Digging into gardening Seniors gather for beginners tips at local garden center

n what felt like one of the first official days of spring, a few dozen gathered at Tagawa Gardens to take down some tips on raising plants effectively.

The audience on March 28 asked questions and followed along, including during a “pest or friend?” activity, in which Linda Larsen, a garden adviser at Tagawa, showed images of different insects to talk about whether they pose a threat.

Asked afterward what her favorite part of teaching is, Larsen said: “Causing success — hopefully,” with a smile.

Larsen lives in the Parker area, grew up in a gardening family and has been gardening “forever,” she said. She offered more advice for beginners.

“Contact those who know — attend

classes, go where there’s experience,” Larsen said. “Stay local because we can’t do the things other (regions) can do” with gardening.”

Charlotte and Terry Quarton, 71 and 73, were among the crowd.

“We had a lot of great knowledge,” Charlotte Quarton said.

The married pair live in Centennial and have a garden in their back yard.

“We’ve had rabbits and Japanese beetles this year,” she said, referencing a topic Larsen covered. “We just wanted a refresher course.”

The event was put on as part of the Centennial Active Seniors events program by the Centennial Senior Commission, which advises the Centennial City Council on matters affecting seniors. Jones District aims for ‘urban open spaces’ 42-acre mixed-use vision differs from surrounding office parks

Imagine if the sprawling sea of office parks on the west side of Interstate 25 was a destination and not just a collection of nondescript buildings and parking lots.

That’s the vision for The Jones District, a 42-acre — mostly vacant — swath of land on East Mineral Avenue in Centennial just north of IKEA. Office users want “an active, vibrant community around their office,” said Chad Brue, a developer with the project, which sits in a dense business corridor between South Yosemite Street and the highway.

It started as Centennial’s first transit-oriented development — designed with proximity to transit and walkability in mind — and it aims to break the mold of the surrounding properties with what developers call a “network of urban open spaces,” according to an open-house presentation March 28 by the developers and

5 things to know: New South Suburban rec center District expects three sheets of ice at recreation, admin facility combo

A chunk of land along East County Line Road near the north end of Highlands Ranch will soon see a nearly 200,000-square-foot building erected on it.

South Suburban Parks and Recreation District is moving forward with its plans for a new recreation complex that will also double as an administration office for the district. It will replace the 50-year-old South Suburban Ice Arena in Centennial near East Arapahoe Road, along with the current administration office just a short walk away from that arena.

The $50 million project will be built on what’s now the David A. Lorenz Regional Park Disc Golf Course, land that the district already owns, along the south Centennial border.

Here are a few things to know about the facility, which is expected to open in December 2020 at the southwest corner of County Line Road and South Holly Street.

1Three ice sheets?

The new center — which does not

yet have a name — would feature a fieldhouse, gymnasiums, offices, and food and drink, but some residents have expressed worry that the plans don’t increase capacity for ice hockey and figure skating.

Hockey has grown in popularity in the district, Dirk Doty, with the district’s hockey programs, has said, and the district’s leagues were nearly at capacity recently. With school districts moving students to later start times and letting them out later, scheduling skating classes is getting more difficult, Gerry Lane, with the district’s figure skating program, has said.

Local residents have expressed concern that the new center wouldn’t increase the district’s number of ice sheets — currently, the ice arena has two.

South Suburban previously reached out to the Highlands Ranch Metro District for a partnership, requesting $10 million to pay for an additional sheet of ice. The metro district rejected the proposal last summer, with board members saying they didn’t see the benefit to the community.

After some uncertainty, South Suburban “is planning on three sheets of ice,” said Becky Grubb, who spoke for South Suburban. “We will know more as cost estimates and bids are received.”

Old-school pools to be demolished, replaced Holly, Franklin, Harlow facilities have one more summer before modernization

After this summer, it will be time to say so long to South Suburban’s oldschool pools.

Holly, Franklin and Harlow pools — three of the four outdoor pools in South Suburban Parks and Recreation District’s roster — are slated to be rebuilt with modern versions this fall, and district officials say it’s about time.

“They’ve done a good job, but they’ve run their course,” said Eileen Matheson, South Suburban’s director of recreation.

An audit of the district’s aquatic facilities found that the three pools, all built in the 1960s, don’t meet the expectations of modern swimmers and are suffering from outdated equipment and backlogged maintenance, Matheson said.

The old pools were primarily designed for lap swimming and swim team events, according to an “Aquatics Master Plan” prepared for South Suburban by the Counsilman-Hunsaker consulting firm and ratified by the

“Older pools are no longer bringing in the swimmers,” according to the master plan. “They often sit empty while families drive an hour or more to the regional new water park to find recreation value; and they don’t mind paying for it when they find it.”

Meanwhile, the report says, the three pools bear the signs of facilities at the end of their lifecycles: “leaking pool shells, inadequate filtration, current swimming pool code violations and outdated features.”

“We have issues every year,” Matheson said. “We can’t do Band-Aids anymore. We found it would be cheaper to demolish them and start over. It would

cost millions just to get to the pipes beneath the pools.”

The replacement pools will incorporate features geared toward the desires of a wide range of users, the report says.

Harlow Pool, at Lowell Boulevard and Belleview Avenue, will get a “sprayground” featuring bubblers, water cannons and geysers. It will also get a new water slide, but will keep three traditional lap lanes.

Franklin Pool, at Franklin Street and Panama Drive, will get a “tot pool” with a ramped entry and spray features, and the main pool will feature a rope swing, diving board and water slide. The pool will retain six lap lanes.

hoe Road, will get a small “leisure pool” with a zero-depth entry, a “lazy river,” and a six-lane lap pool with a rope swing, diving board and water slide.

