Sullivan faces recall effort by state GOP vice chair Gun-rights group, vocal opponent of ‘red flag’ law backing proposed recall

Tom Sullivan came to the state Legislature and did what he said he was going to do.

That’s how Sullivan, state House representative for Centennial, describes his actions on what’s known as the “red flag” law that allows law enforcement to temporarily take firearms from people Sullivan deemed a risk to themselves or others.

The Democrat’s son was killed in the 2012 Aurora theater shooting, and he campaigned on passing that law and sponsored it at the Capitol during this year’s legislative session.

But Kristi Brown, state Republican Party vice chairwoman, has brought forth an effort to remove Sullivan from office, and she says her reasons go far beyond the “red flag” law.

“Democrats in the House, including Rep. Sullivan, shut down the voice of parents at the Capitol

again and again,” Brown said.

“Citizens were subjected to the worst legislative session in Colorado history.”

Did ‘what I had told them’ The petition to recall Sullivan, if successful, would lead to an election likely in late summer or fall to decide whether Sullivan would keep his seat in House District 37.

That district encompasses east and central Centennial, nearby unincorporated Arapahoe County areas and the Town of Foxfield.

The petition, approved May 13 by the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office, requires about 10,000 signatures by voters in that area by July 12 to secure a recall election.

Brown’s petition comes after rumblings about recalls for Sullivan’s fellow Arapahoe County Democrats, state Sen. Jeff Bridges of Greenwood Village and state Rep. Meg Froelich of Englewood, among other politicians.

On the red flag law, Sullivan maintains that supporting it is a campaign promise he kept.

“Every single person who cast a ballot in November knew that that’s what I was going to do because that’s what I had told them,” Sullivan said. “The people in this community — certainly, I believe in this state — should know by now that if I say I’m going to do something, I’m going to do it.”

But Brown, who said she backs the recall as “a citizen and a parent from HD 37” and not in her official role as GOP vice chair, said Sullivan and his fellow Democrats “rammed through legislation that negatively affects our children.”

Among the bills at issue for Brown is this year’s sex education proposal — which succeeded — mandating that schools opting to teach sex ed must include information relevant to LGBT people’s experiences and health needs, and must teach about consent while barring shame-based language or gender stereotypes. The standards apply only if schools teach sex ed, which they can choose not to teach at all.

“Others include the anti-parental rights forced vaccine bill,” Brown said, referring to an unsuccessful bill that would have made it harder to opt children out of vaccinations.

‘Join the ground team’ But the “red flag” law is one that’s sure to dominate the conversation around this recall given the history in House District 37, where Republican former state Rep. Cole Wist fell to an unlikely defeat after a gunrights group set its sights on taking him down.

Wist was one of the few Republicans to vocally support 2018’s version of the “red flag” bill, which had some technical differences from this year’s. As a consequence,

the prominent Rocky Mountain Gun Owners group made him a target last year, labeling him a him a “mole in the ranks.”

In November, Sullivan pulled off an unexpected win against Wist — by about 8 percentage points — in a district considered reliably red.

Now, RMGO has announced its support of the recall.

“RMGO fully supports the #RedFlagRecall against Tom Sullivan!” the group said on its Twitter and Facebook pages, inviting followers to “join the HD 37 Recall ground team.”

Wist announced he doesn’t support the recall effort.

“Last year, state GOP leadership failed to speak up to defend me when RMGO carpet-bombed my House district with negative flyers.

Now, these same leaders pledge to work with RMGO to take out my successor in a recall,” Wist said on Twitter. “It is unfortunate but crystal clear. RMGO owns the Colorado Republican Party.”

But Brown responds that the recall “is not about RMGO or even the Republican Party.”

“I was elected to GOP leadership about 30 days ago and was considering filing the Sullivan recall before that, as a citizen and a mom,” Brown said. “RMGO did not bring this recall forward.”

Noise impact of altered flight paths to be mostly small, FAA says Re-routing to be minimal in south metro area, according to plans

Despite concerns raised by local officials, a federal plan to reroute airplane traffic is expected to only cause small changes in south metroarea noise — much of which will be small decreases, according to the federal government’s analysis.

What’s more, the substantial changes in flight paths traveling to Centennial Airport only would involve about eight flights per day, according to a May 7 presentation the Federal Aviation Administration

held in Centennial.

The FAA’s NextGen project — an effort to increase safety and efficiency of air transportation across the country — began in 2007 and is expected to be largely in place by 2025.

The FAA tags it as “one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in U.S. history.”

Locally, the NextGen Denver Metroplex project aims to optimize arrival and departure at airports including Denver International Airport, Centennial Airport and some others. The rub in the south suburbs is a possible moving of a flight corridor that could run above the areas of Littleton, Englewood and Cherry Hills Village, for example.

But that new path — called BRNKO in the FAA’s lingo and pronounced “Bronco” — only entails about six flights per day on average that would

be moved from the older corridor, according to the FAA. About two daily would use a nearby route that ends up over the same south-metro area.

Centennial Airport sees about 1,055 daily takeoffs and landings combined, according to the FAA. Not much change, FAA says Because most proposed flight paths closely follow what’s being flown today, the only notable flight-path changes around Centennial Airport are the PINNR and BRNKO routes, said Adam Kuklin, a design team member on the Denver Metroplex project.

“With PINNR, they’re coming this way anyway,” Kuklin said, referring to a proposed route that travels south, roughly above Interstate 25, starting around Greeley and turning southeast over the Denver area.

The BRNKO route would take

arrivals from the northeast that currently stay east of I-25 and move them farther north, joining up with PINNR near Greeley and traveling in that same corridor as flights move south.

