Littleton Public Schools to expand free meals for kids program Breakfast and lunch provided at no charge to youths 18 and younger

As the COVID-19 crisis continues, Littleton Public Schools will keep feeding hungry kids.

The district will keep providing grab-and-go breakfasts and lunches for anyone 18 and younger at no charge for the foreseeable future, said Katie Kerkhoff, a supervisor in the Nutrition Services department.

Though so far meals have been distributed from Field and East elementaries, Kerkhoff said the department is working on expanding to other locations, and even using school buses to deliver meals to other parts of the city.

LPS began distributing free breakfasts and lunches on March 16, after Superintendent Brian Ewert ordered all schools closed as part of efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19.

The program was an immediate hit, Kerkhoff said, and as of March 23, food service staff were handing out upward of 150 meals a day from East Elementary, and up to 80 a day from Field.

An Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office deputy has tested positive for COVID-19, the office announced in a March 27 news release.

“The deputy is being supported and resources are available to the deputy and their family,” the office said in the release. “The sheriff ’s office is not experiencing significant staffing issues at this time.”

The Arapahoe County Jail has no positive or presumed positive COVID-19 cases among the inmate population, according to the release.

The head of Cherry Creek School District didn’t mince words when he outlined the district’s transition to online class, as schools across the Denver metro area remained closed due to concerns about COVID-19.

“I am asking our teachers to shift what has been purposefully developed as a brick-and-mortar operation for the last 70 years into a remote learning environment in four days,” Superintendent Scott Siegfried wrote in an online letter to the community, asking for its “patience, grace and support.”

Cherry Creek Schools was set to begin online class for all students March 30, and it considered how to ensure that all students have access to the necessary technology and internet in their homes. The district was to send out a survey via text and email to identify families in need of technology, Siegfried’s March 23 letter said.

Cherry Creek Schools also worked on plans to meet needs of students who receive special education, English language support, and gifted-and-talented support, Siegfried wrote.

FREE MEALS WILL CONTINUE THROUGH CLOSURE

Cherry Creek School District will still provide free meals for students through April 17 in light of the governor’s executive order to close schools statewide until then. The program may be extended further.

The free “Breakfast, Lunch and a Book” program is in effect for all youths age 18 and younger.

Under the increasing likelihood that school will remain closed statewide through the end of the school year — and with many parents mandated to work from home — some south metro Denver families are looking at the upsides of being shut in.

Karen Corsi, a mother in the district, acknowledged that many are struggling, but “in our situation, I am thankful for the family time,” she said.

Out in east Centennial, Shoshana Howley expressed gratitude for having her kids safe at home, but she knows families are anxious about changing their lifestyles through the end of the semester.

For some, time to reconnect Corsi, an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, has children in seventh, 10th and 11th grades in the district — and some have a leg up on the online transition.

“Two of my kids were already doing some online stuff because they’re enrolled in the (Cherry Creek) Innovation Campus,” Corsi said. She expects to do a bit of handholding to make sure everyone’s able to use the online class system, but she isn’t stressed about it.

She knows some families have been more directly affected amid the pandemic — which has spurred business closures and upended thousands of livelihoods — but if there’s a silver lining, it’s the ability to spend time with kids, for the parents who can, she said.

“Believe it or not, we’re watching movies together,” said Corsi, 51.

Howley, a stay-at-home mom, has kids at the K-8 Cherry Creek Academy charter school, and they started online class March 23, Howley said.

“We’ve always been able to do activities and science experiments, but we could do it together — but now to facilitate everyone’s needs at the same time, that has been a change,” Howley said of her 6- and 8-year-olds.

Due to guidance from state and national authorities banning gatherings with more than 10 people, as well as guidance regarding social distancing, Cherry Creek School District Superintendent Scott Siegfried decided to cancel all high school proms this year, an online letter from Siegfried said.

It’s “more than likely” the district will face similar restrictions in May that would impact graduations, the letter added.

