The summer gathering at Centennial Center Park featured local barbecue and several local breweries for beer-tasting. The July 13 event saw “honky-tonk” country music by the Denverbased Cowboy Dave Band and Lee & Co., who perform rockabilly and “old time rock ‘n’ roll,” according to their online bios.

‘Kilted Man’ sings history, heritage Celtic Nations Musical Journey held at local library

H

istory came in a brown leather kilt when Matthew Gurnsey took the stage at a Centennial seniors’ event, but it wasn’t without some mischievous humor.

“What’s the difference between roast beef and pea soup?” Gurnsey said at Smoky Hill Library, with a pause.

“Anyone can roast beef.”

In between singing songs, the 46-year-old entertainer opened the crowd up with unrelated puns and jokes, but his aim was sincere: spreading culture and understanding between different people.

Gurnsey took an audience of about 100 through the Celtic world via song, discussing history of the Ireland-Scotland area with lilting music he played himself. He offered a song from the perspective of the Picts, for example, a people who held their territory against invading Romans.

The music wasn’t all solemn, though — the July 16 audience engaged with Gurnsey in a sing-along he led, directing them to huff and puff and flap their elbows up and down.

It was all part of getting them familiar with a culture he’s spent time in,

having been to Orkney, Scotland, and playing traditional Celtic instruments.

He has toured internationally with a traditional Celtic band, according to his website, and performed in about 500 libraries across the United States over about two decades.

Performing for an older audience — this one included many from nearby senior living facilities — is particularly rewarding, Gurnsey said.

“I really enjoy when they know some of the older ballads,” said Gurnsey, adding that his performances can reach people who experience memory loss. “A caregiver will say, ‘They haven’t responded to anything … but they were singing along with your song.’”

In this day and age, he feels it’s “extremely relevant” to spread knowledge of different peoples — “not just this culture but all cultures,” he said.

“I feel like a major barrier between people is fear,” Gurnsey said. “Fear stems from the unknown.”

The event was put on as part of the Centennial Active Seniors events program by the Centennial Senior Commission, which advises the Centennial City Council on matters affecting seniors. Teen will see trial in vape-related shooting Kenneth Gallegos, 17, allegedly involved in Lloyd Chavez death

At a court hearing for a suspect in the May death of a Cherokee Trail High School student, two starkly different views on the case emerged.

The prosecution argued that hard evidence placed the teen at the scene of the shooting, and the defense said the case stands on nothing more than the shifting story of one witness, herself a suspect.

“The prosecution cannot solely rely on hearsay evidence,” said defense attorney Morgen Oswood, adding that her statements “are inconsistent at best.”

The court proceeding July 17 for Kenneth Alfonso Gallegos decided that the 17-year-old will face trial for his suspected involvement in the shooting of Lloyd Alvin Chavez, 18, during what was planned as a robbery of vaping products Chavez sold, according to testimony in Arapahoe

County District Court.

That testimony consisted only of the account by Niki Bales, an Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office investigator who filed the affidavit for Gallegos’ arrest.

The teenager’s defense attorneys argued that Bales’ reason for suspecting Gallegos was based on statements

by Juliana Alexis Serrano, 17, another of the four teens suspected of driving to Chavez’s home in east Centennial the night of May 8 in an incident that ended with Chavez’s death.

The other two suspects are Dominic Jarrod Stager — who is 17 or 18 based on sheriff ’s and court records — and 17-year-old Demarea Deshawn Mitchell. Serrano and Stager are students at Cherokee Trail, and Gallegos is a Grandview High School student who recently transferred from Cherokee Trail. Mitchell was identified in photos provided by a Cherokee Trail school resource officer.

The July 17 event was a preliminary hearing, where a court decides whether there is enough evidence to take the case to trial — it doesn’t decide whether a suspect is guilty.

Residents who live in the 18 th Judicial District are invited to apply for the 2019 fall citizens academy, a seven-week program that explores different parts of the criminal justice system.

Each class explores the roles of various members of the office and gives students an in-depth look at what happens on a case from the time of arrest through post-conviction. In addition, attendees will explore functions of specialized units such as the special victims unit, the economic crimes unit, the cold case unit, crime scene investigations, county court and juvenile justice.