Flights today already travel along roughly the same corridor as PINNR’s would once in the Denver area, and proposed flight paths would come in at the same altitude as today, Kuklin said.

The concentration — how close together the flights are over time — will be largely unchanged, according to the FAA. North of Interstate 70, the PINNR corridor’s estimated 12 flights per day could be more concentrated, but coming toward Centennial Airport, paths will be similar to what they are today, said Allen Kenitzer, FAA spokesman.

Teen killed in apparent robbery of vape products Lloyd Chavez, 18, is remembered as a skilled rugby player

A Cherokee Trail High School student died after being shot during what was planned as a robbery of vaping products he sold, according to arrest affidavits for four teenagers allegedly involved in the incident.

Lloyd Alvin Chavez, 18, was shot after the four area students pulled up to his house in east Centennial in what they had represented as a transaction on the night of May 8, according to the affidavits by the Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office.

Chavez later died at an area hospital.

Kenneth Alfonso Gallegos, Juliana Alexis Serrano, Dominic Jarrod Stager and Demarea Deshawn Mitchell arrived at Chavez’s home in a meeting set up through Serrano’s Snapchat account to buy vape juice, a nicotine product for electronic cigarettes, the documents say.

Gallegos, Serrano and Stager are 17, and Mitchell is 16.

The money involved in the incident totaled only $25, the affidavit said. Chavez has been remembered

as a skilled rugby player and a goodnatured friend, according to Denver area media reports.

The four suspects have all been charged with first-degree felony murder, aggravated robbery, conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery, and two “sentence enhancers” related to violent crime with a weapon and causing death, which apply if the case ends in a guilty plea or verdict, according to the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Here is what is known about the shooting, according to the affidavit: Chavez, who had been robbed once before, sold vape products in transactions arranged over Snapchat, a friend of his told law enforcement.

Around the time of the shooting, Chavez told the friend he was going to make $150 and had two other buyers in contact as well.

Gallegos, Serrano, Stager and Mitchell intended to steal Chavez’s “juice” in a plan that began days before he was shot, Serrano told an investigator. Gallegos “did not like” Chavez because Chavez knew Serrano’s ex-boyfriend. Gallegos is also an ex-boyfriend of Serrano, according to Chavez’s friend.

Serrano originally told an investigator she arranged to buy from Chavez but that the group didn’t intend to steal from him. She later said the other three in the group

planned to steal from him, that she told Gallegos not to do it and that her intent to get vape product “turned into a plan to rob” Chavez that she went along with.

The four suspects pulled up to Chavez’s home near East Smoky Hill Road and South Picadilly Street, where he walked up to a window of the car and received cash from Serrano, the affidavit says.

He walked away without giving them the product, Serrano said, and Mitchell got out of the car and questioned Chavez about it.

Chavez threw Mitchell onto the lawn, according to Serrano’s account, and that’s when he was shot. He ran back inside his home and had his sister call 9-1-1. Vape products were later found on Chavez’s lawn and in his room.

The four suspects sped away and were in shock because they didn’t intend to shoot Chavez but, rather,

threaten him with the gun if he didn’t give them the product, according to Serrano’s account.

Serrano later said she didn’t actually see the gun in anyone’s hands but described it as a “smaller gun” and saw a laser on Chavez around the time he was shot.

Before Chavez died during surgery at the hospital, he told a nurse and a sheriff ’s deputy that Gallegos shot him.

Serrano said it was Mitchell who shot Chavez.

Gallegos believed himself to be addicted to JUUL pods, a type of vape product, according to his parents.

According to statements to law enforcement, Serrano is a student at Cherokee Trail along with Stager, and Gallegos is a student at Grandview High School who recently transferred from Cherokee Trail.

Mitchell was identified in photos provided by a Cherokee Trail school resource officer.

Serrano originally told an investigator she arranged to buy from Chavez but that the group didn’t intend to steal from him.

‘We have to say thank you’

hen Doug Till saw the television news about a Jeep processional to honor Kendrick Castillo, the 18-year-old who died while trying to protect other students during a shooting at his school, he decided he had to pay his respects.

“Our society is getting to where we have to lay down our lives to protect other people,” said Till, who lives in Arizona but was visiting in Westminster, “and that’s what Kendrick did.”

About 250 Jeep enthusiasts gathered in Highlands Ranch on May 15 to ride in a procession ahead of a celebration of life service for Castillo.

Vehicles came from outside the metro area, with some having Arizona, Wyoming and Utah license plates, to honor the teen killed in the May 7 STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting. He was one of three STEM students who reportedly subdued one of the shooting suspects.

Castillo was passionate about his green Jeep Cherokee and enjoyed working on cars, friends say.

“There’s probably 2 percent (of participants) that know the family, let alone Kendrick, but that’s what this Jeep community is about,” said Doug McDowell of Highlands Ranch. “For me, it’s for the family.”

The Jeep lovers gathered at a spot about a mile away from Cherry Hills Communiity Church, where the celebration of life was to take place in the early afternoon. The Jeeps were escorted by Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office deputies on their ride to the church.

It’s rare that a civilian receives a processional led by law enforcement, but officials said Castillo embodied the spirit of the officers by giving his life to protect others.

“For us, our sheriff wanted to honor Kendrick and the school, because it’s what we do. We’re here to protect people,” said Tim Ralph, the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office chaplain. “We have to say thank you.”

About 20 students from Valor Christian High School — just across the street — walked over to line Grace Boulevard before the processional.

Bendor Shallow and Connor LeFebre, Valor sophomores, were among them.

