IN THEIR BUSINESS Mici Handcrafted Italian opens in Parker Mici Handcrafted Italian, a family-owned, fast-casual chain in Denver, has opened its sixth location. The newest location is in Parker at 11290 Twenty Mile Road, in the Parker Valley Center.

The menu features family-recipe pastas, handcrafted pizzas, salads and more, all available for dine-in, carryout, catering and delivery.

t a local park on a spring day, some kids were planning cities.

At the second annual Arapahoe County Public Works Play Date, families got more acquainted with how public works staff contribute to their communities.

Kids got to jump in the driver’s seat of road-and-bridge trucks, learn crosswalk safety, plan an imaginary city and engage in other activities. More than 500 came to the event June 7 at Dove Valley Regional Park in the Centennial area.

“Not only the kids but the parents (are) seeing what public works does,” said Bryan Weimer, the county’s director of public works and development.

The office oversees land development, transportation infrastructure and even animal control, among other duties.

“What’s important is these professionals do work day in and day out and don’t really get noticed,” Weimer said.

“This allows us to share that with the public.”

Cost of police force an ‘eye opener’ for council Centennial officials tepid at prospect of separating from sheriff’s office

On the heels of a study showing that creating a Centennial police department would saddle the city with tens of millions in new costs, city councilmembers appeared to have little appetite for cutting ties with the Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office — at least for now.

“It was an eye opener for me as a councilperson to see these numbers,” Councilmember Ron Weidmann said at the council’s June 3 meeting.

The study, submitted by former Arapahoe County Sheriff David Walcher to the City of Centennial, examined how feasible it would be for the city to stop receiving law enforcement service from the sheriff ’s office.

In the short term, the study provides an estimate of how much more the city would spend on a police department instead of the sheriff ’s office from the year 2021 through 2025. Together with the 2020 start-up costs, the total through 2025 would be $29 million in additional costs, the study says.

In its June 3 presentation on the study, the city cited possible start-up expenses in 2020 that would put the total additional costs close to $50 million

for that same number of years. Elisha Thomas, Centennial’s deputy city manager, emphasized that estimating costs is “not an exact science at this point.”

Centennial pays a large portion of its budget to the sheriff’s office, which also provides law enforcement service for unincorporated Arapahoe County areas. The city in its 2019 budget allocated $29 million for the sheriff’s office, to

receive the service that it currently does.

Walcher has not responded for comment on the study.

‘Worthy conversation’ In light of the $60,000 study, no councilmember explicitly said the city should go forward with transitioning away from the sheriff ’s office. Several members, though, voiced support for

gathering public input on the possibility of doing so in the future.

The council should “study how long it would take us as a city to set aside this money to avoid some of this huge debt we might have to take on,” Councilmember Candace Moon said.

“That’s been one of our principles as a city, to remain debt-free.”

The city previously conducted an assessment of its agreement with the sheriff ’s office for service, but it didn’t carry out a full study to compare the sheriff ’s office model to that of running a city police department.

“I want to emphasize that this is the first deep dive the city has ever done on really evaluating the cost of establishing its own police department,” Councilmember Mike Sutherland said, adding that the study can inform the current council and future councils. “That, in and of itself, has a lot of value to the city. I think doing the study was money well spent.”

Mayor Stephanie Piko was the most vocal councilmember in suggesting the city should hear public input on whether Centennial should make changes to the service it receives.

“It’s obvious that, not only in the environment we are in today, but (with) the increase in population across the Front Range, that cost is going to go up” whether the city continues with the sheriff ’s office or forms its own police force, Piko said.

The city could hold small focus groups, a town hall or other forms of public outreach, Piko said, because “I think it’s a worthy conversation to keep going.”

While councilmembers gave comments during the discussion, the meeting did not include a formal vote on planning public input. Piko suggested city staff could bring information in late summer or early fall on how best to gather input.

Councilmember Kathy Turley was not present at the meeting.

‘City remains satisfied’ The study on the feasibility of a police department came about after leadership at the sheriff ’s office changed following the November election.

That’s when Democrat Tyler Brown took the sheriff ’s seat from Walcher, a Republican with more than three decades of law enforcement experience. Brown has worked as an officer in Northglenn, Aurora Public Schools and the small Town of Mountain View near Interstate 70 and Sheridan Boulevard.

The city has received more questions about its law enforcement service since the election, Centennial spokeswoman Allison Wittern said in February.

Citizens had asked about the city’s model of law enforcement periodically before the election, too, and the city hasn’t decided to create a police department, Wittern has said. Brown has not made any policy decisions or other moves as sheriff that Centennial city staff or councilmembers have found objectionable, or that citizens have complained about to the city, Wittern said.

It’s expected that a large number of Arapahoe County deputies would need to transition to a Centennial police department if it were formed.

“We don’t know who’s going to want to stay, who’s going to want to go,” City Manager Matt Sturgeon said during the meeting. “They’ve given a lot to the citizens of Centennial, and we have to think about that in any kind of transition.”

In a news release about the study, the city said it “remains satisfied with the work of the sheriff ’s office and appreciates the dedication of the women and men serving the City of Centennial.”

“I’m very confident that this current model delivers law enforcement services at a value you cannot get should you bring this in-house,” said Sturgeon, who called the sheriff ’s office’s service exceptional, during the meeting. “But you always have to look at what quality of service you’re getting” and whether it meets citizens’ expectations.