Students also will learn the intricacies of a jury trial.

Meetings will take place from 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays from Sept. 11

to Oct. 23 at the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Arapahoe County office at 6450 S. Revere Parkway, Centennial.

Limited spaces are available.

Preference will be given to applicants who live in the 18th Judicial District and are first-time attendees. Participants must be at least 18 years old, complete an application and pass a criminal background. Members of the media and family of employees are welcome to apply.

The judicial district encompasses Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties.

Former Safeway sold; future of Albertsons space unclear Gyms, food halls, other uses may replace them, trends indicate

The depressing look of a bare storefront where a well-known logo once sat has become a common sight in the Denver metro suburbs, even amid a strong economy. And Centennial stores have been no exception.

At opposite ends of the city, two grocery stores have sat vacant for years.

One, a Safeway along East Smoky Hill Road, closed in September 2017. The other, an Albertsons right across from Arapahoe High School, closed in November 2016, with the Petco next door shuttering after.

They weren’t alone: The former U.S. Toy building near South Quebec Street and East County Line Road closed in recent years, now poised to become an Alfalfa’s Market after Centennial City Council approved a sales tax rebate for the project in June 2018.

That’s just a short walk away from a Safeway that closed in June 2015 — one of nine in the metro area announced to close at the time — which was taken

over by a VASA Fitness.

It’s all part of a trend for large brickand-mortar stores: other kinds of business rising in their place.

“Regional trends suggest that these spaces could be occupied by non-retail uses including private fitness (or) gyms, churches or seasonal stores. There is a growing national trend of food hall (and) marketplace concepts as well,” said Neil Marciniak, Centennial’s economic development manager.

The former Safeway at 20153 E. Smoky Hill Road was sold last month, while the Albertsons and Petco vacancies at 7450 and 7460 S. University Blvd., respectively, haven’t changed hands yet.

Here’s a look at what could change at these locations.

The players Denver-based JFRCO LLC owns the University Towne Center shopping development where the former Albertsons and Petco sit.

“I do not believe that JFRCO is prepared to announce anything at the present or share the various plans that are being discussed with regard to the Albertsons/Petco vacancies, but they are working on several options,” said Tami Lord, vice president for SRS Real Estate Partners, who works with JFRCO. The property is for lease only, according to SRS, and Albertsons recently

ended its lease, Marciniak said.

On June 5, Safeway Stores 46 Inc. sold the former Smoky Hill Safeway to VIG Safeway LLC, a business listed at the same address as Value Investment Group in Colorado Springs. It sold for $4 million, according to county clerk records.

What could replace stores?

While the former Albertsons future is unclear, the path forward for the Safeway is taking shape.

Value Investment Group has seen “a promising amount of interest from potential tenants, including two national fitness centers and a regional swim school,” the company said on its website. Two national quick-service restaurants have shown interest in other space on the property, the company added.

The property is “deed restricted,” meaning the conditions of its sale included that it can’t be used for a grocery store, pharmacy, alcohol sales, cigarette or smoke shop, or a convenience or dollar store. Those restrictions apply for 20 years, according to the deed.

“Grocery remains an option at University Towne Center,” Marciniak said.

But “King Soopers is located at this intersection, and they are the dominant grocery brand in metro Denver with

over one-third of the grocery market share.”

What is the city’s role?

The City of Centennial has been in contact with businesses regarding what could occupy the former Albertsons and Safeway, including food hall operators, Marciniak said. Stanley Marketplace in northwest Aurora, which houses many food providers in one place, is an example of that type of outlet.

The city can consider tax incentives for “extraordinary” projects that significantly enhance the community, Marciniak said.

Through its zoning code and other tools like incentives, the city can attempt to help create an attractive environment to developers and desirable retailers, Marciniak said. But who ends up in a space largely depends on owners and market demand.

“As much as the community may want the city to, we’re not able to make a certain retailer go into a vacant space or make a shopping center owner lease (or) sell to certain businesses,” Marciniak said.

The city is not considering rezonings or planned unit developments — which allow for a mix of possible types of properties where a city’s normal zoning wouldn’t — for those locations, Marciniak said.

