‘It’s like a family — I kid you not’ For decades, Cherry Knolls neighborhood has come together around pool

Just off the sprawling East Arapahoe Road, the Cherry Knolls pool is only a few seconds’ drive away from Centennial’s main thoroughfare. But behind the twisting streets and tall treetops, it’s the heart of a neighborhood, where people gather and carry on connections that cross generations.

“I can go down here and tell you almost everyone’s name. I know them from being here. You make friendships — real, strong friendships,” said Luke Ouellette, an involved member of the Cherry Knolls neighborhood.

Like many people who frequent the pool, he’s laid down roots that crisscross others: His in-laws are close friends with the parents of another man who grew up in the neighborhood — just like Ouellette’s wife did.

Those are the kinds of bonds Ouellette can rattle off about people at “family night” at Cherry Knolls pool, a gathering that can bring huge crowds to the pool at 3601 E. Costilla Place on Thursday evenings.

“It’s swimming, a meal, volleyball, families catching up,” Ouellette, 39,

with money raised by Cherry Knolls residents.

The pool opened in the 1960s, said Chad Naughton, a 47-year-old neighborhood resident. And when it faced a possible bulldozing, a group from the neighborhood came together to buy it before it could be razed in the early 1980s, according to the Cherry Knolls Swim Club Board.

That spirit of connection to the pool continues today, as neighbors hold family nights to bring people together and raise money for the operation and maintenance of the pool, which is run by the swim club board. The club includes as many as 275 active members at any one time.

The neighborhood also comes together around its youth summer swim team, the Cherry Knolls Neptunes, which serves kids ages 5 to 18 who can swim at least one lap unassisted.

The team is open to people outside the neighborhood, but they have to be members of the pool, said Ouellette, adding that people in that community include faces from areas like Parker and Littleton. The team competes in a local network against other neighborhoods, Ouellette said.

As a group independent of a homeowners association, the swim club board puts on many events, such as a Fourth of July barbecue, a derby watch party and more. Conrad Steller, who grew up in the neighborhood, started The Steller Group Real Estate and held a customer appreciation night — a pool party with entertainment and food — at the Cherry Knolls pool in late July.

“What this pool is about is community — bringing back that `20s and `30s neighborhood you used to have. You used to know your butcher, your dentist,” Ouellette said, adding that people don’t know their all their neighbors anymore. Cherry Knolls neighbors look out for and take care of each other, he added. Ouellette is the “co-social chair” on the swim club board.

For other neighborhoods that might want to start the same kind of deep community bonds, Ouellette said: “It’s going to sound cheesy, but it just takes people wanting to care and wanting to be part of something bigger than themselves.”

Katie Hess, the other co-social chair, noted that where she grew up in California didn’t have that kind of atmosphere.

“It’s like a family — I kid you not,” Hess said. “We always joke around and say we moved into an anomaly. I can rely on anyone in this neighborhood.”

5 things to know: Back to school in Cherry Creek District offers new learning opportunities, adjusts for full-day kindergarten

I

t’s a time of expansion in the Cherry Creek School District, and kids from kindergarten to high school will see new opportunities in the 2019-20 school year.

From new learning spaces for younger students to a whole new career-technical education campus for high-schoolers, there’s a lot to take in this fall.

Here’s a look at what’s new, along with important dates to know for the school year, which starts Aug. 12.

Innovation Campus, new online school High school students across the district can now immerse themselves in studies for in-demand career fields and earn college credits and industry certifications at the new Cherry Creek Innovation Campus.

Information technology and STEAM — science, technology, engineering, art and math — are covered, of course, along with six other pathways: advanced manufacturing, business services, health and wellness, hospitality and tourism, infrastructure engineering — or building trades — and transportation. Within those areas are more specific studies, such as automotive tech or virtual reality.

District high school students also now have the option to attend Cherry Creek Elevation, the district’s new online high school. Elevation gives students a personalized, rigorous and flexible educational option, said Abbe Smith, district spokesperson.

