Crow gets crash course trip in Centennial ‘Lead Locally’ tour hits hot spots for development, tech, education

It’s not every day south metro residents can see their congressman standing at a light rail stop, walking through a tech company or dropping in on a car maintenance classroom.

U.S. Rep. Jason Crow hopped aboard a shuttle bus down East Arapahoe Road as part of his Lead Locally Initiative, an effort to tour cities and towns in the 6th Congressional District and discuss issues different areas face.

“Like so many other communities in the district, affordable housing and transportation dominate the conversation” in Centennial, Crow said. Growth can be positive, he added, but “we have to manage it for sustainability and quality of life.”

On Crow’s ride through Centennial Aug. 23 — his seventh monthly stop since February to tour with mayors and local officials — the Aurora resident checked out some of the hotbeds for development, technology and forwardthinking education in the Centennial area.

That’s a 42-acre — mostly vacant — property on East Mineral Avenue just north of IKEA. A historic site, it sits in the area of the now-closed Jones

International University, considered to be the first regionally accredited university to exist fully online. It’s also one of the most watched developments in the city, promising towering office buildings and hotel, retail and residential space.

Residents want condos — a form of housing more affordable than what Centennial usually has to offer — but those aren’t being built, Centennial Mayor Stephanie Piko told Crow.

“The only way you get to condos and more (affordable housing) is through density,” Marciniak said. “With the cost of construction, you’ve got to build denser.”

But that’s usually not a popular idea with the city’s residential neighborhoods, he added.

The Jones District, which already features some high-end apartments, sits near the RTD light rail Dry Creek Station along I-25.

Standing at that stop, Crow, Marciniak and Piko discussed transportation infrastructure in the area, where cities are looking to tech-minded projects to handle traffic.

The “collaboration between Lone Tree, Greenwood Village, Centennial and Arapahoe County … we try not to impede each other,” said Matt Sturgeon, Centennial city manager. “I don’t think you see that even throughout the Denver metro area.”

Marciniak mentioned Centennial’s underground network of fiber-optic cable, which was completed in late 2018 after construction that began in 2016. That fiber “backbone,” as it’s often called, is expected to enhance city efforts to time traffic lights more responsively to traffic flows using traffic cameras and other monitoring equipment.

Crow often lobbed questions during the tour and asked city officials to let him know about federal funding needs so local municipalities don’t compete for grant money.

Located on the ground floor of Arrow Electronics’ global headquarters along East Dry Creek Road, it opens Sept. 12 and will offer software tools for data gathering and analysis, and a workspace for project design.

It’s expected to see work from partners in the Colorado Smart Cities Alliance, a coalition of cities, other government bodies and private companies focused on issues like transportation, public safety and more.

Students were the ones innovating at the tour’s next stop: the Cherry Creek Innovation Campus, a new careertechnical education facility in the Cherry Creek School District. It sits in the Dove Valley area of unincorporated Arapahoe County, which includes much undeveloped land just south of central Centennial.

The new, 117,000-square-foot campus opened Aug. 12, offering many areas of study — from construction management to cooking, from airplane maintenance to cybersecurity.

As chair of the Innovation and Workforce Development Subcommittee in Congress, Crow had his interest piqued by the facility, and he spoke with an instructor and a student in a machining class. An official with the school district during the tour told him more federal funding is needed to give kids relevant experiences in education.

Having higher-up officials engage in dialogue about Centennial builds a bridge for collaboration when the opportunity arises, Piko said.

“It’s an advantage in having our federal elected official have familiarity with what’s going on on the ground,” Piko said.

City, congressman examine Centennial address confusion Effort underway to see if ZIP codes need fixing for online sales tax

A modern phenomenon has called attention to a problem with decades-old origins: places in Centennial not being called “Centennial.”

“A lot of the time, when you fill online shopping orders, it auto-populates,” Mayor Stephanie Piko said of addresses that should come up under Centennial. “It might put in Aurora for the east — on the west side, it might put Littleton.”

It’s about more than a minor annoyance: Centennial fears it could be at risk of missing out on online sales tax revenue that could be incorrectly sent to surrounding cities because of the confusion.

That possibility has pushed the city to enlist the help of U.S. Rep. Jason Crow, whose office is working with the Colorado Department of Revenue, Centennial officials and the U.S. Postal Service to determine if Centennial stands to lose revenue, Crow said.

“There’s the other issue independent of that, and that’s of city identity.

Centennial is the second-biggest city in the congressional district at 110,000 people,” said Crow, the Democrat who

represents the 6th Congressional District.

Officials in cities near Centennial have talked, and they agree that having ZIP codes that follow city lines would bolster community identity, “instead of these invisible boundaries we have right now,” Piko said.

“Nineteen years later, (residents) are tired of telling people, ‘No, this is Centennial,’ ” said Piko, whose city was formed in early 2001.

The problem lies in the history of ZIP codes in the south metro area. Because an Englewood post office was the original one for much of the local Interstate 25 corridor and East Arapahoe Road area — including places such as the Denver Tech Center and Inverness business park — many places in the Centennial area have carried Englewood addresses, Piko said.

Likewise, because Aurora and Littleton formed long before Centennial, the new city wound up with six codes that overlap it at some point in its map, Crow said. Throughout the 1900s, other communities such as Greenwood Village, Cherry Hills Village and Foxfield incorporated, falling within ZIP code areas with “recommended” names of those older cities, according to the Postal Service’s website.

This isn’t the first time Centennial’s addresses have sounded alarms for sales tax collection — in its first several years as a city, a total of millions in Centennial’s sales tax revenue was sent to Englewood, Littleton and Aurora,

U.S. Rep. Jason Crow Piko said. The city corrected that issue after voters approved Centennial becoming a home rule city in 2008, which allowed it to follow its own constitution, called a home rule charter, rather than the statewide municipal code.

