Centennial considers camping ban on city property Amid homelessness concerns, city considers prohibiting living outdoors

As cities in the Denver metro area continue to grapple with visible homelessness on street corners, sidewalks and river banks, Centennial may soon approve a ban on camping on cityowned property.

City council passed the ordinance on a preliminary 7-0 vote — Councilmembers Ken Lucas and Ron Weidmann were absent — at its meeting June 17.

The council took the vote without discussing the proposal, green-lighting it together along with other matters.

A final vote on the ban will take place at the July 8 council meeting, where citizens can give input on the proposal during a public hearing.

“Recently, the city was confronted with small camps located in the city’s rights-of-way, which have drawn attention to the larger issue of camping on city-owned property,” a report by city staff read.

While Centennial has not seen “large encampments to-date,” the report said such camping “poses potential significant impacts to the citizens and to the city’s ability to reserve city property for its primary purposes.”

ELLIS ARNOLD The Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office was made aware of camps along East County Line Road between South Broadway and South Clarkson Street, the High Line Canal also between those two streets, and near East Dry Creek Road and South Colorado Boulevard.

Along County Line Road, a large buffer of grass-and-dirt path — with no sidewalk — sits between the street and neighborhood fences for several blocks in that area. Similarly, at Dry Creek Road and Colorado Boulevard, much land sits undeveloped near the street corners.

Reports of camping at those locations came in within the last month or so, said Glenn Thompson, public safety bureau chief for the sheriff ’s office. Centennial has seen a few reports of camping before from time to time, said Allison Wittern, city spokesperson.

“City council is considering this ordinance in an effort to be proactive should camping on city-owned property become more prevalent,” Wittern said.

Centennial’s proposal would ban camping on roads, sidewalks, trails, parks and city buildings or other city-owned property. The ordinance also mentions floodplains and drainageways, adding that “camping within such areas places persons at risk of harm” and “potentially impedes the flow of stormwater to the detriment of the general public.”

The ban would apply to property overseen by the city’s stormwater body, the Southeast Metro Stormwater Authority, which manages certain waterways in the city.

An advisory board tasked with fostering a greater understanding of the concerns and contributions of senior citizens in Centennial is looking to fill vacancies. Open to residents ages 60 and older, the Centennial Senior Commission also encourages greater senior participa-

tion in community issues.

Commission members serve for two years. Meetings are from 2 to 4 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month at the city’s public works facility, 7272 S. Eagle St., Centennial. Various subcommittees meet as needed and require additional time commitments.

Officials ramp up calls to replace jail, courthouse Voters could be asked to fund project for nearly $1 billion

A long-range planning committee consisting of 25 citizens, convened in May by county commissioners to study the proposal, is expected to issue a report with recommendations in August.

Inmate-on-inmate assaults are up 48% in the last three years, with a total of 86 in 2018, said Vince Line, the bureau chief of detention services for the Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office in a February interview. Inmate-onstaff assaults are up 118% in the same period, Line said, with 24 in 2018.

The jail, built in 1986 and located on South Potomac Street near Centennial Airport, was originally designed to house 386 inmates, Line said. Expansions brought the current maximum inmate capacity to 1,458 — thanks in large part to cells designed to house one inmate that now house three.

More than half of the jail’s inmates have not been convicted of a crime, Line said, with many awaiting hearings or trials or unable to afford bail.

Though the jail has four times the inmate capacity it was originally built for, its kitchen, laundry and infirmary are no bigger, with each stretched to the limit and unable to expand due to their location in the heart of the jail, Line said.

“We’re pushing our current jail facility to its limits,” said Arapahoe County Sheriff Tyler Brown in a virtual tour of the jail posted to Facebook on June 19. “The jail is crowded. Space is tight. “Around 90% of folks in custody will return to our community,” Line said.

“The more we can do to keep them from committing more crimes is better for them, better for the facility, and makes us safer as a community.”

Line recently had to turn down additional state funding earmarked for increased behavioral health services, he said, because the jail simply does not have the space for added progamming capacity.

“The best answer I can give,” Line said, “is we need more space and we need more resources.”

If you build it Rather than continue trying to retrofit the current facility, Line said, the county would be best served by building an all-new facility on 11 acres of vacant land the county owns immediately adjacent to the current facility.

Current plans call for the new jail to have a maximum inmate capacity of 1,612, Line said, an increase of 154 over the current facility. The facility would be designed for a 40-year lifespan before expansion became necessary, he said.

Though the increase may not sound like much, Line said, the difference

would be a reduction in overcrowded cells and more programming space.

The jail would be built to more easily allow for expansion of housing and other functions in coming decades if necessary.

Retrofitting the current facility would be enormously difficult, Line said, because much of the core infrastructure is worn out or inaccessible in subterranean tunnels that have filled with sediment, construction would require shutting down large sections of the jail at a time with few places to move inmates, and the jail’s hub-and-spoke layout means there’s effectively no room to expand core functions like the kitchen, booking area or infirmary.

“If we spend a considerable amount of money to reutilize the current facility, does it get us even 15 years into the future?” Line said.

The plan also calls for an eventual replacement of much of the adjacent courthouse and district attorney’s facilities as well, which county officials say are increasingly overcrowded and overbooked.

Paying the price Among the biggest hurdles to selling the public on the plan will be the price tag, Line said. Current plans estimate the cost of a new jail at

Dropped jaws, sing-song voices and improvised jokes introduced dozens of kids — and a few parents — to the antics of a local magician at Koelbel Library in Centennial.

“As much as I’m a magician, I am also an inventor,” Dennis Michael quipped about a stick-and-rope toy he used for a trick during the June 21 show.

Michael, who performs mostly in the Denver metro area, specializes in what he calls “improvisational comedy magic,” where “things just happen

and you go with it.” He led the crowd in making up words for a ukulele song, and a few kids took part in tricks with playing cards and other props.

Michael has performed magic for 29 years professionally.

There’s a saying in the industry that comedy magicians are either not very comical or not very magical, Michael said. But when he sees the “genuine look of shock and awe” on the audience’s faces, he knows he’s on the right track, he said.

“When I see that, I know I’m doing comedy and magic and not one or the other,” Michael said. “When I do both, I know I’m doing my job.”

The use of force when deputies fatally shot Allen Fanning, an 18-yearold who fled the scene of a reported domestic violence incident Nov. 15, was legally justified, the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office has determined.

Arapahoe County sheriff ’s deputies fired numerous rounds at Fanning, who aimed a gun at them, according to a June 11 report released by the DA’s office. Fanning likely did not fire any shots, it added.

“I conclude Arapahoe County Deputies Robert Knudson, Christopher Donovan and Robert Bratsch swere legally justified in their use of force to defend themselves and other officers from the threat posed by Mr. Fanning,” Vicki Klingensmith, chief deputy district attorney, wrote in the report.

They called for paramedics, saw Fanning moving slightly and performed measures to attempt to prevent him from dying. A loaded handgun was found on the floor near Fanning’s feet.

The deputies’ body cameras corroborate their account of the incident, the report said.

Twenty-two live 9 mm rounds were also collected from the street on the driver’s side of the suspect vehicle, according to the report. Fanning sustained 10 gunshot wounds. His toxicology results tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.

“Based on the evidence, it appears Mr. Fanning did not fire any rounds,” the report said.

Under Colorado law, law enforcement officers are justified in using deadly force when they reasonably believe it necessary to defend themselves or someone else from the use or imminent use of deadly force, the report said.

Summer rich in activities in Centennial Events in city include chalk art festival, laser-show concert STAFF REPORT

Centennial is back for another round of annual summer festivities, from beer tasting to a car show — and, of course, lots of live music.

