LPS kicks off largest-ever bond projects Old Ames Elementary first step in massive effort to upgrade district facilities

WHAT DOES THE MONEY PAY FOR? Littleton Public Schools’ $298 million bond is more than triple the size of its last bond, which was $80 million, passed in 2013.

Homeowners in the school district paid $43 per $100,000 of actual home value toward the bond on this year’s property taxes, said Diane Doney, Littleton Public Schools assistant superintendent. The number is likely to fluctuate slightly in coming years due to the impact of the Gallagher Amendment, which reduces property taxes, and other factors, Doney said.

Mallet-wielding school board members took the first swings at the walls of the old Ames Elementary School in Centennial on June 13, officially kicking off a series of projects under Littleton Public Schools’ largest-ever bond.

As the dust settled, Superintendent Brian Ewert took a few extra swings at a stubborn shelf, which eventually gave way.

“Boy, I hope our new schools are built that tough,” Ewert quipped.

The $298 million bond, approved by voters in November and by far the largest in the district’s history, will see Ames, Newton Middle School and Franklin Elementary schools demolished and replaced, a Career and Technical Education center outfitted adjacent to Littleton High School, and renovations and upgrades to numerous schools and athletic facilities in the district.

The district expects to wrap up the current slate of projects by 2022.

The total repayment cost of the bond will be $584,690,150, according to the district’s website.

elementary school slated to open in the fall of 2021.

The demolition and remediation of the old school is expected to cost $7 million, said Diane Doney, the district’s assistant superintendent, who is overseeing much of the bond work.

The construction of the new school is expected to cost $28 million.

Ames, built in 1963, was one of two LPS schools shuttered in 2008 due to declining enrollment and a budget crunch, Ewert said. The other closed school, Whitman Elementary, has since become the district’s alternative high school.

An influx of young families into the neighborhood in the years since prompted the district to pursue returning an elementary school to the site, Ewert said last fall.

The new school will incorporate a slew of modern design elements, said Kevin Sullivan, a principal with MOA Architecture, which is planning the school.

Though plans for the school are still preliminary, the design presented at the groundbreaking ceremony on June 13 calls for a series of wings radiating from a central hub. Outdoor classrooms would be located in the courtyards between wings.

“This is a collaborative effort between us, the district, teachers, parents and students,” Sullivan said.

The design incorporates lots of natural light, Sullivan said, and rooms and corridors are designed for versatile uses. The building will feature far greater security and energy efficiency than the district’s old schools, Sullivan said.

The preschool currently housed at Ames will be shifted to a new temporary wing at Highland Elementary, Doney said.

Neighborhood shopping center patrons found themselves running into a barbecue-and-blues concert and, in the coming months, might stumble onto events such as a temporary art café or giant board game tournament in Centennial.

Those are the kinds of gatherings that may be featured in parking lots across the city as part of the Spark Centennial program to fund pop-up, or temporary, events. The program intends to bring the community together and call attention to shopping centers in the city, some of which contain closed grocery and other retail stores.

“I think we’re kind of a forgotten shopping center, a little bit. With no anchors, really,” said Terry Walsh, owner of Rolling Smoke BBQ at East Dry Creek Road and South University Boulevard. “The Albertsons space is empty; the Petco space is empty.”

That parking lot across from Arapahoe High School is one of a few in Centennial that have seen large retailers leave vacant buildings behind, and Walsh wants to “revitalize” his center and stay for the long haul. That’s why his business held the first Spark Centennial event June 15 — a crawfish boil, barbecue and blues concert.

The city hopes to fuel more patronage at shopping centers and, possibly, for businesses to fill vacant spaces.

“That would be an added bonus,” said Allison Wittern, city spokesperson. Centennial wants to “capture the curiosity of visitors and (find out) what people would like to see there. And if that resulted in new businesses wanting to locate in Centennial, that would be fantastic.”

The money for each event comes from the city’s economic development budget, Wittern said, and the city started out with the goal of funding five events.

Walsh had wanted to put on a parking lot barbecue gathering since opening his Centennial location in February 2018 — he also has a Rolling Smoke location at Stanley Marketplace in Aurora, where he’s held celebrations at an event center for free.

“It’s just tough to get the financing together to pull something like that off” elsewhere, Walsh said. “We just wanted to bring that same atmosphere and vibe down here in Centennial — we (thought) the community would love it just as much.”

Spark Centennial is a pilot program, Wittern said, and it’s intended to get the community together and talking about what residents want.

“The purpose really is to help ‘spark’ interaction and connect the community by bringing people to events and shopping centers,” Wittern said, “and you never know where it can go from there.”

With one month down and one to go, the Colorado Republican Party’s vice chair has ended her effort to remove state Rep. Tom Sullivan from office, saying the party will instead focus on other recalls and a petition to overturn a rule that could change the way Colorado’s presidential vote would be allocated.

Sullivan “While we are pulling the recall today to focus on other essential efforts, Sullivan does not get a free pass,” said Kristi Brown, state GOP vice chairwoman, in a June 11 statement on Facebook.

“2020 is the year to oust him, with the support Brown of voters who now know how extreme he is.”

Ground was broken in May on a new artificial turf fields at Heritage and Arapahoe high schools, Davis said, with similar work expected to start soon at Euclid Middle School. Each high school will eventually get two artificial turf fields, and each middle school will get one.

Work is also being done in the kitchens at Powell Middle School and Moody, Runyon and Twain elementary schools, Davis said, including installing new freezers and reworking serving lines to flow faster.

Other projects include revamping Arapahoe’s HVAC system, repairing the roof of Littleton Preparatory Charter School and improving access for people with disabilities at several schools, Davis said.

Some elements of the bond planning have seen changes since they were announced, Davis said.

A planned “junior stadium” at Newton Middle School, at Arapahoe Road and Colorado Boulevard, has been moved from the property’s east end to the west end to be farther from residences, Davis said, partly in response to neighborhood concerns.

The group has since pinned down a new home in a soon-to-be-closed restaurant in Littleton, said Diane McClymonds, TLC’s executive director.

“We’re hopeful to close on the building in early July,” McClymonds said. “We’ll be looking for financial support to pay for it and do much-needed renovations. It’s daunting, I won’t lie. This is big for this organization.”

TLC provides meals to about 500 people a day, McClymonds said.

The district is still waiting to take possession of a pair of buildings near Littleton High School that will become a sprawling Career and Technical Education center, Davis said. The current occupants, a car dealership, have a lease allowing them to stay in the building for another year or two.

Many thanks Ewert said he’s pleased with the initial progress of the bond projects, though he’s eager to make sure the district gets it right.

“Sometimes I feel like a kid in a candy shop, but I also want to make sure we do all this right the first time to provide beautiful, effective learning spaces for future generations,” Ewert said.

Ewert said he’s overflowing with gratitude toward the groups that are helping bring the bond to fruition: the community that voted to approve the bond, the bond oversight committee that is serving as a watchdog of the funds, the long-range planning committee that continues to work on planning projects and priorities, and community stakeholders who are providing input on plans.

The bond projects are welcome investments in the future of a historically high-performing district, said Board of Education President Jack Reutzel moments after pounding away at the wall at Ames.