Judge Ben Leutwyler ruled the evidence was sufficient for Gallegos’ three charges — first-degree felony murder, aggravated robbery and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery — to continue to trial.

Leutwyler ordered Gallegos to be held without bond, and a hearing on Oct. 24 will decide a request for him to be transferred to juvenile court. The other three suspects were charged with the same crimes as Gallegos, according to the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

All four are currently being prosecuted as adults rather than juveniles, according to the DA’s office. The other three also have hearings in the fall for requests to transfer to juvenile court and are awaiting their preliminary hearings in the coming months.

Shooting over ‘juice’ Data from Serrano’s phone places her at the scene between 9:18 and 9:27 p.m., Christopher Gallo, chief deputy 18th Judicial District attorney, told the court, and the shooting occurred about 9:25 p.m., according to the investigation. Serrano initially refused to let an investigator look through her phone, but a warrant was later acquired, according to testimony.

The prosecution also pointed out that Gallegos connected to Serrano’s Wi-Fi hotspot signal after the shooting and that Stager’s phone was tied to her hotspot at the time of the shooting

and shortly after.

According to the affidavit, here’s how the incident unfolded: Chavez had sold vape products in transactions arranged over Snapchat.

The four suspects intended to steal Chavez’s “juice” in a plan that began a day or two before he was shot, Serrano told an investigator.

The four suspects pulled up to Chavez’s home near East Smoky Hill Road and South Picadilly Street, where he walked up to a window of the car and received cash from Serrano. He walked away without giving them the product, Serrano said, and Mitchell got out of the car and questioned Chavez about it.

Chavez threw Mitchell onto the lawn, according to Serrano’s account, and that’s when he was shot. Vape products were later found on Chavez’s lawn and in his room.

The four suspects sped away and were in shock because they didn’t intend to shoot Chavez but, rather, threaten him with the gun if he didn’t give them the product, according to Serrano’s account.

Gallegos believed himself to be addicted to JUUL pods, a type of vape product, according to his parents.

‘All over the place’ Before Chavez died during surgery at the hospital, he told a nurse and a sheriff ’s deputy that “Kenny” shot him and that the shooter was a junior at Cherokee Trail, according to authorities. Serrano said it was Mitchell who shot Chavez.

The defense highlighted that a deputy said Chavez had told medical

staff someone had broken into his house and that a classmate was the culprit, and that information was not told to the deputy when he spoke to Chavez, according to the investigation.

Attorneys also noted that Cherokee Trail has three students named Kenneth who aren’t Gallegos.

But the main defense argument was about the credibility of Serrano, who spoke to authorities multiple times.

She was “all over the place,” said Angela Brant, another defense attorney. Serrano said it was the other suspects’ plan to rob Chavez, then later said “technically yeah,” it was her plan, but that it was “not really” her plan from the beginning to not give Chavez the money, according to the affidavit. She added that it was another female friend of Gallegos who asked him to rob Chavez.

Investigators couldn’t get cell tower information on where Gallegos’ phone was during the shooting, the defense noted, but Serrano said someone gave Gallegos a “trap phone” — meant to

be untraceable — according to the affidavit.

Serrano said Gallegos wasn’t the shooter from the beginning, despite the changes in her story, and there’s no evidence he took anything of value, the defense pointed out.

The investigation hasn’t recovered a gun, and the prosecution did not present the deputy who spoke with Chavez, or the nurse who talked to Chavez, for testimony, the defense said.

But the prosecution argued that Serrano’s mother’s recollection placed her in the car that was spotted at the scene, and that the content of a letter Gallegos wrote to Serrano at the juvenile detention center where they’ve been held establishes his involvement.

The coroner’s autopsy determined Chavez died from a gunshot wound and that the bullet entered from front to back and downward, according to Bales’ testimony.

Serrano eventually said she didn’t actually see the gun in anyone’s hands but described it as a “smaller gun” and saw a laser on Chavez around the time he was shot, according to the affidavit.

ormer talk show host Dick Cavett said he saw Groucho Marx on the streets of New York, and told him he was a big fan.

Marx said, “If it gets any hotter, I’m going to need a big fan.”

After 22 years, my air conditioner up and died. I wasn’t thinking. I should have had it checked out in the spring.

Now look at me.