We wanted to show “love in this community in the face of all this tragedy,” said Shallow, standing beside a guitar-playing LeFebre, who sang songs of faith.

Said LeFebre: “God’s going to be there in the darkest times.”

‘When I think of Kendrick, I think of love’ Thousands from community honor Kendrick Castillo at celebration of life

Show love.

That was the overarching message at a May 15 celebration of life service at Cherry Hills Community Church.

More than 3,500 people gathered at the church to honor Castillo, the sole fatality in the May 7 school shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch that left eight other students injured. Less than two weeks away from graduating, the 18-year-old charged one of the two suspects to save other students.

The crowd — a mix of STEM students and families, law enforcement, politicians, Douglas County School District leaders and local residents — filled the sanctuary of the Highlands Ranch church to celebrate Castillo, a young man who, by most accounts, lived and learned more in his 18 years than most do in a lifetime.

“Kendrick just seemed to be happiest when he was serving others, but he did this humbly,” Charlene Molis, Kendrick’s principal at Notre Dame School from kindergarten through eighth grade, said to the crowd. “We are all better people for having known Kendrick, and now he is our guardian angel.”

A group of young men, friends of Kendrick, carried a gray casket, adorned with bouqets of bright yellow roses down an aisle to the front of the sanctuary. On the stage were a kayak, black and red dress jackets hanging from the ceiling and an elaborate robot, all pieces of Castillo’s life. He wore the red jacket when he ushered at his church. He was on two robotics teams at STEM. And he loved to adventure outdoors.

Friends, family and teachers who spoke at the service painted a picture of Castillo and the impact he had on others.

Molis remembers Kendrick’s first day of kindergarten. He saw a kid crying across the room, so he walked over, put his arm around the child and told him it was going to be OK. He gave 110 percent in everything, Molis said. When he dressed up as a cowboy, he was the best-dressed cowboy in the room.

“When he went to Mass, he wore his signature, three-piece suit,” Molis said. Guests in the audience chuckled.

Castillo was a friend to many.

He met Jordon Monk in an engineering class. The two had a lot in common — detailing cars, tinkering with electronics, the movie “Wayne’s World,” the song “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

“No matter how silly or crazy we looked, we didn’t care — because we had the time of our lives doing it,” Monk said.

Mike Shallenberger, Castillo’s engineering teacher for four years, laid over Castillo’s casket an honor cord for his involvement in STEM’s Technology Student Association.

“When I think of Kendrick,” Shallenberger said, “I think of love.”

In his father’s eyes, Castillo was a “gift” and a “hero.”

He was a man of faith, John Castillo told the audience. He knew right from wrong. He cared deeply about his family and friends.

“To carry on his life’s message, we need to be more like him,” said John.

His wife, Maria, was seated behind him. “When somebody is struggling and moving into darkness, you need to sit down with them and figure it out.”

John emphasized the importance of making time for one another, of being

present. He wants to do just that for the friends Kendrick left behind. His door is open, he said. He’s a phone call away. He wants to hear the stories of his son.

“Love is simple,” John said. “I didn’t teach him that, he taught me.”

New rail stations a vision of future Southeast Rail Extension now serving riders in Lone Tree

Lone Tree Mayor Jackie Millet got off the light rail train at the new Lone Tree City Center Station and walked across to the other side of the tracks, toward a sea of prairie to the east as far as the eye could see. Millet was there with officials from the city and the Regional Transportation District a few days ahead of the grand opening of the Southeast Rail Extension.

“Let’s envision a future,” Millet said May 14, referring to an area that will eventually be considered by many to be the heart of Lone Tree.

On May 17, the grand opening celebration was the culmination of a long journey. It fulfills the promise that initially attracted major employers, such as Charles Schwab. It completes rail transit through Lone Tree with the end-of-line RidgeGate Station near the 24-year-old city’s southern border. And it means major economic growth, setting the stage for RidgeGate East, with plans including attainable housing and a “downtown” area.

As Millet spoke May 17 at RidgeGate Station, she asked former mayors Jim Gunning and Jack O’Boyle to join her on stage, where she handed each a track baton, a symbolic gesture to the way the three mayors have passed the baton to complete the project.

“We have been waiting for this extension almost since the day the city was founded,” Millet said. “As the south metro area continues to grow, this is going to be a vital link for the community…This one element of transit brings all the communities of Douglas County together and we are honored to be here today acknowledging that.”

O’Boyle credited Gunning, mayor from 2008-16, for laying the groundwork for the project.

would be here today,” O’Boyle, mayor from 1996 to 2008, said. “Without your good works, ideas, vision and plan, it would still be just a dream.”

Though the wait for the project has spanned years, dating to before Sky Ridge Medical Center opened in 2003, RTD officials touted the project for being on time and under budget. With contributions from private dignitaries and a $92 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration, the 2.3-mile rail extension has been a priority for businesspeople and politicians alike.

Cherry Creek expands summer meal program STAFF REPORT

Cherry Creek Schools is expanding its summer meal program to give more students the opportunity to enjoy a healthy, hot lunch this summer, according to a news release.

Summer meals are available for free to students ages 18 and younger from any district. Adults can purchase meals for $4.

The district’s summer meal program is expanding from one to three locations. It will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekdays from May 29 to July 26 at Overland High School, Horizon Community Middle School and Meadow Point Elementary School.

The program will be closed July 4 for the Independence Day holiday.

