Kaiser, unions reach agreement, likely averting strike Tentative deal arrives before strike that was scheduled to begin Oct. 14

Facing down the possibility of a strike by tens of thousands of workers nationwide, Kaiser Permanente and the coalition of Kaiser workers’ unions reached a tentative deal that the coalition called a “historic agreement.”

The Sept. 25 deal must be approved by a union workers’ vote that is expected to be complete by the end of October, according to a Kaiser news release.

A few thousand Kaiser Permanente workers in Colorado were poised to participate in a seven-day strike beginning Oct. 14, following what the local union branch said was a lack of progress in a push for fair negotiation and wage increases that keep up with the cost of living.

The agreement includes a ban on subcontracting and stronger restrictions on outsourcing. As part of the deal, a committee will also advise Kaiser on ways to prevent replacing certain workers with automation, according to Fernandez.

Deal affects thousands Overall, a five-year agreement is what the union coalition was aiming for, but given what the deal included, “I think this was an easy concession,” Fernandez said.

If approved, the contract will have an effective date of Oct. 1 and will cover more than 80,000 employees, including more than 3,000 in Colorado, according to the Kaiser release.

Union employees represent hundreds of job positions, from optometrists and pharmacists to maintenance and service workers, the release added.

Medical assistants, licensed practical nurses, pharmacy technicians, medical technicians and administrative and support staff, among other positions, were among those who may have gone on strike.

Physicians and registered nurses were generally not expected to strike. Mental health workers were not part of the potential strike.

In Colorado, about 1,200 Kaiser physicians and another 3,200 Kaiser workers weren’t part of the current negotiations and weren’t expected to strike.

ids got a reason to enjoy the season on fall’s first weekend in Centennial, running between fall-themed activities and jumping around an obstacle course.

“This is the first year of us putting this on,” said Amanda Martin, a staff member at Goodson Recreation Center.

The Fall Festival on Sept. 28 saw kids tossing colorful rings around miniature scarecrows, bowling with candy corn-shaped pins and making crafts.

“I think it’s fun getting your whole community out here — people who wouldn’t normally be here, seeing what Goodson’s all about,” Martin said.

South Suburban Parks and Recreation put on the event, which also included prizes and giveaways. Goodson is located at 6315 S. University Blvd., just north of East Arapahoe Road.

Citizenship ceremony is Colorado’s largest in decade Nearly 200 people from 61 countries are naturalized at event

The first thing Hadeel Mati did when she officially became a naturalized citizen of the United States was register to vote.

“I felt like after 10 years in this country I have the right to say what I think,” Mati said.

The Iraqi native came to the U.S. by way of the United Kingdom and married her husband. They both live in Arvada now.

Mati was one of 194 people who became naturalized U.S. citizens Sept. 25 at Centennial Center Park, which is near the Centennial office for the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. In all, 61 countries were represented. It was the largest USCIS naturalization ceremony in Colorado since 2009, according to USCIS public affairs officials. Kristi Goldinger, the district director for the USCIS Denver Field Operations Directorate, announced the office will have naturalized close to 13,000 U.S. citizens in 2019.

Just north of where the ceremony was held, representatives from the Colorado Secretary of State’s office helped the new citizens register to vote.

“I feel so powerful to be an American citizen,” Mati said. “I felt I have more options to say (what I want) — more freedom.”

Vinad Chandran, who lives in Arapahoe County, moved to the United States from India in 1997. He decided to finally become a naturalized citizen to help his family and his career, as well as have the ability to speak his mind.

“I’ve already been involved in the community here, but I think this puts a formal touch to it. It’s time for me to take that extra step,” Chandran said. “When you say ‘freedom of speech’ ‘freedom of religion’… (in India) it’s got a different meaning. It’s really meant here.

My heart is still there, but I think things will change now that I can speak freely and speak my mind.”

Maria Garton, of Colombia, lives in Castle Rock with her husband and daughter and has lived in the United States for nine years.

“I’m just very excited to be part of the country and have a voice and an opinion about our democracy,” Gaton said. “This county has given me a lot of opportunities.”

Naturalization is the process of becoming a U.S. citizen after the person completes the requirements established in the Immigration and Nationality Act. Foreign immigrants can qualify for naturalization if they have been a resident for at least five years (three years for to file as a spouse of a U.S. citizen), have served in the U.S. military or

In 2017, the Denver USCIS office completed 7,600 naturalization applications and 9,400 in 2018. The Denver office’s average processing cycle time for naturalization is roughly 13 months. Statewide, the processing cycle is about seven months.