All told, the three projects are expected to cost about $10.5 million, according to the master plan.

The pools will remain open through the summer of 2019, Matheson said, with the new pools expected to open in time for Memorial Day 2020.

South Suburban board member Susan Pye called the project a good idea.

“I absolutely think it’s necessary,” Pye said. “These pools are in really bad condition, and we did a lot of community outreach. I feel confident we captured what people wanted, and can achieve that in a fiscally responsible way.”

The board plans to finalize the plans in May, Pye said.

Pye said swimmers have more options now than they did in the 1960s, including apartment complex pools, HOA-provided facilities, and regional draws like Englewood’s Pirate’s Cove water park, but said the old neighborhood pools still mean a lot to a community.

“Kids learn to swim, families get to go on outings and spend time outdoors, and young people can compete on swim teams,” Pye said. “There’s nothing that’s not good about these places. We just need to keep them up to date and in good order.”

There are countless other concerns associated with not having a plan in place. Even the most tight knit families fall apart in times of death or disability.

Disagreements about care or end of life decisions— or about deciding or interpreting what your wishes really were— can become all out wars.

Then there is the issue of nursing home costs, which can decimate an entire life’s savings.

People try to avoid this by putting property in their adult children’s names. But what if that son or daughter was in a car accident and sued? All that property you ‘safely’ secured in their names is now subject to satisfying a judgment.

Plans for disc golf course advance Site would be in open space behind metro district administration building

The Highlands Ranch Metro District, in partnership with South Suburban Parks and Recreation, is considering a disc golf course in the open space behind its administrative office, south of Plaza Drive and west of South Broadway. The proposed 60-acre course, dubbed the West Fork Disc Golf Course, would have 18 holes.

At a March 26 metro district board meeting, directors approved a conceptual design study for the course’s parking lot and pedestrian crossing

— the bulk of the project’s $335,000 cost. Pending approval from South Surburban’s board of directors, it would cover $100,000.

The parking lot would be located off South Broadway, just north of a business park with Walgreens and Tokyo Joe’s.

“It’s purely conceptual design at this point to see if it will even work,” said Nick Adamson, the metro district’s natural resource manager.

South Suburban is closing its existing disc golf course east of David A. Lorenz Regional Park, 8422 S Colorado Blvd., on April 14 as it begins construction on a new facility. That has some players of the sport worried about their options in the south metro Denver area.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards accepting applications Four sessions of week-long, expense-paid conference in July

The program is said to produce leaders, challenge grit and change perspective. The simplicity of the outdoors, combined with the complexity of hundreds of young people from a four-state region, is life changing, organizers say.

It’s the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards — a five-day, expense-paid conference held in July at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park. Rotarians from districts 5440 and 5450, covering parts of Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming and Idaho, select the young men and women to attend.

The week features a mix of activi-

ties, speakers, small group discussions and large group presentations. In one activity, for example, participants will find a solution to an issue facing their schools, such as substance use or the pressure of social media.

What makes the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) stand out from other leadership camps is the concept, Denver-area Rotarians say.

“RYLA is not a bunch of old guys standing up preaching to young people how to be a leader,” said Bill manning, of Evergreen, who has been involved with RYLA for 16 years. “What it is, is youth leading youth, peer to peer.”

The conference draws a diverse group of young people, from rural towns in Nebraska and Wyoming to inner-city communities and suburbs of Denver. Head counselors and junior counselors — who have recently gone through the conference as campers — lead with the help of a Rotarian.

Until May 1, students from across the Denver metro area are encouraged to apply online at www.rmryla.org.

Any high school sophomore or junior may apply to one of two sessions, July 14-19 or July 21-26. Middle school seventh-graders may apply to one of two sessions of the Young Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, held July 21-26 and July 28-Aug. 2.

Rotary International, the sponsor of the conference, covers the fee of $450 per person.

Local Rotarians, who interview applicants, typically look for students with leadership experience who have excelled in one or more areas of school.

Emily Ostdiek, a head counselor who attended the conference two years ago, participated in student government, her school’s newspaper, DECA and National Honor Society.

In the competitive game of disc golf, players throw plastic discs at elevated, stationary metal baskets placed throughout natural terrain.

The concept is similar to traditional golf — you want to hit a target in the least number of throws.

“It’s really just hiking and throwing,” Chris Reed, an avid disc golfer from Highland Ranch, said.

Highlands Ranch has an existing nine-hole course, Martin Walworth Disc Golf at Grace Presbyterian Church, off Sante Fe Drive, between Town Center and Highlands Ranch Parkway. Some high schools in the

area also utilize courses, which have limited hours for the public.

In its 2016 capital improvement planning process, the metro district added a disc golf course to its threeyear project forecast, with proposed implementation occurring in 2019.

Such a course would enhance recreational opportunities in the community, according to metro district staff.

At the March 26 meeting, Reed and several other disc golfers — from Highlands Ranch and surrounding communities — voiced their support for the proposed Highlands Ranch course. The sport, which they describe as competitive, convenient and family-oriented, has a strong following in the metro Denver area, they said.

lands Ranch and what a great community it is, that there is not a good disc golf course,” resident Janell Smith said. “It’s a great sport at the activity level, it’s inexpensive for people.”

Aside from the occasional mowing, maintenance of the type of course is relatively low, according to Adamson.

In the next month, Adamson and his staff will bring before the board a conceptual design for the parking lot, as well as feedback from adjacent businesses and neighbors. Metro district staff will mail postcards to property owners and go door-to-door, according to Adamson.

As for a timeline on the disc golf course, Adamson said: “We don’t have a determined date at this time.

We want to first make sure that we’ve heard from the community.”

