‘Serial entrepreneur’ is involved resident of Cherry Knolls Swing down south I am 36 years old and have lived in Centennial since 2017. Before, we lived in the Cherry Creek area and ended up here by way of luck. When my wife and I were shopping for a home, we were underwhelmed by the houses in Denver proper. When we saw our home in Cherry Knolls, it was an oasis in comparison.

Laying down roots I founded the Cherry Knolls Dads’ Co-op and currently serve as its president. The Dads’ Co-op is an organization to promote fellowship among neighbors. We get together every few months and have created a lot of friendships and have done some good for the community.

As for giving back, the co-op hosts a neighborhood dinner, sponsored by a nearby Chuy’s, benefiting Food Bank of the Rockies. This year, we had about 225 neighbors attend our dinner and hit our goal of providing 2,000 meals for the food bank.

Ways to reach out Although I’m fairly new, I have seen

much of the neighborhood form closer bonds. Our neighborhood has at least a dozen events, but I have seen a lot of new ones form: cornhole tournament, Kentucky Derby party, chili cookoff, golf team.

Our immediate neighbors have also formed a “scooter squad.” About twice a week, we see about half a dozen kids racing down the hill in front of our house on whatever they can get their hands on — scooters, bikes and so on — all while parents chat it up in the driveway ... It never gets old watching some little girl send it down the hill on her scooter wearing a princess dress and tiara helmet.

Being a believer Honestly, the communal aspect of the neighborhood is contagious. If you ask my wife, I came to the ‘burbs kicking and screaming, but have become the biggest ‘burb-evangelist since. We love the great schools, newly established businesses, beautiful parks, all the other amenities south suburban Denver has to offer.

Drilling down I am a serial entrepreneur. I have owned several companies, but I am most passionate about the oil and gas industry. My belief in the generational value of land ownership compelled me to start Clear Creek Royalty — a mineral rights acquisition firm. In-N-Out Burger submits proposal for Lone Tree location The coming of the famous California eatery has been long anticipated by Coloradans

Lone Tree could be home to the Denver area’s first In-N-Out Burger.

In-N-Out has submitted a proposal to the City of Lone Tree for development of a new restaurant in the Park Meadows area, according to a site improvement plan submitted to the city Aug. 15.

The famous burger joint headquartered in Irvine, California, has locations throughout California, Nevada, Arizona, Oregon and Utah.

There are currently none in Colorado. Colorado Springs will be home to the state’s first In-N-Out in 2020. The Lone Tree location would be the first in the Denver metro area.

The proposal is for a 3,867-squarefoot building at 9171 Westview Road, the current location of a Suds Factory car wash, and includes drivethru capabilities, a 26-car parking lot and outdoor seating area.

“The City of Lone Tree is excited

about the potential of being one of the first In-N-Out Burger locations in Colorado,” the city said in an emailed statement. “We pride ourselves in being a business-friendly municipality and always look forward to welcoming new businesses into our community. Plus, we know that In-N-Out Burger will be one that many people in our community, and beyond, will be thrilled to see.”

The site improvement plan must be approved by city staff before it goes before the planning commission and then city council for approval.

Construction is expected to take six months, if and when plans are approved by the city. The restaurant is expected to be open by January 2021, according to the SIP. In-N-Out is a fast food restaurant specializing in burgers, fries and milkshakes. It will be open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m., according to the SIP, with a staff of 15-20 associates per shift.

City council candidate profile: Ron Phelps Engaged citizen with ‘learning and organizational’ skills eyes District 1 seat

Many Centennial residents don’t think their opinions matter, said Ron Phelps, a city council candidate for the west part of town.

That’s what Phelps, who leads an effort to inform residents and collect their input on the possible redevelopment of The Streets at SouthGlenn outdoor mall, wants to change.

He’s an Air Force veteran who has experience in the “learning and organizational development” industry, where he’s designed ways to learn that help meet goals for Fortune 200 organizations as well as the military and public entities.

Phelps has served on citizen committees regarding open space, budget and ethics for Centennial and Arapahoe County and as a victim advocate with the Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office. He currently works for Denver Water.

Council District 1 is the far west part of Centennial, encompassing most of the portion between South Broadway and South Colorado Boulevard.

Here is a look at Phelps’ policy posi-

tions in his own words. Responses were lightly edited for clarity.

What’s the most important thing you want to accomplish in office?

It has to do with what I’ve learned with this ongoing redevelopment at The Streets at SouthGlenn: Residents don’t feel included in the development process, and they believe it heavily favors the developer …

Right now, many of the residents don’t trust their city leaders. They don’t think their opinions matter. The city elected folks and staff will say, “Well, of course they matter, and I care,” but perception is reality here. If people don’t feel that officials actually value those opinions, then there’s still something that needs to be addressed.

