County may push to ease rules on malls, restaurants, theaters Public health, school officials also give update on classes in fall

Like numerous other counties across Colorado, Arapahoe County may apply to tweak the state’s pandemic-fueled restrictions on businesses, a county public health official announced during a June 4 virtual town hall event.

The event, which allowed community members to ask questions of Arapahoe’s public health officials and school district superintendents, focused mostly on how schools may reopen in the fall — and on the challenges families faced after the state closed schools to stem the spread of COVID-19.

But the conversation veered into other territory, too, when a caller asked about variances — or waivers — that counties can seek to exempt themselves from the state’s orders and instead follow their own guidelines on certain areas of public life.

Arapahoe County may apply to change the rules for houses of worship, indoor malls, gyms, restaurants and movie theaters, said Luc Hatlestad, a county spokesman.

On June 8, the county announced it was allowing “qualified restaurants, bars and other retail food or beverage businesses” in unincorporated areas to expand outdoor dining service.

Colorado on June 4 loosened restrictions on places of worship, organized recreational sports, pools and playgrounds. Under the changes, gyms also can reopen to more patrons.

hoe County’s potential requests may change, Hatlestad said.

Counties’ applications are evaluated by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, which sets the state’s restrictions in public health orders, such as the previous stay-at-home or current safer-at-home orders.

Masks, testing, online learning In the virtual town hall, a caller asked Scott Siegfried, superintendent of the Cherry Creek School District, about what working single parents should do without after-school pro-

grams that can watch their kids.

If the state ends up mandating social distancing and schools are forced to only have some students attend on a given day, day care is a “very difficult issue I don’t know if we can support,” Siegfried said.

The district’s ability to provide day care or after-school care is unclear in that scenario, and “we need opportunities to plan,” Siegfried added.

Another caller asked about Colorado considering whether staff and students should wear masks.

Tri-County Health Department, the public health agency for Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties, has not mandated wearing face coverings in any of its three counties — although the evidence Tri-County has seen suggests masks are helpful in reducing COVID-19’s spread, said John Douglas, Tri-County’s executive director. Tri-County likely wouldn’t mandate masks in schools on its own, Douglas added.

Tri-County has no plans to issue requirements different from the state or, “short of an unexpected development in one of our communities, issuing mandates or requirements for schools,” Douglas said.

Brian Ewert, superintendent for Littleton Public Schools, expressed “great concern” about requiring young students to wear masks because of how young kids communicate.

12 metro police agencies helped Denver with protests Tactics, use-of-force rules differed among departments

In the days after protests against racial injustice and police brutality first broke out in Denver on May 28, the Denver Police Department called in backup from a dozen metro-area law enforcement agencies, each bringing their own equipment, tactics and use-of-force regulations.

City police departments and county sheriff ’s offices in Arapahoe, Douglas, Jefferson, Adams and Broomfield counties assisted in Denver.

As police and protesters clashed, with some protesters vandalizing or destroying property or throwing objects at police, officers deployed a variety of crowd-control methods, including firing “less-lethal munitions” at protesters, and deploying tear gas and flash-bang devices.

How Denver police oversaw and coordinated the response and crowd-control methods of officers from numerous agencies is difficult to determine -- the department did not respond to multiple requests for comment from Colorado Community Media.

But in a rebuke of police tactics, federal District Court Judge R. Brooke Jackson issued a temporary restraining order against Denver police and partner agencies late on June 5,

severely restricting their ability to use such methods.

“Although I do not agree with those who have committed property damage during the protests, property damage is a small price to pay for constitutional rights — especially the constitutional right of the public to speak against widespread injustice,” Jackson wrote in an 11-page decision, citing injuries to protesters including “loss of vision, fractured bones requiring surgery, deep laceration, loss of eyes, (and) ruptured testicles.”

“If a store’s windows must be broken to prevent a protestor’s facial bones from being broken or eye being permanently damaged, that is more than a fair trade,” Jackson wrote. “If a building must be graffiti-ed to prevent the suppression of free speech, that is a fair trade. The threat to physical safety and free speech outweighs the threat to property.”

The protests were spurred by the May 25 death of black Minneapolis man George Floyd, who died after a police officer knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes. Investigators ruled Floyd’s death a homicide, and officer Derek Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder. Three other officers have been charged with aiding and abetting murder.