“It is so rewarding to keep kids fueled up over the summer, so they are ready to learn when school starts again in August,” Kim Kilgore, director of food and nutrition services for Cherry Creek Schools, said in the release. “Our food and nutrition services department has partnered with our health services, extended childcare services and wellness teams to promote the program and reach as many students as possible this summer. Our staff can’t wait for the program to begin and so they can serve up a healthy, hot lunch while getting to know our communities.”

As gusts swept through the RidgeGate Station, Keith Simon, vice president of Coventry Development, the master developer of RidgeGate, joked “it’s the winds of development.”

The project brings three new light rail stations south of Lincoln Station for the E, R and F lines.

“It’s a significant time period from conception to realization,” RTD CEO Dave Genova said. “We’re more than just about serving people, we’re about economic develpement too, and it’s going to be exciting watching this over the next few years.”

The Sky Ridge Station is the largest of the three and the only one completely built out so far. At the doorstep of Sky Ridge Medical Center and a stone’s throw from the Charles Schwab campus, it is projected to be the most used station out of the gate. It includes a statue mirroring the iconic Lone Tree city logo.

To get to the Lone Tree City Center Station, the train travels over I-25 on a new bridge, making the rail the only route that goes over I-25 in the entire light rail system. It brings passengers to the currently empty RidgeGate East neighborhood.

The RidgeGate Station includes a new Park-N-Ride parking garage and a piece of art made up of different brands of nearby ranches, including the “JS” brand for Schweiger Ranch, just south of the station.

Doug Tisdale, RTD board chairman, emceed the May 17 event and gave a nod to the amount of collaboration it took from private and public partners to complete this project.

“This project is all about vision,” Tisdale said. “Vision from local leadership and a vision for the future. From where I am standing now, it’s a truly great vision. Before you know it, this area will be an economic epicenter.”

City accepting applications for election commission STAFF REPORT

The City of Centennial is accepting applications to serve on its election commission. Terms are for three years.

Those on the election commission: • May establish election policies and procedures for municipal elections that are not coordinated with Arapahoe County.

• Review and approve election plans.

• Serve as an advisory board to city council.

• May make recommendations to council whether certain elections should be held by mail ballot.

• Advise on policies related to any

regular or special municipal election and to troubleshoot identified election questions.

• Evaluate the number of voters in each of the four city council districts to ensure each district has approximately the same number of voters.

Legislators forming committee to focus on school safety

Legislators are prioritizing school safety following the May 7 shootings at STEM School Highlands Ranch.

On May 17, members of the state House and Senate announced the pending formation of an interim committee focused on studying school safety in Colorado, according to a news release. The committee will look at issues related to school safety, mental health and the prevention of threats to students, staff and volunteers statewide.

Supporters of the committee include House GOP Leader Patrick Neville, of Castle Rock, and Senate Minority Leader Chris Holbert, R-Parker.

In the release, Holbert pointed out that 178 school districts in Colorado operate under local control, per state constitution.

“We also have voluminous state statute already on the books

regarding emergency response planning and armed security in our public schools,” Holbert said.

“This interim committee will begin its work by reviewing those statutes, the division of constitutional authority between school districts and state government, and then they will move forward on proposing solutions to better protect students.”

Neville pointed out what has been done.

“We began the process last year by providing financial assistance to schools to secure their facilities and fund trained personnel to enhance physical protection,” he said in the release. “We’ve also provided funding to enable professionals to come alongside students to assist with their personal needs should tragedy strike. We will do more.”

Two members from each caucus in both chambers will serve on the bipartisan committee, which will have the opportunity “to seek testimony from a wide range of experts to aid in their mission.” Members of the committee — who will be appointed by June 1 — will meet three times during the interim session and have the ability to recommend legislation.

A Philadelphia-based convenience retailer has launched its delivery service in Littleton. goPuff ’s location in Littleton is the company’s first in Arapahoe County and sixth in the state, according to a news release. goPuff stocks more than 2,000 products in centrally located warehouses in each city where it operates to bring products directly to the customer in the moments they need them most.

In opposing Sullivan, she also called out an overhaul of Colorado’s oil and gas rules that handed local governments new authority to regulate drilling, which she argues will cause industry workers across Colorado to lose jobs.

Sullivan contends that he has served constituents well, noting he holds multiple town halls each month, has taken notes on concerns from those who contact him and sends out a weekly newsletter.

“I had countless people who would tell me this is the first time that they have actually felt attached to what was happening at the state Capitol on a daily basis,” Sullivan said.

Whether the recall can succeed is particularly unclear in a district like Sullivan’s, where he won by a wide margin but did so amid a Colorado “blue wave” that analysts said was buoyed by opposition to President Donald Trump.

Sullivan remained confident but also seemed unshaken by the possibility of the recall succeeding.

“Just to make it very clear to everybody, Tom Sullivan is going to be on the 2020 ballot as a candidate in HD37. Don’t think that that’s not going to happen, whether it’s as an incumbent or as a Democrat running for the seat again,” Sullivan said. “I’m not going away.”

State GOP Vice Chairwoman Kristi Brown’s petition effort to recall state Rep. Tom Sullivan comes after rumblings about recalling other Democrats in Arapahoe County and beyond.

State Sen. Jeff Bridges of Greenwood Village and state Rep. Meg Froelich of Englewood, along with Democratic state Rep. Rochelle Galindo, of the Greeley area, were also listed on recallcolorado.org as “bad actors.”

That site lists moves by Democrats in the Legislature that it calls overreaching legislation, including the “red flag” law, the sex education bill that succeeded and the recent overhaul of Colorado’s oil and gas industry rules.

Recall Colorado’s site says it is “an entity operated by” Values First Colorado, a political organization registered to Joe Neville, according to Colorado Secretary of State’s Office records. That’s the brother of House Minority Leader Patrick Neville, R-Castle Rock.

