Arrow works on ventilators project, looks to boost virus testing UK effort to build thousands of ventilators, supported by Centennial tech company

One of Centennial’s largest employers is lending its forward-thinking tech expertise to a collaboration of businesses that aims to build thousands of ventilators — machines that help hospital patients breathe — in the United Kingdom. Arrow Electronics also is pushing to increase ventilator production and COVID-19 testing capacity in the United States.

“Through one of our partnerships, our teams are working overtime to support a government-private consortium to convert advanced automotive production plants to manufacture (thousands) of ventilators as quickly as possible,” said John Hourigan, spokesman for Arrow.

Arrow, an engineering and technology company headquartered at 9201 E. Dry Creek Road in Centennial, is using its global reach to assist a group of businesses that calls itself VentilatorChallengeUK. The group came together to support the National Health Service — the U.K.’s public health care system — in fighting COVID-19,

“Every day, their highly skilled staff collaborate to create solutions that help millions of people, and this project is no different,” Elsy, who chairs VentilatorChallengeUK, said in the release. “They are working together with incredible determination and energy to scale up production of much-needed ventilators and combat a virus that is affecting people in many countries.”

Companies in VentilatorChallengeUK had received formal orders from the government in excess of 10,000 units, according to a March news release by the group.

“We are producing additional ventilators solely for use within the NHS,” said James White, a spokesman for the group. “If and when we are in a position to supply ventilators overseas, we will.”

Production began in early April, and the group is looking to build “as many as we can as fast as we can,” White said.

Arrow’s role in the effort is to contribute components and related engineering services.

On the U.S. side, Arrow is distributing components to several initiatives to increase ventilator production, Hourigan said.

Arrow is also working to help hospitals meet the increased demand for testing in the U.S., according to Hourigan.

“Arrow is working on the system control center to support a major global medical devices (company) in getting COVID-19 test kits to hospitals and test centers,” Hourigan said.

The company, Abbott, shipped 150,000 tests to locations in the U.S., according to a March news release from the company. Tests already were sent to hospital and academic medical center labs in 18 states including Illinois, California, New York, Massachusetts

and Washington, the release said.

Arrow is contributing to Abbott’s effort to scale up its manufacturing production of tests. Abbott had set a goal to provide up to 1 million tests per week by the end of March, “ramping up production to the highest levels possible,” the release said.

More than 900,000 in the U.S. may require ventilator care during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Society of Critical Care Medicine.

Such projections are gross estimates, and some of the assumptions on which they’re based are uncertain, the nonprofit notes.

An analysis by that nonprofit said U.S. hospitals have 62,000 full-featured ventilators for advanced intensive care units with nearly 100,000 more with lesser capabilities, the Washington Post reported in March.

Together in isolation: How LPS is teaching under quarantine Educators, students adjust to online schooling as classrooms are closed

A line of cars stretched around the block, as Littleton Public Schools staff and volunteers distributed laptops to families outside district headquarters near downtown Littleton.

At the front of the line on April 6, Beth Best, head of the Littleton Public Schools Foundation, signed out the Chromebooks, sending the district’s youngsters back home with the tools to stay connected in a time of isolation.

With classroom learning canceled for the rest of the school year and the district switching to an all-online curriculum in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chromebooks are vital for families without one to devote to schoolwork, but even families with extra computers find them useful.

“They’re pre-loaded with all the right software, and they’ve got content controls,” said Best from behind a face mask. “It’s a lot easier than commandeering the family computer.”

All told, the district passed out more than 3,000 of the laptops to kids in the younger grades, Best said. Kids in upper grades already had school-issued laptops.

The district also passed out nearly 50 wifi hotspots, paid for by the foundation, to families who don’t have internet connections at home.

“People are being so graceful and kind,” Best said. “Kids need these computers to learn, but we’re focused on mental health, too. They need to see

their friends and teachers.”

LPS students last sat in a classroom on March 13, before spring break began a week early as efforts to limit the spread of COVID-19 ramped up.

Originally scheduled to return by the beginning of April, the closure was later extended until April 30.

Then, on April 3, the other shoe dropped: LPS schools would stay closed for the rest of the school year, as would most of the state’s districts.

In place of classroom learning, the district has plunged headlong into online curricula, scurrying to meet the needs of kids from kindergarten through senior year.

“It was pretty overwhelming at first,” said LPS Superintendent Brian Ewert. “We’ve never been put in a situation like this, but the collaboration we’ve seen has been amazing.”

The tricky part: making sure all kids have equal access. In a classroom, all kids are sharing the same space, Ewert said, but learning from home can exacerbate differences between learning environments.

“Some kids are sitting in their own rooms on their own computers, and some are crowded at a kitchen table with everyone else in the family,” Ewert said. “Not every home is conducive to online learning.”

All Arapahoe County facilities are closed to the public until further notice to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

South Suburban recommends voters apply for absentee ballot STAFF REPORT

The number of polling places for the South Suburban Park and Recreation District’s May 5 regular district elece tion has been reduced to one.

The state mandate that closes South Suburban facilities, to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, means that Goodson Recreation Center will be the only polling place for the election.

Instead of voting in person, South Suburban recommends that voters apply for an absentee ballot before the April 28 deadline.

South Suburban will begin mailing absentee ballots to those on the permanent absentee voter list the week of April 6. The only absentee ballot box drop location is outside of Goodson

Recreation Center, 6315 S. University Blvd., Centennial. The drop box will be available 24/7, until 7 p.m. on Election Day. Voters can also mail ballots to the designated election official at the South Suburban Park and Recreation District Administration Offices, 6631 S. University Blvd., Centennial, CO 80121. Additional postage is required.

Online education is unpredictable adventure Innovation Campus teacher discusses challenges, opportunities

On one hand, Mike Degitis felt crushed to see his students win their first volleyball game of the spring, only to have the season practically called off.

On the other, he finally had time to build his 2-year-old a playhouse “fort.”

Degitis, a math teacher at the Cherry Creek Innovation Campus, has seen the duality of the school shutdown amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and with the closure extended for the rest of the school year in Cherry Creek School District, conflicting emotions in the community will likely continue to bubble up to the surface.

School was unexpectedly called off on a Thursday afternoon, and like that, students and staff said goodbye to their peers — some for the last time, without ever knowing it, Degitis said.

“Unfinished projects were left undone, folders left in classrooms, uneaten lunches in lockers, and like that, our semester as we knew came to an end,” Degitis said. “For most, it’s devastating. For some, this is a muchneeded respite and time to be with family and take a deep breath.”

CHERRY CREEK AMONG DISTRICTS STAYING CLOSED

Fourteen school districts across the Denver metro area, including Cherry Creek, will remain closed to in-person classes for the remainder of the school year, the districts announced in a joint letter April 3.

All in-person school activities for the remainder of the school year are canceled in the Cherry Creek district. The Colorado High School Activities Association hasn’t formally canceled high school spring sports, but with metro schools closed for the rest of the academic year, it appears sports won’t start up again either.

I knew all of this was outside of my control, so the only thing I could do was ask how we can best rise above this, continue to teach professionally and support our students in whatever way was needed.

What challenges and successes have you experienced shifting to an online system?

The Cherry Creek Innovation Campus is a school that is built around hands-on instruction. Everything we do in our building revolves around practical, life-like skills. Therefore, having to conceptualize how that could be transferred to remote learning was a major challenge. Fortunately, I work with an incredibly creative and dedicated staff. In a matter of hours, the staff had shared numerous resources and ideas for how they intended on keeping their instruction “hands-on,” so to speak.

How are other teachers feeling about online class?