‘Just happy to be working’ as dine-in resumes But not all are on board with COVID-19 precautions

When Colorado allowed restaurants to resume sit-down service statewide, that green light came with a slew of new requirements eateries had to meet — staff wearing masks, limiting the number of customers, disinfecting tables for each group and much more.

“We’re actually happy to do that,” said Khiem Nguyen, owner of Crawfish Boil Co. at The Streets at SouthGlenn in Centennial. “I have family here, and my parents are No. 1.”

Nguyen’s parents serve and work the kitchen in the “small mom-and-pop shop,” as Nguyen calls his restaurant.

Crawfish Boil Co. has adopted scannable codes that bring up its menu on patrons’ cell phones to avoid using physical menus that go from customer to customer.

Even amid all the precautions, some familiar patrons are coming back for dining in, Nguyen said June 4.

Crawfish even had reservations for the weekend.

The situation has been similar for Indulge Bistro and Wine Bar, just down the block from Crawfish in SouthGlenn.

Creek grads cruise to the next chapter ‘I almost like it better than actual graduation’

C

owbell-like noisemakers, pompoms, car horns blaring, mascots dancing and students saying goodbye to favorite staff members — Cherry Creek High School’s senior celebration wasn’t a traditional graduation, but the rowdy scene may have been just as cathartic.

“I almost like it better than actual graduation because I get to see each kid,” said Stephany Shadwell, a Cherry Creek English teacher who stood in a long line of staff members cheering students on.

Hundreds of cars rolled through the path — around the perimeter of the Greenwood Village campus — for more than two hours June 4 for a drive-through senior parade, an event built for social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite all the disruptions schools statewide faced in the last couple months of the school year, graduating senior Nathan Miao said what will stand out to him about the year is the memories of being with friends as high school came to a close.

When Hana Berhanu stepped up to the mic in front of hundreds at a June 7 Castle Rock protest, she first spoke about the anxiety she felt in deciding what to share that afternoon.

She didn’t know if she should talk about the secret friend she had in second grade, who continued playing with her despite the child’s parents forbidding it because Berhanu is black.

She could discuss the first time someone told her to “go back to where you came from,” Berhanu said. Or, she could talk about what it felt like, more

recently, watching her hometown of Minneapolis burn on television, her longing to be there in person, protesting alongside loved ones, she said.

Instead, she decided to take the advice of a friend, she said, and say what was most on her heart. With that, Berhanu turned away from the crowd, leaned deep into the microphone and let out an agonizing scream.

“I’ve been wanting to scream for two weeks now,” she said to applause.

“This is my pain. I am coming to you with my pain.”

Berhanu took part in one of several marches, protests and other events across metro Denver in the wake of the May 25 death of George Floyd at the hands of police.

While most attention has been focus on large protests in downtown Denver, residents of other communities have also been gathering to speak of Floyd’s death, police brutality, racism and other issues.

In Castle Rock on June 7, protesters marched from the Philip S. Miller Library parking lot through downtown and gathered in Festival Park. Like a June 2 event, also organized by local residents Janine Reid and Josh Pease, the June 7 protest remained peaceful.

Elsewhere across the metro area: • In Centennial, a June 8 march in support of Black Lives Matter ended at Willow Creek Park, where a crowd of more than 100 heard Chesney Midcap, 31, speak of her experience growing up with racism that started when she was age 6.

• In Parker, hundreds marched through downtown Parker the night of June 4 in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

Organizer Nina Garcia said she was surprised at the turnout. She said she has children who are bi-racial and felt she needed to do something to decry racism.

“I don’t want to talk. I want to be about it,” Garcia said. “I want to be part of something that is very near and dear to my heart. My kids have dealt with racism before, and it’s not right.”

• In Golden, near the start of the “Vigil and March for Black Lives” on June 7, Golden City Councilwoman JJ Trout read the words of a black girl growing up in a multiracial family in the city.

“I know my friends and family love me, but I feel scared and people do not understand,” the girl had said.

Trout then shared the words the girl’s mother said she had recently told her white son, who had said he felt scared for his black sister.

“For white people, we know not to talk about it [racism], but we need to be uncomfortable to make change,” said the mom.

There were also several Golden police officers present at the march, including Police Chief Bill Kilpatrick.

On June 2, Kilpatrick released a letter calling Floyd’s murder “repulsive, appalling and unconscionable.”

The walk was meant to show solidarity with demonstrators around the county seeking to promote racial justice. They paused at the police station briefly, holding a silent vigil for 10 minutes in grass in front of the building before walking back to the park.