‘Smart growth’ is an often-used buzzword. What does that look like to you?

“Smart growth” is this trend in urban planning, and it’s all about increasing density … How can we put more amenities and allow people to work where they live, and that’ll help

us in our traffic problems and some other things we’re faced with.

But I don’t think growth equates to having or creating a thriving city … I think (we should) focus on the quality we have before we focus on quantity … If growth is wanted, then the retail sales tax is a big part of that answer.

In District 1, the shopping centers are ground-level; there’s not a second story to them. Some of them are struggling. So is it about adding more retail, or is it about what type of retail goes into these areas? And I’m not an expert, I’m not an economic development guy, but I’m not about packing it in.

What is your approach to transportation and ‘smart city’ initiatives?

The city is using the fiber network to aid in the traffic management system, and I think that makes sense. From a budget standpoint, should the city provide that kind of infrastructure?

I’m not convinced of that. It could be the right answer, but I need to learn more. I’m a limited government guy, so I want more private answers than government answers.

The city has a transportation master plan, and it was passed by city council back in late 2013. But it includes traffic data from 2008-09, and as far as I know, that is the current master transportation plan passed over five years ago, and it has data that’s over 10 years old.

I think we need a new plan.

What is the best way to maintain retail sales tax base in Centennial?

For all municipalities, the retail strategy has been affected by all the online shopping we do … That impacts the strategy in place, which is that brick-and-mortar locations will provide the tax base the city needs ...

As far as the best way to maintain, it’s a moving target right now. We need to l have a viable and a flexible economic a development plan.

Donations to food bank flat as needs climb IFCS is scaling back offerings in face of influx of hungry people

The shelves are starting to look a little thin at one of the south metro area’s biggest food banks.

Donations are flat at Integrated Family Community Services — formerly called Interfaith — while the numbers of people who need help just keep climbing, said outreach director Todd McPherson.

“We’re in real financial turmoil,” McPherson said. “We’re getting too poor to serve the poor.”

The agency has traditionally offered a wide range of services to lowincome locals, including bus passes, gasoline vouchers, help paying for medications and hearing aids, and utility bill assistance, but McPherson said the agency is scaling back or eliminating many of those programs to focus on core functions like making sure people stay fed.

While the agency’s budget has stayed flat at about $700,000 a year over the last decade, the number of people coming in for help has been steadily increasing by 2,000 to 5,000 a year, said program director Allison Taggart. The

“The need in the suburbs is very real,” Taggart said. “Just because someone’s housed and owns a car doesn’t mean they’re not struggling to stay fed.”

Despite the area’s boom economy, Taggart said, wages have remained relatively flat in the face of skyrocketing housing costs, pushing single parents, veterans, the elderly and people with disabilities to the margins.

The influx got worse this year when both HOPE and Cornerstone food banks in Englewood closed their doors, with many of their clients ending up at IFCS, McPherson said.

About 40 percent of the clients being helped by IFCS are from Englewood,

Climbing client loads mean the agency can’t get as closely involved in people’s lives as in the past, Taggart said.

“Our goal has always been to provide a hand up, not a handout,” Taggart said. “In the past that’s meant

helping people pay rent or bills in times of dire need.”

But with those funds dwindling, Taggart said the agency is focusing on services like filling backpacks with school supplies for low-income kids.

LPS students head back to class First day of school year is a new beginning for Newton sixth-graders

Incoming sixth-graders run beneath the intertwined arms of student ambassadors from the upper grades, who welcomed them to their first day of middle school.

School was back in session for Littleton Public Schools students on Aug. 16, and for sixth-graders at Newton Middle School, that meant going to a new school.

They’ll get yet another new school before they reach high school, as the current Newton building near Arapahoe Road and Colorado Boulevard in Centennial is slated for replacement in the next couple years, part of a nearly $300 million bond approved by voters last fall.

But for now, it was a day of new beginnings. For Stacy Weiss, who was on hand to see her daughter Devon off to her first day of middle school, it was bittersweet.

“She’s not a little girl anymore,” Weiss said. “And yet, she still is. These are the years that kids start to figure out who they really are. I told her to just be herself and she’ll do great.”

Weiss said Devon told her the night before that she was nervous about starting a new chapter.

“I asked her: What are you going to do with that nervous energy? She told me, ‘I’m just going to let the nervous juices flow.’”

No teachers had yet arrived in their classroom, but these sixth-graders stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance on their own accord.

Motorcyclist killed in crash, suspect arrested

A Commerce City man was arrested Aug. 19 in connection with a fatal car and motorcycle crash in northeast Douglas County.

The Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office arrested Manuel Frias-Cabrera, 29.

He was being held on $50,000 bond at the Douglas County jail.

Frias-Cabrera faces charges of vehicular homicide, failure to remain at the scene after an accident, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and careless driving resulting in death.