That freed up the city to collect its own sales tax rather than relying on the state to do it, Piko said.

Online sales tax is a relatively new feature of Colorado’s business landscape. In a September 2018 news release, the state announced it would require online retailers to collect sales tax after the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair Inc., which struck down the requirement that a retailer have a physical presence in a state to be required to collect sales tax. The state delayed enforcement of online sales taxes several months to give businesses time to adjust.

Centennial’s look into ZIP codes is still in the process of gathering information and seeing if the city is actually losing revenue, Crow said.

The city has previously attempted

to ask the Postal Service if ZIP code boundaries can be changed, but it didn’t get a response, Piko said.

“The impression (was) that it takes more than just asking. The primary function of the post office is to deliver mail,” not worry about cities’ tax revenue, Piko said.

She hasn’t heard of mail being delayed because its address says “Centennial.” Deliveries depend on the numbered address and ZIP code, not the municipality a person writes, Piko said of her experience with the East Smoky Hill Road post office.

But Piko hopes the push to redraw boundaries might become a regional effort, and the city will be researching what a change might require and taking the first steps in talking to the Postal Service.

“And I think we would need partnership amongst the municipalities to all be asking for the same thing in this area,” Piko said. “Whether it becomes a statewide initiative is another story.”

Aerospace middle school opens at Centennial Airport Charter adds new aspect to flight campus of Wings Over Rockies

The awkward middle school years got an exciting boost for many students last week when Colorado Skies Academy opened at Centennial Airport.

“It was very exciting the see students actively engaged in project-based learning,” said Robert Olislagers, the airport’s executive director. “This morning, I saw students learning about gravity using — I think — coffee filters for homemade parachutes. Several students commented that it was the best first day of school ever!”

The aerospace-focused middle school opened under the Cherry Creek School District after some bumps in its start.

The district halted the school’s application in November, only to have that decision remanded — or sent back — by the Colorado State Board of Education in January.

The school district said it supports the tuition-free public charter school, but the school had failed to meet a necessary condition. Colorado Skies on Nov. 15 was required to provide documents indicating prospective students’ intent to enroll, but the school submitted only 24 letters of intent at that point. The school’s application said it intended to open with 225 students.

The current enrollment is 130 students “and quickly growing,” said Dave

Cieslak, a spokesperson for the school.

Colorado Skies agreed to provide enrollment status updates to the school district and has been keeping officials up-to-date, Cieslak added.

After getting past the regulatory hurdles, Colorado Skies held its first day of classes Aug. 19, kicking off an educational program that focuses on STEAM: science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.

The school — launched by iLEAD, a California-based charter school entity — aims to prepare students for aviation and aerospace careers, its website says. The school is open to all residents of Colorado, not just those in Cherry Creek School District.

Suzanne Acheson, Colorado Skies’ director, said CSA is continuing to grow “and the sky truly is the limit!”

“We are overjoyed that hundreds of families from across our community have embraced Colorado Skies Academy and enrolled their learners at our school,” Acheson said in a statement.

“The overwhelming interest — which spread quickly through the community via social media and word of mouth — shows that parents want their children to benefit from our project-based learning curriculum and participate in our unique aerospace programs.”

‘Smart Cities’ effort shifts focus toward results Front Range alliance brainstorms tech solutions for traffic, sustainability

In the face of crippling traffic and a ballooning population, cities across the Front Range are continuing down what they hope is a “smarter” road to dealing with the growing pains.

“In 2018, it was really about building relationships between the partners,” said Jake Rishavy, co-founder of the Colorado Smart Cities Alliance. “Now, those conversations are moving toward defining projects.”

The alliance — including 19 cities from Fort Collins down to Colorado Springs — gathered in the downtown Denver area for its third time in as many years to spark ideas on issues such as transportation, energy and the environment.

At the CO Smart Cities Symposium on Aug. 20, local government officials and technology industry leaders discussed topics that ranged from internet access in low-income communities to regulating electric scooters on city streets. And although the event focused on brainstorming, one project is seeing concrete progress in the south Denver metro area.

“It’s very difficult to align these efforts across jurisdictions,” said Rishavy, who led a panel discussion on transportation at the symposium.

“Denver south as a community is on the right path.”

The event’s theme, “From hype to action,” nods to the long way the alliance has yet to go in making changes that residents can feel, but here’s a look at what’s cooking and how heads are coming together in the south metro region.

WHO’S IN THE ALLIANCE? The Colorado Smart Cities Alliance formed in September 2017 and shares best practices among its members on tech-heavy and collaborative projects. The group now includes Arvada, Aspen, Aurora, Boulder, Centennial, Colorado Springs, Denver, Fort Collins, Golden, Grand Junction, Greenwood Village, Lakewood, Littleton, Lone Tree, Longmont, Northglenn, Pueblo, Thornton and Westminster.

In addition, Arapahoe County, Pueblo West — an unincorporated area with a metropolitan district — the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the University of Colorado, Xcel Energy and Arrow Electronics — an engineering and technology company — are among the private and public entities also in the partnership.

Denver, South Yosemite Street has become a common alternative for drivers to skirt the highway traffic.

In early 2017, the mayors of Centennial, Lone Tree and Greenwood Village met with the Colorado Department of Transportation and the Denver South Economic Development Partnership — a nonprofit that works to improve the south metro economy — to discuss ways to ease traffic. Yosemite Street was the best candidate for improvement for its high-density load during rush hour.

That road runs through all three cities, and it’s home to a pilot — or starter — project where sensors are gathering data all the way from Lincoln to Belleview avenues.

The data will develop a picture of traffic volume at certain points during the day, along with time spent waiting at stoplights. After the initial data collection phase, traffic lights will be coordinated in an adaptive system to make their timing more responsive to traffic flows.