City Councilor Katherine Goff joined the walk as a resident, she said.

“I think racism is systemic in our society and everyone needs to work on it, and include myself in that,” Goff said.

• Arvada has seen small protests take place every weeknight from 5-6 p.m. in front of the city hall building.

On June 8 the crowd numbered about 20 people.

Two Democrats are facing off in the party’s June 30 primary for Colorado state House District 38: Candace Ferguson and David Ortiz. The winner will face incumbent Republican Richard Champion in November’s general election. Ballots were being mailed to voters starting June 8.

District 38 encompasses most of Littleton, west Centennial and parts of Columbine Valley and Bow Mar. Colorado Community Media submitted these questions to the candidates.

What makes you the best choice for this office?

I am a veteran, lifelong public servant, and tenacious fighter that understands the role of government in the community and has lived a life of selfless service. I’ve worked on ballot initiatives, rewrote and helped pass legislation around higher education reform and criminal justice reform, and dedicated myself to work in the nonprofit space. Our volunteers have written 12,000 postcards and made 24,000+ calls. We are endorsed by Congressman Jason Crow and many others. The community in HD38 behind our movement marks the largest

distinction between me and anyone else in this race. I am David Ortiz, we are HD38.

What single issue do you think should be at the top of the General Assembly’s agenda in 2021?

Recovery should be at the top of the General Assembly’s agenda in 2021.

We must support an economic recovery that puts small business owners, entrepreneurs, and working families first. Part of recovery is learning our lessons, so we are better prepared moving forward. We need to continue fighting to make healthcare more affordable and accessible. We need to prioritize paid family and paid sick leave as well. Foster greater fiscal responsibility by moving to create a true rainy-day fund should be our next course of action so that we can better weather the next storm that comes our way.

If elected, what must you accomplish in order for you to consider your term a success?

Success will be measured on if I can empower my community and create greater equity in opportunities so that individuals can make the most of their lives. We must propel the success of our small businesses and entrepreneurs. We must protect our waterways and parks in our community for all to enjoy. We must continue to close the achievement gap and facilitate the safety and success of our children in schools. I will consider my term a success if I empower the community to accomplish more than they ever thought we could.

What should the General Assembly do to address revenue shortfalls as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic?

We should work with our federal legislators to make the federal government do its job, which is to unite and support the states during a time of crisis. COVID-19 and the resultant

economic crisis are a prime example of where we must demand their leadership and duty be fulfilled. On the state level we must dip into reserves, utilize the aspect of TABOR that allows us to declare an emergency and implement a temporary tax on those that have benefited the most from our years of economic success and that are most insulated from the current crisis.

In today’s hyperpartisan environment, how will you reach across the aisle to work with members of the other party?

Growing up as an Air Force brat and then serving in the armed forces myself, I view us all as belonging to the same American family. That belief is founded in ideals embodied in the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, which should be applied to all equally regardless of who you love, the color of your skin, or your faith. As a lobbyist for veterans at our State Capitol, every piece of legislation I championed had bipartisan support. My ability to reach across the aisle is proven. We may have our differences BUT we belong to the same American family.

I started an organization that works on community safety, equal rights and inclusivity, women’s rights,

immigration support, and expanding access to healthcare and mental health services. I have held school safety workshops supported by school district leaders, fellow advocates, and state representatives, working on solutions to address the epidemics of school shootings and youth suicides. I am a wife and mother of three wonderful children and want to ensure Colorado continues to be a place where everyone can thrive.

What single issue do you think should be at the top of the General Assembly’s agenda in 2021?

My view has changed after the pandemic. Given the fact the pandemic has reduced revenue so drastically, $3.3 billion needed to be cut from this year’s budget. This is not sustainable. I believe the legislature must focus on putting together a coalition for an amendment that voters will approve to amend TABOR. Specifically, the legislature must be allowed to enact a temporary tax increase in times of emergency. We cannot afford to cut school funding, mental health, health care, infrastructure, and our environment. We can’t cut ourselves out of a crisis. We need to fix TABOR, then, we can convince voters.

If elected, what must you accomplish in order for you to consider your term a success?

I believe that if I communicate with the people of the district regularly, seek opinions and advice, and work with both parties to building coalitions to pass key legislation, my term would be a success. I will work within budget to improve schools, help teachers, build low income housing, improve mental health access, reduce air and water pollution, increase renewable energy, and create jobs. Polis encourages protesters to get COVID-19 test

After several days of protests in Denver over the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers, Gov. Jared Polis spoke about the incident and advised protesters — who marched in large crowds — to be tested for COVID-19.