No doubt it’s a struggle. For a huge part of the district’s student population, it’s not how they were meant to learn. Teaching is meant to be relational, hands-on, with opportunities to converse back and forth and achieve success together. Online classes are choppy, they’re difficult to manage, and you need to be really creative on how you deliver instruction and offer feedback.

Fortunately, the community has stepped up to support one another to ensure each student still has an opportunity to achieve success. Teachers are reaching out to students and parents to support them, online learning platforms are making content accessible for free, and everyone is working together in an attempt to turn all of

this into a positive scenario.

What are you hearing from your students?

Some of them are eagerly tackling content as soon as its assigned, finishing their materials in a fraction of the time. Those students are asking for how they can do more! As expected, some students think summer break started two months early and have checked out. Others are slowly figuring out how to navigate this new learning style, and teachers are working with them to still stay engaged and be successful.

From an emotional standpoint, I think everyone is simply looking to reconnect with their community — teachers, students and staff alike.

How are you holding up emotionally through all the change?

It’s a double-edged sword. I love the time to be home with family, and I’m cherishing this once-in-a-generation opportunity. (Before), I’d be working my bum off as usual and seeing my kids on a limited basis. They’re both under 2, so oftentimes I leave the house before they wake and come home after they’re already asleep.

On the other hand … My students were in the middle of building tiny homes for the homeless, and they’ll have to wait to see the fruit of their labor.

What may be a silver lining in the school closure?

Hopefully, the biggest one is appreciation for teachers and student education. There’s been so many funny memes and pictures about parents dealing with homeschooling their kids and what teachers must put up with.

I think everyone will come out of this with a new appreciation for how hard teachers work.

South Suburban facing cuts as shutdowns drag on Staff furloughed without pay; district burning through reserve funds

South Suburban Parks and Recreation is facing an uncertain future as COVID-19 shutdowns drag on.

South Suburban, which runs a vast array of indoor and outdoor recreational facilities across the south Denver metro area, shut down the vast majority of its facilities, and all clubs, sports and activities on March 17. The district’s parks and trails remain open, some teeming with people as shutdowns eliminate most other recreational activities.

The district is losing about $750,000 in revenue every week its facilities are closed, said Executive Director Rob Hanna.

Planned replacements of the Littleton Tennis Center in west Littleton and the Sports Dome at the Family Sports Center in Centennial could be pushed back.

The district is working on applying for federal relief, but federal programs are continuously evolving and staff are trying to figure out how much the district might qualify for, Hanna said.

The 2008 recession hit the district hard, Hanna said, causing years of deferred maintenance that the district has only begun to catch up with in recent years.

Hanna said he doesn’t expect this shutdown or the possibility of an economic recession to have as severe an impact on the district.

“The last recession was based on deeper economic issues,” Hanna said. “If we get on top of this thing, if we bend the curve or we get a vaccine, we could bounce back quicker.”

Hanna said he’s not sleeping much lately.

“If a tornado hit Goodson Rec Center, I’d know how long it would take to get things back to normal,” he said. “With this, we just don’t know.”

Centennial Medical Plaza bracing for COVID-19 surge

When health care workers and other employees show up for their shifts at Centennial Medical Plaza, they undergo a mandatory temperature check.

The staff has taken a proactive approach in ensuring workers are healthy for the ongoing fight against COVID-19, and as the expected surge of patients draws nearer, the medical facility has been spared from the shortage of equipment that other health care workers have had to face. “I think we’ve been super fortunate to have enough PPE right now,� said Katie Sprinkel, an emergency room doctor at Centennial Medical Plaza, referring to personal protective equipment such as masks and gowns.

It’s evidence of a strong supply chain from the facility’s hospital system, Sprinkel said. Centennial Medical Plaza includes a full-service emergency

room and other services typically found only in a hospital setting, but it doesn’t include a hospital itself. It’s a campus of the Medical Center of Aurora, a hospital to the north. Centennial Medical Plaza is in the process of building a hospital on site, Sprinkel said.

But as the only emergency room in Centennial, according to its website, it’s still seeing many patients a day with COVID-19, said Sprinkel, who is the associate medical director of the emergency department at both the Centennial and Aurora locations. “The surge we’ve all been bracing for really hasn’t totally materialized,�

Sprinkel said. “I don’t think anyone’s confident enough to say we’re through the worst of it.�

Social distancing measures, such as closing many types of businesses and limiting gatherings, have delayed the expected peak of COVID-19 cases in Colorado until at least May, and possibly until sometime in summer,

according to state officials.

Sprinkel and her colleagues have been working almost around the clock for roughly a month to prepare, converting “everyone unused inch of space� at the Medical Center of Aurora to accommodate more patients, Sprinkel said.

That includes turning rooms used for other purposes into space capable of ventilator treatment and intensive care, she said.

Centennial Medical Plaza, 14200 E. Arapahoe Road, has adjusted to follow the statewide stay-at-home order, which requires employees of industries that are allowed to work on-site to stay at least six feet apart from others as much as possible. All nonessential staff are working from home, Sprinkel said. “We’ve been as creative as we can to minimize contact� between patients and staff, she added.

When asked how community members can help overworked health care workers, Sprinkel said: “To be honest,

even the sentiment is really appreciated.�

But if citizens want to go further, Sprinkel said, they can donate to Lunches for Clinicians, an effort to feed health care workers and at the same time provide revenue to local restaurants struggling to stay afloat amid the shutdown of dine-in service.

Another organization community members can support is Project C.U.R.E., Sprinkel said, which works to provide medical supplies and equipment to hospitals and clinics in other countries but also is supporting health care systems in the United States due to COVID-19, according to its website.

to leave kids at home or scramble for child care. Some parents have been laid off, and are struggling with food insecurity.

“At the same time, we’re seeing the community step up,” Lengyel said.

Lengyel, other parents and teachers have personally delivered laptops, school supplies and groceries to students’ homes.

“I’m touched by how willing and open parents are with each other,” Lengyel said. “Everyone is offering to help, and everyone has something to offer, even if it’s just an encouraging word. It’s beautiful in a hard time.”

Lessons, especially for little kids, are light-touch. While most grades start the day with Google Hangouts videoconference meetings, the youngest grades are given lists of activities to prevent youngsters from staring

at screens all day. Even high-school grades seldom exceed a few hours of work a day.

Online learning is going pretty well so far, said Jared Ewy, the dad of students ages 6, 10 and 12.

“It’s kind of cool to be dropped into your kids’ lives and see how they do in school,” Ewy said. “I’m getting a better sense of where they’re at on skills, and what I can help with.”

The new framework is bringing about an “erosion of pretensions and conventions,” Ewy said.

“The teachers are finding themselves and loosening up more,” Ewy said. “My kindergartner’s teacher is raising baby chicks and giving us updates. They’re finding new ways to teach. My only concern is wondering whether my kids will have the mental wherewithal to sit still in a classroom for seven hours a day again after this.”

Among the requirements are that a family’s annual combined gross income must be below $75,000 and the household must contain at least one child 18 or younger. however, the new paradigm is something of a letdown.

Kelsey Weiser, a senior at Heritage High School, said she was looking forward to this semester for years.

“You build it up in your head,” said Weiser, 17. “Prom, graduation, all the crazy stuff you do with your friends.

It’s all been taken away.”

Now, though, prom is canceled, and Weiser’s red prom dress sits unused in a box beneath her desk. She isn’t getting her hopes that graduation could be rescheduled for summer. A lifelong soccer player, she won’t get the chance to make up for last year’s playoff loss, or to celebrate at the team’s senior night.

“It’s a disappointment, but there’s nothing I can do about it,” Weiser said.