“I believe high school graduation is one of the most important events of a young person’s life. I am committed to finding a way to hold graduation, even if it means postponing the ceremony to a later date or making modifications to ensure public health and safety,” Siegfried wrote.

The district will provide access to school nurses and mental health providers on weekdays during the closure. Information on a telehealth and mental health phone number for students, parents and staff were to be communicated by the end of the week of March 23.

South Metro Fire Rescue orders 12 firefighters to self-isolate Move comes after two department members test positive for COVID-19

Twelve firefighters with South Metro Fire Rescue have been ordered to self-isolate for 14 days after two firefighters tested presumptive positive for COVID-19, the agency said March 25.

The two firefighters who tested positive are recovering at home, according to a news release. The other 10 firefighters who came into contact with them have been ordered to self-isolate

Widespread closures spell danger for people living on the streets

Brandy Sims just wants to take a shower.

“A woman wants to keep clean,” said Sims, 41. “I’d go without food if I could just wash my hair.”

She and her husband have been sleeping in their car beside the South Platte River, in a makeshift camp of tarp-draped RVs, for the past couple weeks. Sims and her husband wound up homeless after a series of bad turns, culminating in car repairs that left them broke.

“We could take showers at the rec center, but it’s closed,” Sims said as her husband tinkered with the car’s broken heater. “So are the churches.

We could freshen up at the library or McDonald’s, but that’s gone too.”

With the vast majority of public amenities shut down amid the COVID-19 pandemic, people living on the streets have seen their meager support systems dwindle.

With stores and restaurants shut, access to bathrooms is scarce. Without libraries, accessing the internet — where the vast majority of information about a world-shaking crisis is being disseminated — becomes difficult. Power outlets to charge cell phones are rare. Food pantries are overwhelmed. Many day and overnight shelters are closed.

“A stay-at-home order is hard to deal with when you don’t have a home,” Sims said.

“We’re grieving that we can’t open,” said LynnAnn Huizingh, the executive director of the Severe Weather Shelter Network. The group partners with churches in the Denver suburbs to shelter unhoused people on cold nights, providing a hot meal, companionship, and a warm, dry place to sleep.

But many of the group’s volunteers are over 50 and at greater risk from the virus, and partner churches are closed. When a late-winter squall blew in during the first week of widespread closures, the network was unable to open shelters to the multitudes it normally serves.

Instead, volunteers held outreach events, handing out emergency kits with handwarmers, socks, bus tickets, blankets and tarps.

“Our mission is to keep people from freezing to death,” Huizingh said. “Our guests told us, `We’ve survived worse than this. We’ll see you on the flip side.’ The grace and understanding we received was so humbling.”

Other lifelines are all but closed.

Giving Heart in Englewood, a day shelter that provides connections to a wide variety of services, shut its doors in efforts to maintain social distanc-

ing, according to a voicemail on the center’s hotline, though mail service for people with no fixed address continues — which may prove essential for people to receive assistance checks in coming weeks.

Other groups are doing their best to adapt. Café 180, a pay-what-you-can restaurant in Englewood that often serves people living on the street, is handing out grab-and-go meals.

So is Littleton’s GraceFull Café, another pay-what-you-can restaurant that’s become a hub of compassion and dignity for people without homes.

Though the dining room is closed, GraceFull owner Heather Greenwood is still doing her best for her guests, letting them use the restaurant’s bathroom and phone.

“Even though we can’t sit down with them over a meal, we can be someone in their lives who cares about them,” Greenwood said while rolling out pie crusts. “Our friends on the street are survivors beyond anything I’m capable of. It’s humbling to hear their gratitude through all this.”

GraceFull’s guests say the café is a lifesaver.

“We’d be out of luck if it weren’t for this place,” said Bernard Arnold, who said he’s lived on the street for the last several years, stymied by high housing costs and family trouble. “People look at us bad enough as-is, and it’s getting harder to stay clean. I’m not trying to spread this thing, but where do you want me to wash my hands?”