“What happened to George Floyd was not only wrong; it was brutal, it was inhumane and it was murder,” Polis said at a June 2 news conference.

The governor lamented violent protesters and vandalism distracting from the protest’s “righteous message.”

But, he said: “Property can be cleaned, but the black lives that are taken cannot be replaced or brought back.”

Polis told peaceful protesters he is listening, and “more importantly, I want to work with you.”

Despite Polis’ support for the motivation for protests, he worried about the effect of large demonstrations on the spread of COVID-19 and encouraged participants to get tested in light of their activity. The governor stressed the importance of wearing masks and staying 6 feet from others.

“Health experts tell me (the protests) could result in hundreds

of new cases,” Polis said.

The City of Denver has expanded the criteria for its test site at the Pepsi Center in a way that includes those who attended the protests, and those participants should get tested if they develop symptoms — and they also should get tested if they have not developed symptoms about seven days after attending a protest, Polis said.

“That’s the way we can act to (detect) earlier some of the folks who might be contagious without knowing it,” Polis said.

In light of the recent demonstrations and many people returning to work, Denver encourages “any participant who would like a free COVID-19 test” to come to the drive-up testing at the Pepsi Center.

“Only an individual’s name and date of birth need be verified to obtain the test and receive confidential results,” the city said in a news release.

The testing is open to everyone, not just Denver residents, according to Tammy Vigil, a spokeswoman for the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment. There is no cost to anyone, whether they have health insurance or not, Vigil said.

The City of Denver expanded access to testing to anyone poten-

tially exposed to the virus and those heading back to work amid the current phase of recovery in the pandemic, according to a June 2 news release.

“People who do not currently have COVID-19 symptoms but believe they have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, or have been deemed essential by their employers, are now eligible,” the release said.

The Pepsi Center site has been testing more than 400 people each day since it opened on May 22, with the ability to increase that capacity as needed, according to a city news release.

The site is open daily, excluding holidays, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Individuals administer the nasal swab themselves to speed up the process and increase safety, the release said. If individuals are unable to, staff will assist.

The testing site is located in the Prius parking lot on the far west side of the Pepsi Center, accessible from the entrance at seventh Street and Auraria Parkway. There is no access to the testing site off of Speer Boulevard or at the main entrance of the Pepsi Center, the release said.

What should the General Assembly do to address revenue shortfalls as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic?

It is going to take years to get our economy back to where it was. Revenue will be reduced and challenges increased. Just as in the 2008 recession, revenue shortfall will limit what can be done for the state. Therefore, we must amend TABOR to allow the legislature to react to an emergency. We need to be creative by working with the private sector to do public/private partnerships for housing, infrastructure, and other things to insure we make progress while we recover. We need to unleash the private sector to help with renewal energy and help fund local schools.

In today’s hyperpartisan environment, how will you reach across the aisle to work with members of the other party?

In business, and in my involvement in the community, I have worked with people of all backgrounds and political affiliations to make our schools and society better. Every issue we face today from economy to our environment, taxes to infrastructure, and education to healthcare are all interconnected. Understanding the human element to these issues is one of my greatest strengths. This means listening more than talking and trying to find connections with everyone. I will work with all my colleagues to find common ground and mutual respect to get things done. Progress, not perfection is how we will thrive together.

Indulge reopened the week before — as soon as it could — to a warm reception by patrons, said Trevor Nelsen, bartender and manager.

“People were excited to be back at restaurants,” Nelsen said. “On the patio, we got rained on and people didn’t even care.”

Business isn’t all back to normal — five patrons is the largest group Nelsen had seen so far — but the reduced crowd size and precautions were no worry for him.

“A lot of us are just happy to be working, so whatever we have to do” is OK, Nelsen said.

Erik Forrester, 39, a regular at Crawfish, thinks people missed the social interaction at restaurants.

“We work really hard to enjoy things in life,” said Forrester, a Centennial resident. He thinks the public missed getting out of the house into an environment like a restaurant “where there’s great service,” he added.

Dispute on masks The state’s new requirements for restaurants, released in late May, require employees to wear masks or face coverings.

But Waters Edge Winery and Bistro, across East Arapahoe Road from SouthGlenn, said in a Facebook post in late May that the restaurant would not require masks.