Recall petitions must be approved by the state before proponents can collect signatures.

No petitions have been submitted for signature collecting against Bridges or Polis, and Polis cannot be recalled until he has served six months in office, Woods said.

A petition for a recall of Galindo was approved for signature collecting, but that lawmaker recently resigned in the face of unspecified “allegations,” according to multiple Denver-area media outlets.

Recall petitions, if successful, lead to elections to decide whether officeholders keep their seats.

To bring forth a recall election for a state or county elected official, a number of signatures equal to 25 percent of the total votes in the last general election for that office is needed on a petition, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.

“Current dispersion is close to what you’ll see a year from now,” Kuklin said.

And once BRNKO flights cross the City of Denver border into Arapahoe County cities, its flights largely cover the same areas as current routes do, according to FAA maps.

Noise impact to be small The plan, which has riled up mayors in the south metro area, is expected to have “no significant impacts” on noise, air quality, wildlife or historic and cultural resources, according to the FAA’s own analysis.

That’s based on a draft of a report by the FAA dated April 22, called an environmental assessment. The crowd at the May 7 meeting in a community room in Centennial’s Public Works Facility — one of several in the metro

The potential airports affected are Centennial Airport, Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport in the Broomfield area, Denver International Airport, Northern Colorado Regional Airport in Loveland and Greeley-Weld County Airport.

Officials watch cautiously Andrew Firestine, Centennial’s assistant city manager, noted that the BRNKO route is the proposed route that city staff is most concerned about.

But “when you look at air traffic in metro area, there’s traffic everywhere,” Firestine said at Centennial’s May 6 city council meeting.

“I’m not sure you can go anywhere in the metro area where there’s not overflight.”

The FAA’s count May 7 of how many planes would arrive at Centennial Airport on different routes appeared to be the clearest picture yet of how the plan would affect the south metro area.

On the study, Centennial Airport is “still in the digestive mode,” said Deborah Grigsby Smith, airport spokeswoman.

The airport is in the process of asking the FAA for the raw data of the study, what the agency used to write the draft environmental assessment, Grigsby said.

“It’s an FAA initiative, not a Centennial Airport initiative,”’ Grigsby said. “We feel it’s incumbent on our part to make sure we understand all parts before making any reactions.”

This is an unoriginal contest: There have been others, partially stemming from the myth of the first six-word story, allegedly written by Ernest Hemingway.

One version is Hemingway won a $10 bet by writing this complete story in six words.

“For sale: baby shoes. Never worn.”

The website Open Culture states, “The extreme terseness in this elliptical tragedy has made it a favorite example of writing teachers over the past several decades, a display of the power of literary compression, in which, writes a querent to the site Quote Investigator, `the reader must cooperate in the construction of the larger narrative that is obliquely limned by these words.’”

(A “querent” is “one who seeks.”)

Hemingway may have won a bet with that composition, but it appears he swiped the idea.

In 1906, when Hemingway was 7, in a newspaper classified section called “Terse Tales of the Town,” a similar sounding item appeared: “For sale, baby carriage, never been used. Apply at the office.”

The first time I read Hemingway’s six words, I might have said, “How sad.”

But then my sense of interpretation kicked in.

Maybe the shoes were too small, and nothing else. Or maybe the kid was born with two left feet. Or someone who was faking a pregnancy and went as far as buying clothing for a baby, and painting a spare bedroom with

Consistent with the spirit of gratitude and appreciation, I would like to thank our WINNING community for all the emails that I WORDS received and our communications regarding the first two topics.

Many of you used the complacency column as a trigger to take action, and many more were brave enough to Michael Norton share where you are on the authenticity scale, recognizing a need for change. Authentically genuine, and I sincerely appreciate hearing all your life stories as we exchange emails.

One of the topics I deal with when speaking with individuals and companies is time management. When this subject comes

up, I usually start with a question, “What are you trying to make time for?” Typically, the response comes after a long pause, “Well, everything,” they say. After digging deeper and forcing them to become very specific relative to what they are trying to make time for, we almost always get to a point of selfawareness. They realize it’s not so much time management, it’s what they are willing to make room for in their life or in their business.

Where does gratitude and appreciation fit into this? Everywhere.

Most of us are willing to overcommit, double book ourselves and our time, and make room for things that are important to us, that benefit us in some way, and maybe even make room for things and activities that don’t involve those closest to us.

And what happens here is that this pressure builds up as we are spread too thin, we try and meet too many demands, and we become our own worst enemies.

In a time-compressed world where we are overcommitted and double booked, and we are feeling pressure and stress, we can still make room for gratitude and appreciation.

Are we ethical stewards of our environment?

eing in seminary studying ethics and social justice, I am learning a lot about a lot. How are we living ethically? Are we aligned with our values while being good stewards and citizens of the communities in which we live? How are we showing up individually and collectively in support of each other and ourselves? With these questions come many answers, and then, more questions. But in my Environmental Ethics and Global Hunger and Care of Creation courses, I have to say I’ve been stumped.

In looking at the complex issues of our climate crisis, rising rates of waste and increasing incidents dof hunger, there are many potential solutions from various academic and scientific organizations. Personally, we are told that we need to reduce our consumption, conserve our energy or water, and recycle or properly handle our waste. Systemically, we are given small and grand plans for zero waste, green development, or fully renew-

able infrastructures.

However, most of these are tourniquets to stop the bleeding and only address the symptoms in our triage state.

While all of these do need to happen now, what about the long-term solutions?

