Open space department completes barn preservation 17 Mile House project possible thanks to $200,000 grant from History Colorado State Historical Fund STAFF REPORT

Arapahoe County Open Spaces has finished a seven-month project designed to stabilize and preserve the historic 17 Mile House barn. History Colorado provided a $200,000 grant from the State Historical Fund to help with the preservation project.

17 Mile House is one of two mile houses in Colorado — the other being Four Mile House in Glendale — that remain in their original locations and settings. These houses served as way stations for travelers headed toward Denver as Westward Expansion lured people to the territory that would become Colorado. The houses were named according to their distance from the downtown Denver intersection of Broadway and Colfax Avenue.

Constructed in the 1870s, 17 Mile House was a rest stop for pioneers making their way west along wagon

routes. Once railroads replaced stagecoaches as the preferred mode of travel, the 33-acre property became a working farm.

It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and acquired by Arapahoe County in 2001.

Now the county-designated heritage area includes a historic house, red barn, silo and milk shed.

Time and the elements had taken a toll on the barn, making it unsafe for public access. The restoration project used the History Colorado grant to fund a series of improvements, including structural beam repairs, rafter and joist repairs, rebuilt walls and portions of the foundation, restored fascias around the barn, new roof with skylights and a lightning protection system and newly painted exterior.

By making these upgrades, Arapahoe County Open Spaces ensures that 17 Mile House will remain accessible to visitors for the next century.

Now that the renovation is complete, the barn will display historic farm equipment and reopen for tours, educational events, and agricultural demonstrations. To find out more information about the project and see a visitors guide for the entire 17 Mile House Farm Park, visit www.arapahoegov.com.

There’s a certain rush I get when I’m 8,000 degrees between two pieces of metal, and the possibilities of what I can create are endless.

When it comes to permanently fusing metal, you get a certain sense of pride in the work you’ve done as if you’ve put a piece of yourself into your work.

Shaping own future The market and demand for blue-collar jobs is very high at the moment, and I’ve always had a very deep connection to metal as a material of the Earth. I love to fabricate and be self-reliant — it’s very rewarding when you can step back and look at a dependable piece that you created all by yourself. It was a big decision for me on whether or not to go to a regular college, but I wanted to do something I could always fall back on. Besides, college isn’t going anywhere.

When it comes to welding engineering, the options are limitless.

When I graduate, I intend on doing some light contracting jobs on the side while I start a small local welding and fabrication business. The end goal is to have a successful business on the side while I pursue other business ventures.

Coming from Arapahoe High I’ve always felt as a sort of an outcast when it came to being social, and high school was a great steppingstone in how to learn about meeting the right people that can really influence your life. My mom always told me, ‘If you can find one genuine friend in this life, you’re extremely lucky because they’re in high demand.’ That genuine person for me was Stephen, and I will always be grateful for a friend I can call my brother.

High school for me had plenty of ups and downs, but at the end of the day, no matter what the experience, it’s how you come back from it and learn that will make you who you are.

Advice to Arapahoe seniors Don’t rush! The world puts so much pressure on us to make lifechanging decisions at such a young age. If you have a dedicated plan, always be prepared for it to change — you never know who will come into your life and change the course of everything! Every day is an experience. The day you graduate from high school is the day you really start to make decisions for yourself.

Breaking down Centennial’s 2020 budget County Line Road to be widened; city eyes connecting Budget basics fiber network regionally

In a city that sees traffic from some of the Denver metro area’s biggest roadways, the 2020 budget puts transportation funding front and center.

“In order to more clearly communicate the infrastructure responsibilities of the City of Centennial, the creation of a Street Fund is proposed,” a fact sheet from City Manager Matt Sturgeon read.

While it doesn’t overhaul large amounts of money toward street projects that would have been spent in other ways, the Street Fund will realign street-focused revenues and spending to better serve such projects.

Elsewhere, a slew of trail initiatives, sidewalk gap fill-ins and an effort that could connect the city’s fiber-optic cable network to regional partners are all set to receive funding.

Here are the details on some major takeaways from the budget, which the city council approved on Nov. 4.

City stays cash-only At about 19 years old, Centennial is still sticking to its long-term strategy of avoiding debt, but it’s unclear how that will jell with shortfalls in the

Revenue, or the money the city takes in, is estimated at $91.1 million for Centennial’s 2020 budget, up about 8% — or $6.5 million — from last year’s adopted budget. That increase is mostly thanks to an agreement with Arapahoe County for open space funding, although growth from other revenue sources is also expected.

The budget includes $102.4 million in spending, about 17% more than last year’s adopted budget — although 2019’s amended budget clocked in at about $108 million. However, projected spending for 2019 comes in at about $84 million.

According to Thomas Bryan, a member of the Centennial Budget Committee, that’s because governments often approve money that may not be spent for the designated year, considering that projects slow down due to factors such as weather.

For example: “What was approved in 2018 didn’t all get spent, but that isn’t all known until you approve the 2019 budget. So what isn’t spent rolls over to the next year,” Bryan said.

The overall fund balance — money the city will have saved up after its spending in 2020 — is estimated at about $83 million.