The city has a Senior Commission, and ... I think the city can do a lot by educating seniors on county services, state services, private entities and nonprofit services. It’s a role of educating, informing and advocating for, and not providing services directly.

How can the city best address high housing costs and the regional issue of homelessness?

On homelessness … I have in my head these three different groups: One, someone who wants to live that way by choice, and then there’s those who, for reasons out of their control, found

Witnesses reported to police they saw the driver of the car involved in the crash flee on foot. The driver returned to the scene after the crash, according to a news release. The rider was pronounced dead at the scene.

“While this is still an open and active investigation, traffic investigators do believe that drugs and/or alcohol may have been a factor,” the news release states.

The sheriff ’s office stated it will not release a photo of the suspect “due to the active investigation,” the report reads. themselves homeless ... and a hand up to get back on their feet (is needed). I don’t see that as something the city provides; I think that’s a regional solution.

And then there’s the third group, who are not emotionally or mentally healthy ... They become very well-known to law enforcement, and they go through and are released, and I don’t have an answer to that, but it most definitely is a regional issue.

With high housing costs, that’s a supply-and-demand thing … The city isn’t going to get involved in how many homes are available and the pricing of homes … The city’s role in housing costs should be about protecting private property rights, and the city can protect property rights by not burdening residents with fees or regulations that put more government on homeownership.

Farmers market pops up in former Albertsons lot Fresh produce, other products on sale at location across from Arapahoe High

Against the backdrop of a bare, once well-known storefront, canopy stands bearing phrases like “Palisade Peaches” and “Todd’s Heirloom Tomatoes and Produce” have taken up shop in the parking lot.

It’s the Centennial Farmers Market, just steps away from the former Albertsons at South University Boulevard and East Dry Creek Road, and it takes place Wednesdays through the end of October.

“The city said it would be good for the community,” said Gary Hartshorn, of Gourmet Gary’s Natural Food, who helped organize the farmers market.

Centennial City Councilmember Kathy Turley pushed for the market taking that location, reaching out to the company that owns the shopping center, Smith said. Eventually, Smith and Hartshorn had the green light.

Boulevard for about four years, but they needed a new space.

The city has been looking to bring energy to its neighborhood shopping centers, some of which are home to empty former stores. For Smith, it was a perfect opportunity.

“We’re definitely not farmers for the money,” Smith said. “It’s about a service for the community. It’s very

rewarding when people come and thank you for growing the produce.”

Hartshorn’s business sells Colorado-raised, grass-fed beef, and Smith grows microgreens, lettuce, squash and other produce.

For Elizabeth Latham, who lives near Arapahoe High School, the market’s new location was just what she needed.

“You can’t buy good tomatoes in the store, even if you go to Whole Foods and pay $10 for them,” said Latham, 70, who moved from Glenwood Springs about a year ago to take care of her grandchildren.

“I’ll be here every week until they stop coming,” Latham said.

The market began Aug. 7 and is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays at 7424 S. University Blvd.

Views from an expert in the laughingstock market

could give a two-day seminar on the No. 2 pencil, but I couldn’t have an intelligent two-minute conversation about the stock market.

Those words — “stock market” — have intimidated me since the first time I heard them. I don’t remember when that was, but it might have been in an American history class.

Perhaps when I first heard about the Stock Market Crash of 1929. I still don’t understand why that happened. I have the facts right in front of me: it lasted four days, it was the worst ever, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 25 percent, and it lost $30 billion in market value.

Now: What is the Dow Jones Industrial Average?

See what I mean?

And it’s hopeless.

I have no plans to educate myself.

I am, primarily, right-brained, and there are some things that my mind resists. The stock market is one Craig Marshall of them.

Smith I was reminded of this when I read “Dow closes higher after China blinks.” Should I sigh with relief ?

I have skipped past the business section in the newspaper for decades. There are no pictures, just numbers, and a language foreign to me.

“Arbitrage,” “averaging down,” and “day trading” mean nothing to me.

The consolation is — or might be — that I know how to talk about abstract art with the best of them.

Left-brained people often are just as inept when it comes to a conversation about abstract art as I am when it comes to talking about Dow Jones.

I guess insiders call it “The Dow.”

I can’t do that, because I’m on the outside.

I wondered if there was a man named Dow Jones who was responsible for all of this, and I discovered it was two men: one named Dow and one named Jones.

Then why isn’t it the “Dow & Jones Industrial Average”?

Charles Dow was a 19th-century Wall Street journal editor.

(I know how Wall Street got its name, by the way.)

s it our time management skills that need a little work, or is the enemy time compression?

“Tomorrow is often the busiest day of the week” — Anonymous How true. And we all know what the problem is when we push things off to tomorrow, the problem is that tomorrow we push them off again to the next day, and then the next day, and then the next day. The question is: Why? Perhaps it is one of these two things, time management or time compression. It is probably a combination of the two.