What about the root cause of how we got Linda Newell here in the first place and what we can do to address it in the future? That’s why I’m studying theology — what has driven our personal and collective values, and therefore, our behaviors that have created this crisis? We also need to revisit our core ethics, values, religions, and look at why we’re living the way we’re living. Then, we can better decide which solutions to pursue individually and communally.

is to be a responsible planetary citizen, what does that mean? Are my actions in alignment with those values?

For either, it seems that we need to remember that we are all fellow beings on earth with whom we should care for and support. Both of these premises mean we are all interconnected as fellow brethren or citizens and that what we each do affects the other. We are all bound to each other as common inhabitants on this big ball in the sky.

If that’s so, then should I care about the trash I leave on the sidewalk or trail, or the water I use for my lawn?

Or the food I throw out from my refrigerator, or gas I use to drive my SUV? The answers to those questions need to come from each of us, but then they also touch all of us collectively.

That I have found is the key — that no matter our faith or ethic, to recognize that each of our individual decisions and actions has an impact on our

next-door (and global) neighbor. Both spiritually and physically, what I do personally affects you. Now that is a responsibility and covenant I need to take seriously. The scientists tell us we won’t survive as a species if we think we can act only individually. The theologians and ethicists question if it is moral to do so.

Then, are your actions aligned with your theology or ethics? Now, I ask myself that every day, for the sake of my neighbor and future grandchildren.

Final wishes need to be discussed in advance

M

y father-in-law just took a serious fall. So far, he has spent 45 days in the hospital in Missouri. Modern medicine is bound to find something wrong at age 90. This should have been a wake-up call for his kids to FINANCIAL start asking quesSTRATEGIES tions about his final wishes if they never did before.

It seems the generation raised by the Depression-era parents have a difficult time talking about money or health or death.

They don’t want to worry their kids or Patricia Kummer have never shared finances with them before and don’t know where to start. Add to this equation any possible dementia or fear of loss of independence and you are not likely to come by information easily.

The time to open these conversations is before there is an emergency.

Many adult children don’t want to seem nosy, or don’t know how to broach the subject. Perhaps a good place to start is to share your own estate plan with Mom or Dad. Approach the situation with concern that their wishes will be granted, and therefore need to be known.

In a perfect world every adult should have an estate plan that includes a will or trust, a living will, a financial Power of Attorney and a health care agent. Settling estates in this country is a very robust industry. It takes time, money and legal assistance on average taking about 18 months and costing about $12,000.*

Large or complex estates of course are more expensive and can be tied up for years. These are definitely things worth planning for.

Money aside, health and comfort for your loved one should be the first focus. Part of the estate plan should include a living will and Advanced Medical Directive that instructs the health care agent how to handle care and prolonged efforts to stay alive.

No one thinks in these terms if you are just going in the hospital with the flu. It seems there is never a good opportunity to discuss feeding tubes or ventilators. Perhaps when you are all together at the family barbecue?

Probably not, and thus many families are unprepared.

First be aware of the HIPAA laws designed to protect your parent’s privacy. What this means is you can’t really have a meaningful conversation with the doctor without the proper documentation.

Next, make sure there are proper care directives. This could be a matter of opinion of different family members. Having written instructions will help keep the sibling rivalry to a minimum. Also, it is easy to get scared and want to change your mind at the last minute, which you can do, but stop and think of what the purpose of the living will is in the first place. Most likely it is to ensure quality of life and that probably has not changed.

These guidelines are also important when placing Mom or Dad in an extended care center. You will need to know what kind of care is available and what is realistic in the ratio of patients to medical staff before you move in.

lot can change in eight years — something Littleton residents Kendra, Jason and Ash Alder can readily attest to when it comes to how Denver Pop Culture Con has evolved since its first iteration in 2012.

“When we first started going, it wasn’t nearly as big as it has become,” Kendra said. “When I was growing up, nerd culture was very taboo, but it’s done a complete 180.

When I would mention a lot of this stuff, people had never heard of it.

Now everyone knows.”

The newer name reflects a wider swath of mediums and influences than comics alone.

“Since inception, our event has been about inclusivity and bringing different fandoms together for a weekendlong celebration; comics culture has always been a key component but not the entire focus,” Angel wrote. “While it’s true that ‘comic con’ is often synonymous with pop culture conventions, we didn’t feel that it told the whole story.”

The worlds created in comics from Marvel, DC and countless other studios remain the wellspring for many films and television shows that have made nerd culture everyone’s culture — and the con is a great way to bridge the gap between these fans.

“At our store, that’s one of the things we talk about the most — how to connect people who see all the movies with the stories we have at our store,” said Jonthan Garnett, owner of Hall of Justice Comics and Collectibles in Parker, which has had a booth at the con for about the past five years. “If you’re a fan of something you’ve seen onscreen, there’s a good chance we have something that will scratch that itch.”

Another way the con works to keep bringing people back is by fostering the next generation of nerds. The event is a program of the Pop Culture Classroom, a nonprofit focused on youth literacy, Angel said. The work the group does all year is supported by the con. As for the actual event, all kinds of options exist beyond shopping and getting a photo with a favorite celebrity.

“Programming also includes exciting kid- and teen-focused activities and events in The Lab, which is a large space on the show floor dedicated to young folks,” Angel wrote. “The lab activities can include anything from learning to draw a famous character, to presentations and workshops, to finding out how to one day work for NASA or become an actor.”

“We take our niece as well, and their favorite part is taking pictures with as many cosplayers as possible,” she said. “I think it’s all a great influence on kids, and especially is great for reading. I always see it like going to Disneyland — you’re meeting the characters you’ve seen on the big screen, right there.”