“Our teachers and administrators have done a remarkable job teaching 21st century skills in buildings that are often from earlier in the last century,” Reutzel said. “Strong communities make strong schools, and vice versa. Knocking this wall down is a first step in something that will last for decades to come.”

Program helps residents discover how city works STAFF REPORT

Centennial residents who would like to know how local government works — from the buildling plan process and street plowing prioritization to where exactly those tax dollars go — are invited to apply for Centennial 101.

The interactive seven-week program allows residents to go behind the scenes to learn how Centennial is unique. Participants also will learn about ways to be more involved in the community.

The recall effort against the Centennial Democrat centered around his support of what’s known as the “red flag” law that allows law enforcement to temporarily take firearms from people deemed a risk to themselves or others. The recall petition also called out this year’s sex education law — which requires including information relevant to LGBT people’s experiences and health needs — and a recent overhaul of Colorado’s oil and gas rules as reasons to recall Sullivan.

The petition, if successful, would have led to an election to decide whether Sullivan would keep his seat in state House District 37. That district encompasses east and central Centennial, nearby unincorporated Arapahoe County areas and the Town of Foxfield.

Brown’s petition was approved May 13 by the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office and needed about 10,000 signatures by voters in the district by July 12 to secure a recall election. When reached for comment, Brown declined to say how many signatures were obtained.

Sullivan, whose son was killed in the 2012 Aurora theater shooting, celebrated the end of the recall effort as “an affirmation to all the hard work we’ve been doing,” he said. Sullivan campaigned heavily on the promise to pass a red flag law.

“The people elected us to do this type of work — we did exactly what we said we were going to do, and they appreciated that,” Sullivan said of his voting record. He focuses on what he calls rights for workers and crime victims.

Added Sullivan: “They said, ‘Keep doing what you’re doing, Tom, that’s why we elected you.”

Following Brown’s announcement, the prominent Rocky Mountain Gun Owners group — which backed the recall — said it would suspend its efforts so it can “refocus our resources on upcoming recalls and legislative battles.”

“It’s clear from our work on the ground in HD 37 that Sullivan is out of step with his constituents and Colorado at large,” said Dudley Brown, RMGO’s executive director, in a statement on Facebook. “Tom Sullivan’s socialist voting record and radically anti-gun positions will be a central discussion piece of the 2020 general election.”

And he didn’t hear complaints about the sex ed law when he walked door-to-door in recent weeks imploring people not to sign the recall petition, he said. That law requires teaching consent and bars shame-based language or gender stereotypes. The standards apply only if schools teach sex ed, which they are not mandated to do.

Neither did he hear criticism on the oil and gas law, he said, which gave local governments new authority to regulate drilling. Kristi Brown argues it will cause industry workers across Colorado to lose jobs.

Sullivan didn’t hear much about the national popular vote law, either, which adds Colorado to a list of states that could award their Electoral College votes to the winner of the national popular vote in presidential elections. It would effectively replace the Electoral College, in which 270 out of 538 electoral votes are needed to win. Proponents say the change would go into effect once enough states, totaling 270 votes, enter the pact.

Kristi Brown characterized the law as “giving away Colorado’s presidential vote to California and New York,” she said in her statement.

A petition to let Colorado voters decide whether to overturn that law has gathered more than 100,000 signatures and needs about 125,000 by Aug. 1 to put the question on the November 2020 ballot, according to Colorado media reports.

“We have decided to pull essential resources from this recall and free up volunteers to help finish the National Popular Vote petition effort and to focus on recalling Democrat senators who are not up for re-election in 2020,” Brown said in her statement. She declined to say which lawmakers Republicans aim to recall.

Republican former state Rep. Cole Wist, who fell to an unlikely defeat against Sullivan in November after the RMGO set its sights on taking him down, announced that he did not support the RMGO-backed effort to remove his former opponent.

Democratic U.S. Reps. Ed Perlmutter, of Golden, and Jason Crow, of Aurora, along with Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, came to Sullivan’s district to oppose the recall, Sullivan said.

Some Democratic state legislators also showed up, he added.

“If they try (a recall) against somebody else, we’ll all rally to support them,” Sullivan said.

Still-young city grapples with question of identity across its regions

T

wenty years ago, Arapahoe County residents watched as Greenwood Village, the nearby and affluent city, crept closer to encroaching on major business corridors along Interstate 25, threatening to poach resources from neighborhoods in the south Denver area.

So residents enlisted in a protracted push to create a city of their own: Centennial, which became one of the largest and most populated municipalities in the Denver metro area. After two years of court battles, a state Legislature green-light and thousands of petition signatures, 77% of about 28,000 voters in what is now Centennial approved the formation of the city.

On Feb. 7, 2001, Centennial

was legally established, capping off a spirited effort to, as one founder put it, “control our own destiny.”

But two decades later, underneath that success, a feeling still persists among residents that the city sprawls wide across an uneven and sometimes confusing map. What’s more, the city’s west and east ends — separated by the Cherry Creek Reservoir and Centennial Airport — can feel like different worlds altogether.

I-25 serves as a natural impediment, said Randy Pye, Centennial’s first mayor and a founder of the city.

“Most people don’t think about it, but Parker Road is the other one. Those are two rivers in Centennial,” Pye said. “And I’ll tell you, today, most people on the east side don’t know what the west side’s doing, and

the west side doesn’t know what’s going on in the east side.”

Jill Meakins, a 25-year resident of Centennial who lives on its east side, said I-25 and the mile-long stretch of Arapahoe Road car dealerships separating the city’s two sides is a unique problem.

“Since Centennial was cobbled out of pre-existing neighborhoods and business areas, the ability of having an identity is very difficult,” Meakins said. “I don’t know how the great divide can be fixed.”

To tackle the dilemma, former mayors, city founders, engaged citizens and everyday area residents weighed in on the question: Who is Centennial?

“It’s mostly a residential area I think of it as. An upscale residential area in which to live that’s well maintained, generally.”

‘No man’s land’ Centennial’s identity is a topic that “there’s still much ongoing pondering over,” said former Arapahoe County commissioner John Brackney, one of the founders who started the movement to form the city in 1998.

“The question is, what’s the sense of belonging? And we, all in our community, say we grew up in Littleton,” the 129-year-old city to the west, said Brackney, who was born and raised in the area and lives in northwest Centennial. “We’d go to Main Street, town hall … my church was down there.”

But, Brackney said, he and his fellow unincorporated Arapahoe County residents “were in this kind of no man’s land,” and they adopted the identity of nearby Littleton.

Unincorporated means an area is not within a city or town, overseen generally by the county government.

“If you live in west Centennial, there’s a pretty unique culture over here,” Brackney said. “Streets at SouthGlenn is still pretty important to us — there’s still some affinity for Littleton, access to Highlands Ranch

“Centennial is a young city.

We don’t have the history of some of the surrounding areas (i.e. Parker, Littleton) and because of that, I think Centennial is a bit disconnected from end to end. I think the city will eventually come into its own identity though. I think the community events are great!”

In the middle of the barbell-shaped city sit Walmart, Topgolf entertainment center and other retail and business centers near Arapahoe Road, with few residential neighborhoods, a stark contrast to either end of the city.

