our fault. We didn’t ask to be sick, and it is hard enough to have this on our plate alone.

We could use some support — in the end, we’re people too and pretty cool if you can get over times we would just have to take it easy.

I also wish people knew that people don’t have to look ill to be ill. If I’m dressed up, makeup on, nobody would ever be able to tell I am as sick as I am. But on the inside, I am constantly in a lot of pain and feel gross … It would be nice to know that you still love us, even when we’re in a hospital bed.

After years fighting chronic illness, woman opens up about living with conditions Childhood struggles I am 20 years old, and I have lived in the AuroraCentennial area for the past six years. Before that, I lived in both California and North Carolina.

I was born with autoimmune hepatitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis. Both of those created a lot of other medical problems with my body and ultimately cirrhosis, which led to my first transplant at the age of 9. When I was 16, I was rediagnosed with the primary sclerosing cholangitis and received a drain to open up my bile ducts for six months while still in school. I was then, again, at 18 rediagnosed … meaning not one but both have come back and the first transplant was not a success. I am currently at stage 3 cirrhosis, and when I reach stage 4, I will be listed for my second transplant.

an errand to the supermarket is all I can do or some days I can’t even leave bed … It feels like I spend more time in a hospital than my own home sometimes, and the nurses know me by name.

I have been bullied since I could remember, starting from elementary school … I went around with an oxygen tank … I wasn’t able to play at recess. I would easily snap a bone in half because I had no bone marrow … After my transplant, I got a bit of a second chance and was able to feel like a “normal” kid and did not have many problems.

When I got rediagnosed in high school, I was left in the dust once again. I’ve been accused about lying about my illnesses, my shirt being pulled up to make sure the scars from my surgery were real, and many of my friends left me ... I lost many, many people my entire life due to being sick, but I have also met true friends and leaned on family in those times.

Saving grace Having my mom beside me each step of the way was what mostly kept me from going completely downhill … For every doctor appointment, every surgery, every sick day, she never left my side or made me feel any less lovable just because I lived with this burden ...

She did recently pass away this August, so since then I have been more lost on this journey because it feels as though I am doing most of it on my own now, but I do know she is also guiding me in spirit.

‘Young Chef’ What people might not know about me is that I’m a pretty solid cook. I went to chef school as a kid. Shout out, Young Chefs Academy.

I’m also half-Pakistani, so I can throw down some good Paki food as well. I like cooking and I’m pretty good at it, but I still am in college kid mentality and would rather microwave everything.

My point is this: though time is finite, it can still be bought and sold. Millions of Americans sell their time every day, usually in the form of an hourly job.

Quite literally, they are paid to sell their time and talents. Likewise, time can and should be bought, whenever available. I pay someone to clean my house, not because I don’t know how to clean, but because I get to spend time with my family instead of dusting and vacuuming.

This fact was understood by those listed above. Anytime spent away from their unique pursuits was wasted.

You don’t have to be wealthy to buy time. You don’t need to hire a staff of assistants to pick up your groceries, do the laundry, and tend to the garden.

But what little changes can you make to buy some time?

Avoid social media-

These platforms are valuable for staying connected to a point.

Be careful how often you engage.

City approves updated Jones District plan

One of the most-watched developments in Centennial — and one that’s expected to change the skyline in the south Denver metro area — will move forward with a new vision after the city council’s recent approval.

The Jones District, a project on East Mineral Avenue just north of IKEA that dates back to 2013, has remained top-of-mind for recent Centennial City Council candidates and city residents alike.

“I know you people think you can’t please all the people all the time, but you can’t please Willow Creek any of the time,” joked Neil Lipson, to laughs from the audience at the Nov. 18 city council meeting.

Lipson, who often speaks out about city issues, expressed worry about traffic in the Willow Creek neighborhood area near South Yosemite Street that could increase as The Jones District materializes. The project calls for office buildings and hotel, residential and retail spaces — and some buildings could be 15 stories high along Interstate 25.