The cities expect to implement the system after the holidays, according Seth Hoffman, Lone Tree’s city manager.

Centennial’s network of traffic cameras — its Intelligent Transportation System — is already in place on some roads for traffic monitoring. The Yosemite Street project with sensors is one part of the ITS, which also aims to help nearby cities coordinate during traffic accidents.

The Yosemite project is the only one announced publicly so far in the south metro region, said Rishavy, who is also the vice president of innovation for the Denver South Economic Development Partnership.

The ITS connects to Centennial’s underground network of fiber-optic cable, which was completed in late 2018 after construction that began in 2016.

‘Laying the framework’ Although the spark that led to the Yosemite project predated the Colorado Smart Cities Alliance, which formed in September 2017, the three cities involved — along with CDOT — are part of that group.

The alliance has brought “tremendous value” to Lone Tree because “like traffic congestion, very few problems

start or stop at our city borders,” Hoffman said.

“We have been sharing information about the Lone Tree Link, our popular on-demand shuttle system, with many other organizations,” Hoffman added.

“Now we’ve figured out how to deliver shared, on-demand rides and see that it’s taken cars off the road, we’re hopeful that other cities and agencies will offer the same or similar service to reduce traffic congestion across the region.”

Centennial Mayor Stephanie Piko attended the symposium, where much of what was shared could apply to Centennial, she said.

“We have started to lay the framework for smart technologies through our fiber backbone and ITS,” Piko said.

“I’d also like to recognize many Centennial-based businesses are making their mark in the realm of being ‘smart.’”

On the way Possible future projects are being discussed with south metro cities and counties, Rishavy said.

“Traffic engineers, public works, community planners and other technical staff from Centennial, Lone Tree, Greenwood Village, and Arapahoe and Douglas counties work together regularly on projects with the support of the Denver South Transportation Management Association,” Rishavy added. The TMA is a partnership of local governments and private entities in the south I-25 corridor working toward transportation solutions.

Last month, the alliance launched a formal process, the “deployment board,” made up of all the alliance’s cities, Rishavy said. The board will evaluate proposals, prioritize what the cities want to work on and propose those projects to their industry and academic partners, he added.

“The future is going to be the collaboration between many parties and aligning interests of these stakeholders,” Rishavy said. “Understanding (that) will become the challenge of the future.”

Getting together for one last splash Former lifeguards gather to remember summers past before old pools replaced

Ryan Gangloff came all the way from Connecticut to jump into Holly Pool in Centennial one last time.

“I feel 20 years younger,” said Gangloff, 39, as he bobbed in the pool he knew so well as a young man.

Gangloff, his wife and two kids made the 1,800 mile journey from the East Coast to join other former Holly Pool lifeguards to bid farewell to a place that meant so much to them.

This season is the last for the old municipal pool, built in 1977 near Arapahoe Road and Holly Street.

The day after it closes on Labor Day, construction is scheduled to begin on its replacement, an upgraded aquatic facility featuring swim lanes, a fancier slide and a leisure pool for littler swimmers. The new pool is scheduled to open by Memorial Day 2020.

The replacement is one of three taking place this winter across South Suburban Parks and Recreation District. Harlow Pool in west Littleton and Franklin Pool near deKoevend Park in Centennial — both built in the 1960s — will also be torn out to make room for newer facilities designed to cater to a wider age range. Former lifeguards held reunions at the other pools as well.

The old pools are also simply worn out, said Anne Harston, South Suburban’s aquatics coordinator.

“Pools just have a lifespan,” Harston said. “The pumps and equipment get really hard to maintain. It’s just time, but that doesn’t mean this isn’t bittersweet.”

Getting the old crew together was a thrill, said Jill Abney, 35, a teacher at Denver’s East High School.

“I’m proud of my career now, but this was the best job I ever had,” Abney said. “If I could go back in time and be a teenager hanging out with

these guys by the pool all summer again, I’d do it in a heartbeat.”

The old crew laughed over old hijinks, like the time in the summer of 1997 when Gangloff and fellow lifeguard Derek Resler convinced a Rocky Mountain News photographer they were training for the Olympic diving team.

“When we saw our picture in the paper, we just howled,” Gangloff said.

The old pool will be gone, said Courtney Agenten, 34, who flew in from Minnesota with her husband and two kids for the reunion, but the camaraderie forged all those summers ago will remain.

“It was never really about the pool,” Argenten said. “It was about these people.”

City council candidate profile: Christine Sweetland

Cherry Knolls neighborhood president urges action on affordable housing

Most city councilmembers don’t know real estate as well as Christine Sweetland.

Her job as a certified residential appraiser — someone who assesses the value of homes — takes her all over the Denver metro area, from Brighton all the way down past Castle Rock.

And past the knowledge of the housing market, the gig also gives Sweetland perspective on what’s on residents’ minds.

“I have an opportunity to go in, to meet with people and hear what they have to say about concerns about the economy and jobs,” said Sweetland, a Centennial City Council candidate for District 2. “I drive over 15,000 miles a year. With my job, I can see what’s happening in other communities, and I can bring that back to Centennial.”

Sweetland is also president of the Cherry Knolls Improvement Association, a body that addresses that neighborhood’s needs.

District 2 includes the part of the city north of East Dry Creek Road and mostly west of South Quebec Street.

It excludes the farthest west part of town.

Here is a look at Sweetland’s policy positions in her own words. Responses were lightly edited for clarity.

What’s the most important thing you want to accomplish in office?

I think of Centennial as being in those teenage years, and so, my biggest goal is to focus on who we are as a city 10 years from now … I want to make sure we have opportunity and growth for everyone but maintain that suburSweetland ban lifestyle that we’ve come to love … I think development is necessary, but it has to be the right kind. It needs to enhance quality of life that we currently enjoy.

