The Living Statues and Structures event — part of Arapahoe Libraries’ never-ending schedule of activities for kids, teens and adults — brought young children and pre-teens together and pitted teams against each other to create “human versions” of famous historical structures.

‘It had a big impact on my life’ State Rep. Patrick Neville, a student at Columbine in 1999, fights for gun owners’ rights

Ask Tom Mauser about his shoes.

Mauser’s son Daniel was killed at Columbine High School in 1999. In the years that followed, Mauser became an outspoken advocate for stronger gun laws.

And through every event, every rally, every speech, if you look at Mauser’s feet, you’ll see the same pair of sneakers.

“These are the shoes Daniel was wearing when he died,” Mauser said.

“We wear the same size. This way, I feel like Daniel is walking with me.”

Before Daniel’s death, Mauser said he wasn’t much of an activist. He’d write the occasional letter to the editor, he said, but Columbine threw him into the public eye.

Mauser said he was haunted by a brief conversation he had with his son two weeks before he was killed.

“Daniel was on the debate team, and after a conversation with his teammates, he said, ‘Dad, did you know there are loopholes in the Brady Bill?’

I blew it off and said, ‘No, Daniel, I didn’t know that.’”

The bill requires background checks for gun sales. The Columbine killers obtained their guns through a friend who bought them at a gun show, according to news reports from the time, circumventing the law.

“I felt I had to act,” Mauser said.

“I brought a sign with a picture of my son, and 400 fliers to pass out,” Mauser said. “Thousands of people showed up. I had no idea.”

An organizer asked him to speak to the crowd.

“It took me out of my shell,” Mauser said. “I’ve never been the same since.”

Mauser is now a spokesman and board member for Ceasefire Colorado, a group that advocates for stricter gun laws.

“We have to take this seriously,” Mauser said. “We have a shameful level of gun violence in America, and we have to do something about it.”

Closing loopholes in gun-sale laws is a high priority for Mauser, as are universal background checks. Mauser also supports the recently passed “red flag” bill, a controversial measure that would allow judges to order guns taken from people believed to pose a threat to themselves or others. He would also like to see laws that prohibit felons from owning guns extended to people convicted of misdemeanors involving violence.

Mauser said he’s all too familiar with arguments against him from gun rights advocates.

“I love responding to the logic or illogic of my opponents,” Mauser said.

“By and large, the majority of Americans support the right to bear arms.

Patrick Neville was a 15-year-old sophomore at Columbine High School when two armed students walked into the building and killed 13 people, then themselves. He was on school grounds but outside when the shooting began, he said.

He doesn’t go into detail about what he saw and heard in those moments. There are survivors with more compelling stories than his, he said, and the events of that day have been widely reported. Besides, recounting the story time and time again is “exhausting,” he said, particularly leading up to the massacre’s 20th anniversary.

But make no mistake: “It had a big impact on my life,” Neville said.

Today, Neville, 35, is a Republican state representative and the House minority leader. The Castle Rock resident is among Colorado’s leading voices on gun-owners’ rights and stood in opposition to the recently passed “red flag” bill that allows firearms to be temporarily taken away from people deemed a significant threat to themselves or others.

April 20, 1999 was a blur, but it wholly changed his life trajectory, Neville said on a late-March day at his office in the state Capitol.

Later in his collegiate career, at the University of Colorado Denver, it would influence his perspective on gun rights.

His most vivid memory of the day of the tragedy is of students gathering at an elementary school following the shooting. First, there was a crowd, but as buses came to evacuate them, it slowly dwindled.

Then, the father of a student asked if Neville had seen his son.

Neville had not.

He’d known the father who approached him, and his son, since the third grade. The boys played baseball together and served as captains of their team as their fathers coached.

By high school, Neville was making all the wrong choices — in his words, he was a “punk.” Meanwhile, the man’s son “was making all the right decisions in life.” The two had drifted apart as a result.

“Once the names came out, he never got to see his son again,” Neville said, declining to name the father in what he called a political-

But that’s where the survivor’s guilt caught up with him, Neville said. Students who were excelling died that day. It inspired the teenager to change his life course.

He would go on to serve in the U.S. Army and deploy to Iraq, which impacted his life similarly to how Columbine did. He watched families mourn lost loved ones and he buried his friends. It called to mind going to the funerals of his peers after Columbine.

Then in 2014, he became the state representative for House District 45, encompassing Castle Rock, Castle Pines and portions of unincorporated Douglas County. He’s now in his third term.