‘Grounded in local control’ Some minor changes have already been made to the contract, which is called an inter-governmental agreement, between the city and sheriff ’s office.

On May 20, the city council approved a change that reduced the contract’s term to five years, starting Jan. 1, 2018, rather than 10 years, with the possibility to renew for another five-year term unless either the city or county gives a one-year notice that it will not renew. The Arapahoe County Board of Commissioners approved the contract May 21.

Any transition to a different law enforcement model by Centennial should involve cooperative planning and an ideal outcome for both

parties, a city staff summary says.

“The language changes recognize that the city was formed on the promise of and is grounded in local control,” the summary read. “While a change in the service delivery model has not been directed by the current council, a future council may choose to move in this direction based on community feedback.”

The amended contract requires the sheriff ’s office to form a City Public Safety Advisory Group composed of at least eight city residents and business representatives, which will meet at least quarterly to advise the sheriff ’s office about concerns with items such as levels of service, budget and community safety programs.

‘We did our part’ Ruth Mullis, WWII-era ‘Rosie the Riveter,’ hopes to meet others

There isn’t much time left to get to know someone like Ruth Mullis.

Mullis, 96, is one of a dwindling number of “Rosies,” named for Rosie the Riveter — women who stepped into men’s roles in labor and business during World War II. In years past, Mullis has attended annual American Rosie the Riveter Association (ARRA) reunions, but health issues kept her home from this year’s convention in Iowa. With much of her generation fading into history, she’s hoping to meet some of her remaining sisters from the home front.

“People are starting to forget about us,” Mullis said from her Littleton home. “Before the war, women could be teachers, secretaries, nurses or housewives. But now, we’ve got women CEOs. We were part of that change.

We proved our capabilities. We were some of the first to wear pants, for heaven’s sake.”

Rosies were a vital part of the American war effort, said ARRA President Donnaleen Lanktree.

“They did it because they needed to do it,” Lanktree said. “Without them,

winning the war would have been far more difficult. Many felt a sense of duty to the country, and to do what they could to bring their men home.

Others did it to secure an income if their husbands were killed.”

There were perhaps millions of Rosies, Lanktree said, who produced

Rosies possess a special spirit and gumption, Lanktree said: “I never met a Rosie I didn’t like.”

Ruth’s story Mullis was born in 1923 in Michigan, and in the early years of the Great Depression, her father’s slew of respiratory diseases sent the family south in search of warmer weather.

Mullis, her parents and two brothers wound up living in the woods outside Orlando, Florida, where they slept on planks laid through the windows of their Model A Ford to keep them off the ground.

“I don’t like to talk about that time much,” Mullis said. “We ate what we could. We trapped rabbits. I was anemic.”

Eventually they moved in with relatives in Miami, and life steadied. In high school, Mullis met Ted Johnson, the man she would marry.

Swift water is safety focus as snowpack melts Rescuers offer words of caution to Coloradans in search of recreation

Rachel Kohler loves rivers.

“Playing in rivers can be a ton of fun,” she said, “as long as you’re doing it with full knowledge of the risks — and you have a safety plan in place.”

For her profession, Kohler is an engineer with West Metro Fire Rescue.

But for recreation, she is a river fishing guide. Though experienced in river activities and knowledgeable about safety precautions, Kohler joined many other professional firefighters across the state this year in earning a swift water rescue certification.

“Each year, we have more and more people recreating in our rivers and lakes,” said Chris Dinges, a fire engineer with the Westminster Fire Department. “It’s imperative to keep our skills sharp so that we’re capable of responding when needed.”

Rescue crews are especially concerned with water safety this year because heavier-than-average snowfall last winter means more runoff is expected.

“There’s a natural allure to moving water,” said Jeff Steinhoff, operations captain and wildland coordinator

for the Golden Fire Department. He is a hobbyist kayaker and has about 17 years’ experience with the department’s swift water rescue team. “It can look pretty inviting (and) it’s refreshing. But it’s dangerous. Swift water rescue is the most dangerous thing I do as a firefighter.”

Although usually associated with rivers, swift water can be any form of moving water. This includes lakes, reservoirs and flooded areas.

“Even slow-moving water can cause a fatality,” said Robert Baker, a firefighter with South Metro Fire Rescue who is an instructor for the department’s Dive Team, which includes swift water rescue.

Use a personal flotation device, also known as a life jacket or vest, anytime you’re going to be near the water, Baker said. Especially children, he added.

“They’re not going to like it at first,”

Baker said, “but it’s better to be safe than sorry.”

People often don’t realize how cold Colorado’s natural bodies of water are, Steinhoff said. When a person is cold, movements can be slowed and immediate reactions delayed, making self-rescue even more difficult, he added.

“Shivering is the first sign of hypothermia,” Steinhoff said. “Make sure to get out of the water every once in a while, to let your body warm up. Wrap up in a dry towel or put dry clothes on.

The key is to dry off.”

Thermo-protection, also known as a wet suit, is recommended for anyone expecting to participate in water activities for a prolonged period of time, Steinhoff added.

Another hazard not often associated with swift water are floods, said Dave Dame, a firefighter with West Metro Fire Rescue and a swift water rescue instructor.

“A flash flood can cause a river to form anywhere, at any time,” Dame said.

Swift water rescue crews are also trained to handle flood situations, he said.

“Water is powerful and relentless, and not to mention freezing cold. All this was snow a couple of days ago,” Dame said. “I’m all for heading out to the river for a picnic. Just don’t get in the water unless you’re properly trained and have the appropriate equipment.”

