect the commitment of E-470 to remain fiscally responsible while supporting and improving the customer experience.

“The E-470 board of directors and leadership continue to be proactive in monitoring local market conditions that allow the authority to implement policies that represent value and savings to E-470 customers,” E-470 Executive Director Tim Stewart said in the release.

5 things to know: Auto group takes high polluters off road students looking to enter the automotive technician field.

With about 12 years under its belt, the foundation has taken thousands of cars off the road and counting.

Here’s a look at how it all works and what the organization has its eye on.

How it works The nonprofit foundation was created in 2007 by the board of directors of the dealers’ association. Zeigler became the foundation’s director in 2018.

“When vehicles are donated, the engines are always destroyed, ensuring that we are clearing the air.

Other parts are either recycled or parted out,” Ziegler said.

The foundation accepts vehicle donations from anyone in Colorado, and since it’s a 501(c)3, donors may get a tax benefit. It also takes in cash donations, which are combined with proceeds from the sale of vehicles to fund scholarships.

In 2007, Colorado’s then-Gov. Bill Ritter made a push to tackle climate change.

Among the efforts: suggesting that Colorado adopt a policy similar to California’s stringent auto-emission regulations.

The Colorado Automobile Dealers Association opposed that idea, but it put forth a vision of its own.

“Most vehicle emissions come from older, high-polluting vehicles.

It is our opinion that rather than heavily regulating new vehicles, the most effective solution is to permanently remove as many of these older, high-polluting vehicles as possible,” said Mark Zeigler, director of Clear the Air Foundation.

Racking up numbers Clear the Air is budgeted to provide $50,000 in scholarships annually. By partnering with school foundations, the foundation can receive matching funds, which doubles the award, Ziegler said.

“We also work with Matco Tools and Snap-on Tools to take advantage of their student discount programs. These programs provide students with a 50% discount, which doubles the award,” Ziegler said. “We anticipate the total value of scholarships awarded in 2019 to exceed $100,000.”

Donations to Clear the Air come from all over Colorado, and its largest donor in 2018 and so far in 2019 is the Pueblo Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram store. Most donations come from new car dealers, and the foundation also takes donations from the public.

“I can tell you that in 2019, the average age of donated vehicles is 19 years,” Ziegler said.

Fueling education Most of the foundation’s scholarships go to students enrolled in a two-year auto tech program.

“Also, we are able to recognize employees at new car dealerships in a formal apprenticeship program with a tool scholarship,” Ziegler said.

There are thousands of jobs available in Colorado alone, according to Ziegler.

the average pay for an automotive technician is more than $61,000 a year, plus benefits,” Ziegler said. “A master certified automotive technician can earn more than $100,000 a year if they have the right work ethic.”

Pulling thousands off road As of Dec. 5, the foundation has permanently taken 4,421 vehicles off the road, Ziegler said.

“Over the past five years, we’ve averaged 619 each year,” Ziegler added. “However, we are already at 731 this year. We received the 501(c)3 designation in 2011; at that point, we could recycle vehicles.”

Addressing shortage For now, the foundation is focusing on increasing vehicle donations and getting more people interested in an auto tech career.

“We have a significant skills shortage across the country and here in Colorado,” Ziegler said.

“There has been a focus on fouryear degrees, to the detriment of skilled trades careers. A two-year associate’s degree in an automotive technician program can run around $14,000. Some schools even provide tools as part of tuition.”

o you want better results? For most of us, the answer is yes.

We want better results in one or more areas of our personal lives or in our business. As a matter of fact, when I have asked people what achieving “better” results means for them, I typically hear words like improve, WINNING increase, expand, and reduce. Not sure WORDS about you, but when I think about getting better results, those words make sense to me too.

The next question I ask is where it gets interesting and a little harder for some people to find an Michael Norton answer. The question is this, “What will you do differently to achieve better results?” Think about that question for just a moment with me and why it gets a little tricky sometimes. Just look at a few of the words in the sentence, and you might be able to

see where we can get stuck. “Will.”

“You.” “Do.” “Differently.”

When I ask someone what they “will” do, I am not asking what they would do, could do, or should do, I am asking them specifically what they “will” do differently that will help them achieve better results. Have you ever found yourself in the woulda, coulda, shoulda trap? We all have at some point, I’m sure, and if only we focused on that one little word, “will,” we can improve and increase our likelihood of success and absolutely reduce the chances of our failure.