And unless people on the west have a friend to see in the east — or vice versa — there’s not much reason to travel to the other end, Brackney added.

For Cathy Noon, Centennial’s second mayor, parts of Aurora and the Town of Foxfield that stick out in the middle of Centennial’s east wing have posed a challenge.

“It was harder to have that identity as a city because we’re a little more swiss cheese on this side,” said Noon, who lives in the east, where two large swaths of unincorporated Arapahoe County also interrupt the continuity of Centennial’s map. “We don’t have the connection with the west side of town because there’s a different school district, a different parks and rec district. There were things that we inherited that made us more separate than the same.”

Littleton Public Schools covers most of Centennial’s west end, but east of South Holly Street, Cherry Creek School District encompasses the rest of the city. Parks, trails and

recreation in the area are mostly overseen by South Suburban Parks and Recreation in the city’s west and central parts, by Arapahoe Park and Recreation District generally east of Parker Road, and by Arapahoe County Open Spaces. The city owns Centennial Center Park and a few other spaces.

And if that weren’t enough, Postal Service ZIP codes also add to the confusion of where residents live.

Two codes that have carried Littleton’s name also cover areas in west Centennial, and two with the Englewood name show up near the city’s center, in unincorporated Arapahoe County areas like Inverness and Dove Valley — even though Englewood doesn’t border Centennial at all, lying clear to the northwest.

“When you hear a company is coming into Englewood, it could be near Centennial Airport,” Pye said. And even the airport isn’t in Centennial, its name predating the city by almost two decades.

Andrea Suhaka, who lives just west of I-25, remembers that what united residents in the late 1990s was a desire to have a government of people “who could work for each one of us” rather than the “big and impersonal” county.

The aim was for citizens to control their destiny on taxes, boundaries

“I think family-friendly, south Denver suburbs. Typically lower taxes … better property taxes.”

“I’m not so sure that’s the case now,” said Suhaka, secretary for the Centennial Council of Neighborhoods, a coalition of homeowners associations and similar groups. “I can’t say most, but a whole heck of a lot of our residents have moved in since the city was formed. A lot of them act like it’s just another city and don’t even know our history.”

‘For greater good’ With four city council districts spread across the wide city, Suhaka, a former Centennial city councilmember, feels a disconnect in how the city approaches policy.

“Since 2008, the council became too locked up in their individual districts, and they’re not all pulling for the greater good,” Suhaka said. “That attitude is making it harder to establish a uniform identity.”

Meanwhile, the lack of a citywide newspaper left Centennial without “a unifying fourth estate to give news of the area,” Brackney said. The Centennial Citizen, for years, generally didn’t distribute east of I-25 until this May. The paper’s expansion “can get people paying attention to the same things,” Brackney added. “Why would I know something about a neighborhood (many) miles from me unless there’s a citywide newspaper?”

For current Mayor Stephanie Piko, who lives in the east part of town, the difference comes not in the city’s different council districts but, rather, in its neighborhood structures.

“Although each councilmember is in a district, we have a very consistent track record of making sure our decisions are for the good of the whole city,” Piko said. “I think more challenging things are on the far west side of the city, where the HOAs are not as common or not structured as strongly as they are on east side of city.”

The lack of cohesive identity in Centennial hasn’t appeared to affect big policy decisions, but Piko said tasks like trash pickup coordination and maintenance of neighborhood infrastructure are more challenging on the city’s west side.

And, sometimes, the city’s disconnect has come down to pride and recognition.

‘They wouldn’t say Centennial’ Although Centennial’s west end consists of older homes and the east features new growth, both ends are vastly residential and nearly free of large business developments.

“I actually think the neighborhoods on the east and west side, once you’re in them, have very similar feelings,” Piko said.

One change Centennial has seen since its formation is that more people are plainly aware of the city, said Noon, the former mayor. In the beginning, people didn’t know where the boundaries were. “ ‘Am I in? Am I out? I used to be Aurora, I used to be Littleton,’ ” Noon said people would say, referring to confusion over postal addresses. When she became mayor, people would answer the question of where they lived by replying with their neighborhood’s name: Willow Creek, Chapparal and so on.

“They wouldn’t say ‘Centennial,’ ” Noon said. Now, “there’s more identification with the city as a whole and the fact they live in a city.”

The lack of a gathering place in the east part of town also affected the feeling of being connected, Noon said.

Source: City of Centennial, Google Maps “The west side, they’re closer together, to shopping, (to) SouthGlenn,” Noon said. “The east side, we don’t have that gathering place — or we didn’t until we had the park.”

In 2012, Centennial opened Centennial Center Park, its first city-owned park, next to the Centennial Civic Center, the city hall, along Arapahoe Road at 13050 E. Peakview Ave. At the park, the city holds a slew of summer events, complete with food trucks, concerts, a car show and a chalk-art festival.

“One of the reasons we built (the park) is to have that place in the middle for people to come together and have events that bring the city together,” Piko said. “And I think it’s done that exceptionally well.”

Noon has seen some more intangible qualities reinforce people’s pride in living in the city, too, such as its long list of appearances on national “bestof ” rankings for its quality of life and its mention during the 2012 summer Olympics.

“We just can’t forget how much having Missy Franklin in our city helped bring us to the forefront,” Noon said, referring to the Olympian from Centennial. “Her name flashes, and it said `Centennial, Colorado’ — it didn’t say Denver. (People) were darn proud. They were proud that their kids looked up to her.”

And even the more concrete parts of city life — attractions like Topgolf and IKEA moving into Centennial — have brought the middle of the city more identity, Noon said.

But Suhaka is skeptical that a more uniform Centennial identity is possible.

“We’re huge and varied,” Suhaka said. “People still identify with neighborhoods because the homeowner associations are so strong. I do wish there could be more uniform identification for neighborhoods so their people realize we’re all in this together, but I really doubt that could happen.”

Big cities have distinct neighborhoods, such as Elyria Swansea in

Randy Pye, Centennial’s first mayor and a city founder north Denver and Cherry Creek in central Denver, Suhaka noted.

“Littleton has older and newer parts and continually holds events to try and bring people together, but I don’t know how well that’s working,” Suhaka said. “So Centennial will keep holding its events to try to bring people together and maybe, eventually, we’ll succeed.”

A ‘main street’ On a May afternoon, Liz Helwig, 36, was playing with her daughter at deKoevend Park, near Arapahoe Road on South University Boulevard. A resident of northwest Centennial, she characterized the city as a great place in which to raise kids.

“Typically, there’s more space than in Denver,” Helwig said. “The parks and recreation are great.”

But Benjamin Fields, who sat watching kids play sports in that same park, expressed frustration with the city’s image.

“There is no identity — it’s just sporadic,” said Fields, 40, who also lives in west Centennial. “When people ask where I live, I say, `Centennial.’ That could be here or way east … it’s hard when trying to relate to someone.”

Noon thinks keeping Centennial well maintained can set it apart from surrounding suburbs.

“If we can continue to reinvest in our businesses, our shopping centers, in our homes, I think it keeps that level of pride in the community and that level of ‘I want to be there,’ ” Noon said.

One desire residents voiced was for another attraction in the middle of the city — a senior center, a cultural or arts center, or a “Main Street.”