‘A tradition every year’ Summer Horn and Shayleigh Brunett spin around on a roller coaster ride at the 2019 Parker Days festival June 8.

Parker Days 2019 came and went June 6-9 bringing with it a weekend of fun as summer draws nearer.

Thousands turned out from across the Denver metro area to celebrate one of the first major fair and carnivals of the year. Attendees strolled hundreds of booths, including a flight simulator and Nerf Turf area for kids to blow off steam.

The community’s flagship summer event has grown every year and has drawn more and more people from outside the town to experience Parker life for a weekend. It’s one of Douglas County’s largest events, slightly trailing only the county fair in magnitude.

Dennis Houston, president and CEO of the Parker Area Chamber of Commerce, which puts on the event, said it has become an event for everyone.

“You don’t have to pay to get in, you can bring your own water, you can bring your own food, so if you think about it, it’s an opportunity to bring your family and not have to invest,” Houston said. “We really try to keep it a community-based festival.”

What began as a smaller celebration at its beginning 42 years ago has turned into a four-day spectacle of carnival rides, funnel cakes and live music. For newcomers, it offers a slice of a small-town fair without having to stray too far from the city. Josh Krall,

“We’ve lived here for three years,” Krall said, “and Parker Days has been a tradition every year.”

About 272,000 people attended last year’s event, Houston said. Numbers from the 2019 Parker Days were unavailable at press time, but the numbers have grown with each year.

This year, the chamber streamlined the ticket system and made all concerts free to keep with the spirit of a “come one, come all” event that, Houston said, is like a brochure for

the town’s signature homey feel.

As part of this year’s “Do Good, Feel Good” theme, two stations allowed residents to get to know each other better and to express appreciation or compliment one another. On June 8, the event opened early to people with special needs to give them a chance to enjoy the rides without the anxiety of a massive crowd.

One of the new draws for this year’s event was a Nerf Turf area, where kids — or adults — could load up with foam Nerf darts and fire them out of plastic guns at each other in a dodgeball-type game. The typical carnival

rides, street performers and miles of food trucks and booths provided something for everyone.

The two massive carnival set-ups, each one sandwiching Mainstreet on the north and south ends, boasted rides and games for kids and adults.

In between the two carnivals, local business tents lined Mainstreet and local performers caught visitors’ ears as they walked by.

“People who come to Parker Days have been coming for a long time,” Houston said, “so we kind of need to keep it fresh and keep it new and offer new pockets of exciting new things.”

VOICES Peak experience is a case of aiming way too high

The greatest risk I am willing to take is grocery shopping in Douglas County on a Saturday afternoon.

It is an electrifying episode of “Supermarket Sweep” conjoined with a dress rehearsal for “Lord of the Flies.”

Get ready for some alliteration: It is carts and kids and confusion. Grandparents and grandchildren. Half are leaning over a phone, and the other half are looking in one direction and walking in another.

I go as punishment. If I have done something wrong, impermissible to my code, during the week, I feel a need to be punished.

It is not Catholic. It is Harry and Shirley, who instilled values in me I can’t shake.

QUIET DESPERATION

I have no sense of adventure, and I never have had a sense of adventure.

Combining risk with adventure is the last thing I would do.

And combining risk with adventure at 29,000 feet isn’t even a moment’s contemplation.

Threatening residents with violence is unacceptable and intolerable. How long before these tactics are unleashed on Littleton voters when an elected official supports legislation that some group does not like? If you want new representation, there’s an election for that next year, and it won’t cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Keeping commitments we make to ourselves

s any good salesperson or sales manager will tell you, getting a “verbal” commitment or a “verbal” yes from a prospect, without a signed agreement or authorized transaction, just doesn’t get the job done.

As a matter of fact, WINNING it’s worse than just not getting WORDS the job done, this practice fills their sales pipeline with fluff and keeps the salesperson focused on the wrong opportunities and investing their time and energy on potential Michael Norton business that will most likely never materialize.

Verbal commitments are not just a salesperson’s woes: The verbal commitments we make to ourselves and never fulfill impact our lives in so many ways as we never quite close the transaction.

And sooner or later our goals and dreams become just another lost opportunity.

We commit to certain behaviors.

We commit to living in a different way. We commit to pursuing our dreams and passions. We commit to changing or breaking a bad habit.

Sometimes we make these commitments and actually say the words out loud. And other times we make the commitment within the safety of our own heart and mind. And what happens in most cases when we have under-committed or failed to commit to an agreement with ourselves, is that we tend to give up or lose more often than we win.

Although it may seem like it, this is not all bad news. The fact that we are having positive thoughts and making “verbal” commitments to ourselves is an indicator that we know we need to make a change or want something different in our lives. We want to make a change that aligns with the things we are most passionate about in this life.

We want to alter something that is having a negative impact on our health or in our relationships. So, knowing that our intent is good, we just need to live up to the fulfillment and to our commitments.

This is why it is so extremely important to write down our goals. By writing down our goals we are turning our “verbal” commitment with ourselves into a form of an agreement. We are contracting with ourselves to commit to doing what we said we will do when we said we will do it, changing what we committed to changing, and fulfilling our lifelong goals and dreams. We become one step closer with each review of what we have written down, and we become one step closer to meeting and exceeding our expectations.

A “verbal” yes in sales that leads to a signed agreement is awesome.