Arnold said he and others once found mutual aid and a sense of camaraderie in tent camps, but those have mostly been dispersed in the Littleton and Englewood areas in recent months, making it harder to look after vulnerable companions.

Centennial City Councilmember Kathy Turley and one of her colleagues on council tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by a widespread coronavirus, sending at least some of their fellow councilmembers — and family members — into quarantine. Both councilmembers have since recovered.

Turley and her colleague — who requested that their name not be used out of concern for family safety — at-

tended the National League of Cities’ annual Congressional City Conference in Washington, D.C., in early March.

The NLC is a “resource and advocate” for cities and their leaders, its website says. Turley’s colleague isn’t sure if they were exposed to the virus in D.C. or in Colorado.

The NLC said in an announcement it learned March 17 that two attendees tested positive for COVID-19. Turley’s colleague said they were the two attendees the NLC referred to.

Turley eventually had flu-like symptoms and shortness of breath, and she got tested for COVID-19 in Lone Tree through Kaiser Permanente on March 12, she said.

She spoke with Tri-County Health Department, the health agency for Arapahoe, Adams and Douglas counties, which works to stop the spread of

COVID-19 when it is detected.

“This epidemiologist spent over an hour with me,” backtracking through all her steps and contacts, Turley said.

“The real story is how Tri-County Health was able to save many lives through that one exercise.”

Turley’s husband and son went into quarantine and were to be out on March 31, and she spent 10 days in isolation in her bedroom. Turley had to sign a document from Tri-County stating she was going into isolation, she said.

Her symptoms subsided March 20, and she came out of isolation — she had lost her sense of smell and taste along the way, she said.

Turley’s colleague on council confirmed that they also tested positive for COVID-19.

‘This is far beyond the flu’

As the number of COVID-19 infections ramps up, Littleton Adventist Hospital is bracing for the impact.

“This isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon,” said Dr. Mark Elliott, the president of medical staff at the south Littleton hospital. “We’re all somewhat fearful this is the calm before the storm. It’s like a mass casualty event in slow motion.”

The hospital has been preparing for a surge since early March, Elliott said, overhauling two floors of the hospital to isolate positive coronavirus cases and Elliott converting 20 rooms to negative airflow, for a total of 30. All elective surgeries, like joint replacements, weight loss surgeries or cosmetic surgeries, have been canceled for now.

“I want to make it clear how dangerous this is,” said Elliott, who has been at the hospital for decades, including through the 1999 Columbine High School shooting, and still works in

the emergency department. “People keep saying this is on par with the flu.

That’s not true at all.”

Fewer than 1% of patients need hospitalization for the flu, Elliott said, compared to 15% to 20% for those with COVID-19. Of those, about a quarter will need intensive care. Of those, half need ventilation. COVID-19 is also far more transferable than the flu.

A typical flu season can fill area hospitals, Elliott said, meaning a surge of COVID-19 patients could overwhelm the health care system.

“This is far beyond the flu,” Elliott said. “We’re seeing the edges of this now, but we don’t know how bad it’s going to be. It’s got us all anxious. Will we be able to keep up? By staying home, you are saving lives.”

Elliott declined to say how many COVID-19 cases the hospital has seen so far, or whether the hospital has had any deaths from the disease. He said some staff members have shown symptoms and have been told to stay home until they are no longer symptomatic, though he declined to say how many.

Elliott spoke with Colorado Community Media on March 26, the day the state health department reported that

Colorado had amassed nearly 1,500 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 24 deaths.

“At this point, it’s fair to say every hospital, urgent care and walk-in clinic in the state has probably seen cases, whether they know it or not,” Elliott said.

Doctors and hospital administrators are communicating regularly with local, state and federal officials, Elliott said, and the hospital system’s incident command centers are operating 12 hours a day.