But, she said, the people who go to RYLA don’t fit a mold.

“They are going to pick a bunch of different people for a bunch of different reasons,” Ostdiek, from Nebraska, said.

RYLA bettered Ostdiek by increasing her compassion for others and teaching her to listen more, she said. She looks forward to having a similar impact on this year’s campers.

“In that environment, you’re with people that want you to be your best you,” Ostdiek said. “In that space, you have room to explore and fail, knowing that everyone is going to be lifting you up.”

4Serving many needs The new facility aims to address many community needs and interests, Grubb said.

South Suburban’s master plan identified a need for more indoor recreation opportunities and replacing aging facilities, Grubb said.

“The new facility will also provide a variety of options,” Grubb added. “It will include a fieldhouse with two synthetic turf fields for sports like lacrosse and soccer, and two gymnasiums for pickleball, basketball, volleyball and more.”

The center will also offer “an abundance” of locker rooms and spectator seating, a restaurant and bar, a board room, and rental space for parties and meetings — along with South Suburban’s administrative offices.

5Fitting into network The facility will not be a traditional recreation center, Grubb said. South Suburban owns and operates four “fullservice” recreation centers, and two are within a five-mile radius of the new complex’s site, Grubb added.

South Suburban Ice Arena will close when the new complex opens and will be repurposed for use by the district at a future date, Grubb said.

‘If it’s predictable, it’s preventable’ South Metro, Lone Tree Police, RTD practice emergency response on new light rail track

In the event of an emergency situation, communication and experience is invaluable, South Metro Fire Rescue Training Capt. Chris Wells said. So, they practice it.

The Regional Transportation District, South Metro Fire Rescue and Lone Tree Police Department drilled an emergency scenario on the newly built light rail track, part of the Southeast Rail Extension project, March 23. The three agencies practiced responding to an emergency on the bridge between the new Sky Ridge and RidgeGate stations.

“What’s important is, and what adds another level of difficulty, is this is taking place on a bridge,” said RTD spokeswoman Lisa Trujillo. “What it does is it helps everyone test their communication and response efforts just in case this happens in real life, and this is a safe, closed environment to do so.”

The first responders were not given the scenario beforehand to simulate a live emergency situation. RTD facilitated the drill.

Rescue workers drilled treating and moving passengers who sustained injuries. The drill lasted about two hours.

In the drill, after the passengers were evacuated, the firefighters jacked up one side of the train to access underneath and used a service crane to provide equipment.

“Whenever we do preparedness drills like this, it’s important to remember the train is live with electricity, so before any responders can approach the train, RTD has to turn the power off in order

to make it safe for the first responders to tend to the passengers,” Trujillo said.

RTD completes emergency drilling scenarios with each newly constructed project. The drills are meant to help familiarize the first responders with the new track and some of the unique aspects of the area, like the bridge that crosses over I-25 to East RidgeGate.

“We don’t even have maps here because it hasn’t been fully constructed yet. It added to that dimension of the unknown,” Wells said. “What we found is if it’s predicable, it’s preventable…

The Southeast Rail Extension will officially open for public use May 19, with a grand opening scheduled two days before that. The project includes 2.3 miles of new track laid south from the Lincoln Station and three new stations.

“Communications between the three agencies is always challenging, so to make sure we understand if we wait 20 to 30 minutes into the scene before we unify our command, it really is chaotic,” Wells said. “This really proved how important it is to unify our command early on.”

Internet shows that you can’t spell ‘antisocial’ without ‘social’ QUIET DESPERATION

E

very day, every single day, maybe on the hour, someone is shamed, chided, ridiculed, put down and disrespected because of an image of them or a comment they made that was posted on social Craig Marshall media.

And then the bad Smith blood begins.

There’s a very old joke about the man who goes to his doctor and says, “Doc, every time I hit my hand with a hammer, well, it hurts.”

Doctor says, “Want my advice? Stop hitting your hand with a hammer.”

I know this is too simple and simplistic for people who are smitten and taken and enamored with social media, but all anyone has to do, to avoid being shamed, chided, and ridiculed, is to quit social media.

Otherwise, your complaints fall on (my) deaf ears.

For many, such as we have become, being on social media is a requisite.

It’s not even a choice.

Not being on social media is about as uncool as it gets.

And we all want to be cool, with it, and awesome, don’t we?

I promise you: Someone will breastfeed in public tomorrow, and post an

image of it, and then be slammed from here to Dairyland.

(We) can’t seem to resist sharing our special moments with the world, but try, try, try.

I know I am an exception. Not on social media, and don’t have a cellphone.

No selfies here. Don’t know what Instagram is or why anyone needs it or wants it. As previously commented: I have no truck with influencers.

Doesn’t anyone think for themselves anymore, and keep to themselves anymore?

Every day, there is an article about the most useless family in America: what they wore an hour ago, who is cheating on them, and how terrific they looked in thongs at the hardware store.

I wish they would go away. But I know someone would take their places. (We) feast on garbage; i.e., personality doings.

But here’s the deal, even if we are blessed enough to work for an outstanding boss or company who sets good goals and objectives, communicates expectations and results consistently, and we are happily employed and engaged in what we do, if we do not challenge ourselves to think bigger and set our own productivity goals higher than what the company sets for us, it means we have still just attached our sail to their boat.

Whatever it is we choose to do in this world, we should be the one who sets our own course and we are the ones who should hold ourselves accountable to the results we want to deliver. And we should never do this just for the company or someone else, but we need to do this because it gives us freedom and empowerment as we attach our own sail to our own boat.