Getting a “no” in sales is also good, not as good as getting a “yes” but still much better than getting a “maybe” or a “think it over”. The same holds true for our own commitments. If it is going to be a “yes,” than we need

ummer is here, which typically means teenagers have more free time on their hands. And their hands may often be even more busy with their smartphones as they try to stay in touch with friends and fill the void normally occupied by school.

But while popular apps like Snapchat and Instagram have some benefit, mental health experts agree that in most cases human-to-human interaction is far more beneficial.

Finding a healthy balance of time spent on and off social media can be a challenge. According to 2018 study by Pew Research, 95% of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 have access to a smartphone, and 45% say they are online “almost constantly.” Roughly one-third of participants said they visited Snapchat or YouTube most often.

Mental health experts recommend one to two hours of screen time a day and no more than 10 hours per week. Too much time spent on devices can take away from positive face-to-face activities, disrupt sleep and in turn disrupt mental health, and potentially hurt self-esteem.

• Listen to music. Or put your headphones in and head outside for a walk.

• Do a puzzle with family or friends.

• Play an old-fashioned board game: Monopoly, Scrabble, Clue or Candy Land, to name a few.

“As kids spend more time on (social media), there is a much higher likelihood that it is going to become more detrimental than beneficial because teens are very comparative with one another,” said Dr. Sarah Davidon, research director at Mental Health Colorado, a nonprofit organization that advocates for the treatment and prevention of mental health and substance-use disorders. “It starts getting really hard on teens, who, even without social media, are not as confident with

themselves at different ages in their lives.”

The good news is that summer doesn’t have to be spent in the pervasive world of technology. Balance is possible with the help of some good old-fashioned fun.

Get outside Dr. Bruno Anthony, who specializes in psychology at Children’s Hospital Colorado, stresses the importance of putting down the phone and engaging in physical activity, whether that be hiking, playing a sport or taking a walk with friends.

“We know that there is a strong relation between obesity and screen time,” Anthony said.

The Denver Art Museum has opened two recent exhibits that offer another way to spend summer hours, when one can enjoy an up-close experience of color and light, in contrast to the truly exceptional vistas and outdoor experiences that we enjoy close to home or within a few hours’ drive.

Exhibits are in the Hamilton Building, while the Gio Ponti building to the north is closed for renovation.

“Way cool,” one might observe!

“Serious Play: Design in Midcentury America” opened on the second floor early in May, running through Aug. 25, and might be of special interest to residents of Arapahoe Acres in Englewood and Arapahoe Hills in Littleton, who live in midcentury communities.

Many other homes in our south area carry similar architectural design, and midcentury furnishings find their way into buildings of every style in the area. It’s said to be a first with its strong emphasis on play, as well as design. Playful objects for adults are multiple, as well as child-sized furniture and playthings.

Co-curated by Denver Art Museum’s architecture and design curator Darrin Alfred and Monicka Obniski, curator of 20th and 21st century design at the Milwaukee Art Museum, where it debuted, the exhibition includes over 200 items in a variety of mediums: paper, textile, metal and wood furniture, toys, clocks and many other accessories. Items on exhibit are designed, among others, by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller Furniture Company, Irving Harper, Alexander Girard, Anne Tyng, Henry P. Glass, Estelle and Erwin Laverne and sculptor Isamu Noguchi, whose curvy, sculptural red playground piece is so inviting. Stop by the table full of tops you can spin.

Playful related films show in several locations, recognizing the need to escape Cold War anxieties that were in and on the air daily … New manufacturing techniques made ownership of many items affordable — and a different attitude on childrearing reflected the inclination to interact with good design.

One finds a choice of sets of “House of Cards” available in the special gift shop where one exits, as well as handsome design books and assorted toys for kids and grown-ups. A related project is “Make a Card, Build a House,” where visitors will decorate Eames cards for a giant house of cards.

Also at the DAM is the just-opened “The Light Show,” co-curated by modern and contemporary art curator Rebecca Hart and Spanish colonial art curator Jorge Rivas Perez. It will run through May 3, 2020 and warrants more than one visit to let your mind play with a variety of experiences.

light (and shadow) over time to present symbols, images of physical light in the natural world as well as metaphorical, spiritual and divine representations of light. The museums’ vast collection was the source for objects in this exhibit. One has to reset the brain a bit to process the works in perhaps a different perspective from simply looking at a series of items in a row on a wall.

Rivas said: “The exhibition will explore and raise meanings about the emblematic meanings of light and darkness, including a section about the underworld.” Altars and deities appear as well as abstract patterns and the installation, “Corridor #2” by Lucas Samaris, last seen in 2003. (Take time to walk through this tunnel and experience it.)

A major recent acquisition (2017) by sculptor Fred Wilson: “The Way the Moon’s Afraid of the Dark,” is a good place to begin one’s visit on the fourth floor. It’s a huge chandelier, 4 1/2 feet wide and 6 1/2 feet tall, made with Murano blown glass, clear brown glass and steel. Created for the 2017 Istanbul Biennial, Wilson incorporated Ottoman and Venetian lighting traditions — historically opposed to each other.

Next to Wilson’s work — and illuminated by it — is the massive and elegant “Rain Has No Father?” by African artist El Anatsui, with glitter reflecting light — and incorporating found materials: bottle tops and copper wire. (153 by 239 inches.) It was included in and purchased from an exhibit of his work at the museum in 2008 and we were so pleased to see it again.

