The milk can will be residing at Arapahoe High School this year.

Arapahoe’s football team took a 9-0 first-half lead and held on for a 9-7 victory over rival Heritage in the annual Brookridge Trophy game Sept. 13. at Littleton Public Schools Stadium.

It was the fourth win in the past five games for the Warriors in the series against Heritage, and Arapahoe will regain possession of the silver milk can after a loss last season. In games dating to the 2004 season, the Warriors are 12-3 in contests against the Eagles.

The trophy is named for the Brookridge Dairy farm that once stood

on the ground that is now the LPS stadium.

The win raised Arapahoe’s record to 2-1 while Heritage slipped to 1-1 on the season. Arapahoe’s next game is against Rock Canyon on Sept. 19 at Echo Park Stadium in Parker. Heritage will play Thornton Sept. 20 at Littleton Public Schools Stadium.

Temple Grandin urges workforce inclusion, trade skills Developmental Pathways holds roundtable discussion

Local community leaders recently heard from renowned autism advocate Temple Grandin on employing people with disabilities and workplace inclusion.

Developmental Pathways serves individuals with disabilities or developmental delays in Arapahoe County, Douglas County and the City of Aurora. That’s an area with approximately 1 million people, said interim CEO Matt Vanauken.

On Sept. 9, the organization invited leaders from local government, the K-12 school system, higher education, hospitals and the business community to a roundtable discussion with Grandin.

Grandin is a Fort Collins resident and Colorado State University professor known for her work in animal welfare and autism advocacy.

Diagnosed with autism as a child, Grandin has authored numerous books and gives lectures offering a firsthand account of living with autism.

She largely spoke Sept. 9 on workforce needs and employing people with disabilities.

WHO IS TEMPLE GRANDIN? Temple Grandin is a professor at Colorado State University who’s renowned for her autism advocacy efforts, her work in animal welfare and for designing facilities that handle farm animals in a more humane manner.

Her life inspired the 2010 HBO film, “Temple Grandin,” in which she was portrayed by actor Claire Danes. The movie received seven Emmy awards and a Golden Globe.

Born in Boston, Grandin was diagnosed with autism as a child. She did not speak until roughly 3 1/2 years old. She experienced teasing and bullying in school but found a passion for animals through working on a cattle farm and pursued science at the encouragement of her mentor and science teacher, Mr. Carlock.

The Fort Collins resident obtained her B.A. at Franklin Pierce College in 1970, her M.S. in animal science from Arizona State University and her Ph.D. in animal science from the University of Illinois in 1989.

She’s authored numerous books on working with animals and autism, including autobiographies that offered an unprecedented firsthand account of living with autism.

Temple Grandin spoke at a Developmental Pathways roundtable on Sept. 9. the decline of shop programs in schools.

“It’s a lot harder to train them as grownups,” she said.

She believes it’s a problem in a world where technology is replacing some jobs but not all. Computers will never suffice in lieu of plumbers, welders, electricians and mechanics, she said, calling those high-end trades.

“Don’t stick your nose up at it,” she said of trade skills.

Grandin also discussed what job opportunities should exist for people with disabilities.

There are positions, like making copies in an office, that are great training jobs, Grandin said, and for some people bagging groceries is appropriate. But others are well-suited to work in Silicon Valley or as a professor like herself.

“I want people in jobs they’re going to like,” she said.

People with autism are often highly skilled in one area but struggle in another. Grandin is a visual thinker who thinks through images. She struggled as a student and in subjects like algebra.

But her visual thinking helped her to revolutionize the design of cattle handling facilities. Roughly half of America’s cattle are in systems Grandin designed, according to her website.

Her work in animal science and the cattle industry was featured in the HBO film “Temple Grandin,” which won seven Emmy’s and a Golden Globe.

Grandin urges businesses to employ all sorts of thinkers — visual, mathematical and verbal. They each bring a different skillset and exper-

tise to the workforce.

She uses phones as an example.

Apple can’t make an iPhone without the artists who design the interface to be user-friendly and the engineers that actually make the device function, she said.

Grandin said it’s important for people with disabilities to be stretched — to learn to work outside the family and home.

Kim Tenure, a policy education and advocacy manager for Developmental Pathways, said the organization would like to see more inclusion in the workplace for people with disabilities. The organization can help employers find resources to help them make their workplace open to people with disabilities.

People with disabilities are less likely to be employed than those that do not have a disability, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The proportion of people with a disability who were also employed was approximately 19% in 2018, compared to 66% for people without a disability.

She said the trade skills Grandin spoke of can also be opportunities to hire people with disabilities.

“We talk all the time about these jobs that we can’t fill,” she said.

“What do you really need in this job? Is it something that could be taught to a person with a disability?”

Mostly, Tenure said the organization wants competitive employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

“You learn and you grow with every job you have,” Tenure said.

“People with disabilities are the same.”

Collaborative technology lab opens at Arrow Colorado Open Lab may help develop ‘smart cities’ technologies

WHO’S IN THE ALLIANCE? The Colorado Smart Cities Alliance formed in September 2017 and shares best practices among its members on techheavy and collaborative projects.

The group now includes Arvada, Aspen, Aurora, Boulder, Centennial, Colorado Springs, Denver, Fort Collins, Golden, Grand Junction, Greenwood Village, Lakewood, Littleton, Lone Tree, Longmont, Northglenn, Pueblo, Thornton and Westminster.

In addition, Arapahoe County, Pueblo West — an unincorporated area with a metropolitan district — the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the University of Colorado, Xcel Energy and Arrow Electronics — an engineering and technology company — are among the private and public entities also in the partnership.