The chickens are laying hard-boiled eggs.

According to “The Old Farmer’s Almanac,” the Dog Days of summer began on July 3, and they will end on August 20. They are called the Dog Days because they coincide with the sunrise rising of the Dog Star, Sirius.

I had to take a number when my air conditioner quit, and my number still hasn’t been called yet.

Nonetheless, U.S. officials are systematically failing to protect asylum seekers and failing to care for children entering the U.S. News reports reveal horrendous conditions in detention centers, including children separated from their families, children denied basic hygiene services and children charged with caring for infants. As an early learning professional with more than 30 years of experience, I know that such neglect is traumatic and detrimental to children’s mental

health and well-being.

I thank Congressman Crow for regularly visiting the immigrant detention center in Aurora. I urge him to continue to stand up for children and to work with Sens. Bennet and Gardner and the full U.S. Congress and the Trump administration to ensure the well-being of these children.

Mixing business with friendship can work

ike me, you have probably heard this saying repeatedly, “Never mix business with friendship.”

You may have even had an experience that didn’t turn out so well when you tried to partner with a friend on a business endeavor or worked with a friend to help you do your taxes, provide you insurance, sell or buy your home, fix your plumbing, help you make an investment, or any number of other situations that went horribly sideways.

Let me ask this question, was it the friendship or was it the situation WINNING itself ? Was it the friendship or was it WORDS something else that went wrong? Did a third party have something to do with? Think about it for a moment.

And if you still believe it was your friend, perhaps we need to go back and define what friendship means or how we define our particular friendships.

Friends, especially close friends, deal with disagreements and conMichael Norton flicts throughout the friendship. But the friendship is so deep and trusted that if something goes wrong or sideways, they always know how to get beyond the specific incident or circumstance. In most cases anyway.

Over my career I have made tremendous friends. Clients who have become friends, and partners who have become friends. It has worked the other way as well, friends who have become clients and friends who have become partners. I have been hired by friends and I have hired friends. And, luckily for me it has almost always worked out well.

Arrests made in shooting that left boy dead

Englewood Police have announced that four male suspects have been arrested in connection with a July 14 shooting that left a 13-yearold boy dead and an 18-year-old man in critical condition.

Police said Jesus PerezMedrano, 19, was arrested on July 16 in Centennial.

Two 17-year-olds were arrested on July 17, one in Littleton and the other Perezin Englewood. Another Medrano 17-year-old was arrested on July 18 in Denver. Police said the four arrests mean there is no continuing danger to the public, while the case remains under investigation.

Some will say that one might make concessions for friends or treat them differently. Some may argue that it’s hard to talk about money or ask for money from a friend. And still others will stand behind this concept that a client cannot become a friend because you will never be willing to raise your price or ask for more money — the preference being to preserve the friendship rather than tell them that there has been a price increase.

So, here’s the difference, a friend is a friend at all times. A friend is someone who will tell you what you need to hear, not just what you want to hear. A friend is someone you can trust with any project that they are capable of doing.

A friend is someone who will stand by you when prices go up or down, when business is good or bad, and who is there for the wins and the losses.

It’s when we ask our friends to do something that we know is not in their sweet spot, not their strength, that’s when things go wrong. We set them up for failure. It’s when we don’t set proper expectations regarding performance, that’s another huge area where we often fall short and the friendship can be placed at risk.

Like every other kid, I looked for-

Bannock Street alley. The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office classified the death of the 13-year-old as a homicide.

An affidavit states that although the 18-year-old victim was wounded, he was alert and told responding police officers that he was walking down the alley when a vehicle occupied by several males pulled up behind him and the 13-year-old.

Footage from a security camera showed a white Chevrolet Impala following the two pedestrians into the alley, but the shooting ensued outside of the camera’s view. A resident’s security camera near the shooting caught a white Chevrolet traveling southbound on Acoma.

On July 15, the day after the shooting, a lieutenant with the Arapahoe County Sherriff ’s Office saw a vehicle that matched the description of the vehicle from the shooting. The lieutenant pulled over the vehicle in the 6500 You see, I would rather go into business with a true and trusted friend.

I have done so a few times and we are still friends today. I would rather hire a friend who has the experience, qualifications, and track record of success to do the job, who knows I will have their back, and who will always have mine. Am I afraid that one day the business relationship will end?