Absorb works on the fourth floor, then descend to the third floor for more images of light and dark, ranging from Tres Birds Workshop’s “Infinity Screen Prototype for Lumina, Denver CO, 2014,” created with anodized aluminum and lighted dramatically. (Figuring out the display logistics for this one piece took several days, Rebecca Hart said.) It’s a model for a panel that decorates a Denver building.

Walls also hold traditional religious paintings — many with reflective gold paint, that speak to a different sort of

illumination. Or, enjoy a Japanese lantern, a contemporary “Ashoka Lamp,” 1981, by Italian architect and designer Ettore Sottsas and a gilded traditional Mexican altar (1958 — “an important conservation project” per Perez), as well as a handsome — and unexpected — contemporary altarpiece by American pop artist Keith Haring. A glance in any direction yields a new discovery.

Colorado Renaissance Festival promises magical season Eight-week event returns to Larkspur for its 43rd summer STAFF REPORT

The eight-week Colorado Renaissance Festival kicks off its 43rd summer on Saturday, June 15, with a treasure trove of magic, artisans and entertainment in Larkspur, 30 minutes south of Denver and just north of Colorado Springs.

The event, which averages about 200,000 patrons each year, is set in a 30acre village with 10 stages of non-stop entertainment, including jugglers, acrobatics, a village hypnotist and more.

Tiny House Festival returns for third year STAFF REPORT

More than 40 small living structures, from tiny houses on wheels to container homes, will be on display at the Colorado Tiny House Festival, returning for its third year June 21-23 at the Adams County Fairgrounds.

Other structures on display will be skoolies, van conversions, gypsy wagons, teardrops, yurts and more.

The festival also will debut its Camping Corner and a Skoolie Build Workshop.

Camping Corner will showcase the latest small living structures.

The hands-on Skoolie Build/bus conversion workshop will feature experts who have completed multiple conversions and live in their skoolies. The workshop is limited to 50 people. Registration includes weekend admission to the festival.

The event is hosted by the Colorado Tiny House Association.

Art Laubach, Colorado Tiny House Festival organizer and director, is working to organize the tiny living movement in Colorado and help make tiny home living legal in the state.

“Tiny home living is becoming a bigger deal in Colorado,” Laubach said in a news release. “Durango’s first tiny-home community, Escalante Village, was recently announced, the small-home community Creede

America continues to expand, many mountain towns have built tiny homes to rent to workers as affordable housing options, the town of Lyons recently approved an ordinance allowing a limited number of tiny homes to be used as accessory dwelling units, and now the town of Fountain is considering adopting zoning rules for tiny homes.”

In addition to tours of nearly 40 unique small living structures, attendees will enjoy expert speaker presentations, hands-on workshops, a product and service marketplace, entertainment, food, drink and more.

A home is considered “tiny” if it has less than 600 square feet of living space. Financial advantages include low construction and land costs, low utilities and upkeep.

The festival runs from noon to 5 p.m. June 21 and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 22-23. Single-day tickets cost $10 if purchased online or $15 on the day of the event. Children ages 12 and younger are free. Threeday tickets also are for sale, for $20 if purchased in advance or $30 if purchased at the event.

Feds consider new tools in fight against robocalls

Federal regulators voted June 6 to give phone companies the right to block unwanted calls without getting customers’ permission first.

The Federal Communications Commission’s move could make call-blocking widespread and help consumers dodge annoying robocalls, which have exploded into a problem that pesters Americans on the level of billions of calls a month. One caveat: Phone companies don’t actually have to do anything, and they could start charging you if they do — just as they now charge for some caller ID features and other extras.

The FCC expects phone companies to offer these tools for free, but it doesn’t require them to.

The rise in debt collectors, telemarketers and, most worrisome, fraudsters ringing up consumers’ phones have led the FCC and Congress to push phone companies to do more.

The companies have been slow to act against such automated calls on their own.

Robocalls have increased as cheap software makes it easy to make mass calls. Scammers don’t care if you’ve added your number to the government’s Do Not Call list, and enforcement is negligible. There are 5 billion per month in the U.S., according to call-blocker YouMail. That works out

to 14 calls per person.

The June 6 FCC vote could potentially be a powerful counter against unwanted calls. While call-blocking apps already exist, you have to turn them on or ask for them. Now, along with clarifying that both wireless and landline companies can block unwanted calls without asking customers first, the FCC said that wireless carriers are also allowed to block all callers who aren’t on a customer’s contact list. You would have to request that from your phone company.

On the flip side, the measure might inadvertently lead to blocking of automated calls about flight changes, school closings and appointment reminders, Republican Commissioner Michael O’Rielly warned.

Royal Credit Union, a small Midwestern bank, worries that widespread call-blocking would make it harder for their fraud alerts and lowbalance warnings to reach customers.

The rules will let consumers ``opt out’’ and ask their phone company not to block anything.

Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel, a Democrat, criticized the agency June 6 for not requiring that callblocking services be made free.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai believes phone companies will have an incentive to step up and offer these services for free. ``These robocalls that are being placed on their own networks

are a hassle and a cost for them to handle,’’ Pai said in an interview.

Verizon said it will ``evolve’’ its free call-blocking tool for wireless customers and be able to provide spam alerts and blocking more broadly, but spokesman Richard Young said there will not be ``short-term across-theboard blocking.’’ He did not say how Verizon plans to change its offerings for landline customers, who today can sign up for a third-party blocking service.

AT&T did not answer questions about its plans but said it is committed to fighting illegal and unwanted calls.