Two years ago, a coalition full of big names in business, education and local government launched, promising to change the way cities find solutions to decidedly Colorado issues such as traffic and growth.

Now, a local tech giant has opened a collaborative technology lab, where partners in that coalition — the Colorado Smart Cities Alliance — may see some ideas come to life.

“Tech can be this elusive thing — we want to make it very real and tangible,” said Aiden Mitchell, a vice president at Arrow Electronics.

That’s the engineering and technology company that opened the Colorado Open Lab, located on the ground floor of Arrow’s headquarters at 9201 E. Dry Creek Road in Centennial. The lab serves as a high-tech, step-by-step workspace — complete with laser cutters and 3D printers — for developing new products, some of which could end up making changes to the way Denver metro cities approach problems.

The Colorado Smart Cities Alliance — which includes 19 cities from Fort Collins to Pueblo, along with Arrow and other private and public entities — put forth a vision of embracing a new kind of infrastructure, Mitchell said.

With certain problems, “you can’t

build your way out,” Mitchell said, so cities could turn to data and information technology to arrive at new solutions.

To help them along the way, the Open Lab features several rooms that serve as a pipeline for developing new technology. There’s a lounge with a large touch screen on the wall for sharing agendas; a room with showcases and live demos of new gadgets;

spaces for working on designs; and a room with drills, saws and other engineering equipment. A chamber there can even test how a product fares at high temperature and humidity.

But alongside the more complex features, there’s also a focus on keeping a warm, inviting atmosphere, Arrow staff said on a Sept. 12 tour. One space is intended as “kind of a sanctuary,” staff said, where a team can huddle or take care of emails. A conference room offer a noise-reduced space for collaborating.

City Council candidate profile: Rhonda Livingston District 3 resident with longtime city involvement aims for council seat

Rhonda Livingston and Centennial go way back.

Early in the city’s history, Livingston served on a focus group organized by Centennial’s economic development manager to gauge what moves the official should make. She has been appointed to city committees, including for neighborhood traffic management, rewriting the Centennial Land Development Code, and for the first iteration of managing snow and ice in the city.

She was elected to Centennial’s Home Rule Charter Commis- Livingston sion, which in 2008 allowed the city to begin following its own constitution, rather than the statewide municipal code.

She also brought forth a successful petition to halt an allowance for new car dealerships on East Arapahoe Road in the central part of town in 2018.

“When we wrote the charter, I was happy we included right to referendum, but I was hoping a citizen would never have to use it,” said Livingston, a candidate for Centennial City Council in District 3.

“It was interesting to see how that works to have citizens rally around an issue.”

Livingston is a part-time clerical assistant at Colorado Humanities, a nonprofit that provides free educational programming throughout

Colorado.

District 3 is by far the city’s largest in terms of land area, spanning from parts of southwest Centennial to the city’s southeast region, past South Parker Road.

Here is a look at Livingston’s policy positions in her own words.

Responses were lightly edited for clarity.

What’s the most important thing you want to accomplish in office?

My first priority would be managing growth because that encompasses traffic, development and citizen requests. Whatever growth it is kind of trickles down to everything.

‘Smart growth’ is an often-used buzzword.

What does that look like to you?

From the Environmental Protection Agency: “ `Smart growth’ covers a range of development and conservation strategies that help protect our health and natural environment and make our communities more attractive, economically stronger and more socially diverse.”

I think there are a lot of arms on the wheel, and we need to take a higher-level look at how whatever we decide impacts the community and businesses and nature and wellbeing of anything and everyone.

We’re still learning how to navigate through that. I’m not sure we’re there yet as far as saying we were right or wrong on smart growth.

What is your approach to transportation and ‘smart city’ initiatives?

Centennial should continue to work with regional partners to find common solutions. I like that Centennial has already started a pilot program (to manage traffic), in District 3, along Yosemite Street.

The pilot program includes neigh-

boring cities. This is a great start to finding solutions. Centennial should continue to foster these types of partnerships and continue to build our own smart signal network to improve traffic flow.

What is the best way to maintain retail sales tax base in Centennial?

In the big economic picture, it is important for the city to retain the great employers we have and continue to recruit more employers. Those employees will then be shopping, relaxing and living in Centennial with their families, and that will help maintain some of our retail tax base.

I don’t know if we need to give retailers incentives … I think we need to be open to new concepts …

We’re not the owners of these retail centers, so we can’t tell them we want to have a (certain) retailer in (a certain place). Try to encourage those retail owners to play along with us — let’s try different things, and maybe we can all be successful at this.

What issue is city council not paying enough attention to?

I think city council has a lot of things to consider, and not everything can be resolved in a year or two. I think the council takes great effort to manage everything possible and within the budget that is approved … Sometimes council simply needs to be reminded of a concern or issue that perhaps wasn’t noticed. My goals as a councilmember are to be a good listener and representative of residents and businesses. I want to encourage and continue that dialog with the community.

How can the city best take care of its increasingly aging population?

For several years, Centennial has

considered options and services that will help seniors “age in place.”

The city is doing a great job of helping seniors by providing programming, giving information about alternative transportation methods, educating them about county and local senior services, and approving a variety of senior living development options. It is something that will continue to evolve and should be looked at with regional partners and conversations.

How can the city best address high housing costs and the regional issue of homelessness?

High housing costs cannot be controlled by city council. City council can encourage affordable housing, but we need to find developers that are willing to build affordable housing. That can be housing that is new construction and is sold at the lowest end of the market price; it can also be low-income housing … We need to make it apparent that we’re open to new ideas and new conversations, and we’re willing to talk to those developers to see what it looks like on their end.