Cloth masks have not been found to be as effective as medical masks. But they can help lower the risk of transmission by people who may not realize they are sick, according to a news release from Gov. Jared Polis’ office.

Rules relaxed for worship houses, gyms, recreation Playgrounds, swimming pools also opening under safer-at-home update

Continuing to strike a balance between public safety and returning to normalcy, Colorado officials have released plans to loosen restrictions on places of worship, organized recreational sports, pools and playgrounds.

Under the changes, gyms can reopen to more patrons.

The updates to the state’s “safer at home” phase of social distancing come as COVID-19’s “reproductive number” — how contagious the disease is in Colorado — has ticked up after months of decline, and the second peak of the virus’ spread may be worse than the first.

“In most scenarios, we project the next peak in infections will be greater than the prior peak in April,” public health scientists led by the Colorado School of Public Health wrote in a May 29 report.

A June 1 extension of the safer-athome order — announced in an executive order titled “Safer at Home and in the Vast, Great Outdoors” — lasts through June but could be extended further.

Houses of worship can welcome groups larger than 10 people under the new directives, which allow for a maximum of 50% capacity or up to 50 people per room, according to the state public-health department.

Seating should be arranged to maintain at least 6 feet in every direction

between individuals or parties. A “party” includes members of a household who live together, the guidance says. Outdoors, groups from different households also can worship at least 6 feet apart.

The state strongly recommends that speakers and singers move much further back —about 25 feet — than others to maximize distance between them and the front row of attendees. Choirs should not be used at this time, given the strong risk of viral spread from singing, the state recommends.

The state plans to “continually review” the guidelines and welcomed feedback in a survey at tinyurl.com/ ColoradoCOVIDWorship by June 12.

Outdoor recreation could see a laundry list of changes in time for summer: Playgrounds can be open for up to 10 people at a time, and outdoor sport facilities such as tennis and basketball courts, and fields, can open for up to 25 people at a time per court or field.

Outdoor pools also can open, with up to 50% capacity or up to 50 people, whichever is fewer.

“It is strongly encouraged to limit pool activity to lap swim,” the guidance says. “If you permit open swim, make efforts to reduce in-pool interactions.”

Indoor gyms, recreation centers and pools can hold up to 25% capacity, or 50 people — whichever is fewer — per room, as long as people can stay 6 feet apart. Pools are limited to 25% capacity or up to 50 people.

Use of any shared equipment is discouraged, and facilities must ensure all equipment is cleaned and disinfected between each use.

The full list of requirements for all types of spaces, with specific social distancing rules, are located at covid19.colorado.gov/safer-at-home.

Perhaps the largest change is for organized recreational sports: Youth and adult recreational leagues for groups of up to 25 players, excluding coaches, referees and umpires, are allowed.

Watch out for fraud connected to legitimate COVID-19 fears

ver the past several months, our country and others around the world have pulled inward, slowed down, and taken a more conservative pace amidst the COVID-19 stay-at-home orders. Anxiety and emotions are running high during the current pandemic.

Emails are hitting personal inboxes promising vaccines, treatments and products relating to the coronavirus.

The email recipient is then directed to click on a link to a website where their information is obtained and compromised. These emails ask for credit card information for products and services, which often never arrive.

Keep in mind, there are no current vaccines or treatments. If the solicitation is for a product or service, be careful. If truly interested, then research the company or organiza-

As usual, the majority of fraudulent activity and source of complaints take place through robocalls, fake text messages, emails and online purchases.

Most of the circulating text messages and emails carry a COVID-19 theme, but they are nothing more than basic phishing schemes, which are a fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information such as user names,

rides and road trips, but for some reason he refuses to go for walks.

It’s something I have never seen before. Perhaps this will change as he ages.

By the way, Harry was born on October 23, 2017, in Bevier, Missouri.

He was advertised as a miniature but isn’t. By the time it was discovered, it was too late: We already had become best friends.

Like father, like son: he appreciates films, especially older ones.

Riding the wheels of balanced success

“M

aking your way in the world today takes everything you’ve got.

Taking a break from all your worries sure would help a lot. Wouldn’t you like to get away?” — That’s the intro to the theme song of the television show “Cheers,” written by Gary Portnoy and Judy Hart Angelo.

Making our way through this world today seems like it WINNING will take everything we’ve got, doesn’t it?

WORDS And although this show and song first came out in 1982, the advice in those lyrics is still relevant today, “Taking a break from all your worries sure would help a lot.”