Despite the heights, which will put the district more in line with developments farther north along I-25, developers tout it as a community amenity with green space and a large plaza.

“We’re upping the ante here at The

Jones District to do much, much more than anyone else in the marketplace that’s competitive in the southeast,” said David Tryba, of Tryba Architects, at the council meeting. He sees those common areas as being a “community gathering space.”

City council approved the updated plan for the project on an 8-0 vote — Councilmember Carrie Penaloza was absent. Here’s what could change and where the project currently stands.

Seeking momentum The Jones District sits in the area of the since-closed Jones International University, which is considered to be the first regionally accredited university to exist fully online. It was founded in 1993, gained accreditation in 1999 and announced its closure in 2015.

The project — a roughly 42-acre, mostly vacant swath of land — has 306 existing residential units at The Glenn apartments. It would be capped at 1,806 residential units, including the existing Glenn project, according to a city staff report. The project is likely 15 to 20 years away from completion, according to Neil Marciniak, Centennial’s economic development manager.

“We saw (development) with The Glenn, and then it stopped,” Marciniak said at the Nov. 18 meeting. “Nothing else moved forward — that was not true momentum.”

Closer to the highway, buildings are allowed to range from five to 15 stories, and farther west, they could vary from three to eight stories.

Towering vision The updated plan is built to change that. Developers came before council about a year ago to talk about the changes.

There are four amendments: The first increases the total square footage and amount of residential space. It allows a maximum of 4 million square feet, 50% of which can be residential, up from the previous maximum of nearly 2 million square feet and a 20% residential cap.

The second change includes a new pedestrian plaza and more “public space,” which includes green space, and a new “central promenade” along an expanded South Dayton Street.

That large, pedestrian-friendly area is part of an effort to “provide this sense of place where we can consolidate activity,” Tryba said.

The plan also aims to concentrate retail uses — restaurants and other services — around both that area and the RTD Dry Creek light rail station, which sits a short walk to the north.

A third amendment adjusts the property’s map so that the promenade is a dividing line between the groupings of building types, concentrating taller buildings along I-25.

It does so by “creating a remarkable place, creating commercial and office space that will support the economy … and integrating recreational opportunities and amenities for the Centennial community,” the city staff report read.

It will also be required to “phase” the development in so that residential buildings are built concurrently with non-residential ones to ensure the city doesn’t end up with just housing at the site.

The city sees that requirement as an opportunity to increase housing diversity there, Marciniak said. A small number of the units will be required to be for-sale, rather than only rental space, as the development phases continue. That could include condominiums and townhomes, and the city is also encouraging other residential types such as senior or workforce housing.

The developer is responsible for infrastructure improvements at The Jones District and also is responsible for a certain portion of off-site intersection improvements, the city staff report read.

South Suburban earns national accreditation CAPRA measure’s quality of operation, management and service to community STAFF REPORT

The South Suburban Park and Recreation District has achieved accreditation by the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies during a conference of the National Recreation and Park Association, according to a news release.

“Earning this prestigious honor from NRPA validates our commitment to the South Suburban community,” South Suburban Executive Director Rob Hanna said in the news release. “Our staff worked tirelessly fine-tuning our operations to exceed residents’ expectations during the year-long accreditation process. I’m proud of their commitment and the end result.”

CAPRA is the only national accreditation of park and recreation agencies and is a measure of an agency’s over-

all quality of operation, management, and service to the community.

The accreditation means South Suburban uses best management practices established by experts in the parks and recreation industry. As a result, the recreation district is continuously reviewing operations, policies, and procedures to innovate and offer the best services for its residents and customers, the release said. CAPRA accreditation demonstrates South Suburban’s commitment to providing quality programs, services and customer service.

Of the more than 12,000 park and recreation organizations throughout the United States, 169 are accredited through CAPRA’s standards of excellence. South Suburban becomes the ninth agency in Colorado to earn the distinction.