Homelessness is an issue that can continue to be addressed through regional conversations, identifying agencies that can provide services to help people that want help and educating people regarding the services that are already available.

If there’s an agency out there doing a great job and needs a little funding, that would be OK to look at whether council could help support that … but you can’t pay for everything.

This is a tough issue to solve, and there may never be a resolution, but everyone can extend a helping hand and be a part of the solution by doing whatever we can to support the agencies that make the effort to help homeless people.

Run for the Fallen honors teen killed in STEM shooting Kendrick Castillo’s family received the flags in honor of their son

Kendrick Castillo wasn’t the type to boast about awards or honors, but his father believes the 18-year-old would have appreciated the Run for the Fallen event recognizing his son Sept. 15, he said.

“It means a lot to us because Kendrick was very patriotic,” John Castillo said. “I think him being honored with fallen military is so appropriate.”

During a 100-mile tribute, runners recognized fallen heroes from Colorado during each mile, including veterans, first responders and Kendrick, who was killed in the May 7 school shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch. The school’s cross country team joined the runners for the mile dedicated to their classmate.

The run began Sept. 14 at Fort Carson, near Colorado Springs, and stopped in Castle Rock. It concluded a day later at Fort Logan National Cemetery, in southwest Denver.

Kendrick, who was set to graduate from STEM, was sitting in classroom when the shooting began.

He charged one of the suspected shooters in an attempt to save other students and was fatally shot. Eight other students were injured in the attack.

On Sept. 15, before the runners rounded the corner on Ridgeline Boulevard on their way to STEM, the school’s robotics team, which Kendrick once helped lead, rolled out their project from last year. It was a project that Kendrick helped design, engineer and build.

When John Castillo sees the robot, he gets emotional.

“He touched it and he made it come to life,” he said. “And I know that will never be again.”

Members of the robotics and cross country teams, parents, teachers and members of the community all gathered for the event.

Kendrick’s parents, who received memorial flags from the runners, wore shirts identifying them as the teen’s mom and dad. On the back, the shirts said “Most people go their entire life and never meet their hero. I raised mine!”

When the runners arrived at the mile marker for Kendrick outside of the place where he lost his life, they read his name and a quote from the Bible.

“Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friend,” John 15:13.

As he received the small set of flags from the runners and watched as they saluted him and his wife, Maria, John Castillo thought about his son and how pleased he would be with the event, he said.

“Folks are not going to agree on issues of safety,” he said. “I just hope that they come together regardless of political sides.”

9/11 remembered at Colorado Memorial Stair Climb Thousands gathered on Sept. 11 for Red Rocks event

When the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center in New York happened on Sept. 11, 2001, West Metro Fire firefighter Brad Harmon was sitting in a classroom for paramedics school. He was sent home from class, but his day was far from over.

Harmon served in the U.S. Air Force at the time, and he was sent to the Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora, where he stayed the night.

“Life stops. I remember the surrealness of it,” Harmon said. “I remember how scary that night was. Everybody thought the next attack was coming to that base that night. We were on full alert.”

Harmon joined 2,500 others at Red Rocks the morning of Sept. 11 to pay tribute to the nearly 3,000 people — including 343 New York City firefighters — who were killed in the World Trade Center attacks. Harmon, other firefighters from multiple departments and area residents climbed the equivalent of the 110 stories of the WTC. Before the climb ensued, recordings from New York news stations from when the attacks occurred were

“I still see those buildings being hit by a plane. Can you imagine (the firefighters) going up into those buildings, and what it took,” said Durant Carpenter, of Centennial.

It was the 11th year the climb at Red Rocks took place. The event benefits the FDNY Counseling Services Unit and the programs provided

New approach to care A recently opened medical office is taking a different approach to health care.

According to a news release, Pure Family Medicine, founded by Dr. Rebecca Bub, uses the Direct Primary Care health care model, a growing movement across the nation in which patients pay a monthly fee and receive much of their primary care for no additional cost.

“Direct Primary Care lets me get the time I have always wanted with my patients,” Bub said in the release.

“As a result, I’ve gotten to know them on a personal level and have helped them make real changes in their lives.”

Arrow, a business with a large global reach, designs software for other tech companies — it doesn’t manufacture, said John Hourigan, Arrow’s spokesperson.

It calls the companies it works with “customers,” and the first projectbased customers are scheduled to come in early October, said Mitchell, whose position oversees “internet of things (IoT) global solutions.” Internet of things means objects that are connected to the internet, enabling them to send and receive data.

So far in the south metro area, Colorado Smart Cities Alliance members are working on a project borne of an idea that preceded the alliance’s launch.

Centennial, Lone Tree and Greenwood Village are collaborating on the project on South Yosemite Street, which runs through all three cities. Under a flashy name — Project Mercury — sensors will gather data on Yosemite all the way from Lincoln to Belleview avenues.

The data will develop a picture of traffic volume at certain points during the day, along with time spent waiting at stoplights. After the initial data collection phase, traffic lights will be coordinated in an adaptive system to make their timing more responsive to traffic flows. Implementation is expected to be underway early 2020.

It remains to be seen what other projects the alliance puts forth in the south metro area, but for Justin

Teens looking to serve their community can apply to be part of the South Suburban Parks and Recreation Youth Commission, now in its sixth year.

The youth commission gives teens the chance to become involved in their communities and in South Suburban events and activities, according to a news release. Commission members help organize fundraisers, host service projects and participate in fun activities with their peers.

Teens also will practice their skills in critical thinking, communications and creativity while learning about local government and the parks and recreation industry. Past projects included successful fundraising tournaments at Colorado Journey Mini Golf, preparation of hundreds of sack lunches for the homeless and lowincome families, and volunteer opportunities with Children’s Kindness Network in local elementary schools.