Wander + Ivy turns customers into casual sommeliers

That follows a week of activities beginning on Palm Sunday, aiming to prepare people to reflect on the biblical story of Easter, said the Rev. Brian Winter of Christ’s Episcopal Church.

onvenience is king in today’s consumer market. Entertainment, food and clothing have all seen significant convenience advancements in recent years and now, thanks to Highlands resident Dana Spaulding, wine might be next in line.

With the October launch of her company, Wander + Ivy, Spaulding aims COMING make it easier for ATTRACTIONS to wine drinkers to have a glass without the guilt that comes from not finishing the bottle.

“I was getting frustrated because I would want a nice glass of wine with dinner, but I was certain to waste Clarke Reader it because I’d only want one glass,” Spaulding explained.

“My husband, Gus, asked me if I was going to waste another bottle of wine and that started me thinking about alternatives.”

Spaulding started exploring the single serve options in the market but couldn’t find something she really enjoyed. She wanted a more premium package and product for the casual drinker and so Wander + Ivy, which offers four wines — rosé, sauvignon blanc, pinot noir and a red blend — in 6.3-ounce wine bottles was born.

The October launch was the result of more than a year of research and preparation, which included getting her sommelier certification, branding groundwork and finding vineyards that can offer organic products.

“I was looking for natural and organic ingredients in my wine, and I couldn’t find that in most single-serve options,” Spaulding explained. “I found it really interesting to explore what the organic ingredient movement means for wine. The same reasons people eat organically, they should also drink.”

In the handful of months since she launched Wander + Ivy, Spaulding has already found a home for her wines in about 60 liquor stores in the state, including Littleton, Denver and Wheat Ridge. Her dedication to the local community extends to the company’s standing as an One Percent For the Planet member. This means Wander + Ivy donates 1 percent of gross profits to Colorado charities.

here’s a common theme on listings for Easter egg hunts in the Denver Metro area.

Don’t be late. The events begin precisely on time — and they’re over in a flash.

Cynthia Bauman knows exactly why. When the Golden Kiwanis Club holds its annual Easter egg hunt at Parfet Park, it’s a sight to behold, she said. Volunteers disperse roughly 6,000 colored eggs “scattered like gum drops all over the park.” They divide kids into three age groups, and at 10 a.m. sharp, volunteers ring the bell.

Then chaos, albeit adorable chaos, unfolds.

“At 10:03 it’s over. The eggs are like vacuumed off the lawn. It’s amazing,” Bauman said.

Painting ‘from the inside out’ Local artist finds inspiration after serious head injury

James Holmes admits he never used to be able to “connect” with abstract art.

The 56-year-old Parker man said he never appreciated the art form. Abstract concepts, to him, a 17-year board member of the Denver Art Museum, never existed in his mind.

Holmes is the CEO and executive director of the Cherokee Ranch and Castle Foundation in Sedalia and has a passion for riding horses. Standing in the Deep Space Lounge in downtown Parker March 19, Holmes said he never would have guessed he would be here, talking about how he became an abstract artist and about his pieces hanging on the wall for his first art show.

“I could never really think abstractly before,” Holmes said. “It wasn’t the way I was wired.”

In February 2018, Holmes broke his neck after being bucked from a horse on a day trip to Cherry Creek State Park. He also sustained a closed head injury, when a blow to the head causes the brain to knock against the skull.

He received emergency surgery and doctors warned him he could become paralyzed or die from the procedure.

Holmes came out of the procedure with little pain and few complications.

But his neck was stiff, his head felt fuzzy and he couldn’t ride horses for most of the following spring and summer.

Holmes’ wife, Wendy, said that was the beginning of him discovering his new passion.

“He’s always been a very active person and, at times, in high-risk sports,” said Wendy Holmes, who works as the director of communications and public affairs for Douglas County. “For him to be in a position where he could not be with his horses, could not be active for so long — I told him that I thought it might be good for him if he couldn’t ride his horses, maybe he should paint them.”

‘Miracle of the accident’ Patients who sustain closed head injuries often experience some kind of personality change, according to the Mayo Clinic. Most eventually revert back to their old selves, while others don’t ever quite come back.

Holmes said since his injury some of his personality has changed. He can’t improvise on guitar like he used to. His brain felt “foggy” during much of his recovery and does, on occasion, still today.

And, somehow, he found a talent for abstract painting.

As a child, he enjoyed drawing and painting certain objects, but hadn’t created much art since then. After the accident, he found peace in creating abstract art, where shape and form are simplified.

“All of this stuff is a miracle of the accident,” Holmes said. “Hopefully, the gateway is open and now I’m feeding it enough to where it will become part of my normal `artistic diet.’ ” SEE ARTIST, P17

In most of his paintings, Holmes finds people. They don’t usually appear to him at first. The figures only appear hours later, when Holmes “meets the painting in the morning.”

In one painting he sees a woman’s face. Another shows an angel almost hidden, surrounded by blue and white paint. It’s unintentional, Holmes said.

Holmes has found his subconscious come to life through his work.

“Something occurred after his accident where it was like a muse came to visit him,” said Stephanie Hill Newton, a friend and fellow artist. “When a muse comes to see us, we have a choice to grab on and follow that muse where it wants to take us, or choose to let it pass us by. He chose to grab his muse and hasn’t let that muse go.”

A change of pace Almost every piece hanging in the Deep Space Lounge marks a point in Holmes’ newfound appreciation of life. He takes things more slowly. He tries to live in the moment.

Karla Raines has been Holmes’ friend since 2002. She began painting in 2012 and said Holmes’ work as an artist has been nearly the opposite of who he has been his entire life — a man interested in fast-paced, highenergy action.