She’s trying to make the most of quarantine. In addition to about three hours a day of schoolwork, she’s reading, painting and working out. She’s also looking forward to this fall, when she starts classes at the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

“I’m trying to stay positive,” she said. “People are sick and dying. I haven’t lost anyone. I can’t dwell on the bad. After all, we’re part of history. We’ll be the graduating class that never graduated.”

Fertilizer: arch enemy of waterways.

With restaurant sales restricted, some have shifted to a grocery model Some sell and deliver items like bread, milk and eggs

Before the COVID-19 pandemic reached Colorado, Indulge Bistro & Wine Bar was having a record year.

The restaurant’s three locations, Highlands Ranch, Golden and Centennial, were shut down for in-store dining March 17, along with the rest of the state’s sit-down food establishments.

“We knew it was going to have an impact on our business before the shutdowns,” said co-owner Peter Fatianow.

Fatianow, a long-time entrepreneur who owns the restaurant with his wife, said he knew the business would have to make a major shift to survive.

“Delivery can’t sustain a restaurant business right now,” he said.

The way he sees it, it doesn’t make sense to pay the costs of preparing the food in the hopes that there will be enough orders, he said.

Instead, he and his wife Delinda decided to switch their restaurant to a grocery model. The day after Gov. Jared Polis closed restaurants to dinein service, they opened the grocery and closed their kitchens for any food preparation.

“We were ready to roll,” Fatianow said.

Instead of shelves and carts, however, the store has dining tables and boxes of food products. Because of the virus, only five people are allowed inside at a time and they are required to stand on red x’s — six feet apart, of course.

The store also encourages patrons to place their orders over the phone so the employees can bring the food out to the car.

“It was very clear that the pain people were feeling is that they would go into grocery stores and shelves would be bare,” Fatianow said. “The other part is that higher risk people are concerned about touching grocery carts.”

The stress of layoffs When the restrictions on dine-in service were announced, Indulge had to lay off about 70 of its 80 employees, only keeping a few to help with the grocery store.

“I’ve never had to have a mass layoff in any companies,” Fatianow said.

“That was by far the hardest thing in my entrepreneurial career that I’ve ever had to do.”

During that first week, Fatianow and his remaining team worked up to 18 hours per day as they pivoted their entire business model, he said.

“We had to figure out a way these leases were going to get paid or they were going to come take our house,”

he said. “It was survival.”

Now that the grocery model seems to be thriving, they’ve granted themselves a few moments of rest before they start in on the next steps: figuring out what happens when the sanctions are lifted.

“What will restaurants look like when we reopen?” he said. “Are people going to want to come back?”

Fatianow hopes to see the regulations that were waived to allow restaurants like his to sell bottled wine and grocery products permanently changed.

“We’re trying to be proactive… and provide additional revenue streams for restaurants that make it out of this,” he said.

Indulge isn’t the only restaurant that has adopted this approach. Others in the area have also started selling bulk or raw items like eggs, condiments and even toilet paper.

While Taste of Philly in Highlands Ranch started selling grocery items at the start of the shutdown, the store eventually stopped after not finding many buyers, owner Martin Garvey said.

“One of the reasons we’re able to do this is because we have a completely different supply chain,” Fatianow said.

Fatianow expected they would make some sales, he said. What surprised him, is just how excited people are about what they see as fewer germs and more accessible food.

“They appreciate that they don’t have to go to a grocery store,” he said.

“And we can help feed their family in a safe way.”

Answering your questions about COVID-19 in Colorado What are stay-at-home order limits? When will COVID-19 peak occur? Can a person get COVID-19 twice? And more

Still have questions about COVID19? You’re probably not alone.

Just over a month after authorities detected the new coronavirus in Colorado, information about the disease itself — and how Colorado policies are reacting to it — is still evolving and can be tough to follow.

Here is a look at questions about COVID-19 in Colorado, including answers about how the statewide stay-at-home order is enforced (hint: you don’t need to provide paperwork to police), whether you can leave your house to take care of a friend, when the pandemic will reach its peak in Colorado and more.

How far can a stay-at-home order go?

It’s unclear, but it appears unlikely that the order could get much more extreme.

Under Colorado law, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has broad authority to

close theaters, schools and other public places. The agency also can seek isolation or quarantine of individuals when necessary to protect public health, according to a fact sheet from the office of Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser.

The health department’s executive director, Jill Hunsaker Ryan, has not said the state is considering closing more types of businesses or giving people less ability to leave home — nor have other state officials.

The state has been evaluating the success of the order, and “if we need to do something differently around the stay-at-home order, we certainly can,” Ryan told reporters April 6.

But she added: “When we make these decisions in Colorado, the governor takes into account personal freedom and economic consequences and then tries to balance all that in the context of hospital capacity.”

When will the peak occur?

The “peak” is the time when the number of reported COVID-19 cases reaches its highest point.

Data show that Colorado’s social distancing has slowed the spread of COVID-19 and has delayed the peak to some degree.

For a while in March, the number of COVID-19 cases in the state was doubling every 1 1/2 days. As of early April, cases were doubling roughly every six days, according to state officials.

ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE IF YOU HAVE COVID-19 SYMPTOMS

If you have symptoms of COVID-19, first call a health care provider, clinic or hospital. The provider will give instructions on where to go to for care and testing.

If instructed to seek care, follow the precautionary advice of the medical provider before going into any health facility, the state advises.

Certain people are at higher risk of getting very sick from COVID-19, including older adults, especially those over 80; and those with chronic medical conditions such as heart, lung or kidney disease. Older adults who have chronic medical conditions are at the highest risk.

Illness can be severe and require hospitalization, but most individuals recover by resting, drinking plenty of liquids, and taking pain- and fever-reducing medications, according to the state.

Other advice from public health officials: • Stay home if you are sick.

• Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces such as desks, phones, doorknobs and rails.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

The peak “could be anywhere from May until later in summer, and we hope to narrow that down,” Rachel Herlihy, state epidemiologist, told

reporters on April 6. She noted that predictions depend on the level of social distancing the stay-at-home order achieves — in other words, how well people comply.

Can I take care of a friend?

The statewide stay-at-home order explicitly says Coloradans can leave home to care for family members and pets — and even livestock — in another location. But what about a friend?

The order also allows for taking care of other “vulnerable” people.

During the pandemic, state officials have used that term to mean people more likely to become infected with COVID-19 — people older than 60 or those with serious health conditions.

Young people who have disabilities or other needs may need support, too, said Mike Willis, director of the state Emergency Operations Center.

The word “vulnerable” used in this part of the stay-at-home order isn’t limited to older adults, or people with disabilities or serious health conditions, according to Ian Dickson, a spokesman for the state health department.

And in general, the order allows Coloradans to deliver necessary services or supplies, such as food or other groceries, to others.

Movies make sense in a world that doesn’t

uring these strange days and nights, many of you are watching films to pass time.

So am I: QUIET mostly comedies, mysteries, and, DESPERATION believe it or not, love stories.

Yes, I am a bread crumb-encrusted old frog, but deep down (very deep) I am a romantic, bread crumb-encrusted old frog, with some love story suggestions.

Craig Marshall I can’t, however, recommend “Love Smith Story,” the 1970 movie based on Erich Segal’s book. Segal was a Harvard, Yale, and Princeton

“The Best Years of Our Lives” includes an unforgettable scene of a B-17 and B-25 graveyard.

Look for: armless Homer (Harold Russell) asks Butch (Hoagy Carmichael) if he knows “Lazy River,” when Butch is playing piano in his Boone City bar.