Smart growth is an often-used buzzword.

What does that look like to you?

I go into north Denver, Sloan’s Lake and all those areas — it’s overpopulated. They forgot that it was a residential neighborhood, and now you can’t even park … Each neighborhood is going to be a bit different, but we really need to understand, if we do this, how does it change what’s already there?

The Jones District, that’s great redevelopment … It was a business complex, and now it’s right by the light rail station… I’m excited to see how that pans out because I think it revital-

izes the whole area. So that, to me, is smart redevelopment, forethought and planning … Just for what I’ve seen in the metro area, when they put a light rail station in, the neighborhood gets revitalized.

What is your approach to transportation and “smart city” initiatives?

If you look at Englewood, it has that great shuttle bus. Lone Tree has a great shuttle bus — I’d like to see us do something like that. With the redevelopment of Streets at SouthGlenn, if you did a shuttle bus to Arapahoe (RTD station) or even to Littleton Station, you wouldn’t have to worry about as many cars on the road.

It’s not just getting people to work — it’s getting people to shop and eat.

I think we need more bike lanes in Centennial. Colorado Boulevard, if we did something that hooked up to the C-470 bike path … we need to think about getting people out of cars.

What is the best way to maintain retail sales tax base in Centennial?

I was just in a meeting and someone said, “Well, we’re just Centennial.” I think we as a city need to do a better job of promoting ourselves. We have two of the top school districts in the state … we have above-average income, above-average education levels.

I think if we promote that, I think we’re showing people this is the place where people want to put their stores

and retail outlets.

What issue is city council not paying enough attention to?

Affordable housing. Allowing your teachers, firefighters, police officers to live in the community in which they work. I think it’s important for our children, if they want to come back to this community, that they can afford to, (without) living in their parents’ basement.

What a lot of people forget (is) they think affordable housing is publicassisted housing. What we’re talking about is the people who are in public servant position actually being able to afford to live in the community they serve.

It could be apartments, could be condos, could be single-family homes.

I think we need to have a comprehensive plan. We need to work with developers and the communities, and city council needs to reach out … get all the stakeholders in a room and talk about what this looks like.

How can the city best take care of its increasingly aging population?

Their aging-in-place programs are great … Someone in my neighborhood is in the Senior Commission, and it’s amazing all the “Active Seniors” programs they have … We just need to do a better job of getting the word out of SEE SWEETLAND, P22

In today’s world of monthly active shooter drills at schools, social media, and an unrelenting 24-hour news cycle, the pressures teenagers face are, in many ways, unrelatable to most adults.

With all this emotional and hormonal turmoil, teens and their parents or trusted adults might not be able to differentiate between normal teenage moodiness and more serious mental health issues.

That’s why Robbie’s Hope Foundation has developed an adult handbook that provides a roadmap on how to talk to teens about their feelings and their mental health.

“Having open lines of communica-

tion with teens on an ongoing basis can be a first step in signaling a potential issue, such as depression, anxiety, or thoughts of suicide,” Kari Eckert, executive director of Robbie’s Hope Foundation, said in a news release.

While many professional resources exist for how to talk to teens about these critical issues, the new adult handbook was created by teens to help parents and other trusted adults — teachers, coaches, youth group leaders, mentors, etc. — initiate and navigate ongoing conversations with the teens in their lives, Eckert said in the release. It reflects how they, the teens, would want a trusted adult to engage in these conversations with

them.

The adult handbook provides tips for when it is important to have a conversation with a teen, how to choose the right place and time and how to navigate the conversation.

Bennet hopes voters are ready for steady Colorado senator brings voice of moderation to Democratic candidate field

Michael Bennet was about as fired up as he ever gets at the Iowa State Fair’s Political Soapbox, railing against Bernie Sanders’ health care plan — but politely.

“I respect him because he tells the truth about what’s in his plan, but I disagree that that’s gonna get us universal health care in America,” said Bennet, a Colorado senator and decidedly lower-tier Democratic presidential candidate.

He prompted boos from the crowd, most of whom were waiting in the heat to see Sanders speak shortly after him, but Bennet wasn’t too fussed. As admirers thronged to the Vermont senator, Bennet went on to tour the fair and hop aboard a few rides with his daughters.

Bennet is pursuing the presidency as the anti-Donald Trump: measured and moderate. Contemplative and competent. With the energy in the Democratic Party radiating from the

left and the president so often shouting from the right, Bennet’s journey has been a lonely road.

But he insists he won’t change course.

“If we are forever trapped in a world of instantaneous celebrity that is driven by social media, it may be that I’m not the person for that time,” he said in an interview. “But just like with many other things, I prefer not to think that we’re living in a permanent state of a brokendown political system that won’t deliver on all the promises these candiBennet dates are making.”

Bennet’s odds of winning the Democratic presidential nomination are as long as his thoughts are deep.

His new book — “The Land of Flickering Lights: Restoring America in an Age of Broken Politics” — is his version of an urgent call to arms to restore American democracy and no one’s idea of a bestseller.

And yet, Bennet is tying his candidacy to perhaps the most audacious proposition of all, that voters may actually crave the opposite of the relentlessly turbulent tenure of Trump.

He made that pitch explicit in a tweet, pledging, “If you elect me president, I promise you won’t have to think about me for two weeks at a

time. I’ll do my job watching out for North Korea and ending this trade war. So you can go raise your kids and live your lives.”

Very much not Trump James Carville, a top strategist on both Bill and Hillary Clinton’s early presidential campaigns, is bullish on Bennet because he believes that “the way to beat Trump is to be as profoundly different from Trump as you can be.”

“Just be nice, be calm, get out of everybody’s face,” he said. “If the country is looking for the most unlike Donald Trump person, I think Michael Bennet is that person.”