Staff are already reusing personal protective equipment like masks and gowns that would normally be discarded between patients, Elliott said. The hospital is “gladly” accepting donations of gloves and face masks from the public, he said — though they don’t accept homemade masks.

The hospital currently has 22 ventilators, he said, and can source more from within the Centura hospital network.

Littleton Adventist is only administering COVID-19 tests to patients who require hospitalization, Elliott said, both in an effort to conserve tests and to not overwhelm state laboratories that process the tests. The turnaround

time on tests is currently 5-7 days, he said.

Patients who don’t require hospitalization are sent home and instructed to self-isolate until they are free of symptoms for three days. Those who could be sent home but live in a highrisk environment like a nursing home are held at the hospital until the test results are returned.

Staff are feeling the stress. The extra gear required to attend patients makes each visit take longer. Staff are concerned about getting the virus themselves, or worse, taking it home to their families. Most change their clothes before they go home and don’t allow family members to handle clothing from the hospital.

The hospital is still duly attending to all other non-elective patient needs, and treating heart attacks and strokes as diligently as ever, Elliott said.

With the number of infections growing rapidly, Elliott said it’s crucial people take public health orders seriously.

“I want to make sure everyone understands how potentially dangerous this is for themselves, each other and the whole health care community.”

COVID-19 pushes county jail to lower inmate count

Arapahoe County is working to keep its jail population down in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the facility, Sheriff Tyler Brown said.

There were no known cases of COVID-19 in the jail as of March 25, Brown said.

While the jail often averages about 1,000-1,100 inmates per day, Brown said he has been working with the court system to move people out. The current daily population is between 800 and 900, he said.

Brown said he has been collaborating with Michelle Amico, the chief judge of the 18th Judicial District, to lower bail amounts for many people charged with crimes in recent weeks.

“We’re getting lower-risk individuals out, while still adhering to the Victims’ Rights Act,” Brown said. “We don’t want to put people at risk of being victimized again.”

Brown said inmates on work release, meaning they spend the night in the jail but can leave during the day to go to work, have been shifted to home detention with electronic monitoring.

Staff at the jail are monitoring the

temperatures of all incoming and outgoing inmates and arresting officers, Brown said.

The jail’s medical facility has two negative airflow rooms that can be used for isolating COVID-19 patients, Brown said, and jail staff are working to convert a day room into a potential isolation room.

The department’s operations center is working with local hospitals to determine the availability of beds in case an outbreak overwhelmed the jail’s infirmary, Brown said.

The department received significant donations of protective masks

and gloves from the public in recent days, Brown said, and has been able to buy back more from licensed contractors. The personal protective equipment has been distributed to deputies and jail staff, and the department received enough donations to give some to South Metro Fire Rescue, Brown said.

Jail staff are also working with local agencies to try to find safe, sanitary places for people experiencing homelessness before they’re released.

“We want to make sure everyone’s needs are being met as well as possible,” Brown said.

APRIL WATER MAIN FLUSHING PROGRAM

The City of Englewood Utilities Department will conduct its annual fire hydrant flushing program starting April 20.

During this week, the water mains throughout the City will be flushed between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m.

The water distribution crews will be opening fire hydrants to full volume to clean residue and sediment from the water mains. The resulting surge of water flushes mineral accumulations from the main. This sediment may be forced into the connecting service lines.

Residents may experience a flow of brown water from their taps during this time. If this occurs, turn on cold water only until the taps are flowing clear.

Crews will be unable to provide prior notification of the daily flushing schedules. Residents are advised to check their cold water on a daily basis during the week of April 20 to determine if their systems have been affected by the flushing.

‘Rapid rise’ in positive tests led to local stay-at-home order Fears that growing pandemic is the ‘tip of the iceberg’ drive need for people to avoid social contact

On March 17, Colorado had 160 positive tests. A week later, that number was 4.5 times higher — 720 cases.