Neville said he didn’t have strong opinions on gun rights until college, when he received his conceal-carry permit.

“At the time, it was illegal for me to conceal carry in my college classroom,” he said, “and if there was one place that I really felt uncomfortable or vulnerable it was sitting in a classroom.”

Colorado now allows permit holders to carry firearms on highereducation campuses.

This legislative session, Neville introduced a bill to allow someone with a concealed-carry permit to carry a firearm on public elementary, middle, junior high and high school grounds.

David Walcher had just gotten back from a celebratory breakfast and was on his way to lunch with a fellow member of the Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office.

Walcher, a member of the National Sheriffs’ Association’s subcommittee for preventing school violence.

Schools across the country have likely implemented certain security measures, but Walcher said they shouldn’t become “prisons.”

“Maybe it’s schools, maybe it’s law enforcement, maybe it’s mental health, maybe it’s parents, maybe it’s the entertainment industry” that all need to be part of a solution, Walcher added.

Friends, family, teachers and others who come into contact often with students should watch for “red flags” in a student’s life, Walcher said.

“When you see a kid start to change their behavior, be less social, grades plummet, or they’re in sports and then they stop, or when mom and dad get divorced, maybe they become loners,” Walcher said, adding that bullying should be watched for, too. “Some of those tipping points that drive them away from everyone … that’s where the prevention is so critical.”

He hopes people understand that incidents like Columbine can happen in their communities. The problem isn’t going away, he said, but incidents can be averted.

“Could we have a more positive effect on this?” Walcher said. “Absolutely, absolutely.”

This means the muscles in the legs are no longer getting enough blood flow during exercise, or even general walking. On rare occasions, the pain can also be felt in the arms.

MacDonald said PVD can be treated through a variety of methods

such as inserting stents and balloons to open up the arteries, which significantly improves blood flow.

Since the primary complaint from patients is leg pain, MacDonald said PVD is an under-diagnosed condition because symptoms are similar to arthritis. Doctors might overlook it, or not consider running the tests to see if it is in fact PVD causing the issues.

MacDonald said patients thinking they might have PVD can head over to South Denver Cardiology, or they can ask their regular-care physician to run an ABI (ankle-brachial index) test.

“These are simple tests to order,

and the results can be determined in a matter of minutes,” MacDonald said. “Any physician can order these tests. These tests can help a doctor differentiate between the pain being caused by arthritis or if it’s really PVD.” With a clear diagnosis, MacDonald said South Denver Cardiology moves forward as it does with all patients.

They tailor a plan of action to each individual patient. Because it’s about treating the entire patient, MacDonald said they will treat the PVD, but also work on nutrition, exercise plans and making sure that improving quality of life is a top priority.

Local National Alliance on Mental Illness affiliate honors students at upcoming event STAFF REPORT

Six high school and college students are receiving scholarships from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Arapahoe and Douglas counties for their exemplary dedication and commitment to important work in the behavioral health field.

The scholarships will be presented at the Behavioral Health Seeds of Hope Scholarship Awards Event on Thursday, April 25, from 6-8 p.m. at the Hilton Denver Inverness, 200 Inverness Drive W., near Centennial.

The event is open to the public.

Littleton Adventist Hospital celebrates 30 years

Facility has grown into renowned neuroscience and trauma center

Littleton Adventist Hospital celebrates its 30th birthday this year, but there are other numbers that tell the story of Littleton’s hospital better: More than a million emergency room visits, 50,000 babies delivered, and 165,000 surgeries conducted.

Hundreds of doctors, volunteers and local dignitaries crowded the soaring atrium of the hospital on April 3 to mark 30 years since April 1989, when Littleton welcomed its first full-service hospital.

Helping the hospital grow has been a great privilege, said Dr. Mark Elliott, the hospital’s medical staff president.

“I graduated from Denver Health residency and started here three months after the hospital opened — it’s been my only job,” Elliott said.

“This place started as a truly small community hospital. Now, we take care of everything — our neuroscience department and trauma center

are second to none in the city.”

The hospital is more than a place of healing, said Susan Thornton, who was mayor of Littleton when the hospital opened.

“They’re a fantastic community partner,” Thornton said. “They support so many entities around town, and they’re a major employer. They’re an enormous economic engine, and I never would have predicted the growth of so many medically related businesses nearby.”

Arapahoe County Sheriff Tyler Brown took the 30th anniversary celebration as a chance to give back to the people who have given so much themselves, and presented a $2,000 check to the Littleton Hospital Foundation to provide health screenings to underprivileged patients.