The next word to pay attention to in the question is “You.” I don’t ask them what their friend will do, or their associate will do differently, I ask each person a very precise question, what will “you” do differently to realize better results? We can always use help from co-workers, friends, and trusted advisors, however there is an old saying that is just as true today as it was yesterday, “If it’s to be, it’s up to me.” If improved, increased,

and expanded results are eluding you, apply some pressure on what “you” can do differently to achieve those better results.

Planning is critically important, but planning will only get us so far. At some point we must deliver, execute, and get the job done. I do not ask them what they are going to do, or what they have done in the past.

Instead, I ask everyone what they intend to “do” differently in order to exceed their expectations around the results they desire and goals they have set for themselves or their business. The greatest opportunity for achieving better results is found in the “do” of our doing, no excuses, just “do.”

Whatever our interests might be, like increasing our finances, getting in better physical condition, breaking a bad habit, building better relationships, expanding a business, growing deeper in our faith, or any other better result we are pursuing, we must be willing to go about it “differently.”

Some of us still end up doing what we have always done, because that’s the

way we have always done it. We do the same thing over and over again, and yet we expect to see different or improved results. Some have said that this is the definition of insanity.

Another definition might identify it as our comfort zone. If we are looking for better results, let’s look to break out of that comfort zone.

“What will you do differently to achieve better results?” Try answering the question while focusing on these four words, “will, you, do, and differently.” Confidently own and commit to your answer, decisions, direction, and execution. And when you do, I have no doubt that you will be realizing better results today and in all your tomorrows yet to come.

hen Andrew Fraser was a boy growing up in Littleton, he knew he wanted to fly. Not only would he daydream of gliding through the sky, but at night, he would have active lucid dreams about flying.

He was finally able to realize his dreams of flying after skydiving 200 times — the number of times required by the United States Parachute Association to fly in a wingsuit, which is a one-piece article of clothing that allows a person to glide through the air while freefalling.

The art of wingsuit flying isn’t the province of reckless people on the fringe of society, Fraser says, despite the fact that he jumps from high in the sky to the ground.

Instead, it’s done by extreme sport athletes who are thoughtful, calculated and grounded individuals.

said Fraser. “It’s what many describe as a flow state, that feeling of being totally present in the moment and really in the state of total connection with my surroundings.”

Like Fraser’s hobby, other extreme sports such as parkour, free soloing and snowboarding take a dedicated amount of training and practice to accomplish. At the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, the “Extreme Sports: Beyond Human Limits” exhibit gives visitors a chance to learn about those sports and to explore the psychology, physicality and physiology of extreme sport athletes.

The exhibit is interactive and gives visitors plenty of ways to experience extreme sports like virtually jumping off a cliff, completing a course developed by the American Ninja Warriors at Ninja Nation, seeing what it’s like to be in charge of a wingsuit — and going into the

exhibit’s Immersion Room, where visitors can experience what it’s like to ride a mountain bike through a Utah desert, kayak on whitewater and more.

The temporary exhibit, which comes from the Canadian museum Science North, located near Sudbury in northern Ontario, includes a touch of Colorado spirit by featuring stories about Colorado athletes like Fraser; Maureen Beck, an ice and rock climber who was born without a left hand; and others.

“We have a really fascinating exhibit that tells stories of real people who are some of the world’s most amazing athletes. At the same time, there’s access for people of every age where they can come in here and find something to do that fits their physical and intellectual levels,” said Tim Blesse, teacher professional development coordinator at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. “It’s a great time out for the whole family.”

Other features of the exhibit include quizzes that help you see how gutsy you are to perform the activities extreme athletes do and videos that show visitors what is going through an athlete’s mind while they perform their extreme sport.

The exhibit is open until April 12, 2020 and is free with general museum admission.

“The most compelling thing is it has me think about challenge in new ways, how to incorporate more challenge and think about challenge in my everyday life. The exhibition just does a good job of exploring challenge and how to do it,” said Jodi Schoemer, director of experiences and partnerships at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. “By seeing it, I feel like a more empowered individual.”

Paintings, photos bring outdoors indoors ‘Near and Far’ show is celebration of scenery

One walks into the exhibit room at Bemis Library in Littleton and breathing immediately gets easier.