Twinkling holiday tradition continues at Streets at SouthGlenn

anta made his annual early stop at west Centennial’s outdoor mall, helping to ring in the season amid a host of holiday activities.

At the 11th annual Holiday Tree Lighting and Santa’s Arrival at The Streets at SouthGlenn, Santa boarded a holiday-themed Clydesdale carriage to make an entrance into Commons Park, SouthGlenn’s central gathering area.

He lit up a slew of lights on the holiday tree and around SouthGlenn’s The Cube ice rink, and crowds visited him after an ice show, where U.S. national-level skaters performed a skating exhibition for the official opening of the ice rink.

The Nov. 22 event also included Clydesdale carriage rides, carolers, a holiday photo booth, ice sculptures and holiday snacks.

The Streets at SouthGlenn is located at East Arapahoe Road and South University Boulevard in Centennial.

Santa arrived to SouthGlenn on a Clydesdale-drawn carriage and will be welcoming guests to SouthGlenn throughout the season.

There’s a bustling art scene in Denver, but the suburbs have less to talk about, according to Stephanie Thomas, a Centennial resident who is part of a small movement to change that.

“Community — that’s what we’re all about. Creating an art community in the desert,” Thomas laughed, characterizing the south Denver suburbs as less fertile ground in the art world.

“There’s not much going on in the suburbs’ art scene, and we want to change that.”

The South Suburban Artist Collective — SoSu for short — includes a small group of Centennial-area artists working out of a studio at The Streets at SouthGlenn. After forming roughly five years ago, the collective held a yearly Holiday Pop-Up Art Market, including at Aspen Grove in Littleton last year.

Now, the group is set to hold its first holiday art sale in a space of its own.

Stephanie Thomas, a member of the SoSu Art Collective, hangs decorations Nov. 27 for the group’s holiday art sale in early December.

Some of the collective’s artists met each other though their experience as art teachers — Janet Moore, a Centennial resident, retired as an Aurora Public Schools art teacher.

The collective also holds art workshops and is willing to host them for local groups.

Suspect in 2009 Centennial murder takes plea deal With end of Allen Ford’s case, one defendant remains in case of fatal shooting

After four suspects were arrested in January 2017 in connection with the fatal shooting of a 23-year-old Centennial man a decade ago, only one defendant remains now that Allen Deshawn Ford has taken a plea agreement, according to online court records.

“I realize he did not take this plea for my benefit,” said the mother of victim Andrew Graham, Cyndi Gelston Graham, who was in the courtroom Nov. 7. “But I thanked him anyway for sparing me having to sit through a three-week trial, and he acknowledged me.”

Ford, Clarissa Jae Lockhart, Kendall Adam Austin and Joseph Martin were arrested after a grand jury in Arapahoe County, called in 2016,

In the early morning hours of Nov. 6, he was fatally shot, according to authorities. He was found at about 5:30 a.m. on East Phillips Place, a few blocks from home.

Graham’s body was found about two blocks south of some of his belongings. Credit cards and a cellphone were found in his bag there, according to authorities. His money was still in his wallet when his body was discovered.

Lockhart, Austin and Ford were charged with first-degree felony murder, as well as conspiracy under the Colorado Organized Crime Control Act, in the case, according to the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Ford and Austin were also accused of committing a pattern of racketeering under that law, which is referred to as COCCA. Martin pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery and in February 2018 received a 10-year prison sentence and three years of mandatory parole, according to the state judicial branch.

The DA’s office moved to dismiss all of the charges against Austin on Oct. 2 after deciding it no longer had “a reasonable likelihood of suc-cess at trial,” according to Austin’s

defense attorney. The DA’s office also cited a general lack of forensic evidence against him, according to the defense.

Lockhart has a pretrial conference set for Feb. 27, according to the DA’s office.