Carville said he’s spoken to other Democrats who believe Bennet would make the best president out of any candidate in the field. Carville said he would make an even better nominee than Joe Biden because “he’d be new, different, younger and ... could project forward.”

But before Bennet can even be taken seriously as the challenger to Trump, he must emerge from a field of two dozen other Democratic hopefuls, including a cluster that shares some version of his pragmatic approach, such as Montana Gov. Steve Bullock and Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar. Many trees must fall before primary voters would see Bennet as their alternative.

He is at his most animated when he is assailing “Medicare for All,” Sanders’ signature policy proposal and one also embraced by Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

“I really believe that, better than the other people that are in this field, the agenda that I’m pursuing is an agenda that Democrats in Iowa and South Carolina, New Hampshire and Nevada will recognize themselves in,” he said.

Indeed, some voters in Iowa do see an appeal in Bennet’s calm.

“That’s what I want — someone who’s really steady, and he has a reputation for being really knowledgeable about policy,” said Linda Simonton, a 71-year-old retiree from Des Moines, after seeing Bennet speak at the fair.

“He knows what he’s doing. He’s worked in the Senate, he’s worked on immigration, he’s worked across the aisle.”

And the Des Moines Register editorial board praised Bennet after sitting down with him, encouraging caucusgoers to give him “more attention.”

“He offers a much-needed reality check on the promises candidates are offering,” the board wrote.

Bennet is Trump’s opposite even in style. Compared to other candidates who shout or sermonize on the stump, Bennet tends toward monotone that can make his speeches sound like a well-intentioned lecture from someone’s father. On the stump at the state fair, Bennet, who delayed his entrance into the race because he had prostate cancer, even joked to the crowd that they should get their prostates checked.

Some like calm style Asa Leonard, an 18-year-old art student who saw Bennet in Knoxville, Iowa, said he was “charmed” by the senator’s style.

“He’s very much a dad-jokey kind of guy, very nice and calm and open, and a little stern but not aggressively so,” he said.

That style appeals to even some voters who identify as more progressive.

Leonard, who said he favors South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg or Sanders to Bennet, said Bennet was “the most compelling person from the moderate policy lineup.”

Still, some of Bennet’s supporters are skeptical that he can break through. Phyllis Weeks, a 69-year-old Democratic activist, enthusiastically asked Bennet if he needed donations to get into the next debate because “I think you have some really good things to say.”

Weeks said she liked that he’s a “steady hand” and “has a lot of authority and wisdom,” but said she was skeptical of his chances in the primary.

“I don’t know that Michael Bennet can win the nomination,” she said.

And Simonton, who saw Bennet at the fair and said she likes that he’s a “nice kind of mild-mannered guy,” also admitted “it’s actually my belief ” that a more “macho” guy would be more motivating for voters.

“I have to think about who other people would like ... like with Steve Bullock, I think, OK, here’s a really good-looking, kind of macho, nice guy, all wrapped up in one, that I think a lot of people would find really appealing,” she said.

Bennet’s heard this kind of thing before. But he doesn’t feel compelled to change his style, or his message, to prove them wrong.

“I’ve heard people say ... are you too nice?” he said. “But I think what they’re really asking is, `Are you tough enough for this? And I think I am tough enough for this.’”

Walking with a purpose The annual Relay for Life raises more than $46,000 for American Cancer Society

Colleen Schwarz, of Franktown, was surprised when she was diagnosed with cancer 11 years ago.

She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2008. Two years later, her son, Ryan, was diagnosed with skin cancer on his right calf.

“It takes friends and family to pull you together,” Colleen Schwarz said.

“You don’t even know what you need.

Now, both cancer-free, Colleen and Ryan lead their own team in the annual Relay for Life fundraiser for cancer research.

“The reason I’m here is to make sure everyone has a chance to be a survivor,” Colleen Schwarz said.

The Relay for Life of South Metro Denver drew $46,276 in donations for cancer research by teams participating in the 24-hour walking relay run by the American Cancer Society.

Colleen Schwarz, of Franktown, and her son Ryan have each been diagnosed with cancer, in 2008 and 2010, respectively, and have since been cured. Family, Colleen said, is a big reason she is here today and she wants to support others in the same way.

Want to be a mermaid? Fin, have it your way

I

just heard about something called “mermaiding.”

It’s been around for a while, but I do my best to stay out of touch, partly because some of these things come and go almost overnight.

The first professional mermaids appeared around 2004.

Nonprofessional mermaids swim in local pools, lakes, river, and oceans.

Some don’t even swim. They just pose.

I watched a video that described the appeal of mermaiding. It didn’t sound any different than swimming without a tail.

Speaking of tails, you can order them online, and they come in all sizes and colors. Matching tops can be purchased.

They are mostly marketed for girls, young women, and women. Some are marketed for boys.

There are high-end prosthetic tails that cost thousands.

I grew up with crayons. Later I was given a bicycle. After that, I was handed a baseball glove.

I saw a 1948 film on televsion titled “Miranda” when I was in high school.

It stars Glynis Johns, as a mermaid named Miranda.

Johns was a shapely woman with a distinctive, husky voice. Modern audiences have forgotten about her.

But not me.

A married doctor goes on a fishing trip, and catches Miranda, who pulls the doctor into the water, and keeps him in her underwater home until he agrees to show her around London.

Spoiler: The final scene shows Miranda on a rock, holding a merbaby.

No more excuses — so much to learn, so much time

ow many times have we given the excuse that we have so much to do with so little time? If you’re like me, then that number is probably countless.

As we age, and sciGUEST ence keeps us alive for more years than COLUMN we ever thought, I have begun to realize what a shallow excuse that is.