The Denver USCIS office released a statement on the Sept. 25 ceremony: “The Denver Field Office has demonstrated its commitment to the naturalization process by achieving exceptional results to address an increase in pending applications … We’re very proud of our accomplishments, and we will continue to work for the American people to administer our national lawful immigration system and protect its integrity.”

Arapahoe County is looking to sign up election judges, who will perform a variety of duties including signature verification and line tending. Starting with the presidential primary next March, 17-year-olds will be able to vote in Colorado primary elections if they will turn 18 before the general election, thanks to House Bill 19-1278.

The same bill will increase next year’s required number of voter service and polling centers and 24hour ballot drop boxes, including the addition of qualifying college campuses as drop box and polling centers. In Arapahoe County, the qualifying campuses are Arapahoe Community College in Littleton and two Community College of Aurora campuses.

Automatic voter registration will begin in July 2020. Though forms of the law have already taken ef-

fect, starting next summer voters can be automatically registered to vote through interaction with the Department of Revenue or the Department of Healthcare Policy and Financing. The law means that residents who don’t want to be registered to vote must opt out by contacting the county clerk’s office.

Voting rights have already been restored to parolees, thanks to House Bill 19-1266. Previously, convicted felons had to petition to have their voting rights restored, but the new law means if they’re not currently in jail, they’re allowed to vote.

Arapahoe County added a new voter service and polling center this year, at the Martin Luther King Jr. Library at 9898 E. Colfax Ave. in Aurora, and a new 24-hour ballot drop box at 555 Second Avenue in the little town of Deer Trail along I-70.

Next year will see three elections: a presidential primary on March 3, a primary election on June 30, and the general election on Nov. 3.

Amid the agreement and goodnatured humor that are typical of a Centennial City Council candidate forum, a palpable concern among the candidates showed over issues of development in the city.

“I don’t think I, as a councilmember, would support an urban density level that was initially suggested to council in January by the developers,” said Christine Sweetland, a District 2 candidate, about The Streets at SouthGlenn outdoor mall.

The forum Sept. 23 was held by the Centennial Council of Neighborhoods — a coalition of homeowners associations and similar neighborhood groups — and saw candidates discuss topics such as annexation, affordable housing and density, including plans for SouthGlenn and The Jones District developments that have raised concern among residents.

Here’s a look at what the candidates had to say.

Glenn area, and it does need redevelopment, but density is a concern, said Sweetland, whose comments reflected a dilemma for candidates.

The mall at South University Boulevard and East Arapahoe Road is a top source of tax revenue for the city, but it’s pulling in a smaller proportion of funds than it used to, said Candace Moon, incumbent councilmember in District 1.

Developers want to turn the Sears property mainly into apartments, with retail possible on the ground floor, and similar plans could come to bear for the mall’s Macy’s, which could see apartments, office space, and possibly retail and entertainment establishments within a few years.

On the Sears and Macy’s land, 800 apartment units could be possible on each property, but plans for Macy’s call for about 400. The Sears property’s

plan is for five stories. But because Centennial passed a master development plan more than a decade ago that deviates from normal zoning — the rules for what can be built where in the city — developers need the city’s approval for certain types of proposed changes. The city will likely hold another informational meeting this fall, and a final decision by city council is still months away.

Centennial “is going to have another large issue with The Jones District,” said Richard Holt, a candidate in District 3.

That development — a 42-acre, mostly vacant swath of land on East Mineral Avenue in Centennial just north of IKEA — has 306 existing residential units at The Glenn apartments, and developers have said they want to add more than 1,000 more units. Under land-use rules for the area, The Jones

District could not exceed roughly 1,500 units, according to Allison Wittern, city spokesperson.

The project will largely consist of office buildings, which could be 13 to 14 stories high along Interstate 25, but some hotel and retail uses also are part of the vision.

“Getting the sales tax (revenue) up would be fantastic. The mixed use, that suburban-urban lifestyle, is definitely something we want to encourage more of,” Holt said. But “having high-density, 10-story units — no, it isn’t what Centennial’s about.”

Echoing her opponent, District 3 candidate Rhonda Livingston advocated for a “healthy balance of retail and residential” in the city.

The only full-throated endorsement of housing density came from District 4 candidate Anna Burr, but even that comment came with a qualifier.

With the challenges of growth in the Denver metro area, “we have to agree that high-density housing is necessary,” Burr said. She wants smaller, more affordable living spaces, but she added that on something like SouthGlenn, she would defer to the councilmembers in areas that would be most affected.