“James’ work has a serenity to it, and there’s almost an additional, emotional, visual component to it that is a direct connection to who he is spiritually and how he’s connected to his emotions,” Raines said. “I think what I’ve seen with James is immense continuity in terms of character of the person and his deep passion for the things that capture him.”

A couple nights per week, Holmes returns to his basement art studio, turns on some Pearl Jam or Jack White, and paints. He starts with a base of white paint, then begins to integrate different colors — orange, blue and yellow show up frequently in his work. He doesn’t spend much time

thinking about the piece, and doesn’t look at the piece too closely until the next morning, when he begins to see the figures in his art and the emotion the piece evokes.

“What I say to people is `I paint from the inside out,’ “ Holmes said.

‘A lesson in all of it’ An optimist at heart and a devout believer in God, Holmes took up painting as a hobby. He developed a love for his pieces, and began to share his work on Facebook. Friends would comment on what they saw and how each painting made them feel, and Holmes began to see it, too.

Holmes’ work will be on display at the Deep Space Lounge until April 27. He’s already had people interested in buying his pieces, and he provides smaller ones for $25 as souvenirs.

Most of Holmes’ head fogginess has faded, he said. His ability to play guitar has slowly come back to him, but his art remains one of his greatest new passions.

“When I had this accident, part of my being able to accept the harsh moments about the prospects of the surgery, what it might look like… part of my ability to process that was my faith,” Holmes said. “I knew that there’s a purpose for my life. I believe everything that happens to me is for learning. There’s a lesson in all of it, and my belief in God allowed me to accept it.”

Car factory at heart of stage production Skeleton Crew’ is strong show from Curious Theatre

The setting is the break room at a Detroit auto plant, with a high window that looks out onto the assembly line, a cavernous space beyond. There is a block of small personal lockers, a strip with sink, refrigerator, coffee maker … We don’t get the associated factory noise, but a series of animated films streamed across that window somehow imply it, in a clever set detail for Dominique Morriseau’s “Skeleton Crew” at Curious Theatre through April 13.

It is part of a three-play series: “The Detroit Project,” which gave us “Detroit 67” last season. Curious’ director donnie l. betts, a longtime part of Denver’s theater community, said it tells “of those with less opportunity to prosper.” Characters, especially Faye (strong actress Perri Gaffney), who is approaching a 30-year anniversary, seem locked into a particular culture of auto workers and have difficulty seeing beyond the world shown.

Thursday, Friday, Saturday; 2 p.m. Sunday through April 13. parents’ way … The management figure is foreman Reggie (Cajardo Lindsey, a familiar local face) and younger cast members/workers Shanita (Kristina Fountaine) and Quinn Marchman (Dex), who is saving money to buy his own garage — although his ability to run a business might be questioned, with his hot-tempered responses.

The younger characters show a different attitude toward authority and how the world seems to work, but are also feeling off-center with the rumor that the plant’s about to close. One feels tension in the air, swirling the smoke from Kaye’s cigarettes. Kaye is supposedly the union rep. but feels helpless against the system. “Working in this industry is what I do.” Reggie’s mama was her friend, so there’s almost a family connection. But she has another issue.

Conversations continue through several days in that break room. Stories surface that the plant was robbed last night. Bits of 1960s music tie scenes together and are especially effective,

We care about these characters and when Faye says “I make my moves day to day,” this person who runs on a schedule of deadlines and thoughts about what’s happening next week, cringes and wants to offer help as well — as Reggie does! Faye had thought of making it to 30 years, retiring and then heading to Miami … With the

threat of a pink slip any day, she’s up a creek. “My mama loved you. She’d slap me good if I didn’t help you …”

Reggie says.

Faye asks: “Let me stay one more night. I need to figure it out on my own.” He answers: “I’ll stay here with you …”

We’d recommend this strong production to our readers.

‘Tangible Terrain’ has unusual touch Show features work of four artists during theater run

Four area artists will exhibit works in a variety of mediums during the theater run of “The World Goes Round” at Littleton’s Town Hall Arts Center. They are Stephanie O’Malley, photography; Herb Dreo, wood carving; Vanessa Martin, botanical drawing; and Andi Burum, a special collage technique. Their “Tangible Terrain” exhibit runs through April 28 and is open weekdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and during productions.

Exhibits are intended to have some relationship to the production that’s running onstage upstairs, which is fun to contemplate. In this case, title, materials and subjects would seem to connect, be it a carved wooden owl, a poppy photo or …

flowers. Vibrant colors and intricate detail are hallmarks of my work.”

O’Malley is also director of education at Center for the Arts in Evergreen.

• Andi Burnum writes: “You can regularly find me hunched over my desk, tweezers in hand, obsessively searching through magazines for the perfect color. My art is created by tearing magazines (mostly National Geographic) and gluing them together to form pictures that from a distance, appear to be oil paintings.” She has been refining her technique for 18 years and says her subject matter includes “soulful dogs and cows.” She has a herd of red Angus she likes to hang out with and lives in Evergreen with husband, dogs and cats … She

also does dog portrait commissions and mosaic art.

• Herb Dreo is a wood carver who inherited his tools and talent from his father, a master carver from Austria — and additional carving tools from his father-in-law. He says his hobbies are outdoor-oriented: skiing, biking, and being in the mountains. Drawing lessons helped him become a better carver. He also enjoys turning bowls and other objects on his lathe. His work is in three Colorado galleries.

• Vanessa Martin lives in Aurora — on Colorado’s plains, where flora grow that inspire her. She trained as a botanical illustrator at Denver Botanic Gardens and fuses art and science within that tradition. She works

Tailoring your resume to fit your sector Don’t stray from the job description: While it’s important to get the personal summary right, provide experience, education and knowledge - it’s still important to align the resume to the job description.