As I speak with people about this topic, and I ask them which one they believe it is, they initially point to time management and a perceived lack of skill. Yet after they consider the words, “time compression” for a moment, they often realize that this may be the real driver or reason they are struggling with time management. And not managing their own game clock correctly is keeping them from achieving the success they were pursuing.

Why does time compression happen? One common reason people shared is that they are saying “yes” to too many things in all areas of their lives and spreading themselves too thin. In trying to keep up with the rush and crush of life, trying to be liked and please everyone at home and at work, they stack too many things into each day and come to real-

ize there is no way to get it all done.

The unintended consequence here is that they often miss deadlines and deliverables, letting down others and more importantly, letting themselves down. Learning to say no will help us all to become better at avoiding time comWINNING pression.

WORDS Another common theme that came up was not managing the game clock. We see it all of the time in sports as there is a play clock and a game clock going at the same time. When we are taking on projects Michael Norton and tasks, when we are in meetings, and even when we are in a sales call, we have to manage the clock better. If we have an hour to get something done or complete a meeting, we can avoid the feeling of time compression by understanding where we are in relation to the time that we started with on the game clock and where we are along the way and adjust as needed.

One mistake I see and hear about all too often is the salesperson who schedules a 60-minute meeting with a prospect and they soon run out of time. When they get there and start their discussion and questioning,

Do your part to define south metro community As chairman of the South Metro Denver Chamber Board of Directors, I’d like to thank everyone who’s shared thoughts and ideas with me over the years. It is apparent many have a deep appreciation of what we all cherish about this special place — a feeling that our unique shops, restaurants, and storefronts are what set us apart from Everywhere USA. The South Metro Chamber is now in its 100th year. We all are the beneficiaries of generations working together to create our thriving business community. Those who came before took pride in character and diversity and championed a business ecosystem that balances a foundation provided by large corporations with contributions brought by local, small entrepreneurs making their own way.

It’s a balance that isn’t easy to maintain, and it’s ever-changing.

You may be wondering if I own any stocks. I wouldn’t know where to begin. I am sure I would have invested in New Coke.

I have seen copies of The Wall Street Journal, cold and gray and humorless. It disappoints me that I haven’t given it a chance. I feel the same way about chess.

Chess will be another gap in my resume. I know about Chess Records, and that’s about it.

they quickly forget how much time they scheduled or lose track of time, and before they know it, there isn’t any time left on the clock for presenting their solution or for identifying very clear next steps. The unintended consequence here is that a scheduled sales call became a very nice visit and conversation, but it was not a sales call, and worse, there was no sale.

Time compression can lead to stress, and we all know stress is very bad for our health. We all have the same 24 hours in a day, and the people who are achieving the greatest levels of success and enjoying peace of mind are those that have learned how to say no to some things so that they

can say yes to the important things.

They have also learned how to manage their game clock personally and professionally and set proper expectations for themselves and others along the way.

n esports or competitive video game player is like a Formula 1 driver, says James Love. He says every reaction in the two sports demands intense, unbroken focus, and adds that esports athletes incorporate multiple gym workouts into their training schedule.

“The notion that esports players aren’t athletic is ignorant and outdated, to be blunt. Serious players put in six to 10 hours of gaming per day in order to hone their skills, and even though it looks like they’re sitting still, they’re exerting a lot of effort,” said Love, a communications director for the Philadelphia-based esports network N3rd Street Gamers, in an email.

The esports network opened up the Lakewood-based Localhost esports arena last year, an 18,000-square-foot facility that offers 120 custom-built gaming PCs and video game consoles like Xbox Ones and PlayStation 4s and a 60-foot stage for events and tournaments. Love says business has been well, noting that the esports arena has put on “huge” three-day championship events with combined prizes of $25,000.

It’s expected that global esports revenue will exceed $1 billion this year, according to a report by esports analytics firm Newzoo. The esports industry has seen names like former MLB player Alex Rodriguez, NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal and celebrities like Jennifer Lopez investing in esports companies and teams.

“While gaming has always been a form of entertainment, three factors contributed to it becoming a sport: competition, tournaments and spectators. The number of people who count video games as a primary source of entertainment and leisure has been growing steadily since the invention of the joystick, plus more and more video games are being designed with the core goal to be played competitively against others,” said Love. “On top of that, you have an increasing amount of brands and products that consider esports the best way to reach their target demographic.”

Competition through video games Ryan Barr started running esports tournaments in Colorado before he took his line of work to a national level. In that role, he’s traveled around the country, including to New York, Illinois, California and Pennsylvania.