“concerns about how the redevelopment will impact the neighborhood.”

“This is a principal reason why I formed and have led the neighborhood coalition group, Neighbors for The Streets at SouthGlenn,” Phelps said. The group has spoken with SouthGlenn developers to express the concerns of residents in the area.

Gaps in city map Large swaths of land near Centennial’s central and east regions are unincorporated — meaning they aren’t within city boundaries — but taking many of those areas into the city would require property owners to ask for annexation.

“In District 4, we’ve got two holes,” said Don Sheehan, a candidate in the district where well over 1 square mile is unincorporated.

Sheehan said he recently had a meeting with Centennial City Manager Matt Sturgeon, who advised that annexations require considering many factors.

“It’s mostly residential, so the (added) tax base isn’t as large as if you had business in that area,” Sheehan said. “Whether the city is interested in bringing that area in is an open issue.

A city incurs costs when it annexes land because it must provide services such as law enforcement and road maintenance to that area.

Depending on the type of land, the city may also receive sales tax rev-

enue, as well as construction-use tax for new development that may happen in that spot.

Moon brought up that some annexations can be “friendly” — with property owners asking for it — and some can be done unilaterally by the city.

Enclaves — unincorporated areas surrounded by city land — are eligible for annexation after three years of being an enclave. Annexing enclaves doesn’t require property owners’ consent.

“Ultimately, what the benefit is to the city may not be benefit to the resident,” Moon said. But “we need to look at annexing to close those holes up, and that will allow us to provide better services.”

Desiring destinations Sheehan would like to see more development in some of District 4’s shopping centers, which are “getting a little frayed around the edges,” he said.

Livingston advocated for annexation and possible added retail areas in her district.

“I’m in the middle of Centennial, so we’re always going outside city limits to do what we need to do,” Livingston said.

Brian Beatty, a candidate in the heavily residential District 2, said his area could use more places for families and kids to enjoy, rather than going east to Centennial Center Park.

“As a parent, it’s got to be a much better focus on providing family gathering,” Beatty said.

City council candidate profile: Don Sheehan Retired tech sales professional looks to give back in District 4

Don Sheehan retired about a year ago, but he’s far from finished applying his talents.

“Now that I’m retired, the biggest thing I have is time,” said Sheehan, a Centennial City Council candidate in District 4. “I have tons of time. They kind of bill the job (of councilmember) as part-time, but there’s a lot of Sheehan meetings and a lot of responsibilities. I have the time to be a part of that.”

He spent four decades of his career in business and looks to utilize that experience on council. Recently, Sheehan worked as a sales engineer for Oracle, a technology company.

Looking to give back in his retirement, he became a victim advocate with the Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office, a position that makes contact with victims of crimes and explains to them the investigation and court

process they may participate in.

Sheehan is also a member of the Centennial Senior Commission, which advises city council on matters affecting seniors and provides them opportunities to participate in activities and programs.

District 4 encompasses northeast Centennial, mostly in the vicinity of East Smoky Hill Road.

Here is a look at Sheehan’s policy positions in his own words.

Responses were lightly edited for clarity.

What’s the most important thing you want to accomplish in office?

I think Centennial is a great place to live, but like everybody else in this area, we’re faced with growth.

So managing our way through that growth, I think that’s going to be important in understanding how we maintain the city the way we like it today.

‘Smart growth’ is an often-used buzzword. What does that look like to you?

There’s a textbook definition: urban planning looks at an area that ends up being sort of dense in terms of residential areas, and there’s transportation that’s bike friendly and walkable and all that.

Centennial was put together when a lot of these areas were already created. … So are we going to have

It looks pretty cool. But what the impact would be on the surrounding suburban area is still an open question.

What issue is city council not paying enough attention to?

I frankly think city council does a phenomenal job. They don’t say, “We’re not going to touch that.”

(But) I think the issue we talked M about a moment ago, with what do we do with revitalization or reinvestment in retail areas, (could use more attention). Having a large store empty for a few years, you don’t want to do that.

What is your approach to transportation and “smart city” initiatives?

Arrow Electronics just opened up a lab in conjunction with Smart Cities Alliance, and to me, that is the optimal way to figure out some solutions to problems that are not just Centennial-oriented but regional.

The Smart Cities Alliance (of mostly Front Range cities) in this area, in my opinion, that’s the best way to go. It’s not just one city’s problem — it’s everybody’s problem.

How can the city best take care of its increasingly aging population?

One of the things I think Centennial has been very proactive on is the aging population … Right now, we’re working on a couple different things: Elder abuse and fraud are things that are rampant in older population. There may be some things we can do in conjunction with sheriff ’s department to (help that).