The summer events season got underway with the June 14 Summer Kickoff Concert at Centennial Center Park, where The King Stan Band — a Colorado rhythm-andblues outfit — played before The Beverly Belles, a vocal trio inspired by vintage girl groups, followed with upbeat tunes and some patriotic numbers.

And there’s more where that came from. Here’s a rundown of this summer’s events in the city, and the Arapahoe County Fair. All events, aside from the fair and the Chalk Art Festival, take place at Centennial Center Park, 13050 E. Peakview Ave. Brews, barbecue at park Centennial’s fourth annual Brew-NQue will feature local barbecue and several local breweries for beer-tasting. The July 13 event will feature live “honky-tonk” country music by the Denver-based Cowboy Dave Band and

Colorado-based folk-alternative band Pandas and People, Arvadabased soul singer Hazel Miller and an Eagles tribute band, The Long Run, will pack the evening with music before a laser show ends the night.

Admission is free, but you must be 21 or older to participate in the beer-tasting, which requires $15 for a punch card and tasting mug. It includes 10 3-ounce sample tastings. The event runs from 3 to 7 p.m.

Mexican rodeo and more Just outside of Aurora’s far east region sits the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds, where the county fair takes place from July 25 to 28. A Mexican rodeo, or charreada, will celebrate cowboy pageantry with lively music, dancers, and horsemanship skills, according to a news release.

A butterfly festival will see 350 butterflies spanning three different species flutter around visitors, and food vendors and home-brewers — complete with beer samples, recipes, tips and tricks — also will be part of the fun.

And of course, a carnival, 4-H activities, woodworking, floriculture and horticulture will fill the four days.

Daily tickets to the fair are $10 online when purchased before July 25.

The Nacho Men, a Colorado-based, wide-ranging band, will perform. The artists tout a “high-energy interactive rock-and-roll show,” with a blend of dance music, costume changes, choreography and “side-splitting humor,” according to their website.

Several Cherry Creek School District summer markets will help families who use school food pantries or school backpack food programs get food for the summer.

“We know that many families rely on school food programs to help make ends meet and ensure their families have healthy meals during the school year,” Leslie Navarro-Walker, a Title 1 program assistant for Cherry Creek Schools, said in a news release. “Our summer markets will help fill that gap during the summer months.”

The summer markets will take place at Meadow Point Elementary, Horizon Community Middle School and Overland High School.

Families can stop by and pick up fresh fruits and vegetables and other perishable and non-perishable food items. Some of the items came from

food drives conducted by Dakota Valley and Rolling Hills elementary schools before summer break. Some were donated by Flatirons Community Church, and others, including fresh produce, will be delivered by “We Don’t Waste Colorado,” a nonprofit, food recovery organization that gathers excess food from venues, caterers and restaurants.

Meadow Point, Horizon and Overland are also hosting the district’s expanded summer lunch program.

Summer meals are available for free to students from any district who are 18 and younger. Adults can also purchase meals for just $4. Summer meals are available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekdays through July 26. The program will be closed on July 4 for the Independence Day holiday.

Cherry Creek school board vacancy to go to election Board will not appoint successor to David Willman, who resigned

After its school board president resigned following his use of a term he later apologized for as “racist” and “deeply offensive,” the Cherry Creek School District Board of Education announced it would not appoint a new member, instead allowing the November election to fill the seat.

“We had two exceptionally qualified candidates who both would serve the district well,” Karen Fisher, new school board president, said in a news release. “Therefore, the board opted to allow the democratic process to proceed by having our voters decide.”

If more time remained before the election, the board likely would have chosen to appoint someone, Fisher added in the release. Fisher, the former vice president, took over as president amid the vacancy.

Former board President David Willman resigned after he spoke at a district teacher awards banquet April 30, where he used the term “tar baby” when telling a story of a teacher he had in his youth whose last name was Tar, according to Abbe Smith, district spokeswoman.

Scot Kaye, president of the district’s teachers’ union, attended the banquet and has said Willman was referring to a favorite teacher from his youth.

Kaye doesn’t believe he meant it in a racial way.

But Willman stepped down with a May 3 letter, following a letter to district staff in which he wrote he was at first defensive and tried to explain why he used the term, but he later had a change of mind.

“I have since had time to reflect on my actions and to have conversations with people in my life, and I now understand that my words were hurtful and damaging,” Willman continued.

“I own my mistake and I apologize for it.”

The board interviewed two finalists who had applied to the open seat, Angela Green Garland and Charles “C.J.” Whelan. The body decided to refrain from appointing a new member during its June 6 meeting.

Finalists’ experience Garland is a nonprofit manager who has worked for Great Education Colorado, an entity that works to “stimulate adequate and equitable investment in all Colorado public schools, students and teachers,” according to its website. She has volunteered as a board member of the Cherry Creek School District Foundation — which gives grants and other support to district students and educators — and in other capacities in the district, ac-

cording to her resume.

She also is committee chair of the district’s Office of Inclusive Excellence, which serves as a community liaison to promote cultural understandings across different backgrounds in the district. Garland has four children who have been students in Cherry Creek schools.

Whelan, a former Centennial city councilmember, has lived in what’s now Centennial for more than three decades. He graduated from Smoky Hill High School and served on Centennial’s council in the city’s District 4, the area near that school.

He also is a former president of the Cunningham Fire Protection District, which oversaw fire service in the east Centennial area. Whelan, a business owner and telecommunications entrepreneur, has recently served as president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s alumni association.

In her application, Garland said if she were to be appointed, she’d run in the November election in a bid to continue to hold the seat. Whelan filed to run in the November election in May. Other seats The vacant seat is for District C, located in the south Aurora area, mostly north of East Smoky Hill Road.

The winner of the election will serve a four-year term.

Willman, who was elected to the board in 2011, was term-limited and would not have been able to run for

his seat again in November.

School board member Eric Parish announced he will not see re-election, citing desire to spend more time with his family. Parish, the board’s treasurer, was elected in 2015 to the seat in District A, which includes Cherry Hills Village and parts of Greenwood Village and Centennial, generally west of South Dayton Street.

Anne Egan, a parent who was honored as one of the district’s 2019 Exceptional Volunteers, announced she’ll run for the District A seat.

She has served on multiple schools’ parent-teacher community organizations, including as the president of Cherry Creek High School’s PTCO, according to her campaign Facebook page.

Board member and secretary Janice McDonald’s term also expires in November. She was elected in 2015 in District B, the southwest Aurora area.

McDonald filed to run for re-election in February and has kept up with campaign document deadlines with the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office since then.

The office’s records don’t show others having filed candidate documents so far.

As the election nears, candidate forums will allow competitors to offer details about their vision for the district and answer voters’ questions, according to the district news release.

Dates are anticipated for the fall, Smith said.

Affidavit: Teen says other STEM suspect threatened him Suspects used cocaine, set car on fire before attack, document says

Suspects in the STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting said they used cocaine, set a car on fire and broke into a safe holding guns with an ax in the hours leading up to the attack, according to a court document in the case released June 20.

The arrest affidavit in the case of Devon Erickson, 18, also shows he told investigators that his co-defendant in the murder case, Alec McKinney, 16, repeatedly threatened his life and forced him to assist in the shooting.

McKinney wanted to target specific students at the school, he told investigators.

The May 7 shooting left one student, Kendrick Castillo, dead and eight others wounded. Court records made available online before hearings last month showed each suspect faced 48 charges, including first-degree murder. They will each be back in court in the fall — Erickson in September and McKinney in November.

Formal charges against Erickson released June 20 include conspiracy

The affidavit highlights interviews with the suspects, both STEM students, from the day of the shooting.