“I think it’s great that Centennial puts on so many events at Centennial Center Park, but it isn’t somewhere people regularly gather who don’t

have children or in the winter,” said Shoshana Howley, who lives in the town’s east end near East Smoky Hill Road. “I think having more of a ‘Main Street USA’ area for events would bring together a wider range of the community. Somewhere with smaller shops, cafes and restaurants that was more walkable, but that isn’t a mall, would be a huge draw.”

Pye would like crowds to be able to come to a “Centennial arts center.”

“We never approached the arts.

We left that to other cities,” Pye said.

“If you’re a citizen of Centennial, you don’t identify Centennial with any kind of arts. And that’s a major part of a city. I’ve always thought we should have a foundation here about arts. I’ve always got some pushback on that because it’s money.”

Noon pointed to the competition, though, in considering such a center.

Parker and Lone Tree both have established performing arts centers, and Greenwood Village has the cultural Curtis Center for the Arts.

Unless the city accepts the need to better brand the city, Pye said, citizens will have a difficult time saying they’re proud to live in Centennial.

“Until the city makes the decision to be proud of the city and brand the city with our logo at (more) entrances and really start talking about that, our identity is tied up to IKEA and United Launch Alliance,” Pye said, referring to Centennial’s high-profile businesses.

But for Noon, Centennial’s parks, outdoor spaces, schools and suburban feel are something to celebrate — as she heard when she was mayor.

“Even people who swore they’d never live in the suburbs, they start having children” and start looking at what Centennial has to offer, Noon said. “And they move in and go, ‘Wow, I never thought I’d like the suburbs.’ ”

Smallcakes Cupcakery and Creamery A shop for the sweet tooth opened May 22 on East Smoky Hill Road in east Centennial, offering custom cakes cupcakes for any occasion.

“I liked the atmosphere in the city and also realized that the community didn’t really have a small-business cupcake and homemade ice cream shop,” said Jennifer Barr, who opened the shop at 5616 S. Gibraltar Way. Barr, who lives in Larkspur, also touted that Smallcakes offers an opportunity for local employment, adding, “While it may be small for now, we have been fortunate enough to find talented individuals to help us.”

The outfit bakes its cupcakes fresh every day, Barr said.

“We do not sell day-old cupcakes. If an opportunity arises, we will donate the leftover cupcakes, after closing the store, to the community, such as businesses, hospitals, etc.,” Barr said. “We take special attention to making sure we provide quality products to the community.”

Jessie’s Smokin’ NOLA Andrea Rayford and her chef husband,

Jessie, started out with a food truck, but they recently reached their goal of opening a brick-and-mortar restaurant when Jessie’s Smokin’ NOLA opened in Centennial at 7422 S. University Blvd.

The Parker couple serves cajun food inspired by Jessie’s upbringing in New Orleans. They’re located near Arapahoe High School.

Peak View Brewing Company As a senior airman in the U.S. Air Force, Sean Peters had some down time while working the gate at Schriever Air Force Base in Colorado, where he passed the time by learning how to make a batch of beer on YouTube, Peak View’s website says. He ended up buying his own equipment and began developing his own brews. He and a friend, Justen Coufal, came together to start Peak View Brewing Company.

“Through hard work and dedication to the craft, we have developed over 180-plus recipes that will be rotating throughout the year,” Peak View’s site says.

The brewery sits at 9672 E. Arapahoe Road in Greenwood Village, a few blocks east of Interstate 25 at South Dayton Street, just outside Centennial.

Outpost Eatery Inspired by the “multicultural flare” in New Mexico and Colorado, owner Fabian Valdez — after serving in the Army for four years — realized his vision of bringing a friendly Army outpost atmosphere to Lone Tree, according to Outpost Eatery’s website.

Wooden Table An Italian restaurant in Greenwood Village, The Wooden Table, closed without prior notice sometime around April.

The eatery was described as upscale and sat at 2500 E. Orchard Road in Greenwood Village. Its location, just outside northwest Centennial along South University Boulevard, was in a shopping center in a heavily residential and affluent area.

38 State Brewing Company The brewery on South Broadway in Littleton announced on its Facebook it would close May 31.

The past eight years have truly been the experience of a lifetime! The good times shared by all, the laughter and award-winning craft beer will all be missed. We were blessed to have such a wonderful staff throughout the years,” 38 State’s announcement said.

The brewery carried on an openmic night that attracted out-oftowners who had just moved to the area, along with artists trying to get booked to play shows, according to a bartender. It sat at 8071 S. Broadway.

South Metro chamber members The South Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce welcomed In-Flow Design Studio and Pauline Fortuna Photography this year as new members.

In-Flow Design Studio, at 6422 S. Quebec St., building #4, in Centennial, is a firm that offers residential design, project management, construction management and project feasibility studies.

Pauline Fortuna has worked in photography for nearly two decades, according to her website.

Volleyball facility in construction Elevation Volleyball Club broke ground April 30 on a new facility in the Dove Valley area of unincorporated Arapahoe County, near central Centennial.

“Our clientele primarily come from athletes in Parker, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree, Castle Rock and Aurora,” said Kevin Snyder, partowner of the club.

The 30,960-square-foot facility at 12987 E. Adam Aircraft Circle, near Centennial Airport, will feature six indoor volleyball courts, office space, a conference room, a kitchen and a mezzanine area, according to an Elevation news release.

Hey kids, life is nice without that device

I

was standing at the crossroads a few years ago. Along came a fellow with a guitar.

Said his name was Robert Johnson and that he had something to sell, but not to me.

I told him, “Me too.”

He gave me a smile and then he played a tune. I found out later it was a song called “Dust My Broom,” which makes no sense grammatically, but it sure sounded good.

After he was through playing, he said, “What are you asking for in exchange?”

I told him I had a strange request.

I said I wanted resistance.

“Resistance to what?”

“Excessive social media usage.”

He said, “Man, what are you talking about?’

QUIET DESPERATION

I told him I wanted mental health.

He said, “You know what that means, don’t you? You’ll have to give up your phone.”

I told him, “I can do it.”

She cites a National Education Association newsletter that labeled the anxiety a “mental health tsunami.”

She said, “Research now points to

smartphone-driven social media as one of the biggest drivers of (student) stress.”

She referred to a South Carolina high school teacher’s classroom experiment that had each student document every smartphone notification they received for one hour.

“One girl got close to 150 Snapchat notifications,” the teacher reported.

Jean Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State, said, “What a lot of teens told me is that social media and their phones feel mandatory.”

An editorial in the American Academy of Pediatrics’ journal stated, “Aberrant and/or excessive social media usage” could contribute to teenage “feelings of isolation, depressive symptoms, and anxiety.”

I have not seen a teenager in public in the past 20 years who wasn’t on the phone, holding a phone, kissing a phone or dancing with a phone.

A school in Maine, Belfast Area High, tried an experiment of its own that failed miserably.

No cellphones for a single day.

I got what I wanted at the crossroads. My mental health seems fine.

All I know is I don’t have a speck of anxiety when I realize I have left home without my phone.