Members of the commission also organized and participated in a trail clean-up project along the Mary Carter Greenway.

Eligible students in grades 7-11 who live in the South Suburban district and maintain a minimum 2.0 grade-

point average in school are welcome to apply. Teens must be willing to share ideas in group settings and be accepting of others and their ideas.

The goals of the commission are to discuss and suggest possible solutions about issues that young people face; to provide input about programs that are offered to teens in the community; to promote positive programs with peers; to promote healthy living, including overall physical, emotional and mental wellbeing, and to provide opportunities to develop youth as future leaders.

The youth commission serves in an advisory role to the recreation department, and members are selected through an application and interview process facilitated through the youth commission and staff liaisons. Candidates will be appointed by the South Suburban Board of Directors.

The commission meets from 6-7:30 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month from February through October.

VOICES Farewell to laundromats is a wash come true

I

just washed a load of colors and had a particularly gruesome flashback to a time when I didn’t own a washing QUIET machine.

I didn’t own a wash- DESPERATION ing machine until I was 33. I depended upon the ones in my apartment buildings or public laundromats.

Whenever laundromats are shown in films (“Shopgirl,” “The Blind Side,” Craig Marshall “Sling Blade”) they are almost always Smith sad-looking places with sad-looking people in them.

I went to Yelp to see if things have

changed, at least in Denver, and the Top Ten look nothing like the ones I went to in West Los Angeles, that had a lost-and-found of 40 or 50 unmatched socks, a few peach-colored brassieres, and kitchen towels with pictures of spices on them.

In college, I did my laundry once every two weeks, and I always went at odd hours, to avoid people. However, it meant that others who did their laundry at odd hours to avoid people would be there too. We never spoke. Maybe we nodded to each other, and that was it.

I do not underestimate my washing machine. It is more dependable than I am. It has a lot of different settings on it, but I think it’s just an illusion, and every setting actually performs identically.

How does a box of water know if

something is permanent press or not?

The answer is: It doesn’t, but it sounds reassuring.

When I went to laundromats, I had to sit there and wait. It was two hours of sitting there, and I usually took a book. The time wasn’t misused, but I would rather have been reading the book in my own home.

I was always on the lookout for nefarious types. Los Angeles has a few. However, my relentless self-preservation disallowed the possibility that I might meet someone who would become famous someday.

Here is an imagined conversation.

“Hey,” he said.

“Hello,” I said.

“I’m writing a song. I need a word that rhymes with ‘mire.’”

“Pyre?”

“Perfect. ‘And our love become a funeral pyre.’ Thanks, man.”

“Shouldn’t it be ‘becomes a funeral pyre’?”

“Uh, no, man.”

The lighting in the laundromats I went to was always very unflattering.

Maybe that has changed too. It made everything and everyone look worse.

As if David Lynch was behind it.

My first apartment building, on Sawtelle in West Los Angeles, had two washing machines and two dryers. It was always a matter of luck whether they were in use or not.

Sometimes loads would be left in them long after clothes were washed or dried, and that led to: 1. apologies, or 2. disputes. Generally, disputes.

But like the current president, it seems Gardner either can’t keep a promise or simply does not care about telling the truth. There are more than 100 military contracts from which this corrupt administration is attempting to rob funding from, to support his re-election campaign — oops, I mean the border wall. Same thing. Eight million dollars comes from a space project at Peterson Air Force Base here in Colorado.

Gardner could have been one of the dozen or so Republicans that resisted Trump’s efforts to override Congress but I guess he has shown his true colors as a supporter of corruption and authoritarianism.

We need both good conservatives and liberals to rebuild American values but first we have to get rid of this president and his enablers like Gardner.

hen we are intentional about making our choices and deliberate when it comes to choosing our own path, we typically increase our chances of success. It’s when we allow others to make our choices for us, or when we allow circumstances or even prior habits to dictate our path, that we find ourselves livWINNING ing a life that is WORDS vastly different than the one we dreamed of or had envisioned for ourselves.

In last week’s column we talked about intentionally choosing the right words to think about and Michael Norton to share with others, good, powerful, hope-filled, and encouraging words. We also covered how we can choose what we allow to captivate our mind and eye, images and imagery that elevate our positive attitude and bring us joy.

The key here is that we choose what we allow in and what we ultimately decide to keep out.

Our choice to create a winning

life and a better experience is no different. We are the ones who get to ultimately choose what we act upon, what we respond to, and the direction we choose to pursue. It’s a choice, and if you are reading this column right now, you still have time to make new choices, choose to follow the rewarding path you may be currently on and enjoying, or choose a new and different way forward.

One of my favorite personal development books of all time came out earlier this year. It is titled “Choose to Win” by Tom Ziglar, the proud son of Zig Ziglar and the CEO of the Zig Ziglar Corporation. The subtitle contains the magic and power of the book, “Transform Your Life One Simple Step at a Time.” And within the book I found the strategies and tactics that allowed me to plan and prepare for the next steps and new journey I was about to embark upon.

When asked for the secret to success, Tom offers this response, “The fastest way to success is to replace bad habits with good habits.” Sounds kind of easy right? If it is, why aren’t we all already doing it? It’s because we haven’t yet made the choice to intentionally choose to win. We may

Tariffs increasing market volatility

hank goodness we live in the United States. Among the blessings we share is an economy that has been more self-reliant than most. The United States contains vast amounts of natural resources, the world’s largest economy, a steady central banking system and a relatively resilient consumer. This positively compares our economic and political structure to China, Germany FINANCIAL and Japan.