Their accounts are similar, but vary on certain points. It says they used cocaine before the attack, targeted

specific students, stole their guns from Erickson’s parents and smuggled them into the school with a guitar case and backpacks.

Erickson’s account The following is what Erickson told investigators, according to the affidavit:

He said he received a message on Snapchat the night before the shooting telling him not to go to school tomorrow. The Snapchat contact said he was “super suicidal” and “wanted to get revenge on a lot of people,” the document says. The individual was considering killing his mother and siblings as well.

The name is redacted, or blacked out, but it appears to be describing McKinney.

Erickson told investigators he tried talking the friend out of his plans, but the friend threated to kill him if he told anyone.

The next day, the morning of the shooting, he went to school but left twice. The first time he went home with a friend to let his dog out. He said his parents were not home. He returned to school to receive class attendance credit and left again, this time, he says, to call the police.

As he got home, he received a message from a person, whose name is again redacted but appears to be McKinney, asking him to pick him up from school.

He picked the individual up and took him to his house, where they spent time in the basement. The friend was angry and used cocaine. Erickson said he did not use the drug at that time.

17 county jails receive funding for opioid treatment Medication-assisted treatment gets nearly $1.9 million from state STAFF REPORT

The Colorado Department of Human Services, Office of Behavioral Health has awarded funding to 17 county jails to continue or initiate medication-assisted treatment for people with opioid-use disorder.

According to a news release, the state is awarding nearly $1.9 million to the 17 county sheriff ’s offices that applied for MAT funding through Sept. 29, 2020. MAT combines medication with behavioral therapy and is considered to be the most effective way to treat opioid-use disorder, the release said.

Up to this point, the Office of Behavioral Health has funded medicationassisted treatment services in five of the 17 county jails: Boulder, Denver, Douglas, Jefferson and Pueblo. Nearly 500 people received medication-assisted treatment before or upon release from jail through this funding since 2017.

“In Colorado we continue to increase the availability of MAT services statewide for those who need it, including treatment for people who are incarcerated, in many cases as a result of their addiction,” Robert Werthwein, director of the Office of Behavioral Health, said in the release. “We know that the risk of opioid overdose drastically increases after a period of abstinence such as

nearly $463 million, and the cost of a new courthouse and district attorney’s facilities at nearly $465 million.

The county would do well to get started sooner than later, Line said, as the Denver area’s economic and population booms are sending construction costs ever higher.

Former Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson, who sits on the long-range planning committee, said he’s frustrated it’s taken this long to realistically talk about replacing the jail.

“This isn’t news,” Robinson said of concerns over the jail’s functionality.

“This has been discussed ad nauseum.

The question that needs to be asked of elected officials, and contemplated before this goes to the public, is what took people so long? I know they say it wasn’t the right time or environment to ask for money, but the need has exacerbated and the cost to solve it has expanded dramatically.”

A recent study in North Carolina found that in the first two weeks after being released from prison, former inmates were 40 times more likely to die of an opioid overdose than others, the release said. When looking at heroin-specific overdoses in the same population, the study found that formerly incarcerated individuals’ likelihood of overdose death increased to 74 times the norm within the first two weeks after release, the release said.

The Office of Behavioral Health is providing the funding through the State Opioid Response Grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and thanks to recently passed legislation (SB 19-008), Colorado has ensured this

caused by the Great Recession, said Arapahoe County Board of Commissioners Chairman Jeff Baker.

“Grayson’s got a point,” Baker said.

“But a lot of governments struggled in that period. We deferred a lot of maintenance. The public was going through hard times too, and it wasn’t the right time to approach them for big-ticket items.”

County staff have done an admirable job of keeping the current jail running, Baker said, but past a certain point it stops making sense to keep throwing money at a failing facility.

“Both the jail and courthouse were built to the best practices and standards of the 1980s,” Baker said. “With new facilities, we could incorporate much more effective safety and security protocols, and the buildings could be far more energy efficient.”

The current jail accounts for a fifth of the county maintenance budget, Baker said.

County commissioners are also aggressively seeking out potential state and federal grants to offset the cost of a new jail, Baker said.

“We owe it to the public to spend their money wisely,” Baker said.

Later, he says the two went upstairs and the friend asked where his parents’ safe was. Both knew it contained firearms. He showed the friend and attempted to leave the room but was again threated with his life, he told authorities. The friend then used an ax to break into the safe and allegedly forced Erickson to help.

The friend, according to Erickson, loaded ammunition into magazines obtained from the safe. They both loaded bags with firearms — three handguns and a rifle — and ammunition and went back to the basement, where they each consumed cocaine.

He helped the friend carry and load weapons into the car. The two drove back to school in a Honda Civic.

Erickson took his guitar case holding firearms to classroom 107.

He told his teacher he was sick and was sent to the office. He said he intended to report the incident but had a panic attack and went to the bathroom until he composed himself.

When he returned to the office, the other suspect was waiting for him and again allegedly threatened to kill him and others if he said

The two went to classroom 107 and split up, entering through two different doors. Erickson said he walked straight toward someone to warn that person, but the individual wasn’t paying attention and his friend was watching him.

He went back to the doorway, when he saw McKinney reach for a gun. He then grabbed a handgun from his guitar case, pointed it straight and yelled at everyone to get down.

Erickson said two students rushed him and hit him, and the gun went off in the skirmish. As they brought him down, he released his gun and began trying to warn others that his friend was also armed and planned to kill people. He heard more gunshots and described being in shock.

“Devon repeatedly claimed he was going to stop (redacted) but couldn’t articulate how or why he never told an adult,” the affidavit says.

Erickson allowed detectives to search his phone, provided them security credentials and signed a waiver. Toward the end of his interview, “Devon was having difficulty describing how he tried stopping (redacted),” and he requested an attorney.

McKinney’s account McKinney told investigators he wants to transition from female to

male. In court, McKinney’s attorneys say he prefers male pronouns and goes by the name Alec, although court documents refer to him by his legal name of Maya.

As a minor, his name is redacted in the affidavit. Colorado Community Media is identifying McKinney because District Attorney George Brauchler has decided to prosecute the teen as an adult.

McKinney was interviewed by a separate investigator. Here is his account of the shooting, according to the affidavit: McKinney was planning a school shooting for weeks and got Erickson involved in the plan. He “wanted kids at the school to experience bad things, have to suffer from trauma like he has had to in his life. He wanted everyone in that school to suffer and realize that the world is a bad place,” the affidavit says.

He said he targeted fellow students who made fun of him and called him disgusting for wanting to transition from female to male. He wanted to specifically kill kids who had called him names and broken his laptop.

He confirmed speaking with Erickson by Snapchat the night before to discuss his plan and says he “trashed” the house looking for a key to the safe but instead found an ax and crowbar. He said he threatened Erickson with the ax, acting as

if he was going to hit him with it.

He wrote in the closet where the safe was held “the voices win” and spray-painted Erickson’s mother’s car in the garage. They then set it on fire. The fire burned out and they left.

He stated they knew they could get through the middle school entrance of the K-12 charter school without being checked. He knew students he didn’t like would be in in the classroom they targeted. Erickson was also a student in the class.

They entered the classroom from different doors. He said Erickson shut the door in a way as to prevent it from being opened from the outside. They each pulled out their guns and said, “Nobody move.”

McKinney said Erickson fired the first shot and then he began firing.

McKinney emptied two guns, was confronted by students and a teacher but escaped and left the room. He planned to kill himself outside the school but didn’t know how to work the third gun he obtained.

He was then confronted by the armed security guard at gunpoint and complied with the guard’s orders to get on the ground.

McKinney told investigators he has experienced suicidal and homicidal thoughts since he was 12, “and more recently in the last few weeks when he planned the school shooting.”