Carmichael composed “Lazy River.”

Boone City is based on Cincinnati.

“Random Harvest” isn’t on my list, nor is “Wuthering Heights,” but both of them get votes from other film critics.

Is it possible to fall in love with a painting of a woman? Ask Dana Andrews who bids on a presumed dead woman’s portrait in “Laura,” also starring Gene Tierney.

Taking the presumed dead infatuation further, I recommend Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo.” James Stewart

A drama released in 1946 is guaranteed to make your eyes blurry when Frederic March returns from the war and surprises Myrna Loy.

“A Star is Born”? Not for me but for many others. Every era has its own, going back to Fredric March and Janet Gaynor, up to Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga.

How about some offbeat love stories?

Top of my list is “Harold and Maude,” starring Bud Cort, Ruth Gordon, and Cat Stevens’ songs.

At the time of filming, Gordon was 51 years older than Cort.

n last week’s column I made a recommendation to replace the word react with the word respond as sometimes we never just react, we either overreact and make things worse, or we underreact and don’t do enough. But when we respond, we tend to think a little more clearly and do exactly what is needed.

I have seen so many posts on social media where people pose the question, “When this quarantine is all over, what WINNING will be the first thing WORDS you do?” And I have seen some really funny replies, and some pretty scary replies. After enjoying a laugh, I started to think about the question again.

What will I do when this quarantine is all over?

Michael Norton After running through several things that I thought I might do, it occurred to me that I couldn’t really think of that one thing that I really wanted to do. There are just too many unknowns right now. So instead, I focused my energy on what I can still do during the quarantine. And what I want to do now is give as much hope and encouragement as I can to as many people as possible so that I can

make a difference in some way.

Years from now people will be talking about this time that we are all going through. The novel coronavirus and its impact on our society, the economy, and sadly, the loss of life. They will also talk about how we as the people who lived through it responded. And right now, we are the authors of what people will say in the future. Other than maintaining social distancing, wearing masks, and washing our hands we really can’t control what is happening around us. But we can control what is happening within us and our homes.

A huge shout-out to the medical community and everyone on the front lines, and to each and every first responder out there, we appreciate you all so very much. We don’t call a first responder a first reactor, do we? No, we call them a first responder. When we are given medication that doesn’t agree with us, we typically say that we are having a negative reaction. However, when we are given a medication that helps us to feel better, we typically say that we are responding favorably.

Do you see the difference? We can choose to respond favorably.

When this is all over, people will not only talk about us years from now, they will be talking about us while

The ongoing economic impact of COVID-19

he coronavirus (COVID-19) is in full force. The pandemic has touched the entire world in one way or another. It does not appear that anyone can escape the threat of the virus or the economic impact at this point.

There are still many unknowns.

It appears inevitable that we are in, or near, an economic contraction as well as significant changes to the way FINANCIAL we will do business STRATEGIES going forward.

Investors stuck at home and faced with 24/7 market news are likely to have a fair amount of anxiety about the condition of their investments and their retirement.

While the news has stated many times this Patricia Kummer is “unprecedented,” I would challenge that every economic downturn has been called the same.

It is amazing that the stock market follows similar patterns of decline and recovery, regardless of the catalyst that caused the volatility in the first place. It is important to keep these macro cycles in mind and focus on the outcome and where you would want to be positioned then.

People often feel the need to do something when a market decline hits.

we are still in it and as soon as it is all over. They will see how we responded and how we handled ourselves during this crisis. Did we stress ourselves out, did we get angry and cranky, did we create bigger problems? We live in a world where we share what is happening in our lives through social media. Access to yinformation is everywhere. Artificial intelligence picks up on what we look at while we are online. It picks up on trends and then fills our social media

This is a good time to remind investors that the stock market is often forward looking. The significant declines in the last few weeks could be the bell weather for expected bad economic news.

Now let’s look at all the positives that have occurred already. First the Federal Reserve was quick to cut interest rates aggressively. Next, we received the Family First Coronavirus feed with more of the same content.

So, if we are reacting and negatively ranting in our own posts, we will continue to see other negativity being posted. However, if we respond by looking at, and “liking” posts of a positive nature, we will continue to see uplifting content filling us with even greater hope and encouragement that we can share and pass along.

Neighbors are bringing food, sports teams and musicians are raising money, and technology is providing remote offices for millions.

HOW MEDITATION CALMS THE BODY There are two main branches of the body’s autonomic nervous system, which regulates its unconscious functions, such as digestion and heart rate.

These branches are the sympathetic — the fight-orflight system — and the parasympathetic — the rest and digest system.

“Meditation helps us tap into the parasympathetic nervous system,” said Dr. Justin Ross, a psychologist at UCHealth’s Center for Integrative Medicine. “Think about the sympathetic system being the gas on a car and the parasympathetic system being the brake … you need to learn how to use the brake appropriately.”

By engaging the parasympathetic system, the body’s rhythms become more balanced. The heart rate slows and the sympathetic system no longer pushes stress chemicals — such as adrenaline — into the bloodstream. Meditation also decreases cortisol, the main hormone contributing to long-term stress.

“You’re going to feel a better sense of focus and calm and relaxation,” Ross said.

Practitioners offer guidance for launching a routine

hen Sean Thompson developed a stress-related ulcer in college in 1988, a psychology professor recommended he try one simple practice to find relief: meditation.

After trying out the professor’s tape of a guided meditation, Thompson made a life-altering discovery.

“What happened was it worked,” he said. “I started feeling more relaxed.”

Twenty-four years later, Thompson founded the Centered Path Buddhist meditation center in Parker. The center, which he describes as more of a study group than a religious organization, teaches folks of all backgrounds how to harness the power of meditation.

“The only people who it can’t help are those who aren’t willing to try,” said Thompson.

Many psychologists, including Dr. Justin Ross at UCHealth’s Center for Integrative Medicine, also recommend the practice to reduce stress.

“There are tens of thousands of published studies on this,” Ross said. “The research at this point is pretty extensive and comprehensive across a wide range of conditions and concerns.”

Mindfulness meditation can reduce stress, anxiety and depression and improve wellness and the ability to cope with disease, he said.

“We talk about meditation as being a core pillar of wellness for all of us,” Ross said.

Especially now, as many people’s mental health is strained by the anxieties and uncertainties surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, meditation can help everyone find a sense of peace, he said.

“When something gets taken away from you, that causes grief,” she said.

“People are trying to function in this new way of being, and that causes anxiety ... for that it would be wonderful to use these techniques to ground yourself every day.”

Dohrmann, Ross and Thompson agree that meditation can be extremely beneficial for those finding themselves frequently worried.

When anxious, “you’re like a bag in a windstorm,” Dohrmann said. “You’re not very rational, you can’t think clearly. Grounding yourself brings you back to (earth).”

Steps to meditation While meditation can be practiced anywhere, it’s best to find a quiet place to sit or lie down, Dohrmann said.

“Ideally you’re sitting comfortably on a cushion or against a wall or in a chair — with feet on the ground, not hanging,” she said. “And then just kind of rest your hands where they feel comfortable.”

“Being body-aware and breath-aware can really be taught even to a 1-year-old,” she said.

For children this age, Dohrmann recommends parents hold the child in front of them and take deep, calming breaths, she said.

“They will mirror that and it will help them calm down,” she said.

With older kids, parents can sit in front of them and hold their hands as they breathe together, she said.

“It helps because attachment and touch calm anxiety,” Dohrmann said. “When in crisis ... they don’t have an adult brain to calm down. They need touch from a steady adult.”

Teenagers tend to do well with guided meditations, which are available through smartphone apps or Youtube videos.