“A day later, it had increased from 720 to 912 cases,” said Albanese, an epidemiologist with the Tri-County Health Department, which covers Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties. “This is a rapid rise in the number of positive tests that we are getting reported.”

It’s that kind of rise, and the fear that those positive tests represent the very tip of the iceberg, that led Tri-County Health to join with Jefferson and Boulder counties to announce on March 25 an emergency stay-at-home order, which was scheduled to last from March 26 through April 17.

Albanese joined Dr. John Douglas, Tri-County’s executive director, and county officials in the media conference, which was handled entirely remotely. The Tri-County team was in offices and rooms around the Denver metro area, taking questions from similarly sequestered journalists. Douglas said he’s keeping himself in home quarantine because he’s suffering from a chest cold.

“A test that’s positive today represents an event that happened probably 14 to 17 days ago, in terms of transmission,” he said. “It takes you awhile, seven to 10 days after you are exposed, to get sick. And then it takes you awhile after you get sick to get into a place and get tested.

And then it takes awhile to learn the test results. So, we are working right now with what we know has only partially, in retrospect, been measured. Combined with what I’m hearing from hospital partners, we are weeks away from getting overloaded.”

VOICES Songs keep coming one day after another

I

s your perception of time any different than it was a few months ago?

For a while it QUIET seemed like I was having at least two DESPERATION birthdays every year. Now? Time has slowed down.

Days are different.

Weeks are different.

Needing a cue, I came up with a calendar of songs.

I heard the Mamas and Papas sing Craig Marshall “Monday Monday” at the Melodyland Smith Theatre in Anaheim, California in 1966. The opening act was Simon and Garfunkel.

The stage rotated and about every

“Mind your own business” can easily become lost in social media, as people are not short on opinions and feedback.

The other side of that is the negativity that finds its way online.

and the backbiting have no place in our minds right now, or at any time, really. I highly recommend cutting those sources out immediately.

Zig Ziglar said, “We are what we are and where we are because of what we put into our mind. We can change what we are and where we are by changing what goes into our mind.” Spending so much time working from home or in isolation gives us plenty of time to access information and consume content. So, wherever we can find the positive, motivational, uplifting, educational and inspirational information, I encourage us to lock in on those people and sources who are helping us mind the business of our own mind while shutting out and shutting down the noise of negativity.

Minding our own business can also mean that we learn to spend quiet time reflecting on those things that bring us peace, inspire us, or boost our creativity. Sometimes just sitting quietly is the best way to take care of our mind. Many people find that meditation is helpful, others will spend time in prayer to take care of themselves mentally and spiritually.

And others have shared with me that they simply sit quietly and allow their minds to empty as they focus

on nothing more than the pace of their breathing. And whether it’s through meditation, prayer, or just being completely still and quiet, the one thing that everyone shares is that they come out of each with clarity and a greater sense of peace.

Another area we can focus on as we take care of ourselves and our minds is learning how to practice patience. Many people were born with the patience gene, and God bless them, as it is much easier for them to be patient. Others of us missed out on that gene, and patience is work, and takes a lot of practice. Just like choosing what we allow into our minds, we can also choose to be patient and practice patience.

Lastly, as we choose how we mind the business of our mind, let’s remember that the words we choose to

First responders, community members turning to alternative source

round the time a national increase in COVID-19 cases began leading to product shortages, Spring44 Distilling in Loveland planned to make one highly demanded product — hand sanitizer — on-site. The distillery started making a handful of calls to gauge interest from those who might need the sanitizer most, like first responders.

Within a matter of days, the distillery was receiving call after call from police departments — not only in nearby northern Colorado cities but also from departments throughout Jefferson County and the broader Denver area.

“It just snowballed. The requests are coming fast and furious,” said Spring44 chief financial officer Robin Marisco. She added that the distillery has distributed more than 6,000 bottles of hand sanitizer to police organizations and others so far.