Security guard’s bullet wounded student, document says

A court document in the case against one STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting suspect released June 20 shows a private security guard at the school is believed to have fired gunshots at a responding officer and injured a female student.

The document, an affidavit, also shows the guard confronted one of the suspects, 16-year-old Alec McKinney, at gunpoint and was able to place him in handcuffs.

A school resource officer was not assigned to STEM at the time of the May 7 shooting. A private security guard from BOSS High Level Protection covered the school. He is not identified by name in the affidavit, which says other officers reported he fired two rounds at Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office Lt. Lori Bronner, injuring a student in a nearby classroom. The student was located in room 106 and the suspects opened fire in room 107.

Bronner is the sheriff ’s office spokeswoman for the school resource officer program. The affidavit

misspells her name as “Laurie” but a separate spokeswoman for the sheriff ’s office confirmed the lieutenant was Lori Bronner.

The guard told investigators that before firing his weapon he saw “a muzzle come around the corner,” a likely reference to one of the responding officers’ guns.

Following the shooting, reports that the guard fired his weapon at other first responders and injured a student surfaced, leading 18th Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler to forward an investigation into the allegations to 4th Judicial District Attorney Dan May in Colorado Springs.

A spokesperson for the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office said the office had no updates when asked if the investigation was ongoing and if charges had been brought against the guard. The spokesperson did not know when a decision would be made.

In the days after the shooting, the guard’s employer lauded him for helping save lives by detaining a suspect until law enforcement took the teen into custody.

Grants support reality experiences, bat monitoring STAFF REPORT

A Colorado Parks and Wildlife pilot program that uses mobile technology to connect visitors to parks, and a research project related to monitoring bat populations in state parks were awarded grants from Great Outdoors Colorado.

GOCO awarded $17,982 to the Augmented Reality Experience pilot program, which will invest in Agents of Discovery, a free mobile-based game already used in more than 50 U.S. Forest Service areas and numerous parks internationally, according to a news release.

The grant is part of the Director’s Innovation Fund, a partnership between Great Outdoors Colorado and Colorado Parks and Wildlife to create a funding source for one-time, innovative projects that would not otherwise receive funding from either organization.

Almost every Colorado state park has interpretive signage or offers educational programming to help connect visitors to the natural resources and histories of the places. While fixed interpretive signage continues to be an important storytelling resource in parks, relevance can be limited by season or changing messages over time, the release says.

to provide more timely information about what is happening in the parks and create more relevant experiences for visitors, and the program provides an opportunity to reach broader and more diverse audiences, according to the release.

The 10 parks selected for the program are Barr Lake State Park, Chatfield State Park, Eleven Mile State Park, Cherry Creek State Park, Staunton State Park, St. Vrain State Park, Trinidad Lake State Park, Cheyenne Mountain State Park, Ridgway State Park and Steamboat Lake State Park.

to the release. However, very little data exists on their presence and habitat use in state parks. With the grant, mobile and stationary data collection units will be created to monitor the elusive creatures’ behavior, roosting, and hibernation patterns.

Park visitors will be invited to participate in the data collection process.

With the help of a bat-naturalist volunteer, visitors will be provided with ultrasonic microphones that pair with a smartphone app, along with instructions needed to observe and document bats in a mobile fashion. Stationary units use a professional-grade ultrasonic recorder to detect bat acoustic activity.

The grant is part of the Resource Stewardship Program, which is responsible for inventory, planning, and management advice for all natural and cultural resources in Colorado’s state parks. The BAM project rep-

After struggling with depression, area man tells his story Family speaks up to challenge mental health stigma for men

Twenty-two years after he first started struggling with depression, Geoff Grandi’s symptoms hadn’t gone away.

They had only intensified, exacerbated by a number of factors — his job, his mother’s death, an earlier divorce and the stress of being a new dad.

But what bothered him most was the way these stressors made him irritable toward his family. And he found himself constantly worried about his relationship with his second wife, Whitney, and their newborn son, Woods.

“That’s such a fear to say, `I think my depression has pushed me into a violent tendency,’ ” the Arvada resident said. “I would just tell her to leave me. I needed to get away, and I thought everyone else would be better off.”

As he prepared for a friend’s bachelor weekend in Breckenridge last summer, he said he also prepared to take his life, bringing a loaded gun with him.

“But it was a fulfilling weekend. I felt loved,” he said. “I ended up not following through.”

When he returned home, Geoff, now 35, gave his gun to Whitney and visited the ER and was transferred to West Pines Behavioral Health, a psychiatric hospital at 3400 N. Lutheran Parkway in Wheat Ridge. It was the first time he’d sought professional help for his depression.

“As men, we need to be tough. We can’t let our families down, we can’t let our friends down,” he said about why he waited so long. “It’s because of society’s expectations.”

Now in an outpatient program with the hospital, Geoff — with Whitney — has been sharing his story as part of Let’s Talk Colorado, an annual mental health campaign by the Tri-County Health Department. The campaign seeks to raise awareness around mental health with a goal of lessening the stigma associated with it and has focused this year on men in particular, encouraging them to speak up about their struggles.

“Men don’t seek care at the same rate women do,” said John Douglas, executive director of Tri-County

Health, “even though numbers show they suffer from depression, anxiety and other obstacles to their well-being the same as everyone else.”

Looking for solutions Those involved with the campaign have pointed to the significant difference between suicide rates for men and women. According to the Colorado Health Institute, in 2017 nearly 900 of Colorado’s 1,175 suicides were committed by men.

“We need to be talking about mental health in very much the same way we talk about physical health,” said Glenn Most, executive director at West Pines, a campaign partner. “If people in the public eye can talk about it, that certainly helps lift that stigma.”

Experts say that stigma stems from traditional gender roles and societal expectatiions, which lead many men to avoid talking about psychological or emotional struggles.

The Grandis suggested that new resources for men could contribute to the conversation, including more advertisements and coverage about the topic in the news or in podcasts, which, Geoff and Whitney said, have made a difference for them.

“We need these things showing what the symptoms look like,” Whitney

Phil Stockton agreed. As clinician and program manager at Khesed Wellness in Denver, which provides affordable mental healthcare services, Stockton sees far fewer male patients than female patients, he said.

He suggested city leaders, such as police and fire chiefs, could affect change by encouraging men in the community to talk more about mental health. This would especially benefit men older than 30 years old, who are the least likely to come to his practice, he said, though he has seen an increasing number of male patients younger than 30.

“There’s this new acceptance amongst that generation that I find really exciting,” he said. “But at the same time, I’m not seeing anything near that for people who are 30 and up.”

He also believes the stigma may change if more men take up careers in mental health. According to a 2016 report from the American Psychological Association, only 35% of psychologists are male.

“If a male client is reaching out and

they’re wanting to see a male clinician, and then you factor in insurance, the choices get narrower,” Stockton said. “It’s important to look at how we can make the field appeal to men.”

Steps in the right direction While those seeking to support men acknowledge there’s plenty of work to do, they also feel the past few years have heralded in progress.

“It may seem small, but even the fact that Geoff is sharing his story and the media is willing to cover this topic is progress,” Most said. “I’m not sure that would have happened years ago.”

The Grandis continue working toward progress.

“It’s something we have to work on every day,” Whitney said. “There are still bad days, but there are also good days.”

Geoff agreed, saying the family makes constant improvement through regular communication, couple’s counseling and the embracing of life’s ups and downs.

“I’ve been taking more time for myself and realizing I, as a person, am important,” Geoff said. “It’s showed me that yes, I can be a good dad.”