As in prior years, the city’s spending exceeds its revenues due to use of money from the fund balance to pay for infrastructure projects — a result of the city’s practice to save for such projects instead of taking on debt.

The city council adopted the budget on Nov. 4. Under city law, the city council has until mid-December to approve any changes.

Centennial’s capital funds are spent on infrastructure for transportation and safety, along with maintenance of city facilities like the Centennial Civic Center.

The city has projected a need of about $106 million in anticipated projects from 2019 to 2028, according to Allison Wittern, city spokeswoman. The gap in funding could be $20 million to $30 million in the long range, Allison said in early 2019.

Thomas Bryan, a citizen member of the Centennial Budget Committee, said one of the biggest contributors to that gap is the city’s model of not debtfinancing its infrastructure.

“What we can do on an annual basis is limited because we’re using cash on hand,” said Bryan, adding that whether the city will take on debt down the road is a more philosophical discussion to be had at the city council level. Citizens would have to approve the issuance of debt, he continued.

The city “continues to plan for its capital needs in a manner that does not incur debt by saving for future projects and pursuing funding opportunities or partnership when appropriate,” Wittern said.

‘Proactive maintenance’ A large chunk of the budget — about $22 million, or about one-fifth of its spending total — goes to the new Street Fund, slated for projects such as intersection improvements and two particularly large efforts.

One is the widening of East County Line Road from University Boulevard to Broadway in cooperation with Douglas County and the City of Littleton. That road will eventually be four lanes, according to the budget.

The other is the widening of the East Arapahoe Road bridge over Big Dry Creek — near University Boule-

Unleashing potential Centennial also wants to better plan for development around the Dry Creek light rail station near East Dry Creek Road and Interstate 25, carving out some money in the budget for that effort.

“There is an opportunity to consider changes to our regulations in order to both enable and encourage connected infrastructure from the ground up,” the budget read.

In a push to render the site capable of competing with other “desirable development sites” in the south metro area, the city will examine how it can change its incentive strategies, too. Afterward, potential changes to Centennial’s regulations could be reviewed for consideration citywide.

It’s all part of the effort to create a “future ready city government,” according to the budget.

Blazing trails This year’s open space funding includes a rolling over of unspent money for the Orchard Road Trail; construction and design on the Lone Tree Creek Trail, which will eventually stretch from East Broncos Parkway near Centennial Airport all the way to Cherry Creek State Park; design of the 17-mile East-West Trail, expected to stretch from E-470 and Arapahoe Road to Broadway; and work on the Fremont Trail, which will ultimately stretch from the Lone Tree Creek Trail all the way to the Cherry Creek Trail.

Open space funding also includes improvements to the Parker Jordan Centennial Open Space along South Parker Road.

Money is also set aside in the budget to complete sidewalk segments around the city.

Spreading the fiber One budget effort paves the way for Centennial to regionally connect its fiber network to neighboring municipal networks, internet service providers or government facilities.

Fiber communication generally works by sending beams of light down thin strands of glass or plastic, contained in a casing and running underground.

Centennial’s fiber system runs through the middle of the city — roughly from Interstate 25 to South Jordan Road — and through Centennial’s east and west parts. The technology enables faster internet and broadens possibilities for public infrastructure.

Centennial is participating in what the budget calls a South Metro Fiber Consortium that is identifying gaps and opportunities for connections.

Some examples could include broadband connectivity between Centennial and the Arapahoe County Administration Building, the county sheriff ’s office and Littleton or other neighboring government facilities.

Centennial will only expand the network if it presents a value for the city and its residents, the budget said.

Drivers of electric cars who need to recharge can now do so at two sites in Centennial.

The two electric vehicle charging stations were funded through a Charge Ahead Colorado grant from the Regional Air Quality Council.

They are at Centennial Civic Center,

Eagle St. They are open to the public, and customers will be charged 15 cents per kWh for the first two hours of use, and $1.50 per hour after the first two hours. Arapahoe County clerk vows reviews after criticism Joan Lopez drew heat amid inquiries about ballot counting, fairness

Arapahoe County Clerk and Recorder Joan Lopez vowed to review her office’s processes and procedures after drawing criticism for ballot-processing times in the Nov. 5 election.

“We recognize that there has been frustration with the time it has taken to process all the ballots,” a statement attributed to Lopez, sent on Nov. 8, reads in part. “Once the 2019 election is complete, we will review our processes and procedures with all of the County’s relevant stakeholders. My staff and I are fully dedicated to conducting fair and transparent elections that ensure all Arapahoe County voices are heard, and we will continue honing and improving our operations as needed.”

The statement cited “record-breaking turnout for an off-year contest,” saying the election saw 42% voter turnout and nearly 60% of ballots returned on Election Day. A correction sent out the next day said 60% of ballots were actually returned in the final two days of the election.

The statement followed a flurry of attention on Lopez, a Democrat, after

“I think it is very partisan right now as far as the political climate,” Lopez responded. “I don’t know how to answer that.”

In an interview with Colorado Community Media days later, Lopez said she fumbled the answer because of how “taken aback” she was at the reporter’s question.

“I had just finished giving that reporter a tour of the process and showing the bipartisan teams on every detail,” Lopez said. “Are you kidding me? My staff is fully dedicated to a fair process. I thought it was an

odd question.”