“Booze is not usually the answer in a crisis, but distilleries are now able to help in a super positive way,” she said.

“It’s a way for us to give back.”

As the impact of COVID-19 has escalated, numerous distilleries throughout the metro area have also launched hand sanitizer operations, producing and distributing to first responders and the wider community.

Where the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) would normally prohibit this, the two government agencies have amended their regulations in recent weeks as distilleries across the country have requested permission to enact their hand sanitizer plans.

As of March 26, the TTB’s latest statement said the organization is providing authorizations and exemptions for distilleries producing hand sanitizer, such as by waiving the need for additional permits. In turn, distilleries must keep detailed records of operations and follow a specific formula.

The FDA likewise has posted a statement saying it will not take action against distilleries, provided they meet certain requirements. Those include following the approved formula, preparing products under sanitary conditions and registering products with the FDA. With the relaxed regulations, more and more distilleries have jumped on board to address the needs of local organizations like the Westminster Police Department — which, on average, uses about three gallons of hand sanitizer per day, said investigator Cheri Spottke.

So far, the department has received sanitizer from almost 10 distilleries, she said.

“At this point, all of it has been donated. Moving forward, we will be working with these distilleries to purchase hand sanitizer,” Spottke said.

“We cannot express our gratitude enough to these distilleries for their generosity.”

However, Marisco said, as more distilleries work to meet the growing demand, “there are certain components that are harder and harder to get.”

The lack of supply has been a barrier for Devil’s Head Distillery in Englewood, said owner Ryan White.

The distillery has the equipment necessary to make hand sanitizer but has had trouble sourcing some of the necessary ingredients, such as ethanol.

Some distilleries have been able to obtain ingredients through existing connections with plants or by producing the components on-site. But for White, while his distillery produces ethanol, the cost of producing the amount necessary for hand sanitizer isn’t attainable, and many of the suppliers he’s reached out to don’t have ethanol available to provide to new

accounts.

“I’ve got about 30 emails out to some of the smaller plants so we can help our community,” White said. “We’ve been getting multiple inquiries for hand sanitizer. The shortages nationwide have people looking at all sources, and we really want to participate and help with the relief effort.”

If the distillery is able to secure the necessary ingredients, it could be distributing sanitizer three or four days later, White said.

“My intention would be to make it as long as there’s a need for it,” he said. “The big piece of the puzzle is being able to have an uninterrupted supply.”

When the operation is up and running, White hopes to assist the entities that have reached out, which includes nursing homes, police departments and health care organizations.

In addition to distributing to these operations, many local distilleries have also been selling or donating bottles to individual community members. At Ballmer Peak Distillery in Lakewood, hundreds of area residents have come by to receive a four-

ounce bottle of hand sanitizer, with the distillery having already produced more than 2,700 ounces, said Austin Adamson, co-owner and distiller.

“We saw other distilleries in Seattle making hand sanitizer, so I started researching how they were doing it,” Adamson said. Ballmer Peak has provided the sanitizer to community members for free, finding that many donate to help the distillery cover costs.

Others in the area have found different ways to ensure the sanitizer gets into customers’ hands. For instance, Golden Moon Distillery, located in Golden, cannot distribute sanitizer for free because of its licensing regulations, but it has given sanitizer out along with the purchase of any bottle.

As the distilleries remain open under current stay-at-home orders, they’re also taking the chance to encourage customers to support their businesses after stocking up on sanitizer.

“When our tasting room closed, we were worried we couldn’t stay open.

We had to switch to only bottle sales to go,” Adamson said. Now, as residents line up by the dozens, the distillery has seen some buy a bottle of spirits to show their support.

And, while the distillery is thanking customers for continuing to support them, residents are returning the favor.

“We get people just thanking us, saying they’ve searched grocery stores and pharmacies and couldn’t find any hand sanitizer,” Adamson said.

“They’re just so happy there’s someone doing something like this.”