What is the best way to maintain retail sales tax base and attractive retail in Centennial?

I think Centennial in general has higher median income and higher education than a lot of areas, and I think because we’re an appealing suburban area, we attract those ranges. We need to keep that high level of income coming in so it’s profitable for retail stores to be here.

I think one of the things the city could do is not be restrictive in what kind of housing is built. We need housing stock for folks in all areas.

I think, with good reason: There aren’t hygiene or sanitation areas where people are camping. As I understand it, until there was a camping ban enacted, there really wasn’t any reason for someone in the sheriff ’s department to contact them unless something was going on. Now, that avenue is a bit more open, I think, for deputies to be able to approach people with resources.

At the other end of the spectrum, early on in my life, I was there too: You lose a job, you don’t have a lot of savings, what do you do? Centennial works with the Metro Mayors Caucus … They would provide people with the first and last month’s rent to move into an apartment. I think something like that would be beneficial … Having a helping hand like that outside organization is a great way to stabilize someone and have them take off.

Disruptive tenacity destroys destructive behaviors

he push is on. With three months to go, many of us will be pushing through to meet and exceed our corporate goals and our personal objectives.

Some of us are so close we can taste victory, and many have already surpassed where they thought they would be at this time of the year.

They crushed it.

And for others, WINNING they are finding WORDS themselves in one of two places. The first is that they are still on track and have a good shot at making their numbers or hitting their goal. The push is on for them and the effort is still very real. However, Michael Norton there are others who have already given up, instead of focusing on what they can still do in 2019, they are reverting to old habits and comfort zones while they make promises of making changes and improvements in 2020.

For those of you who may have given up already, don’t. Giving up is a destructive behavior. Instead of allowing destructive behaviors to

influence our outcomes, how about we try disruptive tenacity? When fighting the feeling of giving up, we also find ourselves fighting off destructive behaviors. When something isn’t working or we don’t see the finish line on the horizon, we tend to start falling back into our comfort zone. Maybe we even slip back into old routines and habits.

That is why it isn’t as simple as just being tenacious, although being tenacious is awesome, it’s about disruptive tenacity. And disruptive tenacity is awesomeness.

Here’s why. In order to break through a setback of any kind, or to go beyond where we may have plateaued, we typically need to do something we have never done before. We need to be disruptive to our routines. In last week’s column we talked about challenging our excuses to achieve success. Well, if we are in the habit of making excuses, we need to disrupt that habit, we need to break through that destructive behavior, and sometimes the best way to accomplish that is through disruptive tenacity.

If we can look at everything in our life that is holding us back, and

The word “disruption” used to be considered a negative word. In today’s world companies are looking for disruptive thinking, disruptors to the status quo, and they are definitely looking for a disruption in tired and antiquated business practices. Disruption in our personal lives can be viewed the same way as we think differently, even think disruptively when it comes to doing things the same old way.

And you know we do things the same old way because that is the way we have always done them.

Maybe it’s the way our mother or father always did them. Maybe it’s the way our boss or manager always

‘Cathartic’ rage rooms welcome customers to break objects, relieve stress

oasters. Computers. TV screens. Old furniture.

These are the kinds of discarded everyday objects that customers who are riled up — or who are just seeking some fun — can smash, shatter and rough up at rage rooms in Denver.

It’s a phenomenon that may have become popular in Japan in 2008, according to national news outlets.

Since then, rage rooms have spread to countries worldwide, including to many cities in the United States.

Drew Neilson, an owner and founder of Smash It Breakroom, went to a rage room in Australia. As he waited for one to come to Denver, he and co-founder Dustin Gagne decided to make it themselves.

“There’s a feeling of lawlessness and freedom that goes with it,” Neilson, 37, said. “But it’s just plain fun.”

At the pair’s rage room in southwest Denver, customers can take a crowbar, baseball bat, sledgehammer and other intense tools to lay waste to objects provided for them, such as a car hood. The business — which just opened near the start of September — sees upbeat events such as bachelorette parties, birthdays, corporate events and couples’ date nights, but it’s often a way for people to relieve stress from sources such as their jobs, Neilson said.

“It can get pretty heavy sometimes — divorces, family members passing away,” Gagne said of what can be on customers’ minds when they arrive.

Sources of stress in today’s society could explain the rise in popularity of rage rooms, Gagne said, a sentiment that Shawn Worthy, a professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver, echoed.

General frustration arising from lack of upward economic mobility in the country could play into that, said Worthy, a professor of human services with a Ph.D. in clinical psychology.