As a college-educated EuroWestern white woman, and termed-out state senator, I thought I was pretty well informed. Although Linda Newell I was, to many standards, my adult daughters and friends of color convinced me that there was much more to learn beneath the surface. I had al-

As consumers, I am confident that we are all thankful for companies that work towards continuous improvement in their products, services, and processes. And if we are part of working for any organization, we are probably extremely grateful when our company places the same amount of energy and emphasis on the continuous improvement of their people.

Companies that invest in their people enjoy the benefits of less employee turnover, higher revenues, better morale, and greater shareholder value.

When companies choose to invest in the continuous learning of their people, through both formal and informal education, they will also experience greater engagement, which in turn, creates greater productivity.

Today we have something called “immersion art exhibitions.” Instead of being a passive consumer of something as humdrum as a painting or a sculpture, gallery and museum visitors are immersed in the art, engaged with the art, one with the art.

The thought of it gives me a headache.

I acknowledge that I am a dullard. I don’t need a tail, or a goat, and I don’t need to immerse like a tea bag.

I’m not sure what I would do if I came home and found Jennifer in the tub wearing a tail.

Maybe I’d say, “Are we going to need to get a water bed?”

But as I know now, it has been through my dominant culture lens, without the perspective of those with lived experience in the margins. Although I was raised interfaith, I knew some about the holidays and practices of other religions, but very little about why others believe or think as they do because of their faith.

In 1984, Ron Howard directed “Splash.” It stars Tom Hanks, who falls in love with a mermaid played by Daryl Hannah. He names her “Madison” after Madison Avenue.

Ironically, Hannah had been swimming with her legs bound together since she was a little girl, after reading Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Little Mermaid.”

Over the last few years, I’ve also learned the real history of how our country was founded and built on liberty and prosperity for us white people on the stolen land of the North American Indigenous peoples and the backs of the enslaved Africans.

I realize this isn’t easy to talk about, especially in our mostly white Christian suburbia. But if we are to thrive and prosper as a community, we need to better understand all others so we can get along, neighbor to neighbor.

The world is changing and becoming more diverse, and so is Colorado. The more we ignore or resist the truths or people around us, the more we starve as a people — either socially, cultur-

ally, or financially.

Yes, we may have much to do in our lives every day, but we can also admit that over the years we live, we can find time to learn from sources outside our own bubbles of perspectives. The more we learn and understand about ourselves and others, the more we’re able to empathize.

The more we can empathize, the better our lives are in relationship as individuals and as a community.

37th annual food and music fest will take over Civic Center Park for Labor Day weekend

Taste of Colorado returns to Civic Center Park in downtown Denver for another Labor Day weekend, bringing with it 48 different food trucks and vendors and thousands of hungry mouths.

The annual food festival begins Aug. 31 and finishes Sept. 2 The festival is free to enter and open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, and from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m on Sept. 2. This will be the 37th annual A Taste of Colorado festival.

More than 500,000 people turned out throughout the long weekend last year.

It is the largest food festival with free admission in the state. In addition to the 48 food vendors will be almost 200 retail vendors, a Kids Zone with arts, crafts and a children’s entertainment stage.

The event began in 1983 to bring people together through food and music. Now, the festival is bigger than ever. USA Today ranked A Taste of Colorado No. 4 on its 2019 list of Best General Food Festivals.

KC and the Sunshine Band will headline the festival’s first night Aug. 31, along with Kool and The Gang and Grand Funk Railroad. Then Sept. 1 will be a day for country fans with Dwight Yoakam and Remus Tucker headlining.

Monday will have a host of contemporary music from Toad the Wet Sprocket, American Idiot, Scott Stapp Voice of Creed and more. A total of 32 live bands and artists will perform. This year’s festival will have a larger main stage.

Pork shouler steam buns, Hop & Hoe Zach Stoller owns Hop & Hoe, a food truck specializing in food with farmto-table ingredients. Stoller is from New York City and moved to Colorado in 2017. Just 10 months into his new business, the former culinary student said he’s excited to receive feedback on one of his specialties: steam buns garnished with pork shoulder, hoisin sauce, pickled red onions and cilantro.

“Denver as a whole isn’t on the food radar as of yet — not as much as (Los Angeles) or New York City — so I feel this festival could give Colorado a lot of traction in the food industry and show what we do as chefs,” Stoller said.

“There has been a big influx of people who have come to Colorado, me being one of them, so this could be different than last year just because of that.”

Reggae fusion tacos, Marcia and Joe’s Kitchen This Jamaican specialty food truck will be serving its famous reggae fusion tacos at A Taste of Colorado — a Jamaican take on the Mexican staple. A choice of jerk chicken, curry chicken, curry shrimp, jerk pork, carne asada or al pastor is served on a flour or corn tortilla.

The tacos come in three and are served with a side of cabbage to garnish.

Marcia and Joe’s Kitchen is located in Steamboat Springs and serves braised oxtail, curry goat and chicken, and jerk pork and chicken.

A Taste of Colorado features food items found throughout the state -- from Jamaican cuisine to flavors born in Colorado.

Kalahari chicken wings, A Taste of Soweto Mpho MaPoulo, of Colorado Springs, wants to introduce the taste of his home country South Africa to Americans with his start-up food business A Taste of Soweto. MaPoulo and his wife, Ocean, hope to have their own food truck come October. Ocean is the chef who makes the specialty stews and kota chicken and rice bowls — “kota” refers to the quarter loaf of bread used as a bowl, traditionally.

The MaPoulos offer it over rice as well.

A Taste of Soweto only has five menu items, but, Mpho MaPoulo said, they have adapted over the months to fuse

One of the five items A Taste of Soweto will be serving up is Kalahari chicken wings — a South African twist on the Buffalo pub classic. The wings are tossed in a coriander-based Kalahari sauce, named after the Kalahari Desert in South Africa.