We as a nation STRATEGIES face a new challenge … the fact that the world’s second largest economy, China, seems to be attempting to take advantage of the rest of the world. Governments around the world imposing tariffs on Patricia Kummer imports is commonplace. The United States’ tariff rate on industrial products — prior to the changes of the last few months — is among the lowest in the world, according to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. The tariff issue has been brewing for the better part of two years. However, the real issue the world has with China may have little to do with actual tariff rates, but rather industrial espionage and China’s global expansionary plans over the long term.

have made bad decisions in the past, we may have chosen poorly, but we can start turning that all around with the choices we make today and in all the tomorrows yet to come.

Starting with your “why” is step one.

Why am I doing this? Why are we doing this? It’s no different with our decision to choose to win. And as you will read in Tom’s book, he points out that discovering our “why” is also a choice. We need to be proactive and understand what we want to be, do, and have in this life. When we do, and when our “why” becomes clear, it will be much easier to make the right choices in each area that supports our goals and dreams.

Replace bad habits with good habits, elegantly simple and yet powerfully productive when we choose to do it, when we choose to win.

years have been: • To gain access to China’s economy, importers may need to take on a Chinese partner … someone who may be tied directly to the Chinese government. This allows China control over import levels, prices and business practices of companies.

• Industrial espionage has been a common practice of various Chinesebased companies backed by the Chinese government. Additionally, foreign companies may be required by the Chinese government to provide access to patent-protected manufacturing processes and proprietary industrial secrets. If companies refuse to comply with these requirements, they may not be allowed to sell their products to them.

These requirements have provided the opportunity for China’s companies to mimic high-tech manufacturing efficiencies gained through hard work and investments by companies and people from around the world.

Therefore, we are in a Catch-22.

While someone needs to rein in China, there are definitely concerns around the problems increased tariffs may bring upon our economy.

There could be another round of issues with China coming. There remains about $300 billion of annual Chinese imports into the United States that haven’t been affected by the tariff war … yet. Will the Trump administration apply the new 25% tariff rate to these imports? As of this writing, we don’t know, but, by most accounts, the tinue to positively impact millions of people. His body of work when it comes to developing excellence in ourselves and in others has contributed to the success of many CEO’s, business owners, parents, students, athletes, salespeople, managers, and people from all walks of life. This new book by his son Tom Ziglar, “Choose to Win,” will change your life and contribute to your success. It really will, but only if you first choose that you want to win and desire a change in your own path or journey.

TRAIL TROLL Open space officials, volunteers discuss outdoor etiquette amid increasing use

hen a bicyclist encounters a horseback rider on the trail, do they know what to do? When hikers walk their dogs through local open spaces, do they know the dos and don’ts of taking pets along for the adventure?

Denver metro area open space officials and volunteers who spoke to Colorado Community Media said the majority of people are considerate and follow trails rules. But they’ve also seen an influx of people hitting the trails as the Front Range’s population booms. That heightens the need for trail etiquette education, they said.

“You’ve got experienced people who don’t think twice about (etiquette) and your inexperienced people who just aren’t used to it yet,” said Open Space Specialist Hans Reichgelt with the City of Westminster.

In general, trail etiquette stipulates that cyclists yield to hikers and horseback riders, while hikers yield to horses. Yielding means moving off the trail until a user with the right-of-way has passed.

People should also stay to the right and keep pets on the right as well. Pass others on the left. People should announce themselves before passing. Clean up after pets.

Douglas County recently produced informational materials concerning trail etiquette in light of the county’s population growth and increase in trail use, said Assistant Director of Open Space Scott McEldowney.

“We anticipate roughly 600,000 users on open space this year,” McEldowney said. “I believe this year we will be about 5% over last year. The previous few years, we have seen a 15% to 20% increase.”

That’s a lot of people to fit in a relatively confined area, McEldowney said.

Total, the county manages 90 miles of open space trails and another 63 miles in Douglas County parks.

That’s not counting municipalities, state parks or federal forest land in the area.

In the north metro, Westminster offers 150 miles of trail surface, most of which is multimodal, Reichgelt said. People can walk, run, bike or ride horses.

In 2017, Westminster saw just shy of 550,000 trail users and nearly 554,000 in 2018.

Reichgelt said the city expects to surpass last year’s count “very soon for 2019.” He cautioned the city does not have counters on all trails, so the true numbers could be higher.

Open space officials aren’t the only ones advocating for responsible trail use and etiquette.

Throughout Jefferson County, the nonprofit Golden Giddyup Trail Team partners with Jefferson County Open Space to maintain trails. The organization began in 2013 after floods devastated the local

This summer, members surpassed 10,000 hours of volunteer work. Those hours have included pop-up events where they encourage people to follow open space rules and regulations.

“Working with open space and staff, we’ve specifically targeted mountain bikers at some of the most heavily used parks,” said Executive Director Jeff Watrobka.

The group is mostly comprised of mountain bikers. Watrobka himself averages 40 to 50 miles a week. He believes an important part of trail

etiquette is understanding a trail’s difficulty level before setting out.

Then, he said, check the weather. It’s important for trail users to pay attention to recent weather events. Different trails are comprised of different soil types, he said.

Some lend themselves well to biking or horseback riding when wet, but others do not. Those with heavy clay content can be damaged if used too soon after rain or snow, he said.

If he could grade Douglas County trail users, McEldowney said he’d give them a B-plus. There’s a low frequency of accidents, which can partially be attributed to how the system was planned, he said, but also to educated users.

When it comes to areas of improvement, Reichgelt, McEldowney and Watrobka all urged trails user to remain aware of their surroundings.

