I have been working with Todd Smith — “Tomato Todd” — from the South University Farmers Market for the last two years in Centennial and Greenwood Village. When I found out that we were invited to go back to Centennial for a market this year I was so excited! I sell botanical-based skin care and wellness products from a company called Neora.

My favorite part of a farmers market is that the vendors become a little family. Another favorite is getting to know the community. I love chatting with people and finding out their stories and where they are from.

Wearing many hats It seems like a lifetime ago, but before I was a mom and involved with Neora, I was an actor, singer and dancer in New York and Los Angeles. I’ve been very lucky to have worked around the world. Some of my favorite “gigs” were when I performed on Broadway, danced for Madonna and acted in a

Passionate for self-care, well-being When someone would ask me, when I was young, what I wanted to be when I grow up, I’d say “Happy!” They’d argue with me that happy wasn’t something to “be,” and I’d just say “It is something to be! I just want to be happy!” I’d look on the bright side on pretty much everything, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t have daily challenges. I’m one of six kids, so there was always something going on!

On self-care, I found that it became more important to me after my 20s when I injured my knee dancing. I think I took my health for granted when I was young and striving to be successful.

I really enjoy being of service and helping people look, feel and live better. I believe if you practice self-care, you will lead a happier life because you will be more mindful of how you feel and what makes you happy.

Centennial Centennial’s ‘intelligent’ adaptive launches senior traffic system nears launch First crack at adjusting lights with new sensors will be on Yosemite Street

Drivers in the Centennial area could soon find themselves moving through the traffic of the future.

“We realized a long time ago, we can’t build our way out of traffic,” said Stephanie Piko, Centennial mayor, at the Sept. 3 city council meeting.

By early 2020, Centennial’s Intelligent Transportation System may be on the way to making some traffic signals adapt to better fit traffic flows. The ITS — which will ultimately be a combination of traffic vehicle sensors, signal controllers and a central management system — will track traffic levels and adjust traffic signal timing accordingly.

The city’s “ITS master plan” bears a roughly $6 million cost, said Craig Faessler, a traffic engineering official with the city.

“The price tag, it sounds high, but compared to construction of a road or lane or infrastructure,” it’s a better fiscal option, Piko said.

A major tipping point in the traffic system’s development is the implementation of a pilot — or starter — project on South Yosemite Street, which has become a common alternative for drivers to skirt the highway traffic on Interstate 25 south of Denver.

Project Mercury Borne of an idea from early 2017, Centennial, Lone Tree and Greenwood Village are collaborating on the project on that road, which runs through all three cities. Under a flashy name —

Project Mercury — sensors will gather data on Yosemite Street all the way from Lincoln to Belleview avenues.

The data will develop a picture of traffic volume at certain points during the day, along with time spent waiting at stoplights. After the initial data collection phase, traffic lights will be coordinated in an adaptive system to make their timing more responsive to traffic flows.

So far, sensors have been installed, and are collecting data, in Lone Tree and Centennial.

The cities expect to implement the system after the holidays, according Seth Hoffman, Lone Tree’s city manager.

“If we see the success with Project Mercury, it could be certainly deployed to other corridors,” Faessler said.

The ITS involves Centennial’s underground network of fiber-optic cable, which was completed in late 2018 after construction that began in 2016. The fiber backbone, as it’s often called, allows access to faster internet speeds.

The rest of the Centennial will be able to use the new traffic technology later in 2020 and 2021 as the planned upgraded traffic engineering fiber network gets deployed in phases.

“Until then, we have operated signal timing based on manual inputs to our central system and signal controllers,” said Allison Wittern, Centennial spokesperson.

Eventually, the ITS will be a harmony of many technologies: The city has 62 intersections at which closed-circuit TV cameras are already operational and they verify traffic incidents, allowing operators to manually adjust signals in response.

Twenty sensors by software company Blyncsy along the Yosemite corridor in Centennial will support

making signals adaptive. Lone Tree also has 20 Blyncsy sensors, according to Wittern.

On top of that, 38 BlueTOAD sensors — already deployed along that corridor and other areas throughout the city — will support ITS technology.

The BlueTOAD sensors measure the time it takes for cars to travel from one sensor to another using Bluetooth signals. They assign temporary anonymous IDs — individuals aren’t identified, officials noted at the council meeting. That measurement gauges traffic along major roads, and that information can be used to adjust signals, Wittern said.

In 2018, 83 signal controllers — essentially computers that sit in boxes at intersections — were all upgraded and will be used with the adaptive signal control technology beginning in 2020.

Even the city’s 32 school zone flashing beacons — all installed by 2018 — are controlled by the city’s Traffic Management Center remotely, deciding when they are turned on or off. The center is located in the city’s public works building.

Centennial’s cameras, Yosemite Street sensors, school zone blinkers and signal controllers will connect to the city’s fiber network, which also connects with the central systems located at the traffic management center.

Implementation of the ITS master plan began in 2017. In 2019, “Package 1” of the traffic fiber network began, with work on connecting the signals on Yosemite and Chester streets to the fiber backbone. That work will end this year or in early 2020.

Next year, under “Package 2,” the rest of the city’s traffic signals will connect to the fiber backbone, starting west of I-25 in the East Dry Creek Road corridor. In 2021, the whole ITS is expected to be complete.

Being comfortable with technology can help maintain and enhance the quality of life for older adults.

Therefore, to better meet the needs of Centennial’s senior residents, the city is adding technology literacy workshops to the Centennial Active Senior programming.

Adults ages 60 and older are invited to attend a technology training course hosted by Centennial Active Seniors and GroovyTek. This technology training is GroovyTek’s “TekFun” program, which covers numerous topics such as online security basics, pros and cons of communication platforms, ways technology can help in daily lives and a variety of other topics.