Now he is focused on providing a platform for any esports player through The National Championship Series. The league gives esports players an opportunity to compete in video games such as Call of Duty, Fortnite

The schools offer partial or full-ride athletic scholarships where esports players are coached. Over 70 schools associated with the National Association of Collegiate Esports offer

scholarships.

In Colorado, schools like Colorado School of Mines, Colorado State University, Johnson & Wales University, University of Colorado Boulder, University of Colorado Colorado Springs and the University of Denver have esports teams.

“I have the passion for the game, and it’s just my passion to become pro. Esports is a sport, and people are starting to recognize it,” said Gavin Norman, an 18-year-old esports player who has participated in The National Championship Series.

W

ith the whoop of a siren, lollygaggers cleared Main Street, and the Grand Parade of the 91st annual Western Welcome Week began rolling through downtown Littleton on Aug. 17.

The theme of this year’s event was “The Tradition Continues.” Perhaps that sounds a smidge more vague than previous themes, focused on teachers, first responders or veterans.

But as the parade advanced, the beauty of the theme became apparent.

In a world and a state and a city that can often feel increasingly divided, here was the parade you grew up with.

The one your grandparents grew up with.

The Westernaires clopped past, the riders straight-backed and grinning.

With them were high school bands and color guards. Old tractors and hot rods. The Mountaineers square dancers, do-see-do-ing on a flatbed trailer.

Sure, there were changes. A new sheriff and a new Congressman rolled by. The fire trucks say South Metro on the side now, though the Black Pearl, the mighty ladder truck of Station 12, still led the way.

Yet among the crowd were those who have seen their fair share of Western Welcome Week parades, like Rip Hobson, former chief of Littleton

Tips for celebrating National Dog Day National Dog Day is celebrated on Aug. 26. National Dog Day celebrates all breeds, pure and mixed and was created to help raise awareness of how many dogs need to be rescued in local pounds and shelters each year.

‘Great motorcycle and business leader’ dies at 75 Gary Myers once owned Fay Myers Motorcycle World in Centennial area

Gary Myers, former owner of Fay Myers Motorcycle World, died at 75. Myers was a well-known motorcycle racer in his youth and, later, a successful mountainbike racer.

He started out as a junior champion rider, and he ended up a beloved leader in the powersports world.

Gary L. Myers, former owner of Fay Myers Motorcycle World in the Centennial area, died Aug. 4. Myers, a resident of Golden, was 75.

He “worked to protect motorcycle riders’ rights on road and off road,” said Jason White, current general manager of the Fay Myers dealership on East Arapahoe Road.

The Lakewood-area native had been enduring heart problems and was in home hospice care when he died. A serious bicyclist for decades, he remained active even late in his life, riding 300-400 miles a week, according to an obituary release from the Schomp Automotive family, which owns the Fay Myers dealership.

Gary Myers was a well-known motorcycle racer in his youth. He lived in the Netherlands for 18 months and became the Dutch Junior Champion, an online obituary said.

And even far into his adulthood, he dug his feet into mountain bike racing and won multiple national championships and a world championship in the 1990s in his age class, according to the obituaries.

His father, Fay Myers, was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and founded Fay Myers Motorcycle Company in 1948 on West Alameda Avenue in Denver. Gary Myers assumed leadership of the company in the 1970s and, with his motorcycle racer’s enthusiasm and knowledge, built it into the better-known Fay Myers Motorcycle World, the

The shop relocated after a “catastrophic fire” in 2002, White said.

It sits at 9700 E. Arapahoe Road in Greenwood Village, just a short walk west of the Centennial border.

Myers successfully managed the business through the fire, the online obituary said.

The business sold in 2004 — after which Schomp took over — but Gary Myers still carved out a place as a “great motorcycle and business leader in the powersports world,” White said.

Nonprofit helps support safety items for K-9 officers Back the Blue has provided vests, harnesses, collars and more STAFF REPORT

A group of Centennial residents is working to help purchase safety vests and equipment and provide for health needs for area K-9 officers.

Since the nonprofit formed, Back the Blue K-9 Force has helped provide equipment for K-9s at the Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office, the Greenwood Village Police Department and the Parker Police Department, according to a news release from Diane Lewis, one of the co-founders of the nonprofit group.

The nonprofit recently gave a donation of $20,525 to the Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office for the purchase of K-9 officers Mako, Nuke and Zero, the release said. The nonprofit’s work in 2018 also resulted in finding an individual to pay for the purchase of K-9 Arrow and a business to pay for the purcase of K-9 Roman, the release said.

The three founders, Lewis, Jennifer Leggatt and Judy Anderson, all of whom live in Centennial, began their mission in March 2016, when they heard about ballistic vests for K-9s that were lighter weight and covered

The group contacted the Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office and learned that it did not have the new vests. A month later, the group had raised enough money for six vests — four for

Arapahoe County and two for Greenwood Village, the release said.