Blue skies, green trees, fresh air and sounds of nature surround a viewer of “Near and Far,” an exhibit of plein air paintings by Highlands Ranch artist Julia Grundmeier and photographic images by Carl Paulson, who says his experience as an Alaskan native for his first 18 years gives him a special view of nature.

Grundmeier is a retired teacher, after 21 years at Homestead Elementary School in the Cherry Creek School District. She started after her 1999 retirement with classes at the Art Students League of Denver, plus a number of painting workshops with “wonderful instructors,” and loves to paint outdoors whenever she can, including traveling with friends to paint. “There’s nothing like being on the edge of the canyon,” she observed.

Note her “Highlands Ranch Evening” with an “amazing sky over the foothills.” She has fond memories of painting in Kawaneechi Valley in Rocky Mountain National Park, where a mama moose eyed her while she recorded its world.

And, look at: “Mabel’s Dovecoats” by Paulson, shot at Mabel Dodge Luhan’s home in New Mexico — or his “Delusions of Grandeur” — a young ram in a Western landscape … or “High Alert” — a mama bear and cubs, alarmed that a male bear is nearby, a threat to the young creatures.

Both artists are active members of the Littleton Fine Arts Guild, which operates the Depot Art Gallery. She is membership chairman, he is treasurer and both exhibit their artwork there. “People don’t know we’re here,” Paulson commented about the historic red Santa Fe Depot with about 60 Guild members.

Paulson, a native of Alaska, is a petroleum engineer, who learned that exhibit spots at the library are available and invited Grundmeier to join him for this exhibit.

He talks about going for a drive anywhere after work and finding new places to hike and capture with his camera, as well as trips back to

Grundmeier loves to take her easel, palette and paints outside — “working on location helps me to capture the play of light, atmosphere and true color of a moment in time. Working

outdoors can be challenging, but it is important to have a ‘sense of place.’”

She also enjoys painting near her home in Grand Lake.

“Near and Far” will remain at the library gallery through December. Visit it when returning or picking up books for a little vacation tour. Open during library hours.

Highlands Ranch hospital steps into future of medicine Telehealth ramps up role of technology in providing patient care

The moment a stroke patient arrives in the emergency room, doctors spring into action — the countdown is on and as every second passes, neurons are being suffocated.

That’s why having a stroke expert available at all times is a necessity.

But what happens when the expert is outside of the hospital?

UCHealth Highlands Ranch has a solution: Telehealth.

Through the hospital’s Telestroke program, an expert can connect with patients and on-site doctors in a matter of seconds via video. As the patient undergoes a CT scan, the doctor can begin a physical exam through a screen on wheels—a machine known around the hospital as “Jarvis.”

“Time is tissue,” said Dr. Ben Usatch, medical director of the hospital’s emergency department. “If you don’t get them treated quickly, people die.”

Telestroke is just one part of the hospital’s initiative to integrate technology throughout its healthcare system. Other programs include virtual urgent care visits — so patients don’t have to leave their homes to deal with illnesses like the flu — and virtual monitoring to help prevent things like infections or falls from bed.

The goal of such programs is to connect affordable, easy care to patients while freeing up doctors to spend less time on clerical work and more time with sick people, said Dr. Christopher Davis, UCHealth system’s medical director of virtual health.

“Healthcare has a problem. We have skyrocketing costs and an aging population,” Davis said. “The whole idea is: Can we use technology and innovation to scale the health care needs of our country? That’s what we’re all about here.”

smartphone app. After a list of questions was completed through an online form, Davis appeared in the video feed, wearing a headset and sitting in the Virtual Health Center in Aurora.

In any given day at the center, there is one physician, one advanced practice provider, three to four critical care nurses and 17 technicians, he said.

“We’re making a bet that digital health is the wave of the future in health care,” Davis said. “We want to be on the leading edge of that curve.”

The video feed is clear enough for conversations and even a look into a sick throat if needed. Patients can use these visits for things like a cold, a UTI or pink eye.

In these urgent care visits, doctors are usually looking to see if a prescription is needed. While the providers won’t write scripts for controlled medicines such as opioids, they will write them for antibiotics or steroids.

Some primary care clinics and about 15 subspecialties within the hospital system also allow virtual visits.

Virtual vitals Outside of about 15 video visits every day, the virtual health care center also monitors the vitals of about 1,000 patients daily.

