Welcome to the new, expanded Centennial Citizen Soon after Centennial became Colorado’s newest city — in 2001 — we became its first community newspaper, the Centennial Citizen. For more than 18 years, the Centennial Citizen has been a free newspaper delivered largely to the citizens of western Centennial. Starting this week, several changes are being implemented to produce a publication that’s not only better, but also more inclusive of the entire city. As you know, Interstate 25 forms a dividing line of sorts between western and eastern Centennial, generally speaking the older and newer neighborhoods, respectively. Several months ago, the city approached us to explore ideas on how to cover the city in a way that would unite the two areas, help create a singular identity. We embraced that idea: Our mission as a community newspaper is to engage readers in a way that entertains, informs

and educates to help make us better citizens and neighbors. Ultimately, the goal is to create community, the personal connections that Jerry Healey ground us and keep Publisher us centered in this very fast-paced world. This week’s issue is a free sample being delivered to Centennial’s 45,000 households. It marks the end of free driveway delivery to western Centennial and the beginning of paid home mail delivery. This means we can deliver papers to residents throughout the entire city. In addition to continued coverage of Littleton Public Schools, the district that serves western Centennial, we are now covering the schools of the Cherry Creek School District in

eastern Centennial. Our reporter, Ellis Arnold, was raised in the area and knows it well. We have already been covering business and growth in eastern and western Centennial, but from now on you’ll see more stories about the trends that affect both areas. And we’ll bring you a few stories from neighboring regions that also are relevant to Centennial. We are excited about being able to give you all the news of the city. To accomplish this change, we are asking readers to pay for the Centennial Citizen — just $20 for the first year. That money will go a long way to helping us add additional staff to focus on the community. Locally and nationally, local news is greatly favored over statewide, national or international news. The Centennial Citizen is the only media with a fulltime reporter covering the city. We appreciate your support of our efforts by subscribing today. On page

From the mayor Dear Residents: Now that spring is bringing fresh sights, sounds and scents to Centennial, fresh opportunities are presenting themselves in our community in other ways. I was excited to learn recently that Colorado Community Media, the locally-owned company that publishes the Centennial Citizen and many other newspapers throughout south metro Denver, is expanding its coverage into the eastern portion of our great City. This means more news, a broader reach, and more robust coverage of residents. It’s especially important in our hurried day-to-day lives to take a step back and examine everything the

Centennial community has to offer. This City is home to inspiring nonprofit organizations, innovative and nationally-recognized businesses, and interesting people Stephanie whose stories have Piko yet to be told. There Centennial Mayor is so much in our own backyard yet to be discovered. Most importantly, I believe it’s more critical than ever that residents of Centennial have access to content relevant to their daily lives. That’s where SEE MAYOR, P2

Meet your reporter Ellis Arnold, 24, joined Colorado Community Media two years ago after graduating from University of Colorado-Boulder with degrees in journalism and political science. He knows the Denver area well, having grown up and attended schools in Aurora. As the Centennial reporter, he writes about everything from city government and development to kids giving Santa their holiday wishes. Centennial, a young city with a forward-looking government, is still growing, and Arnold works to document the ways the city is changing amid a metroarea population boom. “Centennial is home to

neighborhoods that were here long before the city incorporated, but it’s also a magnet for new development,” Arnold said. “As the hometown Ellis Arnold newspaper, it’s our Centennial role to look at what Reporter the trends mean for residents and where the city is headed.” Arnold can be reached at earnold@ coloradocommunitymedia.com or 303-566-4109. Reach out to him with any story ideas.