Keep yourself humble to avoid a stumble

ne of my favorite things to see is a humble winner. Not only a humble winner, but also a humble leader who willingly shares the victory and gives credit to the team around them, their friend, or a family member. In a world where outrageous behavior seems to garner the most attention, I still try and purposely find examples of those humble winners out there who let their actions and results speak for themselves and show gratitude and appreciation for those who have helped along the way.

Now I love entertaining and exciting events. It’s good to see people fired up about their achievements and success. As a matter of fact, sometimes those feats are worthy of our applause.

The walk-off home run, the hole in one, the artist and song we love winning the Grammy, the movie we enjoyed so much winning the Oscar, the salesperson on our team who just closed a massive opportunity and so many other examples. I love it, I applaud it, and I appreciate it.

What I appreciate more, however, is when the athlete thanks Columnists & Guest Commentaries

their teammates and coaching staff or acknowledges their family that has supported them along the way.

The celebrity WINNING who receives WORDS their award on stage and gives thanks to God, their family, and their co-stars.

The golfer who tips their hat, picks up their ball, and moves on to the next Michael Norton hole.

When things seem to be going really well, maybe even when things are going fantastic for us personally or professionally, it becomes easy for us to get caught up in our own success. Adoration and praise go right to our head, and we forget our humility.

Conversely, when things are tough and going bad, we could become susceptible to blaming others, events beyond our control, and conditions for our loss. We hate losing so much that our SEE NORTON, P13

After the funeral — a look at being ready FINANCIAL STRATEGIES

he cause of death was influenza.

For those of you following the story of my father-in-law, he spent nine weeks in the hospital due to the flu. While it is not unusual for a 90-year old to pass away, these circumstances were bizarre to experience.

First the flu, then a fall, then complications with swallowing, and a myriad of everything that could go wrong, did.

Fortunately, Dad was lucid for several days during these events. While no one ever spoke about the fact he would never go home again, we kind of talked around the subject. “Hey Dad, do you still have the safe deposit box?” “Whatever happened to Grandma’s Hummels?” “Did I see a safe in the basement?

Do you remember the combination?” It was a little private investigating along with ice chips and IVs. Everyone knew he was not going home except him, so it was a bit awkward.

Luckily, he had made his funeral arrangements when his wife died and

most decisions around the ceremony and burial were in place.

Except, don’t ever request a “duplicate of my wife’s arrangements” unless you want a pink lining in your casket. Luckily, we caught that one.

We were in no hurry to dig into the will Patricia Kummer and estate documents, but it turned out that cleaning out the house was one of the best ways to mourn. All of the kids and grandkids were together working. We were laughing at old pictures and picking out mementos.

As we came across financial statements, we quickly saw he had beneficiaries listed on everything and there would be no need to open an estate or go through probate. Another toast to Dad! A death in the family reminds us that

their commission with confidence and humbleness. Confident humbleness is indeed a character trait is appreciated by most, and a trait that comes more easily to some, and for others takes a bit of practice and effort.

In today’s “me first” society, the race for “likes” and “followers,” the humble winner and the humble leader have learned that it’s “we first,” a race that we run together, and that their followers and fans are the encouragers who inspire them to greatness.

So how about you? When you win or lose, do you accept both humbly? If so, congratulations as I am confident that you are probably winning more than you are losing.

Well the more we weave a humble nature into our winning and leading, the more we will win, and we will build a loyal following of people who want to work with us or become a part of our team.

Exciting entertainment and outrageous events are awesome and fun.

And they become even more incredible when the team, people, or person receive their trophy, their award, or

It might help to be enormously unpopular in the first place.

I do email all over the place, respond to every column comment I receive, and appreciate all of the offers from wealthy potentates and lonely Russian women.

Don’t keep old, confidential papers around for someone to try and determine if it is still valid or not.

• Consider putting a family member

on the car title.

• Identify any collectibles so they don’t end up in the garage sale.

• Leave a list of passwords, safe combinations, where extra keys are, etc.

For those of you who have a trustbased estate plan, make sure everything you wish to pass correctly is either titled in the name of your trust or lists the trust or individuals as beneficiary.

Then spend as much quality time with your loved ones as you can. You can create a legacy of family values just by sharing stories and time together.

These will be the most precious things you leave behind.

he day before the Continental Congress’ adoption of the Declaration of Independence, John Adams wrote a letter to his wife on July 3, 1776 about how he hoped succeeding generations would celebrate Independence Day. “It ought to be commemorated as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty,” the letter, on the Massachusetts Historical Society’s website, reads.

“It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”

Adams might be proud to see how the Denver metro area is following through on his exhortation, with fireworks lighting up the sky, sporting events, kid festivities and more.

FIREWORKS SAFETY Fireworks laws vary throughout each city, so if you’re planning on having your own fireworks show, make sure to check your local laws. Here are some tips about how to be safe with fireworks, courtesy of the National Safety Council, an organization that works to eliminate preventable deaths.

• Don’t use fireworks when impaired from drugs or alcohol.

• Do not let young children handle fireworks.

If older children use them, they should be under adult supervision.

• Use fireworks away from people, houses and flammable material.

• Keep water nearby to extinguish fireworks that don’t go off or if a fire starts.

• Do not light fireworks inside.

Ringing in summer Summer Kickoff brings music, public officials, family-filled crowd

Food trucks, free live music and a crowded park at sunset: It started to look like summer in Centennial at the city’s annual Summer Kickoff event.

At Centennial Center Park, The King Stan Band, a Colorado rhythm and blues outfit, kicked off the June 14 show. The Beverly Belles, a vocal group inspired by The Andrews Sisters and 1960s girl groups, followed with upbeat tunes and some patriotic numbers.

Anthony Ramos, 30, lives in the south Denver area and came to the event for the first time that day.

“It’s super family-friendly and dogfriendly,” said Ramos, who came with his 1 1/2-year old dog. It “lets single guys like myself explore more and be part of the community.”

Theme of college journal leaves room for creativity Progenitor for 2019 is available at two locations on campus

In spring semester, Arapahoe Community College students with an inclination toward writing, graphics and publishing enroll in English 231, where they learn much by compiling, designing and publishing the new issue of Progenitor, a classy, awardwinning art/ literary journal, issued annually.

“Progenitor,” a noun, is defined on the first page as “a person that originates a cultural or intellectual movement; a biologically ancestral form.”

Copies of the 2019 issue are free and can be found at Colorado Gallery of the Arts and in the college library, both on the main ACC campus at 5900 S. Santa Fe Drive, Littleton.

Nine students and three faculty members created the 2019 edition from a large number of submissions received from writers who ranged from current ACC students to writers from the local area and across the nation — to an Australian poet and teacher in Queensland.

Students read submissions and selected the variety of art, nonfiction, poetry and fiction that appear within

An introductory statement by editor Mary Innerst says: “This year’s theme of `Theatre’ evolved from a visual subject in the early stages of the design phase into our literary theme for the entire issue. This gave us a wide umbrella to work under. We were able to capture a broad array of experiences, identities, themes and forms and to explore the plethora of work we received on quality, free from a restricting theme ... All the world’s a stage and together, we are the cast who performs upon it …”

Thirty-six entries were selected for publication and the project was wrangled by Jamey Trotter of the English Department, John Hall of the Graphic Design program and Trish Sangelo, a photographer/teacher who directs the Colorado Gallery of the Arts.