“Hopefully that check’s even bigger next year,” Brown said.

Interim CEO Geoff Lawton said the first 30 years were just a start.

“To all members of our community, we extend thanks, we reaffirm our commitment to the pursuit of excellence,” Lawton said. “We’ll continue to build upon our tradition of care, to achieve our vision for every community, every neighborhood, every life, whole and healthy for many years to come.”

Douglas County deputies cleared in fatal shooting

The 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office has cleared five Douglas County deputies of any wrongdoing for their involvement in a shooting in November.

After review of the case, Deputy District Attorney Larry Bailey concluded that the use of force by the deputies — who each fired at a vehicle during a high-speed pursuit — was reasonable, justified and appropriate to defend themselves and the public from extreme danger posed by the occupants of the vehicle, according to an April 4 report to Sheriff Tony Spurlock.

“All five deputies who fired during or immediately following the pursuit had reasonable grounds to believe, and did believe, that he or another person was in imminent danger of being killed or of receiving great bodily injury because of the (vehicle’s) occupants’ actions,” Bailey found.

Following a traffic incident in which suspects allegedly fired at deputies the morning of Nov. 27, 19-year-old Nicholas

Ryan, of Aurora, was shot and killed; 21-year-old Jason Bradley Sutton, of Golden, was injured; and Peirce Elliott Langewisch, 20, was taken into custody.

According to the district attorney’s report, Deputy Nicholas Arnone observed a suspicious vehicle — a gray Infinity with a fleet license plate used by many rental companies — run a red light on South Broadway around 3:02 a.m. Earlier that night, Arnone heard that several vehicles in the area had been stolen.

Arnone attempted to pull over the vehicle, which fled on C-470 at speeds reaching 120 mph, the report states. Arnone notified dispatch and other deputies of the pursuit, who joined the chase from various locations in Douglas County.

The vehicle exited C-470 onto Quebec traveling at speeds up to 80 mph, making its way northbound to Yosemite and eastbound to Park Meadows Drive, where an occupant fired shots at Arnone, who then backed off of the vehicle and notified backup, according to the report.

Hard work staying afloat in a sea of fraud

N

ot too long ago, one of our newspaper employees received what looked like an urgent email from the company publisher. He needed some prepaid gift cards, totaling hundreds of dollars, and needed them quick.

The employee went across the street and bought the prepaid cards, eager to help out the boss.

Luckily, that’s as far as things went. The email had been a sham, faked by a computer-savvy scammer.

By now, we’re all aware of the scam in which a supposed Nigerian prince is quite eager to share his great wealth with you, if only you’d give him a down payment, or at least

But those easy-to-spot scams are old news. Nowadays, there are countless newer and more complex con jobs out there, looking to snag even the smartest of us. Email scams look more and more legit, just asking us to click one innocuous link. Sneaky hidden devices are attached to neighborhood ATMs and gas pumps, attempting to skim credit card information.

Fraudsters can be downright brazen. Recently, Jefferson County investigators found that scammers were making it look as if their calls

The scary truth is that scammers don’t even have to trick you directly any more.

On Jan. 4, thieves broke into a storage facility and stole personal information of more than 500 people, including addresses, dates of birth and medication lists from the CVS pharmacy inside Target at 5071 Kipling in Wheat Ridge. That data breach, of course, is dwarfed by the constant stream of data-hacking scandals we hear about constantly. Recently, news broke that your Facebook password is likely compromised. Go change it

now, if you haven’t.

Automation also has created much more scamming.

Unfortunately for us, Colorado seems to be a popular hunting ground for the current crop of crooks. The state ranks second, just slightly behind Nevada, in terms of total complaints about fraudulent robocalls, according to the Federal Trade Commission. In fact, Colorado’s attorney general recently identified spam and fraud calls as the number one source of consumer complaint in 2018.

Islands of success don’t all have palm trees

or some of us an island of success immediately conjures up the idea of living on a tropical paradise somewhere, removed from our worries and obligations, and living without WINNING debt or drama. We WORDS imagine ourselves on white sandy beaches, warm ocean breezes, enjoying island delicacies and sipping tropical drinks. And for others this dream has already beMichael Norton come a reality.

However, there is another island of success. It’s the island we can place ourselves on as we separate ourselves from the crowd and elevate ourselves from the pack.