Through machines attached to the patients, the health center receives data on respiration rates, heart rates, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and skin temperature.

Nurses are required to take these measurements every four hours, but

COURTESY PHOTO between those time periods, a lot can change with their patients, said Katrina Doyle, a UCHealth charge nurse.

With the vitals being updated every minute, nurses get notifications about changing vitals much quicker.

“It’s like an extra nurse,” Doyle said. “I think it’s good.”

One focus for the hospital is to reduce the number of deaths caused by sepsis, or a life-threatening infection. Similar to strokes, every minute counts when a patient is experiencing sepsis, making early detection vital.

Through this new program, patients with sepsis are treated about two hours quicker, Davis said.

If those in the virtual health center see that a patient is in danger of sepsis, they can call a nurse and see if they need help beginning treatment.

If the nurse is swamped with other patients, the virtual helper can begin administering antibiotics from their desk in Aurora.

Kathryn McCune, 63, a UCHealth patient diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, was admitted for trouble with her liver. After a few nights with the vital-checking equipment, she said she was grateful for the technology.

“I think it’s great,” she said. “Last night there was a couple times when it went off…the nurse was here in a matter of seconds to check on me.”

McCune is also diabetic and it gives

her peace of mind to know that if her blood sugar is abnormal, it will be detected promptly.

While nurses still get vitals every four hours, even in the night, it’s not as invasive and she can get better sleep, she said.

Techs at the health center also watch video feeds of about 35 other patients per day who are at risk of falling.

In the past, patients in need of monitoring—usually elderly people— required someone to sit in the room with them. Now, one person in the virtual health center can watch 10 people at a time, keeping an eye out for restlessness, tugging on IV’s or attempts to get out of bed.

When they spot this, they can speak into a microphone that feeds into the room, asking them to wait while a nurse is notified.

While some in the medical community have expressed concern about introducing this much technology into healthcare, Davis doesn’t share their worries. In fact, a big part of his job is working to change the hearts and minds of doctors who don’t want to take medicine in this direction, he said.

“Robots aren’t going to replace doctors,” he said. “But doctors who use robots are going to replace doctors who don’t.”

Cherry Creek defeats Columbine in state championship game

What a difference a year can make.

Cherry Creek harped for a week prior to meeting Columbine in the Dec. 7 Class 5A state championship game at Empower Field at Mile High about how bad it felt after losing 24-14 to Valor Christian in the 2018 title game.

The Bruins took care of business this time and wrapped up a perfect 14-0 season with a 35-10 victory over Columbine in front of 12,789 fans on a Sunny afternoon.

“Last year was a tough one,” said Bruins’ junior wide receiver Chase Penry, who caught five passes, one of which went for a first-half touchdown.

“We talked about it all week. Last year we came here and we were happy to be here but this year we came here with a goal to win it.

“It’s hard to put into words, but it’s a great feeling. We worked so hard, and to come out and finished the season the way we did is amazing.”

It was Creek’s 10th overall state football title and the eighth for Dave Logan, who also has coached title teams at Arvada West, Chatfield and Mullen.

It was his second title at Creek.

“It never gets old to win,” Logan said. “I’m real proud of our group.”

Cherry Creek’s defense held the Rebels to 166 yards rushing and 199 yards of total offense.

Columbine came into the championship encounter averaging 39.5 points, 274 yards rushing and 353.2 yards of total offense a game.

“Columbine is a good football team and I thought we played excellent defense the entire day,” said Logan. “I thought our guys executed. We played

PAUL DISALVO with toughness, which you have to do against them, and we just made a lot of plays. Except for the one turnover, we played about as well as we could play.”

Junior defensive lineman Arden Walker, who had three tackles in the game, said the defense keyed on containing the Rebels’ rushing attack.

“The first thing was to stop the run game,” he said. “They were such a powerful team and had been throughout the playoffs and the season, and we were determined.”

Creek lost 36 seniors off its 2018 runner-up team but put together a championship team and another crown for Logan in his eighth season as Creek’s coach.

“I love coach Logan,” said junior

Myles Purchase, who scored twice for the Bruins against Columbine.

“He figures out new things every day in practice and he leaves us another target, and I’m glad to get another championship for him.”