Participants will engage in two consecutive group workshops at Southglenn Library, one individual support session with a technology specialist and one coaching call, and will have access to online resources provided by GroovyTek throughout the program’s duration.

The cost is $25 to participate. The Southglenn Library is at 6972 S. It may as well have been the Angela Garland show at Eaglecrest High School during the first Cherry Creek school board candidate forum of the campaign season.

“All areas of the district should be viewed through the lens of equity,” said Garland, a candidate for the District C seat. “That includes limiting the (achievement) gaps for students.”

At the forum Sept. 4 — the first of six that will run through early October — Garland was the only candidate to speak at length, as her one opponent, Alioune “Ali” Sogue, was absent.

District C in the south Aurora-east Centennial area, mostly north of East Smoky Hill Road, is the only contested Cherry Creek School District race for the November election.

Garland spoke about diversity, achievement gaps along demographic lines, her views on standardized tests and school vouchers, which allow parents to use public funds to pay for children to attend private school.

nial — also spoke at the forum, along with current school board member and secretary Janice McDonald. She’s a candidate for District B, the southwest Aurora area. Egan and McDonald are running unopposed and only spoke at the start of the forum.

Here’s a look at what the candidates had to say.

Diversity a priority “Inclusive excellence” — an oftenused buzzword for diversity-related initiatives — is important to Garland as a parent of color, she said.

For Garland, priorities include recruiting and retaining staff of color, making sure staff have an understanding of other cultures, and implementing that awareness in classrooms and teaching.

munity liaison to promote cultural understandings across different backgrounds in the district. Garland has four children who have been Cherry Creek schools students.

A nonprofit manager, she also has volunteered as a board member of the Cherry Creek School District Foundation, which gives grants and other support to district students and educators.

In a “lightning round” of sorts during the forum, Garland said teacher evaluation ratings should not be tied to test scores, local taxes should be increased to fund the district and that she takes issue with CMAS — Colorado Measures of Academic Success, the state’s standardized test system.

“On the surface, I do believe in testing to gauge where students are.

I don’t believe that a test exclusively ought to determine the placement of a student or the trajectory of their career,” Garland said.

Tests are “snapshots in time” and other factors should determine the classes or opportunities available to students, she added.

And because some students need more assistance than others, teacher evaluations should take an area’s characteristics — ZIP codes and income — into account, Garland continued.

She also took aim at school vouchers, saying she understands frustration about schools possibly failing to perform well but that it’s a challenge the school district should take on.

“In general, I am not for vouchers,” Garland said. “I find it very interesting that public school is the only place where we have this discussion of,

‘Give me the money — I’ll do it myself.’ We don’t do that with police, fire or parks. We don’t say, ‘Give me the money, and I’ll build my own park.’”

Sogue, Garland’s opponent, works as an environmental engineer and project manager in the Henderson area near Brighton. Two of his children graduated from Smoky Hill High School and the third from Eaglecrest High School.

He’s the co-founder and president of the board of directors of the Colorado African Organization, a nonprofit that provides services to Colorado’s refugee, immigrant and asylum-seeking populations, according to his information page on the district website.

Uncontested candidates Egan, who was honored as one of the district’s 2019 Exceptional Volunteers, has served on multiple schools’ parent-teacher community organizations, including as the president of Cherry Creek High School’s PTCO. “There is so much diversity in this district of 55,000 students and among individual students and their families,” Egan said in her opening statement. “I want to keep advocating for, and furthering, the critical mental health policies being implemented in the district, as well as the social media discussions that go hand-in-hand with these conversations.”

Three of Egan’s children are graduates of the district, and one currently attends a district school, the release said.

McDonald is a member and secretary on the school board who was elected in 2015. She was a licensed substitute teacher for many years, volunteered “countless hours” in the district, has five children who attended Cherry Creek schools and has grandchildren in the district.

“As I was beginning to speak of my desire to run for a second term, someone said to me, `Oh, you like the pain that much?’ Well, it’s not pain but, rather, a pleasure,” McDonald said in her opening statement. “It’s not the power and recognition, and definitely not for the big bucks! … Every decision ultimately comes down to what is best for kids and how their lives will be improved.”

The City of Centennial is accepting applications to fill openings on the open space advisory board, which assists the city in setting priorities for use of open space funds and reviews and comments on individual open space projects for

park, trail and recreation use.

Terms are for three years, and a stipend of $25 per meeting is paid to each attending board member. Meetings take place on the fourth Tuesday evening of each month at the Centennial Civic Center, 13133 E. Arapahoe Road, Centennial.

Centennial Car Show catches eyes for fourth year

A

few minutes east of the sea of modern cars at dealerships on East Arapahoe Road, flashy rides from decades past assembled just behind Centennial’s city hall.

“This is actually pretty nice,” said Steven Shermer, 41, at the city’s fourth annual Car Show Sept. 7. “I’ve been to a lot of car shows that weren’t put together very well.”

He stood next to a light blue 1972 Ford F-100, one that was donated to Smoky Hill High School’s auto shop, which later sold it to him. He enjoyed answering questions about the truck.

“It seems a lot of people are downto-earth about talking about the cars,” said Shermer, a Centennial resident.

Nearby, Dwayne Williams sat next to his 1969 Oldsmobile 442 W30, a car he’s taken to many shows since acquiring it about two years ago. The 60-year-old southeast Aurora resident likes that car shows expose him to people and their cultures that he wouldn’t otherwise get to talk about.

“You hear their stories — `I had it when I was in high school,’ things like that,” Williams said. “It makes people reminisce on the spot.”