Spring activities on hold in bid to keep kids safe

obody should blame Rhonda Blanford-Green if she feels overwhelmed, stressed, anxious or pressured these days. These are common thoughts for people who have to make tough decisions.

Blanford-Green is the commissioner of the Colorado High School Activities Association and has already had to cancel the final few days of the state basketball tournaments, and spring sports and activities are suspended until April 18 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“With our first decision about suspending spring activities, it’s imOVERTIME portant that people understand it is spring activities and not sports,” said BlanfordGreen. “We have speech and music going on. We put together some of our state’s best Jim Benton education leaders to guide us in some of our decisionmaking.

“Obviously, the ultimate decision comes from my desk but I have surrounded myself with some pretty compassionate but also responsible administrators that know that we’re making tough decisions, but the ultimate thing is to make sure we put the well- being of our students, our coaches, officials and our whole staff out of harm’s ways during this unknown time.”

State and government agencies also figure into CHSAA’s decision, and the impact of these crazy times has economically impacted the CHSAA after stopping the state basketball tournaments. Girls semifinals were played but the limited spectators who were allowed to watch got in free. And with spring sports, at least in my opinion, likely to be canceled, that could be another costly loss.

“About half our revenue comes

from ticket sales,” pointed out Blanford-Green. “We don’t have expenses but don’t have revenue.”

The CHSAA is in a waiting pattern like the rest of us.

“Our decision for spring sports is totally dependent on any type of decisions that are made about in-school resuming of academics,” said Blanford-Green. “We are not going to operate outside of any type of decisions that are made where kids are not in school. We’re educationbased.”

More decisions will have to be made and Blanford-Green is ready to face the music.

“We’re in a world pandemic,” she insisted. “At the end of the day you have to put things into perspective about the decisions I’m making vs. the decisions of our president or governor or mayors of these cities that are going to impact people’s lives forever. To me it’s a no-brainer to stop the spread of this. We have to adjust to this to make sure that there are not lives that are imperiled because of decisions we don’t make.

“I never felt like I was taking something away as much as I felt like I was protecting those that were in those facilities from the unknown. We just have to be part of the solution which is shutting down like everybody else to make sure we are not contributing to the spread of COVID-19.”

Otto the Orange Ellen Durkin spent part of her time at Syracuse University with a secret identity.

Durkin, a 2016 Chaparral graduate, is a Syracuse senior who was studying music industry and was one of the students inside the 18- to 20-pound costume of Otto the Orange, the school’s mascot.

Otto is an anthropomorphic orange and wears a blue cap and blue pants. Sports Illustrated listed Otto as the ninth best college football mascot in its all-time rankings.

Weekly Carrier Routes Available

Genders differ for the students who try out to be Otto. There are morning training sessions and team meetings. The students are members of the spirit team and are technically considered student athletes, so all Otto appearances for the spring have been canceled by the NCAA because of COVID-19.

One of the stipulations of being Otto is anonymity and only five people can be told of the student’s dual role of being Otto at sporting events, social functions, weddings, alumni events and other Syracuse gigs.

“Trying out, it was really hard not to tell people, but once I joined the team you had your teammates that you could talk about your experiences with and that’s why we became so close as teammates,” said Durkin. “Part of the fun was just being able to have a secret and trying to keep it away. We were only allowed to tell essential people, so one of my roommates knew because she would give backup cover stories if I was going to be away. She could cover for me. But keeping a secret was fun.”

Her secret was uncovered at Syracuse’s final basketball game at the Carrier Dome when all senior Ottos were revealed.

“Being Otto was really the coolest experience you could imagine,” said Durkin. “Some people are definitely afraid of mascots and once you get practice it gets easier to read the room and see when you are wanted and when people would rather not see you. Away games people were at least civil for the most part.