Ditch the headphones. Be on the lookout for wildlife, and other trail users. Lastly, leash the family dog, and keep it close.

When people make complaints, it’s frequently about unleashed dogs, McEldowney said. Similarly, Reichgelt said allowing dogs to extend their leash across the trail is a common mistake people make.

“That’s just a clothesline for anyone coming through on a bike,” he said.

Mostly, the men encouraged people to follow the golden rule and take care of the trail as though it were their home.

“Just be nice,” Reichgelt said. “Everyone is trying to do the same thing — just get out there and enjoy the outdoors.”

Authors of Colorado books are named to hall of fame

aturalist, historian, Colorado native and author Mary Taylor Young of Castle Rock is among 21 honored authors who have published books in or about Colorado. They were inducted into the newly formed Colorado Authors Hall of Fame on Sept. 14.

This is the first Authors Hall of Fame in the nation. Young says her next book will be about the history of Cheley Colorado Camps in Estes Park SONYA’S in November: “I SAMPLER Found You in the Mountains: 100 Years of Cheley Colorado Camps.”

To be followed by “a climate-themed sort of memoir about changes I have seen on the property we own in southern Colorado. Thinking Sonya Ellingboe I will call it `Bluebird Seasons.’” She will use her 20-year nature journal as a guide.

‘Cabaret’ is rousing but not all fun and games Iconic musical gets powerful turn on local stage with aid of live band

In his director’s notes for the “Cabaret” program — the musical opened Sept. 6 at Littleton’s Town Hall Arts Center — Nick Sugar, aka Master of Ceremonies, says this is his seventh production of “Cabaret.” And, he glides gracefully through the scenes — popping up here and there, with a snarky grin and choice words, tying the production together and sending an audience home feeling far edgier than when they arrived. It’s really a don’t-miss performance — running through Oct. 13.

One is reminded of director/actor Sugar’s dance background in his own graceful performance as well as the way other characters move onstage while storm clouds gather in early 1930s Berlin — and blow across Europe. Kate Bashore’s lighting seems to add to the tense atmosphere.

Clever stage design by Brandon Philip Case includes some audience members in the club décor, with red and gold ornate lamps and small tables up tight against the rim of the stage — and along part of the first row.

The musical, which opened on Broadway in 1966 with several Tony Awards, was followed by a film version in 1972 and is a skillful blend of sun and shadow, sarcasm and wit — set mostly in Berlin’s Kit Kat Klub, where sexy dancers perform and one imagines a haze of smoke …

Young American writer Clifford Bradshaw (Archie Archuleta) meets friendly German Ernst Ludwig (Matt LaFontaine) as their train travels toward Berlin. Bradshaw plans to write his first novel, while supporting himself by teaching English, somewhat oblivious — as many Americans were — of the Nazi rise to power. Ludwig helps him find a place to live in the boardinghouse operated by Fraulein Schneider (a strong Annie Dwyer) — and the story proceeds. The seemingly cheerful, friendly Ludwig shows another facet as the story develops and we’re not quite sure about some other characters.

Another of Schneider’s boarders is brassy blonde Fraulein Kost (Mary McGroary), who attracts a parade of sailors and others as guests.

A parallel and contrasting romance between Schneider and older Jewish merchant Herr Schultz (Tom Mullin) runs through the play, reminding the audience of the rising Nazi power as an ongoing story layer, as well as the possibility of romance for older people.

Kander and Ebb’s music and lyrics for “Cabaret” are still running through my head. In this production a fine score is enhanced with actors’ strong vocal performances — and by keyboard

whiz and music director Dona Kolpan Debreceni — with a live band that just makes such a difference. One can’t help but go out into the night humming.

One isn’t skipping while humming however, because the underlying rumble of disaster also surfaces periodically, with a remark or a rendering of “Tomorrow Belongs to Me,” the Nazi anthem.

Sugar concludes in his notes that he “wanted to make sure, this story is not only heard, but remembered and honored.”

“I hope that you take a wonderful journey with all of us tonight. And after that journey, we leave here with a deep understanding of the cruelty in our world and the ability to transform that understanding into kindness, compassion and love for one another.”

Centennial author Jane Lowry has completed the first book in her Ask-ALot Kids series.

“The WHY-entist and the Wild Weather” introduces budding scientists, engineers and other STEM/ STEAM enthusiasts ages 6-9 to real world vocabulary around clean energy and the science behind global warming. “The WHY-entist” is scheduled to be released Oct. 10 on Amazon.

Lowry is a mom and former teacher who now works among engineers and scientists who research renewable energy tech: solar, wind, tidal, geothermal, biomass etc. She loves participating in the United Way’s “Read With Me” program.

2020 National Merit semifinalists named Winners of more than $31 million in scholarships to be selected in spring STAFF REPORT

Semifinals in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program have been announced.

The program honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The program does not measure the quality or effectiveness of education in a specific school.

Nationwide, about 16,000 students qualified as semifinalists. They will continue in the competition for 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million in total. The winners will be named in the spring.

Three types of National Merit Scholarships are awarded. Every finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 Scholarships, awarded on a state-representational basis.

About 1,000 corporate Merit Scholarships will be provided by corporations and business organizations who meet their specified criteria. In addition, about 180 colleges and universities are expected to finance about 4,100 collegesponsored awards for finalists who attend the sponsor institution.

Group says more women may need breast cancer gene test Guidelines from task force suggest wider screening to fight disease

More women may benefit from gene testing for hereditary breast or ovarian cancer, especially if they’ve already survived cancer once, an influential health group recommended on Aug. 20.