Lopez defended the time it took to count ballots, saying that her own election in 2018, in which she narrowly defeated incumbent Matt Crane, was not called until several days after the election.

This year’s situation drew the attention of Secretary of State Jena Griswold, whose office sent observers to Arapahoe County’s ballot-processing facility.

“The secretary was aware that people in the community were concerned,” said Serena Woods, a spokesperson for the Secretary of State’s office. “We sent staff members to reassure voters.”

The two observers reported no irregularities in tabulation, Woods said, and said the time it took to count ballots was “pretty typical.”

Sending observers to county election facilities isn’t unusual, Woods added.

The timing of the ballot counts took on a greater significance in the days after the election as the Aurora mayor’s race drew down to a dead heat, with former Congressman Mike Coffman just a few hundred votes ahead of candidate Omar Montgomery.

Tensions climbed even higher when officials discovered 828 replacement ballots in Denver and Arapahoe counties had not been delivered to voters until Election Day, despite sitting in a Postal Service warehouse for several days, Woods said.

Of the 828 ballots, Woods said, 664 included the Aurora mayor’s race. Of those 664, 141 cast a ballot.

With a margin of a little more than 200 votes in unofficial results, Coffman declared victory in the race on Nov. 14, though Montgomery did not officially concede until four days later.

The swirl of criticism around Lopez follows a year in which she has drawn heat for a number of actions characterized as partisan, including endorsing Aurora City Council candidate Juan Marcano, a fellow Democrat, and donating to his campaign in the officially nonpartisan race.

The move prompted Aurora’s election commission and city council to explore running their own election, though the idea was later dropped.

Asked about the endorsement, Lopez said she didn’t think her actions were “appropriate.”

“It’s nothing that hasn’t been done in the past, and there’s nothing illegal about it,” Lopez said. “But I understand how it looks, and I’ve told everyone who asks about it that it won’t happen again.”

Lopez also apologized on Twitter in September for a flier printed by her office, and distributed at Aurora’s Global Fest celebration, that included the phrase “vote early and vote often,” a phrase generally interpreted as a joke about voter fraud.

“We apologize for any upset this may have caused!” Lopez tweeted.

Streets at SouthGlenn kicks off holidays with tree lighting

anta Claus will make a grand entrance into Commons Park aboard a holiday-themed Clydesdale carriage at the Streets at SouthGlenn’s annual holiday tree-lighting celebration.

Holiday events and entertainment will begin at 6 p.m. Nov. 22. Santa will light up thousands of lights on the tree and surrounding areas. U.S. National level skaters will perform an exhibition for the official opening of The Cube.

Santa will be available for visits in guest services immediately following the ice show.

More than 250 families, totaling 1,068 people, are signed up for the holiday program at Integrated Family Community Services — formerly Interfaith — the assistance agency that has kept bellies full and lights on for people in dire straits for decades.

The recipients come from a variety of backgrounds, said Sarah Rutledge, IFCS’ associate development director: single parents and their children, veterans, the elderly and disabled. A sizable majority have jobs, Rutledge said, but skyrocketing housing prices and stagnant wages have pushed them to the margins.

For people struggling to stay afloat, celebrating the holidays can be a vital respite, said Todd McPherson,

the end of a stressful year. We can all help them get there.”

“The goal here is to give people a hand up, not a hand out,” McPherson said. “The idea is, if we help you cover the holidays, you can save your money to put toward that car repair or that doctor bill hanging over your head.”

It’s a great way for the community to take care of itself, he said.

“We’re telling people in need that they matter, and that the community wants them to have better lives and overcome obstacles,” Mc Pherson said.

People who signed up for the holiday program will receive one box of food for Thanksgiving, and another for Christmas or other December holidays, McPherson said. Families also signed up to receive gifts.

For those in need who didn’t sign up by the deadline at the end of October, it’s not too late, McPherson said.

“Give us a call, and we’ll set you up with one of our case managers,” McPherson said.

For those who would like to pitch in, by far the best way is with a cash donation, McPherson said. Donors can also give gift cards, food items, or call to ask about volunteering opportunities.

People can also set up food drives at their workplaces, McPherson said, or ask their companies about matching charitable donations.

For those who would like to donate toys, IFCS prefers gifts under $30, Rutledge said, with a preference for old-fashioned or low-tech toys.

“We really love gifts that help kids develop,” Rutledge said, including science kits, art supplies, sports gear or bike helmets.

IFCS doesn’t allow video games as gifts, she said.

Information about receiving assistance, or on giving donations is available on the agency’s website. In addition to monetary donations, IFCS welcomes volunteers for a variety of roles. ing items like Snuggies and candles, or useful items like work gloves, tools, or hats and scarves.

“We ask adults what they’d like for Christmas, and many of them draw a blank and say ‘nobody’s ever asked me that,’” Rutledge said. “For our seniors, one of the more common answers is laundry soap.”

IFCS doesn’t want secondhand items, McPherson said.

“We’re trying to instill dignity, respect and self-worth,” McPherson said. “Expired food, ratty clothes and broken toys don’t do that. If you wouldn’t use it, it won’t enrich others.”

And while the holidays are the busiest time both in terms of donations and need, McPherson said, IFCS needs support all year.