“Otto is a pretty lovable mascot, he’s not intimidating or cocky and he just kind of tries to be a voice of happiness. Some people were kind of rude but for the most part it was

fun. Most of the rooms you go into were full of Syracuse fans so you would walk in and be the life of the party every time. My coach told me earlier this year that Otto was going to do about 700 appearances. So it is pretty busy.”

Hall of Famer Cherry Creek football coach Dave Logan will be inducted into the National Federation of State High School Associations Hall of Fame at the NFHS summer meetings scheduled to be held in Denver on July 1.

Logan is one seven athletes to be inducted. He was a football, basketball and baseball standout at Wheat Ridge High School in the early 1970s and was drafted by teams in all three professional leagues. Logan was a two-sport standout at the University of Colorado and played for the Cleveland Browns and Broncos in the NFL. He is the play-by-play announcer for the Broncos, is a host for a morning show on KOA radio and has won seven state football titles at four different high schools.

Other familiar athletes being inducted include former Denver Nuggets star Alex English, who played at Dreher High School in Columbia, S.C., and then became the leading scorer in University of South Carolina history.

Former Colorado Rockies player Matt Holiday will also be inducted.

He three-sport letterman at Stillwater (Okla.) High School and hit .443 with 12 home runs as a senior.

Worth his weights in golds Antonio Segura of Regis Jesuit picked as South Metro Wrestler of Year

Regis Jesuit wrestler Antonio Segura won his second straight Colorado wrestling championship this season at 145 pounds.

He has been named the Colorado Community 2020 South Metro Wrestler of the Year.

Segura was picked from athletes who wrestled for Douglas County and Littleton school districts plus Valor Christian, Regis Jesuit, Cherry Creek, Grandview, Smoky Hill, Eaglecrest and Cherokee Trail high schools.

“Definitely, it was tougher to win the state championship this year,” said Segura. “I had changed my mindset from being the underdog to the champion and everybody was giving me their best match. That was a lot tougher with some good competition. And the competition out of state was definitely a lot tougher.”

Segura went 47-5 this season but was tough to beat in his home state and wrestled at three different weights.

“I know he had five losses but all his losses were in national tournaments in California,” said Regis coach

Brent Bieshaar. “He was undefeated in Colorado.

“He is just passionate about the sport. He is one of the few kids I’ve ever coached that I put him in the toughest situations that I can. So he wrestled 160, 152 and 145 for us all year. I put him where their toughest kid was. The reason we went with him at 145 at state is because we thought that was the tougher bracket than 152s.”

Segura liked the challenges he faced.

“I like the competition,” he said. “I like to wrestle the best guy that I can so I can better myself. I like opponents to give me their best and really come after me because now it’s time put it on and give it my best match.

If they win, they win. They are good competitors. If I win, I beat a really good guy.”

“I wrestled good this season. My wrestling was improved from last year to this year. It might be how I looked at matches, how I looked at opponents, how I looked at myself and reevaluating my matches.”

Bieshaar pushed Segura hard.

“He’s a great leader, but the best part is that as a leader, I am probably harder on him than any kid in the room,” explained Bieshaar. “He doesn’t take it personally. He always understands that when I criticize him it’s for him to get better. Rather than get upset and pout he responds to that and other kids see that.”

Each meal includes a wide variety of healthy foods, Kerkhoff said, including sandwiches, fruit, milk and other items.

Though staff handed out meals every day during the first week, Kerkhoff said in future weeks, meals will likely only be handed out two or three days a week, though they will offer five days’ worth of meals.

This isn’t LPS’ first experience with free meals for kids. The district also ran a similar program last summer in conjunction with South Suburban Parks and Recreation.

At East Elementary on March 23, a steady line of cars rolled up to a tent where nutrition supervisor Sarah Kinney handed out bagged meals.

Parent Erin Aldrich, whose two kids are in first and third grades, said the program is easing the difficulty of the age of quarantine.

“This whole thing took us by surprise,” Aldrich said. “I didn’t have