Maybe. Am I worried that it will also end the friendship? Never.

The next time you ask your friend to fix your car, sell your house, or go into business together, make sure you both define your friendship first. Then set proper expectations, putting trust and your friendship before any business, and always understand what happens should anything go wrong.

For me, I would always prefer doing business with a trusted friend.

If I can’t, then I look for the next most qualified person, business, or company to help me. How about you?

block of South Dayton Street, but the driver was Maria Medrano, the mother of Perez-Medrano, according to the affidavit. She said Perez-Medrano borrowed the vehicle on grounds of going to a gas station at noon on the day of the shooting, but didn’t return until around 5 p.m. that day. Perez-Medrano immediately left after dropping off the vehicle at Medrano’s home, according to the affidavit.

On July 16, police returned to Perez-Medrano’s residence, where they observed him entering another vehicle parked near the home. He was soon taken into custody, and he told investigators he had picked up unidentified friends on July 14. The affidavit says he told investigators that he and his friends discussed setting up a drug deal with an “easy target” and planned to rob the 13-year-old and the 18-year-old at gunpoint.

arrangments via cell phones and the Facebook Messenger app to purchase $250 worth of LSD from the 13-year-old and the 18-year-old, according to PerezMedrano’s statements in the affidavit.

Once the vehicle arrived for the alleged drug deal, an unknown person, who name is blacked out in the affidavit, exited the back seat of the vehicle.

When the 13-year-old then entered the back seat of Perez-Medrano’s vehicle, another unknown person pulled out a .45-caliber handgun and put it close to the 13-year-old’s chest, according to the affidavit.

The 13-year-old then grabbed the gun and got out of the vehicle, the document states.

The unknown person who had exited the vehicle upon arrival allegedly shot the 13-year-old through the vehicle’s glass window, and the 18-year-old also was shot by someone whose name was blacked out, according to the affidavit.

Jackie was born on May 20, 1946 in Denver, Colorado to her parents Jack McLellan and Marion Kavan.

Jackie is survived by husband James H. Benton, children: Dianna Freimuth (JJ Jensen), Joanna Evans (Wayne), and James D. Benton (Janelle), grandchildren: Andrew Freimuth (Jordyn), Devyn Evans, Peyton Evans, Taylor Wood, Madelyn Wood, J.C. Benton, Seth Benton, Fletcher Freimuth (great grandson) and sister Kathie Hagen (Darryl).

Jackie graduated from South High School, Denver.

She further went on to work for Mountain Bell, Dress Barn, as well as a Teacher Assistant for Cherry Creek Schools.

Jackie was full of unconditional love for family and friends. She will be missed. All the little things she did were big things. Such as the Easter egg hunt, pumpkin carving, changing decorations in the house each holiday plus always asking anybody if there was anything she could do for them, or if they wanted anything to eat or drink. She loved to watch old movies, baseball and the Rockies.

Renaissance Festival offers an Larkspur event that stretches back 43 years draws 200,000 people during annual run

hen Christopher Baker wanted to propose to his wife, Rosie, he knew exactly where to buy the ring.

Both he and Rosie attended the Colorado Renaissance Festival in their childhood and teenage years. They’ve continued the tradition into adulthood and now share it with their 3-year-old daughter, Athena — while wearing the engagement ring and wedding bands they bought from a festival craftsman.

The event is a special place to them, the Central City couple said, and buying their rings there added to the sentiment behind them. They also love the culture of fantasy and escapism created by the event.

On an early July afternoon, the couple sat at the festival wearing headto-toe costumes with clothes they’ve acquired from event vendors over the years, looking back on their time within the village walls.

“It’s the only place in the state where you can walk around and see knights rubbing shoulders with storm troopers,” Baker said.

Sarah Periat of Commerce City agreed. The festival creates a place for people to get away from their daily lives and enter what feels like another world. She and her family spend weeks creating costumes. She personally sewed the dress she wore to the festival on July 7, when she dressed as an elf.

“We come every year. We like to dress up,” she said. “I think it’s the fantasy. People like to get out of their element.”