How many seconds does it take to tell someone, “You rock!” Does it take more than 30 seconds of time to write an email to someone or the team saying, “Great work, the team crushed it.” How long does it take to walk around to the other side of the car and open the car

How many seconds does it take to leave a note of hope and encouragement for a friend or family member? Can we send a text that says thank you, I love you, I appreciate you in less than 10 seconds?

It has been said that gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions. The challenge or problem is that we are running and gunning so hard as we pursue greatness or chase down our goals, our quotas, our objectives, our hobbies, and everything else that we

have left our gratitude bucket empty.

We have forgotten those who have lifted us up when we needed it. We have stopped appreciating the little things that people have done for us for many years. We begin to think that everything we have and everything we have accomplished, we achieved on our own.

So I ask you, what are you making room for in your life? What are you trying to make time for? If you will trust me on this, I can help you.

Success, your success, can be built by replacing complacency with action,

being the real authentic you, and by having a gratitude bucket that is overflowing.

The Bible Speaks – Why?

On May 7 a school shooting occurred in Highlands Ranch resulting in the death of a promising young man. We instinctively ask “Why, why, why.

Why do these tragic events happen”? We will probably never know for sure, but the Bible gives us some clues as to how we should react to such events. One such event happened in Jesus’ time when a tower fell & killed 18 people. Jesus gave no answer as to why, but taught that we all must be ready for our death through repentance (Luke 13:1-5). He continued that lesson by saying that God is patient & not willing that any should perish (Luke 13:6-9).

Cherry Creek High School graduating senior Edwin Bodoni was named a 2019 U.S. Presidential Scholar, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced in a news release.

Bodoni is one of 161 high school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, artistic excellence, technical expertise, leadership, citizenship, service and contribution to school and community, the news release says. The U.S. Presidential Scholars will be honored June 23-25 in Washington, D.C. “I want to congratulate this year’s class of Presidential Scholars on their achievement both inside of the classroom and out,” DeVos said in the release. “Their hard work and commitment to excellence, no matter what challenge they are tackling, will serve them well throughout their lifelong learning journeys.

I have no doubt that many of tomorrow’s leaders are among this year’s class of scholars.”

The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars selects

honored scholars annually based on their academic success, artistic and technical excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership and demonstrated commitment to high ideals.

Created in 1964, the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program has honored more than 7,500 of the nation’s top-performing students with the prestigious award given to honorees during the annual ceremony in D.C. The program was expanded in 1979 to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, literary and performing arts. In 2015, the program was again extended to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields.

Brendan Eckerman put the numeral one beside his name in the list of results at the state swimming meet and the senior helped his Cherry Creek team end a long drought.

Eckerman was appearing for the fourth season in the Class 5A state meet championship, held May 16-17 at the VMAC in Thornton.

In the past, he has been in the finals in various events but never a state champion — but all that changed when he concentrated on being a freestyle sprinter this season.

Eckerman won the 50-yard freestyle, the 100-yard freestyle and swam the anchor legs on the Bruins’ state champion 200- and 400-yard relay teams.

He helped Creek rack up 520 points to win the state title. Defending champion Regis Jesuit was second with 394 points followed by third-place Arapahoe with 251 points. It was the 11th state title for the Bruins but the first since 1994.

“I’ve been waiting a long time to see that number ‘1’ after my name,” said Eckerman, who will be swimming at the University of Wisconsin next season. “It feels amazing. I was a little bit more of a favorite in the 100 so I think

I was racing a good friend Josh Pales (Fossil Ridge) and I barely out touched him.

“The 200 freestyle relay was a ton of fun. I had a little catching up to down in the 200. I knew when I hit the water in the 400 that I wasn’t going to let anybody catch me. The team championship has been 25 years in the making.

We had a ton of alumni support in the stands watching us. You can’t win a state meet because of one person.

The reason we won is because of our depth. We had swimmers, more than one swimmer, in every single final.”

Eckerman won the 50 freestyle in

20.69 and the 100 with a time of 45.62.

Nikolas Silolahti, Tommy Salvetti, Blake Jorgens and Eckerman captured the 200 freestyle relay in 1:24.73 to edge a foursome from Arapahoe. Silolahti, Lars Hanna, Bryce Ortanes and Eckerman were on the winning 400 relay team that was timed in 3:04.20.

Creek’s 200 medley relay team of Jake Russell, Spencer Smith, Hanna and Ortanes were state champions with a 1:32.00 clocking in the first race of the finals. And Silolahti had a big impact as he finished second behind Eckerman in the 100 freestyle as Creek garnered 45 points in that event.

“We’ve been working toward this all year,” said Creek boys swimming coach Chris Loftis. “It’s a very special, unified group and they swim for each other. It was the most guys come back to swim in finals that we have ever had. Everything came together at the right time.”

Regis senior William Goodwin won the 200 IM in 1:48.57 and the 100 breaststroke in 54.67. Regis sophomore Quinn Henninger was the diving champion with a total of 606.50 points.

“I’m very proud of all of us,” Goodwin said. “I got as many points for the team as I could so I’m pretty happy.

It felt good to be on the top of the podium.”

The other double individual 5A champion was Legacy’s Lukas Miller, who won the 200 freestyle in a Colorado and state record time of 1:35.72 and the 500 freestyle in 4:35.22.

herry Creek baseball coach Marc Johnson has had an impact on many of his players and he learned recently of the power of social media.

Johnson’s baseball team beat Arapahoe 12-2 on May 13 to give the 74-year-old coach his 800th career victory in his 47th season as the Bruins’ head baseball coach.