These strategies don’t need to consume much time — they can be as brief as one minute, Dohrmann said.

“Everybody has a minute,” she said.

Once comfortable, the first thing to do is simply become aware of your body, thoughts and breaths.

“The only thing they need to learn how to do is shift their focus to the breath,” Ross said. “Every meditation practice has the foundational component of bringing awareness to the present moment.”

After that, the goal is to identify whenever a distraction comes up.

“It’s about recognizing when you’re not present and learning that you have the ability to bring your awareness back to something occurring right now,” Ross said. “That’s why the breath is so powerful, it can only occur right now.”

Often, beginners will notice their brain coming up with all sorts of distractions.

Have I finished the laundry?

Does the dog need a walk?

What will I make for dinner?

Thoughts and feelings like these are normal and will likely always come up. The hallmark of meditation isn’t halting these, but learning to recognize them and then return to the breath, Ross said.

It can be useful to identify where in the body the breath is most intensely

felt, whether that be in the belly, the nostrils or the chest, Thompson said. He also recommends trying to identify when there is a long or short breath.

“That gets the mind to calm down,” Thompson said.

Dohrmann suggests beginning with a simple technique of inhaling for four seconds, then exhaling for four seconds, repeating the breath pattern for two minutes.

No failure, just awareness Many people say the reason they haven’t tried meditation is because they can’t find the time, Ross said.

“The reality is … it can be as simple as three to five minutes a day,” he said.

It’s best to try to fit in a brief meditation every day, Dohrmann said, “But whenever you can do it is also best.”

Another reason people give for not wanting to try out meditation is because they worry they won’t do it correctly. But Thompson, Ross and Dohrmann agree there really isn’t a downside to trying.

“There really is no failure in meditation, there’s just observation and awareness,” Ross said.

Thompson points out that even if things don’t go according to plan, it still isn’t a failure.

“Worst-case scenario,” Thompson said, “you fall asleep.”

ACC gets creative as diverse courses go online

As Arapahoe Community College works to move diverse course offerings online amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the transition is easier for some than others.

The Littleton-based community college, which serves more than 11,000 students, faces the task of developing distance learning to meet the needs of everyone from high schoolers to single parents to elderly students, in classes that run the gamut from English and math to automotive and phlebotomy.

Thankfully, the school had a good head start, said Rebecca Woulfe, the college’s vice president of instruction and provost.

ACC decided to include online components with every class during the swine flu epidemic of 2009, Woulfe said, including online gradebooks, syllabi and faculty contacts. About a quarter of the school’s courses already have online-only versions.

The decision to close the ACC campus came gradually in March, according to the college’s website. By March 25, with a statewide stay-at-home order issued, the college announced all courses would go online for the foreseeable future.

The challenge now, Woulfe said, is to figure out how to move hands-on education online.

“We’ve got science faculty doing labs in their kitchens and videotaping them,” Woulfe said. “It’s not the same, but we’re trying to get creative.”

The college’s career and technical education programs are a heavier lift.

Students studying phlebotomy have to practice drawing blood from real arms, so they’re stuck with incompletes for this semester. The plan is to bring them back to complete their coursework over the summer — if campus is open by then.

The school is closed “until further notice,” and the spring graduation ceremony has been indefinitely deferred.

Other hands-on programs are scrambling to make the conversion. ACC’s police academy, which is accredited

by numerous Colorado police departments, is moving online, but hasn’t yet settled on how to accomplish firearms skills tests and driving tests.

Perhaps ironically during the pandemic, with hospitals increasingly strained, ACC’s medical training programs are struggling to get students out the door and into clinical settings.

The nursing program, which trains both certified nursing assistants and registered nurses, is finding itself in the lurch as students are unable to complete clinical and practicum hours in medical facilities that are now barring admittance to anyone but patients and licensed personnel.

The program landed a big windfall on April 3, as the state Department of Regulatory Agencies agreed to allow virtual simulations to complete the CNA program, said Jennifer Blanchard, who heads ACC’s nursing program.

Now, Blanchard said, Colorado’s community colleges are lobbying the state nursing board to approve a similar waiver for the RN program. If the waiver isn’t approved, RN students will have to wait until summer or longer to complete their clinical hours.

“Our nursing students feel like they’re sitting ducks,” Blanchard said.

“They’re eager to get out in the field.

Some of them have jobs waiting for them this spring. They’ve been working toward this a long time.”

Blanchard said it’s critical that nursing students receive high-quality education, and she’s confident virtual simulations can accomplish that.

“Not every nursing student in a clinical setting is getting high-quality hands-on training,” she said. “With virtual simulations, we can ensure they’re being put to the test in a variety of challenging situations.”

There’s another snag: if the state doesn’t approve the waiver, students who take incompletes this semester will be guaranteed slots in upcoming semesters — which will set back the program, which typically operates with a long wait list. The medical field has a huge need for new nurses, and a backup would slow down the pipeline

into a vital industry, Blanchard said.

But nurses are resilient, dedicated and creative, Blanchard said, and she’s confident the program will find a way.

“There was a lot of anxiety in our students, but after the first week of classes, things are improving,” Blanchard said. “They’re bold. They’re ready for a new and unique way to learn, and we’re here to give them what they need.”

Though some fields are seeing their coursework more easily transition online, challenges remain.

English faculty were well-positioned to shift online, said Monica Fuglei, the chair of the English department, but there is tumult in students’ lives.

“I don’t know if they have housing insecurity, food insecurity or job insecurity,” Fuglei said.

“Students have lost their jobs.

They’re suddenly finding themselves home schooling their own kids. When you have such immediate needs, school is the first thing that gets set aside.”

Now is not the time to analyze whether online learning provides as robust of an education as classroom learning, she said.

“Don’t think of this as a pattern for the long term,” Fuglei said. “This is a crisis. We’re acting in a triage scenario. What are the distilled skills we can give to students, and what are the simplest ways to communicate those?”

ACC has done an exemplary job of meeting diverse student needs, Fuglei said, ranging from passing out laptops and wifi hotspots to students without internet access at home, to online counseling and connecting students to food pantries. Other departments, like the library, student success center and writing center, are stepping up too.

Fuglei said she’s working to weave the pandemic into her own composition class.

“We’ve been talking about it in class since the beginning of the semester,” she said. “I’ve been teaching for over 20 years, and any time there’s a big crisis, for the next few years my students process it in their writing. I suspect I’ll be reading about this experience for years to come.”

District attorney addresses concerns about stay-at-home order STAFF REPORT

Legitimate public health and law enforcement officials will not ask for COVID-19 related paperwork, according to a news release from 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Reports about police impersonators and other concerns about the stay-athome order have increased concerns and questions from residents, the release said.

While civil and criminal penalties do exist for violating public health orders, the primary goal of law enforcement is to encourage voluntary compliance.

Law enforcement and public health officials are tasked with investigating possible violations of the orders, but if they question you, you do not need to provide paperwork or documentation that your travel is essential, according to the release. There are no check-

points because of COVID-19.

In one case, the release said, a woman told Aurora police she was stopped by an impersonator questioning her reason for travel March 25 near East Sixth Avenue and Havana Street.

She was on her way home from her job at an essential business just after midnight.

Police investigated her claim. When none of the nearby surveillance cameras corroborated her story, the woman confessed to police she had made it up, according to the release. She was worried that her employer was not issuing “travel papers” and wanted to use the fabricated incident to pressure her employer.

Some of the other Colorado incidents reported as impersonators have also turned out to be fabrications or misunderstandings, the release said.

Residents with concerns that a stop is

not bona fide are asked to call 911 immediately from a safe place.