The family-owned-and-operated event has been running for 43 years, mostly at its location outside Larkspur. Jim Paradise is vice president and director of marketing while his father, Jim Paradise Sr., is the owner.

Paradise said it’s festival-goers like Periat and Baker who help add to the event’s allure, People aren’t required to come in costume, and in fact just a small percentage do, Paradise estimated. But they blend in with hired entertainers and make the fantasy more authentic.

There’s much more that goes into making the festival a long-standing success, he said.

“I think what makes it so appealing and gives us the opportunity to have it running for 43 years is the uniqueness of the event itself,” Paradise said.

Rosie and Christopher Baker attended the Colorado Renaissance Festival on July 7 with their daughter, 3-year-old Athena.

The couple have attended for years and purchased their wedding bands at the festival. through the streets while families sip drinks and snack on turkey legs.

The permanent structures meant to resemble a 16th-century magical village are routinely remodeled, and the village as a whole was roughly one-third its current size at the event’s start years ago, Paradise said.

He believes the village in particular sets the festival apart from nearby, smaller Renaissance festivals.

“The difference and the advantage we have is we have created a very nice village for people to come out and really get away. We don’t have just tents

in a parking lot or tables set up in a field,” he said.

The event, which this year runs on Saturdays and Sundays from June 15 to Aug. 4, draws an average of 200,000 people annually and employs approximately 500 people.

For the Town of Larkspur, a community of slightly more than 200 people, that’s a big deal, said Mayor Marvin Cardenas.

“It brings us almost half a million dollars alone in sales tax revenue,” he said. “For years the town has been supported by the Colorado Renaissance Festival. They’re a huge economic impact to our community.”

Other revenue generators are limited in Larkspur, Cardenas said, although he expects pending projects like a campground and a travel center will boost the sales tax once the developments open.

In the meantime, Cardenas said, the renaissance festival continues to support the town financially, provides jobs for residents and nearby entertainment.

“It’s a huge benefit to the community. We’re so lucky to have them and

I hope they never go away,” Cardenas said.

The festival shop where Baker bought his wife’s engagement ring more than five years ago is still there.

Owner Da-oud Thompson, while standing under a sign reading “Wedding Bands,” said the Bakers are not the only couple to buy engagement rings there. He’s known families that came to him for two or three generations.

“That really feels good,” he said.

Thompson travels the country to sell at various festivals and has come to the Colorado Renaissance Festival for 35 years. It’s one of his favorite shows, he said.

“The people are interesting. They come dressed in crazy outfits,” he said. “I think we’re all devoted to making people smile and having fun.”

Denver Water proposes removal of lead pipes Plan will be submitted to EPA for approval in August

Denver Water is looking to tackle lead in consumer drinking water head-on — by removing all the lead pipes in its system.

The utility organization recently announced a new three-part plan to remove the pipes in its service area over the next 15 years. Jim Lochhead, the CEO and manager at Denver Water, said that in order to get ahead of health concerns with lead in the water, “the ultimate solution is just removing these lines altogether.”

The organization will present the plan to the Environmental Protection Agency in August, and expects a decision by the end of 2019. Lochhead estimates the plan will cost between $300 million and $500 million depending on how many lead pipes there are.

In addition to replacing an estimated 50,000 to 90,000 lead service lines, Denver Water will distribute water filters to customers who may have lead lines, so they can get lead out of their drinking water before their lines are replaced. The utility will also increase the pH levels from 7.8 to 8.8, in order to prevent lead from leaking into the water.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment asked Denver Water in March 2018 to begin the process of adding orthophosphate to its system by 2020. Similar to increased pH levels, orthophosphate creates a coating on the inside of pipes and reduces the likelihood of lead getting into water.

The utility organization estimated that there are between 50,000 to 90,000 lead service lines in their system.

COURTESY OF DENVER WATER said the state looked into putting the additive into the system after lead levels in Denver Water were too high in 2012. Falco added that several utilities in the state are already using orthophosphate.

“It showed that (Denver Water’s) current corrosion control that they use might not be optimized,” he said.

There are not dangerous levels of lead in the water currently. Denver Water collects tens of thousands of water samples annually, Locchead said. EPA rules require that action is taken if more than 10% of homes tested have lead levels above 15 parts per billion. The only time this happened in Denver Water was in 2012.