In the pursuit of success, it is our ability to see life and opportunities differently and break away from the deafening noise that surrounds us each day. I have had the benefit of speaking with and learning from many wise and successful mentors. Some in my business life, some in my personal life, and some along my spiritual journey. And one common trait

among them was that they found time to step away from the crowd to focus on their work, their lives, their families, and their faith.

“The best thinking has been done in solitude” - Thomas Edison “Without solitude, no great work is possible” - Pablo Picasso And to underscore those two quotes, here is another saying that I had read recently, “A place of solitude is essential. Otherwise, one cannot think beyond the noise.” The noise is everywhere and sometimes the demands on our lives intense. To rise above the noise and the demands we must find time to be, to think, and to dream. In a world where stress and being stretched too thin drives us to work harder and not smarter, achievers have figured out that creating an island of success comes from their moments of peace and solitude.

So where can we find these islands of success? Some find it on walks along the beach, a hike in the mountains, in a cabin or retreat, or even stopping on a great tree run while skiing to take in a few moments of solitude surrounded by aspens, evergreens, and blankets of untracked snow.

For the record, the IRS: • Will not call you demanding immediate payment of taxes.

• Will not ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

• Will not threaten police arrest or lawsuits over the phone.

The IRS says if you suspect the call is a scam, hang up immediately without giving any information and call the IRS directly at 800-829-1040.

Here are some other tips that may help you avoid scams, according to authorities.

• Be alert to fraudsters. They often initiate contact, posing as part of a trusted organization. They often demand urgency and ask for money or personal information up front.

Studies show being outdoors reduces stress, depression and anxiety

fter graduating college, Travis Wild soon found that spending time in the mountains and on trails in Colorado gave him a place to reconnect with himself and restore his mind.

“For me, the outdoors are how everything is supposed to be without influence of problems,” Wild said, adding that nature has been the steady support in his life through rough times.

When he was diagnosed with testicular cancer almost five years ago, at age 26, Wild turned to nature to destress and cope with the difficult situation. The diagnosis came when he was changing jobs, changing relationships and mourning the loss of his grandmother.

“Outside was a place that I could go to step back and be in control a little more,” Wild said. “I got to feel normal again. Sometimes it was the only thing I had to look forward to.”

Now, Wild lives on the road, having turned his passion for outdoor space and adventure into a career as an

Wild is not alone when it comes to feeling improved mental health in the outdoors.

Proximity to green space has been associated with lower levels of stress and a reduction of symptoms for depression and anxiety, while interacting with nature can improve cognition for children with attention deficits and individuals

with depression.

“As a psychologist, when we’re trained we don’t talk about things like being outdoors as an intervention,” said Benjamin Miller, a psychologist on the board of Mental Health Colorado. “But when you think about the exposure to nature, there’s no surprise that it can decrease some symptoms of anxiety and depression.”

One study found that 30 minutes of nature exposure per week reduces depression by 7 percent and can reduce high blood pressure by 9 percent.

“One of the really interesting things this study shows is that nature contact during the workday leads to lower stress and higher job satisfaction,” Miller said.

In addition to being surrounded by nature, Miller said the practices that come with it help to improve mental health.

“We are we able to rest our minds and be present and focus on the moment,” Miller said.

In 2018, 55 percent of visitors to Jefferson County Open Space parks and trails said they saw the outdoor space as adding extreme benefit to their emotional wellbeing, ranking it fourth on a survey that measured the benefits of open space.

Last year, an estimated 7 million people visited the 56,000 acres of preserved land, 28 parks and 244 miles of trail in the Jeffco Open Space park system.

“We all knew it in our hearts, but to see it on paper was impactful,” said Mary Ann Bonnell, visitor services manager for Jeffco Open Space. “We now understand that people implicitly come to our parks for emotional wellbeing.”

This was the first time the survey, conducted last in 2011, measured this metric.

The next step, Bonnell said, is to protect visitor experience as best -as possible. That means preserving a quiet park and trail, so those who want to connect with nature can.

Jeffco Open Space has an amplified music regulation as well as a drone ban and leash law.

“I know these seem tangential, but it’s respecting the experience people are having outdoors,” Bonnell said.

Spring has sprung and new stage productions abound in the metro area.

• New this week: “The World Goes ‘Round” at Littleton’s Town Hall Arts Center is a revue of songs by American team John Kander and Fred Ebb, the duo that gave us “Cabaret” and “Chicago” and many other musicals.