Ford’s defense attorney and a spokesperson for the DA’s office said they could not confirm the details of Ford’s Nov. 7 plea agreement, including to what charge he pleaded guilty. His sentencing is set for Jan. 17.

None of the four defendants are allegedly the person who shot Graham, according to defense attorneys for Austin.

The DA’s office said it could not confirm details of the cases against any of the suspects with Colorado Community Media, citing that the cases are still suppressed — no documents or further information are available for release. The 18th Judicial District includes Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties.

A previous grand jury called in 2011 gave up on the case after about 18 months that saw testimony from 63 witnesses and more than 100 exhibits of evidence, stating that it lacked enough evidence to recommend trial.

Graham was a recent University of Colorado graduate who planned to pursue graduate studies in math and civil engineering.

Problem with heights is just medium high

I would rather not look down from high places. How about you? I don’t QUIET have it bad, and it’s not vertigo.

DESPERATION The misconception about Alfred Hitchcock’s film “Vertigo” is that vertigo is a fear of high places.

It’s not. Jimmy Stewart’s character correctly identifies it as “acrophobia.”

“Vertigo” just Craig Marshall looked better on the marquee.

Smith The art building at UCLA has eight floors, and my studio was on the eighth. I could walk to the

end of the hall and exit a door where there was an overlook to the ground.

It crossed my mind I might be able to fly from there to the first floor, instead of taking the elevator.

There’s an art museum in New York I will no longer attend, even if I were to have an exhibition (highly unlikely).

The Health Insurance Tax Relief Act is a “must pass” in my book.

By holding off the Health Insurance Tax for several more years, it will help keep seniors’ Medicare Advantage costs stable, so we can continue to afford the great benefits it offers. I don’t like the idea of moving off Medicare Advantage and losing the cap on out-of-pocket

expenses or the free preventive care. I think a lot of seniors would be less vigilant about maintaining their health if they had to pay for every service like you do on regular Medicare. Keeping us on Medicare Advantage by keeping our costs down is the better option.

We need all the co-sponsors we can get on the Health Insurance Tax Relief Act to propel it quickly through Congress. I want to thank Sen. Gardner for taking a leadership role in delaying the tax and joining the fight on our behalf.

ho in your circle of family and friends really prefers the Thanksgiving leftovers over the actual Thanksgiving Day dinner or meal? Well you can count me as one of those who loves leftovers in that group. Whether it’s a late-night Thanksgiving snack WINNING or sandwich, or just WORDS heating up a plate of turkey with stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and gravy the next day, I really love the way the flavors come together after sitting for a few hours or a day or two.

I mean we no Michael Norton sooner finish the first round of desserts on Thanksgiving when the leftover clock starts to tick for me, and all five senses come alive.

And that’s when I question myself, “Does having second helpings count as the start of the leftovers?”

Leftover gratitude works the same way. The more we allow the initial feelings of gratitude and appreciation to settle in and get soaked up, and the more we share with others just how thankful we are for the people, places,

and opportunities in our life, the more we will find that we are grateful for.

There is something special that happens when we do that too, and the sweeter, stronger, better, deeper, and more enjoyable our gratitude becomes. I mean just like those delicious and succulent Thanksgiving leftovers and morsels, we can almost taste the gratitude leftovers too, can’t we?

That’s right, we can taste the gratitude leftovers too. We can see the gratitude on the faces of those gathered around us. We can feel the gratitude in every tug on our hearts.

We can hear the gratitude in each shared word of love and appreciation.

And we can touch the gratitude with every warm embrace and hug.

As we drift in and out of napping between courses, watching football, and debating whether or not a second helping counts as a leftover, we pay more attention to the gratitude and appreciation we just shared with one another. We can replay the sincere, loving, and meaningful words that we all used to show our love and gratitude, our love and thankfulness.