The founders decided to form a registered nonprofit so they could countinue raising money for items that would ensure the safety and wellbeoing of the K-9s, the release said.

Since its inception, the Back the Blue group has funded harnesses,

muzzles, breakaway muzzles, fur saver collars, K-9 Trauma Kits, Narcan and many othr items the K-9 handlers ask for, the release said.

Money raised also has helped pay for four gastropexy surgeries, and three more are expected soon. According to Lewis, gastropexy surgeries are procedures that staple the dogs stomachs so they don’t twist. Twisted gut injuries in dogs are almost always fatal, Lewis said. When the K-9’s stomach twists, there are often no symptoms until it is too late.

Back the Blue has funded the surgery for two Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office K-9s and the two K-9’s at Greenwood Village. In addition, it will fund the surgies for Nuke, Mako and Zero when they get a bit older, Lewis said.

Some of the group’s upcoming fundraising plans include an event at Topgolf on Oct. 27, the sale of discount cards, similar to what some high school students sell, and the sale of stuffed K-9s at its events. The group also will be at the Firearms Festival on Sept. 14 at Centennial Gun Club, 11800 E. Peakview Ave., Centennial.

Catwalk features special needs fashionistas, first responders Developmental Pathways Fashion Show was first held in 2015

“This is right up her alley,” her mother, Jennifer, said. “Anytime she has an excuse to get dressed up, she’s all about it.”

Armstrong was the first to strut on stage. She was accompanied by Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock as they both waved to the crowd at the end of the catwalk.

The fifth annual Developmental Pathways Fashion Show at the Park Meadows mall gave a stage to kids and adults with developmental disabilities, who strutted the catwalk in personalized outfits donated by Macy’s. The fashion show is an event Developmental Pathways and the mall have hosted each year since 2015 to give those with developmental disabilities the chance to shine onstage in front of a crowd.

the CEO of Park Meadows had this brainchild to put on this event and bring together the community, get our name out there and generate awareness, but more so to give a different face of what we’re doing,” said Natalie Coulter, communications manager for Developmental Pathways. “I think it’s great to incorporate first responders, too, because it’s two different sides of folks who are in public service but in different spheres.”

A large crowd covered Centennial Center Park well beyond the space in

front of the amphitheater’s stage Aug. 10 as three local acts carried the night.

Colorado-based folk-alternative band Pandas and People, Arvadabased soul singer Hazel Miller and an Eagles tribute band, The Long Run, performed in that order.

Centennial Center Park sits at 13050 E. Peakview Ave., near East Arapahoe Road and South Potomac Street.

IFCS was hoping to jump-start its fundraising this summer with a new outreach campaign called One Can Feed, that included an advertising blitz with newspaper fliers, email blasts, radio ads and mailers.

The goal was to raise $30,000 in July and August, McPherson said, but halfway through August the campaign had netted just $11,000.

“If everyone who saw or heard it gave a dollar, that would equal about $130,000,” McPherson said.

Meanwhile, Taggart said, assistance from local, state and federal governments is spotty and dwindling.

Downstairs in the agency’s food bank, shelves of some staples like chicken noodle soup and canned corn are full, but McPherson said those

don’t come close to providing real nutrition to people in need.

“It’s a lot of starch and salt,” McPherson said. “Nutrition is important. It’s closely tied to not just physical health, but mental health.”

Some items, like fresh produce, dairy, eggs and meat fly out the door as soon as they come in, Taggart said. Keeping toiletries like shampoo and toilet paper on the shelves is hard too. Many shelves are starting to go bare.

IFCS is always grateful for donations of food, Taggart said, though she said the agency can make better use of cash.

“There’s only so many cans of pumpkin we need,” Taggart said.

“We’re doing everything we can to address the need in our community.

We hope the community thinks what we’re doing is important and wants to help us do this work.”

More personally, friends at the Fay Myers shop remembered Myers as a man with a knack for caring.

“He was the best person I ever worked for. We had a lot of fun and did a lot of business,” Fay Myers parts manager Scott Rosenthal, who starting working with Myers in 1979, said in the release. “We always

went trail riding or motocross riding on the weekends.”

Fay Myers sales manager Gary Merrill recalled when Myers came to the shop a couple of months ago for a retirement party.

“He could remember every person who ever worked there … it was a family affair,” Merrill said in the release. “He came down here often, and everybody was always happy to see him … My phone has been ringing non-stop with people calling expressing sorrow and telling Myers stories. He told me once that when

you’re dying, all you have is memories. Exactly right. We have the greatest memories in the world.”

“He had one of the best measures of a life well lived,” Mark Myers, his son, said. “It’s unbelievable the number of people who’ve reached out to me to tell how much he was loved.”

He is survived by his mother, his partner, his two children and their spouses, three grandchildren, his sisters, a niece, and two nephews.