“It takes long-term support to help keep families from falling through the cracks into homelessness,” McPherson said.

IFCS has seen need climb swiftly in recent years, he said, while donations have struggled to keep pace.

“This is a time and a place of plenty,” McPherson said. “Let’s grasp what people are willing to give.

There’s a need, day in and day out.

5 questions for the South Metro Denver Realtor Association Group has new home in Centennial after move from Littleton

When a local real estate organization chose its new home, it was — of course — all about location.

“Being in Centennial makes things easier for many of our Realtor members when they are out doing business and need to meet with clients in (the) central area,” said Heather Hankins, chair of the board of directors for the South Metro Denver Realtor Association.

The association held a ribboncutting ceremony Oct. 11 to celebrate its new headquarters near East Arapahoe Road and South Peoria Street.

Its move away from its previous spot in Littleton — near South Broadway and Mineral Avenue — was largely based on where its members were clustered.

“Most members’ offices were located in the 80111 ZIP code,” said Hankins, referring to the central Centennial and Denver Tech Center areas.

entennial’s flagship park wasn’t yet a winter wonderland, but that didn’t stop local kids from singing about it.

The city’s annual Holiday Celebration at Centennial Center Park featured performances by Denver Ballet, the Spotlight Performing Arts Center and several school choirs, including Homestead, Peabody, Peakview and Sandburg elementary schools and

Newton Middle School.

Jerry Valdez, a 36-year-old from Thornton, lined up with his daughters for a photo of Santa.

Nicknames can be enigmatic, charismatic, emblematic, problematic

M

ost of us, including me, have nicknames.

Most of us who have nicknames didn’t nickname ourselves, and that’s where this column comes in.

Like everything else that we say and do these days, nicknaming someone has QUIET come under scrutiny.

DESPERATION There are even those who feel strongly that nicknames should be banned because, as one psychologist said, they can be a form of condescension, and control.

Three guesses what my high school nick- Craig Marshall name was. It wasn’t Smith “Babaganoosh” or “Lollipop.”

It was “Smitty.”

Some nicknames are necessary.

Mike Krzyzewski reportedly can’t

How about George Anderson? Wilmer Mizell?

How about “The It Girl,” “The Oomph Girl,” and “The Sweater Girl”?

Dwight was “Ike,” and Ronald was “Dutch.”

Manfred von Richthofen was “Red Baron,” and Charles Lindbergh was “Lucky Lindy.”

Louis Armstrong was “Satchmo,” Mel Torme was the “Velvet Fog,” and Bruce Springsteen is “The Boss.” Who was “Yardbird”?

Who was “Scarface,” “Bugsy,” and “Pretty Boy”?

My favorite baseball player was stuck with “Splendid Splinter.” Willie Mays was “The Say Hey Kid.” You really know your nicknames if you can name the ones given to these two guys: Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis.

Cities have nicknames. Can you name Cincinnati’s? New York City’s?

Manhattan’s (the one in Kansas)?

Schools have nicknames. They are often called “mascots.” The most com-

Some nicknames are uncomplimentary, and refer to appearance or behavior. That goes for most of the Seven Dwarfs.

The dwarfs were unnamed by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, the collectors and publishers of “Snow White.” In 1937, Walt Disney staff provided the names we now associate with the dwarfs. I sure wish I had been in the meeting that day when names were proposed.

I’m told “Pizza Face” was rejected.

Here’s a little test. We all know what George Ruth’s nickname was.

Are you an average investor, with emotions driving decisions?

he nation’s leading investor behavior study for over 25 years was just released. I always find these interesting since it highlights our human nature … to make decisions with our emotions.

Most of the studies indicate how poor the FINANCIAL average investor is in making decisions on STRATEGIES when to invest and for how long. However, this study was particularly alarming as the headline reads “DALBAR study shows the average equity fund investor lost twice the money of the S&P in 2018.”

Patricia Kummer The study goes on to explain: “The average investor was a net withdrawer of funds in 2018 but poor timing caused a loss of 9.42 percent on the year compared to an S&P 500 index that retreated only 4.38 percent”¹ DALBAR’s Quantitative Analysis of Investor Behavior Study (“QAIB”) has

confidence. The goal, however, is to become confident in ourselves, confident in our product or service, confident in our company, and confident in our commitment to continues improvement.

Companies would do well to place more emphasis in this area for new hires. Many organizations struggle with turnover of employees. Employees will share during exit interviews that they just lacked the confidence to become successful. This is happening with increased frequency as companies prioritize onboarding of new team personnel but forget to work on the person and not just company information, product knowledge, and policies and procedures.

And if we take a salesperson who has just been hired, has strong presence, excellent learning skills and habits, and understands how to use and leverage data, and if this salesperson has never sold anything before, it could be a disaster if we place them in an environment where the lack of a healthy self-image or confidence could really hurt them. Possibly even ending in early termination because they weren’t trained in the area that will give them the will and the skill to confidently speak with or meet prospects and customers. I am not a fan of measuring against an index, since you can’t actually invest in an index. It is a barometer commonly used for those who don’t want to go to the trouble to figure out what is needed to make their financial plan work. I do caution investors not to measure themselves against a single benchmark of any kind, but rather track your investments against your own goals and strategy. Keep in mind that indexes do not consider taxes, costs or the internal dynamics of an index, and the fact that it changes over time.