Cherry Creek district offered some online learning before, but expanding into a full-blown online school allows it to offer more courses to more students and allows kids to be full-time online students.

Space to tinker Innovation Spaces — designed to spark curiosity, critical thinking and collaboration — are entering their second year, or

will soon open, at all elementary and middle schools in the district.

Each of the Innovation Spaces is unique, designed to meet each school’s needs based partly on input from each school’s Site Advisory Team. Those are groups made up largely of students, parents, teachers and administrators.

Some Innovation Spaces opened in August 2018, while spaces at other elementary and middle schools have been completed or will be completed shortly.

Diversity on the mind As part of the district’s effort to shape policy to be mindful of diverse student groups, students from diverse backgrounds at all district high schools met last year to talk about their experiences.

“We will continue to find ways to include student voice and perspectives in district conversations,” Smith said.

It’s still in the works as to when initiatives are expected to be proposed based on ideas in those meetings, Smith said. The district is still compiling the findings and working on recommendations.

All kindergarten, all day The Colorado Legislature recently approved full-day kindergarten to begin this school year, and the Cherry Creek district has made moves to adjust.

The district will now offer full-day kindergarten, rather than half-day kindergarten and kindergarten enrichment, and there will be no cost to families.

Kindergarten enrichment was offered at 35 elementary schools last year and provided child care for the half-day that kindergartners were not in school, Smith said.

Children who are already registered for kindergarten enrichment will automatically be enrolled in full-day kindergarten.

5 things to know: LPS students head back to school Full-day kindergarten, bond projects and elections on the horizon

rap up that back-to-school shopping, because classes start at Littleton Public Schools on Aug. 16. Here are five things to know before the first bell rings.

Full-day kindergarten begins Kindergartners across the district will have access to tuitionfree full-day kindergarten this fall, after the Colorado Legislature passed House Bill 19-1262 this spring.

LPS previously offered tuition-free full-day kindergarten at five schools, but new state funding expands the program across the district.

Research suggests kids who attend full-day kindergarten develop better academic and social skills, according to an LPS news release.

“Full-day kindergarten for all students has been a priority for LPS elementary principals for many years,” said Kathleen Ambron, the district’s director of elementary education. “A full-day program allows us to really get to know our youngest learners and meet the individual needs of students.”

New athletic facilities ready for play Student athletes will find updated facilities at several schools, part of a sweeping $298 million bond approved by voters last fall that will see changes across the district.

Arapahoe High School, Heritage High School and Euclid Middle School all got one artificial turf field this summer, which district officials say will be safer and more durable. Each high school will have one lighted practice field.

Powell and Goddard middle schools will get artificial turf fields this fall, and more will be added at the district’s high schools and middle schools will be added in coming summers.

Newton Middle School will also get a junior stadium, but construction on that facility won’t start until summer of 2020.

The improved athletic facilities are welcome changes, said Terry Davis, the district’s director of operations, as athletics are growing in popularity.

“When these buildings were built, we didn’t have lacrosse or girl’s soccer,” Davis said. “Now, we don’t just have more sports, but we have more levels in each sport.”

Programs are being moved ahead of construction This part gets confusing, so follow along carefully: As part of the 2018 bond, Ames Elementary, which has housed a preschool and TLC Meals on Wheels for the past 10 years, will be torn down and rebuilt,

at which point it will become an elementary school. The demolition is currently underway in phases, with TLC expected to move out just before Christmas.

The preschool previously housed at Ames has been moved to Highland Elementary, where it will occupy a new temporary wing alongside elementary students, until Highland becomes solely an early childhood education center.

That won’t happen until Franklin Elementary is replaced with a new building, which isn’t expected to happen until 2021 or 2022, though this year will be status quo for Highland students.

Newton Middle School will also get a new facility and see its current building torn down, but construction won’t start until next summer.

Lots more bond work being done There’s lots more action on the 2018 bond going on around the district. A sampling: Projects to improve access for students with disabilities are ongoing districtwide, with Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant restrooms going in at Centennial Academy, Peabody Elementary and Littleton High School.