The car show took place at Centennial Center Park, at 13050 E. Peakview Ave., near Arapahoe Road and South Potomac Street.

City council candidate profile: Richard Holt District 3 hopeful touts longtime tech background

Richard Holt has done pretty much everything in the tech industry except coding.

“I’ve been in tech in one way, shape or form for about 25 years now,” said Holt, a candidate for Centennial City Council in District 3. “As a trainer, project manager, program manager — right now, I’m a business analyst.”

What sets him apart from other candidates is his technology knowhow and “at least having a toehold in what’s going on,” Holt said.

Holt The city’s underground infrastructure of fiber-optic cable — which allows access to faster internet speeds — is one example of what Holt’s background helps him grasp.

Holt serves on the city’s Open Space Advisory Board and is a graduate of Centennial 101, a seven-week program that explains how the city government functions. He is a former member of the Foxridge neighborhood’s improvement association.

Holt works as a digital media analyst for a company that edits, distributes and helps produce advertisements that

play in movie theaters nationwide.

District 3 is by far the city’s largest inland area, spanning from parts of southwest Centennial to the city’s southeast region, past South Parker Road.

Here is a look at Holt’s policy positions in his own words. Responses were lightly edited for clarity.

What’s the most important thing you want to accomplish in office?

To keep Centennial running as lean as possible. Lean is kind of an IT (information technology) term, but it’s also a philosophy to get as much value as possible out of taxpayer dollars.

Centennial does a phenomenal job on running lean, contracting a large amount of its services.

‘Smart growth’ is an often-used buzzword.

What does that look like to you?

One is leveraging the technology that we have currently and also, in the future, to incorporate it into this program: this big thing known as growth.

If we can’t leverage tech in growth, it’s not necessarily smart growth; it’s just growth. We have the three rings of fiber, 50 miles of delicious fiber, that the city was smart enough to build. What do we do with it?

Smart growth is also about the listening aspect. You have these proposals, large and small, from developers … saying we want to do this, and there doesn’t seem to be much opposition … so it gets fairly easily approved.

But with the larger ones, there’s opposition, and rightfully so. I think smart growth is getting these groups together, really listening, asking the correct questions, to try to come up with a win-win solution that’ll help both sides.

What is your approach to transportation and ‘smart city’ initiatives?

For now, the bedrock is those rings of fiber. We have (internet provider) Ting coming in to provide the “last mile,” to offer the gigabit speeds of internet.

But you’re still going to have untapped potential in these things. There’s an initiative right now between Greenwood Village, Lone Tree and Centennial (to make traffic lights adaptive to traffic flows). Let’s monitor it and see if it actually helps. Anything we can do to alleviate traffic using tech.

What is the best way to maintain retail sales tax base in Centennial?

It all goes down to attracting innovating businesses that people will actually want to go to. A big example is Topgolf: It’s something different, it’s experiential. Not necessarily retail goods you can get on Amazon — you’re selling the experience.

Mom-and-pop small businesses coming into town to offer experiences and smaller dine-ins — not the chains — we’ll do whatever we can to help you succeed … Fiscal responsibility is at my base. It’s not like, “Oh my gosh we’re going to pay for your lease or

give tax breaks,” but whatever we can do to incentivize.

What issue is city council not paying enough attention to?

There really isn’t anything that they’re not looking at … This is in no way a knock on city council, but an issue I think will be of greater importance in coming year is the issue of homelessness. You have a burgeoning homeless population from Denver and its natural migration to the suburbs.

I do know a few councilmembers are reaching out to different municipalities; it’s something that’s on the radar and is getting closer.

How can the city best take care of its increasingly aging population?

This is near and dear to my heart because my in-laws are here much of the year. Trying to have the seniors stay in Centennial and age in place ... There’s only so much city can do.

We can’t do everything, but there are zoning laws that may help. Also, it’s working between the city, county, the homeowners associations and also the special districts as well.

If you build accessory dwelling units, ADUs, on your property for seniors, what about electricity, water and sewer? How does the infrastructure handle that? That’s where we need to work with our special districts that handle utilities.

Legend, Grandview named finalists for Succeeds Prize Top prizes are $15,000, and winners will be named during Sept. 19 event STAFF REPORT

Legend High School and Grandview High School were recently named finalists for The Succeeds Prize, a competitive statewide awards program to honor schools, districts and teachers who are reimagining education to prepare students for the workforce of the future.

Winners will be announced during a free event Sept. 19 at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. Each winner will be awarded $15,000. Each of the finalists receives a $5,000 award.

Laband, president of Colorado Succeeds, said in a news release. “The Excellence in Education finalists stand out as true examples of what Colorado schools are doing to keep pace with the changing world around us.”

Experts predict that 85 percent of the jobs that will exist in 2030 have not been invented yet, and that many of today’s jobs are susceptible to automation, the release said. Through The Succeeds Prize, now in its third year, the Colorado business community seeks to recognize and reward educators reimagining education. This year’s finalists are engaging their community to deeply engage students with their learning.

“If we want to see schools innovate at scale, we have to elevate and invest in what is working. The Succeeds Prize not only rewards the efforts of educators who are making an impact in Colorado, but it also offers a platform supported by the business community to inspire education and policy leaders across the state,” Laband said in the release.

High marks but little change on state tests at LPS Littleton schools score well above average in science, math, English

Littleton Public Schools continued a trend of high scores on state assessment tests, though officials say there’s still a ways to go to meet state goals.

LPS students performed well above state averages at all levels of the Colorado Measures of Academic Success, or CMAS tests, in 2019, according to figures released in August by the Colorado Department of Education.

On the PSAT and SAT tests — which can be determining factors in college acceptance — LPS students scored several points higher than state averages.