Great advice, and I know for some of us, Michael Norton that is easier said than done.

And then the question comes at the end of the first set of lyrics, “Wouldn’t you like to get away?” For many of us, that answer is a resounding yes. We have been staying at home with limited travel anywhere. When I hear people talking about getting away, it ranges anywhere from getting on a plane and going somewhere tropical, or just being able to go see family and friends.

When we think about getting away, that typically includes some form of transportation. And not all forms of transportation have wheels or tires, but many of them do. Our bicycle, our car, and airplanes have wheels and tires.

And if we want to get away, we will not get very far if any of these modes of transportation had a flat tire, would we?

So, I would love for you to draw a circle, or at least imagine a circle. And in that circle, there is a hub with seven spokes. Go ahead and draw them in your circle so they look like the spokes of a wheel. Label each of the seven spokes: Family, Personal, Mental, Spiritual, Physical, Financial, and Career. Now consider that the outside of your wheel, the farthest part from the hub, represents a 10 on a scale of 1 to 10. And at the hub, that represents a 1 on the scale of 1 to 10. The 1 is low, and the 10 is high.

Next, draw a dot on each spoke based on where you believe that you are in each area of your life on a scale of 1 to 10. Now, connect the dots. If you are like most of us, your newly drawn wheel looks like a flat tire. Or maybe, your wheel still looks like a wheel, but it’s a small wheel with your ratings lower in each category. Either way, with a flat tire, or a very small wheel, we will not get very far very fast as we try and make our way in the world

In summary, everyone is subject to fraud. White-collar crimes. These frauds are NOT about intelligence.

They are more about how these criminals get around people’s intelligence.

Scammers do not want you thinking or deciding. They will push you and will try to get you to switch off the logical side of your brain. Scammers feed off your emotions, your fears, and during times of uncertainty.

COVID-19 is impacting all of us on one level or another. Many individuals and businesses are facing economic and financial uncertainty. There is scarcity. What a perfect playground for fraudulent activity. Whether tomor-

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Wear mask to demonstrate care In response to the letter by Smith Young, you claim that your opposition to wearing a mask is “obstructing choice.” Is wearing a seat belt “obstructing choice” or is it mandatory to help save lives? Is not smoking in public “obstructing choice” or helping save lives?

COVID-19 is spread via droplets from someone who is coughing, sneezing and talking within a few feet, or from fomites. There are studies now that show coronavirus may be airborne also. A new study in “Nature” published April

27 measures the virus’s RNA. This study found higher levels of COVID-19 RNA in inpatient areas such as rooms and toilets.

So in order not to spread COVID-19, wearing a mask is for the safety of all people. (Most recent CDC guidelines). Approximately 40-50% of infected people are asymptomatic. Another study by “Nature” (April 2020) showed 44% of people who spread COVID-19 are asymptomatic. Wearing a mask says: Not only do I value my life, but I also value yours.

Residents are finding creative ways to date during the pandemic

ownsend Wenzler of Arvada is just getting used to his new home.

Wenzler, 23, moved out to Colorado from Arkansas last August, and he came only knowing some family members and friends who live in the state.

And as COVID-19 closed social places where Wenzler would go to look to find people to date, he and other residents throughout the Denver metro area turned to dating apps like Hinge, Bumble and Tinder to meet other people.

“I don’t think it’s anything crazy, it’s just how it is, and young people are young and dumb and going insane and just wanting to branch out and meet each other. It’s impossible without the bars, so thank God for dating apps,” said Wenzler.

Since mid-March, mobile dating apps like Tinder and Bumble, where users swipe through a feed of profiles to see who is interested in them, have seen an uptick in use.

BBC reported that on March 29, Tinder users made 3 billion swipes worldwide — a record for the app.

Other apps like Bumble reported that it saw a 16% increase in messages sent during the week ending on May 1 as opposed to the week ending on March 13. Bumble also has a voice call and video chat feature and reported that it saw a near 70% increase in video calls during the week ending on May 1 in comparison to the week ending on March 13.

Wenzler had a date over to his home that he met on Tinder to cook her dinner during the pandemic. He said he thinks people are bored, and because of that, he believes residents his age aren’t afraid to forgo social distancing recommendations.

“Half of you wants to social distance, while the other part of you is going insane. I had more success (dating) toward the end of (the stay-at-home order) just because initially, people were more freaked out and less willing to go on dates with people they didn’t know,” said Wenzler.