At issue are genes called BRCA1 and BRCA2. When they’re mutated, the body can’t repair damaged DNA as well, greatly increasing the chances of breast, ovarian and certain other cancers. Gene testing allows affected women to consider steps to lower their risk, such as when actress Angelina Jolie underwent a preventive mastectomy several years ago.

Most cancer isn’t caused by BRCA mutations — they account for 5% to 10% of breast cancers and 15% of ovarian cancers — so the gene

for another tumor in their remaining breast tissue, explained task force member Dr. Carol Mangione of the University of California, Los Angeles.

And it could alert their daughters or other relatives to a potential shared risk.

“It’s important to test those people now,” Mangione said. “We need to get the word out to primary care doctors to do this assessment and to make the referrals.”

Private insurers follow task force recommendations on what preventive care to cover, some at no out-of-pocket cost under rules from former President Barack Obama’s health care law.

Cancer groups have similar recommendations for BRCA testing, and increasingly urge that the newly diagnosed be tested, too, because the inherited risk can impact choices about surgery and other treatment.

Identifying BRCA mutation carriers “can be lifesaving, and should be a part of routine medical care,” Drs. Susan Domchek of the University of Pennsylvania and Mark Robson of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, who weren’t involved with the

new guidelines, wrote in an editorial accompanying them.

But too few high-risk women ever learn if they harbor BRCA mutations, they wrote. For example, cancer groups have long recommended that all ovarian cancer patients be tested, but several studies have found testing is done in less than a third.

Don’t skip the genetic counseling, said the task force’s Mangione. BRCA testing can cause anxiety and sometimes gives confusing results, finding mutations that might not be dangerous — things the counselors are trained to interpret. There’s a shortage of genetic counselors, particularly in rural areas, and she said counseling by phone can work.

There’s a wide array of gene tests, some that search just for BRCA mutations and others that test dozens of additional genes at the same time.

There’s even a direct-to-consumer kit sold by 23andMe — but Domchek and Robson warned it only detects the three mutations found most in women of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, not dozens of other mutations.

tests aren’t for everyone. But mutations cluster in families, and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has long recommended that doctors screen women who have relatives with BRCArelated cancers and refer those who might benefit from gene testing to a genetic counselor to help them decide.

On Aug. 20, the task force expanded that advice, telling primary care doctors they should also assess women’s risk if: they previously were treated for breast or other BRCA-related cancers including ovarian, fallopian tube or peritoneal cancers, and now are considered cancer-free, or their ancestry is prone to BRCA mutations, such as Ashkenazi Jewish women.

Why screen breast cancer survivors?

After all, they already know there’s a risk of recurrence.

Take, for example, someone who had a tumor removed in one breast in their 40s a decade ago, when genetic testing wasn’t as common. Even this many years later, a BRCA test still could reveal if they’re at risk for ovarian cancer — or at higher than usual risk

Urban farm, restaurant and market coming to Englewood Grow + Gather will occupy the old Bill’s Auto Service building

George Gastis sold his tech business four years ago — a year after he packed his bags and moved to Englewood from Platt Park. Contemplating what his next move would be, he knew he always had a green thumb and a love for food.

At first, he had planned to find a property to purchase or rent where he would grow food that would be sold to grocery stores and restaurants. In the process of planning his next steps, Gastis purchased the old Bill’s Auto Service building, located at 900 E. Hampden Ave. “The idea quickly became more than just a place to grow food. There seemed to be a great opportunity to create a place where not only can we grow food, but reconnect the neighborhood and surrounding communities,” said Gastis, referring to places like Littleton, south Denver, Greenwood Village and other areas near Englewood. “Our geographic location is sort of strangely unique in the sense that we sit on the edge of some of those communities.”

After planning and talking to people from his past, Gastis realized there was an opportunity to create a hub around food at the old Bill’s Auto Service building. Gastis seized the opportunity, and depending on construction, Grow + Gather will open its doors in October. The development will be a casual restaurant and a market that’ll sell coffee and freshly harvested produce and foods - all grown at Grow + Gather.

“When we moved to this neighborhood, I saw the potential in this area.

The restaurant will be operated by chefs like Caleb Phillips, a Tennessee native who plans to bring a Southern twist to some of Grow + Gather’s dishes. Phillips says the menu will be simple, but it’ll center around ingredients that will come from

Grow + Gather’s farm. Some of its dishes will include biscuits, salads, pies, egg dishes and grits. Beer will also be available at the restaurant, brewed from the second level of the building.

“It’s just the neatest idea. I get to walk 20 yards to get fresh vegetables,” said Phillips. “The community has already been super kind and receptive.

I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

‘Great fall bloom period’ ahead at Hudson Gardens Meet the Rose Gardener event provides visitors with tips from the masters

Just off one of the busiest highways in the south Denver metro area sits a quiet refuge of nature, where master gardeners pass on tips to the public.

“This year was late starting in terms of when plants started growing,” said Dave Ingram, a volunteer gardener at Hudson Gardens in Littleton. Japanese beetles — which feed on many types of plants — are fading early, Ingram said, “so we look forward to a great fall bloom period.”

The event center at 6115 S. Santa Fe Drive, a place that sees weddings and reunions, also offers a Meet the Rose Gardener event, where people can come talk to “master rosarians” like Ingram.

He and several other volunteers worked on the rose bed the morning of Sept. 11, a ritual they repeat on Wednesdays from late April to early November, Ingram said.

“The rose garden was restored and replanted around 2010,” said Ingram, adding that the caretakers are volunteers who want to make

“Some people have joined volunteering to contribute,” Ingram said, “and some have joined to learn.”

“It’s a labor of love,” Ingram said.