Trotter wrote a touching dedication to retired English professor Chris Ransick, who led the Progenitor project for a number of earlier years and

Each year, ACC holds a literary contest and both the nonfiction and fiction sections are led by a recent winner.

In nonfiction, the reader finds Renata Dolz’s “In a Teacher’s Shoes,” an account of her hectic day as a substitute teacher at Denver’s Dora Moore School, with a cumulative picture of the students she meets … “Could I handle that situation with the grace

and sympathy she did?” one wonders.

It won in the literary contest at ACC. “El Gato” by Kate Niles of Durango, also a winner, tells of a sickly, hungry neighborhood cat, whose owner is in the hospital … It also tells of a neighborhood and some of the folks who live on the block and their interactions — a particularly nice piece and tied well into the theatre theme of the issue. Players of all sorts live in a neighborhood “known to real estate salespeople as Tupperware Flats.”

Illustrations include nicely designed/composed art photographs such as Holly Giannaula’s glowing “Busy,” a backlit speckled flower with a very busy bee, and Gillian Davenport’s mysterious portrait study, “Divine Maternal.” Who is that woman, anyway??? (Another story needed!)

Funding for Progenitor is provided by the English Department at ACC and presumably a copy has begun its journey into the annual awards circuit by now. We will await news with interest — this is probably the most handsome issue of the journal yet!

Readers are advised to stop by the Littleton campus to pick one up.

The Bible Speaks – suffering Why do people suffer? Why do they lose their homes to floods, their loved ones to shooters, their health to disease and their fortunes to charlatans? Just how are we to deal with such suffering?

We suffer because we live in a sin contaminated world. But suffering should teach us some things. When we suffer we learn to depend on God’s grace (2 Cor 12:9), to commit ourselves to God’s care (1 Pet 4:19), to persevere (Rom 5:3), to have sympathy for others who suffer (2 Cor 1:4) & to develop patience (James 1:3). We learn that Christ suffered in life as an example for us to follow (1 Pet 2:21). We learn that He suffered in death on the cross to make us righteous (1 Pet 3:18).

Summer break may be in full swing, but Littleton and Cherry Creek school districts have a few recent announcements to keep you up to date. Here’s a roundup of what’s happening: Cherry Creek School District • Krithik Ramesh, a junior at Cherry Creek High School, won first place and $75,000 in the Intel Science and Engineering Fair by developing a system to help spinal surgeons.

• CCSD’s Extended Childhood Services program offers full-day summer camps between June and August. Students can enjoy age-appropriate opportunities, including field trips, guest speakers, crafts, games, outdoor play and more. See more information at www.cherrycreekschools.org/Page/1740.

• CCSD offers free summer meals to students 18 and younger from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekdays between May 29 and July 26 at Overland High School, Horizon Community Middle School and Meadow Point Elementary. Adults can purchase a meal for $4.

• AP Boot Camp on Aug. 1 will give students information to build confidence about expectations and how to be successful in an Advanced Placement class. The program is available to students pre-registered in a Cherry Creek High School AP course for the 2019-20 school year.

Lori VanNoy-Adams, of Centennial, was crowned queen at the Ms. Colorado Senior America Pageant, which was May 25 at the PACE Theatre in Parker.

This year marked the 25th anniversary of the pageant, created to honor women ages 60 and older.

“I can finally — finally — take a full breath,” VanNoy-Adams said about turning 60. “It has been glorious. I have been tendered and seasoned by time and find myself with a whole new level of appreciation and love for those around me.”

This year’s theme, “Reach for the Stars, 25 Years of Elegance,” celebrated the wealth of beauty, talent and experience that senior women share with their communities and each other.

VanNoy-Adams was born on a Wyoming ranch and attended college in Utah on a full academic scholarship.

The mother of two became a flight attendant, travel agent and oil worker.

She performed a real-to-life comedy routine, impressing judges James Knapp, Scottie Iverson, Peggy Keller and Robert Nardozza.

It outlined a senior woman, played by Annette Germinario, who was reluctant to be involved in a pageant and found she had friends to encourage her.

The pageant is a charitable organization and Cameo Club, its supporting arm, performs at various venues throughout the Denver Metro Area.

Centennial seniors brew Golden Age beer Sales of German-style lager to help raise money, awareness for Alzheimer’s disease STAFF REPORT

A group of seniors at Peakview Assisted Living and Memory Care in Centennial created a German-style lager beer as part of a promotion to raise awareness and money for Alzheimer’s research.

According to a news release, Jean and Michele Verrier, owners of Pilothouse Brewing Co. in Aurora, collaborated with the seniors from Peakview to develop Golden Age, the new signature brew.

“A group of our residents had the unique and very enjoyable opportunity to work with the team

at Pilothouse and create their own German-style lager beer they’ve named `Golden Age,’ ” Kevin Otterness, sales director at Peakview Assisted Living and Memory Care, said in the news release. “Everyone here at Peakview and Pilothouse is super excited about this event and the cause behind it.”

Beyond creating a new summertime refreshment, the collaboration will direct a portion of the sales of the beer throughout the summer to the Colorado Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.

“We really enjoyed working with the residents of Peakview in brewing `Golden Age,’ a German-style Munich Helles, to benefit and support the Alzheimer’s Association,” the Verriers said in the release. “The residents of Peakview are both delightful and engaging to work with and have many wonderful stories to tell.”

Rich Karlis had just wrapped up his second season as a kicker for the Denver Broncos, and he was trying to figure out what to do with his free time. When he learned about Family Tree — a nonprofit headquartered in Jefferson County that works with people affected by child abuse, domestic violence and homelessness — he had his answer.

“I was fortunate enough to meet some really special people at Family Tree and quickly discovered where I can use the visibility of the Denver Broncos to raise awareness around domestic violence and child abuse,” said Karlis, who played for the Broncos for seven years until after the 1988 season.

During his 1984 season, Karlis’s field goals meant more than just points for his team: For every successsful field goal, he made a donation to Family Tree.

Now, Karlis and Family Tree are asking the community to support the nonprofit through the #CountYour-

Family Tree is challenging the community to recognize comforts through the hashtag, make a small donation and challenge five others to do the same. Comforts can be little things from being able to turn on a light to having a vehicle to drive — things that some of Family Tree’s clients can’t do.

The #CountYourComforts campaign is meant to show that those impacted by child abuse, domestic violence and homelessness don’t have comforts that are basic needs.

“I didn’t know what we were going to do, but I knew failure wasn’t an option,” Adams said. “The House of Hope was a lifesaver for the girls and I.”

Fire muster fans check out old, new gear

ide-eyed youngsters thronged Arapahoe Community College in Littleton on June 15, enthusiastically exploring dozens of vintage and active-duty fire trucks and emergency vehicles at the annual Fire Muster.

Organized by the Mile High Hook and Ladder vintage fire truck club and sponsored by Schomp Automotive, the annual event began with a fire truck parade down Main Street, and wound up at ACC, where kids took fire truck rides, danced in the spray of fire hoses and cranked the sirens on old-time trucks.