Concentrated innuendo brings about maximum effectiveness

ix words may not seem like a lot, but think of the evocations of “I love you. Or do I?” You have a story, complete with conflict.

Entries in the sixword story contest came from California, Illinois, Ohio, and Colorado. From a well-known, local Craig Marshall radio voice. From an Smith 80-year old, former high school English teacher, and from a 17-year-old aspiring writer.

I received entries from two notable Colorado artists, and one each from a

husband and wife.

Many of the stories were straightforward, a few were oblique, some were witty.

Here are the best ones.

Gretchen Goetz (Santa Monica), submitted, “We have five. Will bring them.” There was no explanation.

It reminded me of the cryptic title of a Jack Nicholson film. If you have ever wondered what “Five Easy Pieces” means, it refers to the title on a piano recital program that appeared in a scene that was cut.

My high school English teacher, Sharene Schmalz (Cincinnati) sent, “Bunnies lost to the cat today.”

I replied, “After 80 glorious years of Chaucer, Dostoevsky, Faulkner, and Shirley MacLaine, you send a story about tiny field animals being con-

fronted and consumed by a feral cat?”

“Yes.” Anne McWhite (Arvada) wrote, “Climate change solutions: do or die.”

Art McWhite (Arvada) wrote, “Big bang collapse: all’s said done.”

One of my favorites brought a smile with it: “Why do I read your column!” was written by Parker’s Pete Miller. It wasn’t a question, exactly. It seemed like an exasperation.

Painter Amy Metier (Boulder) wrote a six-word mystery: “If your evil twin wants to.”

You might recognize the name Scott Arbough (Castle Rock), who entered a bit of existentialism: “Where you are, there you are.”

Stanley Gould (Castle Rock) took the opportunity to pitch his new “platform for finding and building local

communities.”

After “Knowledge Power. Get Knowledge. Get Power,” he added a few hundred additional words about his project.

The most unusual entry was submitted by Ken Faig Jr. (Glenview, Illinois).

It consisted of six mathematical symbols that translate to, “Not no one equals some one.”

Laura H. (Arvada), “Cheap land: Pele erupts, owners burned.”

Kendle Frank (Parker), 17, “Be brave. Contact my restless heart.”

Brett Ganyard (Aurora), “American flags continually at half staff.”

Bill Hines (Highlands Ranch) might have read the news the day he wrote: “Took a hike. Lost at night.”

here is no avoiding it, there will come a time when we will all face some type of conflict in our lives.

We can could find ourselves WINNING in a conflict WORDS over opinions, we may have disagreements at work or at home, and we may even be conflicted in our own heart and mind about doing something or making a difficult decision of Michael Norton some kind.

For some of us, conflicts are no issue at all. We take them on and deal with whatever it is so we can get past it and move on. For others, conflict is really hard. For those of us who have wrestled with conflict, over time we tend to become conflict avoidant. We will do anything to try and avoid a conflict or we will prolong it until it becomes so bad, we are finally forced to face it. And that never ends well.

Another strategy for those of us who hate conflict is to wish it away

or hope that it will just go away.

This strategy typically never works — as a matter of fact, the longer we wait, the worse things usually become.

Some of the best coaching I ever received around this came many years ago. I was encouraged to do the hardest thing first. On any given day, whatever the hardest task or conversation I had to do or have, I should tackle those first.

This was great advice and has helped me tremendously over the years. If I didn’t tackle the hard things first, they would occupy my time and I couldn’t focus on the other things I had to do as the hardest ones were still there, creating worry, fear, and doubt in my heart and head. As soon as I got past the hard conversation or difficult task, and any conflict, I was free, mentally and emotionally, and much more productive.

In order to address conflicts and do the hardest things first, we must have courage and conviction. The courage to say or do what we know is right, and the conviction to stand behind our beliefs. If we

are stressed or unhappy about the way certain things are happening, and if we have been trying to avoid a conflict that has been brewing, all we need to do is find that 20 seconds of bravery that it takes to initiate a conversation and take action.

The hope is that the majority of our lives will be spent living conflict free.

Although there are a few people who thrive on conflict and like to even stir the pot a little to create conflict, most of us would prefer to avoid conflict and create harmony wherever we can. We each have a unique personality style and for some, dealing with conflict is easy, for other personality styles, it is much harder. And regardless of our personality style, the best way to deal with conflict is to have the courage and conviction to do what we know is right, rip the BandAid off, and deal with the hardest things first.

he Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps came to Denver on June 20 to play a standstill performance during Civic Center Eats. The corps usually plays in formations but did a standing concert at the Greek Amphiteatre, 150 W. 14th Ave. The corps played two performances, one at 11:45 a.m., the next at 12:30 p.m.

On June 21, the Blue Knights were scheduled to head to Englewood High School, 3800 S. Logan St., for their send-off performance at 7 p.m.

erry Schaak boasts an impressive resume.

Schaak, 63, holds a Ph.D from Yale University, with post-doctoral work at Princeton. As a professor of microbiology and immunology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, he contributed to dozens of studies of cancer and viruses.

When the father of two college-age girls was hit in the back of the head with a baseball in 2013, he seemed to come away unscathed. But as the months went by, it became clear his memory was going. In 2014, he was diagnosed with dementia.

Now, with his career over and his ability to complete a thought or a sentence continuing to slip from him, Schaak’s brilliant mind has left him with some elements of his old life: memories of his childhood in the Grand Canyon with his father, a park ranger; his love for his wife and daughters; and an easy smile and laugh.

On a warm June morning, Schaak sat in the sun-dappled garden of Littleton’s Depot Art Gallery, sharing coffee and muffins with others living with early-onset dementia.

“It’s great just getting to talk,” Schaak said. “This is glorious.”

Schaak is one of 20 or so clients of Out & About Colorado, a Littletonbased group that provides outings and socializing activities for people in the earlier stages of dementia.

A deepening cycle Early-onset dementia can be devastating, said Mary Archer, the founder and owner of Out & About Colorado.

“There’s a cycle that happens,” Archer said. “You’re diagnosed, you probably lose your job and driver’s license, you lose connections to colleagues and friends, and you lose the feeling of productivity and providing for your family.”

The cycle only deepens, Archer said, as victims often wind up home alone most days, isolated and confused.

They begin to feel unable to have conversations, worsening as friends stop visiting, scared of uncomfortable situations.

That’s where Out & About Colorado comes in.

Archer and her team take groups of up to six people on outings, visiting museums, gardens and art galleries, going for walks in the park or out to lunch.

“The benefit is twofold,” Archer said. “The clients benefit, and so do their families. Their care partner at home gets respite, knowing their loved one is enjoying themselves. Caring for someone with dementia can be a 24/7 job.”

When clients return home, Archer said, it’s often with renewed vigor.

“We’ve given them an opportunity to have conversation. They have a story

They’re more alert.”

Schaak was joined at the Depot Art Gallery by other Out & About clients, like Lynn Salvatore, 72, a former hairstylist.

“When I was diagnosed with dementia, I was furious,” Salvatore said. “I’m a very strong woman, but my strength meant nothing. I felt like I wasn’t anything anymore.”

But at Out & About Colorado, Salvatore said, she finds camaraderie and love.

“When I was working, I loved people,” Salvatore said. “My clients were great friends. I lost so much. Here I can have people around me again.”

Difficult diagnosis Early-onset dementia often takes a long time to diagnose, because those afflicted may not even think it’s a possibility, Archer said.

“They might think they’re just overtired, that they need a vacation,” Archer said.

She had one client, a man in his 50s, who couldn’t understand why he got fired from five jobs in the span of a year, before he was diagnosed.

Dementia is an umbrella term that covers several disorders, Archer said.