When customers walk through Grow + Gather’s community room, an area designated for guests to have coffee and for classes on gardening and cooking, they’ll be able to see their food being grown behind a glass window. Behind that glass window will reside a hydroponic system where plants will grow on indoor towers. Hydroponics is a method of growing plants year-round in sand, gravel or liquid with added nutrients without using soil.

Farms that use the hydroponic method use up to 10 times less water than traditional farms, according to the National Park Service.

Gastis says the rooftop of the building will serve as rooftop greenhouse, where he’ll grow crops like tomatoes.

“It is exciting to see a new business concept like Grow + Gather here in Englewood as well as the repurposing of the property once occupied by Bill’s Auto Service. It is sure to bring new life to that area,” said David Carroll, executive director of the Greater Englewood Chamber of Commerce.

ast year, Anna Swanson listened to AP U.S. history videos while doing planks.

“It doesn’t get you pumped up, but it gets the information in your head,” said Swanson, who uses homework as an opportunity to squeeze in workouts to bolster her running routine.

The Grandview High School senior is in her fourth year in cross country and runs the mile and twomile races in track, a sport she participated in throughout middle school, too. She started with the Bolder Boulder in fifth grade and never looked back, coming from a family that’s “real big on running,” she said.

Swanson played volleyball

in middle school, but she finds herself more focused on improvement in an individual sport.

“You have a lot more goals,” Swanson said.

“Cross country is kind of a team sport, but it’s really you against yourself in the end.”

She plans to become a teacher for people with hearing loss, going through Metropolitan State University for a teaching license and then to the University of Northern Colorado. She plans to run at Metro State next year.

“I started American Sign Language because my sister did it. I’ve wanted to do special education since fifth grade,” Swanson said. “I’ve always wanted to make a difference.”

COACH’S TAKE: “The biggest thing that stands out about Anna is her love of running and her tremendous work ethic. She’s always asking to do more, and I really appreciate that about her. And I think that’s what makes her one of the top runners in the state.”

Q&A with Swanson Who’s your favorite athlete?

Molly Huddle, a U.S. runner. She’s really into doughnuts and is a nail enthusiast. She speaks to being a teenage girl in a way (laughs). She gives it her all — she’s so inspiring.

What would be a perfect performance in cross country?

Just keeping it consistent in races. That’s a big thing for my racing style.

What’s your favorite class?

I’m really into AP environmental science, especially with climate change going on. I hope it educates me on that.

What do you like to do away from sports and school?

I’m really big with animals. Our little rescue dog is so smart, so I like to work with him — I’m trying to see how many tricks he can learn. I like seeing my family — I have the cutest nephews in the world.

Is there something about cross country people seem not to know about?

Probably why we all do it. A lot of people don’t like running. It really helps you in the long run mentally because you have to overcome tough workouts. I don’t think people see that, really. Sometimes I think, “If I can get through this workout, I can get through anything.”

High school soccer in Colorado has been forced to adopt a new look over the past few seasons.

Many of the best players are skipping high school soccer because of the commitment to play with Developmental Academy teams.

“We’ve got three or four or five players roaming OVERTIME the halls that are not playing for us,’” said Mark Hampshire, who is the coach of Arapahoe’s defending state champions and No. 1 ranked 5A team in the state this year.

“We have some guys that could have played DA but they realize the importance of high school, that it is going to get then farther that developmental. “ Developmental Academies are designed for elite players looking to play collegiate soccer and maybe beyond, so practices and games are against top-flight competition, which challenges player to improve their skills. According to U.S. Soccer, the academy’s philosophy is based on increased training, fewer total games and more meaningful matches. Players are showcased for college recruiters.

The major controversy surrounding the 10-month DA season is that players and teams cannot play in any outside competition, which includes high school soccer. Boys DA programs started in 2007 with six age groups starting at U12. Girls DA programs began in 2017 with four age groups.

“We lost anywhere between four to six players, which is unfortunate because soccer keeps pushing that on families and kids,” said Heritage coach Adam Buseck after the Eagles lost 1-0 to Arapahoe in a rivalry game.

“They can’t hardly get out of their own way.

There are two DA programs per gender in Colorado. Colorado Real has both boys and girls DA programs.

The Rapids has a boys DA program and Colorado Rush has a girls program.

“There is a place for high school just as I think there is a place for the developmental academy,” said Colorado Real chief operating officer Jared Spires. “For a club like Real, we’re not saying the developmental academy is the right thing any more than we are saying high school is the right thing, “We want to be at the forefront of club soccer and currently that is the developmental academy. To participate in that we have to abide by U.S.

Soccer’s mandates, which says kids don’t play high school sports if they are in your developmental academy.

“We’re not saying the academy is better. We tell our academy players there is nothing that stops them from being involved in their high schools in different ways. We are just saying when it comes to soccer, because of the Developmental Academy rules, you can’t play.”

Requests for comments from U.S. Soccer were not returned.

Jim Engels coached club soccer for 30 years and is the boys and girls coach at Ponderosa.

“DA has hurt high school soccer a lot just from the standpoint of talent level,” he said. “We still have good soccer in high school but we lost a lot of talented players, both boys and girls. It hurts the kids, too, because very kid I’ve talked to either would rather play high school or comes back and plays high school.

“To me the academies are all about money. It’s expensive, plus it burns kids out. If you don’t play academy

and just play on a regular club team, you can play both high school and club. I know all the high school coaches are frustrated.”

This week’s performances were selected from games, matches and meets from Sept. 5-12 Tarek Salem of Highlands Ranch recorded four birdies and a bogey during his round of 3-under-par 69 on Sept. 9 at Blackstone Golf Club as he captured medalist honors in the Continental League golf tournament.