South Metro Fire Rescue — which now provides service to Littleton, as well as Centennial, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree and other nearby areas — brought numerous vehicles, including massive ladder trucks.

The event is one of the high points of the year for firefighters and their fans alike, said South Metro Fire Chief Bob Baker.

“Littleton is the best little town ever, and we just have so much fun getting out here with kids and showing them what we do,” Baker said.

“Who knows? Maybe some of these kids will get the bug and want to grow up to be firefighters.”

As a veteran of the Vietnam War, Jim Topkoff has met many who, after serving in the war, “don’t want anything to do with it.”

“There are thousands who just felt so neglected and unappreciated when they came back,” said Topkoff, who served in the Navy from 1962 to 1966.

That’s why, for him, the Wall that Heals is so important: “It’s an opportunity to be a part of the wall and start to heal those wounds.”

The Wall that Heals — a three-quarter-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. — will come to Arvada’s Faith Bible Chapel from June 20-23.

Seven-and-a-half feet tall, 375 feet wide and inscribed with the names of more than 58,000 service members who died in the war, the exhibit is free to the public and open 24 hours a day.

“The region is incredibly military-friendly,” said Tim Tetz, outreach director with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, “and the folks with the VVA chapter and the church really put together an incredible committee.”

Volunteers running the exhibit have gone above and

beyond to prepare, he said, with some, including chapter board member Topkoff, visiting the wall when it was up in other states.

“They have gone out of their way to make sure they do this right,” Tetz said.

A police escort, expected to include more than 100 motorcyclists, will lead the wall into town on June 18, traveling eastward on 64th Avenue before turning right on Ward Road and right on 63rd Avenue. City and church representatives will hand out flags

to those standing at 63rd and Ward to welcome the exhibit.

Twenty-five volunteers will set up June 19 at the church, 6250 Wright St., with a soft opening taking place at 6 p.m.

The official opening takes place June 20 at 6 p.m., and the exhibit will stay in Arvada until 5 p.m. on June 23.

“It’s just absolutely breathtaking,” Topkoff said, adding the wall looks particularly beautiful at night when illuminated by LED lights.

Additionally, visitors can view objects that individuals

have left behind at the wall in D.C. while the exhibit is in town.

“Anyone is more than welcome to participate,” Topkoff said. “It’s a time to reflect and remember those fallen soldiers.”

Tetz echoed that sentiment, encouraging anyone — veterans, family members, those who have seen the D.C. wall and those who haven’t — to visit.

“This wall is special because of how closely it resembles the wall in D.C., and because it’s in your community,” he said.

“You will be blown away by how beautiful it is.”

Decorated swimmer, at 49, looks to keep kicking National champion from Centennial talks lifelong benefits of sport

Six years ago, Bob Garland took his kids to swim lessons at a local recreation center like usual. A program caught his eye: a “Weigh and Win” challenge that paid a small amount of money to people who try to lose weight.

He started the program and, at 44, learned he was overweight and needed to start working out.

Once a swimmer at Iowa State University, he hadn’t trained in the water in 23 years.

“Back then, there was not really the encouragement to swim beyond that. Maybe if you were looking at the Olympics or something,” said Garland, an architect who works at the Denver Tech Center. “So I didn’t need to exercise for a few years. And then, life — you get married, you have kids … I just never really thought about it.”

Now, he’s a national champion swimmer multiple times over in his age group, and he’s not looking back, inspired by swimmers in age groups older than his.

“You don’t question whether you can — you just continue on that path as well,” said Garland, who lives in Centennial. “It’s healthy. Straight up, it is better physically, mentally and across the board. It’s something you can pass onto the kids as well, and they can know they can compete when they’re older, too.”

‘Am I going to epically fail?’

Determined to lose 20 pounds, Garland started swimming nights at Club Greenwood — once known as Greenwood Athletic Club, just about a mile from his home, eventually joining

“Weight started coming off, and I felt like I was starting to build muscle,” Garland said. “Other swimmers said I ought to compete, so I competed in the master’s state meet in Grand Junction in 2014 — my first big meet.”

For Garland, diving back in was a homecoming. Raised in a family of six siblings and a mother who loved the pool, Garland started swimming around age 6 and developed into a year-round swimmer.

“It turned into a way to pay for college,” Garland said. “When I started, I was a walk-on and didn’t have a scholarship. Then, my first year, coach gave me room and board, rewarding me for my efforts. Second year, the coach upped that to a half scholarship. That helped my education because I have a five-year architecture degree.”

More than two decades later, at his first big masters meet, he faced familiar feelings of anxiety, adrenaline, anticipation. And he grappled with questions of possible failure and aging’s slowing effect on the body.

“Your brain says, ‘I’m going to move

Quebec St. fast, ‘but your body doesn’t necessarily do that … then you have to get used to hurting,” Garland laughed. “As you age, you’re always concerned like, `Oh, this one’s going to hurt.’”

‘It’s a lifelong sport’ Garland wasn’t alone, though. His wife, Crystal, joined in the fun.

“He was my inspiration,” said Crystal, who also swam competitively in college. “It’s nice to know it’s a lifelong sport.”

Swimming brought the couple together — Crystal grew up with two sisters and a brother who swam yearround. She got a swimming scholarship at Iowa State, where she met Bob. The Littleton High School alumna moved back to Colorado after college, and Garland came with her.

Now, they integrate swimming into their daily lives. Garland fits swimming in over lunch or on early mornings, and his wife works at Club Greenwood as director of aquatics.

Their three sons — ages 16, 14 and 11 — also all swim competitively in high

school and summer programs.

“They’re finding the passion,” Crystal said, “and the journey for them is just starting.”

‘Applies to anything in life’ This spring, Garland won the national championship in the 1,000-yard freestyle for his 45 to 49 age group. He generally finishes in the top five in most events. A photo of Garland with several medals around his neck sits in his wife’s office, not far from a photo of Olympic swimmer Missy Franklin, who grew up in Centennial, posing with the couple’s kids.

And when he competes, he’s motivated by the 90-year-olds still racing, a goal he plans on reaching.

“However you approach anything in life, it’s that much better,” Garland said. “It’s not an instant reward sport.

And I think you recognize that, you have to put in the time, you have to focus on the right things and, eventually, it’ll reward you. And you’ll have your moments and you can apply that to everything in life.”

‘Opponents fear and respect her’ Audrey Weiss is taking her skills to Notre Dame

Arapahoe High School soccer player Audrey Weiss is one of those players who can never move around much without being marked by an opponent or two.

She always seemed to make things happen for the Warriors during her senior season and managed the team’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Grandview in the Class 5A state championship game in May. Weiss, who is headed to play at Notre Dame, is the 2019 Colorado Community Media South Metro Girls Soccer Player of the Year.

“Audrey is incredibly talented,” said Arapahoe coach Mark Hampshire. “It has been clear that opponents fear and respect her.

“She recovered from ACL surgery her freshman year, came back in the state championship game her sophomore year and then back against in 2019. She has the ability to beat players one on one, serve and the whole package.

Katie Collins was hard to keep off the lacrosse field.

The Cherry Creek senior was a midfielder who was a standout on both offense and defense.