Since most of the lead lines are customer owned, Denver Water does not know which homes have lead and which do not — and many customers don’t either. Homes built before 1951 are the most likely to have lead pipes, as Denver Water began to allow galvanized and copper pipes in construction in 1949. Copper pipes continued to have lead solders to connect the pipes.

Lochhead said the utility would use this information, as well as testing and permitting data they have collected to help determine which houses need line replacements.

“It’s a number of different ways to kind of sleuth out where we think they’re going to be,” he said. “Over the course of 15 years, we’re hopeful that our methods for identifying these lines will continue to improve.”

Denver Water’s policy is to remove lead pipes when it comes across them.

“We would prefer to avoid adding new chemicals to our drinking water,” he said. “We like to produce a really good product.”

Its research indicated that while orthophosphate would reduce lead levels by 74%, it would take 60 years to do so.

The organization also had concerns about investing in adding the additive to its water, when other organizations such as the Metro Wastewater Reclamation District would have to later remove orthophosphate from its system in order to prevent it from going directly into waterways. Neighboring water utilities in Highlands Ranch and Parker in the south, and Adams County and Thornton in the north, connect to Denver Water’s service network. Those entities would also have to remove orthophosphate from their systems.

Dinosaur dig wraps up near C-470 and Santa Fe Researchers unearthed about a third of a triceratops at construction site

Picture the scene: a muggy afternoon, 66 million years ago, on a mucky river delta. Crocodiles and turtles crawl among flowers and ferns beneath towering sycamores. On the river bank, a 30-foot triceratops lies dead, partially sunken in the mud.

Fast-forward to 2019. The river delta, now beneath Highlands Ranch, has yielded the bones of the dinosaur, long since fossilized.

A volunteer crew from the Denver Museum of Nature & Science wrapped up the dino dig in mid-July, and said they recovered about a third of the ancient three-horned herbivore.

The fossils — including portions of the dinosaur’s skull, ribs, hips, shoulder blades and backbone — are available for public viewing through the window of the fossil preparation lab at the museum, said fossil preparator Salvador Bastien, who worked on the dig.

pened upon the fossils in May, Bastien said, and invited the museum to excavate them.

The bones were scattered and scrambled in an area stretching across 50 to 60 feet, Bastien said, suggesting they may have been moved by the river or scavengers after the dinosaur died and decomposed.

The fossils were buried in sandstone and mudstone, suggesting the animal died in a river channel, Bastien said, and the remainder of the bones probably long since wore away.

Initial research hasn’t suggested a cause of death, which is extremely dif-

ficult to determine, Bastien said.

Triceratops were among the most common types of dinosaurs in the Cretaceous Period, Bastien said, which ended with the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.

Though paleontologists are already well-acquainted with triceratops, “every fossil is rare, and each one has the potential to increase our understanding of ancient ecosystems and biology,” Bastien said.

Crews called it quits after finding no more fossils in a one-meter radius from those already recovered, Bastien said. It’s possible there are more

fossils to be found at the site, but “we don’t have X-ray vision.”

The fossils were brought to the museum wrapped in plaster and burlap, Bastien said. Next they’ll be painstakingly cleaned with hand tools like dental picks and toothbrushes.

Though the lab has many projects going right now, this one will be prioritized because of its interest to the community, Bastien said. It’s too soon to say if the bones will eventually be added to a public display, though they will become part of the museum’s collection.

Under Colorado law, Bastien said, fossils discovered on private land are the property of the landowner, so he’s thankful that Wind Crest decided to donate the fossils to the museum. He’s also thankful that construction crews realized what they found and bothered to tell the museum.

The discovery has been a joy for Wind Crest too, said Craig Erickson, the company’s executive director.

“The discovery and excavation of the Triceratops fossils on campus has been a thrilling experience for our residents and staff,” Erickson said in a news release. “It is our honor to donate these incredible artifacts to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science for further study. We are grateful to the museum’s expert staff and the team at Brinkmann Constructors for their partnership in preserving this important part of Colorado history and sharing it with the greater community.”

Bowling bash provides backpacks to students in need Broncos safety Will Parks, teammates to host fundraiser in August at Main Event