By and large, however, the scores are nearly unchanged from last year, and still below where the district would like them to be.

“We’re not unhappy, but they’re flat,” said Patti Turner, the LPS director of learning services. “We’re still working hard to implement the test standards, and realistically they’re only a tiny sliver to demonstrate student performance across the school year.”

On the CMAS math tests, which

are administered in elementary and middle school, 52.5% of LPS students met or exceeded expectations, compared to 34.7% statewide.

On the English/language arts tests, also administered in elementary and middle school, 64.1% of LPS students met or exceeded expectations, compared to 45.8% statewide.

Most of the LPS math and English scores experienced only negligible percentage changes from last year, with the exception of eighth-grade math, where scores increased by 19.2 percentage points over last year.

That’s a fluke, Turner said, because in past years accelerated math students were allowed to take high school tests. This year, the state required advanced math students to take tests within their grade level.

In science, which is administered in fifth, eighth and 11th grades, LPS saw 53.3% of students meet or exceed expectations, compared to 30.7% statewide.

The 11th-grade science scores, however, are difficult to use as a metric of student success because of their unusually high opt-out rate, Turner said.

Only 27.9% of eligible 11th-graders at LPS took the science test, according to state data, far below the state participation rate of 61.0%.

Parents are allowed to opt their children out of any state test, Turner said, and few see the value in the high school science test, because it has no bearing on college applications.

The LPS scores on the SAT and PSAT were above state averages.

The LPS average on the SAT was 1092 points, higher than the state average of 1001. PSAT scores in ninth and 10th grades showed similar margins.

While the tests are an important metric to measure student success, Turner said they don’t come close to offering a comprehensive picture.

“This is one set of data on a set of students on a particular day,” Turner said. “They’re only a piece of the puzzle. We triangulate them with other data points to help us

understand how our kids are doing.”

While it’s nice to be above average, Turner said the district would like to see the scores climb even higher.

“Our goal is to have 100% of our kids ready for post-secondary options,” Turner said. “There’s no one answer to what would bring these scores up into the 90s. More institutional support, maybe, or a longer school year. We do the best we can for every student.”

It wasn’t uncommon to see whole districts scoring in the 90s back in the days of the Colorado Student Assessment Program, or CSAP tests, said Jeremy Meyer, the director of communications for the Colorado Department of Education.

Colorado quit administering the CSAP test in 2011, partly because the scores were so high, Meyer said.

“The legislature saw that kids were scoring really well on the CSAP, but then they’d get to college

and need to take remedial classes,” Meyer said. “The CMAS is better aligned to what kids should know in the 21st century.”

While CMAS tests are a narrow window into student performance, Meyer said they’re useful because they’re the only common measurement used to compare districts statewide.

“We can also parse the data a lot of ways,” Meyer said. “How kids from low-income families or kids of different races are doing, for instance.”

The tests are administered as part of a federal mandate, Meyer said, and schools with low scores may be eligible for additional funding.

The first CMAS tests were given in 2014, Meyer said, meaning only now are trends beginning to emerge.

“We want to see kids graduating with college and career-ready skills and knowledge,” Meyer said.

“Statewide trends are showing increases.”

How can the city best address high housing costs and the regional issue of homelessness?

It’s difficult for the city to go against market forces. I moved from southern California 30 years ago, partly because single-family homes weren’t affordable. Unfortunately, for some millennials today, a single-family home in Centennial may be out of reach. If the state’s liability laws were changed to motivate developers to focus on developing condos and townhomes instead of apartments, then actual ownership will be more in reach.

On homelessness, I think understanding the problem is huge and also working with other municipalities. You can’t paint the homeless with a broad brush. There are many reasons behind it … We need to work with Denver, too, because they’ve been working the issue longer than we have. It’s going to take a lot of discussion, a lot of listening, a lot of learning, putting together a plan of action and putting it in place … these are people too, and you can’t just brush them aside.

How many times could you hear “Place the item in the bag” before losing your mind?

This is an ode to the 21st-century American grocery store.

Before there were the grocery stores we are familiar with today, there were general stores and “mom and pop” stores.

General stores might sell bulk foods, like soda crackers, and feature only two or three flavors of ice cream that had to be hand-packed.

I shopped at a mom and pop grocery store at the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Sawtelle Boulevard in West Los Angeles when

I was in college.

The owners were always there, stocking shelves, sweeping, or workQUIET ing the register. I DESPERATION got to know them by name during my freshman year, but a year later, I moved and began my lifelong relationship with major chain stores.

The closest I have come lately to a mom and pop is in my Craig Marshall favorite Colorado Smith town, La Veta.

Charlie’s Market has been family owned and operated since 1937. You can get anything you

need, and there’s even an old-fashioned ice cream counter.

I should probably move to La Veta and get this over with.

This rat race. This Interstate 25.

This madding crowd.

The population of La Veta is around 800, and about half of them are artists.

I am close enough to walk to two major chain stores. There are a few convenience stores nearby too.

And they are always populated with a wide variety of characters that could fill a Fellini movie.

I see families. Four, five, six, seven, eight. I guess it’s an education. (It’s an education for those of us who have to shop around them.)

I see high school kids, usually clusters of girls or clusters of boys,

Words of encouragement, kindness draw attention

hanks again for all of the emails regarding my column and the “Winning Words” found here each week. I truly appreciate you all.

Interestingly enough, and based on the community’s feedback, it seems like the stories I have shared and columns I have writWINNING ten over the years that include “softer” WORDS topics such as kindness, encouragement, love, trust, hope and faith always generate more emails each week than when I speak about leadership, change, careers, conflict and professional growth.