She was named the 2019 Colorado Community Media South Metro Girls Lacrosse Player of the Year.

“She was our only two-way midfielder,” said Creek coach Bailey Zerr. “She is an incredible athlete and is super speedy. She will be a Division I college player at Oregon, which says a lot.”

Collins, who was the US Lacrosse Magazine’s Player of the Month for April for the west section after collecting 16 goals and three assists in the Bruins’ first four games, finished the season with 55 goals and six assists for 61 points.

College baseball opening doors for Colorado athletes

I

t’s been slow — like an off-speed changeup — for people to realize, but big-time college baseball is no longer a long shot for players who participate in Colorado high school baseball.

Arkansas sophomore catcher Casey Opitz, who played at Heritage High School in Littleton, made his second straight trip last weekend to Omaha, Nebraska for the 2019 College World Series.

“Absolutely, Colorado has college baseball players,” said Opitz.

“Talent comes from all over. You have OVERTIME to work hard for it.

They will find you, that’s their job.

“You have to put in the effort.

Depending on how you play, a big school will find you. If they don’t find you right away, Jim Benton you can go to a smaller school and they will find you there. No matter where you are from, they will find you.”

Casey Opitz’s older brother Jeff, manager of the Colorado Rockies’ Grand Junction Rookie League team who played for Nebraska as a freshman in the 2005 College World Series, agrees that Colorado does produce Division I baseball players.

“I’ve said that for years,” said Jeff Opitz. “There is a lot of good talent in Colorado, a lot of good homegrown talent. There are always some elite players.”

Casey Opitz was one of three former area high school players on rosters of College World Series teams.

Matthew Schmitz, a senior at Michigan who transferred from Cypress College, is a reserve first baseman who played in 14 games this season and hit .167 for the Wolverines. He is a former Regis Jesuit player who resides in Parker.

Tanner O’Tremba, a freshman who played at Cherry Creek, is a Texas Tech outfielder who played in 31 games prior to the World Series and hit .267 with 20 runs batted in. He delivered a key double in an 8-6 Super Regional win over Oklahoma State on June 9 and had seven RBIs in an early-season game against Kentucky.

He caught a Southeast Conference-leading 21 base runners attempting to steal.

He headed to Omaha with a .246 batting average after going 4-for9 with five RBIs in three games against Ole Miss in the Super Regional.

A few of the adjustments from high school to college baseball included stronger, faster players and more games.

“You really have to be able to take care of yourself — it’s such a long season,” said Casey Opitz.

“The first adjustment is how much baseball you play on a daily basis. I wouldn’t call it a job, it’s still fun.

“This year figuring out what works for me and what I need to work on was an improvement. It was easier on the catching part to come in and work with guys and figure out what I can do for them.

“It is unbelievable to be a part

of some of the best teams in college baseball at the College World Series. It is great to have a bunch of family out here and it’s cool to come back here to see all them and play in front of them again.”

Time to celebrate Golden High School graduate Lindsay Horan scored in the 32nd minute and Mallory Pugh who played at Mountain Vista tallied in the 85th minute in the USA women’s soccer team’s record-breaking 13-0 World Cup win over Thailand on June 11.

However, most of the attention was centered on celebrations by the Americans after each goal in the rout, which has coach Jill Ellis defending her players.

I’m the first to admit I don’t like to see exaggerated celebrations after touchdowns, home runs, goals, winning 50-foot putts or whatever. Celebrate but don’t make it a jamboree.

However, the social media criticism directed at the American women is undeserved.

First of all, this was a World Cup match in the ultimate international tournament and goals should be celebrated. Plus, there is the goal differential, which is so important and a reason why teams can’t afford to let up on any opponent.

I have watched many tournaments in the past few years where that one additional goal during the second match would have made a difference in advancing.

What should be noted are the actions by the Americans toward the disappointed Thai players after the match.

Thai coach Nuengruethai Sathongwien thanked the Americans who encouraged her overmatched players to keep fighting and keep their heads up.

Soccer Hall of Famer Whitney (Hollis) Longmeir, a Highlands Ranch resident and graduate of Columbine High School, was one of five members of the 1996-99 women’s soccer team who were inducted into the Santa Clara University Hall of Fame.

Longmeir, a midfielder who had 15 goals and 11 assists in the 87 career games in which she played, was a member of teams that went 89-9-4 and outscored their opponents 10898 in four seasons.

“She was a huge part of our attack against tough defenders,” added Zerr. “And absolutely she could play defense. She was on the draw circle and got a lot of ground balls.”

Collins scored in every game this season and had six in one game against Dakota Ridge. She ended her career with a 38-game scoring streak. The last game she didn’t get a goal came on May 24, 2017 in an 8-5 loss to Colorado Academy.

In three seasons on the Bruins’ varsity, Collins had 147 goals, 19 assists and 166 points and a .590 shooting percentage.

10 ways to love your brain STAFF REPORT

This June, during Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, the Alzheimer’s Association is hoping to raise awareness of this devastating disease by sharing its list of 10 ways to love your brain.

Nearly 6 million people in the United States, including 73,000 Coloradans, are living with Alzheimer’s disease, according to a news release.

The sixth-leading cause of death and the only leading disease without a prevention, treatment or cure, Alzheimer’s kills more Americans every year than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.

“Research is still evolving, but evidence is strong that people can reduce their risk of cognitive decline by making key lifestyle changes,” Amelia Schafer, executive director of the Colorado Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, said in the release. “Based on this research, we have developed ‘10 Ways to Love Your Brain,’ a collection of tips that can reduce the risk of cognitive decline.”

According to the release, these habits will help achieve maximum benefits for the brain and body: Break a sweat: Engage in regular cardiovascular exercise that elevates your heart rate and increases blood flow to the brain and body. Several studies have found an association between physical activity and reduced risk of cognitive decline.

Hit the books: Formal education in any stage of life will help reduce your risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

Butt out: Evidence shows that smoking increases risk of cognitive decline. Quitting smoking can reduce that risk to levels

comparable to those who have not smoked.

Follow your heart: Evidence shows that risk factors for cardiovascular disease and stroke — obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes — negatively impact your cognitive health.

Heads up: Brain injury can raise risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Wear a seat belt, use a helmet when playing contact sports or riding a bike, and take steps to prevent falls.

Fuel up right: Eat a healthy and balanced diet that is lower in fat and higher in vegetables and fruit to help reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Although research on diet and cognitive function is limited, certain diets may contribute to risk reduction.

Catch some ZZZs: Not getting enough sleep due to conditions like insomnia or sleep apnea may result in problems with memory and thinking.

Take care of your mental health: Some studies link a history of depression with increased risk of cognitive decline, so seek medical treatment if you have symptoms of depression, anxiety or other mental health concerns. Also, try to manage stress.

Stump yourself: Challenge and activate your mind. Build a piece of furniture. Complete a jigsaw puzzle. Do something artistic.

Play games, such as bridge, that make you think strategically. Challenging your mind may have short- and longterm benefits for your brain.

Buddy up: Staying socially engaged may support brain health. Pursue social activities that are meaningful. Find ways to be part of your community. If you love animals, consider volunteering at a local shelter. If you enjoy singing, join a local choir. Or share activities with friends and family.