Some, like Alzheimer’s disease, are poorly understood — and ultimately fatal. Other forms have a strong hereditary component or are linked to

head trauma. But prolonged, untreated depression or post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as poor diet and lack of exercise, can also be contributing factors.

All forms of dementia can shorten victims’ lifespans, she said.

“I know everybody in my care has a limited number of days ahead of them,” Archer said. “I’ll help them make the most of these years.”

Archer’s clients have lessons to teach her too, she said.

“They live in the moment,” Archer said. “They don’t live in the past much anymore, and they sure don’t live in the future. It’s about what they’re experiencing right now.”

‘A shining light’ Archer, who holds a degree in sociology and a certificate in gerontology from the University of California, worked for years with seniors in nursing homes and adult day care, she said.

“I kept noticing younger people coming into programs for older people,” Archer said. “I wanted to create something for those people who didn’t perhaps feel as comfortable hanging out with folks much older than them.”

Now in its fifth year, Out & About Colorado has four staff members, and continues to expand its offerings, including support groups for family members — even if their loved ones aren’t clients.

Family members of people with dementia often suffer in silence, Archer said.

“Caring for someone with dementia can be tremendously expensive,” Archer said. “Especially if they were the family breadwinner. Friends and family stop coming around. Spouses talk about social isolation — nobody invites you places if your partner has Alzheimer’s.”

Out & About Colorado is a godsend to Nancy Litvak, whose husband Gary Sindler is one of Archer’s clients.

“He has so much fun with all his buddies,” Litvak said. “Men in general don’t have boyfriends like women have girlfriends. It’s so healthy for him. It’s been such a shining light for us.”

‘Colorado’s Historic Churches’ ready for summer reading Local writer shares photos, stories of state’s houses of worship

They’re built from wood, brick, adobe, stone and combinations thereof and vary in size from small chapel to ones that seat many hundred parishioners. Many still function every Sunday and at other times their community needs them-for weddings, memorial services and an occasional concert or theatrical production.

Littleton writer, historian and Colorado native Linda Wommack, author of several books of Colorado history, has collected photographs and compiled notes from many of the state’s historic churches and published an account of them: “Colorado’s Historic Churches.”

It will be a nice addition to the Colorado bookshelf — or perhaps readers have a small collection of books they carry in the car as our family did when exploring the many historic mountain towns. It will be nice to step into these buildings, knowing something of their stories.

Mining camps spread across the state, followed in many cases by a railroad that brought other citizens to fill miner’s needs. In many cases,

after a town or mining camp was functioning, especially if there were women involved, some residents sensed that something was missing — a spiritual life. They started up small congregations, meeting in homes or public buildings at first, then led by a particular individual, a committee or a large congregation, found a vacant lot — or an individual would donate a lot in some cases, and/or lead the way in raising a building.

Many are still used by congregations, but not all.

Some had distinctive shapes and designs and many were constructed in what we call “Carpenter Gothic.” A familiar nearby example is St. Philip in the Field Church on Plum Creek in Douglas County, with its accompanying Bear Canon Cemetery, Wommack writes about builder Newton S. Grout, a New Englander inspired by churches of his youth. The congregation was formed in 1870 and the church and cemetery are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Also listed is Castle Rock’s St. Francis of Assisi Church, which eventually became the Old Stone Church Restaurant when its congregation moved on to a larger facility.

Chapters focus on areas The book is organized with a South Platte River Valley Chapter; Chapter Two is The Mountain Valleys; Chapter Three is The Arkansas River Valley and Chapter Four is The Rio Grande Valley.

Bishop Nicholas C. Matz helped build Catholic churches across the prairie as towns developed. Wommack writes of the severe weather on the eastern plains in Sterling, where hail demolished the timber Catholic church three times. Parishioners asked Matz to send a resident priest and a brick and stone church was dedicated in 1911, with 500 Catholics in attendance.

The arrival of the railroad in Colorado brought a number of Irish workers and the need for Matz to build a new Denver Catholic parish, built on five lots at the corner of Larimer and Machebeuf streets, located between trolley and rail tracks in the area now called Five Points In Denver, some large churches grew, such as Trinity Methodist Episcopal, designed by Denver’s first licensed architect, Robert S. Roeschlaub, which still stands out on Broadway. Zion Baptist, the first black congregation, at Ogden and 24th, has celebrated its 150th anniversary.

Wommack writes of Baby Doe Tabor’s connection with Denver’s Sacred Heart Church — and her husband Horace’s deathbed conversion as he lay ill at the Windsor Hotel. That church, supported for many years by Father Casey, became Denver’s first designated historic property by the city council in 1975. The Colorado Historical Society has helped in recent years toward further restoration of the fragile landmark.

In 1882, Temple Emanuel, the first Jewish synagogue, was built, designed by architect Frank E. Edbrooke, “including Moorish and Romanesque details,” the author says. Other major Denver churches followed.

Convent began in 1912 In Littleton, the Carmelite Convent was established in 1912, beginning with the wedding of Jacques B. Benedict and June Brown, who bought an old red brick farm house and began renovations, transforming it into a

“Beaux Art-Arts Villa of sorts.” (He also designed Littleton’s Town Hall, Carnegie Library and First Presbyterian Church.) Benedict hired artisans to paint frescos on several walls and hired landscape architect S.R. DeBoer to design the grounds.

The couple lived in the Benedict House for 35 years, and after the Benedict’s death, it was given to the Order of Carmelite Nuns, who live and worship there now. Improvements include a chapel, connected by a matching red brick arch.

In the plains, near Julesberg, is the Virginia Dale church, named after the wife of the “notorious Jack Slade.”

And in Boulder County, the First Baptist Church is the “finest example of Late Gothic Revival architecture in the state.

Central City, Georgetown, Silver Plume and Breckenridge all developed churches and in the Breckenridge area, the reader learns more about the legendary Methodist preacher Father John Lewis Dyer, who traveled through the many mining camps, sometimes on snowshoes, to preach to the residents. He caused confusion in Breckenridge by ringing the firemen’s bell to call folks to church … with permission of city officials.

Elsewhere in the western part of the state, one reads about Viejo San Acacio Chapel in Costilla County — one of Colorado’s oldest churches, and Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Conejos, the first sanctioned Catholic Church in what would become the State of Colorado, where Father Machebeuf said his first Mass “before the dawn, by the light of pinon wood fires,” he wrote…

This large paperback book is crammed with historic photographs, from Wommack’s collection and that of the Denver Public Library and others she has tracked down.

Perhaps it will lead a reader on happy summer excursions in the mountain towns to learn more of their histories.

Apollopalooza celebrates 50th anniversary of moon landing One small step for man, one giant leap for Wings Over the Rockies

For those who weren’t alive on the night of July 20 a half-century ago, it’s difficult to imagine what it must’ve been like to see men land on the moon for the first time. For the millions watching, it was an event that will never be forgotten.

Metro resident Stephen Kelly certainly didn’t. And when a little over a year-and-a-half ago he realized the landing’s 50th anniversary was nearing, he thought it was an occasion worth celebrating.

“I went to the management at the Wings Over the Rockies Museum, where I had volunteered for a long time, and mentioned to them this was coming,” Kelly said. “I thought it would be great if the museum could commemorate the event. Originally, I was thinking of a one-day event to celebrate. It’s really expanded since then.”

Apollopalooza will be held at the air and space museum, 7711 E. Academy Blvd. in Denver, from July 13 through 20. The event will feature everything from film screenings and Apollo veterans panels to a STEAM festival and career mingle.

and Apollo 8. However, the Apollo 11 moon landing has the feel of a triumph that can be touched,” wrote Jessica Castellano, Wings Over the Rockies’ chief development officer, in an email interview. “We not only went to space, we touched it, walked on it, and came home. Nothing has been the same since that day, for our aerospace heroes and for our global citizens.”