“I think particularly our youth, young people, don’t have a lot of outlets,” said Worthy, adding that traditional outlets for emotions from generations past may be less common. “They spend lots of time on video games and technology, where maybe past generations might have been playing sports outdoors, where

you would have been able to demonstrate those urges in an acceptable way.”

Taking out frustration by breaking objects can be viewed as an example of a coping mechanism called sublimation, Worthy said.

“Sublimation means taking a socially unacceptable impulse and using that impulse in a more socially acceptable way,” Worthy said. It’s similar to “someone going to a boxing gym or kickboxing class,” he added, and it yields a temporary emotional benefit.

For some, the mark a rage room can leave may be more permanent: some customers come at turning points in their lives, Neilson said, bringing childhood toys and other objects they don’t want to simply throw away.

“This gives them a process to move on and let go. In a lot of ways, it can be celebratory, (such as) college kids getting rid of furniture when they graduate,” Neilson said.

Carlos Malache, 27, recently came to Smash It Breakroom with his wife and some friends who enjoyed the stress-relief side of the activity.

“My wife’s a teacher, and some of our friends are teachers,” said Malache, who lives in Castle Rock. “They have stressful jobs, and they don’t always get the recognition.”

At another establishment with a rage room — Axe Whooping, an axthrowing location — stressors take a front seat, too. People can write out their frustrations in chalk on the wall before letting them out, said Curtis Roundtree, the business’s owner and co-founder.

“A lot of people have said it’s really cathartic,” Roundtree said of the rage room. His business at 437 N. Broadway has been open for ax-throwing for about two months, and its rage room has been open for a month.

Smash It Breakroom, at 790 W. Evans Ave., offers a one-person session of 20 minutes for $45 and a twoperson session for 20 minutes for $86.

Other times, and group outings, are available at other prices.

For Malache, rage rooms — much like Denver’s “cat cafe” — are another out-of-the-box attraction.

“I like seeking out these weird things to do, especially in Denver because there are these unorthodox things you can do,” Malache said.

“I think that’s what makes the city special.”

In fall 2018, area artist Nathan Abels won Best of Show in the Own an Original Exhibition at the Littleton Museum, entitling him to a solo show the following year.

“Within and Without: Works by Nathan Abels” opened at the museum on Sept. 20 and runs through Oct. 21 during museum hours. This exhibit will please a variety of viewers for various reasons: expert control of medium, whether drawing or painting, as well as an opportunity to invent possible stories about the subjects. Who is that person depicted? Or is anyone there now?

“Abels creates works that explore our relationship between the natural world and technology,” according to a Littleton Museum release. “He depicts a speculative future after climate change. In a series of paintings and drawings, climate change is only alluded to in the periphery.

Littleton animal shelter wins ‘lifesaving’ grant Humane Society of the South Platte Valley snags $35,000 award from Petco Foundation

The animals come first.

That’s what Jason Miller, a volunteer at the Humane Society of the South Platte Valley, said he loves about the shelter where he spends several hours a week walking dogs.

“Coming down here means giving love and help to those who need it,” said Miller, an English professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver. “For me, I think your day is always better when it’s spent with a dog.”

Miller’s canine and feline friends landed some help of a different kind in September, when the Petco Foundation awarded the shelter near Belleview Avenue and Santa Fe Drive a $35,000 grant to “support the lifesaving efforts of the organization.”

“We are proud to support the lifesaving work of the Humane Society of the South Platte Valley and hope our investment will be used to make the most significant lifesaving impact possible,” said Petco Foundation president Susanne Kogut in an email statement.

“It’ll go directly to the care of our animals,” Kennelly said. “Not just feeding and daily care, but we take pride in the extensive medical care we provide animals. Veterinary care can be very costly and requires a lot of time and effort, but it’s important that every animal is treated with compassion. That’s what the fund will help us keep doing.”

HSSPV, founded in 2009, is a nonprofit animal shelter that takes in strays and lost pets. The shelter also transfers in hundreds of animals

every year from rural areas in Colorado, New Mexico and Texas, where small local shelters find themselves overwhelmed.

Last year, Kennelly said, the shelter transferred in more than 800 animals from outside the area, completed more than 1,200 adoptions, and reunited more than 300 lost pets with their owners.

The shelter is always eager for more volunteers, Kennelly said, who can fill many roles — though taking dogs for walks and helping keep the facility clean are high on the list. The shelter

Lockheed wins contract for moon capsules Orion spacecraft, developed at Littleton plant, will take astronauts to moon and beyond

The spacecraft that could return astronauts to the moon got one step closer to liftoff in September, as NASA announced it finalized a contract to order up to 12 Orion space capsules from aerospace giant Lockheed Martin.