Whether it’s someone skimming or computer software – you want the keywords of your resume, cover letter and personal summary to align with those specified in the job description.

Depending on the industry in which you are aiming to get hired, your resume could be the key to your success. Whether it be a position in the public sector, a technology job or in education – your resume is going to be key to getting your foot in the door.

Government Work There are perks to getting a job in the public sector. A lot of it centers on benefits, security and good hours. But, you have to get the job first. Even if you have all the experience for the job, applying for a public-sector job is completely different than applying with a private company.

When applying for a public position, it’s important to remember that keywords matter less, given a robot isn’t going to be reading it. In fact, your resume should be as humanized as possible given it will be read by actual people, even a group on a hiring committee from multiple departments.

Some tips to remember in applying for a public job include: Keep it traditional: Stick to the look in resume and cover letter that stays professional and doesn’t get too fancy. Use conservative font to

outline your experience, education and achievements.

Follow the steps: Procedures have to be followed in public-sector positions. Deviating from steps outlines in the job description and post could mean you missing the finalist list of candidates for interviews.

Be specific and thorough: While traditionally its been said to keep your resume short and to only one page. However, for a public position, it’s important to provide details.

Share as much pertinent information as possible to state your case for the position.

Be personable: As stated above, there is not a robot or quick resume skimmer that decides the best possible candidates to interview. Instead, it is a real person who understands what it takes to work a government job where you likely will deal with the public. They are looking for a true person and not just keywords.

Use clear and concise statements.

Technology Jobs Unlike a government job, unless you are applying for a job in the public sector, getting a tech job requires clear, concise information on your experience, certifications and education.

Personal summary: The first step in creating a resume for a tech job is to knock the personal summary out of the park. With the right wording, expressions and information the personal summary can get you a step forward with the application. However, worded incorrectly, especially when it’s a tech department sifting through the material, you may lose consideration before they even start skimming further down the page.

In a summary paragraph, including the title of the job for which you are seeking, experience and a quick rundown of qualifications.

Skill set: It’s important to really list and be thorough in supplying your qualifications that proves you meet the skill set required for the job in which you are applying. While some outside the tech industry may think they are reading a foreign language, tech industry professionals understand and want to know.

Explain areas in which you are an expert, explain areas you are knowledgable and clearly list areas in which you have experience.

What to leave in, what to leave out: Remember to include the parts of your work history that are relevant to the position. Leave out the rest.

Also, include personal details fitting to the position. Include all information regarding your achievements in the field.

A position in Education Education is one of those fields where you can be hired in either the public or private sector. It’s an area where you have stability in hours worked, and it is also increasingly demanding as much as positions in the education field are in demand.

Getting a job in education requires specific skills as much as it requires experiences and credentials. Some of those skills include adaptability, dedication, creativity and the ability to be an effective communicator.

In creating a good resume and building a career in education, some tips to keep in mind include: Gaining experience: The more experience you have, the more willing institutions are to hire you.

Degrees and certifications: Any time you are teaching, or participating in educating any age group, it’s important to have the degrees required by the schools and institutions. However, it’s just as important to show in a resume that you’ve kept up and evolved. Times change, which requires more certifications, updated practices and proof that you stay with the times.

Appearance matters: We aren’t talking about the clothing you choose or how you sit and carry yourself during an interview – we are talking about the resume. Your resume must have a professional look, be well organized. Remember, even in education, a resume may only be skimmed for up to 30 seconds.

It’s time for teens to start applying for summer jobs It’s the time of year where the school year is wrapping up and teenagers may start thinking about what to do this summer. Instead of just sitting at home and scrolling the iPhone screen, one option is to take advantage of the many job opportunities available today.

This is the time of year where many public and private entities are looking for summer help to provide entertainment and programs to youth and families.

Take Pirates Cove for instance. The Englewood water park is currently seeking lifeguards for the summer with plans to open on May 25. Area teenagers have an opportunity to gain valuable experience, and make up to $12.30 an hour.

Brad Anderson, senior facilities supervisor of aquatics for the Town of Englewood, said getting a summer job as a life guard or with their summer services gives teenagers a great sense of team work.

“The team environment is probably the most important thing,” he said.

“Then, you get to make a difference

in people’s lives. As a lifeguard you save lives, you mentor and you gain a true sense of belonging.”

Anderson said the starting age for hiring lifeguards is 15 as long as they can pass certification requirements.

“We will hire you at any age as long as you come with a willingness to work,” Anderson added.

Other summer programs are also in search of summer help, it just takes some searching on metro government websites in communities such as Castle Rock, Parker,

Lakewood, Golden and others.

Besides something to do over the summer, getting and keeping a summer job has the following benefits for teens: Responsibility Success in the adult world is contingent on what teens learn as kids. A summer job helps them budget their time, understand expectations and thinking about future growth and success.

Financial education A growing number of young people are graduating high school and entering college without any financial knowledge, meaning they can’t manage a budget, fill out financial paperwork or plan ahead. Having a job and managing money over the summer can help educate for the future.

Self-growth Success in a summer job not only earns valuable connections, but also gives local teens the opportunity for self-growth in gain self-esteem in a job well done.

Denver Veterans Writing Workshop leaders selected the pieces to include in the anthology and worked with the authors to prepare their work for publication, according to a news release.

As the editors write in the introduction, “What you will see here are essays, stories, and poems that are as complicated and diverse as the individuals who make up the military …

But what they all have in common is a sincere effort to tell their stories in the most vulnerable and honest way that they could.”

Under the leadership of former chairman William Adams, a Vietnam veteran and a philosophy scholar, the National Endowment for the

Humanities issued a call to state humanities councils “to explore the experience of war through the lens of the humanities” through an initiative called “Standing Together,” the release said.