While peace officer impersonators are rare, they do exist. The 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office has charged six people with that crime over the last three years, the release stated.

“These are trying times on many levels for all of us. We need to work together to encourage everyone to follow the public health orders that are in effect,” District Attorney George Brauchler said in the news release.

“We need to — and we will — support our law enforcement officers in this time. Making false reports of crimes is lying, wastes resources and weakens our system. Pretending to be law enforcement and usurping their authority for any purpose is an attack on the legitimacy of our system. Neither will be tolerated in our community.”

Turn your garden into a thriving success with help from the master gardeners at CSU Extension

n Colorado, there’s a program comprised of 2,500 master gardeners across all 64 counties that develop science-based research and information, making it where you don’t have to spend hours upon hours researching how to develop and be successful at growing a garden.

Through the Colorado State University (CSU) Extension program, certified experts do the research, planting and studies to help you be successful in growing any kind of plant no matter where you live in the state. The master gardeners are available by phone, email and in person (when home-based orders are not in place). These gardeners can diagnose problem soils, identify viruses and insect issues through photos and lab testing.

“When it comes to the Extension program, we like to say why Google it?” said John Murgel, the CSU extension program associate for horticulture in Douglas County. “A Google search provides crazy results that takes you all over the map.

With Extension, you get one-on-one interaction, fact sheets on everything local. It’s an awesome resource.”

All of the master gardeners with the Extension program are certified horticulturist. Through a variety of outlets, including blogs, they provide help to gardeners with watering, planting guidelines, understanding sunlight, Colorado’s crazy weather patterns and explain what the elevation here means to seeds you put into the soil.

Patti O’Neil, horticulturist and urban food systems coordinator for CSU Extension in Jefferson County, said they want gardens to thrive and want residents to know they are here to help at every stage of gardening from planning, planting, growing to tips on how to store food after the harvest.

“One of our biggest fears is that a resident starts a garden without assistance, they fail and never come back to it again,” she said. “We want gardeners to plant vegetables, flowers and everything. We are here to make any garden, whether it’s here on the front range or up in the mountains, succeed.”

O’Neil said when home-based rules are not in

place, the Jefferson County offices can provide inperson diagnosis of plant problems and test soil in the lab. Classes are also offered in most counties.

With soil, we stress that it’s the most important aspect of getting started,” O’Neil said. “You can’t always just dig in some dirt and be successful.

We test soil in labs and can provide guidance on nutrients needed to get you started.”

O’Neil said with 155 master gardeners available in Jefferson County alone, they are always on hand to answer questions, help diagnose and solve problems and provide information.

“Call us with any questions,” O’Neil said. “Don’t be afraid to asks a lot of questions. We want to help with all of it.”

Murgel said when it comes to weather and landscape, Colorado is diverse. The master gardeners with CSU Extension take into account all Colorado landscapes and provide fact sheets on what to plant and when to avoid frost, weather issues or what to consider in regards to altitude.

“We understand that now isn’t a good time to plant tomatoes or squash, you want to wait for the heat,” Murgel said. “But radish doesn’t always do as well when it’s overheated, which means now is the time to plant some of your vegetables. Our websites and master gardeners can provide all of that information that is local to the area residents live.”

The CSU Extension program was established

by Congress in 1914, authorizing land-grant universities to get research-based information out to the public. Besides landscape and gardening the certified experts provide free information in agriculture, 4-H development, animal health, drought conditions, renewable energy, natural resources and food safety and health.

“The CSU Extension’s gardening programs are a great community resource,” he said. “Gardening is an important activity for so many reasons. It connects us to our agricultural history and heritage, and the health benefits are important too. Being outside in the garden helps us both physically and mentally. ardening is a great way to improve the community, beautify a yard or provide great-tasting fruits and vegetables. However, going beyond the roots, gardening has proven to be beneficial both mentally and physically.

Studies continue to show that gardening goes beyond the plants and provides true physical and mental health benefits.

John Murgel, a horticulturist with the Colorado State University Extension program in Douglas County, said for him, gardening provides connection to human history and human life.

“Gardening connects me to the outdoors, to the plants and wild birds and native bees that live in my neighborhood,” he said. “Depending on which plants I’m using at the moment, (gardening) can be everything from childhood memories from family heirloom plants or veggies to people in other ages and in other continents going back centuries or further. They give me deep perspective.”

On the physical side, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) says gardening is a great way to get exercise.

Gardening can decrease risk of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, heart disease, stroke,

depression, colon cancer and premature death.

Some of the top benefits of gardening include: A natural source of Vitamin D: Vitamin D increases calcium levels, which provides support for bones and the immune system. For older adults, increased Vitamin D can help improve serum levels.

Reducing stress: Gardening has proven to be a calming activity for those suffering from anxiety. Whether gardening alone, or with a group, digging in the dirt, planting, growing and harvesting can help create a calm.

Good exercise: Gardening is a good way to increase physical activity without feeling the pain of a full workout. The CDC recommends being active for at least 2.5 hours a week to strengthen muscles and improve bone health and circulation.

A good after-retirement activity: For many aging adults, retirement can become lonely. Gardening has served as a good hobby and way to engage with neighbors and feel a sense of accomplishment as the garden grows.

Decrease in dementia risk: A variety of studies have found that gardening helps the mind, decreasing the risk of dementia through physical activity.

Creates a healthier diet: By growing your own food, which means vegetables, gardeners tend to have better diets, which improves weight, diabetes risk, and lower blood pressure.

Child care enrollment takes hard hit Some centers still open, others suspend operations during response to virus

“Sanitizing like crazy” is just a part of life at child care centers, said Pam Kenney, director of Thomas Learning Centers. But in the wake of COVID-19’s arrival, the past weeks have seen Denver area daycares take a variety of extra precautions to make sure their kids go home germ-free.

At Denver Child Care Center, teachers are working to help younger children stay spaced out even when they don’t understand social distancing.

At Thomas Learning Centers, which has locations in Westminster and Lakewood, students are avoiding sharing toys, such as by using their own labeled bags of Play-Doh each day.

At both centers, ritual sanitizings of surfaces and toys have turned into multiple rounds of disinfecting, and every child goes through a quick wellness check before entering the classroom.

The Denver, Westminster and Lakewood centers are part of the state’s Emergency Child Care Collaborative, which the state government launched March 23 to allow some child care facilities to stay open amid stay-at-home orders. Many other daycares in the area are also part of the initiative, which aims to provide daycare for essential workers, including those who work essential jobs from home and those who are continuing to work in person. The collaborative also covers the full cost of child care tuition for these families.

For Alexis Archuleta, an essential worker with Denver Human Services who has two sons attending Denver Child Care Center, “I wasn’t sure I’d be able to work from home if the center didn’t stay open,” she said.

“This really is the only feasible option. I couldn’t really have my boys around while I’m talking to the people I’m assisting,” she said. “The center is so open in helping people that need it. I appreciate they’re taking precautions and that my kids are safe.”

For some child care facilities, the ability to continue doing business has offered hope that the centers can weather the storm during a time when more parents are staying home with their kids than ever, reducing a widespread need for child care.

But the measure hasn’t been able to eliminate all of the centers’ challenges. Even with some new referrals coming in to Denver Child Care Center and some regulars continuing to attend each day, enrollment has dropped significantly, said Rich Silvas, executive of operations. In turn, the daycare has had to cut staff members’ hours by about 50%, he said.

“Our staff is our family. We’re always worried about each other and it is difficult to say we’ve cut half of your work schedule, because that’s half of your income,” he said. “It’s hardship for everybody.”