One of the main goals was to offer an event of substance and without fluff, said Kelly, who chaired the committee that organized Apollopalooza.

Fortunately, education is a key part of Wings’ mission statement, and Denver is home to a burgeoning aerospace industry. National titans like Ball Aerospace, Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Sierra Nevada Corp. all call the state home.

“We have a great line-up in-store, including folks from the Colorado School of Mines and University of Colorado, who don’t just teach in these fields – they’re involved in current programs working to get people back on the moon,” Kelly explained. “We have a number of folks that were actually veterans of the Apollo program in one aspect or another, and these guys have some stories to tell.”

Some of the marquee names include Gene Kranz, NASA flight director for all Project Gemini missions, as well as Apollo 11. He also was the leader of the Apollo 13 “Tiger Team” (actor Ed Harris played him in Ron Howard’s “Apollo 13” film). Dr. Harrison H. Schmitt, an Apollo 17 astronaut and moonwalker, and Joe Engle, astronaut and X-15 pilot from Colorado Springs, are just a few other people who will be on hand.

Effort seeks civic discourse, civility among different views Better Arguments Project tackles the tech boom at Thornton workshop

W

hen Coloradans hear news reports that Amazon or any national tech giant is coming to to the state, Sam Bailey figures they imagine an invasion.

“When you saw something on the news, like Amazon’s (HQ2 expansion proposal) the assumption we hear, in letters, emails and phone calls, is that 50,000 new people are going to land at Denver International Airport, come on down Peña Boulevard and ruin our lives,” said Bailey, economic development vice president for the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation.

On the contrary, he said: Most hightech companies starting up or moving to Denver hire locally, creating a multitude of new jobs for Colorado residents and boosting the quality of life.

“These are good growing pains,” he said. “They come with challenges, just as anything does. But I’ll say, though, it beats an out-migration from the state.”

The state’s economic expansion largely ignores much of the population, especially women of color, she said.

“The real issue is how do we manage the transitions as we go through growth and what are the unintended — or even the intended consequences — of this growth,” Calderon said.

Calderon said she saw how stagnant growth and economic decline affected the state during the last recession.

“But back then, we also had choices about what we were going to do and those were made to the detriment of some people and helped others in their goal of wealth building,” she said. “So I want us to be honest about all that — about what are the costs.”

That disagreement was the point of a workshop June 13 at Anythink Library’s Wright Farms branch in Thornton — “Better Arguments: Tech boom tensions in Denver.”

Civic discourse The workshop was part of the national Better Arguments Project spearheaded by the Aspen Institute, the Allstate insurance corporation and global educational organization Facing History and Ourselves. The goal is to promote better arguments among people who disagree, especially in today’s divisive political climate.

“Everyone’s views are legitimate; people have their views,” said Allstate’s Tara Leweling, vice president of corporate relations. “But at the same time, people are just going to war and not talking to each other. We wondered if there was something we could to help bridge the divide and help people come together in a constructive way.”

The workshop was the second event the Better Arguments Project has hosted, after a March meeting in Detroit, Michigan, that drew an estimated 300 people.

Roger Brooks, president of Facing History and Ourselves, said organizers were paying attention to how the attendees spoke to each other and argued and would use those discussions to help frame future workshops.

Filmmakers from the Aspen Institute recorded many of the discussions and planned to release a series of fiveto 10-minute videos on the group’s website.

‘Living history’ locomotive returns home after 12 years And just in time for Colorado Railroad Museum’s 60th anniversary

Rail fans from across the country are excited that an iconic Rio Grande Southern locomotive will soon be in operation again.

“It’s an important piece of railroad history, and to actually be able to operate it is really cool,” said Donald Tallman, executive director of the Colorado Railroad Museum. “It’s truly living history.”

Tallman is referring to the Rio Grande Southern Locomotive No. 20, which arrived home June 4 to the museum in Golden after undergoing restoration in Strasburg, Pennsylvania, for the past 12 years.

“It’s been a long time,” said Jeff Taylor, the museum’s curator of rolling stock and equipment. “There’s been a lot of hype about it coming home.”

Having Locomotive No. 20 is exciting enough on its own, Tallman said, but even more so because it arrived just in time for the Colorado Railroad Museum’s 60th anniversary celebration that runs July 12-14.

A narrow-gauge engine built in 1899 for the Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad, it was originally used by the mining industry and built to climb and navigate the winding and steep Phantom Canyon to and from Cripple Creek.

There were only five of its kind, Taylor said, and Locomotive No. 20 is the only one left — all the others have been scrapped for parts.

“The railroad was good at recycling,” Taylor said, adding that Locomotive No. 20 has parts that were original to the other four locomotives.

By the late 1930s, Locomotive No. 20 was serving tourists. But in 1949, it became a movie star and played the role of Emma Sweeny, a locomotive in the film “A Ticket to Tomahawk.”

The last time Locomotive No. 20 ran was in November 1951, and it was sold at auction to the Rocky Mountain Railroad Club in 1952.

transferred ownership of the train to the Colorado Railroad Museum in 2006, and that year, an anonymous donor gave a donation to get it back to operational condition. The stipulation for the donation was that Locomotive No. 20 be rebuilt by the Strasburg Rail Road.

Strasburg Rail Road specializes in the steam engine, Tallman said.

Locomotive No. 20 returned to Golden with about 80 percent of the work done, Taylor said. The Strasburg Rail Road did the major work needed to certify it for federal standards. That means if the Colorado Railroad Museum chooses, it can take Locomotive No. 20 on tours to places outside of the museum once it’s operational, Taylor said.

Taylor and a team of about 15 will complete the rest of the work at the Colorado Railroad Museum. What is left is mostly cosmetic and “fine detail work,” Taylor said.

He expects Locomotive No. 20 to be operational sometime in 2020, but museum visitors are able to view it now as it’s being worked on in the museum’s shop, Taylor said.

Tallman noted that unlike many other railroad museums’ exihibits, which include artifacts from all over the country, the Colorado Railroad Museum is especially “unique because everything is focused on Colorado.

“The entire collection either ran within or through Colorado,” Tallman said. “That’s really special.”

‘He meant so much to this community’ Denver Broncos honor late owner Pat Bowlen

On Jan. 25, 1998, Littleton residents Sandy and David Alexander were sitting at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego as they witnessed the Denver Broncos win the franchise’s first Super Bowl. Following the game, Broncos owner Pat Bowlen handed over the Lombardi Trophy, awarded to Super Bowl winners, to quarterback John Elway, saying “This one is for John.”

Following the Broncos’ Super Bowl victory in 2016, Elway, now general manager and president of football operations for the team, held the Lombardi Trophy and said, “This one is for Pat.” Bowlen, who had been fighting Alzheimer’s disease, died on June 13 at the age of 75. On June 18, there was a free, open-house tribute at Broncos Stadium at Mile High.

More than 5,000 people came to the tribute to honor the life of Bowlen.

The team had artifacts on display, including Bowlen’s fur coat, the team’s Lombardi trophies, game balls and more.

Bowlen will be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Aug. 3 along with former Denver Broncos player Champ Bailey.

“It feels like someone I had met died,” Denver resident Hugo Ramirez said. “He meant so much to this community and to this city.”

Cold, wet weather delays farm produce, growers say Farmers market offerings are slim by normal June standards

Colorado’s wet spring may be good news for the state’s drought outlook, but it also means delays for the state’s produce, said growers at the Aspen Grove Farmers Market on June 19.