These ideas and aspirations came together as Colorado Humanities was awarded an Arts in Society grant, funded by Bonfils-Stanton Foundation, Colorado Creative Industries, and Hemera Foundation, and in partnership with RedLine Contemporary Art Center through their Arts in Society Program, the release said.

“In other developments, you have to get in your car,” said Brue, the CEO of the development company, at the March 28 presentation in Centennial.

He pointed to the “central promenade,” a pathway envisioned to give easy bike access up South Dayton Street to the RTD light rail station.

That stop along I-25 is a central draw for the project — it’s marketed as “The Jones District at Dry Creek Station.”

That path also would lead south on Dayton Street toward the existing Centennial Promenade shopping development and Park Meadows mall.

The Jones project will largely consist of office buildings, which could be 13 to 14 stories high along the highway, but hotel, residential and retail uses also are part of the vision. Retail could sit on the first floor of office or hotel space right outside the light rail station to entice pedestrians, Brue said.

Aside from the 306 units at The Glenn apartments, developers look to add 1,500 more residential units, according to the presentation.

Mitigating impacts By the time the project is finished, the end goal is for parking to entirely be “subterranean, with no surface parking,” Brue said.

A concern raised at the presentation was that the site would be an “eyesore” seen from Willow Creek, a large nearby neighborhood to the west. Brue argued that because the tall office buildings would sit along the highway, they’d be far enough away not to obstruct the view too direly.

The presentation also pointed to programs in the open spaces, like concerts, “movie nights,” and holiday decorations, that could add to the atmosphere at the site.

Timeline Developers haven’t yet reached the formal application stage with the city, said Neil Marciniak, Centennial’s economic development manager. The project isn’t a “done deal,” he added.

What’s more, the whole project may take about two more decades to build.

Brue Baukol presented its vision to city council in a December study session meeting, and a focus group met in February and will meet again at an undetermined date to give input. That group is made up of representatives from homeowners associations within one mile of the site.

The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission — citizens who make development recommendations to council — will decides whether the plans meet the city’s code. If approved, the plan moves to city council, which makes the final decision on whether the plans meet code. That would likely not happen until summer, according to city staff.

On Easter Sunday, April 21, they hold two services, wrapping up the week of festivities with a brunch and Easter egg hunt.

“We have lots of visitors on Easter,” Winter said. “There is no judgment as you come in. Whether you’re here every Sunday or just Easter and Christmas, all are welcome.”

Also in Castle Rock is the annual “Special Egg Hunt” hosted by Front Range Church at Douglas County High School. Organizer Jenifer Prosser says the public event caters to children young and old but also to families with special needs. They hold it on April 13, starting at 11 a.m., so families aren’t overwhelmed with too many events on Easter weekend.

They have traditional egg hunts but also ones designed for mobilityimpaired children, egg hunts that use beepers for visually impaired children, and a sensory-friendly hunt.

They expect about 2,000 people this year. Prosser said they get emails after each event from families whose child was able to attend an egg hunt for the first time because of the inclusive activities.

“We just want to bridge that gap and meet families where they are,” Prosser said.

There are also those who show up on Easter Sunday and show up hungry.

For those families, Donna Charbonnier of Ciancio’s Restaurant in Westminster is ready to take care of them. The eatery located at the Greg Mastriona Golf Courses at Hyland Hills is a family operation run by Charbonnier and her brother. For nearly 10 years they

Staff break down walls, open up the space, decorate for Easter and put up a large screen to play the film “Easter Parade.” This year’s event runs from 10 a.m. to noon on April 21 and is capped at 150 guests.

The menu boasts eggs Benedict, homemade green chili, scrambled eggs, hash browns, bacon, meatballs, biscuits and gravy and more.

Charbonnier said the brunch is a tradition for many families, and one

in high demand.

“We had them calling in February,” she said. “There’s a lot of big families that will come back year after year.”

Bauman said they are looking forward to this year’s egg hunt, which takes place on April 20, and are welcoming volunteers. Those who want to help set up can arrive at 8:30 that morning before watching little egg hunters descend on the park.

“Kids are just scooping them into their baskets. They’re so joyful,” she said. “It’s so cute.”

Race in a real life Mario Kart Video games have improved by leaps and bounds since I first started playing, and while I rarely play anymore, there is one game franchise that never goes out of style - Mario Kart. And now at the Mushroom Rally, racers and fans can bring the game to life.

The go-karting race will be held from Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 14, at K1 Speed, 8034 Midway Drive in Littleton.

Participants will be able to race and collect stars on a custom go-kart track. Let’s go fly a kite at annual festival Arvada event celebrates 17 years of outdoor fun

When the Kite Festival in Arvada started in 2002, it provided a way for families to enjoy the outdoors. Today, it is one of the metro area’s biggest celebrations of spring.

“It’s all about families having fun outside,” said Brenda Berg, special events coordinator for the city of Arvada. “It’s not to be a financial burden on anyone. Everyone can get out and enjoy the day.”

The free event, which takes place during National Kite Month, returns to Stenger Soccer Complex Sunday, h April 7.

Attendees will have the option to bring their own kites or buy them at the event. Kids can also get in on the fun in the days leading up to the event by attending a kite-making class at Majestic View Nature Center, 7030 Garrison St, Arvada.

“It’s a chance for kids to make their own kite and learn why it’s that shape,” said Mike Dempsey, educator at Majestic View. “It’s getting them a little more involved in the festival when they do their own kite-making.”

Quality depth is important for any good high school basketball team.

That’s why there are seven players each on the 2018-19 boys and girls Colorado Community Media All-South Metro teams.