ADA-compliant ramps are being added at numerous schools.

Littleton Preparatory Academy is getting a new roof.

Four schools are getting kitchen upgrades.

Arapahoe High School’s pool is getting a new HVAC system.

Assessments are ongoing at the Ralph Schomp dealership beside Littleton High School, which is slated to become a Career and Technology Education center in coming years.

Studies and training are underway for planned new furniture and fixtures that will encourage collaborative classroom instruction.

Elections are coming Two seats are up for grabs on Littleton Public Schools’ fiveseat board of education this fall.

Board secretary Robert Reichardt will seek reelection, but assistant secretary Jim Stephens will not, as his family plans to move out-of-state, according to an LPS news release.

In addition to Reichardt, three other candidates have declared: Christine Copp, Lindley McCrary and Jessica Roe. As of the Aug. 1 campaign contribution filing deadline, neither Copp nor McCrary had reported any donations.

Reichardt reported campaign contributions of $1,500, while Jessica Roe — who made headlines last spring as the face of a largely anonymous coalition alleging a toxic culture at Arapahoe High School — reported contributions of nearly $3,500, with the vast majority coming out of her own pocket.

The last LPS board election, in 2017, was canceled due to a lack of candidates.

Innovation Campus takes students beyond high school New career-technical facility is springboard for industry skills

eave the literary analyses of Shakespeare at home — Cherry Creek School District’s new campus lets students practice exactly what they may end up doing in the real world.

“This is just unbelievable because the machines they have here, it’s nothing like they have at Grandview,” said Robert Paulson, 17, standing in an advanced manufacturing room at the Cherry Creek Innovation Campus.

Starting this school year, students like Paulson who attend the Cherry Creek district’s high schools will have more room to zero in on an industry skill they’re passionate about. The new, 117,000-square-foot campus opens Aug. 12, offering many areas of study — from construction management to cooking, from airplane maintenance to cybersecurity.

“I haven’t really always known what I wanted to do, but this is a great place to help make up your mind with what you want to do with the future,” Paulson said.

Designed for both the collegebound and students looking to go straight to the workforce, the Innovation Campus will offer college credit and industry-recognized certifications.

And even the building itself is designed in the spirit of helping kids discover their passions, said Jocelyn Nguyen-Reed, an information technology teacher at the campus.

“How does what we believe about education influence the architecture and furniture?” Nguyen-Reed said. There’s “a lot of glass (windows), where students can see what others are doing. We don’t just want students who know what they want to do.”

Nguyen-Reed’s IT department is just one of seven “pathways” students can immerse themselves in: Also among them are advanced manufacturing, business services, health and wellness, hospitality and tourism, infrastructure engineering — or building trades — and transportation. Within those areas are more specific studies, such as automotive tech or virtual reality.

The ethos of the campus speaks to a firm belief of Cherry Creek Superintendent Scott Siegfried: Not every kid has to attend college to be successful.

In the aviation maintenance area of study, instructor David Williamson said local businesses could start new hires in the industry at as much as $50,000 per year. The district says the campus boasts the only Federal Aviation Administration-certified high school program in Colorado.

The 2016 Cherry Creek district bond paid for the campus, located at 8000 S. Chambers Road near East Broncos Parkway. It sits in the Dove Valley area of unincorporated Arapahoe County, which includes much undeveloped land just outside central Centennial.

The Cherry Creek district’s high schools will continue to host a wide range of career-technical education programs, a pamphlet for the campus says. The Innovation Campus will enhance that programming and offer more advanced and sophisticated opportunities, it adds.

Centennial weighs RV, car parking rules Recreational vehicle talks go back at least a decade, will continue this year

The sight of a large trailer or other recreational vehicle may seem benign, but it’s the subject of a regulatory balancing act that Centennial has grappled with for years.

“The intrusion of the RV into the front yard has a negative connotation for neighborhoods: the aesthetic value of an RV may be interpreted to be less than a landscaped and orderly front yard,” a city staff report from 2010 read.