Michael Norton If I write about having courage in the face of change, the emails typically tend to focus on how to find that courage more than deal with the change. When I address the importance of encouragement in a leadership role, the responses are weighted more heavily on the encouragement aspect and less on being a leader.

This tells me that even in our everchanging, fast-moving, often turbu-

lent and upside-down world, we need to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel and that there is more than just the rush and crush of life that is right in front of us sometimes.

For some who deal with the brutality of reality so often, when they have the chance to catch a glimpse of something positive, they not only reach for it, but they leap for it. At least that is what I see in the emails I receive.

The other side of the story that I hear about is just how many of you seek out the positive words, the winning attitudes, the loving relationships, the majesty of the mountains, and the serenity of the sunsets as a defense mechanism. Recognizing that if you didn’t look for the “good,” that the “bad” would overtake you and consume your thoughts and energy.

I really love what one of our readers, Susan, shared with me in a recent email, “When I allow myself to see positive words, whether on a billboard, a storefront, a hand-painted wooden sign, online, in a magazine, or in one of your columns, it is like I am living in the light of those winning words.”

She went on to share more about her choice of the word, “allow,” because she felt like sometimes, “the negative noise steals my freedom to choose goodness.” Have you ever felt that way? I think we all have, or even do, at some point.

This is why it is so important to find and strike the balance between the noise and what we allow in, and what we choose to defend against.

It is so vital to have people and places in our lives that bring us joy and happiness. We can build ourselves up and choose to lift others up through the words we use, write, text and email. Positive, encouraging, good, powerful, life-giving, loving, kind and generous words bring us to living in the light, they help drown out the noise of negativity.

For some of us who are very visual people, we love to see the good and positive words on display anywhere just like Susan. For

others who tend be more in touch with the audio form of hope and encouragement, they need to hear those words more often. And lastly, there are still others who need to feel those words of kindness and generosity in action. And whether those people around us need to see, hear, or feel those beautiful and life-giving words, they probably are looking to see, hear, or feel them from us.

So how about you? Are you someone who is also looking for the positive side of life found in a simple word? Do you keep a healthy word bank handy that is filled with words of hope and encouragement?

I would last less than a week if I worked in a grocery store. It’s mayhem.

Last week I found a half-gallon of ice cream in the soup aisle.

Opened and half-eaten sleeves of cookies. Popped and consumed pop bottles.

Carts and people blocking aisles.

It’s a field day of inattention.

But. A grocery store is a beauti-

ful cornucopia.

I have seen Depression-era documentaries, and inevitably I count my blessings. I can get in my car and drive to a grocery store in minutes and buy everything I need and everything I want, at affordable prices.

One more thing: If there’s a firetruck parked out front, it means firemen are shopping, and that means there are appreciative women who are “shopping.”

And that’s always fun to watch.

Community walk draws attention to suicide prevention Denver Out of the Darkness walk is Sept. 21 STAFF REPORT

Volunteers from communities in the Denver metro area are joining a nationwide effort to draw attention to suicide prevention.

According to a news release, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States and the leading cause of death for young people ages 10-24 in Colorado.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month, and National Suicide Prevention Week runs from Sept. 8-14.

The annual Denver Metro Out of the Darkness Community Walk, hosted by the AFSP Colorado Chapter, begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 at Coors Field. The walk supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s education and support programs and its goal to reduce the annual U.S. rate of suicide 20 percent by the year 2025.

The Denver Metro Out of the Darkness Community Walk is one of more than 550 Out of the Darkness over-

night, community and campus walks taking place nationwide this year. The walks are expected to unite more than 300,000 walkers and raise millions for suicide prevention efforts.

Last year, these walks raised more than $21 million for suicide prevention. Last year the Denver Metro Walk, raised more than $294,000 and had more than 4,600 participants.

“These walks are about turning hope into action,” AFSP CEO Robert Gebbia said in a news release. “The research has shown us how to fight suicide, and if we keep up the fight, the science is only going to get better and our culture will get smarter about mental health. With the efforts of our courageous volunteers, and a real investment from our nation’s leaders, we hope to significantly reduce the suicide rate in the United States.”

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide. AFSP has local chapters in all 50 states with programs and events nationwide.

LIFE on target for growing popularity

Local ranges offer opportunity to socialize, challenge oneself

rchery is challenging, but can also be a way to relax.

It’s a social sport, as well as a way for an individual to strive to achieve a personal best.

“It gets in your blood,” said Jim Murrow of Morrison. “Over all the years, I’m still learning. It seems like every year I learn something new from somebody.”

Murrow, 63, has been practicing archery since he was a little kid, he said. It all started when his mother found a bow leaning against a tree somewhere in Colorado’s mountains sometime in the late 1950s or early 1960s, Murrow said. Through the years, he started receiving bows and arrows as Christmas and birthday gifts.

“As I got older, I developed the interest,” Murrow said. “And it stayed with me through adulthood.”

Murrow currently serves the vice president of Golden High Country Archers and enjoys the sport for hunting and competitions.

“For me, it’s a constant learning process,” Murrow said. “You’re always trying to get better.”

Archery is the sport of using a bow to shoot arrows at a target. It dates back thousands of years — perhaps as long ago as the Stone Age — and evidence of humans using bows and arrows for hunting and warfare can be found around the world.

Today, people practice archery for leisure, hunting and competition.

“Archery is growing in popularity,” said Mark Giebel, director of Highlands Ranch’s Backcountry Wilderness Area.

But despite that, there is a lack of outdoor archery ranges, particularly 3D ranges, in the Denver metro area, Giebel said.

ver the years, Broadway shows have come to embrace all kinds of musical styles, but there are some that show up far less frequently than others.

And among the rarest to make an appearance has to be bluegrass.