Players are eligible from schools in the Douglas County and Littleton districts, plus Valor Christian, Englewood, Cherry Creek and Lutheran high schools. The team was selected by the CCM sports staff, with input from coaches.

Scoring, rebounding and leadership are prominent on both teams.

Castle View’s Chase Hettinger, Julian Hammond III of Cherry Creek and Brendan Temple of Douglas County are the top scorers with 22.1, 20.5 and 17.6 scoring averages, respectively, on the boys team, and they have plenty of point support from the rest of the players.

Kobe Sanders of Chaparral is one of the leaders, along with teammate Tanner Giles. Austin Holt of ThunderRidge and Ben Grusing of Mountain Vista are consistent, steady, reliable all-star performers.

Guard Jana Van Gytenbeek of Cherry Creek heads the girls team with her ability to stand out in crunch time as she led the Bruins to the Class 5A state championship.

Freshman Raegan Beers of Valor Christian, Kasey Neubert of Highlands Ranch and Cali Clark of Cherry Creek provide inside scoring punch and rebounds. Beers was the top scorer in the CCM coverage area with an 18.9 average.

Twin sisters Eliza and Nicole Hill, however, have been on two state championship teams in the last 12 months.

Eliza won the state’s No. 2 singles tennis championship for Cherry Creek last spring at the state tennis tournament. Nicole captured the No. 3 singles title and helped the Bruins win the state team title.

Then, last month the sisters were on the Bruins’ Class 5A state championship girls basketball team.

“It felt amazing, it was so different in basketball,” said Eliza. “For Creek, that was the first state basketball championship. It was such an amazing feeling and my teammates were incredible. For tennis, it was really exciting too, but we’ve been doing that for 35 years.”

According to Nicole, the team aspect of basketball is a big difference from tennis.

“Basketball was really, really fun,” she said. “It was more special to win it in basketball, because in tennis it was really special for me to win an individual title and a team title, but it is so much harder in basketball and there were so many good teams this year.

“Highlands Ranch, Grandview, Valor Christian and Regis were really strong. It was special because Cherry Creek has never won a girls state basketball title. In tennis we’ve won 35 state titles.

Eliza played in 22 games for the basketball team, averaging 1.5 points and 2.4 rebounds. Nicole suffered a concussion in practice and played in just 16 games while averaging 1.4 points and 1.6 rebounds.

Nicole hopes to be cleared to play tennis later this spring.

“I have to be honest with you,” said Nicole. “Eliza and I were very, very proud benchwarmers this season. I would say I am better at tennis than basketball but I really love both sports.

“Both are so different but each of them have such amazing qualities that helps the other. Like footwork in basketball helps me stay in shape for tennis and be able to handle all that. And the mental game in tennis

is super helpful for basketball.”

Eliza and Nicole, the 6-foot-1 sophomores, started playing tennis when they were young but it took some prodding to play organized basketball since the Hill family lived in Madrid, Spain for over a decade.

“My whole family are tennis players so I started playing ever since I could hold a racket,” explained Eliza. “We grew up in Spain. And in Spain it is a little bit different. Not many people are student athletes.

You are either going to become an athlete and go pro or maybe get a scholarship and go play Division I tennis in the U.S. or you are going to be a really good student.

“My parents didn’t want that.

They grew up in the U.S. and they wanted us to play sports as well as be athletes. There wasn’t a basketball team but Mom went around talking to every single girl and parent that we knew asking them if they would play basketball. We started a girls basketball team. That was in third grade and I’ve been playing ever since.”

And winning state titles in two sports.

Irish storyteller among presenters at conference Story Seeds event features local, national and international storytellers STAFF REPORT

Those who love telling stories, as well as those who love to listen to them, will enjoy three events planned during the Rocky Mountain Storytelling Conference April 12-13 at the American Mountaineering Center at 710 10th St. in Golden.

Rocky Mountain Storytelling, a nonprofit, volunteer-led organization based in Golden, presents a conference, a public concert and a story slam during its Story Seeds Conference and Concert.

“We are very excited to bring the annual conference and concert back to Golden this year,” Rocky Mountain Storytelling President and Board Member Kate Lutz said in a news release. “It has become more important than ever to preserve the art of storytelling as the age of digital communication continues to boom. We feel this event is the perfect way to hear some fascinating storytellers and inspire a new generation to learn how to both share and enjoy this art.”

The public concert, “Friday Evening Stories in Concert,” begins at 7 p.m. April 12 and features Irish storyteller Liz Weir; author, performer and educator Angel Vigil; and bilingual storyteller and podcaster Carolina Quiroga-Stultz.

The concert is targeted to an adult audience; children older than 10 are welcome.

The Story Seeds conference is April 13 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Weir will give the keynote presentation, and workshops are led by Glenda Bonin, Mark Goldman, Yvonne Healy, Maureen Korte, Julie Moss and Elaine Muray. Laura Deal, Pam Faro, Yvonne Healy, Elaine Muray, Susan Scott-Stevens, John Stansfield and 2018 RMS Story Slam Winner Dave Starr also will perform.

Conference ticket price includes lunch, the Friday concert and a ticket to the story slam, which will follow the conference at 7 p.m. April 13. The story slam includes personal and traditional tales on the theme of “illusion.”

Attendees are invited to bring their best five-minute story and put their name in a hat. Ten storytellers will be chosen to perform, and a panel of judges will determine the winner and award a prize. Storytellers are not allowed to bring notes on the stage.

“The concert, conference and slam will be filled with stories that entertain, delight and make you think,” Lutz said in the release. “Adults love stories. If you love listening to stories or are just curious about a storytelling concert, come and enjoy the Friday evening concert and Saturday Slam. Want more?