Back to the subject of investor behavior, see which of these common behaviors² best describe you: Loss aversion: The fear of loss is greater than the need for gain, and panic selling sets in.

Narrow framing: Making decisions about one part of the portfolio without considering the effects on the total.

Anchoring: The process of remaining starts turning once again as we look to backfill those positions.

Confidence, when the four areas of confidence mentioned above can be mastered, any one of us can go toe-totoe with any peer, any manager, and prospect or customer, and any competition that may be in our way. Now we do not want to become confused here either. I am not suggesting arrogance or being cocky, what I am suggesting is that individuals, managers, and businesses take the time to invest in making sure that our people are ready to succeed and have the greatest likelihood of success.

To accomplish this we would do well to hire slowly, make sure they have the best chance of succeeding, give them a strong onboarding program that includes training on confidence and a healthy self-image, and then watch as they impact the success of the organization and grow personally and professionally.

Mental accounting: Separating performance of investments mentally to justify success and failure.

Lack of diversification: Believing a portfolio is diversified when, in fact, there is considerable overlap or duplication.

Herding: Following what everyone else is doing. Leads to “buy high/sell low.”

Regret: Not performing a necessary action due to the regret of a previous failure.

Media response: The media have a bias toward optimism to sell products from advertisers and attract viewers or readers.

Optimism: Overly optimistic assumptions tend to lead to dramatic reversions when met with reality.

It is virtually impossible to avoid all of these behaviors unless you have a coach and a strict investment policy and can detach your emotions from

your decisions. It may be well worth the advisory fee to design your portfolio, research the best investments and know when to buy and how long to hold.

The year 2019 is proving to be an interesting year in the stock market.

“I think there’s a lot of recognition growing that we’ve gone too far,” Skenazy said. “We’re starting to recognize that play isn’t irrelevant. It’s a building block to learning how to deal with each other, handle risk and compromise. When kids are given the opportunity to really play without interference from adults, they learn social and emotional skills that we’re worried are being lost.”

New era of playgrounds brings more risk, reward for kids

illennial parents who haven’t visited a playground in a decade or two are in for a surprise: The new era of playgrounds is a heck of a lot more fun than the safetyobsessed playscapes of the 1990s and 2000s.

Designers and park planners from a new generation are building kiddriven play structures that are bigger, more interactive and more accessible to people with disabilities than the splintery wood and plastic fantastic playgrounds of yore.

Features that had fallen by the wayside — like merry-go-rounds, seesaws and towering slides — are back,

as designers look for ways to get kids out of the house and playing the way kids are meant to play.

Changing lives “We want to see kids off their butts and on their feet,” said Laurel Raines, a principal and designer with Dig Studio, the Denver-based firm behind a sprawling $9 million playscape at Paco Sanchez Park at Colfax Avenue and Federal Boulevard. “I think good playgrounds can change peoples’ lives.”

Though much of the Paco project is still under construction, the park’s playground opened last year, topped by a 30-foot tower designed to look like a 1950s-era microphone, in honor of Paco Sanchez, a former state representative and radio station owner.

“People say it’s the best playground they’ve ever seen,” Raines said. “A

few weeks ago, I went down the big slide myself, and coming out behind me were two boys. I told them I designed this place. One of them didn’t believe me, but the other threw his arms around my legs and said ‘thank you!’”

Throwing adults out Kids are getting a bigger say in how playgrounds are designed, said Sean Kitners, a park planner with Foothills Parks and Recreation District, which covers unincorporated Jefferson County.

“I throw adults out of the visioning process,” Kitners said. “Second-graders through fourth-graders are great.

There are safety guidelines we have to follow, but the kids aren’t bound by that in their imagination.”

Access for all Park planners are also building with a greater emphasis on access for people with disabilities, said Amber Wesner, the public engagement and operations manager for the City of Lakewood.

Lakewood recently completed a new playground at Carmody Park, on Kipling Street just south of Jewell Avenue, with disability access as a central focus, Wesner said.

“Kids of all abilities can play together there,” Wesner said. “It’s really the vanguard in bigger cities to have at least one universally accessible playground. It helps reduce stigma, and it’s a great community partnership opportunity.”

It’s a trend that can’t evolve soon enough for parents like Stacy Warden of Westminster, whose son Noah, 10, has a severe case of cerebral palsy that renders him unable to use his limbs. Warden said that even as many neighborhood playgrounds retrofit existing structures to add amenities like swings for people with disabilities, many are poorly planned.

All three are built beside watercourses, and encourage kids to incorporate the riparian area into their play, White said.

“Our communities are growing and getting denser, and anytime you can get kids — or adults — out in a natural environment, the better,” White said. “It helps instill a sense of environmental stewardship, and it helps build connections to wildlife.”

Developing bigger and better playscapes will be key to addressing the ills of 21st-century life, White said.

“There’s a lot of talk about how sedentary we’re getting,” White said.

“We know that has profound impacts on mental and physical health. Places like these are part of the solution.”