Presented through April 28, the collection presents 34 songs by the team, presented by five finely tuned singers: Maggie Lamb, Traci Kern, Lynzee Newton-Jones, Matt LaFontaine and Jeremy Rill, accompanied by a swingin’ six-piece band.

Nick Sugar is director/choreographer and Donna Kolpan Debreceni is music director on keyboard. The live music adds a great deal to the performance as singers come and go in various combinations. Some solo numbers are included, but most

include several and choreography is smooth and simple. Songs such a “All That Jazz,” “Cabaret” and “Kiss of the Spider Woman” are familiar, but it’s fun to discover new numbers such as “Arthur in the Afternoon.”

The set is minimal and costumes are sparkly/shiny or simpler for the women. The keyboard, with director Debreceni, is at the bottom and other musicians are ranged up steps against the backdrop, several with more than one instrument. The sound is clear and fills the theatre.

The voices are fine and blend well, giving the audience a treat as they enjoy new material. Nick Sugar reproduced the original choreography

by Susan Stroman. The title song was written for Liza Minelli to sing in the film, “New York, New York.”

APRIL WATER MAIN FLUSHING PROGRAM The City of Englewood Utilities Department will conduct its annual fire hydrant flushing program starting April 22.

During this week, the water mains throughout the City will be flushed between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.

The Water Distribution crews will isolate sections of pipe by shutting off valves to connecting pipes, then opening fire hydrants to full volume to clean residue and sediment from the water mains. The resulting surge of water flushes mineral accumulations from the main.

This sediment may be forced into the connecting service lines.

Conservative ex-Hollywood parents Polly (Abby Apple Boes) and Lyman (Michael McNeill) are not happy to hear about the memoir and wonder if she can’t just wait until they are dead to publish … Her brother Trip, (Charles Lederer), is a calmer voice

that ties events together- and Polly’s fresh-from-rehab sister Silda rounds out this cast. Silda is played by Pam Clifton.

A strong play about a family that has all sorts of issues, it was a finalist for the Pulitzer and probably illustrates a writer trying to come to terms with his own difficult world, director Traister speculates in her notes.

“There is no love greater than family and hence no wounds that cut deeper …” she wrote. Probably the whole production will jell a bit further as these actors work together. At which point, it will be even more poignant to watch.

Crews will be unable to provide prior notification of the daily flushing schedules. Residents are advised to check their cold water on a daily basis during the week of April 22 to determine if their systems have been affected by the flushing.

Target is planning to invest about $150 million over two years to remodel a number of its stores in the Denver metro area, according to a news release.

In 2019, 10 stores will be remodeled, and a handful more will get upgrades in 2020, the release said.

The stores are part of Target’s broader investment to remodel more than 1,000 stores around the country by the end of 2020, the release said.

Renovations for each location will range in scope and be tailored to the needs of local guests, according to the news release. Shoppers can expect to see: • Upgraded merchandising displays and additional mannequins that showcase how different products work together.

ontinuing to serve as a leader in cardiac care in the Denver Metro Area, Swedish Medical Center is working to expand in 2019, investing in more technology, hiring additional cardiologists and sticking to its commitment to treat patients not just during a hospital visit, but long after they are discharged.

As more patients are diagnosed with heart and vascular problems each year, there is a growing need for services. In the United States, an estimated 15 million have heart disease, 78 million have high blood pressure and another 20 million have been diagnosed with diabetes.

AdDenise Mathias, Ad ministrative Director for Cardiac Services at Swedish Medical Center, said being diagnosed with a heart or vascular program can be worrisome, and finding high-quality care where treatment is all-inclusive can be stressful.

“At Swedish, we offer a full spectrum of cardiac care with quality and compassion” Mathias said. “We are looking to continually expand and improve what we offer cardiac patients from the emergency heart attack patient to a complex heart surgery, we believe in caring from our patients from beginning to end.”

Mathias said Swedish is taking cardiac care to the next level, with services expanding and growing in the following areas: • More experts: With a focus on treating patients in a timely manner, the cardiology and vascular team has added eight new doctors and five advanced practice providers. Mathias said the focus remains on collaboration, giving patients individual, tailored treatment plans.

• Electrophysiology: Electrophysiologists (EP) help diagnose and treat conditions involving the heart’s electrical activity. These include arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats) such as atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia and atrial flutter. Swedish currently provides a wide range of minimallyinvasive EP treatments including: • Cardiac ablation, which reduces or

eliminates arrhythmias and restores regular rhythm • Implantable pacemakers or cardioverter defibrillators • Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) – PVD can impact a patient’s quality of life, causing the arteries and blood vessels outside the heart to become blocked or narrow. Those suffering from PVD often complain of extreme pain in the legs and arms. At Swedish, PVD experts use traditional and minimally-invasive surgeries to correct the problem.