That report also notes that RVs can impede pedestrians’ paths on sidewalks, cast shadows that increase ice buildup during winter and block visibility from nearby driveways and streets.

Nine years later, the city hasn’t put the issue to rest, still considering whether to restrict where RVs and similar vehicles can be parked on private property. City council hasn’t agreed on the right move, but some councilmembers supported banning the parking of RVs in front of or on the side of homes, allowing them in rear yards but only if they aren’t visible from the street. That could include campers, RVs, boats and trailers.

Cummins hasn’t heard much backlash to the idea of new regulations, she said. Cummins, who lives in west Centennial, said seeing RVs and trailers is “more rare than common” in Centennial.

The council has also discussed residential parking rules for cars, too.

At the April meeting, council agreed it should limit parking in front yards to some percentage of front yard area, which would differ with lot size and type; limit side and rear yard parking; and require parking to be located on concrete, asphalt or pavers. It agreed it shouldn’t limit the number of vehicles per home or restrict where they can be parked on the street. A formal vote has yet to be taken, though.

Other rules considered for cars on residential streets included restricting the time vehicles may be parked without being driven to up to 14 days. That’s a step to manage access to parking and mitigate “the visual and aesthetic impact of stationary long-term storage of vehicles,” the June report said. Any 14-day period could need to follow a seven-day period where the car was not on the street. In April, council didn’t reach agreement on what time limit to set.

Fraudulent filing demands continue, state warns STAFF REPORT

The Colorado Secretary of State’s Office is again alerting small business owners about more potentially misleading notices requesting an extra fee for a third party to file business documents.

According to a news release, the Secretary of State’s Office has continued to receive reports about third parties sending additional deceptive and misleading solicitations to Colorado businesses. The Colorado secretary of state maintains an easy-to-use online filing system for businesses. Use of a third party to complete filings with the secretary of state is not required.

The newest versions of these solicitations offer to obtain a “Certificate of Good Standing” or a “Certificate of Existence” from the Secretary of State’s Office for a fee. Any business can download a Certificate of Good Standing for free from the secretary of state’s website at www.sos.state. co.us. In addition, the office does not offer anything called a Certificate of Existence.

Another misleading solicitation offers to file a “Statement Curing Delinquency” with the office to bring a business back into good standing.

In addition to the required state filing

fee, the form requires payment of a processing fee.

These misleading solicitations may appear similar to a government form, cite specific Colorado statutes and require a fee. They might contain your business entity’s actual business ID number and date of formation, as reflected in the secretary of state’s business records; contain a customer ID number that does not match a number given to you by a state or federal agency; contain a warning to make sure that the form’s instructions are followed exactly when completing the form; or contain a due date for your response.

The Colorado Secretary of State’s Office does not send these solicitations, nor does it mail out business filing forms. Compliance with these notices is not required, the release said.

All business filings are filed online.

Business owners can find instructions to directly file business forms at www. sos.state.co.us under the Business Organizations heading.

Swedish Medical Center plans a women’s wellness event that features massages, facials and presentations on subjects relating to women’s health.

“Too often women are busy caring for others; this event provides us with an important reminder to take time to focus on ourselves and our health,” Christina Merritt, administrative director of women’s services at Swedish Medical Center, said in a news release.

“We want to encourage and inspire women through providing access to critical health conversations and wellness screenings in a fun and engaging way.”

The season is still around the corner, but some players are in mid-season shenanigan form.

One of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Craig Marshall Jalen Ramsey, arrived at camp in Smith an armored car, surrounded by phony bank money bags.

When the rear doors were opened, he was introduced by comedian Ha Ha Davis, who said, “It’s time to get this money, money.”

Ramsey is stuck with a $13.7 million contract for 2019, and he feels like he deserves much more.

Out west, Antonio Brown, a member of the Oakland Raiders, arrived to training camp in a hot air balloon.

These are exactly the kind of guys I’d like to have on my team. If I were organizing a vaudeville show in Benson.