Which is just one of the things that makes Steve Martin and Edie Brickell’s musical “Bright Star” a unique theater-going experience.

“The show has the pace and quickness of Steve’s comedy style, but it also has the emotional depth of richness of his fiction,” said actor Merideth Kaye Clark.

“The music he and COMING did together is ATTRACTIONS Edie fantastic, with all these great hooks.”

Audiences will get to see what makes “Bright Star” so special as the first entry in the new season at the Arvada Center, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd.

The show runs at the Clarke Reader center through Sept.

29, with performances at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The show takes place in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and is inspired by a true story. Told in the 1940s, with flashbacks throughout, the story focuses on newspaper editor Alice Murphy (Clark) as she searches for her lost child. The location is reflected in the music and features an on-stage band playing the Americana and bluegrass-driven score.

A mother of two herself, Clark said she was really raw to the losses and triumphs Alice experiences throughout the story’s duration but was particularly drawn to her strength.

“She really exists at the center of the story, and there aren’t many shows where a woman plays that strong of a protagonist,” Clark, who plays Alice at ages 16 to her late 30s, explained. “I get to be a woman who is very knowing and sage to her younger self, who has a lot more naïve hope.”

Audiences might be surprised at the pathos and depth that a comedian like Martin brings to the show, but that is also what makes “Bright Star” such a powerful experience.

“Audiences should open their hearts to the twists and turns of the show,” Clark said. “It’s the kind of show where you’ll both laugh and cry.”

A 3D range is one where participants walk along a course, targeting three-dimensional foam models of animals.

To help fill that need, the Highlands Ranch Community Association opened its 3D archery range in the Backcountry Wilderness Area in June 2018. The range is a mile-anda-half loop on a natural surface trail with 28 separate shooting stations, equipped with lifelike animals as targets.

“The Backcountry range is awesome,” said Josh Bednorz of Highlands Ranch. “It’s a place where my 4-year-old son and myself can spend time together shooting and hiking the trails.”

Being a family-friendly sport is certainly one reason people get into archery, said Mike Schultz, co-owner and general manager of Empty Quiver Archery. But along with that, there are a number of other reasons people enjoy the sport, he added.

The skill-building challenge is one thing people enjoy about it, Schultz said. Anybody can go out and shoot and have fun, he added, “but it’s really hard to get good at it.”

Some people enjoy the Zen aspect of it, Schultz said, and others like the social aspect.

“It offers a getaway from whatever’s going on at home or at work,” he said, but it’s “also a great way to get involved with something and meet new people.”

Schultz has been shooting nearly his whole life — his dad got him into archery about 35 years ago — and he personally enjoys competing and the

Walk through the ring of fire at LCC The music of Johnny Cash is one of the most important voices in American music, and his influence will last for generations beyond his own.

The tournaments are a great way for everybody to experience the range, Whitelock said, because they are open to anybody. Normally, only club members have access to the range, she added, and there is currently a waitlist for membership.

Whitelock, 28, of Centennial got into archery because she was seeking an activity that would provide her with a sense of community after her husband passed away.

“I was welcomed with open arms,” Whitelock said, adding she has now been practicing archery for about five years. A student studying petroleum engineering at the Colorado School of Mines, Whitelock said archery has given her strength that she did not realize she had — physically, academically and professionally.

“I go to the range to keep my head screwed on straight, whether to catch up with friends or relax alone,” Whitelock said. “There’s nothing more relaxing than being outside. And as long as you’re having fun, you’re doing it right.”

Empty Quiver Archery in Broomfield is a 20-yard, indoor archery range with 38 lanes that focuses on recreational archery and training for competitive tournaments, from beginners to state and national champion archers. It offers classes and private instruction, as well as opportunities for people to join a variety of leagues including Junior Olympic Archery

Development (JOAD) and Black Light Archery.

“We help people get started,” Schultz said of Empty Quiver Archery. “It’s common for someone to come and not hit a target their first time, but then they stick with it and eventually start competing.”

Golden High Country Archers club is one that offers local archery tournaments on its outdoor, 13-acre range in Golden. Some of the tournaments are just for fun and competition, such as the club’s Buckle Series, and others benefit a charity, said Morgan

of the Negro Baseball League, Bob Kendrick, president of the Negro League’s Baseball Museum, will be coming to the Lone Tree Arts Center, 10075 Commons St., at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13.

In his presentation, Kendrick will discuss the history of the Negro Baseball Leagues—how players got their start, how they were treated in the league, and how they integrated into Major League Baseball.

In addition to Kendrick’s presentation, attendees can check out the They Were All Stars exhibit, which was developed by the museum in conjunction with Kansas City’s hosting of Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game in 2012.

The exhibit chronicles players from the Negro Leagues who became Major League All-Stars, like Jackie Robinson.

Dana Smith’s “Jitterbug,” a jazzy close-up photo of a petite ladybug (dancing? singing?), was awarded Best of Show in the “2019 Colorado Aperture” exhibit at the Depot Art Center, 2069 W. Powers Ave. Littleton Fine Arts Guild members who are photographers participate in other Guild exhibits, but last year, they decided to mount an exhibit of their own — “Aperture” — as well.

The 2019 juror was Mark Osler, a photojournalist who focuses on the community and educational work of nonprofits. He announced awards at the Aug. 6 reception.

To find the winner, walk upstairs to the baggage platform and look to the right of the far corner.

The show runs through Sept. 28 in the historic red building.

Ichiban Buffet In the Park Meadows mall area sits a new sushi, seafood and grill restaurant. Ichiban Buffet held a ribbon cutting in late August with a “dragon and lion” dance performance.

The Lone Tree restaurant features 25 different Asian dishes and is a new member of the South Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce.