And as we do, we begin to wonder, just like with the meal leftovers, “Do I get to take any of this gratitude

Metro area offers wide range of volunteer opportunities during this season

o matter the skill level, interests or time constraints of Denver metro area residents, there is a way they can make a difference this winter.

Whether it’s donating time, toys, money or labor, many nonprofits in the area have unique and critical volunteer opportunities this time of year.

At Rosie’s Ranch in Parker, horses — used in warmer months to provide equine therapy to people with special needs — need to be walked and cared for.

“We have our horses year-round,” said owner Mary Stathes. “They still need to eat and get exercised.”

Caring for the horses could mean anything from hand-walking them to cleaning out their stalls.

“Typically, what people say is they come here expecting to give, not to get,” Stathes said. “They leave absolutely in awe of how much they received as a human being.”

Other animal lovers with a passion for agriculture can volunteer at CALF — Colorado Agricultural Leadership Foundation — in Castle Rock,

“This time of year, we have donkeys, goats, chickens and pigs,” CEO Brooke Fox said.

CALF’s goal is to connect people to agriculture through education, Fox said. The group hosts field trips, grows crops and teaches people about where their food comes from.

“Even though the work is hard, it’s reconnecting people to the land and just kind of helping have a better understanding of the basics of life,”

Fox said.

In the winter, the ranch needs help feeding the animals, cleaning out their pens and keeping the barn organized, she said.

Both organizations welcome people of all ages and skill levels but prefer parental supervision for younger children.

The organization, which serves about 20,000 families every year, uses about 70 volunteers per day to keep their work going, said Barbara Penning, the director of volunteer programs and products.

During the holiday season, many of the consistent volunteers are traveling and unable to help, Penning said.

“Having a backup of people when our regular volunteers are taking some time off is huge,” she said.

These helpers assist in sorting food, clothing, bedding and shoes, accepting donations and leading teams for specific events.

“We have a wide variety of experiences,” Penning said.

From Dec. 9 through 14, the organization is hosting a free Holiday Gift Shop for the families they serve.

They will need volunteers to help stock the shelves and guide parents as they choose items for their children from about 30,000 donated gifts.

Helping seniors with snow For those who like to be active, there are also opportunities in many counties and municipalities to help shovel snow for elderly neighbors.

Arapahoe County’s Dig Out Your Neighbor program looks for volunteers who live close to seniors who can’t shovel their own snow, volunteer coordinator Nira Duvan said.

“It can literally be about the safety and security for the seniors,” she said. “There’s more of a risk for a slip and fall injury, which can be extremely dangerous for seniors.”

In some areas, people who don’t shovel snow in front of their property can be fined, so these volunteers can help seniors avoid such costs.

There are also similar programs through the city governments in Arvada and Littleton. Volunteers of America also has a Snow Buddies program serving Denver, Jefferson, Douglas, Adams and Arapahoe counties.

For many of these organizations throughout the Denver metro area, volunteers make their work possible.

“Volunteers are the backbone of our organization,” said Stathes of Rosie’s Ranch. “Anyone that wants to come and help is more than welcome.”

Littleton’s Fine Arts Board has decided to add a theme to its open entry exhibits and for the 50-plus-year-old Own an Original. It is “Destination,” which opened on Nov. 22 and runs through Dec. 29 at the Littleton Museum. The board invited Gwen Chanzit, curator emerita of modern art and the Herbert Bayer Collection and Archive at the Denver Art Museum, to be juror for this exhibit.

The board has a statement about the theme: “American culture has idealized the saying, `It’s the journey, not the destination.’ A destination is the end point to which someone or something is going or is sent to. With so much focus on the journey, has the end point lost its meaning? What if the reason or objective of the journey held more value than the voyage itself ?”

A viewer of this exhibit might speculate on Chanzit’s process. While many works in the show fit the “Destination” theme, one has to wonder ... it must have been hard.

Entries included 335 pieces by 133 artists, and 65 pieces by 61 artists were accepted for the show. Chanzit chose work by what best fit the theme and found it “incredibly difficult to decide.” She said “many fine works were not included because they did not fit the theme effectively.”