Littleton-area engineers are the primary group developing Orion, said Lockheed spokesman Gary Napier.

“That development work will continue for a few more years even though the production contract was just awarded,” Napier said. “Once we’re fully underway with production of Orion, we will still have the primary engineering support for Orion and each of its individual missions here in the Denver area.”

The Orion spacecraft looks similar to the bell-shaped capsules that took astronauts to the moon in the 1960s and 1970s, according to NASA. Development of the program began in the mid-2000s as the Space Shuttle program was being phased out. Much of the spacecraft’s engineering,

The capsule is the lynchpin of NASA’s Artemis program, which could return astronauts to the moon’s surface as early as 2024, ahead of crewed missions to Mars.

NASA has ordered three Orion spacecraft for upcoming Artemis missions for $2.7 billion, according to a news release. The agency plans to order another three in 2022 for $1.9 billion, and has the ability to order six more for future missions.

Lockheed and NASA recently announced the completion of the Orion module developed for the Artemis I mission, an uncrewed flight to the moon. Work is underway in Florida on the spacecraft for Artemis II, a crewed mission that will orbit the moon but won’t land. Artemis III, which will land on the moon, will likely carry the first woman to set foot on the lunar surface.

“No other spacecraft in the world can keep humans alive hundreds of thousands of miles from Earth for weeks at a time with the safety features, crew accommodations, techni-

cal innovations and reliability that Orion provides,” Mark Kirasich, the Orion program manager at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, said in a news release.

Lockheed officials said they’re proud of the new capsule, and excited to see where it will go.

“It’s a spaceship like none other,” said Mike Hawes, Lockheed’s Orion program manager, in a statement.

“We’ve designed it to do things no other spacecraft can do, go to places no astronaut has been, and take us into a new era of human deep space exploration.”

18th Judicial District investigator honored Matt Hanagan received Mike Bell Award as Investigator of the Year STAFF REPORT

An investigator from the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office has been honored by the Colorado District Attorneys Council, according to a news release. Matt Hanagan received the 2019 Mike Bell Award as Investigator of the Year at the organization’s annual conference.

Hanagan joined the DA’s office in March 2015. He leads the FLEX team and works with the Cold Case Unit, among other responsibilities. The FLEX team in the investigations unit works to protect victims and witnesses from threats associated with criminal cases.

District Attorney George Brauchler nominated Hanagan for the award.

“Hanagan was the logical choice to head this unit, due to his leadership, expertise, his genuine and impassioned concern for victims of crime, and unrivalled tenacity,” Brauchler said in his nomination. “Under Matt’s leadership, our FLEX team has been extremely successful at locating and maintaining contact with victims and witnesses, and in addressing the many complications that tend to arise in

ACC registered apprenticeship programs get grant $140,000 award supports the expansion of the program STAFF REPORT

Arapahoe Community College has received a $140,000 grant from the American Association of Community Colleges to support the expansion of the college’s registered apprenticeship programs.

The AACC Expanding Community College Apprenticeships program aligns students’ interests with the necessary instruction and on-the-job training to secure a competitive advantage in the workforce. The grant runs through spring 2022.

“ACC’s goal is to energize and recalibrate the talent pipeline to key regional industries that sustain and enhance our communities,” Dr. Eric Dunker, ACC associate vice president and dean of Business, Technology and Workforce Partnerships, said in a news release. “As ACC continues to further its connections with industry

partners, and through additional support from initiatives like AACCECCA, we will successfully implement registered apprenticeship programs that fill workforce gaps, provide businesses with top talent, and lead students to promising careers.”

AACC and the U.S. Department of Labor collaborated to launch the apprenticeships program this year.

AACC has selected 66 individual colleges and consortia, representing 105 colleges in 31 states and territories.

The project, with guidance from a 55-member task force assembled by AACC, will assist two-year institutions with identifying internships, externships and cooperative agreements for high-quality apprenticeship programs.

Tax rebate participants recognized by school board STAFF REPORT

A special group of volunteers was recognized Sept. 11 by the Littleton Public Schools Board of Education.

Participants in the Senior Citizens Tax Rebate program were honored for their 10and 20-year anniversaries in the program, which allows residents ages 60 and older to earn a rebate toward their Arapahoe County property taxes by volunteering in the school district. The volunteers add perspective, history and a lifetime of experience to the schools they serve.