On April 3, just four children were in attendance and the daycare has also cut staff hours, employing just one teacher a day instead of two.

However, the center is also committed to staying open for those who don’t have other options.

“We’re just trying to help our existing families, who are very appreciative,” Kenney said, “and trying to be part of the community.”

Other centers have been forced to close, not because they aren’t authorized to stay open, but because they don’t have the enrollment to make the money necessary to stay open. That’s been the case for KidsTown Drop-In Child Care, which has locations in Highlands Ranch, Parker and the Smoky Hill area.

A fourth KidsTown location, in Castle Rock, closed at the end of March because of the financial loss it has incurred from the coronavirus.

Regional director Hollie Wilson said because families are typically referred to full-time centers before part-time centers like KidsTown, the daycare’s enrollment dropped by about 99% with the spread of the coronavirus, forcing the centers to close.

Without steady revenue coming in, “we’re working with our business association or our local banks to make sure we do have that line of credit,” she said. “Our hope is to open our doors as soon as possible.”

In the meantime, the centers haven’t lost touch with the families they serve on a daily basis, Wilson said.

“We’ve been in contact with our regulars to ask if there’s anything they need and we’re going to be sharing

books, crafts and sensory activities on Facebook,” she said. “We’re taking the next three to four weeks and we’re going to step it up (online) so this can continue to be a support even after we open again.”

Back in Denver, Silvas is likewise

looking forward to the pandemic coming to an end and business returning to normal.

“We know we are going to fill up right away when this is over,” he said.

“And the big question is, how long is this going to last?”

Colorado businesses face warnings, adjustments Some stores, including Hobby Lobby, raise red flags amid COVID-19 restrictions

A local bicycle shop seeing more demand. Record stores leaning on mail service just to survive. A large craft store chain defying the government and staying open amid the pandemic.

COVID-19 has drawn a line in the sand for businesses — critical vs. noncritical, as deemed by the state — and it’s a distinction that has cost thousands of jobs across Colorado as the state’s restrictions on which businesses can operate remain in place for at least the next few weeks.

“It’s been really tough, honestly. We had to let most of our staff go,” said Michael Baca, a manager at Black and Read book and music store in Arvada.

The shop temporarily closed a few days before the state ordered “noncritical” businesses to reduce their in-person workforce by 50% by March 24. Then came Colorado’s stay-at-home order, tightening the grip even further and effectively closing many noncritical businesses altogether.

Bicycle repair shops landed on the long list of critical industries, along with health care, infrastructure, agriculture, grocery stores and many more — a turn of luck that’s working out well for The Bicycle Shack in Arvada.

“We’ve actually seen a pretty big influx of — I don’t know if you’d call it ‘panic bicycle buying,’” laughed Brian Shuey, a manager at the shop, who guessed that the bump in demand might be the normal rush the store sees in spring amid tax returns.

Although the shop can stay open, it has taken steps to reduce the number of people inside at one time — the stay-at-home order requires businesses to keep people at least 6 feet apart as much as possible.

Then there was Hobby Lobby, a craft store giant that stayed open in spite of the state’s order, arguing it provided “essential products” amid the pandemic in an April 3 statement. The company received a letter dated April 1

The state recommends local public health agencies or local law enforcement first reach out to the business to seek voluntary compliance, according to a fact sheet by the Colorado Attorney General’s Office.

Coloradans also can file a report with that office at covid19@coag.gov if local law enforcement or a local public health agency is unresponsive.

“For the avoidance of doubt, and as you have been previously notified, Hobby Lobby is not a ‘critical business’ and is not otherwise exempt,” the letter says.

‘We’re hanging in there’ The staff at Black and Read is smaller than many other businesses that have been forced to close to the public, but the music shop is still feeling the impact.

“It’s been rough — we’re hanging in there,” said Baca, whose shop let go of about five employees and told them to file for unemployment assistance.

He hopes to bring them back when the economy starts to revive.

The employees still on board saw their hours cut, and some come to the shop to list items for sale online.

“We’ll ship to anyone we could,” said Baca, who uses platforms such as Amazon to keep sales afloat.

Under the state’s order, noncritical businesses are allowed to perform “minimum basic operations,” such as building and inventory maintenance, payroll and activities that facilitate employees working from home, said Gary Sky, spokesman for Tri-County Health Department, which covers Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties.

Tri-County was seeking clarification from the state regarding noncritical businesses filling delivery orders, Sky said.

Record shops aren’t considered critical businesses under Colorado’s order, but if a business is closed to customers, it can still operate, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. At least one other record shop in the west Denver metro area had announced its plan to continue mail service.

“The orders cannot anticipate every circumstance, which is why the governor has stressed the importance of following the spirit of the order and not seeking loopholes,” the department said in a statement. “A single person working alone in a workspace that is closed to other people would not violate the order.”

Other stores of all kinds around the metro area have shut down for now, such as Forever Flowers and Gifts, a family-owned business in east Centen-

nial along Smoky Hill Road.

“We are all healthy and safe as of the close of business on Wednesday, March 25,” a voicemail recording for the business said. “We sincerely have the best wishes for the health, safety and prosperity of all our customers. We look forward to serving again serving your floral needs whenever we are able to reopen.”

Warnings, voluntary compliance Hobby Lobby is one of the most highprofile businesses to defy stay-at-home orders, and the letter it received from the state Attorney General’s Office April 1 directed all of the company’s Colorado locations to immediately close.

At the Hobby Lobby in Parker on April 1, a co-manager said the store was open but that by the next day it was to close based on instructions from his superior.

What about school resources?

Under the order, Coloradans can still get meals or collect materials for online class from schools or related institutions.

What happens when stay-at-home order ends?

The order is set to expire April 26.

But even if it is lifted on that date, life won’t fully snap back to normal until there are medical advancements regarding the virus, such as a vaccine, Gov. Jared Polis said at an April 8 news conference.

“The guidance around how we do business and live our lives in a safe way, because the COVID-19 virus will still be with us after April 26, will be issued before April 26,” Polis said.

State officials are considering how restaurants can reopen in some way, whether it’s at the end of April or later, Polis said.

Lifting the order likely doesn’t mean going to a crowded concert at the Pepsi Center or going to a crowded bar and dance club anytime soon, Polis told reporters two days later.

In March, there was confusion over the actual cost of a COVID-19 test. “Testing is free,” a March 10 state news release said.

The cost of medical visits related to getting tested was a different story.

Now, because of recent federal legislation, people with any kind of private health insurance should have free access to the COVID-19 test — along with any doctor visits associated with getting the test — with no co-pays, deductibles or coinsurance charged, according to the Colorado Division of Insurance.

Coloradans should check with their health-care provider to be sure, though.

For Coloradans with Medicare, all of the costs are covered if a doctor orders a COVID-19 test, according to the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Under Colorado’s Medicaid program — Health First Colorado — and the Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+), all the costs of testing and the doctors’ visits associated with getting tested are covered, according to the state Department of Health Care Policy and Financing.

Uninsured Coloradans should contact that office at 303-866-2993 to ask about options. To apply for Medicaid and Child Health Plan Plus, visit colorado.gov/peak.

COVID-19 should have immunity, said Ryan, the health department director.

But the full picture is not yet understood, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Patients with MERS-CoV — another coronavirus that causes severe respiratory illness — are unlikely to be re-infected shortly after they recover, but it is not yet known whether similar immune protection will be observed for COVID-19 patients, the CDC’s website says.

Will I get pulled over by police?

Violating Colorado’s statewide stay-at-home order could result in a fine of up to $1,000 and imprisonment in a county jail for up to one year.