And, the obituary said, “countless friends.”

“Our goal has always been to provide a hand up, not a handout. In the past that’s meant helping people pay rent or bills in times of dire need.”

“The idea is that if we can cover the cost of school supplies, you can put that money toward your car repairs, or toward getting those bills paid,” Taggart said.

The agency’s school supply assistance is a godsend to Mark Pacheco, an IFCS client and father of four growing kids.

“They need shoes all the time,” Pacheco said. “Bills start adding up.

If it weren’t for the backpacks we get here, worst-case scenario, the kids would just be going to school without supplies. When you can’t provide that stuff, as a parent, it makes you feel like a failure. It means so much to us.”

The CHSAA Board of Directors in June approved a Mental Health Initiative that mandates all coaches take a course on mental health and suicide prevention. It could be a class set up by the various school districts or one offered by the NHFS Learning Center.

Colorado and the CHSAA has been recognized nationally for the valiant effort to try to help troubled teenagers.

OVERTIME “We were inundated not only statewide but from national media for the steps that we took,” said BlanfordGreen. “Everything that we have heard has been positive.

When the CHSAA Jim Benton mandates things, sometimes we get pushback, but this probably is the first thing we’ve put out in a long time that 100% of the people say it was the right thing to do.

“We’re not doing it because we want any accolades. We’re doing it because we have kids in crises. It opened the door for us being elevated as a state looking for the best interest for our kids socially, emotionally as well as physically.”

CHSAA Assistant Commissioner Jenn Roberts-Uhlig is the head of the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee, which spearheaded the creation of the initiative.

“Everyone in this state is trying to wrap their heads and arms around kiddos to see what we can do to support them and see if we can make this go away,” said Roberts-Uhlig. “If we can hit it from all angles, that’s our goal.”

CHSAA tries to minimize the amount of mandates placed on coaches but national data reveals that steps need to be taken.

In the most recent 2017 data available, the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control reported that for youngsters of all races and sexes between the ages of 10 and 19, there were 3,008 suicides in the United States for a population of 41,910,114, which works out to a crude rate of 7.18.

Chris Ball is a Grammy-nominated songwriter who has composed music for many television shows and toured for seven years as a musician with the rock band Firefall.

The 53-year-old Highlands Ranch resident still found time to become a competitive amateur disc golfer.

“When I traveled with Firefall, I brought my discs with me sometimes and I would go play,” Ball said. “I would do a lot more at home. It is just so easy to get out for an hour at a park near my house or to a field just to go practice and hone the same shot over and over again.

“Going back to my teenage years, I loved to play freestyle Frisbee, just playing in a park. I just thought disc golf was a lot of fun at first. It was just kind of fun to mix Frisbee and golf, throwing at a basket. We’ve come a long way from throwing ultimate discs at trees in a park and calling it ‘golf ’ `or ‘frolf ’ ‘’ Disc golf can be hard to play.

Plans call for an 18-hole course to be built on the West Fork Open Space in Highlands Ranch, west of Broadway, between Plaza Drive and Highlands Ranch Parkway. The project is a partnership between the Highlands Ranch Metro District and South Suburban Parks and Recreation District.

In mid-April, the course at David A. Lorenz Regional Park, at the intersection of County Line Road and Colorado Boulevard, closed because South Suburban is building a new regional recreation complex at the site.

The development of a parking lot for the new course is being worked out between the Metro District and Douglas County, a Metro District spokeswoman said. A timeline for course construction has not been finalized, and next steps include professional course design, she said.

Fairway drivers are easier to control and usually have more glide time. Midrange discs are bulkier and less aerodynamic with a more rounded outside lip. Putters are shaped more like traditional Frisbees and are heavier.

“Disc golf, I would have to say over the past 10 years, is a growing sport here in Colorado and across the country,” said Ray Woodruff, the Colorado Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) coordinator and Rocky Mountain Women’s Disc Golf Championship tournament director.

“I was first introduced to the game in 1996 and enjoyed several years of recreational play until joining the tournament scene in 2007. I have been on the board of directors for the Mile High Disc Golf Club since 2011.”

In a 2019 PDGA demographics report, the association reported it has 120,000 lifetime members and 46,00 active players. Colorado has 1,195 PDGA participants. The PDGA points out that as many as 500,000 people play the sport regularly. The 2019 PDGA course directory lists 6,316 courses in the United States.

There are more than 100 courses listed in Colorado. Some courses are private and many were created by homeowners associations.

“Practicing in a field is the key to what it takes to be a decent player,”

Ball said. “The sport is fun, there are hundreds of free courses nationwide and you don’t have to be a great athlete to enjoy getting out in the fresh air and playing. But to become really good, just like anything, you have to

practice.