Turn high-speed thinking into highly motivated action

here is certainly no shortage of ideas these days. As a matter of fact, we typically come up with more ideas than we really need. And the more ideas we generate, the more excited we get about putting them into practice.

What I am seeing more and more of is some very high-speed thinking.

The problem is that I am also seeing some WINNING low functioning and less motivated doing. WORDS Brainstorming is one of my very favorite exercises to participate in. Sometimes I find myself working through ideas on my own and challenging myself to come up with as many possible new Michael Norton ideas or solutions as possible. However, what I enjoy more is being part of a group and having others share their ideas and what they are thinking. In most cases their contributions and line of thinking was something totally different than my own. And usually much smarter.

The problem is that our thinking never stops, there is always one more idea or new approach we want to think

through. One more shiny object to chase. This in turn creates the bigger problem, the “doing” actually does stop. As I explored this further, I found out some very interesting information.

As much as some people love innovative thinking and creativity, coming up with vision and strategy, they don’t like to do the work that it takes to execute or implement the idea. Unless of course, it was their own idea.

The other thing people shared with me was that in many cases of a team meeting or brainstorming session, the meeting ended with no clearly defined next steps or assigned ownership. They may have had a powerful thought-provoking session, but when it was over, the excitement that was generated in the room evaporated with everyone’s exit. Or it was assumed that someone would simply take ownership.

So how do we turn high speed thinking into highly motivated action? The answer isn’t found in the “Just do it” slogan. The answer is found in just two “doing” words, prioritization and accountability. As much as I enjoy spending time on an airplane filling up a page or two of ideas and strategy,

I always go back and prioritize everything on the pages. The next step is to put dates, names of team members or people who can help, desired outcomes, and most importantly I write down an immediate next step.

Having a very clearly defined next step forces prioritization and accountability. Too often we look for the endgame or result. We hit the fastforward button and forget that in order to achieve our desired results, we must first know and take that very first step, that immediate next step. And yes, having a plan beyond our immediate next step is super important, however, if we are talking about turning ourselves or our teams from high-speed thinkers driven by highly motivated action, we must start with the first action step.

Keep the ideas coming, creativity drives our innovation and growth.

Go-kart racing offers a rush around Denver metro area

ust off an inconspicuous industrial side street, kids as young as 5 and adults as old as 80 don helmets, strap on seatbelts and zip around like something out of a video game.

They’re racing go-karts at K1 Speed in Highlands Ranch, one of a handful of places in the Denver metro area where impassioned drivers, beginners and fun-seeking groups can test their skills on winding tracks.

“Karting is definitely a little different than your regular pool day,” said Nichole Sarno, K1’s assistant manager.

Christian Obrecht, a 47-year-old from Denver, built up a love for karting near Bandimere Speedway, a professional drag-racing track just west of Lakewood. And although Obrecht wasn’t racing full-sized cars, renting karts proved to be a lasting passion for him — eventually, he bought his own wheels.

“I started up just from actually watching a commercial one time, and I was like, ‘Oh, man, I kind of want to get into this,” Obrecht said.

“I didn’t even know how to get the thing off my truck. I was standing there — it was like my first day of school,” Obrecht said. “This guy was just walking by like, ‘Do you need help?’ Those are the guys I hang out with now to this day with kart racing.”

Obrecht now hopes to get his young son into racing, too, which won’t

be difficult with the metro area’s options. Action Karting, an outdoor track at the Bandimere Speedway near Highway C-470, touts itself as kid-friendly and an ideal place for first dates. K1 in Highlands Ranch sees events such as young girls’ birthday celebrations and bachelorette parties, Sarno said.

Male drivers are a bit more common than females at K1, Sarno said, but they’re not far off in numbers.

“Our fastest is a 17-year-old guy; the next fastest is a 13-year-old girl,” said Sarno, referring to K1’s speed records.

Adult karts can reach about 45 mph, and manual — or “shifter” — karts can reach about 55 mph, while junior karts for kids run about 25 to 30 mph, Sarno said. And on tracks that allow personal, non-rental karts, Obrecht’s vehicle can reach about 100 mph.