A different way of meeting people Meredith Gerdes of Denver also uses Bumble to meet other people for dating. She believes residents who are looking to date are realizing how dependent they are on bars and restaurants to meet someone.

“The important message to bring across is no one is meeting anyone in a normal setting,” she said.

Gerdes said dating during the pandemic is restoring a safer environment for women to meet men. She said before the pandemic, some of her friends would go over to men’s houses after their only interactions were on Bumble.

“Rather than meeting someone with dimmed lights and alcohol at a restaurant or bar, you’re meeting in the park in broad daylight. It’s kind of cool because you are forced to be put into a different environment, so therefore, it could almost change the dynamic for whatever the relationship might be,” Gerdes said.

Gerdes has gone on a date to a park with a man who she met on Bumble during the COVID-19 era. She also added that before the pandemic, she met a man on Bumble who was visiting from San Diego, and although he is back in California, the two have been Facetiming and getting to know each other more.

“I am abiding to social distancing, and it has helped me learn more about myself. I feel good coming out of this knowing what I want and getting to learn more about myself,” said

Gerdes. “I think COVID-19 has enabled (residents) to get to know each other more.”

Forming a new relationship during the pandemic Just before the COVID-19 pandemic, Sam Whitley met his now girlfriend Chelsea Benavides through a friend.

The two went out together to a restaurant, hit it off and decided they wanted to go out together again.

But COVID-19 forced restaurants to close, so Whitley and Benavides ordered take-out food and ate together at a park.

“After our second date, we decided to do social distance dating because we wanted to be cautious with what’s going and be safe. For a good while, we didn’t see each other at all,” said Whitley.

Wanting to still keep the connection with Benavides, Whitley dropped off a care package to her that included ice cream and dinner. After that, the two spent time video chatting and did online tours of places like Machu Picchu — while still keeping a distance from each other.

Whitley said his big idea was to set up a projector in his driveway with a screen. Benavides sat in her car on Whitley’s driveway, and he sat outside of it and kept a distance as the two watched a movie together.

“I think my mentality was trying to figure out what I would do on a typical date and how I can modify it so that we can still do a date like a typical one in a way to still social distance,” he said.

Whitley said dating during the pandemic has been a crazy time, but it has forced him to think outside the box in terms of setting up dates with Benavides. He added that it has been worth it, because he has had a great time with her.

“I feel like it allowed us to connect, and it caused us to have deeper conversations. It was a time to spend at a park or watch the sunset and catch up on each other’s days and to get to know each other and what our lives are like,” said Whitley. “It was really nice to be able to connect, and because there was so much other stuff going on, we really got to know each other. I really appreciate that.”

High-profile coach stays optimistic Creek’s Logan ready to guide team after 2019 state football title

Dave Logan, coach of the defending Class 5A champion Cherry Creek football team, has emphasized to his players that last season is over and it will have no relevancy on what happens if the 2020 season is played.

Dave Logan is accustomed to the situation he’s going to be facing this season, but with a few more complications created by the COVID-19 pandemic that have confused things.

Logan has been a head Colorado high school football coach for the past 26 years and has coached eight teams from four different schools to state championships.

He hopes to be starting his eighth season as Cherry Creek’s coach in three months after the Bruins won their second state title over the last six years with a 14-0 season during the 2019 campaign.

Logan has a simple answer when asked what he tells players returning off state title teams as they prepare for the next season as defending champs.

“That’s pretty simple, as far as I’m concerned,” said Logan, who was a basketball and football player at the University of Colorado before playing nine seasons in the National Football League. “Last year was a great year.

It’s something that the team and coaches will never forget.

“But it’s over. That’s part of the progress you work on during the off season and summer as you get ready for a new year. What was accomplished last year was nice but it has no relevancy of what will go on this year.”

Logan hasn’t had much of an opportunity to deliver his thoughts to his players.

from coaches in person,” explained Logan. “I’ve been in touch a little bit with texting, phone calls and our coaches have been in touch with the individual positions they coach. So we are sitting tight and see where we go from here.

“It’s not really the norm, for sure.

If the world was not the way it is, we would have been working our first day (June 1) of summer camp. We had an eight-week camp, three days a week and every other Saturday, and then we give them a week off and then we start school. Obviously we will have to modify those plans this summer.

We have sent our lifting routines and video stuff to the players. We’re being as proactive as we can possibly be without getting in-person interaction.”