T-Mobile said it hasn’t made a decision yet on whether to make default free call-blocking tools.

Sprint, which charges for its callblocking service, said that it was looking at ``additional solutions’’ and was optimistic that the changes would let it ``take more aggressive actions.’’

There are other attacks against robocalls in the works, like trying to get rid of ``spoofed’’ numbers. That’s when a scammer fakes the number on your phone to look like it’s coming from the same area code you have, in an effort to get you to pick up. The industry has been working on a system that will ensure that the number that comes up on people’s phones is real.

That’s only beginning to roll out, and to work well, all the phone companies

have to implement it.

There’s no hard government deadline, but Pai has threatened regulatory action if it doesn’t happen this year. The June 6 vote took procedural steps to make it easier to enforce that threat against major phone companies. The Senate, with near-unanimous support, passed a bill in May that would give phone companies an 18-month deadline to put this antispoof system, called Stir/Shaken, in place, as well as give regulators more tools to go after scammers. But it’s not clear how the bill will fare in the Democrat-controlled House, which has several anti-robocall proposals that go further.

Whatever happens, determined scammers and telemarketers will likely find ways to get through, just as malware on personal computers is still a problem despite antivirus software. Automated callers could circumvent new safety measures by buying real numbers and using those to call you. They could hack into businesses and hijack the phone lines, then use those to call out.

T-Mobile said it has already seen that happen. ``We get things working really well. We’re flagging all these calls as scams. And then the scammers find a new way,’’ said Grant Castle, vice president of engineering at T-Mobile. ``We have to adjust. It is a constant back-and-forth.’’

Davidon, too, emphasized the link between brain and body. Physical health and activity leads to positive mental health, she said. She recommends even the simplest of outdoor activities: coloring with chalk on the sidewalk or getting a snow cone and taking a walk as a family.

“If our bodies are healthy, if we are keeping our bodies fit and well maintained through exercise, what we eat and how we sleep, then our brains are much more likely to be healthier,” Davidon said.

Research shows that being outdoors also allows kids to get a healthy dose of vitamin D from the sun, develop an appreciation for nature and learn to take risks, like climb a tree. If young people are kept in a bubble, Harvard Medical School reports, they “may not have the confidence and bravery to face life’s inevitable risks.”

Try socializing in person Mental health experts agree that social media benefits teens by helping them connect and make plans with one another, reducing loneliness. But social media can’t replace all face-to-face interaction.

Kamala Vanderkolk, of Highlands Ranch, has hosted exchange students for the past three years. Her most recent student, a senior at ThunderRidge High School, developed what Vanderkolk explains as an addiction to communicating with others via Snapchat. The app has a feature called “streaks” that counts how many times two people message back and forth.

“She was getting too anxious about keeping the artificial thing going,” Vanderkolk said, adding that when she stopped using the app, some peers stopped talking to her.

Vanderkolk convinced her student to ease off of the app and try spending time with her friends in person.

The student began engaging in other activities — exploring downtown Denver with friends, trying out new restaurants and taking drives to the mountains.

timately to get that time back so she could spend time with people she cared about rather than keeping this artificial contest going,” Vanderkolk said. “She would, in general, do more things with the people who she genuinely wanted to spend time with.”

Anthony encourages teens to get out of the house and go to the movies or the mall with others. “You want to limit as much as you can those kinds of sedentary activities and encourage interactions,” he said.

Remember it’s OK to be bored Summer can bring added stress to parents, who may feel like they have to plan a list of activities for the days and hours their children would otherwise be in school.

Davidon reminds those parents that it’s OK for children and teens to be bored, with no activity or screen.

“It’s great to spend time with your kids but that doesn’t mean you have to plan something every moment of the day,” Davidon said. “It can mean you just take a walk or go catch butterflies.”

Boredom is healthy, Davidon said, as it is a chance for young people to be “inventive.”

“They might kick and scream but that’s OK,” Davidon said. “Parents aren’t bad parents if their kids are bored.”

New trail, surfing spot bolster Platte greenway Remote-controlled wave adds to growing aquatic offerings on river

Denver-area surfers rejoice: There’s a new wave to catch on the South Platte River.

On June 5, officials from South Suburban Parks and Recreation District and several partner agencies dedicated a new stretch of the Mary Carter Greenway, the bike trail that stretches along the South Platte, adding a mile to the East Bank Trail.

The new trail, which runs between Union Avenue on the south to Oxford Avenue on the north, runs parallel to an older trail on the west side of the river. It’s designed to alleviate some of the congestion on what’s becoming a heavily-used two-wheeled highway, said South Suburban park planner Pam Cornelisse.

“This has been a primarily industrial area for a long time,” Cornelisse said of the trail, which is sandwiched between an aggregate mill, a metal recycling facility and a junkyard. “But we’re reclaiming it into a place to be enjoyed.”

But the real action at the dedication was down in the river itself, where surfers splashed in the wake of a “hydraulic wave shaper,” a narrow chute

The new wave shaper joins another just downstream installed in 2016 at Englewood’s River Run Park, said Ken McKenzie, executive director of the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District, which was instrumental in reworking the stretch of river.

The stretch joins an increasing number of aquatic amenities along the river, McKenzie said, a big shift from just a couple decades ago.

In the 1990s, McKenzie said, he once burned through half a roll of film taking photos of a canoe going down the river.