According to a news release, the program was one of the first of its kind in the country.

Phyllis Adams, who volunteers at Hopkins Elementary, was recognized for being part of the program for 20 years.

Seven-story apartment building coming to RidgeGate Project will have 241 units, cost $65 million

Lone Tree City Council has approved a site-improvement plan for a seven-story apartment building to be built in the RidgeGate neighborhood.

The co-applicants, Prescient and RidgeGate Investments, want to build a 241-unit building, with two stories dedicated to parking, on 2.73 acres at the northeast corner of Sky Ridge Avenue and Park Meadows Boulevard, according to the site-improvement plan submitted to the city. The project is called “Powered by Prescient — RidgeGate Apartments.” The building will be west of the newly opened Sky Ridge Station and the Kiewit regional campus, which is under construction.

The project will cost $65 million, according to the SIP. The project is expected to be finished by January of 2021, about the same time Kiewit, an engineering and construction firm, will finish its first phase of construction.

The average unit size is 744 square feet, according to the SIP. Of the units, 80% will be one-bedroom apartments. The rest will be two-bedroom units. Some units will be as small as 500 square feet.

“Some people do want larger apartments, but if you’re young and single,

how much time do you really spend in your apartment?” said Kieth Simon, vice president of Coventry, the main developer of RidgeGate. “Part of doing this is to offer apartment rents that are lower to help a little bit with housing affordability.”

The apartments will mostly serve employees at Sky Ridge Medical Center and Charles Schwab — the neighborhood’s largest employers — and the future employees of Kiewit, as well as other Lone Tree residents looking for a smaller, less expensive space, according to Simon. Courtney Lis, a spokesperson for Coventry, said rent prices are not yet known.

Simon said there will be a mix of apartment types and sizes as RidgeGate East builds out, but similar higher-density, “progressive modern” apartments will be more common in the area. Two more apartment complexes like this are in the planning process at the end-of-line station, RidgeGate Station.

“When you drive into RidgeGate from Park Meadows, you’ll see all this stuff on the corner of Sky Ridge, and I think it’ll transform the look of RidgeGate, modernize the look,” Simon said. “You really want to have higher density, walkability and urban character” in that area.

The proposal includes plans for a dog park, for residents only, an exterior plaza and third-deck amenities. About 1,500 square feet will be dedicated to retail space. The retail

Once this project is finished, the Sky Ridge area, already with two nearby apartment complexes, will have roughly 700 residential units in all.

Linda Watson, a Sky Ridge Medical Center spokesperson, said providing housing that was less expensive was a key aspect for the new apartments.

“Anything we can offer to our employees that is a lower price point and is certainly great for recruitment and retention,” Watson said.

NATIONAL DENTAL HYGIENE MONTH What brushing teeth and homework have in common (BPT) - Did you know over 34 million school hours are lost each year due to children’s dental health problems in the U.S.? Tooth decay is actually one of the top chronic infectious diseases in the country, but is 100% preventable.

Children who experience untreated oral health issues are also more likely to have lower school performance, according to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD). Oral health problems can damage a child’s self-esteem, as they may be less likely to speak, smile, play and interact with others. But untreated tooth decay and other oral health issues don’t have to become a problem if they’re caught early.

Putting your children’s dental appointments on a seasonal checklist helps make sure they’ll stay healthy all year long. Here are some ways you can help maintain your children’s dental health, no matter what their age.

Good oral care starts early: The AAPD recommends children visit a dentist by their first birthday, or as soon as their first tooth begins to appear. Early visits not only provide the dentist with a baseline for reviewing your child’s oral health and underlying bone structure as their teeth grow and develop, but also help get your child used to dental visits as a routine, healthy habit. Establishing a relationship with their dentist and creating a “dental home” early will help your children feel more comfortable during later visits.

“By starting dental visits early in a child’s life, the chance for developing tooth decay is significantly reduced,” says president of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Kevin Donly. “A pediatric dentist can provide parents with helpful information, including how to put a brushing routine into action for your child.”

Pediatric dentists are well trained, receiving two to three additional years of specialized training to emphasize growth and development, special health care needs and advanced treatment techniques in hospital settings. Pediatric dentists limit their practices to treating children, and are prepared to relieve children’s fears, treat special needs children and create a kid-friendly environment. Keeping these visits consistent prevents problems from developing untreated - and gets your children accustomed to these healthy practices.

Just like homework, make brushing a habit: By modeling good brushing behavior, you emphasize the importance of oral care for everyone in the family. Children are more likely to

be influenced by what you do than by what you say. Setting regular times to brush teeth is just like setting regular homework times once kids are used to it, the habit becomes automatic.