“It’s a late season this year, and people need to be patient,” said Daniel Dukic of Forte Farms in Palisade, on Colorado’s Western Slope. “We just now got cherries. We should see the first peaches by the end of June.”

On the plus side, Duckic said, the extra moisture — Colorado saw more rain by June this year than in all of 2018, according to the National Weather Service — means this year’s Western Slope peach harvest should be a big one.

It’s not just Colorado seeing delays, said OLN Markets manager Jeremy Becker.

“There are problems all over the place,” Becker said. “It’s scary when it’s late June and lots of our produce is coming from California and Mexico.

We should be seeing stuff from Georgia, Florida, even Nebraska and Kansas, but we just aren’t yet.”

Beets have been one of few good crops that have come in so far this year, said OLN manager Jeremy Becker.

Cold weather crops are doing well, Becker said.

“The spaghetti squash is a hot seller, and we’ve got local beets that are pretty great,” Becker said. “We’ve got some Colorado garlic that’s just fantastic.”

Wet weather means more flowers for bees, said Noah Zinter, a manager for Bjorn’s Raw Whipped Colorado Honey, but the cold winter was tough on the company’s hives, which stretch between Denver and Boulder.

“We had some big temperature fluctuations that caused some big die-offs,” Zinter said. “The rainfall this spring helps, but a couple months doesn’t make a summer. We’ll see how things shake out.”

Daniel Dukic of Palisade’s Forte Farms said people need to be patient with this year’s Colorado crops, which have been slowed by a cold, wet spring.

Nearby, the issue of camping along the South Platte River in Englewood came to a head earlier this month, when police cleared out roughly 45 homeless camps that were home to around 70 people on June 4. The encampments created problems for public health and safety, according to police. Change the Trend Network, a group that works to address homelessness in the Englewood area, provided information about food, shelters, medical care and other resources during the clearing.

During a cleanup along that river in January 2018, Englewood police counted 21 campsites with about 30 people living on its east banks. Some 25 truckloads of trash, human waste, syringes and needles were hauled out.

Although exact numbers are difficult to come by because homeless populations are counted generally by county, not city, Englewood officials have said the city’s homeless population has grown over the past few years.

Englewood has joined Littleton and Sheridan — its neighbors along the Platte and major roads — in searching for a solution, forming the Tri-Cities Homelessness Policy Group.

The body, which meets monthly, includes city officials, police and community organizations and began in the fall. It aims to study resources and federal, state and regional funding that may be available to help tackle the issue.

Centennial has not communicated with surrounding cities on what the potential effects of a Centennial camping ban would be for them, Wittern said.

To the sheriff ’s office’s knowledge, Centennial and nearby unincorporated Arapahoe County areas don’t have homeless resource centers or shelters, Thompson said. Most of the metro area’s shelter locations are in Denver.

“There are many resource centers or locations where the community can find assistance in Arapahoe County; however, they wouldn’t be specifically identified as just being for the homeless,” Thompson said.

Denver, Colorado Springs and Boulder prohibit camping on public property, according to the Centennial staff report. Parker approved a camping ban in June 2018.

During Denver’s municipal election in May, voters considered an initiative that would have overturned the city’s camping ban. Known as “Right to Survive,” Initiative 300 was turned down by 81% of voters, or about 146,600.

Vista, Creek athletes dominate diamond Ireland’s playing skills bring honors; Mitchell named pitcher of year

Mountain Vista’s Sam Ireland did his usual thing this season, while Nathan Mitchell of Cherry Creek did something that had not happened in 47 years.

Ireland has been named the 2019 Colorado Community Media South Metro Player of the Year and Mitchell was tabbed as the Pitcher of the Year.

Last season, Ireland was selected as both the CCM South Metro Player and Pitcher of the Year, and the University of Minnesota recruit could have been named the same this season with impressive numbers, but Mitchell pitched better than ever for the Bruins.

Ireland was dominant on the mound with a 9-0 record, a 0.91 earned run average with 60 strikeouts, 22 walks and no homers allowed in 54 innings pitched.

He hit .425 with 36 runs batted in and had 13 doubles, one triple and five homers.

“Sam is a dual threat and is probably the best two-way player in the state,” said Vista coach Ron Quintana.

“He makes you beat him,” said Creek coach Marc Johnson, who

completed his 47th season of coaching baseball. “He doesn’t walk a lot of batters and that helps a lot. Mitchell is the reason we won as many games as we did. He won 11 games as a pitcher for us. I’ve never had a pitcher go 11-0.”

In fact Berrian, the Regis Jesuit junior who lives in Castle Pines, had an exceptional season and has been selected as the 2019 Colorado Community Media Girls Golfer of the Year.

“I think I had a great season,” said Berrian who is also a competitive dancer and spends 15 hours a week fine tuning her dancing skills. “I worked real hard on my mental game. I matured and that helped.

“It went really well mentally and physically this season. To succeed with the mental game is tough. It is so easy to get caught up in the bad things.”

Berrian won six of the nine high school tournaments she played this season, finished second once, tied for third and tied for fifth once. Her combined scores for the nine events was 1-over-par. She averaged just over 72 a round.

She won the Class 5A West regional tournament with a 4-under par 67 at Tiara Rado golf course in Grand Junction.

She birdied four of the final five holes she played. Loveland’s Lauren Lehigh, who won her second straight 5A state championship on May 20, was second at the regional with a 68.

Berrian had a 1-over-par 73 on the first day of the Class 5A state tournament held on a wintry day at Harmony golf course in Tinmath. The second round of the tournament was called off after snow covered the course. Lehigh, a senior, was awarded the individual title following her first-round 70.

This summer when she is not dancing, Berrian is scheduled to play in four national junior golf tournaments.

It maintains that public policy debates — about race, rights, equality and many other topics — are necessary for a healthy American civic life.

“There are all sorts of different ways that make people feel different,” Polis said. “And yet through our civil society, we have to come together and have these authentic discussions that lead to a better outcome. And it’s easier to reach a broad consensus when you are not being pulled into different directions by narrowly focused special interests, and keep a focus on the big picture.”

That fed into a panel discussion featuring Calderon, Bailey and Colorado Sun tech reporter Tamara Chuang.

For Calderon, Denver’s tech boom provides jobs but not for the lower economic rungs who could most benefit.

That’s because many of their schools don’t have the resources to train them for tech jobs.

“They also face other challenges outside the classroom,” she said. “Outside the classroom, we see that twothirds of white students have access to a computer at home, but only about 50 percent of students of color do.”

But Bailey said the state does try to use new tax revenues from new businesses to help all levels, with investments in education and transportation.

Organizers have five principles they promote for having a better argument.

1. Take winning off the table. Frame an argument as a way to understand a different point of view rather than winning or even resolving differences.

“That’s actually the heart of the Better Arguments project, which is you guys practicing what we are doing,” Brooks said.

He encouraged people attending the workshop to go forward and respect the people with who they talk.

“A better argument is about a whole bunch of things,” he said. “At every table is a diversity of opinion. We’ve purposely curated each table so that not everyone there thinks the same way or comes from the same perspective. So, be present, but find a way to respect the people you are with. Find ways to connect to them, because that changes the way the conversation goes.

But say what you mean and be honest.”

2. Prioritize relationships and listen passionately. Participants need to really listen to each other, with the goal of learning.

3. Pay attention to context. Participants should acknowledge and understand the culture of the people they are arguing with and how it shapes their point of view.

4. Embrace vulnerability. Instead of limiting discussions to people that agree, participants need to step outside of their beliefs and prepare to have those beliefs challenged.

5. Make room to transform. The goal is to change how people interact in a public space, rather than win. Participants need to be prepared to receive new information and to build community with people they might not agree with.