Music with a Mission series features area performers Concerts raise money and awareness for worthy causes STAFF REPORT

Good Shepherd Episcopal Church’s Music with a Mission concert series is back for its fifth season featuring area performers in a series of free concerts that raise money and awareness for worthy causes.

Created as an outreach project of Good Shepherd, concerts are paired with a mission organization and a “love offering” is collected for each concert with net proceeds going to the cause. The series has raised more than $36,000 to date for both local, national and international mission organizations.

The fifth season kicks off Dec. 11 with a special holiday performance by Colorado Caroling Company, which will bring to life the music and magic suggested by the classic American film “White Christmas,” including the lavish costumes. The quartet will perform the music of Irving Berlin and other contemporary holiday favorites. The partnering mission for this concert will be the HAAT Force South Metro, which serves the homeless.

Concerts begin at 7 p.m. at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 8545 E. Dry Creek Road, Centennial, and are free.

Family fare comes to area stage for holiday happiness ‘Meet Me in St. Louis’ has been theater classic for decades

With the 20th century barely under way, St. Louis residents, including the Smith family, were excited at the prospect of the 1904 World’s Fair, which ran from April 30 to Dec. 1, 1904. Also called “The Louisiana Purchase Exposition,” it celebrated the century since that nation-forming transaction was negotiated by Thomas Jefferson and others.

Writer Sally Benson had published a series of “Kensington Stories” stories in 1941 in the New Yorker, which offered the framework for the movie musical, “Meet Me in St. Louis,” the background for the stage musical, with book by Hugh Wheeler and songs by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane.

It’s perfect family fare for the holidays, as presented at

Town Hall Arts Center in Littleton through December, with a pleasing score and a story about appealing Smith family members ranging from little Tootie to spirited Grandpa. All are eagerly anticipating the fair, but with different expectations …

There’s “The Boy Next Door” who capture’s Esther Smith’s fancy and the wall-mounted telephone as an aid to romance for sister Rose …

“Clang, clang clang!” The catchy “Trolley Song” presents an issue for scenic designers and is cleverly resolved onstage in this production by experienced designer Michael R. Duran as residents ride and harmonize.

Hanging over the family’s happiness is the prospect of a move to New York City, due to father’s

business interests. With romance in the air and reluctance towards change foremost, the family dithers and fusses — and sings.

Casting is strong and voices blend smoothly throughout, with Anne Jenness as teen Esther Smith and Kara Morrissey as older sister Rose, both juggling romances, while brother Lon (Matt Fontaine) bounces through the house, seemingly oblivious to their issues. Wee Tootie Smith (Macaelle Vasquez, a St. Mary’s second-grader) tends to steal her scenes with some regularity and Hadley Brown plays next-in-line sister Agnes.

Caitlin Conklin and Rich Cadwallader are parents of this brood and Town Hall veteran Kevin Walton is good-natured Grandpa Prophater. (Walton has performed, previously with one or another of his now-grownup kids, in many THAC musicals.)

Audiences will enjoy the familiar music and Kelly Kates’ imaginative choreography as the story circles through several sorts of situations and ends up with St. Louis remaining home base after all.

Some tips for Thanksgiving hosts Ever thought of baking your potatoes before mashing them?

Hosting Thanksgiving isn’t for the faint of heart. There are more dishes than you might usually serve.

More timing concerns because of that. More pots and plates to wash.

And perhaps more family dynamics, buried deep below the surface for the other 364 days a year, that threaten to bubble up through the gravy.

Well, I can’t do anything about your family dynamics (if I could I would start closer to home). But I can share tips and tricks I’ve picked up over the years, along with advice from some other Thanksgiving Dinner pros.

Mashed potatoes There are two basic ways to make potatoes for mashing.

1) Boil and then peel them. Peeling potatoes can be a drag (though if you need a kitchen task to give an eager family member, this is a good one).

But if you boil your potatoes whole in their skins until tender (about 20 to 25 minutes), then transfer them to an ice bath (a big bowl of ice water)

and let them sit for 20 to 30 seconds, the skins will slide right off. Then you can go right ahead and mash them.

2) Bake your potatoes. Megan Scott and John Becker, authors of the new “Joy of Cooking,’’ explain, “Baking the potatoes dries them out a bit more, allowing for maximum butter/ cream/dairy absorption and a fluffier texture. You can bake them at the same time as the turkey.’’ A medium russet potato will bake in approximately 1 hour at 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Just pierce them a few times with a knife and set them directly on an oven rack. Once baked, cut them open and scoop out the insides for mashing.

Turkey roasting As Scott and Becker note, “A turkey is actually two roasts in one. The breast is thick, lean and will begin to overcook the minute it exceeds 165 degrees Fahrenheit. The leg quarters, on the other hand, are bonier, fattier and practically impossible to overcook. In fact, we find that they have the best texture when cooked to 175 degrees or above.”

They recommend separating the legs from the breast toward the end of cooking to get both dark and white meat perfect.

“When the breast reaches an internal temperature of 155-160 degrees Fahrenheit, remove the turkey, and

carefully (using a dish towel and a sharp knife) cut off the whole legs,” they say. “Return the leg quarters to the pan and cook them until they register an internal temp of 175 degrees. Meanwhile, tent the breast loosely while the legs finish cooking.’’