Ichiban Buffet is located at 9271 Park Meadows Drive.

Glazed and Confuzed A gourmet doughnut shop opened a new location just down the street from Cherry Creek High School.

“Born and raised in Los Angeles, one of my first memories was going to the corner donut shop with my family,” wrote Josh Schwab, chef

and owner, on Glazed and Confuzed’s website. With a love for gourmet food, he’s “here to show you, Colorado, that there is more to donuts then just glaze and sprinkles!”

The shop uses “organic, sustainable and local ingredients” in almost all its doughnuts. And if that weren’t Colorado enough, it offers a CBD-frosted doughnut topped with a candied hemp leaf that provides a relaxing quality.

CBD, or cannabinoidol, is one of the many compounds in cannabis plants, and differs from THC, the main psychoactive chemical in the plant.

Glazed and Confuzed sits at 4660 S. Yosemite St. in Greenwood Village.

Closings C.B. and Potts C.B. and Potts, a restaurant and brewery that operates in seven states, recently closed in Greenwood Village near East Arapahoe Road.

Along with craft beer, it offers the typical tap-paired comfort foods with a few curveballs, such as the plant-based “impossible” burger.

The closed spot was 6575 S. Greenwood Plaza Blvd. in Greenwood Village, near Interstate 25 and East Arapahoe Road. C.B. and Potts still

Developments A Centennial space affair The first customer to buy rides on space launch company United Launch Alliance’s newest rocket is another Colorado aerospace company, according to a City of Centennial newsletter.

Sierra Nevada Corporation Space Systems, which has offices in Centennial, has contracted Centennial-based ULA’s new Vulcan rocket to launch Sierra’s Dream Chaser spacecraft on six missions carrying cargo to the International Space Station for NASA starting in late 2021. That first Dream Chaser cargo launch will only be the second for ULA’s Vulcan rocket, the newsletter said.

Decade in business For its 10th anniversary, The Streets at SouthGlenn threw a multi-day celebration with special programs, including a bounce house, climbing wall, facepainting, balloon artistry and a caricaturist, according to the city newsletter.

SouthGlenn was originally the

large, indoor Southglenn Mall built in the 1970s. The outdoor shopping center layout replaced the former mall at South University Boulevard and Arapahoe Road in 2009.

New chamber members TheCoderSchool, which has dozens of locations across the country, is an after-school program for kids learning to code. Its Centennial location recently became a South Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce member.

Founded in 2014 and headquartered in Silicon Valley, according to its website, theCoderSchool combines a small teaching ratio with an individualized learning style and mentor relationships.

TheCoderSchool Centennial is located at 20269 E. Smoky Hill Road, near South Himalaya Street.

Drennen’s Dreams Foundation also recently became a South Metro chamber member. The organization emphasizes the importance of high safety standards for lifeguards, pool management and aquatics facilities.

A Precious Child assists children and families facing difficult life challenges such as abuse and neglect, crisis situations and poverty. We work with more than 440 Agency Partners throughout eight Denver Metro counties including Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Jefferson and Weld to identify children and families in the most need of our services.

Need: Volunteers are needed throughout A Precious Child and we offer an array of volunteer opportunities to choose from for individuals (flexible and consistent scheduling available), corporate groups and community organizations. We accept groups of up to 60 attendees. Currently, we are in highest need of group volunteers and individual volunteers for our Store, Receptionist and Donation Center volunteer positions. Need: Volunteers to care for pregnant cats, dogs and their litters, as well as homes for cats and dogs that require socializing or that are recovering from surgery or injuries.

Other Details: Tutors do not need to speak the student’s language. Most participants are homebound women and small children, adults who are disabled, and senior citizens. Many are not literate in their first language, and remain isolated from American culture.

I carbo load the night before with pasta. Usually the morning before I have yogurt or something small.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

American long-distance runner Shalane Flanagan is one of the most instrumental runners and first woman to win a marathon What would be a perfect race in your sport?

I would like to feel good throughout the race and by the end I’ve used all my energy up because I’ve always had this issue where I leave too much in the tank and I just regret it at the end. I want to have a race where I consistently use my energy and maybe get a PR while doing it.

What is your favorite class in school and why?

Science, because I always like doing hands-on things like labs and such What do you like to do away from running and soccer?

I just like traveling with my family. I like going around to different places.

iley Stewart made a name for herself last year as a freshman cross country runner for Cherry Creek.

Now, in her sophomore year, every competitor recognizes her as one of the state’s elite girls cross country runners.

Stewart was the runner-up in the

2018 Centennial League meet and was seventh in last year’s Class 5A girls state championships.

“Last year I came in with no one knowing who I was,” said Stewart, who is also playing soccer as an outside back for a Real team. “They were like: `She is just sprinting the first mile and maybe she will die.’

Now they know I can push it and there can be some targets on my back.”

COACH’S TAKE: Riley is extremely talented and has a real positive attitude towards running. She works as hard any kid I’ve had in practice. She had a good freshman year and so far we’ve seen an improving path.

What is your favorite movie?

Probably one of those cheesy athletic ones like “Miracle on Ice.” I really like cheesy movies, then I can cry.

Is there strategy in a cross country race?

I have strategies like just trying to push myself that first mile and stay with that front pack. There are girls I like racing with which are equal to me, staying with them and trying to push myself that last mile to the end.

Is there teamwork in a cross country race?

Yes, even if you are not on the same team. You are usually in a pack and you are usually going to be with some girls and you are always pushing each other.

Why are you playing soccer and running cross country at the same time?

I feel like doing two sports at once because it helps me prevent leg injuries. I’ve been real lucky to not have any injuries in either sport.