Logan hopes the Cherry Creek school district, the state and Colorado High School Activities Association

have several options for opening school and activities.

“I’m still optimistic,” said Logan who is a radio personality and the play-by-play broadcaster of Denver Broncos games. “It’s important that in as safe as possible a way we get kids back to school. What the schedule would look like, I don’t know. It’s not the same for kids trying to learn online as it is in the classroom. The extracurricular activities are important for kids.

“They have already missed out on a spring’s worth of activities. I hope in some way or fashion we will be able to get them back in school. I’m optimistic whether modified or not, that we will be able to have some sort of football season.”

“We’ve got some guys returning,” said Logan. “We had a good mixture of seniors, juniors and sophomores last year. We’ll miss two handfuls of good high school football players, but we’ve got some guys coming back, and like any other year you expect some of those young guys that weren’t tested to step up and prove what they can do.

“That’s what happened last year. We had a lot defensive kids coming back but not many offensive players. We had two starters coming back on offense so a lot of those young ones had their first opportunities and took advantage of it. This year we have more of the veterans, so to speak, coming back on offense and more holes to fill on defense. Every single year it seems to work that way and every single year presents its own set of challenges.”

Though Colorado Community Media was not able to obtain comment from all 12 agencies, a sampling of respondents showed a variety of tactics and involvement.

Adams County deputies, for example, deployed flash-bang devices and two types of tear gas, according to Commander Paul Gregory.

In social media posts and in response to questions from journalists, Denver police repeatedly denied using flash-bang devices against protesters.

Adams County deputies detained protesters on behalf of Denver police, Gregory said, but said the detainments were not arrests.

Unlike many local agencies, Adams County deputies do not wear body cameras.

Gregory did not respond to a question about how many Adams County deputies provided backup in Denver.

Adams County Sheriff Rick Reigenborn did not respond to multiple requests for comment on his department’s tactics and crowd control methods.

Demonstrators gathered May 28 at the Colorado state Capitol in Denver to protest the death of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis.

The Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office sent 44 officers on May 31 and June 1, drawn from county deputies and officers from city police departments that form a joint task force.

The Jefferson County team made about 10 arrests, said Sheriff Jeff Shrader, including “three or four” people found to be carrying weapons including guns. Shrader said he was unsure whether Jefferson County personnel deployed tear gas, but said he was aware of one instance of a deputy firing “lesslethal” rounds at a fleeing suspect.

Shrader said he understands the outrage at Floyd’s death.

“We all witnessed a murder in that video,” Shrader said, adding he supports many elements of a police reform bill making its way through the state General Assembly.

Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock declined a request for an interview on the matter through a spokesperson. The department did not provide details about its response.

In an interview on other matters with CCM’s Elliott Wenzler, Spurlock decried the Floyd killing, saying: “There is no reasonable, rational reason for any police officer to use that kind of restraint on someone.”

Other departments’ responses to assist in Denver appear to have been more low-key.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office sent between 40 and 50 deputies for several nights, said Sheriff Tyler Brown, but said they fired no shots or tear gas and made no arrests.

Brown said he sympathized with protesters, saying George Floyd’s killing was “an abuse of power people should be upset about.”

While Brown said he is confident Arapahoe County is a forwardthinking department, there’s always room for improvement.

“We need to make sure our ears and offices are open to have these conversations,” Brown said. “We can do this together.”

“It will be very, very challenging to teach reading, writing and mathematics to firstand second-grade kids if they are masked,” Ewert said.

Asked if teachers and other staff will be tested for COVID-19 regularly, Douglas said that’s a direction Tri-County would like to see for many workers, but such plans have not yet been developed.

Asked by a grandmother taking care of her school-age granddaughter about navigating online learning without being techsavvy, Siegfried said the district will limit the number of online platforms used for learning — in the past couple months, there were many — and the district will provide videos this summer to train parents and guardians, teachers, and students so they’re better prepared to use the technology.

Graduation requirements may change Colorado in recent years adopted new graduation requirements for the class of 2021, and a caller asked if requirements will be changed in light of the pandemic.

Those requirements, along with many others, are something we’ll have to look at,” said Katy Anthes, head of the Colorado Department of Education.

The county’s telephone town hall included as speakers Douglas; Siegfried; Ewert; Anthes; Tera Helmon, assistant superintendent of learning services for Littleton Public Schools; and Mellissa Sager, policy and intergovernmental affairs manager for TriCounty, who initially mentioned Arapahoe County pursuing variances.