• Robotics: As advances in technology continues, Swedish Medical Center has made it a priority to find options for patients that are less invasive. Swedish Medical Center is currently the only

cardiothoracic robotic-assisted surgical program in Colorado. “We want patients home and healing as soon as possible,” Mathias said. “If we can do that with cutting-edge technology, we are excited to do so.”

Mathias said using robotics equipment, it allows Swedish to conduct robotic-assisted procedures in the following areas: Mitral Valve Repair Tricuspid Valve Repair Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation Intracardiac Tumors Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Cardiology intervention for oncology patients: Mathias said this is an area Swedish Medical Center is continually expanding to help all patients who are currently being treated for cancer.

“In general, oncology patients are receiving medications and treatment that over time can damage their heart,” Mathias

said. “Swedish cardiologists are working with oncology doctors to assess and treat patients early. Collaborating for early intervention means catching the issues before the damage is done.”

More surgical suites: With the expectation of offering cardiac care to more patients, Mathias said Swedish is adding more space, including more clinic space, and additional heart-surgery operating space with advanced imaging technology that is used to guide complex surgeries, such as those performed in the heart and legs.

“We are looking at all areas in cardiac care and working to grow our services,” Mathias said. “Our continued goal is to expand our role as a regional cardiac referral center. We believe in quick access to high-quality care. We want to ensure we are providing that for all of our patients.”

Fast learner fastens on fastball Conner Cummiskey makes move into pitching role

onner Cummiskey made his debut as a varsity pitcher early this season and looked impressive in allowing only one hit in four innings.

The junior is the Heritage third baseman, plus he is filling in on the mound and was a standout in his initial career start against rival Arapahoe on March 23.

“I’m a football and baseball player but I like baseball better,” said Cummiskey, who was the Eagles’ starting quarterback on the football team last fall. “I just feel like I have a better future in baseball and I just like the game better the way it is played.”

His first varsity mound appearance should provide his with some confidence.

“I enjoy playing third every day but I feel like I am a better pitcher for college,” he said. “I am probably going to college to be a pitcher. In any situation where it is on the line, I’m going fastball. That’s the pitch I always rely on.

I work on my off speed a lot and I just picked up a new pitch, a knuckle curve ball. I’m working on that and trying to get better with that. “

Q&A with Cummiskey Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Baker Mayfield. I love the way he plays and his competitive mindset. He just goes out and competes every day.

What or who motivates you most to excel in sports?

Probably my dad (Tom), he just pushes me every day to be the best that I can be.

What would be a perfect performance in your sport?

Depending on how many at bats I get, let’s say 3-for-3 and a home run hopefully. And just making every play. If I’m on the mound, just filling up and throwing strikes and hopefully my defense can back me up

What is your favorite class in school and why?

I’ve always liked math What do you like to do away from sports and school?

I like to ski. I skied a lot this winter because I don’t play a winter sport. I usually stop about a month before the season starts so I don’t get hurt.

What are your plans after high school?

I want to play college baseball Is it easier to throw a 10-yard down-and-out pass or a strike in baseball?

Probably it is easier to throw a strike.

A Denver Challenge Coin is the equivalent of the key to the city.

Only 30 people OVERTIME have received a Challenge Coin from Hancock and some of those people include Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter. Others who have been Jim Benton honored include John Elway, former Olympian Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Chauncey Billups, Stevie Wonder and local military servicemen and women and firefighters.

Pugh, the 20-year-old who played with Real Colorado and for three seasons at Mountain Vista High School, is the youngest American to play and score as an 18-year-old in the Olympic Games. She plays for the Washington Spirit of the National Women’s Soccer League.

Horan, 24, played club soccer for the Colorado Rush and graduated from Golden High school, but did not play soccer for the school. She was the first American female soccer player to sign a professional contract directly out of high school with Paris Saint-Germain.

She has played pro soccer since 2012 and is currently on the Portland Thorns’ roster.

Pugh and Horan were in town with the national team for a friendly match on April 4 against Australia at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The game was one of the countdown matches for the FIFA Women’s World Cup this summer.

The Americans rallied to notch a 5-3 victory and Pugh came in as a sub and scored twice to spark the USA win.