New coach aims to reverse team’s trend

I

recall talking with former Douglas County football coach Gene Hill after a couple games and he would always say his team needed to learn how to win.

Well, it’s early, but at least the Huskies were winners in their first game of the 2019 season with a 12-2 win over Mountain Range on Aug. 30, which matched Douglas County’s win total for the 2018 campaign.

OVERTIME Eric Rice, who migrated from Fort Collins High School, collected his first win as Douglas County’s new head football coach but said: “It was kind of a sloppy game for Jim Benton us on offense, specifically, but a win is a win.”

It was a needed win for the victory-starved DC football program, which has gone 4-16 in the past two seasons.

“You always want to start off the year 1-0, it doesn’t matter what program you’re at, it doesn’t matter if you are Valor Christian or you are us,’’ said Rice. “But it was maybe a little bit more important for us because we wanted to avoid that `we lost again, here we go again’ type of mentality that could easily have set in if we had not won that game.”

Rice inherited a strong sophomore class left behind by Hill, who is now an assistant coach at Chaparral, but had to put his stamp on the program.

“This was a similar situation when I took over at Fort Collins,” said Rice. “I got hired in 2003 and Fort Collins was coming off back-to-back 2-8 seasons.

“I only know how to do it one way. We started with a summer program. If you are not coming to the summer program, don’t count on playing. You can’t make attendance mandatory but I can sure make playing time what I want it to be based on who shows up to that program and commits themselves on a daily basis and works hard.”

Coloradans compete in Maui Channel Swim Club Greenwood Masters team finishes in 11th place STAFF REPORT

Six Masters swimmers from Club Greenwood participated in the Maui Channel Swim over Labor Day weekend.

Kirk Anderson, of Greenwood Village; Tim Hinchey, of Englewood; Steve Kahl, of Lone Tree; and Michael Mann, Bob Garland and Greg Scott, of Centennial, finished 11th out of 40 teams competing in the timed relay race with a time of 4 hours, 48 minutes, 39 seconds. The first-place Tattersalls Masters Australia finished in 3:19:48.

According to information on the Maui Channel Swim web page, each team member swims a half-hour leg to start the race. After the initial 30-minute leg, team members then swim for 10 minutes each until the final team member crosses the finish line.

“The Maui Channel Swim is a great test of endurance, but more than that a great time to bond with close friends and family,” Kahl said.

The race begins at the pier at Club Lanai on the island of Lanai and ends on the beach in front of Kaanapali Beach Hotel on the island of Maui.

“The best part of swimming the Maui Channel with my Club Greenwood teammates was experiencing the teamwork and encouragement for each other with we had already developed while training together back home at Greenwood Masters,” Scott said. “This helped us get through some very challenging conditions.”

Hinchey agrees.

“It’s always special to team up with my friends from Club Greenwood

Masters for any event, but traveling to Maui was truly a highlight,” Hinchey said. “The conditions were challenging and only made our relay bond stronger. Can’t wait to do it again with these guys.”

In addition to the six swimmers, each team is accompanied by an escort boat, with the captain acting as navigator, and teams are responsible for their own navigation. Depending on conditions and navigation, the fastest teams finish in 3 to 4 hours. The race has a time limit of 8 hours and it is not uncommon for teams not to

finish, the website says.

“What I realized most from this race is the genuine love for swimming and fortitude to never give in that Greg, Steve, Mike, Kirk and Tim have,” said Garland, of Centennial. “It is an honor to have the opportunity to swim amongst them.”

Mann, also of Centennial, said it was “great fun swimming against the Molokai express. Club Greenwood boys learned how to race in the ocean.

He also got his wife, Laurie, to run a speed and conditioning program, relied on strength and conditioning coach David Goodfellow, and didn’t ignore little things in his detailed approach to the season.

“I brought in my wife to run our speed and conditioning program,” recalled Rice. “My wife ran track at Penn State and she is a two-time 400-meter state champion here in Colorado. She still holds the 100and 200-meter records at Fort Collins. I said train like a track team this summer so we can get faster and work on fundamentals.

“We have a really great strength coach here at the school and he does a good job with the strength program. We have a detailed approach. All the way down to little things like why we’re all going to dress the same for practice. Everybody is going to wear the same stuff. I was able to hire a couple assistant coaches who were ex-military and they hold people accountable to the details like nobody’s business.”

One game or win doesn’t make a season but it’s a start for Douglas County.

“All these things add up to the potential to put a decent product out on the field,” said Rice. “That doesn’t necessarily mean a win but there’s a good chance you will be able to compete.”

Honor roll Each week several performances of South Metro athletes and teams will be highlighted. This week’s performances were selected from games, matches and meets between Aug. 30 through Sept. 3.

Regis Jesuit scored 17 fourthquarter points for a 23-13 win over Pomona on Aug. 30. Raiders’ sophomore quarterback Nicco Marchiol completed 17 of 26 passes for 316 yards and a touchdown.

Highlands Ranch quarterback Jake Rubley passed for two touchdowns and ran for another in a 30-20 football loss to Eaglecrest on Aug. 30.

Kate Manley had three hits and drove in four runs and Michelle Salazar also had three hits with one RBI in Arapahoe’s 10-2 softball win over Rampart on Aug. 31.

Castle View’s football team rallied for a 28-27 win over Fossil Ridge on Aug. 30 and the Sabercats gambled to get the win. Castle View went for a two-point conversion in the final few minutes and senior Antonio Ursetta was credited with the twopoint conversion.

Ponderosa quarterback Jack Hanenburg hit on 18 of 30 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns but the Mustangs dropped a 28-21 decision to Parker rival Legend on Sept 30. Ben Beecher led Ponderosa with 17 tackles.