Chanzit did not see names or prices as she worked through images, supplied with artist’s entry forms. Did the theme make her job more difficult? She said: “Kudos if you’re in this show” and reminded those at the opening that “it reflects the taste of an individual.”

“Landing” by Courtney Cotton, a large acrylic on canvas painting that did indeed suggest that quiet time when one’s plane is sort of floating into land in a city — a magical feeling to this traveler. What’s next? Although one might envision a sort of city plan, the shapes, painted in golds, blues, browns ... are abstract. One can let the mind play and imagine objects perhaps, or simply enjoy the interaction of color and shape. The technique shows skill and control of the medium and brush.

Across from the Best of Show is the First Place winner, “Dreaming of Africa,” a painting in acrylic and resin by Pat Finley, which speaks of sunshine and open space.

Second Place was awarded to “Beyond Ordinary Limits” by Linda O’Neill. Third Place winner is “Wishbone,” an oil painting by Olga and Aleksy Ivanov.

Honorable mentions were awarded to William Rohs for an acrylic and charcoal work on a panel, “Wonder of the Other Side”; to Katherine Walter for her acrylic on linen canvas, “Floating the Arkansas”; and to Barbara Veatch for the horizontal “Migration of Equus Ferus Caballus,” executed with pastels, charcoal, acrylic ink and collage.

about items that citizens wanted to donate to the new Bemis Library. The group soon found another mission, since exhibition space was planned in the new building — and the Own an Original exhibit was born.

Also in the thinking was a way to let area artists show off what they were creating and perhaps provide inspiration to viewers to consider gifts of original art.

Half a century has passed by and exhibits have grown larger, moved across the street to the Littleton Museum and drawn artists from farther afield. (Bemis exhibit space still has an ongoing series of smaller shows as well. Be sure to look when you are picking up books.)

Young musicians in the south Denver metro area can now stay closer to home while pursuing their art with the launch of the Rocky Mountain Youth Orchestra.

Children in the area typically travel to downtown Denver or Arvada to participate in such programs. Rocky Mountain Youth Orchestra will perform at Cornerstone Church in Lone Tree, with additional performances around the area. Its first concert is Dec. 3.

Rocky Mountain Youth Orchestra will emphasize creating multi-sensory musical experiences to classical music concert-goers, said a news release. It is a continuation of what was formerly Valor Symphonics, formed in 2011. While the passions remain the same — educating today’s musical

youth in a creative, multi-artistic way — Rocky Mountain Youth Orchestra will execute it a little differently, the release said.

The goal of Rocky Mountain Youth Orchestra is to train and inspire students to be independent and confident musicians who can enjoy and participate in music, alone and with others in their community, throughout their lives, the release said.

Young musicians will study and perform traditional and modern orchestral masterpieces in connection with the broader context of other arts and culture. It will be headed by local musician David Rutherford, who has undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Northern Colorado. He has been an educator and orchestral director for more than 20 years, and was the morning host on CPR’s KVOD (90.1 FM) for many years.

Creek to face Columbine for championship

Bruins lost to Valor Christian in last season’s title game

Turnovers, a goal line stand and explosive plays were all involved in Cherry Creek’s 14-7 semifinal state playoff victory over Pomona on Nov. 30, which pushed the Bruins into the Class 5A state championship game.

Creek (13-0) will be seeking its 10th state championship when the Bruins face Columbine (11-2) in a 2:30 p.m. game on Dec. 7 at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver.

It will be Creek’s second straight appearance in the title game after losing to Valor Christian last season.

“It’s no mystery,” Creek coach Dave Logan said. “We are going to be in a dogfight. Anytime you play Columbine you are in for a physical battle.

We have to lick our wounds and come back with a good week of preparation.”