But Coloradans likely won’t see law enforcement conduct road checkpoints or pull over drivers or pedestrians to enforce the order.

When asked about such measures, Willis said the state encourages voluntary compliance.

The 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, which covers Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties, said this in a news release: “Law enforcement and public health officials are tasked with investigating possible violations of the orders, but if they question you, you do not need to provide any paperwork or documentation that your travel is essential. There are no checkpoints because of COVID-19.”

Can I get a test?

The state is working toward mass

testing capability to more accurately quarantine individuals “instead of quarantining an entire society,” Polis has said.

Such an effort could take weeks or perhaps months to be ready, he said in late March.

In the meantime, the state health department has reminded residents that at-risk individuals — such as hospital patients, health-care workers and some others — are first in line for scarce testing supplies.

“If you have only mild symptoms, self-isolate and don’t wait for a test,” Scott Bookman, incident commander for the department, said in a March 30 news release.

With gatherings banned, options dwindle for funeral services Metro area families can choose to livestream or postpone

While losing a loved one at any time is difficult, planning a funeral has been made even more complicated as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to halt gatherings.

With the statewide stay-at-home measure aimed at stopping the virus spread in place, Denver-area funeral homes are working to find innovative ways to help clients celebrate their family member’s or friend’s life without a public service.

Many funeral homes, such as Dignity Memorial, are offering a livestream of funeral services so that more than immediate family members can view the event.

“Grief is an emotion with a lot of tears and hugging and hand-holding,” said Matt Whaley, Denver’s market director for Dignity Memorial. “It has been really, really different for us in the last few weeks.”

For more traditional burials, some families are opting to hold an immediate, private burial but plan for a public memorial once the order has been lifted, said Michael Wellensiek, director of operations for Horan & McConaty. Postponing can have its own difficulties, however.

“No memorial at the time of death postpones grief,” he said. “To have a little finality in that moment is important.”

Horan & McConaty has seven locations including Arvada, Centennial, Lakewood and Thornton.

Wellensiek worries that some families will delay a public service only to eventually decide not to go through with one at all “and miss that opportunity to have people come support them,” he said.

“For people who are not allowed to have a ceremony, it’s difficult,” he said. “They’re going through the

Many family members of veterans are also choosing to delay the memorial services for their loved ones at Fort Logan National Cemetery, administrative officer David Roberts said.

“A lot of our volunteer support agencies that provide honors are not coming out for services,” he said.

For veteran services at the cemetery, honors can include traditions like a firing party or an honor bell. The cemetery is continuing to accommodate burials and is cataloging the families who wish to have a memorial with honors later.

The industry has changed in other ways too, Harwood said. Instead of folks coming into the funeral home to make arrangements, they’re asking to do so virtually, he said.

Funeral homes, as a business deemed essential under the state order, are also working to keep their employees safe as they continue to come to work. That means social distancing, avid cleaning and frequent hand-washing for the employees.

“The staff has a level of fear,” Wellensiek said. “They’re dealing with deceased people who died from the virus and family members who were maybe exposed.”

The employees — like those in many industries — are under added stress due to the virus, he said.

“We’ve really focused on also caring for our team,” he said. “Our biggest concern is if our staff gets sick, then we can’t serve the public.”

While funeral homes have been forced to change their policies, services and interactions with clients, most agree that the families they work with have handled the additional hardship very well.

“They’re frustrated like all of us that we can’t open these services up to more people,” Whaley said. “But families have been extremely understanding.”

Tri-County Health Department has resolved many reports of violations through education and voluntary compliance, according to Sky. “We have received 244 complaints, and most are able to be resolved over the phone,” Sky said April 3. “We have issued two formal warnings to businesses who have failed to come into compliance with the public health order.”

There were no state basketball champions crowned this season because of the COVID-19 threat that ended competition late in the playoffs in March. But there was plenty of time before that point for the best and brightest to emerge.

To that end, Colorado Community Media brings you the annual unveiling of our All-South Metro Basketball Teams.

Student-athletes were eligible for the recognition if they attended schools in the Douglas County and Littleton districts, as well as Valor Christian, Lutheran, Regis Jesuit, Englewood, Cherry Creek, Grandview, Smoky Hill, Eaglecrest and Cherokee Trail high schools. The selections were made by the CCM sports staff, with input from area coaches.

Some golf courses doing brisk business Links stay busy as facilities open to public after shift in stay-at-home protocol

Golfers have flocked to courses that are open during the COVID-19 pandemic, but many links remain closed.

South Suburban Parks and Recreation, due to Gov. Jared Polis’ stay-athome order, has closed all playgrounds, golf courses, driving ranges and related golf facilities, tennis/pickleball

courts, basketball courts and picnic areas.

That means there has been no activity at South Suburban Golf Course, Family Sports Golf Course, Lone Tree Golf Club & Hotel, and Littleton Golf and Tennis Club.

“We’re just keeping our golf courses closed for the safety of our community,” said Bill Ramsey who is the manager of golf and head golf professional at the Lone Tree course. “We’re really looking at the community. The safety of the community is our number one priority and that’s why we are closed.

“I think all that are closed are municipal and special district golf courses, and the ones that are privately owned

and open to the public are the ones that are open right now.”

According to the Colorado Golf Association, among the Denver-area courses that have announced on their websites that they are open to the public after shutting down briefly are Riverdale in Brighton, Green Valley Ranch in Denver, CommonGround in Aurora, The Links Golf Course in Highlands Ranch, Todd Creek in Thornton, The Broadlands in Broomfield, Fossil Trace in Golden, Arrowhead in the Roxborough area, Colorado National in Erie, Raccoon Creek just west of Littleton, University of Denver Golf Club in Highlands Ranch and Plum Creek in Castle Rock.

The CGA reported on its website that late last month about 70 golf courses in Colorado were closed for coronavirusrelated reasons. A majority of the public courses that remain closed are municipal or district courses. Both Topgolf locations in Centennial and Thornton are closed.

“Some courses are open and some are not,” said CGA Executive Director Ed Mate. “The way the policies are written by the regulation agencies has caused the inconsistency.”

He said golfers who are still going to courses are “breaking the containment in a safe way.”

Secretary of State sets up remote notary process STAFF REPORT

Following an executive order, the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office has set up a process that will allow access to notary services without inperson contact.

“Stopping the spread of COVID-19 while still providing the services Coloradans rely on has been our main focus over the last two weeks,” Secretary of State Jena Griswold said in a news release. “Remote notarization is the latest of these important services.”

Gov. Jared Polis issued an executive order March 28 that ordered the temporary suspension of the personal appearance requirement before notarial officers to perform notarizations due to the presence of coronavirus disease in Colorado.

Courses that are open must follow guidelines set by local, district or state health agencies.

Guidelines differ from course to course but most include walking only for a round with no golf carts, removal of flag sticks and bunker rakes, encouraging proper social distancing, payment for golf rounds online in advance, no water jugs on the course, no in-restaurant dining, promoting hand washing and use of hand sanitizer, and no lingering in the clubhouse.

Matt Goudy, of Plum Creek, has never seen anything like the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I’ve been working here for 10 years and it’s pretty unique,” said Goudy.

“Golfers understand the social distancing, some follow the governor’s recommendation to wear masks and some don’t, but they are not high-fiving, hugging or touching.

“I would say it is working well and the people are generally pretty happy to get outside. The pace of play is really quite remarkable. If you think about a golf cart, most golfers drive to one ball, drive to the next ball and go hunt the golf ball.

When they are alone they just go to their golf ball and hit it. It is an interesting time. You see a lot of people that haven’t walked in a while and they look tired.”