Despite the high-energy atmosphere of karting, what Obrecht enjoys most is the mental clarity the repetition of the turns can bring.

“It’s all you’re thinking about when you’re doing it,” Obrecht said. “You’ll have a favorite turn, a not-so-favorite turn … My wife makes fun of me because she says, ‘You’re just going in a circle,’ but that alone clears your mind.”

Sarno’s favorite part is “the thrill of it” — as an employee at K1, she often drives the karts — but watching others speed around is satisfying, too.

“The excitement they get from it — a little girl beat her brother, a kid beat his dad,” Sarno said. “Watching

Items collected will benefit elementary in Commerce City STAFF REPORT

Denver-area Allstate agency offices are asking residents to help students and teachers start the year off right by donating school supplies to benefit Kemp Elementary School in Commerce City.

The supply drive runs through Aug. 16. The most needed items are No. 2 pencils, disinfecting wipes, notebook paper, highlighters and backpacks.

New supplies can be dropped off at Allstate offices in Parker (10290 S. Progress Way, Ste. 204), Littleton (9032 W. Ken Caryl Ave., Ste. A-7B), Parker (11007 S. Each year, public school teachers spend nearly $500 of their own wages on supplies for their classrooms, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

In honor of the Allstate agency owners’ volunteer efforts, the participating schools and youth groups will receive Allstate Foundation Helping Hands Grants to continue to help young people achieve success in and out of the classroom.

All Colorado Art Exhibit back for 36th year Littleton show held in intimate Depot Art Gallery

ust inside the front door of the Depot Art Gallery is a colorful painting by Desmond O’Hagan, who was 2019 juror for the All Colorado Art Exhibit, now in its 36th year. Looking at its fine details sets the tone for a visitor to this really pleasing — and varied — exhibit.

It was open to all Coloradans and shows many ways of experiencing one’s world.

Any exhibit at this intimate gallery is limited in the size of works shown, but it draws a number of fine-tuned and, in some cases, beautifully crafted smaller works that are great to contemplate and just might be the very thing to fit in a visitor’s home. It’s especially hard not to touch some of these works, such as Eileen Flanigan’s intricately etched brass “Kaleidoscope” — but please don’t!!!

O’Hagan awarded ribbons to artists at an Aug. 2 reception at the historic depot gallery and the show will continue through Aug. 24.

Best in show went to Joann Lavender’s oil painting, “Morning Sun on Pike’s Peak,” and it’s just one of several really skillful landscapes in

the show. It summons up memories of those gorgeous early-in-the-day scenes we Coloradans treasure from past excursions. The ones that just make one stop and stare!

Up a few steps on the platform is the quirky first-place painting, “Neon Nuclear Duck,” by Jeff Velarde. What is the story here? One would enjoy a statement from the artist, although mostly, I’d prefer not to have a lot to read! A group of photographs includes Raj Manickam’s second-place photograph, “Dance and Drama,” portraying a lovely young dancer performing at the edge of a crowd. One can almost

hear the accompanying music. Mary Holms’ mixed media painting, “Lawn Chairs,” is on a different track, as an example of Abstract Expressionism that won third place.

O’Hagan also awarded several honorable mentions: Andrew Woodward’s acrylic painting, “Flatiron Clouds”; Scott DeWeese’s “Red Vessel # 14”; and Jeanne Trueax’s pen and ink drawing, “Rocky Hillside.”

DeWeese’s intricately carved impressions of Native American basketry are an example of especially fine craftsmanship, as well as sensitive artistry. I was happy to see that the

juror honored his work.

And across the middle room from those pieces is a pair of assemblage pieces that are a send-up of the trophy heads one sees around: Artist Susan Wechsler demonstrates really intricate craftsmanship in “Indy Blue Eyes,” a deer, and “Zelda,” a zebra. Be sure to stop and stare for a few moments.

Continue to the back room and enjoy ceramic artist Carol Broere’s stunning green necklace to the right. (What could I wear with that?) Continue across the room to a square fabric piece showing a napping dog — “Vigil.” While I’ve never been a quilter, I was struck by the intricacy of this piece — look closely at the stitching.