“It was so unusual to see anyone recreating in the river back then,” McKenzie said. “Today we see it all the time, and we’re thrilled. People take care of what they love.”

The wave shaper is a welcome addition for river surfers, said J.B. Breidenbaugh, owner of Littleton’s Altitude Paddleboards.

“It’s a tremendous safety improvement” over the old spillover dams in about the same spot on the river, Bre-

idenbaugh said. “I can bring friends and novice paddlers here, and not worry they’re going to get banged up.”

The trail, too, is a big step toward reclaiming the stretch of river from decades of neglect, said Robert Searns, the Mary Carter Greenway’s project developer.

“We’ve turned No Man’s Land into a park,” Searns said of the new stretch of the trail.

The work of improving the Mary Carter Greenway will never truly be done, Searns said.

“But,” he said, “anyone can see it’s really coming into its prime.”

Stressed out? Your dog may feel it too

When dog owners go through a stressful period, they’re not alone in feeling the pressure — their dogs feel it too, a new study suggests.

Dog owners experiencing long bouts of stress can transfer it to their dogs, scientists report in a study published June 6 in Scientific Reports. The Swedish researchers focused on 58 people who own border collies or Shetland sheepdogs. They examined hair from the dog owners and their dogs, looking at the concentrations of a hormone called cortisol, a chemical released into the bloodstream and absorbed by hair follicles in response to stress.

Depression, excessive physical exercise and unemployment are just a few examples of stress that can influence the amount of cortisol found in your hair, said Lina Roth of Linkoping University in Sweden.

Roth and her team found that the patterns of cortisol levels in the hair of dog owners closely matched that found

in their dogs in both winter and summer months, indicating their stress levels were in sync. She thinks the owners are influencing the dogs rather than the other way around because several human personality traits appear to affect canine cortisol levels.

The researchers don’t know what causes the synchronization in cortisol levels between humans and their pups.

But a hint might lie in the fact that the link is stronger with competitive dogs than in pet pooches. The bond formed between owner and competitive dogs during training may increase the canines’ emotional reliance on their owners, she said. That in turn could increase the degree of synchronization.

But why do people influence their dogs rather than vice versa?

Perhaps people are “a more central part of the dog’s life, whereas we humans also have other social networks,’’ Roth said in an email.

The study results are no surprise, said Alicia Buttner, director of animal behavior with the Nebraska Humane Society in Omaha.

Mullis graduated from high school in June 1941, and wanted to go to nursing school, but her family couldn’t afford to send her. She was running a dry cleaners that winter when America entered the war after the Pearl Harbor attack.

Johnson joined the Navy, Mullis said, and gave away most of his belongings, expecting to die in combat.

Mullis said she, like many other young women, was eager to do her part to win the war. But her first application to work in a Convair aircraft plant was rejected for lack of experience.

Mullis went to work in the factory cafeteria and enrolled in riveting classes in night school. Though she showed little aptitude for riveting, she excelled at technical drawing and was soon put to work designing templates for aircraft wing parts.

“The tolerance for the parts was just three thousandths of an inch,” Mullis said. “The most exciting moment was when I’d finish a template, and they’d take them out to the floor, and soon you’d hear ‘whir-chunk.

Whir-chunk’ — the sound of parts coming off the line using my templates.”

Mullis married Johnson while he was home on leave in 1943, and by the time the war ended, she was repairing damaged planes coming back from combat theaters.

After the war In the fall of 1945, Johnson returned home, and Mullis said she and the other Rosies were eager to move on with life.

“We did our part as best we could,” Mullis said. “We all walked out those doors and went back to being women.

We were thinking of starting lives with our husbands, of having children.”

A tumor, however, left Mullis unable to have children, though she flourished as a draftsman, building on the skills she learned at Convair. She went to work in an engineering firm, designing roofs for churches, gymnasiums and other large structures.

“I would design these complex roofs, then I would take them over to an

engineer who would sign his name on them,” Mullis said.

Mullis and Johnson retired to a cabin above Deckers in Colorado in 1973. Johnson died in 2003, and Mullis stayed alone in the cabin for several years after.

In 2006, Mullis met Leonard Mullis, a World War II veteran and former head librarian at Arapahoe Community College, on Match.com. They became one of the oldest couples to ever connect on the dating site. The couple married and moved into Leonard’s home in Littleton.

Mullis has enjoyed meeting other Rosies at the ARRA conventions, but says they’re fading fast.

“There were 50 or 60 of us at the 2017 convention,” Mullis said. “By last

year, it was down to 28. That’s how fast we’re dying off.”

Finding Rosies Many women who lived through World War II may not even realize they were Rosies, said Jo Ann Fisher, president of ARRA’s Colorado chapter and a daughter of a Rosie herself.

“A woman saw my Rosie shirt, and said, ‘All I did was take over driving the tractor on the farm when my brother went off to war,’” Fisher said.

“I told her: ‘You’re a Rosie!’“ The ARRA counts any woman who supported the home effort as a Rosie, Fisher said, whether that was in manufacturing, seamstressing, farming or growing a Victory Garden.

It’s taken decades for Rosies to appreciate the part they played in breaking down gender roles, Fisher said.

“They’ll say they went to work to bring the men home so they could get married and have babies,” Fisher said.

“And we say, ‘no, you broke it all open for women!’”

Fisher said she’d love to help Mullis meet other Rosies.

“It’s been hard to get meetings going in Colorado,” Fisher said. “We’ve been trying, but I’ve kind of given up. People are so spread out, and the women are all at least in their 90s now.”