Junior quarterback Julian Hammond III, who was the junior varsity quarterback a year ago, helped get the Bruins off to a quick start as Creek grabbed a 21-0 lead early in the third quarter.

“It feels crazy that we are actually state champions,” said Hammond, who completed 10 of 18 passes for 96 yards and a TD. “We felt that early in the game they were going to try to stop our run game because lately we’ve been able to run on teams, so we came out ready to pass. As a team we played

great. Our defense played great, they locked up on defense when we needed it and our offense played good.”

Jayle Stacks, a senior who has committed to play at the University of Colorado, rushed for 136 yards and one touchdown and James Walker II gained 66 yards and scored once.

Senior linebacker Delonte Dickey led the Bruins with 10 tackles as Creek limited the Rebels success except for an 80-yard scoring drive in the third quarter with Tanner Hollens scoring on a 7-yard run. Columbine added a 35-yard field goal by Adam Tasei to trim the defict to 21-10 with 10:05 still to play in the game.

Creek responded with a 63 yard TD drive and Purchase’s interception return to wrap up the scoring.

For some, hoops season must wait

he high school basketball season tipped off Dec. 2, when schools were allowed to play their first games.

Cherry Creek boys coach Kent Dertinger will have to wait a little longer OVERTIME to see how this season’s team will come together.

The Bruins opened the season Dec. 5-7 with games against Grand Junction Central, Fruita Monument and Grand Junction in the War- Jim Benton rior Challenge.

However, five basketball players missed the tournament because they

played for the victorious Bruins in the state championship football game on Dec. 7 against Columbine.

Quarterback Julian Hammond III, defensive back and kick returner Myles Purchase, tight end Gunnar Helm and defensive ends Arden Walker and Delonte Dickey also play basketball.

Hammond, whose grandfather was former ABA Denver Rockets player Julian Hammond, and Purchase led the team last season as sophomores in scoring with 20.5 and 13.0 pointper-game averages.

“Myles and Julian are always handling the basketball even during the football season,” Dertinger said. “It will take them some time to get their basketball legs and wind but we will

ease them in.

“I expect that they will play Dec. 12 at Boulder for us, but I will have to manage their time.”

Dertinger pointed out there will be two Hammonds playing this season.

“Interesting side note is Julian’s little brother Christian is a ninthgrader and made the trip to Grand Junction, and he certainly helped us at the varsity level,” the coach said.

National competitors Colorado state 5A cross country champions Cole Sprout, a senior at Valor Christian, and Riley Stewart, a sophomore who goes to Cherry Creek, won individual titles at the NXR Southwest Regionals Nov. 23 in Casa Grande, Arizona.

The top five finishers plus the top two teams qualified for the 16th annual Nike Cross Nationals, which were scheduled to be held Dec. 7 in Portland, Oregon.

Sprout won the regional event with a time of 14:41.4. Stewart captured the women’s 5,000 meter regional title with a time of 17:03.8.

Stewart didn’t rest as she ran in the Foot Locker Midwest on a muddy course in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Nov. 29, finished seventh and qualified for the Foot Locker Nationals, which will be held Dec. 14 in San Diego. A team of girls from Valor Christian surprised the field of top 25 teams in the country and finished second to qualify to compete along with 22 other teams for the national title in the Nike Cross Nationals.

The individuals on the Valor girls team who competed in the national meet were Lanie Szuch, Taylor Whitfield, Isabella Prosceno, Ashley Jones, Reese Dragovich and Bri Teegarden.

Vista Nation’s boys team was second in the Arizona regional to earn its ticket to compete for the national team championship.

Athletes on the Vista Nation boys team were Harrison Witt, Davis Helmerich, Jack O’Sullivan, Seth Rouse, Kyle Boe, Jayden Nats and Colin Mooney.

Highlands Ranch overcame a seven-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter and posted a 70-64 boys basketball win over Smoky Hill on Dec. 3.

Senior Tim Brown and sophomore Jaeton Hackley each had 18 points as the Douglas County boys basketball team opened the season on Dec. 3 with a 71-48 triumph over Denver South.

Senior Heidi Haze had seven steals to go along with three rebounds and nine points in ThunderRidge’s 45-12 girls basketball conquest of Pueblo County on Dec. 4.

Senior Amy Holland scored 14 points to help Mountain Vista earn a 58-38 girls basketball win over Rampart on Dec. 4.