Also in the back room is work by Artist of the Month Cele Bergstrom, who was the Littleton Fine Arts Guild member on hosting duty, along with member Forest Plesko, who declared this was the best exhibit he’d seen there. Note that you are invited to vote for a People’s Choice Award while at the Depot.

Denver Zoo welcomes African lion cub Dad Tobias’ arrival to Predator Ridge in 2018 proves fruitful for species survival plan STAFF REPORT

The birth of an African lion cub this summer has given Denver Zoo a lot to roar about.

The cub, whose sex has yet to be determined, was born July 25 to mom Neliah, 7, and dad Tobias, 3, according to a news release. Animal care staffers say mom and cub are both healthy and active, and are bonding behind the scenes in Benson Predator Ridge.

Although the cub won’t make his or her public debut until later this summer, guests can still catch a glimpse of Neliah and her cub on the TV screens during the daily 2 p.m. “Pahali Ya Simba” lion demonstration at Predator Ridge, the release said.

“This is Neliah’s second time around as a mom, so we were confident she’d show all the correct behaviors with her new cub,” assistant curator of predators Matt Lenyo said in the release. “She immediately started grooming and nursing the cub, which is exactly what we hoped she would do.”

tions of lions within Association of Zoos and Aquariums institutions, and is managed by Denver Zoo’s vice president for animal care, Hollie Colahan.

The species survival plan recommended that Tobias be moved to

Denver Zoo in 2018 as a potential mate for Neliah and her daughter, Kamara, and was introduced to the three lions in the zoo’s female pride.

“Tobias hasn’t fathered any cubs previously, which makes his genetics important to the AZA lion population,” said Colahan, who also serves as the program leader for the African Lion SAFE (Saving Animals from Extinction) Program. “The fact that he’s already successfully mated with one of our females speaks to the work our lion team put in to make Tobias feel comfortable in his new home in such a short period of time.”

Neliah and the cub will stay behind the scenes for at least one to two months to give them time to bond and gradually introduce the cub to the rest of the pride. They’ll primarily stay in their den box, which the animal care provides to mimic the space Neliah would seek out to give birth in the wild.

Neliah will still have access to other holding areas behind the scenes, but the addition of the den box gives her a sense of security for her and her cub.

In the meantime, footage of Neliah and the cub in their den box will be shown on the TV screens in the Pahali Ya Simba building in Benson Predator Ridge.

re you starting to enter the waters of finding a new job? Whether it’s because you are unhappy at your current position, or you realize you’ve grown and are ready to move up – the main thing to keep in mind is your resume needs to be updated.

A fresh resume, or even multiple drafts of a resume are good to have on hand.

Don’t be afraid to dust off the old version. A lot of the basic information still applies. It just needs to be updated to fit today’s job market, and maybe even split into a few versions if you are applying for multiple jobs.

Call for Nominations for Jefferson County Public Schools Jefferson County, Colorado The Board of Education of Jeffco Public Schools in the County of Jefferson, State of Colorado, calls for nominations of candidates for school directors to be placed on the ballot for the regular biennial school election to be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2019.

At this election, two directors will be elected representing director districts 3 and 4 for a term of office of four years. To be qualified, a candidate must have been a registered elector of the school district for at least 12 consecutive months prior to the election and a resident of the director district which will be represented. A person is ineligible to run for school director if he or she has been convicted of committing a sexual offense against a child.

A person who desires to be a candidate for school director shall file a written notice of intention to be a candidate and a nomination petition signed by at least 50 eligible electors who are registered electors for the regular biennial school election.

Nomination petitions may be obtained at the Board of Education office, Education Center, 1829 Denver West Dr., Bldg. 27, 4th floor. Office hours are 7:30 am to 5 pm, Monday-Friday. Completed petitions shall be submitted to Helen Neal, designated election official, at the Board of Education office no later than 4:30 pm on August 30, 2019.