“It’s a very signature spice in South Africa for the sausage, but we have sort of invented a new food item all together — we use the spice on chicken wings,” MaPoulo said. “The whole idea is to make something recognizable or appealing to a different group of people, like Americans.”

About 200 attended this annual Western Welcome Week event, organized by longtime resident Charlie Carroll.

Troy introduced his quartet’s set as selections “from the Great American Songbook” and Cateret began with “Fools Rush In,” followed with Johnny Mercer’s “I Remember You” and continued with silky renditions of standards as Troy’s fingers danced across the keyboard.

A retired professor, Clark can’t resist educating his audience a bit — so we heard about rags, “Mississippi type” and others. As a kid in New Orleans, Louis Armstrong got a trumpet and learned to play rags, playing with King Oliver’s band.

Oliver, on tour, called the young man to Chicago to play with his band … the rest is history. At those early New Orleans concerts, they played a cake walk. Best dancers would perhaps win a cake to take home.

Clark reminisced about early jazz pianist Jelly Roll Morton, who “traveled the country with a band — and was also a great pool hustler and ran an `escort service’ …” “He made a lot of money,” Clark observed. Morton’s “Black Bottom Stomp” followed on the program. Then we learned about trombonist Kid Ory and his Creole trombone, as illustrated by Eric Steffan. “A traditional Dixieland band par excellance,” Clark said.

Cars still more efficient than newer SUVs Expert cites ‘law of physics’ when giving nod to smaller vehicles

Yes, your sport utility vehicle has gotten smaller and more fuel efficient over the years. But even with those gains, SUVs still are behind cars when it comes to gas mileage.

The reason: SUVs are taller and heavier than cars, and no matter how sculpted their bodies are, they still run into more wind resistance.

“It comes down to the laws of physics,’’ said Jake Fisher, director of auto testing for Consumer Reports. “All things being equal, if you put the same powertrain (engine and transmission) in a vehicle that is taller and heavier, you’re going to get better fuel economy out of the car than with an SUV.’’ A comparison by The Associated Press of the 10 top-selling 2019 SUVs and comparable cars with similar gasoline powertrains found that in all cases, cars beat the SUVs in mileage, in several instances by 14% or more. The comparison is between two-wheel-drive vehicles.

The Detroit Three automakers all have stopped making many of their

sedans as buyers shifted dramatically toward SUVs and trucks. But the companies said they would be ready with more efficient gas-powered SUVs as well as hybrid and electric utilities if gas prices spike.

About 70 percent of new-vehicle sales in the U.S. are SUVs and trucks and 30% cars as buyers opt for higher seating and more space to haul people and goods. It was about 50-50 just six years ago. SUVs also often are all-wheel-drive for better bad-weather performance, and they usually can tow heavier items.

Around a decade ago, many SUVs were based on truck underpinnings, and often their names were preceded by the words “gas-guzzling.’’

But as fuel prices spiked at times during the early 2000s, more efficient car-based SUVs started to gain in popularity.

Large truck-based SUVs are still around now, and they, too, get better mileage. But few gasolinepowered SUVs come anywhere close to comparable cars, according to Environmental Protection Agency estimates.

For instance, the most efficient gas-powered SUV in 2019, the small Nissan Kicks, gets 33 miles per gallon in combined city and highway driving. But the most efficient gaspowered car, the compact Mitsubishi Mirage, gets 39 mpg, 18% better.

Another good comparison is Hon-

da’s CR-V compact SUV and a similarly equipped Civic compact car.

With the same engine and transmission, the Civic gets far better mileage. A two-wheel-drive CR-V gets 30 miles per gallon in combined city and highway driving, but a Civic with the same 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and continuously variable transmission gets 36, or 20% higher. On the highway, the difference is even more pronounced with the Civic’s 42 mpg beating the larger CR-V by almost 24%.

Likewise, Toyota’s Highlander midsize SUV with a 2.7-liter fourcylinder engine gets 22 mpg in combined driving, but the recently updated Camry midsize car gets 34 mpg with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The Camry has a more efficient transmission that pushes its mileage 54% higher than the comparable Highlander, which will be updated for 2020.

Jeep’s Cherokee small SUV falls short of the mileage of the discontinued Dodge Dart compact car, even though the Cherokee was updated in 2019 and the Fiat Chrysler stopped making the Dart in 2016. A frontwheel-drive Cherokee with a 2-liter four-cylinder engine gets 26 mpg in city-highway driving, while the Dart mileage with a similar engine is 1 mpg, or 4% higher, at 27.

Even though SUVs and truck sales keep growing, research shows buy-

ers still want better fuel economy, said IHS Markit Principal Automotive Analyst Stephanie Brinley.

Most buyers, though, pick the type of vehicle they want and then check for mileage, she said.

That’s exactly what Sabrina Walker, 28, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, did when she bought her 2010 Toyota RAV4 small SUV. She wanted the added cargo space to haul things for her house, go camping and transport her two dogs. She decided on an SUV, but then picked the RAV4 in part for its mileage. It can get up to 24 mpg in combined driving and 28 mpg on the highway, according to EPA estimates.

“I won’t ever go back to a small car, not unless it’s a sports car,’’ she said. “It’s always going to be an SUV for me.’’

Brinley says consumers will return to cars en masse if gas prices spike at the same time economy goes sour and people think their jobs are threatened.

Brian Moody, executive editor of Autotrader, predicts some buyers will return to cars after they no longer need larger SUVs to transport children and their gear. As more automakers cancel car models in favor of SUVs, sedans that are left will be top-notch vehicles, updated with new technology that includes smaller, more efficient turbocharged engines, he said.

Navajo code talkers honored for crucial service in WWII Young Marines gather to learn from veterans who helped transmit top-secret messages using Navajo language as code

Nine members of the Douglas County Young Marines in Centennial traveled to Window Rock, Arizona, to honor and learn from the Navajo Code Talkers from WWII.