Columbine is 5-0 in state championship games under coach Andy Lowry, and included in those five titles was a 21-14 win over Creek in 1999.

game and average 353 yards of total offense while giving up 14.1 points per game. Creek scores 36.3 points and

allows 9.8 a game.

“We lost last year and we want sweet revenge,” said Creek junior Myles

Purchase, who played a key role in the win over Pomona.

The semifinal game was played on a cold night at the Stutler Bowl in Greenwood Village. The contest had been scheduled to be played at the North Area Athletic Complex but was moved because the field was unplayable.

Pomona dominated early in the game, but two first-quarter turnovers hurt the Panthers. Purchase recovered a fumble at the Creek 14-yard line to stall a Pomona drive and Chavis Nourse fell on a fumbled pass reception at the Bruins’ 21-yard line on the Panthers’ next possession.

“I thought Pomona outplayed us in the first half but we talked about it all week long that in a game like that it is a 48-minute game,” said Logan. “It was sort of an old fashioned, hardnosed football game.”

Pomona got to the Creek 3-yard line but couldn’t score on fourth down and turned the ball over with 5:23 to play in the first half, which turned out to be a 14-point turnaround.

On the second play after the goal line stand, Purchase took a snap from the wildcat formation and went 90 yards for a TD to put Creek ahead 7-0.

In high school races this fall, Cole Sprout and Riley Stewart set themselves apart from any challengers and were named the 2019 Colorado Community Media Boys and Girls Cross Country Runners of the Year.

Sprout, a senior at Valor Christian, wrapped up his high school career on Oct. 26 by winning his third state title at the CHSAA state cross country championships. He broke his own state record with a 15:12 clocking in a runaway victory.

It was his second straight 5A individual and third overall since he captured the 4A state crown in 2017 with a record time.

Stewart, a Cherry Creek sophomore who was fifth last season, also led from wire-to-wire in capturing the 5A girls state championship with a time of 18:12, which was 12 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. She

helped Creek finish second in the team standings behind Arapahoe.

For the past three seasons, no runner in the state has been able to match up against the dominant Sprout.

“It’s going to be weird not running here anymore,” said Sprout. “I was pleased with my season. I ran some really quick times and ran competitively and won state, which was three awesome accomplishments that I was shooting for.

“Yeah, the state record was definitely on my mind, and you never know how a race is going to unfold. Yeah, I started to think about my legacy. It’s going to be cool to see how it stacks up the next few years until somebody knocks it down.”

Stewart also had almost no regrets about the high school season.

“I was really happy with my season,” she said. “I had the opportunity to run in a national race and that was fun and I had a lot of prs (personal records) this season so overall I think it was a great season.

“I wanted to win state as an individual and win as a team and it was a little unfortunate that we didn’t (second place). We have to come out hungry as a team and try to win next year.”

I had to execute and do my job,” said Purchase, a defensive back and punt returner. “I had a lane, cut off one guy and I was just gone. Free from there.”

Creek added some wrinkles to its offense for the game — and playing Purchase on offense was one of them.

“At this point of the game you are trying to get the ball into the hands of your best player and he certainly is one of our best players,” said Logan.

Cherry Creek put together a 95-yard scoring drive to increase its lead to 14-0 with 1:55 to play in the third quarter when quarterback Julian

Hammond III hooked up with Gunnar Helm on a 19-yard TD pass.

Pomona finally scored on a fourth down, 1-yard pass from Brady Ritzman to Jack Pospisil with 4:31 to play and still had plenty of time remaining for a comeback.

The Panthers were at the Creek 34yard line with less than two minutes to play but linebacker Jack Adams intercepted a tipped pass to seal the

victory for the Bruins.

“Our defense is really poised,” said Purchase. “We know to bend and not break and we did that. We got an interception at the end to close the game.”

Purchase finished with 91 yards rushing on nine carries. Hammond III had a season-high 65 yards rushing and was 10-of-14 passing for 55 yards and one TD.