“Now, I play for the love of the game, being outdoors and in Colorado, where we have incredible courses up in the mountains. We have great courses in and around Denver, and

it is free. That’s a big part of it. The only thing that costs you is if you lose a disc.”

According to PDGA demographics, only 8% of its membership is female, but there were 134 women who played in the Rocky Mountain Women’s Disc Golf Championships on Aug. 2-4 at Purple Park in Superior.

Erika Weir, a PDGA member since 2014 who resides in Denver, was one of the entrants in the Open division.

She finished fifth.

“What makes a good disc golfer to me is the first thing you have to do is be patient and be willing to learn,” Weir said. “A lot of times, you have discs that may or may not work for you and you need to work through them or be willing to switch to another disc. Obviously being passionate and having a good work ethic about it is super helpful. If you have any background in throwing it’s helpful. Maybe you throw a football or maybe you were a former softball or baseball player. Those skills translate, too.”

Brandon Nelson, of Littleton, has been playing disc golf for 10 years.

The president of Dragon Disc Golf Club — which on its website lists “home courses” in Aurora, Littleton and Greenwood Village — is the director for six local tournaments this year.

“The sport is growing worldwide,” Nelson said. “I know the Denver area has a huge disc golf following.

It’s going to continue to grow. It’s growing every year and it’s not on a downward trend, either.”

Crude rate is the number of deaths occurring in a specified population per year, usually expressed as the number of cases per 100,000.

In Colorado, there were 99 deaths for a 719,586 population figure and a 13.76 crude rate, which is almost double the national average.

“Our culture in society right now — this is what we need to look at to make sure the kids are in a good spot mentally, regardless of how they are playing on the field or in the gym,” said Pomona gymnastics coach Tracey Boychuk.

“The Mental Health Initiative is a great reminder for us that have been doing this for a long time and it will be a great ad for new coaches coming in.

“It is a reminder that being a high school coach is more than just coaching skills. It’s being a linguistics coordinator or a counselor when needed, being a first aid responder when needed and all those things.”

Two seniors at Arapahoe died by suicide within three days of each other last October in the most recent tragedies at the school. In 2013, a student was shot and killed by another student who also killed himself. In 2017 two Arapahoe students and a Powell Middle School student died by suicide.

Mark Hampshire, boys and girls soccer coach at Arapahoe, cautions that more needs to be done other than having coaches taking classes and watch videos.

“I hope this is step one,” he said, “but it’s not enough. Having been really close to the worst of the final stages of the struggles with mental health in our build-

ing, there certainly needs to be a recognition that there are issues going on in our community for the youth and people in general.

“To able to use our sports and the team scenario to try to foster some positive things and be a problem solver is not a bad thing.

I’m a little leery about reactionary stuff. It’s better than nothing for sure but it’s a much bigger issue than a 15-minute video.”

CHSAA is supporting a Mental Health Monday campaign this fall with resources for student-athletes, coaches and others a couple times each month.

Mid-season form Boys golfers, most of whom have been playing all summer, were the first of the fall athletes to jump into high school competition, and there have been some good scores recorded in a few of the early season tournaments.

Bo Wardynski of Regis Jesuit carded a 5-under-par 67 at Overland Golf Course on Aug. 8 to be the medalist at the first Continental League meet of the season.

Nick Fallin of Rock Canyon had an even par 72.

At the Cherry Creek Invitational held Aug. 13 at Buffalo Run, Arapahoe’s Will Kates tied for third with a 2-under-par 70 and Creek’s Charlie Flaxbeard tied for fifth with a 1-under-par 71. By the way, Jason Jennings of Montrose won the tournament with a 5-under-par 67.

Max Lange of Lakewood fashioned at even par 72 to tie for medalist honors on Aug. 14 at the Sun Devil Invitational held at Saddle Rock Golf Course.

IN THEIR BUSINESS The Station sold A San Diego-based firm specializing in value-add real estate investments has purchased The Station, a 97-unit multifamily community in Littleton.

Pathfinder Partners purchased the complex at 2100 W. Berry Ave. for $20.7 million, according to a news release.

The seller was not disclosed.

Built in 1983, The Station offers 17 studio, 44 one-bedroom and 36 twobedroom apartment homes.

The community was an appealing buy with value-add opportunities, Lorne Polger, senior managing director at Pathfinder Partners, said in the release.

The community is located in a strong submarket, Polger said in the release.

“The Station is within close proximity to historic downtown Littleton, with its trendy coffee shops, wine bars, microbreweries, restaurants, retail shops, and walking/biking trails and is also just three blocks from the Littleton downtown light-rail

station, which provides easy travel to and from the Broncos Stadium and downtown Denver,” Polger said in the release. “Additionally, connecting lines provide access to Denver International Airport, University of Colorado and the Denver Tech Center, among other places in the metro area.”