Brushing together can show your children how to brush, how often, and for how long. The AAPD recommends brushing for two minutes, twice a day. You can make a game out of it by setting a timer or playing a song that lasts for two minutes while you brush together. By modeling good brushing behavior, you can help your little ones banish the “mouth monsters” like Tartar the Terrible, Tooth D.K. and Ginger Bite-Us. Don’t ignore tooth aches: While 96% of parents say oral health is important, according to a recent AAPD survey, most do not think of toothaches as a serious ailment. Compared to tummy aches, earaches, headaches and sore throats, one in three (31%) of parents ranked toothaches as the least serious ailment. Toothaches can actually be a warning sign for a number of serious problems, including infections or cavities, which can be easily treated if they’re caught early. If a child complains of tooth or mouth pain, visit a pediatric dentist right away.

Limit sugary drinks and snacking: Drinking too much sugary juice or snacking throughout the day can be a big factor in causing tooth decay. Encourage your children to drink water instead of juice, and limit snacking to mouth-friendly options like fresh fruit or pretzels instead of fruit pouches, granola bars or candy.

While you’re establishing routines for the new school year, be sure to include a visit to your child’s pediatric dentist on your checklist, so they can smile every day as they head into class.

At Valor they do a great job of feeding us and getting us prepared. Usually we have chicken, rice and some sort of fruit.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Probably has to be Ed Reed.

He was one of the best safeties, if not the best safety to ever play the game. Just watching him, I learned a lot from him.

What would be a perfect performance in your sport?

I want to give it all I’ve got. As many touchdowns that I can score, hopefully two or three and maybe throw one or two in there. And somewhere around 14 tackles.

ack Howell seems to be all over the field during Valor Christian’s football games.

And that is not an illusion.

Howell, a 6-foot, 180-pound junior, plays free safety and wide receiver, returns kickoff and punts and takes some snaps at quarterback for the Eagles. He was a running back last season when he filled in for injured players.

“I just honestly do what the

coaches want me to do,” said Howell, who was sixth as a 152-pound wrestler at last season’s state tournament.

“I pride myself in being a versatile player so I’ll play quarterback, receiver, running back and obviously on defense, free safety. Whatever the team needs me to do, I’ll do it.

“I want to go play college football so I’m sure then I will have to narrow it down. For now, I’m just going to play wherever coach wants me to play. As soon as I end a series on offense or defense, I just have to get my mind focused on what is coming up.”

What do you like to do away from sports and school?

I’m usually out doing something with my friends. I’ve got a good friends group and usually we are always competing in something, just hanging out and having fun.

How hard is it to play defense with the rules emphasizing safety?

I know the game is changing a lot and they are trying to protect players. Obviously you have to be more careful about targeting calls and when to let up on a receiver and running back and not be diving in on a pile. It’s just being smart.

Which position do you like playing best?

I like them all but probably safety.

Boys state golf tourney won’t lack challenges

G

olf is an individual sport than sometimes comes attached with team aspects.

The boys state golf tournament will be held Oct. 7-8 at Pinehurst Country Club in southwest Denver, and there will be golfers competing for the individual title and battling themselves trying to figure OVERTIME out what club or shot to use, how to manage the lie, adjusting to the weather conditions and planning how to avoid the bunkers next to the greens.

But many golfers on qualified Jim Benton teams also have to keep an eye on the team standings and keep their scores low enough that when the three lowest individual scores are added up, it puts their team in contention for state honors.

The top two teams in each regional qualifying tournament held Sept. 23-25 qualified four-player teams, but only the lowest three scores will be counted on each day of the two-day state tournament.

“You have to be consistent in the state tournament,” said Cherry Creek coach Mark Goldsberry.

“You have to have three kids you can trust to put out there that can consistently throw you something in the 70s for you to have a chance.

And good as high school golf has gotten in the last few years, if you can have your No. 1 maybe throw up something under par, that really helps. You need a stud and a couple stabilizers to stabilize your scoring and give you a chance to win.”

It might be dangerous, but if regional qualifying scores are any indication with teams that qualified all four golfers, defending state champion Fossil Ridge has to be one of the team title favorites after winning the Northern Regional.

Arapahoe, which was third a year ago, captured the Southern regional and a Cherry Creek team with three freshmen and a junior took the Central Regional. Rock Canyon won the Western regional.

Other teams to watch include Regis Jesuit, Highlands Ranch, Broomfield and Fairview.