If you want to warm up the breasts before cutting and serving, they suggest adding them to the back of the pan at the end. True, you don’t end up with a whole turkey dramatically presented and carved at the table, but Scott and Becker are right that “your guests will appreciate a properly cooked turkey more than a turkey as the centerpiece.’’

Stuffing Sure, you can use a mix, but Daniel Leader, cookbook author and bread baker in New York’s Hudson Valley, suggests making your own. You might be surprised by the bread he recommends, and an intriguing secret ingredient: “I love to use slightly dark, gnarly sourdough bread with its nooks and crannies for stuffing. I cut up a little over a pound of bread into 1-inch cubes and mix with a generous 1/3 cup of local bourbon from Tutthilltown Distillery nearby in Gardiner, New York. I saute a mix of onions, celery, carrots, local honey crisp apples, garlic, fresh thyme, rosemary, combine it all, and add chicken stock as needed.”

Gravy Bill Smith, a recently retired chef at Crook’s Corner in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, has had the good fortune to be a guest at an old friend’s home for years, and his sole task is to make the gravy. He does a lot of the prep ahead of time and lets the giblets do some of the heavy lifting.

Put the neck and all the giblets except the liver in a saucepan of cold water and simmer until they are well done, he says. You can do this the day before and degrease the cooled broth later. Chop up the gizzard and heart and shred the meat from the neckbone. Then, just before dinner, when the bird is done, move it to a platter to rest. Pour off as much fat from the roasting pan as possible, while saving as much of the juices as you can.

In a jar with a tight lid, shake a few tablespoons of all-purpose flour into the cold broth until it is completely combined. Put the roasting pan with the remaining cooking juices on the stove over high heat.

“Grab whatever wine is nearby (I have used both red and white) and pour a generous cup into the pan,’’ Smith says. “Use a whisk to swirl it around and reduce it by half.

Community members are invited to spend a “Night in Monte Carlo” to help support the scholarship programs of 303 Volleyball Academy and its sister club Colorado Alliance.

The 21-plus fundraising event is Saturday, Nov. 30, from 6-10 p.m. at 82 Inverness Drive East, Unit A2. The cost is $20, which includes $200 in fake gambling chips to use at roulette, craps, poker and Black Jack tables. Additional chips are available for a donation.

Regis Jesuit falls to Broomfield 1-0 in state title game

Regis Jesuit controlled play for a majority of the second half — and did everything but score a goal.

So it was Broomfield that ended up winning the Class 5A state boys soccer championship with a 1-0 victory over the Raiders on Nov. 15 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City.

“We really played a good second half,” said Regis coach Rick Wolf.

“We were taking advantage of the space they were giving us. We could just not put the ball in the back of the net. That’s the way soccer goes sometimes. It is unfortunate it happened in the final for us.”

It was the eighth state soccer title in Broomfield’s program history, a new state record. The Eagles finished the season with a 17-2-1 record.

Regis ended the season with a 16-2-2 record.

Broomfield employed a defensive mentality and stacked players on the defensive side of the pitch after grabbing a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute.

“It was a smart thing to do, I suppose, and it worked,” Wolf said of the Eagles’ strategy. They were tough to break down. Jim (Broomfield coach Jim Davidson) has his boys playing well every year, so it’s not surprising that it was tough to break down. ” The Eagles’ goal was a result of a penalty kick by Broomfield’s Gustavo Gutierrez that Raiders’ goal keeper Trey Tomlin kicked out. However, Guitierrez jumped on the rebound as Regis defenders scrambled to get into position and

the senior scored the game’s lone goal.

“That was only the second game all year that we didn’t score,” Wolf said. “That was a little frustrating.

It was fun to watch our boys play. I thought we played very well. I lost count of how many corner kicks we had. We had enough.

“But it was a good performance for us in the second half, and that is what kind of makes it so difficult to lose a game like that. It was a good season for us, the best we’ve had in a long time. It’s the best record we’ve had since 1996.

We played well all season. We were consistent. The boys just knew how to play and as a coaching staff we just tried to get out of the way.”

Senior Casey McCloskey, who took every corner kick for Regis against Broomfield, was the team’s leading scorer with 13 goals and 31 points. The Raiders allowed just 0.8 goals per game and had 10 shutouts during the season.

t’s getting down to crunch time for the high school football playoffs just as the season for the winter sports teams is starting.

Practice for boys and girls basketball, ice hockey, girls swimming and wrestling started Nov. 18, and the upcoming season will be meaningful for at least two basketball coaches.

Samantha Martin Gillmore is starting her second season as the head girls basketball coach at ThunderRidge, where she is startOVERTIME ing to bring back the program to its prosperous past.

Brian Wood will be starting his first season as head boys basketball coach at Mountain Vista, taking over for his dad, Bob, who will Jim Benton slide over and be Brian’s assistant.

Between 2003-04 and 2015-16, ThunderRidge girls basketball teams averaged 19.3 wins a season and captured four 5A state championships. The Grizzlies then hit a dry spell with losing records of 10-15 and 9-15.

But in her first season as head coach after two seasons as an assistant, Gillmore launched ThunderRidge’s climb back to respectability with a 12-12 record last season.