Nine members of the Douglas County Young Marines were among more than 150 Young Marines from across the country who gathered in Window Rock, Arizona, to honor and learn from the Navajo code talkers from World War II. Every year on Aug. 14, the Navajo nation celebrates the World War II veterans who served their country by transmitting top-secret messages across enemy lines using the Navajo language as code. It was the only code unbroken by the Japanese in World War II. The Young Marines have traveled to Arizona each year since 2006 to celebate the Navajo code talkers and to meet the remaining survivors in

person. To date, there are five remaining Navajo code talkers from the 420 who coded messages in World War II, according to a news release.

The Navajo Code Talkers’ story had been top secret for years, but the Young Marines help to keep their legacy alive.

“Navajo Code Talkers Day is an event that the Young Marines and the Navajo Code Talkers look forward to every year,” Brenda McNulty, Young Marines event coordinator, said in the release. “Our partnership between the descendants of the Navajo Code Talkers and the Young Marines has strengthened year after year since 2006. It is a collaborative effort in

which both parties create a successful event for everyone to enjoy.”

The Young Marines participate for three days on the Navajo reservation.

They escort the Navajo Code Talkers during Navajo Code Talker Day and participate in a parade, a trail run and clean up, community service at a zoo, and museum education.

“Just being around these exceptional veterans make us feel as though we could take a step back in time,” Col. William P. Davis USMC (Ret), national executive director and CEO of the Young Marines, said in the release.

“The Young Marines are assuring the legacy of these very special veterans.

They will not be forgotten.”

Rachel Garcia, who plays softball for UCLA. She is not a PO. She pitches almost every single game but hits fourth in their lineup and she is an all-around good player.

What would be a perfect performance in soccer?

Throwing no-hitters or one-hitters is nice but for me it’s about getting my defense involved in a game.

What is your favorite class in school and why?

It’s a tie between math and science.

What do you like to do away from softball?

I do TSA which is Technology Student Association. You basically compete in a bunch of STEM-based events.

rapahoe senior softball pitcher/infielder Kayleigh Krueger never wants to see the abbreviation PO next to her name.

“Most pitchers are PO which means all they do is pitch,” explained Krueger.

“For me I like to help my team in pitching but I like to help in other ways too. I don’t want to ever be a PO.” Krueger, who is looking to continue

her education at a college where she can major in engineering and play softball, came into this season with a 27-15 record and one save as a pitcher and has a .403 career batting average in 65 games.

“A majority of my family are engineers,” she said. “I’ve always been interested in engineering and math and science. If you are a civil engineer, it’s about helping your community to help build like buildings and roads. It is giving back in that sense.”

COACH’S TAKE: ‘She has been on varsity for four years and played a lot of softball in the summer. She did a lot of schoolwork. She is trying to increase her test scores because she is looking at high academic schools.’

What is your most memorable moment in high school softball?

Making it to regionals last year because that was the first time the softball program at Arapahoe has ever made it to regionals.

What rituals do you have before or during a game?

When I’m getting dressed I have a specific way to put on my uniform. I have a lucky pair of sliding shorts. When hitting, I always take a cut and then tap my bat on the plate.

What is your favorite movie?

“The Benchwarmers.” It is hilarious. I can quote almost the whole movie.

What is your favorite song?

“Ain’t No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye.” I like oldies.

What do you think of the double first base in softball?

It is just more safe. I kind of like it because sometimes it’s hard with just a single base if the base runner is running through and you are getting the ball.

Key stats | In two games this season, Krueger has a 2-0 record, allowed three hits and struck out 20 batters in nine innings pitched. She has gone 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs batted in.

Four local golfers bound for national tourney

ent Moore of Centennial, let’s just say, is a veteran golfer who relies on his years of experience to keep pace with younger players.

He will be making his sixth appearance in a U.S. Mid-Amateur tournament, which will be held next month at the Colorado Golf Club in Parker and CommonGround Golf Club in Aurora.

Moore was one of four golfers to advance to the national tournament in a Mid-Amateur qualifying tournament that featured 81 players on Aug. 19 at The Club at Inverness in Arapahoe OVERTIME County.

David Lysaught of Denver was the medalist with a 1-underpar 69 while Moore, Matt Call of Castle Rock and Ryan Axlund of AuJim Benton rora each carded even par rounds of 70 to earn a spot in the Mid-Am, which will be held Sept. 14-19.

The 36-hole stroke play portion will be held at Colorado Golf Club and CommonGround on Sept.

14 and 15 with the low 64 competitors advancing to match play, which will be hosted at Colorado Golf Club in Parker.

The Mid-Am is for amateur players who have reached their 25th birthday as of Sept. 14 and have a handicap index that does not exceed 3.4.

Moore has been a dominant player in the state with eight Colorado Golf Association titles but he is now 63 years old. He feels grateful to be making his 11th overall appearance in a USGA tournament.

“For me at 63, it is kind of a great gift to play with really good players and be in the mix of the event and the dinner,” said Moore. “It will be great fun. Making the cut is a long shot but I will give it my best shot.”

He made enough shots to qualify on Aug. 19.

“I kept the ball in play and didn’t miss any short putts, which is always good for an older guy like me,” said Moore.

“For me, I put a lot of pressure on myself because I really wanted to qualify for this event at my home club,” he said. “I probably put too much pressure on myself because I hit some squirrely shots but at the end of the day it worked out.

“You have to grind and just stick to it. It’s grinding out pars, and if you hit a bad shot just shake it off and keep banging away. I didn’t think 70 would be enough — turned out it was. Now you have to get it around for 36 holes (at the Mid-Am) and get into match play. That’s the key.”

The qualifying tourney at Inverness was the second local event.