“My phone has been bombarded with phone calls and text messages from players from the past,” said Johnson. “I got a cool one from Josh Bard, the OVERTIME bench coach for the Yankees, and I got a one from Darnell McDonald who is an Arizona League coach with the Cubs, and from lots of guys who played with me in the past.”

Johnson, who Jim Benton also coached the Creek boys soccer for 28 years and guided the Bruins to five state title and three runner-up finishes, took an 800-200 record into the regional playoffs on May 18.

Cherry Creek has won or shared 32 league baseball championships, won eight state crowns and been in the state title game 13 times.

Creek’s only losing season under Johnson’s tutelage was in 1972, his first year as coach.

“I know I’m not really up on social media and I was just floored that it got out everywhere so fast,” he said of the news about the 800win milestone. “I got congratulatory calls from France, Italy and Afghanistan. I got a call from a former student who lives in Paris, Bobby Corso who played for me and he’s in Afghanistan, and my son happened to be in Italy on a trip. I got calls from two or three college coaches that I’ve been close to over the years.

“I had a coach that just won the state championship in Utah and he texted me, and he said something like, `It would take me 110 years to get that many wins.’”

Johnson’s 800 wins are second to former Eaton coach Jim Danley who recorded 807 victories and is the winningest baseball high school coach in Colorado. Johnson, Danley and Denver Christian basketball coach Dick Katte are the only coaches with over 800 wins at the same school.

“On a personal basis I’m very proud of it (800 wins) and very proud of the consistency,” added Johnson.

Girls soccer Defending champion Grandview and Centennial League rival Arapahoe notched semifinal victories at Echo Park Automotive Stadium in Parker on May 18 in a doubleheader in the Class 5A girls state soccer tournament.

Grandview, which played for its fourth state title in five years in the May 22 championship game, posted a 1-0 win over Ralston Valley. Shalom Prince scored in the 53rd minute for the game’s only goal and pushed the second-seeded Wolves (16-2-1) into the championship contest.

Arapahoe, which has won nine state championships but none since 2006, used a goal by Lauren Walters to down Rocky Mountain, 3-2.

The Warriors, seeded 12th, took a 15-3-1 record into the title game

and gave coach Mark Hampshire a chance to win two soccer titles in the same year. He coached the Arapahoe boys to the title last fall with a win over Grandview.

Girls lacrosse Top-seeded Colorado Academy and No. 2 Cherry Creek won semifinal games and clashed for the fifth consecutive season in the championship game, which was held May 22.

Cherry Creek defeated No. 6 Regis Jesuit in a May 18 semifinal game at the University of Denver when Ameila McCarthy scored the game winner in the final minute of play to send the Bruins to the title game for the 22nd time in 22 seasons.

Colorado Academy, which has won the past four state titles, advanced with a 14-8 semifinal victory over No. 5 Valor Christian.

Cherry Creek storms to lacrosse championship Bruins best Kent Denver behind a big second half

Cherry Creek’s boys lacrosse team gets in a last chance to play in the snow as they celebrate their 12-7 victory over Kent Denver in the 5A State Final on May 20 at All City Field.

Cherry Creek had been a secondhalf team all season and on May 20 stormed past Kent Denver to win the CHSAA State boys lacrosse championship with a 12-7 victory at All-City Stadium in Denver.

The Bruins outscored the Sun Devils 7-2 in the second half of the game, which was played in miserable weather conditions. The contest started with heavy rain falling and then heavy, wet snow started came down and covered the field in the second half.

“It was an incredible setting for a championship game,” Creek coach Matt Bocklet said. “We talked about a possible thunderstorm but nothing like this snow. When we came out for the second half, we said shoot, shoot, shoot. There’s no way anyone can see the ball. We couldn’t see but somehow Chandler (Bruins goalie Chandler

Cherry Creek (17-2) won its Colorado-best seventh state boys lacrosse championship and the third in five years.

“We talked at halftime about being confident in each other,” said senior midfielder Connor Terrell. “We’ve played second halves like this all year.

We knew we were going to do it. We were confident the whole game so the weather didn’t affect us.”

The conditions got so bad that officials switched from white balls to

yellow ones to help players see the ball. All-City Stadium workers kept shoveling snow from the midfield line, sidelines and around the goals.

“It was getting tough to catch and throw,” Terrell said. “When we came out for the second half I couldn’t see.

Obviously their goalie was having a tough time. We made it work. It feels good to win. We worked the whole season for this. Definitely, I won’t forget this game.”

Kent, which finished with a 15-4 record, jumped to a 2-0 lead before the Bruins got their first possession

with 3:40 gone in the first quarter. The game was tied at 5-all at halftime, but Creek took a 9-7 lead with 36 seconds left in the third quarter on a goal by Terrell.

Creek controlled possession and dominated the final quarter, outscoring the Sun Devils, 3-0 Kent Denver defeated the Bruins 9-8 in overtime in the final regular-season game on May 3 but gave up five goals in the fourth quarter of that game before prevailing in the extra session.

“Luke Rios did a phenomenal job winning face-offs and gave us plenty of possessions and our offense did a great job as well,” added Bocklet. “We took advantage of all our opportunities in the second half and our defense locked down. Even when we didn’t score, our midfield did a phenomenal job of driving the ball back. And every time they got a stop and got the ball, we would get the ball back.”

Terrell paced the Bruins’ offense in the title game with four goals. Aiden Burke, the team’s point leader for the season, and Dante Orlando each had three goals. Morry Stein and Henry Olson had the other goals.