Mullis said she doesn’t know how much time she has left, but she hopes she can spend some of it in the company of some of the bold, strong women who answered their country’s call.

“Let’s get together,” she said, “before there’s no one left who remembers.”

Late afternoon thunderstorms gave way to the rumble of angry hooves on June 7, as rodeo fans at the Rodeo Cowboys Association’s Xtreme Bulls event watched a surly assortment of stock toss one cowboy after another to the dirt at Casey Jones Park.

Bullfighters tasked with distracting the enraged beasts as dejected riders scrambled for cover were busy throughout the main event of the Elizabeth Stampede’s second day. The third round began on an anxious note, when rider Jarett Folger was apparently knocked unconscious and lay motionless on the ground for several minutes before being helped off by medical personnel.

Colorado Refugee English as a Second Language Program: Teaches English to recently arrived refugees, who have fled war or persecution in their home country. In Colorado, refugees are from Afghanistan, Burma, Bhutan, Somalia, Iraq, Eritrea and D.R. Congo, among others.

Perseverance, love of competition set track athletes apart Nugent, Hall, Sprout honored for high school achievements

Valor Christian’s Anna Hall and Drake Nugent of Highlands Ranch finished their high school track and field careers with rewarding seasons.

Cole Sprout of Valor Christian lived up to expectations.

Hall was named the 2019 Colorado Community Media South Metro Girls Track Athlete of the Year while Nugent and Sprout were co-winners of the boys Track Athlete of the Year award.

An ankle injury kept Hall out of action for more than five weeks before the May 16-18 state meet, but she recovered in time to win two individual events and run on two state champion record-setting relays.

Hall, a senior headed for the University of Georgia who set a national pentathlon record with 4,302 points in February, won the 100-meter hurdles (14.18) and the 300 hurdles (41.70) to give her seven individual career 4A and 5A state titles. She also anchored two record-setting relay teams, 1:37.00 in the 4x200 and meet record in the 4x400.

“If I could pick a word for my season it would probably be perseverance” said Hall. “I overcame a lot just to just being able to run at the state meet. We all had to step up our game this year in 5A and I’m really proud of all of us for rising to the occasion. There are some events in 4A that are a little bit stronger and then there are some events in 5A that are stronger. But overall 5A has a lot more depth.”

Valor coach Brian Kula expects more from Hall.

“She has a bright future,” said Kula.

“She has all the tools and the right work ethic. She has the opportunity to do something special overall in track and field.”

Nugent, a lineman who will be playing football at Stanford, won his third consecutive 5A state shot put championship with a throw of 56-02.76 coming off an injury-plagued senior football season.

“This year was my biggest competition,” he said. “I knew the Valor kid (discus champion Cian Quiroga) was a spinner, and spinners usually have to get everything right with their technique to throw that far. A 62-feet throw is impressive. I didn’t know if he was going to hit that again.

“Part of me feels kind of lucky that he wasn’t on. I also worked pretty hard for it. I didn’t throw as far as I would have liked but it was good enough.

This title meant the most just because my sophomore year no one was that impressive. Last year I threw like 55 feet and won by like 5 feet. This year I knew I had the competition.”

Sprout , a junior, set a Colorado prep 3,200 record of 9:01.53 this spring, won the 1,500 run at the Class 5A state track meet in 9:11.84 and also won the

1,600 in 4:13.78. He won both events in 2018 at the 4A state track meet and is a two-time state individual state cross country champion.

“A lot of people expected me to win,” said Sprout. “I’ve learned to block out the pressure the best I can. I love to compete.”

Senior Brendan Eckerman will always remember the fun he had swimming for Cherry Creek this season.

He competed in three previous CHSAA Class 5A State Swimming Championships with second place as his best finish, but this season he climbed to the top of the awards podium four times.

Eckerman, who will move up a level and swim at Wisconsin next season, helped lead Creek to the state team title and is the 2019 Colorado Community Media South Metro Boys Swim-

mer of the Year.

He was first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.69 and captured the state championship in the 100 freestyle in 45.62.

Eckerman was the anchor on two relay teams that won state titles.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Nikolas Silolahti, Tommy Salvetti, Blake Jorgens and Eckerman won in 1:24.73.

He capped off a banner state meet by teaming with Silolahti, Lars Hanna and Bryce Ortanes in winning the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:04.20.

“I had the most fun this season,” admitted Eckerman. “I worked the hardest this season. It was great all year. I had a great state meet. I won or was part of the winning team in every event I swan. That was definitely a great feeling.”

Summer is a prime time for educators seeking new positions While studenzts across the nation are celebrating the completion of another school year and getting into summer fun, teachers and educations professionals may only be taking a short break as they prepare for a new position.

When it comes to searching for a new job, most industries are essentially stagnant during the summer months. CEOs taking vacations, budgets looking thin for a new fiscal year, and many plan on waiting until the New Year. However, that’s opposite for schools and colleges.

Schools have just under three months to make sure staffing levels are where they need them to be, which means they will be updating the “help wanted” section of their websites and going out searching.

Districts aim to get new stuff under contract quickly, which means your window for finding the new position is only open for so long. Most schools conduct job interviews throughout the month of June and in early July before administrators take a short break themselves.

If you want to wait a bit longer to see what happens with your current position, late July and early August are also big interview months in education.

Administrators are returning from a short break and reviewing positions that are still open and assessing the school’s needs.