“ThunderRidge has a great history,” said Gillmore “Something we are working real hard on is trying to get our community to come back and back ThunderRidge girls basketball. We’re trying to build our feeder program and we’ve built that up a little bit and added teams to it. I’m just trying to get girls to want to play for ThunderRidge basketball.”

Gillmore believes in and wants to create a culture of team bonding, positive competiveness in the gym, unselfish play, and playing hard with a family atmosphere “When you rate these great cultures, winning is going to come,” said Gillmore. “This group we have with nine seniors is really close.

They have taken on great leadership roles. One of our big things this year is: What is your legacy going to be? In a school as rich as ThunderRidge that has had all these huge successes, now it is our turn.

In 5A football, Valor, Creek, Regis advance STAFF REPORT

Three south metro football teams will be involved in quarterfinal games in the Class 5A playoffs.

Host Cherry Creek (11-0) will face longtime rival Fairview (10-1) and the Knights’ record setting quarterback Aiden Atkinson at 7 p.m. Nov. 22.

The two teams were among the state’s best in the 1980s and 1990s and their games drew headlines, but the schools have not played each other since 2007.

Creek’s defense, which has seven interceptions and 34 sacks this season, will face a challenge in containing Atkinson who holds state career records for passing yards and touchdowns. The Bruins have outscored opponents this season at an average of 37.9 to 7.45.

Fairview averages 386.9 yards passing and scores 39.5 points a game.

Defending state champion Valor Christian (10-1) comes into its home quarterfinal contest against Columbine, which is set for 7 p.m. Nov. 22, with an offense that is scoring 37.5 points a game and averaging 405.2 yards in total offense, of which 239.7 is on the ground.

Columbine (9-2) has a potent offense build around a rushing attack that averages 263.9 yards a game.

Regis Jesuit (11-0) faces playoff savvy Pomona (7-4) in a Nov. 22 game set for 7 p.m. at Regis. The Raiders, averaging 32.9 points per game and 353.4 yards in total offense, downed the Panthers, 2313, in the season-opening game.

Pomona got off to a 1-3 start but has won six of the last seven games, with the lone setback coming against Ralston Valley. Pomona’s first three

losses came to Regis, Valor Christian and Cherry Creek.

In second-round games, Cherry Creek allowed an early score but would up with a 31-14 victory over ThunderRidge. Junior quarterback Julian Hammond III passed for 268 yards and a TD for the Bruins, while junior James Walker II rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns.

Valor Christian rolled to a 34-9 win over Mountain Vista as sophomore Gavin Sawchuk rushed for 281 yards and three TDs. Jack Howell ran for 51 yards and two scores as the Eagles rushed for 342 yards in the game.

Regis crushed Highlands Ranch, 49-7, with all the scoring in the game coming during the first three quarters.

Pomona held Legend to 116 yards of total offense in a 36-7 win. Ralston Valley, which will face Eaglecrest in the quarterfinals, held off Arapahoe, 42-21. Eaglecrest edged Metro South rival Grandview, 28-21.

Fairview kicked a 37-yard field goal with 15 seconds remaining in the game, which gave the Knights a 36-34 win over Cherokee Trail. Atkinson passed for 455 yards and five touchdowns In the Class 4A playoffs, Heritage upset Vista Peak Prep 27-12 and Ponderosa avenged a defeat in last season’s playoff semifinals to Skyline with a 16-13 victory over the Falcons.

Quarterback Jack Hanenburg passed for two touchdowns for the Mustangs.

Heritage (8-3) will play Dakota Ridge (9-2) at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 22 in a quarterfinal game at Littleton Public Schools Stadium.

Ponderosa (8-3) faces top-seeded Pine Creek (10-1 ) in a 1 p.m. contest on Nov. 23 at Echo Park Automotive Stadium.

Chaparral captures volleyball crown Wolverines down defending champion Valor in title match

Chaparral collected one more victory than last year in the state volleyball tournament, but Valor Christian and Lutheran couldn’t duplicate their finishes from the 2018 tournament.

The three-day, double-elimination tournament at the Denver Coliseum concluded Nov. 16, and Chaparral won the Class 5A championship with a 3-1 win over Valor Christian in a rematch of last season’s state title match in which Valor earned the state crown with a 3-1 victory.

“It feels 100 times better than last year,” said Chaparral senior Juliana Dalton. “Being number one all season and coming into this tournament, everyone wanted to beat us. That’s what made us want to win because we knew everyone wanted to beat us.”

Chaparral, which swept Valor 3-0 in a match on Nov. 15 that sent the Eagles into the consolation bracket, lost the first set 23-25 to the Eagles in the championship match but used several runs to take 26-24, 25-11 and 25-23 win in the final three sets and end the season with a 27-2 record.

“I think we didn’t play our best match, honestly,” Chaparral coach Amanda West said. “But I feel the chemistry we have as a team is what got us through.”

Lutheran, the defending Class 3A champs, lost to Sterling in the 3A finale between teams that both entered the finale with 28-0 records.

Lutheran, the state’s top ranked 3A team all season, suffered it only loss of the campaign in the state finals with the four-set setback to the Tigers (25-22, 23-25, 22-25, 23-25).
